The therapeutic landscape of metastatic prostate cancer has undergone a profound revolution in recent years. In addition to the introduction of novel molecules in the clinics, the field has witnessed a tremendous development of functional imaging modalities adding new biological insights which can ultimately inform tailored treatment strategies, including local therapies. The evolution and rise of Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) have been particularly notable in patients with oligometastatic disease, where it has been demonstrated to be a safe and effective treatment strategy yielding favorable results in terms of disease control and improved oncological outcomes. The possibility of debulking all sites of disease, matched with the ambition of potentially extending this treatment paradigm to polymetastatic patients in the not-too-distant future, makes Biology-guided Radiotherapy (BgRT) an attractive paradigm which can be used in conjunction with systemic therapy in the management of patients with metastatic prostate cancer.

Finite element models built from quantitative computed tomography images rely on element-wise mapping of material properties starting from Hounsfield Units (HU), which can be converted into mineral densities upon calibration. While calibration is preferably carried out by scanning a phantom with known-density components, conducting phantom-based calibration may not always be possible. In such cases, a phantomless procedure, where the scanned subject's tissues are used as a phantom, is an interesting alternative. The aim of this study was to compare a phantom-based and a phantomless calibration method on 41 postmenopausal women. The proposed phantomless calibration utilized air, adipose, and muscle tissues, with reference equivalent mineral density values of -797, -95, and 38 mg/cm3, extracted from a previously performed phantom-based calibration. A 9-slice volume of interest (VOI) centred between the femoral head and knee rotation centres was chosen. Reference HU values for air, adipose, and muscle tissues were extracted by identifying HU distribution peaks within the VOI, and patient-specific calibration was performed using linear regression. Comparison of FE models calibrated with the two methods showed average relative differences of 1.99% for Young's modulus1.30% for tensile and 1.34% for compressive principal strains. Excellent correlations (R2 > 0.99) were identified for superficial maximum tensile and minimum compressive strains. Maximum normalised root mean square relative error (RMSRE) values settled at 4.02% for Young's modulus, 2.99% for tensile, and 3.22% for compressive principal strains, respectively. The good agreement found between the two methods supports the adoption of the proposed methodology when phantomless calibration is needed.

IntroductionThe standard of care for patients with unresectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by consolidation durvalumab as shown in the PACIFIC trial. The purpose of this study is to evaluate clinical outcomes and toxicities regarding the use of durvalumab in a real clinical scenario.MethodsA single-center retrospective study was conducted on patients with a diagnosis of unresectable stage III NSCLC who underwent radical CRT followed or not by durvalumab. Tumor response after CRT, pattern of relapse, overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), and toxicity profile were investigated.ResultsEighty-five patients met the inclusion criteria. The median age was 67 years (range 45–82 years). Fifty-two patients (61.2%) started sequential therapy with durvalumab. The main reason for excluding patients from the durvalumab treatment was the expression of PD-L1 < 1%. Only two patients presented a grade 4 or 5 pneumonitis. A median follow-up (FU) of 20 months has been reached. Forty-five patients (52.9%) had disease progression, and 21 (24.7%) had a distant progression. The addition of maintenance immunotherapy confirmed a clinical benefit in terms of OS and PFS. Two-year OS and PFS were respectively 69.4% and 54.4% in the durvalumab group and 47.9% and 24.2% in the no-durvalumab group (p = 0.015, p = 0.007).ConclusionIn this real-world study, patients treated with CRT plus durvalumab showed clinical outcomes and toxicities similar to the PACIFIC results. Maintenance immunotherapy after CRT has been shown to be safe and has increased the survival of patients in clinical practice.

The purpose of this multi-centric work was to investigate the relationship between radiomic features extracted from pre-treatment computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, and clinical outcomes for stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). One-hundred and seventeen patients who received SBRT for early-stage NSCLC were retrospectively identified from seven Italian centers. The tumor was identified on pre-treatment free-breathing CT and PET images, from which we extracted 3004 quantitative radiomic features. The primary outcome was 24-month progression-free-survival (PFS) based on cancer recurrence (local/non-local) following SBRT. A harmonization technique was proposed for CT features considering lesion and contralateral healthy lung tissues using the LASSO algorithm as a feature selector. Models with harmonized CT features (B models) demonstrated better performances compared to the ones using only original CT features (C models). A linear support vector machine (SVM) with harmonized CT and PET features (A1 model) showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.77 (0.63–0.85) for predicting the primary outcome in an external validation cohort. The addition of clinical features did not enhance the model performance. This study provided the basis for validating our novel CT data harmonization strategy, involving delta radiomics. The harmonized radiomic models demonstrated the capability to properly predict patient prognosis.

The transport and magnetic properties of the Magnéli phase tungsten oxide WO2.90, prepared via spark plasma sintering, were investigated across a broad temperature range of 4–550 K, including the previously unexplored low-temperature region below 300 K. Microstructure analysis shows that obtained pellets are fully dense, enabling reliable measurement of transport properties. Resistivity measurements reveal typical metallic behavior of WO2.90 at low temperatures. Above room temperature, resistivity tends to saturate by reaching a maximum value near 430 K. The resistivity saturation indicates that Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit is approached, where the charge carrier mean free path becomes comparable to the interatomic spacing. The temperature dependence of the resistivity can be well described by the phenomenological parallel resistor model. Significant positive magnetoresistance was observed at low temperatures, with an unusual linear dependence on the magnetic field. Despite its metallic conductivity, WO2.90 displays weak diamagnetism, likely due to the substantial core diamagnetism of tungsten and the bipolaronic pairing of charge carriers. Abstract In the past 5 years, the transfer of epitaxial oxide thin films has drawn a renewed interest in the scientific community. The major challenge in this technology is to minimize the appearance of extended bulk defects such as plastic deformations, cracks, and delamination, which are induced by the transfer process to a new host substrate. In this work, a procedure for the transfer of epitaxial oxide films where a rigid bond to the final host holder is obtained via a metallic Au/Ag bonding layer is presented. Here, the transfer of SrRuO3 (SRO) and SrRuO3/SrTiO3 (STO) epitaxial films grown on a water‐soluble Sr3Al2O6 sacrificial layer is reported. These epitaxial films are grown on a STO substrate and transferred onto a Si host substrate. Roughness values lower than 1nm are observed for the transferred SRO membranes. Cross‐section analysis shows straight interfaces without plastic deformation of the membranes. X‐ray diffraction rocking‐curve analysis evidences that mechanical damage is minimized and the membranes remain close to their initial quality. This procedure represents an important step forward in the development of advanced technologies for membrane transfer of epitaxial oxides and superstructures.

IntroductionRadiochemotherapy (RCHT) for the treatment of anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) has evolved dramatically, also thanks to intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) and 3D image guidance (3D IGRT). Despite most patients presenting fair outcomes, unmet needs still exist. Predictors of poor tumor response are lacking; acute toxicity remains challenging; and local relapse remains the main pattern of failure.Patients and methodsBetween 2010 and 2020, ASCC stages I–III treated with 3D conformal radiotherapy or IMRT and CDDP-5FU or Mytomicine-5FU CHT were identified. Image guidance accepted included 2D IGRT or 3D IGRT. The study endpoints included freedom from locoregional recurrence (FFLR), colostomy free survival (CFS), freedom from distant metastasis (FFDM), overall survival (OS), and acute and late toxicity as measured by common terminology criteria for adverse events (CTCAE) version 5.0. An exploratory analysis was performed to identify possible radiomic predictors of tumor response. Feature extraction and data analysis were performed in Python™, while other statistics were performed using SPSS® v.26.0 software (IBM®).ResultsA total of 131 patients were identified. After a median FU of 52 months, 83 patients (63.4%) were alive. A total of 35 patients (26.7%) experienced locoregional failure, while 31 patients (23.7%) relapsed with distant metastasis. Five year FFLR, CFS, DMFS and PS resulted 72.3%, 80.1%, 74.5% and 64.6%. In multivariate analysis, 2D IGRT was associated with poorer FFLR, OS, and CFS (HR 4.5, 4.1, and 5.6, respectively); 3DcRT was associated with poorer OS and CFS (HR 3.1 and 6.6, respectively). IMRT reduced severe acute gastro-intestinal (GI) and severe skin acute toxicity in comparison with 3DcRT. In the exploratory analysis, the risk of relapse depended on a combination of three parameters: Total Energy, Gray Level Size Zone Matrix’s Large Area High Gray Level Emphasis (GLSZM’s LAHGLE), and GTV volume.ConclusionsAdvances in radiotherapy have independently improved the prognosis of ASCC patients over years while decreasing acute GI and skin toxicity. IMRT and daily 3D image guidance may be considered standard of care in the management of ASCC. A combination of three pre-treatment MRI parameters such as low signal intensity (SI), high GLSZM’s LAHGLE, and GTV volume could be integrated in risk stratification to identify candidates for RT dose-escalation to be enrolled in clinical trials.

Natural disasters cause economic losses and are expected to become more frequent due to climate change. While economic consequences of natural disasters have been well-documented by research, their intangible effects have received less attention. This article studies the effect of natural disasters on attitudes toward domestic violence. The study estimates the impact of the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake in Indonesia on acceptance of wife beating using a difference-in-differences approach. Overall, findings show that the earthquake did not have a statistically significant effect on acceptance of domestic violence despite having a sizable impact on household assets and employment. This null effect masks heterogeneous effects between rural and urban residents: rural women's acceptance of domestic violence was reduced in the medium and long run, and urban men's acceptance decreased in the short run, but the decrease did not persist over time. The results are not driven by pre-existing differential trends or compositional changes. HIGHLIGHTS Natural disasters shape gender norms and impact attitudes toward domestic violence. In the case of the 2006 destructive earthquake in Indonesia, overall, women's and men's acceptance of wife beating was not affected.
