This paper is a personal account of the author’s interest in the field of sports history and its emergence in Argentina. It explores several prejudices and misunderstandings that have contributed to a limited and partial vision of this scholarly discipline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What, if anything, is actually new about political and economic transformation in twenty-first century Latin America? Here we explore how ostensibly ‘new’ policies are being built on two ‘old’ foundations that may be mutually exclusive. These are ‘extractivism’ and ‘developmentalism’, concepts that have been used rather loosely to describe current economic policies. The new developmentalism, however, may not only be contradicted by extractivism; it may be more constrained than its predecessor by fortified capitalist class interests and new global conditions. The article focuses on the development of higher education in Latin America throughout the 20th century. It discusses the changes in educational institutions since the 1980s including the decline in public funding of education, the increase in higher education enrollment and the growth of private universities. The article presents a discussion of political, economic and social trends in Latin America. An attempt to forecast likely geopolitical and sociocultural changes for the early decades of the 21st century is provided. Demographic factors are discussed, such as an ongoing reduction in both infant mortality and birthrates, accompanied by increasing life expectancy. The impact of globalization on the economies of Latin America is analyzed in terms of supply chains and jobs. The influence of the United States is discussed, with an emphasis on the example of Mexico. The establishment of democracies across Latin America is described as fragile achievement which must be guarded in order to endure.

The article discusses the regional and commercial integration of Latin America and the Caribbean region since the 1990s. The author comments on the evolution of intra-regional and inter-regional commerce and describes the development of free trade zones and trading blocks such as the South American MERCOSUR and CAN and the Caribbean's CARICOM. He considers the increased importance of extra-regional commerce and assesses the resulting state of regional integration. He concludes by discussing the forward looking coexistence and complementarity of extra-regional and intra-regional processes of commercial integration.

The article focuses on the exile history in Latin America. It discusses the 13-year exile experience of the region, including the September 11 1973 coup which overthrew Chile's Marxist President Salvador Allend and the fall of the Tupamaro guerrilla in Uruguay which drove 300,000 civilians out of the country. It explores the relationship between these exile incidents with Latin American literature through the writings of Latin American writers like Augusto Roa Bastos who explained the connection between exile, utopia, and writing.
