An account of the naval commander Roger of Lauria and his command of warfare at sea.Just before Vespers on 30 March 1282 at the Church of the Holy Spirit on the outskirts of Palermo, a drunken soldier of the occupying French forces of Charles of Anjou accosted a young Sicilian noblewoman. It sparked a bloody conflagration, the so-called War of the Sicilian Vespers, that would ultimately involve every part of the Mediterranean. The struggle for the coveted throne of Sicily eventually enmeshed all the great powers of medieval Europe - thepope, the Byzantine Emperor and the kings of France, England and Aragon. Because the core of the Kingdom of Sicily was a wealthy, strategic island dominating the centre of the Mediterranean, the battles were fought mostly at sea.And in war at sea, a single figure proved pre-eminent: Roger of Lauria - Aragon's'Admiral of Admirals'. In the course of some twenty years of naval combat, he orchestrated decisive victories in six pitched battles and numerous limited actions, never once suffering a defeat: a feat never equalled - not even by the legendary Lord Horatio Nelson. Drawing from multiple Sicilian and Catalan sources as well as Angevin and Aragonese registers, this chronological narrative details the tactics and strategy Lauria employed to become the most successful galley fleet commander of the Middle Ages, while highlighting a crucial conflict at a pivotal point in European history, long overshadowed by the Hundred Years War. CHARLES D. STANTON is a retired US naval officer and airline pilot; he gained his PhD at the University of Cambridge.

Strategi pembangunan yang mengarah kepada industrialisasi di pedesaan telah meningkatkan pertumbuhan ekonomi masyarakat desa. Kini di pedesaan telah banyak bertumbuhan berbagai industri, Salah satu usaha untuk menyejahterakan masyarakat desa adalah dengan adanya home industry. Tidak hanya untuk pemberdayaan bagi masyarakat agar lebih berkembang ekonominya, tetapi juga dapat menyerap banyak tenaga kerja. Adanya Industri ini tentunya akan berpengaruh terhadap kehidupan sosial masyarakat yang bekerja di Home Industry tersebut. Fokus dalam penelitian ini yaitu: 1) Sejarah perkembangan sentra industri tahu di Dusun Tegal Pasangan. 2) Perubahan sosial apa yang terjadi pada pekerja sentra industri tahu di Dusun Tegal Pasangan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan penelitian kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian deskriptif. Data diperoleh dari sumber primer dan sekunder. Teknik pengumpulan informan pada penelitian ini menggunakan teknik purposive. Model interaktif Miles dan Huberman sebagai teknik analisis dari penelitian ini yang memiliki empat komponen yaitu pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data dan penarikan kesimpulan. Penelitian ini terdiri dari tahap pra lapangan, lapangan, dan analisis data. Hasil penelitian diperoleh dilapangan sebagai berikut: 1) Berdirinya Sentra Industri Tahu Dusun Tegal Pasangan diperkirakan sudah ada sejak awal kemerdekaan Indonesia. Ketersediaan bahan baku berupa kedelai yang mendukung produksi dan memacu perkembangan usaha industri. Perjalanan pengembangan usaha tersebut juga dimulai dari menggunakan alat tradisional. Namun pemilik usaha sudah merasakan perkembangan dari tahun ke tahun. 2) perubahan sosial pekerja yang pertama adalah perubahan pola pikir yang meliputi pertama, masyarakat mengalami perubahan mata pencaharian. Abstract

We examine a mean-reverting Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process that perturbs an unknown Lipschitz-continuous drift and aim to estimate the drift's value at a predetermined time horizon by sampling the path of the process. Due to the time varying nature of the drift we propose an estimation procedure that involves an online, time-varying optimization scheme implemented using a stochastic gradient ascent algorithm to maximize the log-likelihood of our observations. The objective of the paper is to investigate the optimal sample size/rate for achieving the minimum mean square distance between our estimator and the true value of the drift. In this setting we uncover a trade-off between the correlation of the observations, which increases with the sample size, and the dynamic nature of the unknown drift, which is weakened by increasing the frequency of observation. The mean square error is shown to be non monotonic in the sample size, attaining a global minimum whose precise description depends on the parameters that govern the model. In the static case, i.e. when the unknown drift is constant, our method outperforms the arithmetic mean of the observations in highly correlated regimes, despite the latter being a natural candidate estimator. Abstract

Simple Exponential Smoothing is a classical technique used for smoothing time series data by assigning exponentially decreasing weights to past observations through a recursive equation; it is sometimes presented as a rule of thumb procedure. We introduce a novel theoretical perspective where the recursive equation that defines simple exponential smoothing occurs naturally as a stochastic gradient ascent scheme to optimize a sequence of Gaussian log-likelihood functions. Under this lens of analysis, our main theorem shows that -- in a general setting -- simple exponential smoothing converges to a neighborhood of the trend of a trend-stationary stochastic process. This offers a novel theoretical assurance that the exponential smoothing procedure yields reliable estimators of the underlying trend shedding light on long-standing observations in the literature regarding the robustness of simple exponential smoothing., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

In recent demonstrations of the quantum charge-coupled device (QCCD) computer architecture, circuit times are dominated by cooling. Some motional modes of multi-ion crystals take orders-of-magnitude longer to cool than others because of low coolant ion participation. Here we demonstrate a new technique, which we call phonon rapid adiabatic passage (phrap), that avoids this issue by coherently exchanging the thermal populations of selected modes on timescales short compared to direct cooling. Analogous to adiabatic rapid passage, we quasi-statically couple these slow-cooling modes with fast-cooling ones using DC electric fields. When the crystal is then adiabatically ramped through the resultant avoided crossing, nearly-complete phonon population exchange results. We demonstrate this on two-ion crystals, and show the indirect ground-state cooling of all radial modes--achieving an order of magnitude speedup compared to direct cooling. We also show the technique's insensitivity to trap potential and control field fluctuations, and find that it still achieves sub-quanta temperatures starting as high as n~200.
