Abstract: In Fig. 5 on p. 311 of our Phys. Lett. B 740 (2015) 303 an adjustment by 180∘ is required for the phases with respect to the L=2,M=1 wave, of the following waves: L=1,3,5 with M=1, and L=2 with M=2. After this correction (Fig. 5 (corrected) below), the extracted partial waves describe the angular distribution of the η(′) in the Gottfried-Jackson (GJ) frame, using Eq. (4) with implicit Condon-Shortley phase convention. The other results of our paper are not affected. The right-handed GJ coordinate system was defined by the z-axis pointing in the direction of the beam in the η(′)π− center-of-mass system and the y-axis pointing in the direction of precoilGJ×pbeamGJ.

Abstract: Measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of high energy muons off transversely polarised protons are presented. The results were obtained using all the available COMPASS proton data, which were taken in the years 2007 and 2010. The Collins asymmetries exhibit in the valence region a non-zero signal for pions and there are hints of non-zero signal also for kaons. The Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive for positive pions and kaons and compatible with zero otherwise.

Abstract: A search for the exclusive production of the Zc±(3900) hadron by virtual photons has been performed in the channel Zc±(3900)→J/ψπ±. The data cover the range from 7 GeV to 19 GeV in the centre-of-mass energy of the photon–nucleon system. The full set of the COMPASS data set collected with a muon beam between 2002 and 2011 has been used. An upper limit for the ratio BR(Zc±(3900)→J/ψπ±)×σγN→Zc±(3900)N/σγN→J/ψN of 3.7×10−3 has been established at the confidence level of 90%. Keywords: COMPASS, Zc(3900), Photoproduction, Tetraquark

Abstract: Exclusive production of ηπ− and η′π− has been studied with a 191 GeV/c π− beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum (L) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to 3 GeV/c2. A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the L=2,4,6 intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances a2(1320) and a4(2040) are in line with this similarity. In contrast, a strong enhancement of η′π− over ηπ− is found for the L=1,3,5 waves, which carry non-qq¯ quantum numbers. The L=1 intensity peaks at 1.7 GeV/c2 in η′π− and at 1.4 GeV/c2 in ηπ−, the corresponding phase motions with respect to L=2 are different.

Abstract: A measurement of the azimuthal asymmetry in dihadron production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised proton (NH3) targets is presented. They provide independent access to the transversity distribution functions through the measurement of the Collins asymmetry in single hadron production. The data were taken in the year 2010 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a 160 GeV/c muon beam of the CERN SPS, increasing by a factor of about four the overall statistics with respect to the previously published data taken in the year 2007. The measured sizeable asymmetry is in good agreement with the published data. An approximate equality of the Collins asymmetry and the dihadron asymmetry is observed, suggesting a common physical mechanism in the underlying fragmentation.

Abstract: Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS longitudinally polarised muon beam at 160 GeV/c and a 6LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations cos⁡ϕh, cos⁡2ϕh and sin⁡ϕh were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables x, z or pTh and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the cos⁡ϕh and cos⁡2ϕh modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons.

Abstract: Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons ω and ϕ is measured with a 190 GeV/c proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable xF of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on xF and on the invariant mass MpV of the system formed by fast proton pfast and vector meson V is discussed in terms of diffractive production of pfastV resonances in competition with central production. The measurement of the spin density matrix element ρ00 of the vector mesons in different selected reference frames provides another handle to distinguish the contributions of these two major reaction types. Again, dependences of the alignment on xF and on MpV are found. Most of the observations can be traced back to the existence of several excited baryon states contributing to ω production which are absent in the case of the ϕ meson. Removing the low-mass MpV resonant region, the OZI rule is found to be violated by a factor of eight, independently of xF.

Abstract: Heart failure is associated with induction of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and the unfolded protein response (UPR). The serine/threonine protein kinase/endoribonuclease IRE1α is a key protein in ER stress signal transduction. IRE1α activity can induce both protective UPR and apoptotic downstream signaling events, but the specific role for IRE1α activity in the heart is unknown. A major aim of this study was to characterize the specific contribution of IRE1α in cardiac physiology and pathogenesis. We used both cultured myocytes and a transgenic mouse line with inducible and cardiomyocyte-specific IRE1α overexpression as experimental models to achieve targeted IRE1α activation. IRE1α expression induced a potent but transient ER stress response in cardiomyocytes and did not cause significant effects in the intact heart under normal physiological conditions. Furthermore, the IRE1α-activated transgenic heart responding to pressure overload exhibited preserved function and reduced fibrotic area, associated with increased adaptive UPR signaling and with blunted inflammatory and pathological gene expression. Therefore, we conclude that IRE1α induces transient ER stress signaling and confers a protective effect against pressure overload-induced pathological remodeling in the heart. To our knowledge, this report provides first direct evidence of a specific and protective role for IRE1α in the heart and reveals an interaction between ER stress signaling and inflammatory regulation in the pathologically stressed heart.

Abstract: The craft beer industry is of increased interest to academics and geographers are beginning to not only chart a “geography of beer”; but also the local economic development implications of the industry. Indeed, we posit that the growth of the craft beer industry resides at the nexus between nature, place, and identity—or what we consider an applied geography of growth that is necessarily informed by sustainability and the closely allied geographic concepts of human-environment interactions and place. Further, we examine the branding of nature and place as co-determined spatial mechanisms for market differentiation and economic growth including neo-localism. Specifically, we examine real world examples of authentic branding initiatives that extend from dynamic place-based human-environment interactions that promote the overall sustainability of communities and the craft beer industry. In doing so, we propose an economic development framework based in an applied geography organized around the concepts of place, region, and sustainability. The framework can be used in a variety of economic development contexts and across multiple industries.

Abstract: Moral emotion researchers have suggested that violations of different moral values may differentially elicit state contempt, anger, and disgust. However, research investigating trait emotions and their associations with moral values has largely focused on trait disgust; in this context, few studies have examined trait anger, and none have examined trait contempt. Across two studies, we examined trait contempt, anger, and disgust and their associations with six moral values: harm/care, fairness, loyalty, authority, purity, and reciprocity/equity. Participants completed trait contempt, anger, and disgust instruments and a measure of moral values. Multiple regressions were used to examine the unique associations between trait emotions and endorsement of each moral value. Across the two studies, trait contempt was negatively associated with multiple moral values (consistently with harm/care and loyalty), whereas trait disgust was positively associated with multiple moral values (consistently with harm/care and reciprocity/equity). Trait anger was weakly associated with harm/care and fairness values in Study 2, but not Study 1. Our results highlight an important new link between a contemptuous personality and diminished moral values, and suggest that trait disgust is strongly associated with moral values outside the purity domain.

Abstract: Prior research suggests that conservatives are more fear-motivated, disgust-sensitive, and happy than liberals. Yet when it comes to political targets (e.g., politicians), both liberals and conservatives can get very emotional. We examined whether the ideological differences in emotion seen in past research apply to emotions towards specific ideologically similar vs. dissimilar targets, or whether these emotions are instead equivalent between liberals and conservatives. Across two studies, liberals and conservatives rated their anger, contempt, disgust, fear, and happiness towards Democratic and Republican congresspersons. We compared participants’ levels of each emotion towards their respective ideologically dissimilar and ideologically similar congresspersons. Liberals and conservatives both experienced stronger negative emotions towards ideologically dissimilar congresspersons than they did towards ideologically similar ones. Neither liberals nor conservatives differed in negative emotions towards politicians overall (i.e., on average). However, there were ideological differences in emotional bias. In Study 1, liberals exhibited a greater contempt bias (i.e., a larger gap in contempt ratings between ideologically similar and ideologically dissimilar politicians) than conservatives did. In Study 2, liberals exhibited greater contempt, anger, disgust, and happiness biases than conservatives did. The need to consider context in the study of ideological differences in emotion is discussed.

Abstract: A search for the exclusive production of the Z(c)(+/-)(3900) hadron by virtual photons has been performed in the channel Z(c)(+/-)(3900). J/Psi pi(+/-). The data cover the range from 7GeV to 19GeV in the centre-of- mass energy of the photon-nucleon system. The full set of the COMPASS data set collected with a muon beam between 2002 and 2011 has been used. An upper limit for the ratio BR(Z(c)(+/-)(3900)-> J/Psi pi(+/-)) x sigma(gamma N) -> Z(c)(+/-)(3900) N/sigma gamma N -> J/Psi N 3.7 x10(-3) has been established at the confidence level of90%. Abstract: We are developing large size THick GEM (THGEM)-based detectors of single photons, mainly meant for Cherenkov imaging applications. The R&D programme includes the complete characterisation of the THGEM electron multipliers, the study of the aspects related to the detection of single photons and the engineering towards large size detector prototypes. Our most recent achievements include dedicated studies concerning the ion backflow to the photocathode; relevant progress in the engineering aspects, in particularly related to the production of large-size THGEMs, where the strict correlation between the local gain-value and the local thickness-value has been demonstrated and a 300×300 mm2 active area detector has been successfully operated at the CERN PS T10 test beam; the introduction of a new hybrid detector architecture, offering promising performance, which is formed by a THGEM layer which acts both as photocathode and pre-amplification device, followed by a MICROMEGAS (MM) multiplication stage. We report about the general status of the R&D programme and, in detail, about the recent progress.

Abstract: The novel and robust Thick GEM (THGEM) electron multiplier, coupled to a solid state photon converter, represents a promising option for instrumenting, at affordable costs, large areas with photon detectors, in particular, in Cherenkov imaging counters where single photons must be detected with high efficiency. The main goal of our project is to demonstrate the feasibility of reliable gaseous detector of single photons based on the use of THGEM multipliers, able to stably operate at high gain and high rate and to build and validate a large size prototype of such a detector. The project status and perspectives are reported; in particular attention is dedicated to the simulation and laboratory studies performed to understand the photo-electron extraction performance attainable using a solid state coated photo-cathode film onto a THGEM substrate.

Abstract: The first DIMACS special year, held during 1989–1990, was devoted to discrete and computational geometry. The workshops addressed the following topics: geometric complexity, probabilistic methods in discrete and computational geometry, polytopes and convex sets, arrangements, and algebraic and practical issues in geometric computation. This volume presents results of the workshops and the special year activities. Containing both survey articles and research papers, this collection presents an excellent overview of discrete and computational geometry. The diversity of these papers demonstrate how geometry continues to provide a vital source of ideas in theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics as well as fertile ground for interaction and stimulation between the two disciplines.

Abstract: International audience; New photon detectors, based on the use of multi-anode photo-multiplier tubes coupled to individual lens telescopes and read out with a dedicated read-out electronics system, equip the central region of the Cherenkov imaging counter RICH-1 of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS. They are characterised by high photon yield, fast response and high rate capability and are successfully in operation since the 2006 COMPASS data taking. The photon detection system fully matches the expected performance. The design and construction of the photon detectors are described in detail.

Abstract: A Set of new MPGD-based Photon Detectors is being built for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. The detectors cover a total active area of 1.4 m$^2$ and are based on a hybrid architecture consisting of two THGEM layers and a Micromegas. A CsI film on one THGEM acts as a reflective photocathode. Abstract: COMPASS is a fixed target experiment at CERN SPS aimed to study Hadron Structure and Spectroscopy. Hadron Identification in the momentum range between 3 and 55 GeV/c is provided by a large gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter (RICH-1). To cope with the challenges imposed by the new physics program of COMPASS, RICH-1 have been upgraded by replacing four MWPCs based photon detectors with newly developed MPGD based photon detectors. The architecture of the novel detectors is a hybrid combination of two layers of THGEMs and a MicroMegas. The top of the first THGEM is coated with CsI acting as a reflective photo-cathode. The anode is segmented in pads capacitively coupled to the APV-25 based readout. The new hybrid detectors have been commissioned during 2016 COMPASS data taking and stably operated during 2017 run. Abstract: COMPASS has studied exclusive production of ρ 0 mesons using a 160 GeV/ c muon beam and a transversely polarised NH 3 target. Five single-spin and three double-spin azimuthal aymmetries were measured in dependence on Q 2 , x Bj , or p T 2 . Except the sin ϕ S asymmetry, obtained to be − 0.019 ± 0.008( stat .) ± 0.003( syst .), all others were found to be consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties. Phenomenological GPD-based model calculations agree well with the data and interpret the result as evidence for the existence of chiral-odd, transverse generalised parton distributions.

Abstract: Exclusive production of ηπ− and η π− has been studied with a 191 GeV/c π− beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum (L) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to 3 GeV/c2. A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the L = 2, 4, 6 intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances a2(1320) and a4(2040) are in line with this similarity. In contrast, a strong enhancement of η π− over ηπ− is found for the L = 1, 3, 5 waves, which carry non-q¯q quantum numbers. The L = 1 intensity peaks at 1.7 GeV/c2 in η π− and at 1.4 GeV/c2 in ηπ−, the corresponding phase motions with respect to L =2 are different.

Abstract: Although it is known by different names, the qualitative–quantitative divide is a common enough description for battles between the general and the unique in the social sciences. Whatever value such an academic discussion might have for the pursuit of theory, the goal of applied social science is different. It is, more generally, to solve particular human problems, not to produce universal or law-like understanding. Insofar as applied geography endeavors to link general processes to specific cases, qualitative approaches are uniquely positioned to make meaning in place, impact policy, and transform everyday life. In this article, we discuss three areas in which qualitative methods connect the spectrum of applied geospatial research: Creation, Confirmation, and Connectivity. We show how the union of qualitative methods and a focus on the specific with different geospatial technologies has led to innovative and exciting ways of understanding and visualizing the multifaceted relationships between spatial phenomena. Indeed, through the thoughtful use of qualitative methods, applied geographers can truly begin to understand the complex interactions occurring all around us between society, environment, and place.

Abstract: A random polygon is the convex hull of uniformly distributed random points in a convex body K ? R 2 . General upper bounds are established for the variance of the area of a random polygon and also for the variance of its number of vertices. The upper bounds have the same order of magnitude as the known lower bounds on variance for these functionals. The results imply a strong law of large numbers for the area and number of vertices of random polygons for all planar convex bodies. Similar results had been known, but only in the special cases when K is a polygon or where K is a smooth convex body. The careful, technical arguments we needed may lead to tools for analogous extensions to general convex bodies in higher dimension. On the other hand one of the main results is a stronger version in dimension d = 2 of the economic cap covering theorem of Barany and Larman. It is crucial to our proof, but it does not extend to higher dimension.

Abstract: The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) in hard exclusive production of rho(0) mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E-q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q(2), x-B-j and p(T)(2) dependence of A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) is presented in a wide kinematic range: 1 (GeV/c)(2) < Q(2) < 10 (GeV/c)(2), 0.003 < xB(j) < 0.3 and 0.05 (GeV/c)(2) < p(T)(2) < 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) for protons or 0.10 (GeV/c)(2) < p(T)(2) < 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) for deuterons. Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E-u and E-d approximately cancel. Abstract: First paragraphs: Over the past decade, we, as a research team, have explicitly investigated the intersection between small family farms, economics, development, and culture in northwest Ohio (Gatrell, Reid, & Ross, 2011; Gatrell, Reid, Steiger, Smith, & Carroll, 2009; Gatrell, Thakur, Reid, & Smith, 2010; LaFary, Gatrell, Reid, & Lindquist, 2006; Reid, Gatrell, & Ross, 2012; Reid, Smith, Gatrell, & Carroll, 2009; Reid, Smith, Haase, Ross, Mirozoyants, & Gatrell, 2009). As such, our primary interest has been in describing and understanding the socio-spatial and cultural context of small family farms and their production practices, as well as business practices as observed in the study area with the assistance of congressionally directed spending. To that end, Cultivating Narratives: Cultivating Successors (Steiger, Eckert, Reid, & Ross, 2012) focused on the practices and decision making of farms (to be read as firms) and the empirically observed realities of northwest Ohio farmers, and articulated the overall positionality of the research relative to the cultural and political significance of the family farm....

Abstract: We report about the development status of large area gaseous single photon detectors based on a novel hybrid concept for RICH applications. The hybrid concept combines Thick Gaseous Electron Multipliers (THGEMs) coupled to CsI, working as a photon sensitive pre-amplification stage, and Micromegas, as a multiplication stage. The most recent achievements within the research and development programme consist in the assembly and study of View the MathML source hybrid photon detectors, the optimization of front-end electronics, and engineering towards large area detectors. Hybrid detectors with an active area of View the MathML source have been successfully operated in laboratory conditions and at a CERN PS T10 test beam, achieving effective gains in the order of 105 and good time resolution (View the MathML source); APV25 front-end chips have been coupled to the detector resulting in noise levels lower than 1000 electrons; the production and characterization of View the MathML source THGEMs is ongoing. A set of hybrid detectors with View the MathML source active area is envisaged to upgrade COMPASS RICH-1 at CERN in 2016.

Abstract: This paper analyzes oral histories of eight northwest Ohio farms on the theme of farm succession. We report several significant findings: a process of succession that is less orderly than some recent studies suggest; that farmers hope for, even expect succession but do not plan for it; the importance of wives to the adaptation and diversification of on-farm operations; and that contrary to some claims, the “farmer’s boy”–type successors can innovate and adapt, suggesting the future of family farms may be in sounder hands than some believe.

Abstract: Barany, Hubard, and Jeronimo recently showed that for given well-separated convex bodies S 1,…,S d in R d and constants β i ∈[0,1], there exists a unique hyperplane h with the property that Vol (h +∩S i )=β i ⋅Vol (S i ); h + is the closed positive transversal halfspace of h, and h is a “generalized ham-sandwich cut.” We give a discrete analogue for a set S of n points in R d which are partitioned into a family S=P 1∪⋅⋅⋅∪P d of well-separated sets and are in weak general position. The combinatorial proof inspires an O(n(log n)d−3) algorithm which, given positive integers a i ≤|P i |, finds the unique hyperplane h incident with a point in each P i and having |h +∩P i |=a i . Finally we show two other consequences of the direct combinatorial proof: the first is a stronger result, namely that in the discrete case, the conditions assuring existence and uniqueness of generalized cuts are also necessary; the second is an alternative and simpler proof of the theorem in Barany et al., and in addition, we strengthen the result via a partial converse.

Abstract: This paper examines the status of the floriculture industry in northwest Ohio, barriers facing firms in this transitioning sector, and strategies to promote industry competitiveness. Specifically, the paper focuses on the business practices of firms and efforts by local policymakers, academics, and business leaders to alter the regional dynamics of the industry vis-a-vis a grassroots “cluster” initiative. Using survey and focus group data, the paper demonstrates that culture, tradition, and shared values are key barriers to change and suggests that local cluster initiatives—like the Maumee Valley Growers—are an effective strategy for overcoming these barriers. From an applied perspective, the paper demonstrates the importance of contextualizing applied geographic research and the potential for geographers to chart, inform, and shape the internal geographies, practices, and trajectories of local actors and industry.
