Climate impacts of landfill gas emissions were investigated for 20- and 100-year time horizons to identify the effects of atmospheric lifetimes of short- and long-lived drivers. Direct and indirect climate impacts were determined for methane and 79 trace species. The impacts were quantified using global warming potential, GWP (direct and indirect); atmospheric degradation (direct); tropospheric ozone forming potential (indirect); secondary aerosol forming potential (indirect) and stratospheric ozone depleting potential (indirect). Effects of cover characteristics, landfill operational conditions, and season on emissions were assessed. Analysis was conducted at five operating municipal solid waste landfills in California, which collectively contained 13% of the waste in place in the state. Climate impacts were determined to be primarily due to direct emissions (99.5 to 115%) with indirect emissions contributing −15 to 0.5%. Methane emissions were 35 to 99% of the total emissions and the remainder mainly greenhouse gases (hydro)chlorofluorocarbons (up to 42% of total emissions) and nitrous oxide. Cover types affected emissions, where the highest emissions were generally from intermediate covers with the largest relative landfill surface areas. Landfill-specific direct emissions varied between 683 and 103,411 and between 381 and 37,925 Mg CO 2 -eq./yr for 20- and 100-yr time horizons, respectively. Total emissions (direct + indirect) were 680 to 103,600 (20-yr) and were 374 to 38,108 (100-yr) Mg CO 2 -eq./yr. Analysis time horizon significantly affected emissions. The 20-yr direct and total emissions were consistently higher than the 100-yr emissions by up to 2.5 times. As part of its commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the U.S. annually develops a national estimate of methane emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills by aggregating activity data from each facility. Since 2010, the U.S. has reported a 20 % decrease in MSW landfill emissions despite a 21 % increase in tons disposed. Operator-submitted data were investigated to understand the causes of this decline. In the U.S., operators of landfills with a gas collection and control system (GCCS) calculate their facility's emissions via two separate approaches – (1) first-order decay (FOD) and (2) collection efficiency assumption (CEA) − and select either result to feed into the annual inventory. The FOD model predicts methane generation proportional to waste disposal and that approach calculated a 19 % increase in total methane generated from 2010 to 2022, whereas generation via the CEA approach decreased by 8.9 %. The amount of measured methane collected has increased 7.5 % for the same years. Discrepancies between the two models' generated methane, assumed gas collection efficiencies, and oxidized methane compound into substantive differences in national estimates. Operators more frequently select the CEA method, which results in decreased national estimates. If only the FOD method was used, U.S. MSW landfill emissions would be 1.3-1.7 times greater than current estimates which is similar to recent extrapolations from remote sensing campaigns in the U.S. Both models contain parameters with large inherent uncertainty. In this modern age of industrialization, waste from houses and factories has a major impact on the environment, and its management has become one of the most difficult tasks for the whole world. This study attempts to locate suitable sites for disposing of solid waste using geospatial techniques in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Moreover, as Ranchi is a part of the smart city project, it is important to find new sites for dumping to control the environmental issue that arises due to the increasing pressure of population growth and the rate of human migration. Site selection of solid waste dumping considers several parameters, such as land use, land cover, road, geomorphology, soil, slope, water bodies, forest, and built‐up. The present study has taken a multicriteria decision approach and used the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to delineate the suitable landfill site for the medium‐sized city of Ranchi. The study adopts the overlay analysis operation for several factors and geospatial techniques to perform site suitability analysis. The result shows four classes of suitable dumping sites, where low or restricted area covers 1145.52 km2 (63.92%), moderately restricted covers 477.74 km2 (26.65%), whereas about 140 km2 (7.81%) of the area can be constructed but with restrictions, and 28.79 km2 (1.60%) of the area is highly recommended for dumping site construction. The site suitability map and the identified four new dumping sites are highly useful to the municipality corporation and decision‐makers to alleviate environmental pollution and human health problems. Air pollution from Potentially Hazardous Elements bound with particulate matter (PHEs bound PM) in landfill air is a significant concern for human health. To date, no comprehensive research has focused on the health risks of PHEs bound to PM in landfill air. This systematic review aimed to examine PHEs, including Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Arsenic (As), Nickel (Ni), and Zinc (Zn) bound with PM in landfill air and assess the health risk for workers and waste management personnel. The systematically search was made in different electronic databases. After the screening, 18 most relevant studied focused on PHEs bound PM in landfill air were selected. The data extraction analysis indicated that mean concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cr, As, Ni, and Zn in landfill air were 0.3037, 0.0941, 0.4093, 0.0221, 0.2768, and 0.7622 μg/m3, respectively. Except for Pb, the concentrations of other PHEs bound to PM exceeded USEPA air quality standards. In addition, Non-carcinogenic risks from Cd, Cr, and Ni exposure exceeded permissible limits (HQ > 1), while As had an HQ value of 0.401. Carcinogenic risks from As, Cd, Ni, and Pb exposure were 1.31 × 10–5, 5.10 × 10–4, 3.51 × 10–5, and 2.03 × 10–6, respectively. Notably, the lifetime carcinogenic risk for workers exposed to Cr in polluted air (6.17 × 10–3) exceeded permissible limits (10–4 to 10–6). In conclusion, given the high carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of some PHEs bound PM in landfills, it is necessary to conduct more research on the health effects of interaction with these PHEs bound PM on communities and the environment in different countries. This work demonstrates the value of combining remote sensing, regression models, random forest (RF) algorithms, and artificial neural networks (ANN) to provide crucial information for landfill management in Jordan. The process of predicting land surface temperature (LST) using linear and nonlinear regression models, ANN, and RF depended on past LST time series retrieved from Landsat images for the years 2000 to 2018. Additionally, the study utilized the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference moisture index (NDMI), as well as data on humidity, wind velocity, and ambient air temperature. The deployed ANN model exhibited a coefficient of determination of 0.87 and a mean squared error of 6.40*10^-8. Similarly, the RF model accurately identified 93.88% of the LST values. The findings revealed that the LST at landfills was consistently higher than the summer air temperature, and that the LSTs of open landfill cells exceeded those of closed cells. Moreover, the predicted LST values from ANN and RF models surpassed those from linear and nonlinear regression models. Located in Douala V (Cameroon), Makepé Missoké is a lowland area that is influenced by the Tongo Bassa and Ngongué rivers. The site has a closed dumpsite, that operated from the 1975's to 2003 for the disposal and storage of domestic waste produced in Douala. Geoelectric profiling (ERT) coupled with seismo-electric imaging was used to characterize the shallow aquifer of the Douala subbasin and map subsurface pollution. Fourteen geoelectrical profiles were deployed between June and August 2018 and March 2019. Along these lines, 49 sets of seismo-electric point data were collected in December 2021. A total of 118 wells drilled (2018) were used to obtain water level and topographic data. The aquifer geometry, hydraulic characteristics, permeability, lithology and leachate plume extent were determined. This survey enables us to visualize waste infiltration and migration within Makepé. The drilled wells indicate that the main lithologies observed are clay, sandy clay, sand, clayey sand and gravel. The leachate plume observed after processing the electric profiles had a resistivity signature of < 10 Ωιτι, and high electrical conductivity are observed in some wells. The leachate migrates within the subsurface along a northwest-southwest trend, where ground water pollution is observed due to leachate infiltration. This infiltration resulted in poor water quality indices in some collected samples. Such pollution is common in unconfined aquifers (< 50 m) due to the absence of a confining layer at the landfill. An increase in resistivity values with depth toward the northeast direction indicates progressive vertical dilution during leachate mineralization. This study integrated geoelectric and seismo-electric tomography with basic water chemistry analysis to effectively characterize the groundwater within the phreatic Quaternary/Mio-Pliocene aquifers of the Douala basin. Advancements in satellite technology coupled with image processing, statistical tools and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, enable efficient, non-invasive, real-time monitoring and analysis of landfills. Landfills pose a severe environmental threat to the local ecosystem. Metropolitan cities in most developing countries usually have multiple landfills. Landfill Land surface temperature (LST) monitoring can help keep track of the changes in landfills, especially concerning waste management, land use, hotspot movement, fire prediction and the stability of the landfill. Monitoring these waste disposal sites through remote sensing data can provide real-time monitoring and analysis, supporting quick interventions when necessary. This research utilizes LANDSAT 8 satellite images for Mumbai, India. Using geospatial analysis, image processing and data processing, LST is derived for 576 LST data points. While landfill LST has a positive trend over time, but there are cyclical, seasonal and changes due to disruptive events. With landfill LST consistently remaining the highest over the years, in comparison to built-up, green and sea LSTs. A statistical analysis of the data reveals the overall significance of the model in ascertaining the increase in temperature due to the presence of landfills. Despite challenges such as large data libraries and variable environmental factors, this research emphasizes and contributes to satellite imagery's evolving potential for monitoring and assessing LSTs. Geomembrane (GM) liners anchored in the trenches of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills undergo pull-out failure when the applied tensile stresses exceed the ultimate strength of the liner. The present study estimates the tensile strength of GM liner against pull-out failure from anchorage with the help of machine-learning (ML) techniques. Five ML models, namely multilayer perceptron (MLP), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF) and locally weighted regression (LWR) were employed in this work. The effect of anchorage geometry, soil density and interface friction were studied with regards to the tensile strength of the GM. In this study, 1520 samples of soil–GM interface friction were used. The ML models were trained and tested with 90% and 10% of data, respectively. The performance of ML models was statistically examined using the coefficients of determination (R2, R2adj) and mean square errors (MSE, RMSE). In addition, an external validation model and K-fold cross-validation techniques were used to check the models' performance and accuracy. Among the chosen ML models, MLP was found to be superior in accurately predicting the tensile strength of GM liner. Morocco faces a growing waste issue due to population growth, economic expansion, and industrialization, leading to environmental concerns, especially regarding leachate. From 1986 to 2022, Casablanca's main landfill produced a total of 800,000 m² of leachate, which was stored in evaporation ponds, posing significant environmental risks. Our research not only concentrates on traditional chemical analyses for leachate assessments but also emphasizes ecosystem interactions. Phytotoxicity tests assess the impact of contaminants, particularly heavy metals, complementing traditional chemical analyses. Our study investigated the accumulation of these contaminants in the soil and their subsequent transfer to plant tissues. This research aimed to examine the accumulation of heavy metals, including Pb, Cd, and Hg, in soils irrigated with varying leachate concentrations (C0: control; C1: 5%; C2: 7%; C3: 10%; and C4: 15%). The experiments involved the cultivation of M. sativa plants under open-field conditions. To assess the transfer of metals from soil to plant tissues, the transfer factor (TF) index was calculated. Our findings revealed that Pb, Cd, and Hg exhibited transfer factor ranges of 0.55-0.93, 0.07 to 0.21, and 0.1 to 0.37, respectively. The most acceptable way to prevent and eliminate negative phenomena arising from devastating landscapes is phytomelioration. To assess the suitability of the landfill's surface for phytomelioration measures, it is necessary to determine the species composition, physiological stability, density, and completeness of the tree stand (in case of the tree species development) already developing as a result of natural overgrowth. The present work examines the ecological succession of three large urban landfills within the Western Forest Steppe of Ukraine - Lviv, Ternopil, and Lutsk. It was established that the maximum phytomass is characteristic of the gentle slopes of landfills with relatively stable moisture index, and developed soil, which gives reason to attribute the plant groups to the endoecogenesis stage while there are no garbage dumping processes. Three stages of overgrowth were identified for all landfills - syngenetic succession, initial endoecogenetic succession, and mature endoecogenetic succession. The taxonomic structure of the flora of the urban landfills of the Western Forest Steppe is represented by the divisions Magnoliophyta, Pinophyta, Polypodiophyta, Bryophyta, and the classes Magnoliopsida, Liliopsida, Pinopsida, Equisetopsida, Polytrichopsida. The phytomeliorative efficiency of vegetation at solid waste landfills shows that the surface of landfills in the Western Forest Steppe is dominated by stunted plants and the phytomelioration coefficient is low. Thus, the surface of the landfill is suitable for phytomelioration and reclamation works and landfill decommissioning. Effective management of urban solid waste in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, State of Pará, Brazil is essential for conserving ecosystems and public health in eight cities, emphasizing the municipality of Marituba. Considering the vulnerability of underground water resources in Marituba to pollution due to the possible impact of leachate percolation from the landfill, this study evaluates the quality of groundwater captured in tubular wells from different adjacent locations potentially used for human consumption. For this purpose, the systematic methodologies of the groundwater quality index and human health risk assessment analysis: non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk to human health were used based on chronic daily intake of heavy metals by consumption and dermal adsorption of groundwater, measured through risk quotients, risk index, and incremental lifetime cancer risk. To evaluate the interrelationships of pollutants, analysis of variance, hierarchical cluster analysis, and principal component analysis were used based on the spatio-temporal quantification of pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, As, Al, Ba, Co, Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, U, and Zn. Residents of the study area are not at potential risk, as the results demonstrate that groundwater is within the potability standards of Brazilian legislation, except for aluminum concentrations, which ranged from 53.12 to 378.01 μg L−1 and 3.82 to 339.5 μg L−1 in the dry and rainy seasons, respectively, exceeding the established limit of 200.0 μg L−1. The quality index for groundwater and the heavy metal pollution index demonstrated that groundwater has good drinking quality with low metal contamination. The risk was considered low at all sampling sites in the non-carcinogenic risk assessment. Principal component analysis indicated that the sources of metal pollution are natural origins and anthropogeny. In this sense, they become worried because aluminum is a recognized neurotoxicant that can interfere with the central nervous system's critical physiological and biochemical processes. Furthermore, despite complying with potability standards, trace concentrations of highly toxic metals such as As, Pb, Cd, and Ni may indicate initial contamination by landfill leachate. The former Lepanto landfill in the Santiago Metropolitan Region in Central Chile ceased operations in 2002 after 24 years. Currently, a biogas recovery center operates on this site. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the atmospheric concentrations of two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, i.e., phenanthrene and fluoranthene) at three points downwind from the former Lepanto landfill using passive air samplers and polyurethane foam disks to provide 3‐month average concentrations of contaminants during winter months. The results showed concentrations ranging between 2 and 65 ng m−3 and decreasing with distance from the former landfill. Given that the distance to other potential sources was similar in all sampling sites, the evidence found suggested that the former Lepanto landfill may contribute to the local PAH inventory. Thus, we suggest that former landfills are potential candidates for long‐term monitoring as they can represent a less‐known environmental liability for residents. This study aims to find a more realistic management approach to Municipal solid waste (MSW), focusing on Ndokwa West LGA, Delta State, Nigeria. It employs a combination of geospatial analyses and laboratory examination of water samples from three borehole locations congruent to landfills in the study area. GPS-measured positions of the five landfill sites were plotted on the topographic plan of the study area and analysed. This landfills' location, which is the southeastern part of the area, is a lowland. By hydraulic gradient and flow pattern of the area deducted from DEM, these landfills are within the pathway of major groundwater resources. Proximity analyses with 5 to 10 km buffer zones show that most of the topographic features are at risk of considerable pollution due to landfill's leachate into the surrounding area. Groundwater vulnerability map shows 21.5% of the studied area at a high risk of contamination, 7.5% at medium, and ~71% at low risk. The Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels from the three boreholes were significant, suggesting severe pollution, and pointing to the landfill as the main cause. Colour showed an unobjectionable state and signified pollution of the wells. Temperature (0°C) ranged from 20 to 26°C, much higher than the 5°C limit, set by the WHO and NSDWQ. The water pH ranges from 6.05 to 7.02, suggesting traces of heavy metals in water samples. Nitrate and nitrite have values ranging from 5.0 to 6.162 and 0.251 to 0.455 mg/l, suggesting the water samples contain some contaminants. Lead (Pb) (from 0.25 to 0.65 mg/l) is practically beyond the WHO and NSDWQ permissible limits for heavy metals. The accumulation of lead in landfills has substantial effects on groundwater pollution. Simulated landfill bioreactors were established and operated for 635 days to investigate the dynamic release of seven siloxanes in landfill biogas (denoted by octamethyltrisiloxane (L3), decamethyltetrasiloxane (L4), dodecamethylpentasiloxane (L5), hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3), octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6)). In total, 259.45, 252.73, 233.30, 80.40, 4.35, 1.67 and 1.10 mg of D5, D3, D4, D6, L4, L5 and L3 were discharged from 57 kg of municipal solid waste (MSW). More than 70 % of the siloxanes were released before day 119, indicating that the peak period of siloxane discharge occurred during the hydrolysis and acid production stage. The cyclosiloxanes (D3, D4, D5 and D6) were the dominant siloxane species in the biogas. The mass load of discharged cyclosiloxanes was more than 98 % of that of the total siloxanes. In addition to the variation in the concentration distribution profiles of the different siloxane species in the MSW, transformations among species may have an important effect on the release of siloxanes. The main transformation products were D3 and D4 with high release rates (>20 %) and high measured contents of trimethylsilanol (TMSOH) and functional microorganisms (Pseudomonas) were observed during landfilling. The presence of Jabon landfill leachate poses a significant threat to the surrounding populace due to groundwater contamination, necessitating a thorough understanding of its extent and implications for public health. This research aims to comprehensively analyze groundwater samples collected from various distances around the Jabon landfill site. Utilizing advanced spatial modeling techniques and a meticulous examination of key parameters, our study seeks to elucidate the spatial distribution and spread of leachate, facilitating an assessment of its impact on groundwater quality. Groundwater samples were collected from 12 wells at varying distances from the landfill. Analysis revealed contaminant concentrations decreasing with distance, with parameters like pH, Electricity Conductivity (EC), Dissolved oxygen (DO), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), and Cadmium (Cd) showing variations correlating with proximity to the landfill. The Pollution Index obtained the highest value of 6.1 in wells 6 and 12, located at 1,497.15 meters and 2,491.42 meters from Jabon landfill. Well 8, located 3,691 meters from Jabon landfill, has a Pollution Index of 5.8. Spatial analysis indicated waste dispersion from west to east and north to south, mirroring decreasing groundwater elevation levels. Overall, well pollution status suggested moderate contamination. These findings provide valuable insights into leachate pollution dynamics, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate its adverse effects on the environment and public health. By shedding light on these dynamics, this study contributes to ongoing efforts in environmental sustainability and informs the development of effective pollution management strategies tailored to landfill leachate contamination challenges. Industrial fires at facilities including waste management sites, warehouses, factories, chemical works, and fuel storage depots are relatively frequent occurrences. Often, these fires occur adjacent to urban communities and result in ground-level airborne pollutant concentrations that are well above guideline values. Land, water, livestock, and crops may also be contaminated by the emissions and by firefighting activities. Moreover, impacted communities tend to have a higher proportion of minority ethnic populations as well as individuals with underlying health vulnerabilities and those of lower socio-economic status. Nevertheless, this is an aspect of air quality that is under-researched, and so this review aims to highlight the public health hazards associated with industrial fires and the need for an effective, coordinated, public health response. We also review the range of monitoring techniques that have been utilised in such fires and highlight the role of dispersion modelling in predicting plume trajectories and in estimating population exposure. We recommend establishing 1 h guideline values for particulate matter to facilitate timely public health interventions, and we highlight the need to review regulatory and technical controls for sites prone to fires, particularly in the waste sector. Purpose. To establish the taxonomic and ecological structure of the flora and to make conclusions about the course of natural vegetative reclamation processes of the Western Forest Steppe landfills of Ukraine. Methodology. The analysis and study of the ecological and floristic structure of the landfill flora was carried out in accordance with generally accepted methods: floristic, monitoring, general scientific, mathematical and statistical ones. Findings. It has been established that the flora of the studied landfills (large, medium, small ones) is represented by tree-shrub and herbaceous (mainly ruderal) vegetation. During the reconnaissance and field surveys, 53 species were identified, including 18 species of trees, 8 species of shrubs and 27 species of herbaceous plants. The formation of a natural process of plant improvement at various landfills in the Western Forest Steppe is mainly due to the participation of the Magnoliopsida and Magnoliophyta phylum classes, which make up 84–89 % of plant species. The distribution of landfill vegetation according to the requirements for lighting intensity showed that heliophytes (50–67 %) predominate at all types of landfills. This indicates good illumination of all areas of the studied landfills and a positive light regime. The heterogeneity of vegetation cover and ecological conditions of its development at typical landfills in the Western Forest Steppe is primarily due to negative factors caused by the operation of these technogenically hazardous facilities. Originality. The degree of risk is determined to the ecological system due to the technogenic load of the region under study caused by landscape-transforming factors of landfills, as well as methods for overcoming negative situations using phytomeliorative approaches. The main scientific principles are based on the decommissioning of landfills through the use of phytocoenoses-reclamation, the implementation of which contributes to the improvement of environmental safety. Spatial patterns are established of ecological succession at landfills, which allows predicting the effects of man-made pollution of landfills on biota. Practical value. Understanding the processes of natural phytomelioration depending on edaphic and climatic factors will allow the selection of effective plant species for the stage of reclamation at landfills. There is a lack of information on the level of microplastic (MP) contamination in leachate, which contains high levels of pollutants and has considerable complexity to treat, originating from landfills. In this review, the sources, abundance, and characteristics (polymer type, size, shape) of MPs in landfill leachates were presented. Subsequently, the limited number of studies on MPs released into the environment from the environment from the leachate of uncontrolled landfills were summarised. In the next section, possible remediation approaches (physical treatment processes, chemical treatment processes, biological treatment processes, and constructed wetlands) for MPs in landfill leachate were discussed. Finally, research gaps and recommendations for future studies on MPs in landfill leachates were presented. As a result of the review, it was determined that there is an urgent need for a standardized MP analysis method. Furthermore, the necessity for an increased number of studies on the removal of MPs from landfill leachate with high efficiency and low cost was highlighted. It was emphasized that reducing the amount of plastic waste in landfills and reducing the amount of MP in landfill leachate can be achieved by taking and implementing urgent measures through public policies. Morocco faces a growing waste issue due to population growth, economic expansion, and industrialization, leading to environmental concerns, especially regarding leachate. Casablanca’s main landfill, which is operational from 1986 to 2022, produces more than 800,000 m3/year of leachate, posing significant environmental risks. Our research not only concentrates on traditional chemical analyses for leachate assessments but also emphasizes ecosystem interactions. Phytotoxicity tests assess the impact of contaminants, particularly heavy metals, complementing traditional chemical analyses. Our study investigated the accumulation of these contaminants in the soil and their subsequent transfer to plant tissues. This research aimed to examine the accumulation of heavy metals, including Pb, Cd, and Hg, in soils irrigated with varying leachate concentrations (C0: control; C1: 5%; C2: 7%; C3: 10%; and C4: 15%). The experiments involved the cultivation of M. sativa plants under open-field conditions. To assess the transfer of metals from soil to plant tissues, the transfer factor (TF) index was calculated. Our findings revealed that Pb, Cd, and Hg exhibited transfer factor ranges of 0.55-0.93, 0.07 to 0.21, and 0.1 to 0.37, respectively. The accumulation of heavy metals at the different leachate concentrations followed the order Pb > Hg > Cd.

The most acceptable way to prevent and eliminate negative phenomena arising from devastating landscapes is phytomelioration. To assess the suitability of the landfill's surface for phytomelioration measures, it is necessary to determine the species composition, physiological stability, density, and completeness of the tree stand (in case of the tree species development) already developing as a result of natural overgrowth. The present work examines the ecological succession of three large urban landfills within the Western Forest Steppe of Ukraine - Lviv, Ternopil, and Lutsk. It was established that the maximum phytomass is characteristic of the gentle slopes of landfills with relatively stable moisture index, and developed soil, which gives reason to attribute the plant groups to the endoecogenesis stage while there are no garbage dumping processes. Three stages of overgrowth were identified for all landfills – syngenetic succession, initial endoecogenetic succession, and mature endoecogenetic succession. The taxonomic structure of the flora of the urban landfills of the Western Forest Steppe is represented by the divisions Magnoliophyta, Pinophyta, Polypodiophyta, Bryophyta, and the classes Magnoliopsida, Liliopsida, Pinopsida, Equisetopsida, Polytrichopsida. The phytomeliorative efficiency of vegetation at solid waste landfills shows that the surface of landfills in the Western Forest Steppe is dominated by stunted plants and the phytomelioration coefficient is low. Thus, the surface of the landfill is suitable for phytomelioration and reclamation works and landfill decommissioning. Pharmaceuticals have been detected at high concentrations in landfill leachate and refuse, which may pose potential long-term environmental impacts. The interaction of pharmaceuticals between leachate and refuse contributes to their retention through in situ sorption, thereby mitigating this impact. However, limited efforts have been made to describe the distribution characteristics of pharmaceuticals in the refuse-leachate phase. In this study, two refuse and three leachate samples were used to obtain partitioning coefficients (K d) for two typical pharmaceuticals, carbamazepine (CBZ) and sulfadiazine (SD), with campus soil as a comparison. Landfill refuse exhibited higher K d values (12.36 ± 0.90 and 19.76 ± 1.96 mL/g for CBZ and 1.90 ± 0.34 and 6.27 ± 0.58 mL/g for SD in two samples, respectively) than campus soil (3.73 ± 1.31 mL/g for CBZ and 0.81 ± 0.26 mL/g for SD), influenced by refuse properties such as higher organic matter (OM) content and specific surface area (SSA). The influence of leachate pH on K d values depended on the electrostatic interaction between the species of target pollutants and negatively charged refuse. The effect of humic acid (HA) was related to its binding with target pollutants in solution and its competition with them for sorption sites. Electrostatic repulsion, hydrogen bonding and π-π interaction were the proposed mechanisms in SD sorption on refuse, while hydrogen bonding participated in the sorption of CBZ. Inadequate solid waste management (SWM) can cause environmental contamination and health risks. Minimizing the health risks from SWM practices requires the identification of linkages between potential sources of exposure, environmental transport pathways, and adverse health outcomes. A safety planning approach can represent an innovative tool for reducing such risks. In previous research, we introduced the solid waste safety plan (SWSP) concept, only focusing on the health risk ranking assessment matrix. Here, we demonstrate the application of the SWSP framework in a case study of the municipal landfill of Novi Sad, Serbia. We identify potential hazards and assessed the likelihood and severity for them, using a combination of quantitative and semi-quantitative approaches to estimate risk levels for each identified hazard. Hazards deemed high and very high risks for the community and workers include groundwater contamination from leachate, airborne contaminants from combustion and non-combustion processes, and worker injuries associated with waste combustion. Control measures for each are identified, together with a corresponding cost analysis. Adding a final top cover to the landfill and introducing a collection, transport, and treatment system for the biogas would address hazards presenting high health risks but are also among the highest costs. While we demonstrate the approach and utility of an SWSP in a research context, future work is needed to assess the use of the SWSP by local communities or SWM utilities.Highlights: The structure and development of a solid waste safety plan (SWSP) are discussed. Introduction. Domestic waste management is an extremely important issue for all countries of the world, especially for the countries of the former Soviet Union, as the current state of solid waste disposal in Ukraine is extremely unsatisfactory. According to the European Commission, the amount of waste in the European Union has increased in recent years to more than 2.5 billion tons per year. The results of the Waste Atlas report on the world's 50 largest landfills show that 64 million people are affected by the 50 largest landfills every day. Ukraine has a total of 6045 landfills and dumpsites. The general trend in Ukraine, in contrast to European countries, is a low level of recycling and utilization of solid waste and a high rate of landfill disposal. The vast majority of landfills (80 to 90%) operate in overload mode. Landfills, in particular solid waste landfills, are the main pollutants of the atmosphere, hydrosphere and soil. Therefore, determining the level of environmental hazard of heavy metals in the soil as a result of the impact of landfills and solid waste dumps is very important. Objective. The purpose of the article is to determine the impact of solid waste landfills on public health due to soil contamination with heavy metals. Methodology. In order to determine the level of environmental hazard of household waste storage at landfills and dumps, the paper assesses the risk to public health from soil contamination in the area of the Hrybovychi landfill (Lviv oblast), Rohan landfill (Kharkiv oblast), and Novovodolazhske landfill (Kharkiv oblast). The risk to public health from soil contamination at solid waste landfills was assessed using the traditional US EPA method and a new method for determining the potential risk to public health from soil contamination with heavy metals. Results. The article compares two fundamentally different methodological approaches to determining the level of environmental hazard of soil contamination with heavy metals. The risk to public health from soil contamination on the territory of solid waste landfills according to the US EPA method corresponds to hazard class 5 (extremely high hazard level) according to all calculations. The results of the assessment of the potential risk to public health from soil contamination using the new method at solid waste landfills correspond to hazard classes 2-4. Comparison of methodological principles for assessing the risk to public health from soil pollution has shown the advantages of using the new method of potential risk assessment. The use of the new method of assessing the potential risk to public health from soil pollution will help improve science-based management of household waste and direct financial resources to reduce the environmental hazard of soil and land pollution in Ukraine. Determining the environmental hazard of soil pollution due to the impact of landfills and solid waste dumps makes it possible to prioritize the implementation of environmental protection measures and will contribute to the implementation of environmentally sound environmental management, so the research is of practical importance.

Here determination of the level dimensions regularity of the multicomponent contamination zones (by heavy metals and petroleum products) of the soils adjacent to the municipal solid waste landfill. The dependences of the mercury, copper and zinc concentrations in the soil on the distance to the landfill of municipal solid waste were determined, similar dependence was specified for petroleum products for a distance of up to 500 m. The research employed the regression analysis technique for investigating single-factor experiments and other paired patterns. The selection of a suitable function was based on commonly utilized options, determined by the criterion of achieving the maximum correlation coefficient value. Regression analyses were conducted by employing linearizing transformations, facilitating the conversion of non-linear regularities into linear forms. Graphical dependences, describing the change in the concentrations of individual soil pollutants with the distance from the municipal solid waste landfill have been built, they enable to demonstrating the satisfactory convergence of theoretical outcomes with empirical observations was achieved. The level regularity of multicomponent soil contamination (with petroleum products and heavy metals) at the distance from the municipal solid waste landfill has been obtained, it’s required for determining the dimentions of the zones of multicomponent soil contamination. Applying the method of iterations, the dimensions of the multicomponent contamination zones (with petroleum products and heavy metals) of the soils, adjacent to the landfill of municipal solid waste have been determined: very heavy pollution – 22.93 m, heavy pollution – 81.77 m, average pollution – 474.9 m from the foot of the landfill.
