Abstract: We present three-particle mixed-harmonic correlations 〈cos⁡(mϕa+nϕb−(m+n)ϕc)〉 for harmonics m,n=1−3 for charged particles in sNN=200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. These measurements provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the initial collision zone and are important for constraining models of a subsequent low-viscosity quark–gluon plasma expansion phase. We investigate correlations between the first, second and third harmonics predicted as a consequence of fluctuations in the initial state. The dependence of the correlations on the pseudorapidity separation between particles show hints of a breaking of longitudinal invariance. We compare our results to a number of state-of-the art hydrodynamic calculations with different initial states and temperature dependent viscosities. These measurements provide important steps towards constraining the temperature dependent viscosity and longitudinal structure of the initial state at RHIC.

Abstract: Fluctuations of conserved quantities such as baryon number, charge, and strangeness are sensitive to the correlation length of the hot and dense matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and can be used to search for the QCD critical point. We report the first measurements of the moments of net-kaon multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions at sNN=7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV. The collision centrality and energy dependence of the mean (M), variance (σ2), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ) for net-kaon multiplicity distributions as well as the ratio σ2/M and the products Sσ and κσ2 are presented. Comparisons are made with Poisson and negative binomial baseline calculations as well as with UrQMD, a transport model (UrQMD) that does not include effects from the QCD critical point. Within current uncertainties, the net-kaon cumulant ratios appear to be monotonic as a function of collision energy.

Abstract: We report the direct virtual photon invariant yields in the transverse momentum ranges 16 GeV/c the production follows TAA scaling. Model calculations with contributions from thermal radiation and initial hard parton scattering are consistent within uncertainties with the direct virtual photon invariant yield.

Abstract: Azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons with direct-photon (γdir) and neutral-pion (π0) trigger particles are analyzed in central Au+Au and minimum-bias p+p collisions at sNN=200 GeV in the STAR experiment. The charged-hadron per-trigger yields at mid-rapidity from central Au+Au collisions are compared with p+p collisions to quantify the suppression in Au+Au collisions. The suppression of the away-side associated-particle yields per γdir trigger is independent of the transverse momentum of the trigger particle (pTtrig), whereas the suppression is smaller at low transverse momentum of the associated charged hadrons (pTassoc). Within uncertainty, similar levels of suppression are observed for γdir and π0 triggers as a function of zT (≡pTassoc/pTtrig). The results are compared with energy-loss-inspired theoretical model predictions. Our studies support previous conclusions that the lost energy reappears predominantly at low transverse momentum, regardless of the trigger energy.

Abstract: The STAR Collaboration presents for the first time two-dimensional di-hadron correlations with identified leading hadrons in 200 GeV central Au+Au and minimum-bias d+Au collisions to explore hadronization mechanisms in the quark gluon plasma. The enhancement of the jet-like yield for leading pions in Au+Au data with respect to the d+Au reference and the absence of such an enhancement for leading non-pions (protons and kaons) are discussed within the context of a quark recombination scenario. The correlated yield at large angles, specifically in the ridge region, is found to be significantly higher for leading non-pions than pions. The consistencies of the constituent quark scaling, azimuthal harmonic model and a mini-jet modification model description of the data are tested, providing further constraints on hadronization.

Abstract: Dihadron angular correlations in d+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity (Δη) on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth Δϕ∼0). This correlated yield as a function of Δη appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side (Δϕ∼π) yield. The Fourier coefficients of the Δϕ correlation, Vn=〈cos⁡nΔϕ〉, have a strong Δη dependence. In addition, it is found that V1 is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while V2 is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward (d-going) and backward (Au-going) directions.

Abstract: A data-driven method was applied to Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV made with the STAR detector at RHIC to isolate pseudorapidity distance Δη-dependent and Δη-independent correlations by using two- and four-particle azimuthal cumulant measurements. We identified a Δη-independent component of the correlation, which is dominated by anisotropic flow and flow fluctuations. Abstract: Dihadron correlations are analyzed in sNN=200 GeV d+Au collisions classified by forward charged particle multiplicity and zero-degree neutral energy in the Au-beam direction. It is found that the jetlike correlated yield increases with the event multiplicity. After taking into account this dependence, the non-jet contribution on the away side is minimal, leaving little room for a back-to-back ridge in these collisions.

Abstract: The inclusive J / ψ transverse momentum spectra and nuclear modification factors are reported at mid-rapidity ( | y | 1.0 ) in Au + Au collisions at s N N = 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV taken by the STAR experiment. A suppression of J / ψ production, with respect to the production in p + p scaled by the number of binary nucleon–nucleon collisions, is observed in central Au + Au collisions at these three energies. No significant energy dependence of nuclear modification factors is found within uncertainties. The measured nuclear modification factors can be described by model calculations that take into account both suppression of direct J / ψ production due to the color screening effect and J / ψ regeneration from recombination of uncorrelated charm–anticharm quark pairs.

Abstract: The STAR Collaboration presents for the first time two-dimensional di-hadron correlations with identified leading hadrons in 200 GeV central Au+Au and minimum-bias d+Au collisions to explore hadronization mechanisms in the quark gluon plasma. The enhancement of the jet-like yield for leading pions in Au + Au data with respect to the d + Au reference and the absence of such an enhancement for leading non-pions (protons and kaons) are discussed within the context of a quark recombination scenario. The correlated yield at large angles, specifically in the ridge region, is found to be significantly higher for leading non-pions than pions. The consistencies of the constituent quark scaling, azimuthal harmonic model and a mini-jet modification model description of the data are tested, providing further constraints on hadronization. Abstract: Dihadron angular correlations in d + Au collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity (Delta eta) on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth Delta phi similar to 0). This correlated yield as a function of Delta eta appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side (Delta phi similar to pi) yield. The Fourier coefficients of the Delta phi correlation, V-n = , have a strong Delta eta dependence. In addition, it is found that V-1 is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while V-2 is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward (d-going) and backward (Au-going) directions. Abstract: We report measurements of Υ meson production in p + p, d + Au, and Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector at RHIC. We compare the Υ yield to the measured cross section in p + p collisions in order to quantify any modifications of the yield in cold nuclear matter using d + Au data and in hot nuclear matter using Au+Au data separated into three centrality classes. Our p + p measurement is based on three times the statistics of our previous result. We obtain a nuclear modification factor for Upsilon (1S + 2S + 3S) in the rapidity range |y| < 1 in d + Au collisions of RdAu = 0.79 ± 0.24(stat.) ± 0.03(syst.) ± 0.10(p + p syst.). A comparison with models including shadowing and initial state parton energy loss indicates the presence of additional cold-nuclear matter suppression. Similarly, in the top 10% most-central Au + Au collisions, we measure a nuclear modification factor of R AA = 0.49 ±0.1(stat.) ±0.02(syst.) ±0.06(p + p syst.), which is a larger suppression factor than that seen in cold nuclear matter. Our results are consistent with complete suppression of excited-state Upsilon mesons in Au + Au collisions. Themore » additional suppression in Au + Au is consistent with the level expected in model calculations that include the presence of a hot, deconfined Quark–Gluon Plasma. However, understanding the suppression seen in d + Au is still needed before any definitive statements about the nature of the suppression in Au + Au can be made.« less

Abstract: Dihadron correlations are analyzed in sNN=200 GeV d+Au collisions classified by forward charged particle multiplicity and zero-degree neutral energy in the Au-beam direction. It is found that the jetlike correlated yield increases with the event multiplicity. After taking into account this dependence, the non-jet contribution on the away side is minimal, leaving little room for a back-to-back ridge in these collisions.

Abstract: We report J / ψ spectra for transverse momenta p T > 5 GeV / c at mid-rapidity in p + p and Au + Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV . The inclusive J / ψ spectrum and the extracted B-hadron feed-down are compared to models incorporating different production mechanisms. We observe significant suppression of the J / ψ yields for p T > 5 GeV / c in 0–30% central Au + Au collisions relative to the p + p yield scaled by the number of binary nucleon–nucleon collisions in Au + Au collisions. In 30–60% mid-central collisions, no such suppression is observed. The level of suppression is consistently less than that of high- p T π ± and low- p T J / ψ at RHIC and high- p T J / ψ at the LHC.

Abstract: We present first measurements of the evolution of the differential transverse momentum correlation function, C, with collision centrality in Au + Au interactions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. This observable exhibits a strong dependence on collision centrality that is qualitatively similar to that of number correlations previously reported. We use the observed longitudinal broadening of the near-side peak of C with increasing centrality to estimate the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density, eta/s, of the matter formed in central Au + Au interactions. We obtain an upper limit estimate of eta/s that suggests that the produced medium has a small viscosity per unit entropy. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The constructive need for robots to coexist with humans requires human-machine interaction. It is a challenge to operate these robots in such dynamic environments, which requires continuous decision-making and environment-attribute update in real-time. An autonomous robot guide is well suitable in places such as museums, libraries, schools, hospital, etc. This paper addresses a scenario where a robot tracks and follows a human. A neural network is utilized to learn the skin and nonskin colors. The skin-color probability map is utilized for skin classification and morphology-based preprocessing. Heuristic rule is used for face-ratio analysis and Bayesian cost analysis for label classification. A face-detection module, based on a 2D color model in the and YUV color space, is selected over the traditional skin-color model in a 3D color space. A modified continuously adaptive mean shift tracking mechanism in a 1D hue, saturation, and value color space is developed and implemented onto the mobile robot. In addition to the visual cues, the tracking process considers 16 sonar scan and tactile sensor readings from the robot to generate a robust measure of the person's distance from the robot. The robot thus decides an appropriate action, namely, to follow the human subject and perform obstacle avoidance. The proposed approach is orientation invariant under varying lighting conditions and invariant to natural transformations such as translation, rotation, and scaling. Such a multimodal solution is effective for face detection and tracking.

Abstract: In this paper a novel method of providing eye contact for multiple participants in a teleconferencing system is presented. This method proposes a simple idea to fulfill the requirement for eye contact, for two or more local and remote participants simultaneously, by using half mirrors and cameras placed at the common points of the extended lines of gaze of each participant. In contrast to the commonly available one to one eye contact of video phone systems, which also use half mirrors, the proposed system has the advantage of serving more than one person at a given location, hence named multiple person eye contact (MPEC) teleconferencing system. We observed the resultant images by using a preliminary experiment and also by building a prototype system. The results from both of these experiments proved the merits of the proposed idea. One of the main features of this system is that, it gives any participant, a feeling of "being looked at" if any remote participant is actually gazing at him. On the other hand if none of the remote participants are looking at him, then he gets the feeling of "not being looked at" which is also extremely important for effective inter personal communication. Furthermore, this system preserves the spatial continuity of neighboring participants, since all the participants at a given location are captured by each video camera. >

Abstract: In this paper we introduce a novel technique for modeling and recognizing gesture signals in 2D space. This technique is based on measuring the direction of the gradient of the movement trajectory as features of the gesture signal. Each gesture signal is represented as a time series of gradient angle values. These features are classified by applying a given classification method. In this article we compared the accuracy of a feed forward Artificial Neural Network with a Support Vector Machine using a radial kernel. The comparison was based on the recorded data of 13 gesture signals as training and testing data. The average accuracy of the ANN and SVM were 98.27% and 96.34% respectively. The false detection ratio was 3.83% for ANN and 8.45% for SVM, which suggests the ANN is more suitable for gesture signal recognition.

Abstract: We propose a novel real-time affect classification system based on features extracted from the acoustic speech signal. The proposed system analyses the speech signal and provides a real-time classification of the speaker's perceived affective state. A neural network is trained and tested using a database of 391 authentic emotional utterances from 11 speakers. Two emotions, anger and neutral, are considered. The system is designed to be speaker and text-independent and is to be deployed in a call-centre environment to assist in the handling of customer inquiries. We achieve a success rate of 80.1% accuracy in our preliminary results.

Abstract: It is a fact that human emotions are expressed in the voice as well as on the face. Early studies showed that combining these two modalities could improve the recognition accuracy. In this paper we have extensively researched the available audio and video based emotion recognition techniques as well as bimodal techniques and then combined the audio features and video features using a rule-based technique to get improved recognition results. Experiments showed that negative emotions such as anger and sadness could be recognized from each other with almost 100% accuracy by using audio features. Audio-based recognition dropped to 93.6% accuracy if the recognition of joy and surprise is included along with the angry emotion. We have observed that the proposed rule-based combined audiovisual emotion detection technique improves the recognition accuracy of all six universal emotions even if considered them together

Abstract: This paper aims to build an affect recognition system by analysing acoustic speech signals. A database of 391 authentic emotional utterances was collected from 11 speakers. Forward selection was employed to prune redundant and harmful inputs. Initial results show a classification rate of 86.1%.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a simple subband image compression scheme using wavelet decomposition. The proposed coding scheme employs a multi-level dyadic wavelet decomposition, organizes and orders the resultant wavelet coefficients using a pre-determined quadtree data structure, and finally encode symbols by arithmetic coding with a pre-designed context information. Despite the simplicity of the scheme, the experimental result shows it is competitive with the presently available schemes when compared with various types of test images.

Abstract: According to psychologists there are six types of universal facial expressions namely, "fear", "surprise", "anger", "sad", "disgust" and "happy". Holistic recognition of these facial expressions from static images requires nonlinear classifiers capable of operating on noisy high-dimensional feature spaces. Often radial basis function networks (RBFN) are used for classification in these applications. Conventional RBF networks however, in spite of their capabilities in working with high-dimensional feature spaces, often fail to deliver satisfactory performance in these scenarios due to small training sample sets, noisy features and/or features not following the required class structure. This paper presents an improved RBFN architecture that overcomes these problems through asymmetrical scaling of feature axes according to specific requirements of the class structure of the classification problem. The scaling factors are computed automatically from the available training samples, without any explicit analysis of their multivariate statistical properties. The proposed network yielded an overall recognition rate of over 92% for the 6 expression classes, and a smaller network size compared to other types of RBFN classifiers.

Abstract: Many ways have been proposed for eye tracking. These methods are either based on detecting low-level image characteristic or pattern recognition techniques. The first approach is fast yet lack of accuracy. The second approach is accurate but slow. This paper presents a novel method proposed for fast and accurate eye-tracking by a combination of the above methods. A Gaussian mixture model for skin color is built to locate the eyes approximately in a fast speed. Then, probabilistic principal component analysis (PPCA) is applied to confirm the eye location accurately. Sequential Monte Carlo sampling, an enhanced sampling technique, is integrated with the system to further enhance the speed. Experimental results show that it can perform eye tracking accurately with fast speed and robust against the different degree of deformation, orientation gaze and shape of eyes.

Results show that, the system using LFPC gives the highest accuracy, followed by the system using NFD-LFPC features. While the system using NTD-LFPC features gives the worst performance. It employs an MLP network that decides on the algorithm used for encryption. The MLP network is, in turn, dependent on the secret key. By employing a mutation algorithm comprised of cryptographically proven modular arithmetic and Feistel networks, it is hoped that such a symmetric block cipher will be resistant to modern cryptanalytic attacks, such as differential and linear attacks.

The performance of the proposed system is compared with the traditional approaches which use features of LPCC and MFCC. The comparison of each approach is performed using SUSAS (Speech Under Simulated and Actual Stress)and ESMBS (Emotional Speech of Mandarin and Burmese Speakers) databases. Abstract: Facial emotion recognition will become vitally important in future multi-cultural visual communication systems, for emotion translation between cultures, which may be considered analogous to speech translation. However so far the recognition of facial emotions is mainly addressed by computer vision researchers, based on facial display. Also detection of vocal expressions of emotions can be found in research work done by acoustic researchers. Most of these research paradigms are devoted purely to visual or purely to auditory human emotion detection. However we found that it is very interesting to consider both these auditory and visual information together, for processing, since we hope this kind of multi-modal information processing will become a datum of information processing in future multimedia era. By several intensive subjective evaluation studies we found that human beings recognise anger, happiness, surprise and dislike by their visual appearance, compared to voice only detection. When the audio track of each emotion clip is dubbed with a different type of auditory emotional expression, still anger, happiness and surprise were video dominant. However the dislike emotion gave mixed responses to different speakers. In both studies we found that sadness and fear emotions were audio dominant. As a conclusion, we propose a method of facial emotion detection by using a hybrid approach, which uses multi-modal information for facial emotion recognition.

Abstract: We describe a system that automatically detects and recognizes human head gestures such as nodding and shaking in complex background conditions using a cheap Web camera under uncontrolled conditions. The images of the head, captured at 20 frames per second, are very noisy and are of a low resolution. The invariant moments of each image captured is extracted and is fed into a recognition system that uses discrete hidden Markov models (HMMs) to classify the head gestures. The system achieves an average success rate of 87%. The system can successfully run on any low to high end PC connected to a USB Web camera without any manual initialization.

45. A universal scheme for content-based video representation and indexing

Abstract: This paper presents a universal scheme for automatic content-based video representation and indexing. Firstly, a video sequence is subdivided in time into shots each of which has similar content. These shots can be represented by key frames. Key frames provide a suitable abstraction and framework for video representation. Secondly, we could support an even wider range of video representation and indexing by segmenting and extracting smaller units (key object) within the key frame. In this paper, we also propose a novel approach of object segmentation.

Abstract: A new edge detection scheme based on radial basis function networks is proposed. It is a two-tiered scheme where, in the first stage, each pixel in the input image is classified according to its potential for being part of an edge. The second stage then combines these pixels into true edges in the input image. Both stages use radial basis function networks. The scheme illustrates how the input space of edge patterns can be used to train the neural network with a minimum number of parameters. Compared with other neural network paradigms, the proposed scheme is simpler in terms of network size and computational requirements, and provides better results even in low-contrast images.

Abstract: This paper describes the use of statistical techniques and hidden Markov models (HMM) in the recognition of emotions. The method aims to classify 6 basic emotions (anger, dislike, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise) from both facial expressions (video) and emotional speech (audio). The emotions of 2 human subjects were recorded and analyzed. The findings show that the audio and video information can be combined using a rule-based system to improve the recognition rate.

Abstract: Moment invariants are invariant under shifting, scaling and rotation. They are widely used in pattern recognition because of their discrimination power and robustness. HMM method is a natural and highly reliable way of recognition. In this paper, we have proposed a method of using moment invariants as features and HMM as recognition method in facial expression recognition. Sequences of four universal expressions, i.e. anger, disgust, happiness and surprise, are recognized. We were able to attain an accuracy as high as 96.77%.

49. Digital signatures and public key cryptosystems with multilayer perceptrons

Abstract: Popular secure public key cryptosystems such as RSA and Diffie-Hellman are based on hard problems like factorization and discrete logarithms. These systems often require large prime numbers the size of 300 decimal digits long for the systems to be secure. The generation of large prime numbers is difficult, and larger prime numbers will be required as advances in parallel computing makes factorization of large numbers faster. In this paper, algorithms for digital signatures and public key cryptosystems using multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) are proposed. The security of the algorithm is based on the difficult problem of solving non-linear simultaneous equations. Instead of needing large prime numbers, the algorithm requires multiple real numbers that can be easily generated.

Abstract: In this paper, the design and development of a web based text-to-sign language translator, Sign Animator, is discussed. To represent signs accurately, the system uses rotational angles to specify arm location and hand shapes, and uses interpolation between two arm locations to generate the movements within the signs. Some form of collision detection and limits on rotational angles is used to prevent awkward positioning of the humanoid. This paper will present a feasibility study and describe the development of the prototype text-to-sign translation system.
