Context: Decreased trunk neuromuscular control is a risk factor for both upper- and lower-extremity injuries, yet there are few reliable and valid clinical tests to identify deficits. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and known-groups validity of a novel clinical test, the seated trunk control test (STCT). Design: Cross-sectional reliability and known-groups validity study. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: 89 unique participants: 34 were 3 months postoperative anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and 55 healthy controls. Methods: For the STCT, participants sat on a balance board with their eyes closed for three 30-second trials while investigators counted balance errors. Intraclass correlations (ICCs) were used to assess interrater reliability (N = 20) and test–retest reliability (N = 40). To assess known-groups validity, independent t tests were used to compare STCT errors at 3 months post-ACLR with healthy matched controls (N = 34/group). Area under a receiver operating characteristic curve identified an optimal cutoff for distinguishing between groups. Results: The STCT had perfect interrater reliability (ICC2,3 = 1.00) and good test–retest reliability (ICC3,3 =.79; 95% confidence interval =.61–.89). The ACLR group made significantly more errors on the STCT (mean [SD] = 15.5 [5.4]) than controls (mean [SD] = 8.2 [4.1]; P <.001, Cohen d = 1.52). The STCT's ability to distinguish between groups was excellent (area under a ROC curve = 0.86). A cutoff of 12 errors maximized sensitivity (76%) and specificity (85%). Conclusions: The STCT is reliable between raters and across days. It also has excellent ability to distinguish between individuals with a recent ACLR and healthy matched controls, which provides initial evidence to suggest that the STCT may be clinically useful for identifying deficits in trunk neuromuscular control. Recent emphasis on learning biology through scientific investigations has focused instruction on understanding and using scientific evidence. To unpack the complexities of evidentiary reasoning, here we present a novel laboratory investigation for teaching the Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) in an introductory biology laboratory course that was informed by the Conceptual Analysis of Disciplinary Evidence (CADE) framework. This HWE laboratory investigation highlights evidentiary reasoning with scaffolding questions to target reasoning with and about scientific evidence and it provides students with detailed disciplinary knowledge underpinning their investigation and evidentiary reasoning. To indicate how CADE influenced instruction on evidentiary reasoning during the investigation, changes in one instructor's laboratory discussion questions before and after implementing CADE are provided. Also, our CADE-informed HWE laboratory investigation is compared to other published activities for engaging students with HWE. Findings show that with CADE, the instructor implemented more scaffolds for directing students to consider multiple aspects of evidentiary reasoning and encouraged students' epistemic considerations about the nature, scope and quality of scientific evidence. These changes suggest that CADE can be a practical pedagogical tool to inform improvements in HWE laboratory investigations and to help instructors develop and implement scaffolds to guide students' evidentiary reasoning during a scientific investigation. We examined whether mimicking an interaction partner is universally advantageous or, provided the mimicry is particularly strong, whether it has detrimental impacts on interpersonal and negotiation outcomes. Participants interacted with a confederate who engaged in no, subtle, or strong mimicry and then negotiated. In laboratory Experiment 1 (N = 71) and Experiment 2 (N = 149), subtly (vs. not) mimicked participants liked the confederate more, while strongly (vs. subtly) mimicked participants liked and trusted less. In Experiment 2, strongly (vs. subtly) mimicked participants were less susceptible to the first-offer anchor. The online Experiment 3 (N = 180) corroborated the too-much-mimicry effect: When participants became aware of mimicry, it exerted detrimental effects on liking and trust irrespective of the experimental condition. Experiment 1 and Experiment 3 found no too-much-mimicry effect on anchoring susceptibility. Motivated by the phenomenon of Scotian Shelf Crossover events, the problem of a shelf flow that is interrupted by a strait is considered. Laboratory experiments in a rotating tank with barotropic and baroclinic flow over flat and sloping shelves confirm that the flow is steered by the bathymetric contours and mainly circumnavigates the gulf. In order to jump across the strait, as suggested by earlier theories, the flow must have unrealistically high Rossby numbers. However, the near bottom friction relaxes the bathymetric constraint and causes the formation of a peculiar jet crossing the strait diagonally. For the dissipation values such that a half of the transport goes around the gulf and half crosses the strait diagonally, the diagonal crossover jet becomes most evident. Numerical solutions for realistic values of the frictional parameter reproduce the results of the laboratory experiments and consideration of the actual Gulf of Maine bathymetry reproduces patterns similar to those observed by drift trajectories and in the satellite derived sea surface temperature fields. Laboratory studies on embryos of salmonids, such as the brown trout (Salmo trutta), have been extensively used to study environmental stress and how responses vary within and between natural populations. These studies are based on the implicit assumption that early life‐history traits are relevant for stress tolerance in the wild. Here we test this assumption by combining two data sets from studies on the same 60 families. These families had been experimentally produced from wild breeders to determine, in separate samples, (1) stress tolerances of singly kept embryos in the laboratory and (2) growth of juveniles during 6 months in the wild. We found that growth in the wild was well predicted by the larval size of their full sibs in the laboratory, especially if these siblings had been experimentally exposed to a pathogen. Exposure to the pathogen had not caused elevated mortality among the embryos but induced early hatching. The strength of this stress‐induced change of life history was a significant predictor of juvenile growth in the wild: the stronger the response in the laboratory, the slower the growth in the wild. Background: The indirect head of the rectus femoris (IHRF) tendon has been used as an autograft for segmental labral reconstruction. However, the biomechanical properties and anatomic characteristics of the IHRF, as they relate to surgical applications, have yet to be investigated. Purpose: To (1) quantitatively and qualitatively describe the anatomy of IHRF and its relationship with surrounding arthroscopically relevant landmarks; (2) detail radiographic findings pertinent to IHRF; (3) biomechanically assess segmental labral reconstruction with IHRF, including restoration of the suction seal and contact pressures in comparison with iliotibial band (ITB) reconstruction; and (4) assess potential donor-site morbidity caused by graft harvesting. Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: A cadaveric study was performed using 8 fresh-frozen human cadaveric full pelvises and 7 hemipelvises. Three-dimensional anatomic measurements were collected using a 3-dimensional coordinate digitizer. Radiographic analysis was accomplished by securing radiopaque markers of different sizes to the evaluated anatomic structures of the assigned hip.Suction seal and contact pressure testing were performed over 3 trials on 6 pelvises under 4 different testing conditions for each specimen: intact, labral tear, segmental labral reconstruction with ITB, and segmental labral reconstruction with IHRF. After IHRF tendon harvest, each full pelvis had both the intact and contralateral hip tested under tension along its anatomic direction to assess potential site morbidity, such as tendon failure or bony avulsion. Results: The centroid and posterior apex of the indirect rectus femoris attachment are respectively located 10.3 ± 2.6 mm and 21.0 ± 6.5 mm posteriorly, 2.5 ± 7.8 mm and 0.7 ± 8.0 mm superiorly, and 5.0 ± 2.8 mm and 22.2 ± 4.4 mm laterally to the 12:30 labral position. Radiographically, the mean distance of the IHRF to the following landmarks was determined as follows: anterior inferior iliac spine (8.8 ± 2.5 mm), direct head of the rectus femoris (8.0 ± 3.9 mm), 12-o'clock labral position (14.1 ± 2.8 mm), and 3-o'clock labral position (36.5 ± 4.4 mm). During suction seal testing, both the ITB and the IHRF reconstruction groups had significantly lower peak loads and lower energy to peak loads compared with both intact and tear groups (P =.01 to.02 for all comparisons). There were no significant differences between the reconstruction groups for peak loads, energy, and displacement at peak load. In 60° of flexion, there were no differences in normalized contact pressure and contact area between ITB or IHRF reconstruction groups (P >.99). There were no significant differences between intact and harvested specimen groups in donor-site morbidity testing. Conclusion: The IHRF tendon is within close anatomic proximity to arthroscopic acetabular landmarks. In the cadaveric model, harvesting of the IHRF tendon as an autograft does not lead to significant donor-site morbidity in the remaining tendon. Segmental labral reconstruction performed with the IHRF tendon exhibits similar biomechanical outcomes compared with that performed with ITB. Clinical Relevance: This study demonstrates the viability of segmental labral reconstruction with an IHRF tendon and provides a detailed anatomic description of the tendon in the context of an arthroscopic labral reconstruction. Introduction: The Thai National Guidelines for Hemostatic Laboratory Testing were established in 2018. The guidelines recommend that the 20‐min whole blood clotting time (20WBCT) method be used to diagnose/monitor snake bites. The aim of this study was to survey members of the Thailand National External Quality Assessment Scheme (NEQAS) for Blood Coagulation to investigate the use of 20WBCT testing compared between the 2021 post‐guideline and 2007 pre‐guideline periods. Methods: In July 2021, questionnaires were sent from the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University to 521 Thailand NEQAS for Blood Coagulation member laboratories to survey their WBCT practices. Current WBCT practices were compared with pre‐guideline WBCT practices, and chi‐square test (x2) was used to test for differences between groups. Results: Ninety‐seven (18.6%) of 521 surveys were returned. Seventy‐one laboratories (73.2%) reported knowing about 20WBCT from the Thai national guidelines. The reported average frequency of overall WBCT testing in 2021 was 12.4 times/month. The proportion of laboratories that reported using the 20WBCT test increased from 2.0% in 2007 to 46.4% in 2021 (p < 0.001), and the indications for performing WBCT were virtually unchanged from 2007 to 2021. The proportion of laboratories that reported having problems with WBCT testing decreased from 32.7% in 2007 to 16.5% in 2021. Conclusion: Despite our findings that almost three‐quarters of respondent laboratories reported knowing about 20WBCT testing from the WBCT guidelines, and that WBCT‐specific problems decreased significantly from 2007 to 2021, more work and training is needed to improve WBCT guideline dissemination, understanding, and adherence in Thailand. Introduction: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of the utilization for clinical reporting of the evaluation of digital images of bone marrow aspirates by morphologists and their comparability with the classic microscopic morphological evaluation. Methods: We scanned 180 consecutive bone marrow needle aspirates smears using the "Metafer4 VSlide" whole slide imaging (WSI) digital scanning system. We evaluated the statistical comparability and the risk of bias of the microscopic readings with those performed on the screen on the digitized medullary images. Results: The evaluation of cellularity on the screen was equivalent, with a higher frequency of "normal" than the analysis of digital preparations. The means and medians of the percentage values obtained on the different cell populations with the microscopic and digital reading were comparable as the main categories are concerned, with an average difference equal to 0 for the neutrophilic and eosinophilic granulocytic series, at −0.2% for the total myeloid cells, at 1.2% for the erythroid series, at −0.4% for the lymphocytes and at −0.4% for the blasts. Dysplastic features were consistently identified in 69/71 cell lineages. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that screen evaluation of digitized bone marrow needle aspirates provides quantitative and qualitative results comparable to traditional microscopic analysis of the corresponding slide smears. Digital images offer significant benefits in reducing the workload of experienced operators, reproducibility and sharing of observations, and image preservation. Background: The MC‐80 (Mindray, Shenzhen, China), a newly available artificial intelligence (AI)‐based digital morphology analyzer, is the focus of this study. We aim to compare the leukocyte differential performance of the Mindray MC‐80 with that of the Sysmex DI‐60 and the gold standard, manual microscopy. Methods: A total of 100 abnormal peripheral blood (PB) smears were compared across the MC‐80, DI‐60, and manual microscopy. Sensitivity, specificity, predictive value, and efficiency were calculated according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) EP12‐A2 guidelines. Comparisons were made using Bland–Altman analysis and Passing‐Bablok regression analysis. Additionally, within‐run imprecision was evaluated using five samples, each with varying percentages of mature leukocytes and blasts, in accordance with CLSI EP05‐A3 guidelines. Results: The within‐run coefficient of variation (%CV) of the MC‐80 for most cell classes in the five samples was lower than that of the DI‐60. Sensitivities for the MC‐80 ranged from 98.2% for nucleated red blood cells (NRBC) to 28.6% for reactive lymphocytes. The DI‐60's sensitivities varied between 100% for basophils and reactive lymphocytes, and 11.1% for metamyelocytes. Both analyzers demonstrated high specificity, negative predictive value, and efficiency, with over 90% for most cell classes. However, the DI‐60 showed relatively lower specificity for lymphocytes (73.2%) and lower efficiency for blasts and lymphocytes (80.1% and 78.6%, respectively) compared with the MC‐80. Bland–Altman analysis indicated that the absolute mean differences (%) ranged from 0.01 to 4.57 in MC‐80 versus manual differential and 0.01 to 3.39 in DI‐60 versus manual differential. After verification by technicians, both analyzers exhibited a very high correlation (r = 0.90–1.00) with the manual differential results in neutrophils, lymphocytes, and blasts. Conclusions: The Mindray MC‐80 demonstrated good performance for leukocyte differential in PB smears, notably exhibiting higher sensitivity for blasts identification than the DI‐60. The literature on laboratory objectives in engineering education research is scattered and inconsistent. Systematic literature reviews identified the need for better understanding. This paper ranks the laboratory learning objectives across the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains to improve scaffolding. It provides an opportunity for reflection, a pathway to confirm assessment alignment, and opens future research areas. To accomplish this, the Laboratory Learning Objectives Measurement (LLOM) instrument is used to survey 160 academics from around the world representing 18 engineering disciplines. The results suggest that the collective ranking order does represent a framework that can be used broadly. However, for greater alignment with consensus thinking, discipline rankings should be used. The cognitive domain was deemed the most important. These results provide the community's opinion and may not necessarily be best practice, providing an opportunity for reflection. Emotion suppression may be linked to poor health outcomes through elevated stress-related physiology. The current meta-analyses investigate the magnitude of the association between suppression and physiological responses to active psychological stress tasks administered in the laboratory. Relevant articles were identified through Medline, PsychINFO, PubMed, and ProQuest. Studies were eligible if they (a) used a sample of healthy, human subjects; (b) assessed physiology during a resting baseline and active psychological stress task; and (c) measured self-report or experimentally manipulated suppression. Twenty-four studies were identified and grouped within two separate random effects meta-analyses based on study methodology, namely, manipulated suppression (k = 12) and/or self-report (k = 14). Experimentally manipulated suppression was associated with greater physiological stress reactivity compared to controls (Hg = 0.20, 95% CI [0.08, 0.33]), primarily driven by cardiac, hemodynamic, and neuroendocrine parameters. Self-report trait suppression was not associated with overall physiological stress reactivity but was associated with greater neuroendocrine reactivity (r = 0.08, 95% CI [0.01, 0.14]). Significant moderator variables were identified (i.e., type/duration of stress task, nature of control instructions, type of physiology, and gender). This review suggests that suppression may exacerbate stress-induced physiological arousal; however, this may differ based upon the chosen methodological assessment of suppression. The addition of fibers to asphalt mixtures has the potential to improve the resistance of asphalt mixtures to cracking and permanent deformation (rutting). However, the state (distribution) of fibers in the asphalt mix is critical parameter in determining performance enhancement. This study evaluated the impact of different laboratory mixing methods (mainly Hobart and bucket) on fiber distribution and selected a method comparable to plant-produced fiber-reinforced mixes. The laboratory performance of plant-mixed lab-compacted (PMLC) and lab-mixed lab-compacted (LMLC) fiber-reinforced mixtures was compared. Four types of laboratory and plant mixtures [unreinforced, polyolefin and aramid (PFA) fibers at 0.05% dosage, and Sasobit-coated aramid (SCA) fibers at 0.01% and 0.02% dosages] were produced to compare the laboratory performance of asphalt mixtures. The cracking resistance [evaluated using indirect tensile strength (ITS) and semicircular bend (SCB) tests], rutting susceptibility [evaluated using flow number (FN) and the Hamburg wheel tracking test (HWTT)], durability (evaluated using Cantabro loss), and fatigue (evaluated using a uniaxial fatigue test) performance of control and fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures were evaluated. Among laboratory mixing methods, a bucket mixer was selected to produce LMLC samples because it produced the maximum fiber distribution (87% of fibers in the individual state). Laboratory performance testing results showed that PFA-reinforced mixtures enhanced the rutting performance regardless of mixing method. The mixtures with PFA 0.05% and SCA 0.01% fibers were highly durable and had better dynamic modulus (|E*|) at low frequency and high temperature. Cracking performance was improved with the addition of SCA fibers into the mix; however, fiber-reinforced mixes (PFA 0.05% and SCA 0.01%) had higher fatigue damage tolerance, except SCA 0.02% reinforced mix. The laboratory bucket mixing method is representative of plant-produced fiber-reinforced mixtures, and laboratory performance results were consistent for laboratory bucket and plant produced mixtures. This paper showcases laboratory mixing method equivalent to fiber distribution that produce fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures comparable to those produced at an asphalt plant. Different laboratory mixing equipment, including Hobart and bucket mixers, was used to produce fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures in the laboratory. Aramid fibers were added into these mixers after separation by hand. In addition, the same fiber-reinforced mixtures were produced at a batch plant for comparison purpose. Fibers and binder were extracted from all mixtures and individual fibers (indicating better fiber distribution) were quantified. According to the results, the use of a bucket mixer led to better fiber distribution within the produced asphalt mixtures than did a Hobart mixer. Laboratory performance comparison results showed that the mixes produced using the bucket mixer had identical results to plant-produced mixtures. Hence, using a bucket mixer and introducing aramid fibers after hand separation is an effective way to produce plant-representative fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection can have serious consequences when untreated and diagnosis is the first step in any treatment regimen. In the Unites States a 2-step algorithm consisting of HCV antibody screening and HCV RNA testing of HCV antibody-reactive specimens is recommended for detection of current HCV infection. We conducted a survey of HCV diagnostic practices in US public health laboratories and convened a meeting of HCV subject matter experts to identify opportunities for improvement in HCV diagnosis. Automatic reflexive HCV RNA testing of HCV antibody-reactive specimens was identified as a gap in laboratory practice. Only 54% of respondent laboratories always automatically reflexed or referred an anti-HCV-reactive specimen to an HCV RNA test. To facilitate diagnosis and ensure patients are not lost to follow-up, laboratories should ensure that the entire HCV testing algorithm can be completed with a sample(s) collected during a single patient visit. Low- to medium-density chalk at St Nicholas at Wade, UK, is characterised by intensive testing to inform the interpretation of axial and lateral tests on driven piles. The chalk destructures when taken to large strains, especially under dynamic loading, leading to remarkably high pore pressures beneath penetrating cone penetration testing and driven pile tips, weak putty annuli around their shafts and degraded responses in full-displacement pressure-meter tests. Laboratory tests on carefully formed specimens explore the chalk's unstable structure and markedly time- and rate-dependent mechanical behaviour. A clear hierarchy is found between profiles of peak strength with depth of Brazilian tension, drained and undrained triaxial and direct simple shear tests conducted from in situ stress conditions. Highly instrumented triaxial tests reveal the chalk's unusual effective stress paths, markedly brittle failure behaviour from small strains and the effects of consolidating to higher than in situ stresses. The chalk's mainly sub-vertical jointing and micro-fissuring lead to properties depending on specimen scale, with in situ mass stiffnesses falling significantly below high-quality laboratory measurements and vertical Young's moduli exceeding horizontal stiffnesses. While compressive strength and stiffness appear relatively insensitive to effective stress levels, consolidation to higher pressures closes micro-fissures, increases stiffness and reduces anisotropy. Rationale: The ad-libitum taste test is a widely used covert measure of motivation to consume alcohol in the laboratory. However, studies on its construct validity and potential confounding factors are scarce. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the construct validity of the ad-libitum taste test by examining the association of ad-libitum alcohol consumption with typical alcohol use and craving, and investigating potential moderation by trait anxiety, depressiveness, current mood, and drinking motives. Methods: A sample of 264 young male individuals were offered two 0.33 l glasses of beer. Participants were instructed to rate the characteristics of each drink, while the percentage of beverages containing alcohol consumed was assessed. Associations of ad-libitum consumption with typical alcohol use and craving were assessed using non-parametric and piecewise regressions. Moreover, moderator analysis with trait anxiety, depressiveness, current mood, and drinking motives was carried out. Results: Ad-libitum alcohol consumption was associated with typical alcohol use and alcohol craving. However, these associations decreased at high consumption levels. Associations between ad-libitum consumption, typical alcohol use, and craving were stable across several conditions, except that the association between ad-libitum consumption and craving increased with higher social, conformity, and coping drinking motives. Conclusions: The ad-libitum taste test appears to be a valid measure of the motivation to drink alcohol in laboratory studies in young male adults, although this validity might be compromised at high levels of ad-libitum consumption. Consideration of these factors can contribute to further refining the ad-libitum taste test as a valuable tool for assessing motivation to consume alcohol in laboratory studies. A critical examination of the literature for dental wear publications highlighted three distinct areas, clinical data, laboratory data and the simulation of the clinical situation data. The imprecision of the clinical data values from direct and indirect in vivo methods renders the clinical data compromised at best. Laboratory data showed a focus on finding a correlation between simplistic laboratory abrasive wear resistance studies and established materials science laboratory techniques, but with no actual correlation identified. Replication of the masticatory cycle in the mouth in the form of an oral wear simulator has focussed more on the wear testing devices rather than the wear quantification methods. As a result, the data acquisition variables in the x- and y-planes need to be examined to consider how they can influence the accuracy and precision of the laboratory wear measurements recorded in the dental literature. Objectives Despite the growing importance of bioinformatics in molecular diagnostics, not all medical laboratory sciences (MLS) programs provide instruction in this field. We developed and assessed a virtual laboratory learning unit to introduce basic bioinformatics concepts and tools to MLS students. Methods The unit included a video tutorial, written instructions for the online laboratory activity, and a postactivity review video. The effectiveness of the instruction was evaluated using preassessment and postassessment questions, performance of the online tasks, and a survey assessing the students' attitudes toward the learning unit. Results A prototype of the module was tested with 32 graduate and undergraduate students. Modifications were made based on the pilot test results and student feedback, and the refined version was subsequently evaluated with a different group of 20 undergraduate students. The participants responded favorably to the learning unit and successfully achieved the learning objectives, gaining familiarity with fundamental bioinformatics concepts and terminology, effectively employing basic computational tools, and developing an appreciation for the field. Conclusions Our learning unit is a promising tool for introducing MLS students to the field of bioinformatics. The impact of shading has been a prominent subject of discourse within the realm of photovoltaic (PV) energy harvesting and is recognized as a significant detriment to the system's overall efficiency. Nevertheless, prevailing investigations, which predominantly focus on the hard shading originating from building structures and vegetation, singularly address the umbra shadow phenomenon while overlooking the complexity of shadow properties and their varying intensities. In this context, this present research aims to analyze the impact of shading caused by thin objects, wherein shadow formation deviates from a singular-intensity umbra to a blend of umbra and penumbra, exhibiting diverse intensities. In the initial experimental approach, outdoor trials produced statistically significant findings, identifying both the distance and thickness of shading objects as primary determinants influencing the impact of thin object shading on the power output of PV systems. Furthermore, the analysis of the results revealed that under the specified parameters and assumptions, when considering a thin object with a thickness-to-distance ratio of 2.3 mm/225 cm, the resulting power loss of 1.65% is statistically insignificant. Remarkably, laboratory investigations unveiled a notable correlation between penumbra and power loss, contrasting with outdoor experimentation results. In Malaysia, chemical management in workplaces is managed under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994. Hence, the introduction of the Occupational Safety and Health (Use and Standards of Exposure of Chemicals Hazardous to Health) Regulations 2000 has strengthened the chemical management level in workplaces, including higher academic institutions. The introduction of chemical health risk assessment through the regulation required management to conduct the assessment at workplaces. Poor levels of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in chemical laboratories may also cause discomfort among workers when there is sick building syndrome in laboratories. IAQ is managed through the Industry Code of Practice on Indoor Air Quality 2010. Although both are different in method and approach, both are meant to ensure the workers' safety and comfort. The final, post-analytical, phase of laboratory testing is increasingly recognized as a fundamental step in maximizing quality and effectiveness of laboratory information. There is a need to close the loop of the total testing cycle by improving upon the laboratory report, and its notification to users. The harmonization of the post-analytical phase is somewhat complicated, mainly because it calls for communication that involves parties speaking different languages, including laboratorians, physicians, information technology specialists, and patients. Background: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) played a crucial role in streamlining testing and diagnosis, formulating guidelines, and devising management strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, ICMR designed and developed a comprehensive data management tool for collecting testing data in a standardized format from all laboratories across the country. The current report is a retrospective analysis of the testing data generated by the ICMR. The study's main objectives are to understand the probability of a person testing negative based on their age after an initial positive test and to assess the varied impact and duration of the disease in people of different age groups and genders. Methods: Anonymized data on the testing for COVID were analyzed. The P-to-P is the longest time interval between two consecutive positive tests for a patient without any negative test in between the positives. P-to-Plast is the time between the first positive and last positive test, as opposed to P-to-P, here we are looking at the first and last positive tests that might or might not be consecutive. P-to-N intervals is the time between the first positive and first negative test of a patient. Results: India conducted 170,914,170 tests during the study-period (until December 29, 2020). After excluding invalid test results and duplicates, there were 11,101,603 (6.5%) positive and 156,542,352 (93.5%) negative test-results performed upon 150,086,257 unique individuals. A negative-report following a positive-test was available in 12.69%. Nearly three-fourths of the cases (78.29%) belonged to the working-age group (18-60 years). The proportion of patients >50 years old has risen from 26.06 to 35.03%, with a steep rise beyond September 2020. Gender-ratio among the positives was 1.73:1 which was neutral in neonates < 7-days (age). The gender ratio was skewed in-favor-of males in the initial months with a reverse trend thereafter and with increasing age of patients. The mean P-to-P, P-to-Plast, and P-to-N durations were 12.7 + 4.3, 13.3 + 4.6, and 14.2 + 4.9 days for individuals with P-to-P duration of 1-4 weeks. The probability of testing negative was 82 & 85% at 14 & 21 days after the first-positive-test respectively with no gender bias. Conclusions: The current study has highlighted some vital aspects of COVID-19 epidemiology in India. A brief retrospective of the development of laboratory X-ray microtomography at the Shubnikov Institute of Crystallography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IC RAS) is given. The main methods and approaches that made it possible to increase the informativeness of microtomography measurements—the use of monochromatic radiation, phase-contrast method, and diffraction tomography (topo-tomography)—are reported. Objectives To determine the level and evaluate factors affecting the participation of laboratory professionals in continuous professional development (CPD) programs in eastern and southern Africa. Methods A survey was conducted among laboratory professionals from 14 countries. The CPD participation was defined as low if it was fewer than 2 CPD trainings in the past 2 years. Associations between categorical variables were tested for significance using Fisher exact test. Results Of the expected 400, 283 (70% response rate) individuals participated in the survey. Of these, 153 (54%) had low CPD participation and 199 (70%) were aware of CPD educational activities in their respective country. Those with diploma certificates attended more CPD programs (P <.001) than those with undergraduate and master's degrees. Awareness of CPD programs was associated with a higher level of CPD participation (P =.0001). Job satisfaction was significantly associated with high levels of CPD participation (P =.02). Other factors associated with high level of participation in CPD programs included affordability (P =.03), funding by employer (P =.0005), and awareness of legal CPD requirements (P =.002). Conclusions The CPD programs are considered useful to an individual's professional development, although there was low participation. Given the events of January 8, 2023, this essay intends to analyze, on the one hand, the manifestation of a global extreme right that tends to operate as a large-scale, long-lasting anti-institutional offensive force. On the other hand, there is also a global dynamic limited to liberal democracies of institutional reform that cowers in the face of radical demands, such as the end of national policing above all. Finally, the constant colonization of Brazilian politics by society's militarized operations urges us to reclaim the foundations of politics as potential for (im)possible futures through uprisings against our unbearable condition, in turn transforming the unsustainability of life into a collective venture for transformation. Although founding and directing an independent research laboratory is often expected of faculty at American universities, there are several barriers to successful completion of this important task. There is little guidance in the literature regarding exactly how to go about starting a research laboratory. The guidance that exists for faculty often focuses on running research labs in the "hard sciences," such as biomedical science and engineering, leaving social and behavioral scientists out of such considerations. Additionally, smaller or teaching-focused universities often have little infrastructure or support for starting a research lab, so faculty at these institutions may not know where to begin. These barriers are significant concerns for junior faculty, who are often unprepared for the realities and challenges of starting a successful research lab while obtaining other milestones required for promotion and tenure. We present two examples of recently-formed gerontology research laboratories begun by junior faculty, one in the psychology department of a research university and one in public health at a teaching-focused university. Our case studies present the reader with specific examples, lessons learned, and guidance for starting their own gerontology research laboratory in higher education, whether as a physical or virtual space, as well as recommendations on maintaining its functioning during a global pandemic. This paper addresses the development of an equipment to teach fundamentals of industrial process control engineering mainly for undergraduate courses at the University of Extremadura. * Context.--Human epidermal growth factor (HER2/neu) gene amplification, a poor prognostic factor in invasive breast cancer, has shown substantial utility as a predictive marker, with significantly improved survival following anti-HER2 therapies like trastuzumab. Dual-color dual in situ hybridization (D-DISH), a recently introduced fully automated assay for HER2/neu evaluation on light microscopy, has several advantages over fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Objective.--To standardize and validate the D-DISH assay using FISH as the gold standard and assess interobserver reproducibility in interpreting the D-DISH assay. Design.--D-DISH was performed using the latest HER2 Dual ISH DNA Probe Cocktail assay (Ventana Medical Systems Inc, Tucson, Arizona) in 148 cases of invasive breast cancer. The same block was used for performing immunohistochemistry by Ventana PATHWAY anti-HER2/neu (4B5) antibody and FISH assay by ZytoLight SPEC ERBB2/CEN17 Dual Color Probe. D-DISH was separately interpreted by 4 pathologists blinded to FISH results. Results.--Concordance of 98.65% and a Cohen κ value of 0.97 were observed between FISH and D-DISH. Intraclass correlation coefficient (0.93-0.97) and κ values (0.98-1.0) for interobserver reproducibility showed almost perfect agreement by D-DISH. Interobserver reproducibility was also evaluated for genomic heterogeneity, HER2 group categorization, and polysomy (κ values 0.42-0.74, 0.89-0.93, and 0.98-1.0, respectively). Conclusions.--We successfully validated the latest version of D-DISH assay as a substitute for FISH in predicting HER2 gene status with significant interobserver reproducibility, concluding that this D-DISH assay may be introduced in routine diagnostic services as a reflex test to ascertain HER2 gene status. The main objective of this intervention study was to investigate the effect of three teaching approaches, namely the traditional teaching method (TTM), a teacher-based demonstration experiment (TBDE) and a student hands-on experiment (SHE), on students' academic performance. A total number of 324 senior five students studying chemistry as one of the main subjects in their combinations were selected from four provinces and Kigali city in Rwanda. The data were collected using a chemistry achievement test comprising 30 multiple-choice questions. This test was administered before and after teaching intervention to measure the effect of the three teaching approaches on students' academic performance of solutions and titration. The Kruskal–Wallis test indicated that both SHE and TBDE had a higher mean rank after the intervention than the TTM group. The post-hoc test showed a statistically significant difference in the mean score of TTM vs. TBDE, as well as TTM vs. SHE. However, there was no significant statistical difference between the SHE vs TBDE groups. The results indicate that providing laboratory experiments through SHE or TBDE approaches significantly improved students' academic performance of solutions and titration. Chemistry teachers are advised to use laboratory experiments provided either through SHE or TBDE as an effective remedial tool that could improve students' performance in solutions and titration. Providing hands-on practical education without access to laboratories during the Covid-19 pandemic has required creativity and innovation. In this paper, co-authored by academic staff and students, we describe an at-home mobile phone-based 'spectrophotometer' experiment used in an introductory undergraduate biology course. Using colour picker apps, a smartphone can be used to quantify concentration, which was used to compare the strengths of different brands of tea. The protocol is designed to be low-cost and safe to perform outside of a laboratory. Students used the methods to learn important biochemical methods such as preparing dilutions, constructing calibration curves, normalising data and testing a hypothesis. We reflect on the experience of developing and using the protocol from a staff and student perspective, which highlights the advantages of this approach in terms of student independence and inclusivity. We also suggest alternative experiments that could be performed using the protocol. We encourage biology educators to think creatively about the possibilities for using mobile phones or at-home experiments in their teaching. The Tautenburg Solar Laboratory is a new solar observation facility to develop full-disc instrumentation for a new synoptic solar network. In the first phase, a ful-disc spectropolarimeter based on a single tunable etalon placed at the telescope aperture is developed. The development includes a container-based light feed system and optical laboratory, the instrumentation as well as calibration and data reduction pipelines. This review is devoted to a problem of the impact of low-frequency electromagnetic fields on the productivity of plant seeds. The work discusses the patterns of manifestation of a magnetobiological effect when irradiating seeds, considers the basic laws underlying magnetobiological effects, and discusses the cause-and-effect relationships between the mechanisms and parameters of the action of electromagnetic fields on plants on one hand and the composition of mineral substances and the cellular structure of seeds on the other hand. Based on an analysis of the results of laboratory tests carried out in the fields and in scientific laboratories for the presowing treatment of seeds of various grain and vegetable crops, it is shown that a strict correspondence of the mechanism and kinetics of energy impact with the energy susceptibility of a living plant organism at macromolecular and molecular levels is among the main factors determining the growth of seed germination and the subsequent development into an adult organism. The correct selection of ethanol-intoxicated patients that require ICU admission is crucial for reducing morbidity and mortality. This study included 165 patients intoxicated with ethanol, confirmed by blood analysis. The patients were divided into ICU group = 46 and inward group = 119. We created a new predictive score based on seven parameters of APACHE II score and seven laboratory parameters that were significant in ICU-admitted patients by giving each parameter one point. The new predictive score achieved a sensitivity of 87, a specificity of 93.3, and an area under the curve of 0.967 with a cutoff >6. On the other hand, blood ethanol level (BEL) exhibited a weak correlation with both APACHE II and new predictive scores and a weak correlation with the parameters of the new predictive score. The new predictive score included 14 parameters. This score can be used in predicting whether patients need ICU admission during assessment for ethanol intoxication in emergency rooms, independent of BEL analysis. Laboratory fish play an important role in many research fields, and they are also raised and bred in many laboratories around the world. While many studies have suggested suitable feeding densities for various laboratory fish, significant variations exist in the sizes of rearing tanks across different laboratories. Moreover, there is limited research on the effects of different rearing tank sizes. In this study, we set up the same rearing density (one liter of water corresponding to two fishes) and four treatments with different tank sizes (5 L, 10 L, 15 L, 20 L). We found that different sizes of rearing tanks had no significant effect on the growth and shoaling of laboratory rare minnow. However, the rare minnow in 10 L tank had lower cortisol levels, while the rare minnow in 20 L tank had higher levels of dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT) and their metabolites (DOPAC and 5-HIAA). These results show that even under the same rearing density, different sizes of rearing tanks will still have a physiological effect on the rare minnow, and the tank size suitable for laboratory fish should be considered. This study introduced a novel laboratory false confession paradigm to research on true and false confession. Participants were 91 undergraduates who were given the opportunity to cheat on a research task. All were ultimately accused of cheating. Of participants innocent of cheating, 17.9% confessed. Results suggest that the current paradigm complements existing paradigms. In addition, this paradigm has useful strengths. With appropriate modifications, it can be used to study rates of false confession among youth and allows for manipulation of paradigm-specific factors so that future research can study which of these factors lead to true confessions but minimize false confessions. Over the last fifty years, a number of higher energy X‐ray sources have been suggested as alternatives for the usual AlKα source found in the first commercial XPS systems and still the standard anode material for XPS today. This paper reviews the development of a number of such sources, predominantly in the authors' laboratory, and the rationale behind the desire to extend the binding energy range of the technique. The achromatic sources SiKα, ZrLα and TiKα are described along with monochromatic sources AgLα and CrKβ, both based on the standard quartz monochromator geometry but taking higher orders of diffraction. The driving force for much of this development was the desire to probe deeper core levels and CCC Auger transitions. These could be combined into initial or final state Auger parameters as described in much of the work cited in this review. The highest energy source considered is the CuKα source based around an external X‐ray tube, which provides much insight into the electronic structure of steels by measurement of the Fe1s and FeKLL peaks. The last decade or so has seen a significant increase of interest in HAXPES, and all manufacturers of turn‐key XPS instruments offer HAXPES options of one form or another, there are three dedicated HAXPES systems commercially available, which are very briefly described. Safety accidents frequently occur in university laboratories, making the evacuation of students from multiple exits a critical issue. In order to address this concern, we utilized the AnyLogic software to simulate a university laboratory environment. By quantifying the degree of awareness, representing safety education, safety training, and familiarity, we enhanced the expected speed within the primary social force model. Expanding on this foundation, we investigated various exit layouts and conducted experiments to develop an optimization scheme that evenly distributes exit locations and improves exit width. The objective of this approach was to resolve the problem of imbalanced utilization rates in multi-exit laboratories. The simulation results demonstrate that increased awareness not only enhances students' expected speed but also reduces evacuation time. Moreover, by implementing appropriate exit spacing and width settings, we were able to not only evenly distribute students but also alleviate congestion at exits, effectively resolving the issue of imbalanced exit utilization. The imine-exchange strategy makes single-crystal growth of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with large size (>15 microns) possible but is a time-consuming process (15 to 80 days) that has had limited success (six examples) and restricts structural characterization to synchrotron-radiation sources for x-ray diffraction studies. We developed a CF3COOH/CF3CH2NH2 protocol to harvest single-crystal COFs within 1 to 2 days with crystal sizes of up to 150 microns. The generality was exemplified by the feasible growth of 16 high-quality single-crystal COFs that were structurally determined by laboratory single-crystal x-ray diffraction with resolutions of up to 0.79 angstroms. The structures obtained included uncommon interpenetration of networks, and the details of the structural evolution of conformational isomers and host-guest interaction could be determined at the atomic level. Pedagogical approaches for supporting students' argumentative writing in science laboratories have not been fully established. This article examines the development of argumentative abilities in undergraduate students enrolled in chemistry laboratory courses that employed two teaching sequences: (i) an argumentative writing workshop for conceptual learning and (ii) weekly laboratory report writing for application of knowledge gained in the workshop. The four workshop modules guided students through the process of identifying three key components of arguments (evidence, justifications, and claims), selecting appropriate and inappropriate justifications, constructing justifications and conclusions, and analyzing experimental errors. Student performance in formulating scientific arguments was evaluated through instructors' assessment of evidence, justifications, and claims made in the Results, Discussion, and Conclusions sections, respectively, of a laboratory report. Student performance improved from 60.9 ± 3.4 to 91.5 ± 8.0 in Introductory Chemistry I Lab and 60.7 ± 5.2 to 91.7 ± 5.4 in Introductory Chemistry II Lab. Students rated the helpfulness of the writing workshop ([3.6 ± 0.1]/5.0), weekly writing ([4.1 ± 0.3]/5.0), and instructors' feedback ([4.4 ± 0.5]/5.0) for both introductory and advanced chemistry laboratories positively. There is a critical need for research examining how neural vulnerabilities associated with obesity, including lower executive control, interact with family factors to impact weight trajectories across adolescence. Utilizing a longitudinal design, the present study investigated caregivers' emotion socialization practices as a moderator of the association between preschool executive control and adolescent body mass index (BMI) trajectories. Participants were 229 youth (Mage = 5.24, SD = 0.03; 47.2% assigned female at birth; 73.8% White, 3.9% Black, 0.4% Asian American, 21.8% multiracial; 12.7% Hispanic) enrolled in a longitudinal study. At preschool-age, participants completed performance-based executive control tasks, and their caregivers reported on their typical emotion-related socialization behaviors (i.e., supportive and nonsupportive responses to children's negative emotions). Participants returned for annual laboratory visits at ages 14 through 17, during which their height and weight were measured to calculate BMI. Although neither preschool executive control nor caregiver emotion-related socialization behaviors were directly associated with BMI growth in adolescence, supportive responses moderated the association between executive control and BMI trajectories. The expected negative association between lower preschool executive control and greater BMI growth was present at below average levels of supportive responses, suggesting that external regulation afforded by supportive responses might reduce risk for adolescent overweight and obesity among children with lower internal self-regulatory resources during preschool. Findings highlight the importance of efforts to bolster executive control early in development and targeted interventions to promote effective caregiver emotion socialization (i.e., more supportive responses) for youth with lower internal self-regulatory abilities to mitigate risk for overweight and obesity and promote health across childhood and adolescence. Nonlinear curve fitting is an important process in laboratory medicine, particularly with the increased use of highly sensitive antibody-based assays. Although the process is often automated in commercially available software, it is important that clinical scientists and physicians recognize the limitations of the various approaches used and are able to select the most appropriate model. This article summarizes the key nonlinear functions and demonstrates their application to common laboratory data. Following this, a basic overview of the statistical comparison of models is presented and then a discussion of important algorithms used in nonlinear curve fitting.
