This study is structured to address the problem of mapping the bottom of shallow and ultra-shallow inland water bodies using high-resolution satellite imagery. These environments, with their diverse distribution of optically relevant components, pose a challenge to traditional mapping methods. The study was conducted on several research issues, each focusing on a specific aspect of the SDB, related to the selection of spectral bands and regression models, regression models creation, evaluation of the influence of the number and spatial distribution of reference soundings, and assessment of the quality of the bathymetric surface, with a focus on microtopography. The study utilized basic empirical techniques, incorporating high-precision reference data acquired via an unmanned surface vessel (USV) integrated with a single-beam echosounder (SBES), and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver measurements. The performed investigation allowed the optimization of a methodology for bathymetry acquisition of such areas by identifying the impact of individual processing components. The first results indicated the usefulness of the proposed approach, which can be confirmed by the values of the obtained RMS errors of elaborated bathymetric surfaces in the range of up to several centimeters in some study cases. The work also points to the problematic nature of this type of study, which can contribute to further research into the application of remote sensing techniques for bathymetry, especially during acquisition in optically complex waters. Lake Reserv Manag. 40:285–302 Vessel-generated waves (or wakes) are perceived as an important stressor in both marine and freshwater systems, and they are an increasingly important focus of coastal management. Recent studies suggest that wakes account for a significant portion of the total wave energy in fetch-limited environments and in turn have the potential to resuspend sediment, erode shorelines, degrade water quality, damage infrastructure, and disrupt aquatic ecosystems, in addition to being considered a safety hazard and a nuisance. To assess the relative contribution of wakes to the total wave energy, monitoring was completed at 32 sites across 7 fetch-limited lakes in Ontario, Canada between 2020 and 2023. The percent wake energy was inversely related to the average fetch length, with deviations to the relationship dependent on whether the site was open, an embayment or along a narrow section of the lake. A survey of property owners and residents suggests that the perceived impact of wakes also varies with the fetch length. Shoreline erosion and degraded water quality were identified as primary impacts of wakes in lakes with the smallest average fetch, but very few respondents provided direct evidence of boat wake impacts. Most respondents described vessel operation, experience of the vessel operator and conflict over different boating uses as the primary issues associated with wakes. While boat wakes may contribute a significant portion of the wave energy in fetch-limited lakes, further research is required to determine when and where they may represent a physical and ecological stressor rather than being just a nuisance. Nutrient enrichment and climate warming threaten freshwater systems. Metabolic theory and the paradox of enrichment predict that both stressors independently can lead to simpler food‐webs having fewer nodes, shorter food‐chains and lower connectance, but cancel each other's effects when simultaneously present. Yet, these theoretical predictions remain untested in complex natural systems. We inferred the food‐web structure of 256 lakes and 373 streams from standardized fish community samplings in France. Contrary to theoretical predictions, we found that warming shortens fish food‐chain length and that this effect was magnified in enriched streams and lakes. Additionally, lakes experiencing enrichment exhibit lower connectance in their fish food‐webs. Our study suggests that warming and enrichment interact to magnify food‐web simplification in nature, raising further concerns about the fate of freshwater systems as climate change effects will dramatically increase in the coming decades. Hypophthalmichthys nobilis are widely distributed in the Yangtze River basin and its related lakes. They are an important economic fish species and are a famous cultured species known as the "Four Famous Domestic Fishes" in China. Currently, with the fishing ban in the Yangtze River basin, fishing for H. nobilis in the natural water bodies of the Yangtze River basin has been completely prohibited. In order to identify the sources of H. nobilis appearing in the market, further control and accountability is necessary to trace the sources of H. nobilis in the Yangtze River basin and its related water bodies. Therefore, this study identified and traced different sources of H. nobilis through muscle element fingerprint analysis (EFA). The results show that H. nobilis from different stations have characteristic element compositions. The characteristic element of H. nobilis from Wuhan (WH) is Pb, which is significantly higher than that in other stations; the characteristic element from Anqing (AQ) is Hg, which is significantly higher than that in other stations; and the characteristic element from Taihu (TH) is Al, which is significantly higher than that in other water areas. Multivariate analysis selected different spatial distribution patterns in four discriminative element ratios (Pb/Ca, Cr/Ca, Na/Ca, and Al/Ca) in the muscle of H. nobilis in the Yangtze River basin and its related lakes. This study suggests that the screened discriminative elements can be used to visually distinguish different sources of H. nobilis and to quickly trace and verify the origin of newly emerging samples. Therefore, the use of selected discriminative element fingerprint features to trace the origin of new samples has been proven to be feasible. By further discriminating and verifying the muscle element fingerprints of new samples, the discrimination rate is high. All living creatures in nature are constantly exposed to ionising radiation, which is emitted from natural and artificial radiation sources. For this reason, it is important to monitor the levels of radioactivity in living spaces and visited areas. In this study, natural (238U, 232Th, 40K) and artificial (137Cs) radioactivity concentrations in sediment samples taken from Borçka Black Lake located on the Nature Park in Artvin province were determined using a high purity germanium detector (HPGe). It was determined that 238U, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs radioisotope concentrations in the sediment samples varied between 8.73 and 26.45, 7.01 and 22.98, 289.92 and 578.98, and 6.26 and 70.96 Bq kg−1, respectively. Mean radioactivity concentrations were found to be 14.99 ± 0.89 Bq kg−1 for 238U, 13.85 ± 1.10 Bq kg−1 for 232Th, 473.67 ± 14.21 Bq kg−1 for 40K and 35.06 ± 0.96 Bq kg−1 for 137Cs. In order to evaluate the radiological hazards, radium equivalent activity, external hazard index, absorbed dose rate in the air, the annual effective dose rate and excess life time cancer risk were calculated and compared with the values recommended by international organisations. As a result, it has been shown with this study that the radioactivity caused by the examined radioisotopes will not pose any health risk for the visitors of Borçka Black Lake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most information on rotifers living in lake sands comes from the 1930s, when the first reports on this subject by Jerzy Wiszniewski appeared. After some decline in the interest in lake psammon in the following years, research on lake psammon returned in the last decade of the twentieth century. The last comprehensive review of ecology of psammon Rotifera was included in the excellent 1998 publication by Schmid-Araya on Rotifera in interstitial sediments. More than 20 papers have been published since that time. So far, research conducted almost exclusively in the northern hemisphere have dealt with issues related to distribution of rotifers, their species structure and diversity as well as to their relation to abiotic and biotic factors. The aim of the present study was to collect all available information on psammon rotifers, assess the shortcomings in our knowledge and fill these gaps with the results of some of my recent research. The results of the study show that the species richness of this group in geographical terms is still unknown. It means we also do not know the level of endemism among the psammon rotifers. In the context of escalating climate change-induced impacts on water resources, robust monitoring tools are imperative. Satellite altimetry, benefiting from technical improvement such as the use of SAR and InSAR techniques and tracking modes considering topography, is emerging as a crucial means of estimating lake levels, data that are fundamental to understanding climate dynamics. This study delves into the use of satellite-altimetry-determined water levels to analyze changes in water storage and superficial area in Lake Ranco, in south-central Chile, from 1995 to 2023. The main objective is to provide valuable information for water-resource management and policy formulation. Leveraging AlTiS software (v2.2.9-0-gf5938ab), radar-altimetry data from the missions ERS-2, ENVISAT, SARAL, and Sentinel-3A were processed, generating a complete time series of water levels. The lake-level data were complemented by the bathymetric data for the lake to obtain the variation in the area and volume in the period 1995–2023. These results were analyzed with respect to hydrometeorological data from the study area, such as precipitation, temperature, relative humidity, and potential evapotranspiration. Additionally, the effects of ENSO (ENSO 3.4 index) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation index (PDO) were considered. Results reveal a strong correlation between altimetry-derived lake levels and observed in situ data, with a mean square error of 0.04 m, a coefficient of determination of 0.99, an index of agreement of 0.99, and a Kling−Gupta efficiency of 0.90. The analysis of climatic variables showed that variations in lake level coincide with changes in precipitation within the study area and also showed the influence of variations in temperature and potential evapotranspiration. Additionally, the effects of the ENSO phenomenon can be seen within the study area for its cold phase (i.e., La Niña) in the 2010–2012 period and for its warm phase (i.e., El Niño) in the 2015–2016 period, with a decrease and increase in precipitation, respectively. These effects were enhanced when the cold and warm phases of the ENSO and PDO phenomena occured. The successful application of satellite altimetry demonstrated in this study underscores its critical role in advancing our understanding and management of water resources amidst changing climate scenarios. Karagöl, with the village of Sivas Province Hafik Çimenyenice Zara County township is a small lake located between the villages of Bulakbaşı. 1300m altitude average of 5-6 ha of the lake at a depth of 4-5 m. Obruk a type of geological formation, and is covered with pine trees around. This study was being carried since November 2011 and so on Samples that used for water quality parameters analysis were collected once in a month. Water quality parameters, dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity, pH, temperature and electrical conductivity (E.İ) was measured directly in the field with the help of devices. Other water parameters as suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total alkalinity, total hardness, total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, phosphate, sulfate, sulfite, free chlorine, sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, lead, copper and cadmium are analyzed. Phosphorus (P) is a crucial nutrient in lake ecosystems and organic phosphorus (Po) is a significant component. However, the distribution characteristics and migration behaviour of Po in ice–water–sediment systems under freezing and thawing conditions in cold and arid regions remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the forms of Po and its contribution to endogenous P pollution. We selected three lakes (Dai, Hu, and Wu Lake) and employed phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR) techniques to analyse the following: (1) The total phosphorus (TP) content, which was the highest in the water from Dai Lake (0.16 mg/L), with substantial seasonal variation observed in Wu Lake, where P content was four times higher in summer than in winter because of farmland drainage. (2) Eutrophication analysis, which indicated that Dai Lake had significantly higher eutrophication levels than Wu Lake, with P being the controlling factor in Dai Lake and both N and P in Wu Lake. The proportion of Po in the TP content was 90%, 70%, and 55% for Wu, Dai, and Hu Lake, respectively, indicating that Po was the main component of eutrophic lakes. (3) 31P-NMR, which revealed that orthophosphate (Ortho-P) and monoester phosphate (Mon-P) were the main P components in the winter, with a higher P content in Dai Lake. Ortho-P has a higher content in ice, indicating that inorganic phosphorus (Pi) migration is the main factor in ice–water media. Mon-P showed multiple peaks in Dai Lake, indicating a complex composition of adenosine monophosphate and glucose-1-phosphate. (4) The ice–water phase change simulation experiments, which showed that phosphate was the least repelled in ice, while pyrophosphate (Pyro-P) and macromolecular P were more repelled. Adding sediment enhanced the migration of P but did not change the repulsion of macromolecular P, suggesting the molecular structure as the main influencing factor. These results provide important scientific evidence for the quantitative analysis of Po pollution in lake water environments, aiding in P load reduction and risk prevention and control. Using relative reflectance measurements from the Mastcam‐Z and SuperCam instruments on the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, we assess the variability of Fe mineralogy in Noachian/Hesperian‐aged rocks at Jezero crater. The results reveal diverse Fe3+ and Fe2+ minerals. The igneous crater floor, where small amounts of Fe3+‐phyllosilicates and poorly crystalline Fe3+‐oxyhydroxides have been reported, is spectrally similar to most oxidized basalts observed at Gusev crater. At the base of the western Jezero sedimentary fan, new spectral type points to an Fe‐bearing mineral assemblage likely dominated by Fe2+. By contrast, most strata exposed at the fan front show signatures of Fe3+‐oxides (mostly fine‐grained crystalline hematite), Fe3+‐sulfates (potentially copiapites), strong signatures of hydration, and among the strongest signatures of red hematite observed in situ, consistent with materials having experienced vigorous water‐rock interactions and/or higher degrees of diagenesis under oxidizing conditions. The fan top strata show hydration but little to no signs of Fe oxidation likely implying that some periods of fan construction occurred either during a reduced atmosphere era or during short‐lived aqueous activity of liquid water in contact with an oxidized atmosphere. We also report the discovery of alternating cm‐scale bands of red and gray layers correlated with hydration and oxide variability, which has not yet been observed elsewhere on Mars. This could result from syn‐depositional fluid chemistry variations, possibly as seasonal processes, or diagenetic overprint of oxidized fluids percolating through strata having variable permeability. Plain Language Summary: The oxidation states of the atmosphere and waters (whether rich or poor in oxidants such as oxygen) of Mars and their evolution are poorly constrained but can be recorded in the iron (Fe) mineralogy of rocks. Using data from the Perseverance rover, we analyzed the Fe mineralogy of ∼4–3 Ga old rocks from an ancient lake at Jezero crater. Oxidized Fe is found in igneous rocks and lowermost portions of sedimentary rocks, carried by clays and poorly crystalline oxides in the former and by sulfates and crystalline oxides in the latter, pointing to past action of oxidizing fluids, affecting more intensely the sedimentary rocks. Fe shows poor to no signs of oxidation in the uppermost strata, which might be evidence for a reducing atmosphere during sediment deposition or that the aqueous environment was too cold or too short‐lived to oxidize minerals. We also report Fe mineralogy variability at the cm‐scale in alternating colored layers, which has not been observed previously on Mars and could possibly mean that seasonal processes are recorded at Jezero crater. The objective of this study was to explore the environmental factors having the greatest influence on the distribution and abundance of epipelic diatom species in different wetlands in southern Spain. We previously defined four groups of conductivity categories: fresh (< 0.8 mS cm−1), oligosaline (< 8 mS cm−1), mesosaline (8–30 mS cm−1) and eusaline (> 30 mS cm−1). A dbRDA analysis performed on a subset of 36 of the 53 wetlands, using a total of 25 environmental variables, showed that five environmental variables (conductivity, pH, wetland area, silicates, and total suspended solids) were the best explanatory variables for the diatom assemblage, with conductivity being the main explanatory variable. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) analysis performed on the set of 53 wetlands revealed significant differences in diatom composition among the four conductivity groups. The key species in the eusaline group were Tryblionella pararostrata, Halamphora sp.1 and Cocconeis euglypta, whereas in the mesosaline and oligosaline group, these were Navicula veneta, Tryblionella hungarica and Nitzschia inconspicua. Finally, in the fresh group dominated Achnanthidium minutissimum, Navicula veneta and Gomphonema exilissimum. This study on epipelic diatoms can therefore contribute to the knowledge of these organisms in a European region with a high diversity of wetland typologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Indonesia, a country in which 70% of its area is water, people relate easily to both the sea and inland water, such as rivers and lakes. Authors consequently also find inspiration in these bodies of water, expressing their admiration towards the beauty of nature. For example, while they originate from different literary eras, “Danau Toba” (Lake Toba) by Sitor Situmorang, “Sepantun Laut” (Like the Sea) by J.E. Tatengkeng, “Akulah Si Telaga” (I am the Lake) by Sapardi Djoko Damono, “Apa Kata Bintang di Laut” (What the Star Tells the Sea) by Iwan Simatupang, “Kali Martapura” (Martapura River) by Hidjaz Yamani, and “Perempuan Pesisiran” (Women on the Coasts) by Iman Sembada all reflect the dynamic portrayals of water in Indonesian literature, as a charm of nature from each poet’s perspective or a framework for criticizing the realities of the lives of the people who live alongside water. This research analyzed these authors’ interconnectedness with nature, employing the qualitative descriptive method and using ecocriticism theory, which explores how nature is depicted in the respective poems and connects human relationships to nature. The results showed that the poets easily relate to the river, lake, or sea, and aside from describing the beauty of nature based on fond memories, their poems are used as critiques of the changing relationship between humans and nature, as well as between humans and humans. Their portrayals of nature further reveal the feelings of belonging engendered by water, which they use as criticism for the destruction of nature and societal changes stemming from the need for progress.

The determination of a lake or natural watercourse shoreline is the subject of various administrative proceedings relating to, among others, the engineering of riverbeds, construction of hydro-technical facilities, remediation work, land division, or delimitation of parcels. The provisions of law, while laying out the rules for determining shorelines, do not explicitly specify the measurement method to follow. All the more so, as many shores of lakes and watercourses are among terrain details that are difficult to measure due to their varied accessibility, which depends on the terrain, vegetation, and water conditions. The purpose of this paper is to compare selected methods for determining the shoreline of watercourses and lakes in terms of their applicability under different environmental conditions under current legislation. This study comprises an assessment of the suitability of the applied methods of shoreline measurement under varying field conditions and their applicability in surveying work on shoreline determination. Surveys were conducted on 3 reservoirs and one watercourse using geodetic, photogrammetric, and remote sensing techniques, and the suitability of the various methods was evaluated with respect to the field conditions of the measurements.

Abstract Lakes are hotspots for the biogeochemical processing of carbon, including dissolved organic matter (DOM). A less degradable fraction of DOM, preserved for a long time, can be categorized as recalcitrant DOM (RDOM). Lake RDOM is an important but neglected carbon sink, and its characteristics and transformation processes remain largely unknown.

This study compared two different methods, the satellite altimetry-based and DEM (digital elevation model)-based, for estimating lake water volume changes. We focused on 34 lakes in China as the testing sites to compare the two methods for lake water volume changes from 2005 to 2020. The satellite altimetry-based method used water levels provided by the DAHITI (Database for Hydrological Time Series of Inland Waters) data and surface areas derived from Landsat imagery. The DEM-based method used the SRTM DEM data in combination with Landsat-derived lake extents. Our results showed a high degree of consistency in lake water volume changes estimated between the two methods (R2 > 0.90), but each method has its limitations. In terms of temporal coverage, the satellite altimetry-based method with the DAHITI data is limited by missing water level data in certain periods. On Kerrera island, poorly dated braided stream conglomerates and sandstones are interbedded with finer lake siltstones and shales, with land plants, fish and arthropods, including ‘millipedes’. Crystallization dates for minerals in the overlying Lorne Plateau Lave are older than 425 Ma (Upper Silurian Ludfordian), yet palynological data are supposed to give an early Devonian (419 Ma) age. Detrital zircon U/Pb dates of sediments enclosing the fish beds give two clusters of dates, one Proterozoic and the other Silurian. The most concordant youngest single grain date of 427.0 ± 4.5 Ma (0% discordance) gives the maximum age of the Fish beds and is consistent that the radiometric dates of the overlying rapidly erupted lavas. This maximum age is slightly older than that of the ‘millipede’-bearing Cowie fish bed with maximum age of 414.3 ± 7.1 Ma, which make the Kerrera ‘millipedes’ the oldest so far dated. Cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater sources are a global concern, and gaining insight into their causes is crucial for effective resource management and control. In this study, we present a novel computational framework for the causal analysis of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) in Lake Kinneret. Our framework integrates Convergent Cross Mapping (CCM) and Extended CCM (ECCM) causal networks with Bayesian Network (BN) models. The constructed CCM–ECCM causal networks and BN models unveil significant interactions among factors influencing cyanoHAB formation. These interactions have been validated by domain experts and supported by evidence from peer‐reviewed publications. Our findings suggest that Microcystis flos‐aquae levels are influenced not only by community structure but also by ammonium, phosphate, oxygen, and temperature levels in the weeks preceding bloom occurrences. We demonstrated a non‐parametric computational framework for causal analysis of a multivariate ecosystem. Our framework offers a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving M. flos‐aquae blooms in Lake Kinneret. It captures complex interactions and provides an explainable prediction model. By considering causal relationships, temporal dynamics, and joint probabilities of environmental factors, the proposed framework enhances our understanding of cyanoHABs in Lake Kinneret. The sources of the pollution in lakes might be quite complex and difficult to control. This study analyzed and evaluated the pollution control effects of a typical lake (Nansi Lake) located in northern China through judicial means. The water quality at 52 sampling sites was investigated to assess results from individual cases located in heavily polluted areas. The water quality of the entire lake and stream was further assessed using data from the National Automatic Water Quality Monitoring System. Finally, 70 kinds of pesticides from 21 sites in the lake were analyzed to assess the reduction of the agricultural diffused pollution. The results show that the water quality of the lake in 2021 has been significantly improved compared to 2020. From April 2021, China has initiated a series of procuratorial environmental public interest litigation to protect this lake, with 205 cases closed including 185 administrative cases and 20 civil cases. The results show that procuratorial environmental public interest litigation has made great contributions to solving the long-standing pollution problem in Nansi Lake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, as global climate change and local disturbances such as wildfires continue, long- and short-term changes in the high-latitude vegetation systems have been observed in various studies. Although remote sensing technology using optical satellites has been widely used in understanding vegetation dynamics in high-latitude areas, there has been limited understanding of various landscape changes at different spatiotemporal scales, their mutual relationships, and overall long-term landscape changes. The objective of this study is to devise a change monitoring strategy that can effectively observe landscape changes at different spatiotemporal scales in the boreal ecosystems from temporally sparse time series remote sensing data. We presented a new post-classification-based change analysis scheme and applied it to time series Landsat data for the central Yakutian study area. Spectral variability between time series data has been a major problem in the analysis of changes that make it difficult to distinguish long- and short-term land cover changes from seasonal growth activities. To address this issue effectively, two ideas in the time series classification, such as the stepwise classification and the lateral stacking strategies were implemented in the classification process. The proposed classification results showed consistently higher overall accuracies of more than 90% obtained in all classes throughout the study period. The temporal classification results revealed the distinct spatial and temporal patterns of the land cover changes in central Yakutia. The spatiotemporal distribution of the short-term class illustrated that the ecosystem disturbance caused by fire could be affected by local thermal and hydrological conditions of the active layer as well as climatic conditions. On the other hand, the long-term class changes revealed land cover trajectories that could not be explained by monotonic increase or decrease. To characterize the long-term land cover change patterns, we applied a piecewise linear model with two line segments to areal class changes. During the former half of the study period, which corresponds to the 2000s, the areal expansion of lakes on the eastern Lena River terrace was the dominant feature of the land cover change. On the other hand, the land cover changes in the latter half of the study period, which corresponds to the 2010s, exhibited that lake area decreased, particularly in the thermokarst lowlands close to the Lena and Aldan rivers. This study investigated the level of dissolved heavy metals in the water of Longhu Lake and focused on the speciation, mobility, and risks of heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in sediment. The levels of heavy metals in the water were found to be below the thresholds set by the Chinese safe drinking water standard. The highest average percentages of Cr, Ni, Zn, and As were bound with residual fractions, while Pb and Cu were bound with reducible fractions. Additionally, the highest percentage of Cd and Mn was bound to the acid-soluble fraction in the sediment. These findings suggest that Cd, Mn, Pb, and Cu likely originated from anthropogenic sources in the lake. There was a strong correlation between total organic carbon (TOC) and metal fractions in the sediment, indicating that TOC may play a role in transporting heavy metal fractions. Risk assessment code values for Cd and Mn indicated higher risks and mobility, while Ni, Cu, and Zn showed medium risks and mobility for aquatic biota. In Indonesia, a country in which 70% of its area is water, people relate easily to both the sea and inland water, such as rivers and lakes. Authors consequently also find inspiration in these bodies of water, expressing their admiration towards the beauty of nature. For example, while they originate from different literary eras, "Danau Toba" (Lake Toba) by Sitor Situmorang, "Sepantun Laut" (Like the Sea) by J.E. Tatengkeng, "Akulah Si Telaga" (I am the Lake) by Sapardi Djoko Damono, "Apa Kata Bintang di Laut" (What the Star Tells the Sea) by Iwan Simatupang, "Kali Martapura" (Martapura River) by Hidjaz Yamani, and "Perempuan Pesisiran" (Women on the Coasts) by Iman Sembada all reflect the dynamic portrayals of water in Indonesian literature, as a charm of nature from each poet's perspective or a framework for criticizing the realities of the lives of the people who live alongside water. This research analyzed these authors' interconnectedness with nature, employing the qualitative descriptive method and using ecocriticism theory, which explores how nature is depicted in the respective poems and connects human relationships to nature. The results showed that the poets easily relate to the river, lake, or sea, and aside from describing the beauty of nature based on fond memories, their poems are used as critiques of the changing relationship between humans and nature, as well as between humans and humans. Their portrayals of nature further reveal the feelings of belonging engendered by water, which they use as criticism for the destruction of nature and societal changes stemming from the need for progress. A sorption–diffusion model of 137Cs absorption by bottom soils has been used to forecast 137Cs concentration in global fallouts and emergency release from the Chernobyl NPP in water of the deep (Hav = 30 m) Lake Onega. The natural conditions and the morphohydrological characteristics of the lake caused a rapid (2–3 years) transformation of 137Cs-polluted water to pseudoequilibrium concentrations. For 56 years (from 1964 to 2020), the concentration of 137Cs in water was determined with acceptable accuracy by a sorption-diffusion model of 137Cs adsorption by bottom soils with coefficients of sorption Kd = 4000 L/kg and diffusion D = 1.0 × 10–7 cm2/s. The effect of water exchange in the lake on 137Cs migration is taken into account in the characteristic of conditional exchange of Lake Onega water W = 16.4 years. The correctness of the forecast of water pollution by 137Cs was verified by comparison with experimental data and the conditions of 137Cs pollution of the waters of deep lakes in the northwestern Russia and Finnish Lapland. Mytilopsis sallei is a small bivalve that has invaded Asian waters, including southeast Asia. This shellfish has become a pest in coastal and estuary waters in Southeast Asia. This study is the first report on the presence and structure of the M. sallei population in Indonesia, precisely in the coastal lakes of Medan City, North Sumatra Province. This research was conducted in Lake Siombak, Medan City, North Sumatra, which is one of the tropical tidal lakes in Indonesia. Mytilopsis sallei shellfish samples were taken for a year from September 2018--August 2019. Mytilopsis sallei were obtained using a Petersen Grab with a mouth opening of 30 x 30 cm. The measurement of M. sallei consisted of the shell length, shell width, shell thickness, and body weight. The analysis of the population structure parameters with ELEFAN I was accommodated in the FiSAT II software. Spatially, M. sallei highest density in Siombak Lake is at station 5 with 24,100 and 23,948 ind.m-2 and the lowest at station 7 is only 967 ind.m-2. Monthly, M. sallei hase the highest density in the dry season (Feb--Jul) compared to the wet season (Aug--Jan). The density of M. sallei in the dry season reaches 1213--13,187 ind.m-2 and in wet seasons reaches 369-3,029 ind.m-2. The Mytilopsis sallei in Siombak Lake has a maximum length of 42.14 mm and the smallest size is 3.00 mm. The growth model of M. sallei in Lake Siombak is Lt = 42.14 (1-e-1.1(t-0.1598)). Physicochemical factors, plankton biomass, and sediment were measured from 1998 to 2000 at two months' interim in a eutrophic shoreline Lake, Hwajinpo, in Korea. The lake is isolated from the sea by a narrow sand hill. Coastal zone is well vegetated with floating leaved marine plants. The lake basin is divided into two sub-basins by a shallow ridge. It has disturbance of seawater by stormy waves. Stable chemoclines are made by salinity variations at depth of 1 m around the year. Dissolved Oxygen was often very low (<1 mgO2/L) at hypolimnion. Temperature reverse were detected in November. Nitrate and Ammonium concentrations were also very low (< 0.1 mgN/L), while TN was usually 2.0~3.5 mgN/L. In general, TN/TP was lower than the Redfield ratio. Transparency was 0.2~1.7m, and COD, TP, and TN of sediment were 3.1~40.3 mg O2/g, 0.91~1.39 mgP/g, and 0.34~3.07 mgN/g, respectively. Phytoplankton chlorophyll-a concentrations were mostly over 40 mg/m³. Two basins showed different phytoplankton groups with Oscillatoria sp., Trachelomonas sp., Schizochlamys gelatinosa, and Anabaena spiroides dominant in South basin, and with Trachelomonas sp., Schroederia sp., Schizochlamys gelatinosa, and Trachelomonas sp. dominant in the North basin. Artificial neural networks offer a viable route in assessing and understanding the presence and concentration of heavy metals that can cause dangerous complications in the wider context of water quality prediction for the sustainability of the ecosystem. In order to estimate the heavy metal concentrations in Iznik Lake, which is an important water source for the surrounding communities, characterization data were taken from five different water sources flowing into the lake between 2015 and 2021. These characterization results were evaluated with IBM SPSS Statistics 23 software, with the addition of the lake water quality system. For this purpose, seven distinct physicochemical parameters were measured and monitored in Karasu, Kırandere, Olukdere and Sölöz water sources flowing into the lake, to serve as input data. Concentration levels of 15 distinct heavy metals in Karsak Stream originating from the lake were as the output. Specifically, Sn for Karasu (0.999), Sb for Kırandere (1.000), Cr for Olukdere (1.000) and Pb and Se for Sölöz (0.995) indicate parameter estimation R2 coefficients close to 1.000. Sn stands out as the common heavy metal parameter with best estimation prospects. Given the importance of the independent variable in estimating heavy metal pollution, conductivity, COD, COD and temperature stood out as the most effective parameters for Karasu, Olukdere, Kırandere and Sölöz, respectively. The ANN model emerges as a good prediction tool that can be used effectively in determining the heavy metal pollution in the lake as part of the efforts to protect the water budget of Lake Iznik and to eliminate the existing pollution. The study of algological material from tundra lakes of the adjacent territories of the Ust-Lena Reserve (Yakutia) using scanning electron microscopy revealed a new species of diatoms for science—Buryatia strelnikovae sp. nov. The new species has morphological similarities with other species of the genus B. oviformis and B. crassa. It differs from the former in the larger number of striae and areoles per 10 µm and from the latter in the smaller length and width of the valve and a larger number of striae and areoles per 10 µm. Anodonta woodiana samples from Xidong Water Works and Mashan in Taihu Lake, Yiyang near Dongting Lake, and Taiping Harbor in Gehu Lake preserved in a “specimen bank” established for the “Freshwater Mussel Watch” monitoring program were used to determine the historical metal backgrounds from different waters in the present study. The elements Co, Ni, Mo, Cd, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Ba, and Pb were determined using A. woodiana from four lacustrine sites. The results showed that Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Ba, and Pb were all detected, whereas Co, Ni, Mo, and Cd were below the detection limits of 0.0165, 0.0106, 0.0189 and 0.0182 µg kg− 1, respectively. In particular, A. woodiana was noted to be an unusual Mn hyperaccumulator (ranged from 5124.09 to 13015.47 µg g− 1). The results of discriminant analysis showed that the four water samples could be accurately separated. Lake pollution has attracted concerns worldwide; especially the excessive accumulation of trace elements (TEs) and rare earth elements (REEs) in bottom sediments can pose a serious threat to ecosystem health. However, there is still a knowledge gap on the level of sediment pollution in lakes isolated from the direct impact of pollution sources, their spatial variability, and also on the factors influencing this state. The aim of this study is to investigate the level and spatial variability of TEs and REEs concentrations, as well as to determine their source and the factors determining their distribution in the bottom sediments of Lake Ostrowite. Lake Ostrowite is the largest and deepest water body located in the Bory Tuholskie National Park (in northern Poland), which completely isolates the lake from the direct impact of pollution sources. The study covered analyses of 32 surface samples of bottom sediments. The concentrations of 24 TEs and 14 REEs were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP‐QQQ‐MS). The assessment of the enrichment of bottom sediments in TEs and REEs employed geochemical background values (GBV) that provided the basis for the calculation of relative concentrations and geochemical indices. The determination of their sources and supply routes was based on the cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The obtained results point to the enrichment of the bottom sediments with TEs and REEs. Relative concentration values of TEs and REEs in reference to geochemical background values were in ranges from 0.01 to 7.31, at an average of 0.99, and from 0.03 to 4.29, averaging 1.76, respectively. The enrichment factor values show moderately severe enrichment of sediments at the study sites. This was primarily determined by the concentrations of Ag (from the TEs group) and Lu (from the REEs group). The metal pollution index values showed an approximate spatial distribution of points in terms of the presence of TEs and REEs. The lowest concentrations of TEs and REEs occurred on the eastern shore of the western basin of Lake Ostrowite. TEs and REEs concentrations in sediments are positively correlated with the content of organic matter and depth and negatively correlated with distance of the sampling point from the river outflow from Lake Ostrowite. On the eastern shore of the western basin, TEs and REEs concentrations are additionally shaped by wind, predominantly from the western direction. With water wave action, organic matter is transported to the central part of the western basin, where it is accumulated. Since the lake is isolated from point and nonpoint pollution sources, relevant from a biogeochemical point of view are dry and wet depositions from the atmosphere as well as aquatic vegetation, shoreline vegetation, forest litter, soil, and groundwater. In this study, we quantify the differences in gross primary production (GPP), respiration (R), and algal nutrient limitation (nitrogen and phosphorus) in the littoral and pelagic habitats of an oligotrophic Patagonian lake (southern South America). We used submerged high frequency sensors that measure light, temperature, and dissolved oxygen and wind data to calculate GPP and R in both lake habitats. In addition, we carry out nutrient enrichment bioassays with nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate to determine which nutrient(s) limit algal growth in each lake habitat. On average, the productivity rate was 7.2 times higher at the epi-littoral (32.0 to 5.3 mmol O2 m−2 d−1) relative to the epi-pelagic (4.1 to 1.3 mmol O2 m−2 d−1). Algal growth in the littoral habitat was limited by nitrate and ammonium, while the pelagic habitat was co-limited by nitrogen (nitrate or ammonium) and phosphorus. Our work demonstrates that the littoral habitat of a Patagonian oligotrophic lake is more productive than the pelagic habitat and that the nutrients limiting algal growth in both habitats are different. Greenhouse gases released by lakes are considered important and are underestimated sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Methane is an important component of greenhouse gas emissions from lakes. Previous studies have shown that the CH4 production and oxidation processes in lake ecosystems are mainly controlled by the activities of methanogens and methane-oxidizing bacteria in water bodies and sediments. Factors such as water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, and nutritional status may affect the CH4 emission flux in lakes. This study used the Web of Science and CNKI as search platforms to investigate the CH4 emission flux at the water air interface of 80 lakes in different regions of the world. The results showed that the CH4 emission flux was 2.56 mmol·m-2 ·d-1 (ranging from 0.001 to 40.3 mmol·m-2 ·d-1 ). The CH4 emission flux from lakes in South America and Europe was significantly higher than that of lakes in Africa, and the CH4 emissions from eutrophic lakes to the atmosphere was significantly higher than that from medium and poornutrient lakes. Lakes with an area of less than 1 km² emitted significantly more CH4 into the atmosphere than lakes with an area of 10 km² to 100 km² and lakes with an area of more than 100 km² . The release of CH4 into the atmosphere from lakes in low altitude areas was significantly higher than that from lakes in high altitude areas and lakes at ultra-high altitudes. Methane emissions into the atmosphere by lakes in summer was significantly higher than that in spring, autumn, and winter. During the warm season, eutrophication in low altitude areas and small shallow lakes were hot spots for CH4 emissions. In the future, further integration of microbial production and CH4 oxidation mechanisms and strengthening of research on daily variation is needed to estimate CH4 emission flux to provide a scientific basis for studying the amount of CH4 emissions from lakes considering global climate change. Climate change has myriad impacts on ecosystems, but the mechanisms by which it affects individual species can be difficult to pinpoint. One strategy to discover such mechanisms is to identify a specific ecological factor related to survival or reproduction and determine how that factor is affected by climate. Here we used Landsat imagery to calculate water clarity for 127 lakes in northern Wisconsin from 1995 to 2021 and thus investigate the effect of clarity on the body condition of an aquatic visual predator, the common loon (Gavia immer). In addition, we examined rainfall and temperature as potential predictors of water clarity. Body mass tracked July water clarity strongly in loon chicks, which grow chiefly in that month, but weakly in adult males and females. Long‐term mean water clarity was negatively related to chick mass but positively related to adult male mass, suggesting that loons foraging in generally clear lakes enjoy good foraging conditions in the long run but might be sensitive to perturbations in clarity during chick‐rearing. Finally, chick mass was positively related to the density of docks, perhaps because angling removes large fishes and thus boosts the abundance of the small fishes on which chicks depend. Water clarity itself declined strongly from 1995 to 2021, was negatively related to July rainfall, and was positively related to July air temperature. Our findings identified both long‐term and short‐term water clarity as strong predictors of loon foraging efficiency, and suggest that climate change, through water clarity, impacts freshwater ecosystems profoundly. Over the last decades, the intensification of anthropogenic activities and associated disturbances on lake watersheds have led to major changes in lakes trophic functioning through accelerated eutrophication. In many lakes, these changes are characterized by an unprecedented increase in organic carbon fluxes, potentially leading to a shift in biogeochemical cycles and in the balance between carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions. Understanding the response of the carbon cycle to natural and anthropogenic environmental changes is becoming a crucial challenge in the context of increasing global pressures. In this study, we reconstructed the changes in the trophic functioning of the benthic and pelagic food web, in response to accelerated eutrophication in four lakes over the last millenium. Changes in carbon pathways in food webs were assessed using stable carbon isotope analysis of chitinous subfossil remains of Daphnia, Bosmina, and Chironomini archived in sedimentary records. Changes in the trophic state were inferred from sedimentary geochemical analysis, including carbon accumulation rates, Chl a accumulation rates and carbon-to-nitrogen ratios. Agro-pastoral activities were tracked by analysis of coprophilous ascospores. Results provided by this multi-proxy approach highlight recent disruptions in carbon sources and transfer pathways in lakes food webs. In particular, changes in the carbon isotopic signature of pelagic consumers suggest a recent increase in the use of 13C-depleted carbon sources such as methanogenic or respiration-derived carbon linked to recent changes in trophic state under the intensification of anthropogenic pressures. The overall impact of a crude oil spill into a pristine freshwater environment in Canada is largely unknown. To evaluate the impact on the native microbial community, a large-scale in situ model experimental spill was conducted to assess the potential role of the natural community to attenuate hydrocarbons. A small volume of conventional heavy crude oil (CHV) was introduced within contained mesocosm enclosures deployed on the shoreline of a freshwater lake. The oil was left to interact with the shoreline for 72 h and then free-floating oil was recovered using common oil spill response methods (i.e. freshwater flushing and capture on oleophilic absorptive media). Residual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations returned to near preoiling concentrations within 2 months, while the microbial community composition across the water, soil, and sediment matrices of the enclosed oligotrophic freshwater ecosystems did not shift significantly over this period. Metagenomic analysis revealed key polycyclic aromatic and alkane degradation mechanisms also did not change in their relative abundance over the monitoring period. These trends suggest that for small spills (<2 l of oil per 15 m2 of surface freshwater), physical oil recovery reduces polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations to levels tolerated by the native microbial community. Additionally, the native microbial community present in the monitored pristine freshwater ecosystem possesses the appropriate hydrocarbon degradation mechanisms without prior challenge by hydrocarbon substrates. This study corroborated trends found previously (Kharey et al. 2024) toward freshwater hydrocarbon degradation in an environmentally relevant scale and conditions on the tolerance of residual hydrocarbons in situ. With the increase in crude oil transport throughout Canada, the potential for spills into freshwater ecosystems has increased and additional research is needed in these sensitive environments. Large enclosures erected in a lake were used as mesocosms for this controlled experimental dilbit (diluted bitumen) spill under ambient environmental conditions. The microbial response to dilbit, the efficacy of standard remediation protocols on different shoreline types commonly found in Canadian freshwater lakes, including a testing of a shoreline washing agent were all evaluated. We found that the native microbial community did not undergo any significant shifts in composition after exposure to dilbit or the ensuing remediation treatments. Regardless of the treatment, sample type (soil, sediment, or water), or type of associated shoreline, the community remained relatively consistent over a 3-month monitoring period. Following this, metagenomic analysis of polycyclic aromatic and alkane hydrocarbon degradation mechanisms also showed that while many key genes identified in PAH and alkane biodegradation were present, their abundance did not change significantly over the course of the experiment. These results showed that the native microbial community present in a pristine freshwater lake has the prerequisite mechanisms for hydrocarbon degradation in place, and combined with standard remediation practices in use in Canada, has the genetic potential and resilience to potentially undertake bioremediation. This study surveyed freshwater mussels (family Unionidae) in 116 lakes and reservoirs east of the Missouri River in South Dakota, USA, during 2017. Using two-person–hour/site timed searches, evidence of a total of 1789 mussels, including 1053 live mussels, was obtained from 50 waters. Nine species, from two different orders, were found in lakes and reservoirs throughout five of the six major river drainages east of the Missouri River. The native species observed included Giant Floater Pyganodon grandis, Fatmucket Lampsilis siliquoidea, Threeridge Amblema plicata, White Heelsplitter Lasmigona complanata, Wabash Pigtoe Fusconaia flava, Deertoe Truncilla truncata, and Pink Heelsplitter Potamilus alatus. Giant Floater was the most widespread and abundant species observed, representing 63.3% of the live mussels sampled. Two non-native species, Zebra Mussel Dreissena polymorpha and Chinese Basket Clam Corbicula fluminea, were also documented from three water bodies in the lower Missouri River drainage. Overall, mussel abundance was negatively correlated with lake water conductivity and positively correlated with turbidity. Quantitative reconstructions of past continental climates are vital for understanding contemporary and past climate change. Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) are unique bacterial lipids that have been proposed as universal paleothermometers due to their correlation with temperature in modern settings. Thus, brGDGTs may serve as a crucial paleotemperature proxy for understanding past climate variations and improving regional climate projections, especially in critical but under constrained regions. That said, complications can arise in their application due to varying source contributions (e.g., soils vs. peats vs. lacustrine). As such, this study investigates brGDGT distributions in Chilean lake surface sediments and corresponding watershed soils to determine the source of brGDGTs to lake sediments. Global datasets of brGDGTs in lake sediments and soils were additionally compiled for comparison. Distinct brGDGT distributions in Chilean lakes and soils indicate minimal bias from soil inputs to the lacustrine sediments as well as in situ lacustrine production of brGDGTs, which supports the use of brGDGTs in lake sediments as reliable paleotemperature proxies in the region. The ΣIIIa/ΣIIa ratio, initially promising as a brGDGT source indicator in marine settings, shows global complexities in lacustrine settings, challenging the establishment of universal thresholds for source apportionment. That said, we show that the ratio can be successfully applied in Chilean lake surface sediments. Direct comparisons with watershed soils and further research are crucial for discerning brGDGT sources in lake sediments and improving paleotemperature reconstructions on regional and global scales moving forward. Aim: The Anthropocene is characterised by urban and agricultural landscapes. Within these landscapes, natural to semi‐natural habitats are fragmented, isolated and disturbed to varying degrees. Species associated with these natural habitats have to content with the surrounding landscape, both in terms of level of isolation, and matrix type and quality. We investigated the community structure, trait distribution and individual traits of carabid beetles in boreal forest fragments within three matrices: urban, agricultural and freshwater lake. Location: City of Lahti and its surroundings, southern Finland. Taxon: Coleoptera, Carabidae. Methods: Using pitfall traps from June to October 2019, we collected carabid beetles from eight spruce‐dominated forest fragments in the urban matrix, 10 fragments in an agricultural matrix, seven fragments on lake islands and three large control forests at the outskirts of the city. Results: Compared to natural forests, carabid beetles in forest fragments in these matrices showed distinct assemblages, and with beetle diversity the highest in fragments in the agricultural landscape. Fragments in the urban and lake island landscapes were characterised by small‐sized species, and those capable of flight. We also found strong intraspecific trait responses in terms of body size, with some generalist species being significantly smaller in urban, agricultural or lake island fragments compared to the controls. Main Conclusions: The matrix has a clear effect on carabid beetle communities, both in terms of taxonomic and trait distribution, and filters for communities of smaller sized species and those capable of flight. Such overall community and intraspecific effects can have considerable effects on populations and community assemblages: As anthropogenic effects intensify in urban and agricultural landscapes, our findings may be the expression of further morphological and physiological responses, and eventually in the adaptation of those species that can cope with the Anthropocene. This study provides step‐by‐step guidance for practitioners and local stakeholders on how to use existing study results to conduct benefit transfer (BT), and ultimately make informed predictions of how improvements in lake water clarity may benefit surrounding communities. The procedures are demonstrated using a publicly available meta‐dataset developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and a subsequent meta‐analysis that synthesizes the literature on how improvements in water clarity impact home values. The BT procedures are demonstrated using a case study of 14 large lakes in Kosciusko County, Indiana. Lake‐specific average increases in home values, as well as the value of the housing stock in aggregate, are calculated for illustrative improvements in lake water clarity. This analysis provides a critical bridge to better connect high‐quality, academic research with real‐world policy analysis, and ultimately serves to better equip local governments and stakeholders to make more informed policy and land use decisions. Arsenic can accumulate in freshwater biota, sometimes reaching potentially harmful levels. However, the toxicity of arsenic strongly depends on which arsenic species are present. Although organic species are considered less harmful than inorganic ones, they have not been extensively studied in freshwater environments, and drivers of variation in arsenic speciation among sites and taxa remain unclear. We assessed concentrations of two organic arsenic species, arsenobetaine (AsB) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), in fish and invertebrates from three lakes near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada—a region with widespread mining impacts. Both AsB and DMA were detected in most samples (n = 212), varying across a wide range of concentrations (<0.001–30.144 and <0.006–5.262 mg/kg dry wt, respectively). The lake with the most severe mining impacts typically had the highest concentrations (designated by square brackets []) of AsB and DMA. In contrast, the percentage of total arsenic made up by AsB (%AsB) and DMA (%DMA) did not vary significantly between lakes. Arsenic speciation in fish muscle varied with fish size, selenium concentrations, and trophic elevation (inferred from nitrogen stable isotope ratios δ15N), but relationships with dietary carbon source (inferred from carbon stable isotope ratios δ13C) were more varied. Within all three lake food webs, [AsB] and [DMA] typically underwent biodilution, decreasing with trophic elevation (i.e., δ15N). Although the aforementioned factors explained some variation in arsenic speciation, there remains considerable unexplained variation. Further studies on arsenic speciation in freshwater biota should target a wider diversity of taxa to better understand drivers of variation in arsenic speciation. In addition, research emphasizing the percentage of inorganic arsenic and other organic arsenic species is needed to improve environmental and human health risk assessments. Large greenhouse gas emissions occur via the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) from the surface layer of lakes. Such emissions are modeled from the air-water gas concentration gradient and the gas transfer velocity (k). The links between k and the physical properties of the gas and water have led to the development of methods to convert k between gases through Schmidt number normalization. However, recent observations have found that such normalization of apparent k estimates from field measurements can yield different results for CH4 and CO2. We estimated k for CO2 and CH4 from measurements of concentration gradients and fluxes in four contrasting lakes and found consistently higher (on an average 1.7 times) normalized apparent k values for CO2 than CH4. From these results, we infer that several gas-specific factors, including chemical and biological processes within the water surface microlayer, can influence apparent k estimates. We highlight the importance of accurately measuring relevant air-water gas concentration gradients and considering gas-specific processes when estimating k.

Ephemeral waters (EW) are sensitive and vulnerable ecosystems that, although the numerous ecosystem services provided, are poorly investigated and properly managed. Diatoms represent an important biological model largely used in aquatic permanent habitats but underused in ephemeral waters. The aim of this review is to address the knowledge gap, examining the current state of knowledge regarding the health of EW, with a focus on diatoms as bioindicators, specially (i) presenting research trends on EW ecosystem types investigated (ii) analysing the methodological approach, (iii) providing the influence of abiotic factors on the diatom assemblages in EW. A bibliographic search yielded a total of 512 papers. After removing duplicate records, 118 were eliminated. The screening of abstracts resulted in the selection of 48 articles on diatoms and EW since 1982. To avoid discrepancy between terminology we decided to classify the EW found in 3 different categories: Intermittent Running Waters (IRW: rivers, streams, creek, springs), Temporary Large Wetlands (TLW: wetlands, lakes, lagoons) and Temporary Small Waters (TSW: ponds, pools, ventaroles, ditches, thermal waters, troughs, pans). Studies are reported in all continents including Antarctic. IRW are the most investigated ecosystem (n = 683), followed by TSW (239) and TLW (96). Furthermore, studies were mainly conducted on sites located below 1000 m a.s.l. of altitude (n = 27). Studies mainly focus on epilithic diatoms (52 %). Electrical conductivity (80 %), pH (77 %) and water temperature (75 %) are the principal physical–chemical parameters considered. Moreover, electrical conductivity, pH, temperature, nitrate and nitrite resulted the best diatom community drivers. Future research is encouraged (1) to achieve a standardised protocol for monitoring EW using diatoms, (2) to focus on conservation projects for high-altitude temporary waters, and (3) to investigate the main driving forces influencing diatom diversity on EW.
