Abstract

A pilot field campaign was conducted in the fall and winter of 2017 in northern Colorado to test the deployment of the Aerosol Mass and Optical Depth (AMOD) instrument as part of the Citizen-Enabled Aerosol Measurements for Satellites (CEAMS) network. Citizen scientists were recruited to set up the device to take filter and optical measurements of aerosols in their backyards. The goal of the network is to provide more surface particulate matter and aerosol optical depth (AOD) measurements to increase the spatial and temporal resolution of ratios of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) to AOD and to improve satellite-based estimates of air quality. Participants collected 65 filters and 160 multi-wavelength AOD measurements, from which 109 successful PM2.5 : AOD ratios were calculated. We show that PM2.5, AOD, and their ratio (PM2.5 : AOD) often vary substantially over relatively short spatial scales; this spatial variation is not typically resolved by satellite- and model-based PM2.5 exposure estimates. The success of the pilot campaign suggests that citizen-science networks are a viable means for providing new insight into surface air quality. We also discuss lessons learned and AMOD design modifications, which will be used in future wider deployments of the CEAMS network.

Background: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD–Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the relations among negative emotional reactions (reduced affective organisational commitment and higher job-related stress), and behavioural reactions to job insecurity (coping behaviour). A non-experimental correlation research design was used and the participants were a convenience sample of employees working for a private hospital in Gauteng, South Africa (N = 242). The measuring instruments included the Job Insecurity Inventory, the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire, the Experience of Work and Life Circumstances Questionnaire, and the COPE Questionnaire. The results showed that job insecurity was associated with job-related stress. Affective job insecurity was associated with detachment from the organisation, while cognitive job insecurity was associated with low identification with the organisation. Experiences of affective job insecurity, job-related stress, and low organisational commitment were associated with the use of avoidance coping strategies. Employees who experienced cognitive job insecurity (compared to those who experienced lower cognitive job insecurity) were less inclined to apply active coping strategies, even if their job-related stress was low.

Abstract

The effect on muscle length of positioning with ice application to acute hamstring injuries in rugby players was examined. Ice was applied with the hamstring muscle group in either the lengthened or the shortened position. Players with grade I or II hamstring injuries were randomly allocated (via the randomized block method) to the different treatment methods. The active hamstring length of the injured leg was measured by means of knee extension before and after treatment on days 1, 2 and 3 post-injury. The uninjured leg was measured on days 1 and 3. The discussion of results covered only the clinical observations since the experimental group was too small for statistical analysis.

Abstract

Objective The objective of this scoping review was to identify the available evidence on antimicrobial stewardship programs for teaching medical students about rational antimicrobial use, including the content taught and the method of instruction used. Introduction Antibiotics are a precious resource whose discovery have saved millions of lives. They are used extensively in surgical procedures, cancer chemotherapy, and in the treatment of infectious diseases. However, the development of antimicrobial resistance and the slow rate of discovery of new agents with novel mechanisms of actions represent a huge threat to modern medicine. Inclusion criteria This scoping review considered papers that described medical school curricula that focused on the teaching and learning of the prescription of antimicrobial medication. Studies that described this concept in the curricula of other health profession students, such as nursing, pharmacy, or dentistry students, were excluded. Only studies published in English from 1996 onwards were included. Methods Eight databases were searched for both published and unpublished literature and gray literature. The JBI three-step process was followed and conducted by two reviewers. The scoping review followed an a priori published protocol. Full texts of selected citations were assessed against the inclusion criteria by two independent reviewers. Data were independently extracted by two reviewers. Disagreements were resolved through discussion, and the need for a third reviewer was not required. Data extraction was undertaken using a modified charting table developed for the review objectives. The findings are presented using the narrative synthesis. Results Thirteen studies were included in the review, with most of the papers originating from the United States of America and Europe; with one from developing countries. Didactic lectures and web-based distance learning were the most common modes of instruction used in the included papers. Six of the included papers presented the outcomes of their interventions; where different methods of assessment were used to evaluate students, that included baseline and post-instruction assessment or a series of short exams. Some of the concepts included in the teaching material included the use of antimicrobial agents, the prevention of antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention control. The programs (ranging from 75 minutes to 100 hours) were implemented from second to fourth year of study. Conclusions A wide range of interventions were used to teach the principles of antimicrobial stewardship to medical students. There is a need to further evaluate these programs through follow-up of students after graduation to determine whether the skills learned are retained.

Abstract

Language Models such as BERT have grown in popularity due to their ability to be pre-trained and perform robustly on a wide range of Natural Language Processing tasks. Often seen as an evolution over traditional word embedding techniques, they can produce semantic representations of text, useful for tasks such as semantic similarity. However, state-of-the-art models often have high computational requirements and lack global context or domain knowledge which is required for complete language understanding. To address these limitations, we investigate the benefits of knowledge incorporation into the fine-tuning stages of BERT. An existing K-BERT model, which enriches sentences with triplets from a Knowledge Graph, is adapted for the English language and extended to inject contextually relevant information into sentences. As a side-effect, changes made to K-BERT for accommodating the English language also extend to other word-based languages. Experiments conducted indicate that injected knowledge introduces noise. We see statistically significant improvements for knowledge-driven tasks when this noise is minimised. We show evidence that, given the appropriate task, modest injection with relevant, high-quality knowledge is most performant., Submitted to ISCMI 2022

Abstract

Anopheles gambiae, An. coluzzii, An. arabiensis, and An. funestus are major vectors in high malaria endemic African regions. Various terpenoid classes form the main chemical constituent repository of essential oils, many of which have been shown to possess insecticidal effects against Anopheles species. The current study aimed to assess the bioactivity of terpenoids including four sesquiterpene alcohols, farnesol, (-)-α-bisabolol, cis-nerolidol, and trans-nerolidol; a phenylpropanoid, methyleugenol, and a monoterpene, (R)-(+)-limonene, using the larvicidal screening assay against the four Anopheles species. The mechanism of action was investigated through in vitro acetylcholinesterase inhibition assay and in silico molecular modelling. All six terpenoids showed potent larvicidal activity against the four Anopheles species. Insights into the mechanism of action revealed that the six terpenoids are strong AChE inhibitors against An. funestus and An. arabiensis, while there was a moderate inhibitory activity against An. gambiae AChE, but very weak activity against An. coluzzii. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant disruptions to ordinary lives. These disruptions included restricting human movement through local “lockdowns.” This article applies a multitemporal analysis of differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar to evaluate the relationship between restrictions on movement and solid waste production in landfill sites. We selected three landfill sites from Africa, Euro-Asia, and America to assess the impact of restricted mobility on waste production. Our research shows that solid waste production and restrictions on human mobility are significantly correlated. This article indicates that a reduction in human mobility increases human waste production even after accounting for changes in economic activities. The research highlights the benefit of using remote sensing SAR data for monitoring the impact of human activities on the environment. The use of remote sensing data is crucial for these applications, given that the outcomes might be counter-intuitive. The source code for the workflows, Jupyter notebooks and scripts are available at https://github.com/tvanzyl/sar_jhb_dumps to support reproducible research in remote sensing.

Abstract

Catastrophic forgetting in neural networks during incremental learning remains a challenging problem. Previous research investigated catastrophic forgetting in fully connected networks, with some earlier work exploring activation functions and learning algorithms. Applications of neural networks have been extended to include similarity learning. Understanding how similarity learning loss functions would be affected by catastrophic forgetting is of significant interest. Our research investigates catastrophic forgetting for four well-known similarity-based loss functions during incremental class learning. The loss functions are Angular, Contrastive, Center, and Triplet loss. Our results show that the catastrophic forgetting rate differs across loss functions on multiple datasets. The Angular loss was least affected, followed by Contrastive, Triplet loss, and Center loss with good mining techniques. We implemented three existing incremental learning techniques, iCaRL, EWC, and EBLL. We further proposed a novel technique using Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) to generate representation as exemplars passed through the network’s intermediate layers. Our method outperformed three existing state-of-the-art techniques. We show that one does not require stored images (exemplars) for incremental learning with similarity learning. The generated representations from VAEs help preserve regions of the embedding space used by prior knowledge so that new knowledge does not “overwrite” it.

Abstract

Similarity learning using deep convolutional neural networks has been applied extensively in solving computer vision problems. This attraction is supported by its success in one-shot and zero-shot classification applications. The advances in similarity learning are essential for smaller datasets or datasets in which few class labels exist per class such as wildlife re-identification. Improving the performance of similarity learning models comes with developing new sampling techniques and designing loss functions better suited to training similarity in neural networks. However, the impact of these advances is tested on larger datasets, with limited attention given to smaller imbalanced datasets such as those found in unique wildlife re-identification. To this end, we test the advances in loss functions for similarity learning on several animal re-identification tasks. We add two new public datasets, Nyala and Lions, to the challenge of animal re-identification. Our results are state of the art on all public datasets tested except Pandas. The achieved Top-1 Recall is 94.8% on the Zebra dataset, 72.3% on the Nyala dataset, 79.7% on the Chimps dataset and, on the Tiger dataset, it is 88.9%. For the Lion dataset, we set a new benchmark at 94.8%. We find that the best performing loss function across all datasets is generally the triplet loss, however, there is only a marginal improvement compared to the performance achieved by Proxy-NCA models. We demonstrate that no single neural network architecture combined with a loss function is best suited for all datasets, although VGG-11 may be the most robust first choice. Our results highlight the need for broader experimentation and exploration of loss functions and neural network architecture for the more challenging task, over classical benchmarks, of wildlife re-identification.
