1. Daedalus Ionospheric Profile Continuation (DIPCont): Monte Carlo studies assessing the quality of in situ measurement extrapolation

Abstract

In situ satellite exploration of the lower thermosphere–ionosphere system (LTI) as anticipated in the recent Daedalus mission proposal to ESA will be essential to advance the understanding of the interface between the Earth's atmosphere and its space environment. To address physical processes also below perigee, in situ measurements are to be extrapolated using models of the LTI. Motivated by the need for assessing how cost-critical mission elements such as perigee and apogee distances as well as the number of spacecraft affect the accuracy of scientific inference in the LTI, the Daedalus Ionospheric Profile Continuation (DIPCont) project is concerned with the attainable quality of in situ measurement extrapolation for different mission parameters and configurations. This report introduces the methodological framework of the DIPCont approach. Once an LTI model is chosen, ensembles of model parameters are created by means of Monte Carlo simulations using synthetic measurements based on model predictions and relative uncertainties as specified in the Daedalus Report for Assessment. The parameter ensembles give rise to ensembles of model altitude profiles for LTI variables of interest. Extrapolation quality is quantified by statistics derived from the altitude profile ensembles. The vertical extent of meaningful profile continuation is captured by the concept of extrapolation horizons defined as the boundaries of regions where the deviations remain below a prescribed error threshold. To demonstrate the methodology, the initial version of the DIPCont package presented in this paper contains a simplified LTI model with a small number of parameters. As a major source of variability, the pronounced change in temperature across the LTI is captured by self-consistent non-isothermal neutral-density and electron density profiles, constructed from scale height profiles that increase linearly with altitude. The resulting extrapolation horizons are presented for dual-satellite measurements at different inter-spacecraft distances but also for the single-satellite case to compare the two basic mission scenarios under consideration. DIPCont models and procedures are implemented in a collection of Python modules and Jupyter notebooks supplementing this report.

Abstract

Abstract Multispacecraft missions such as Cluster, Themis, Swarm, and MMS contribute to the exploration of geospace with their capability to produce gradient and curl estimates from sets of spatially distributed in situ measurements. This paper combines all existing estimators of the reciprocal vector family for spatial derivatives and their errors. The resulting framework proves to be robust and adaptive in the sense that it works reliably for arrays with arbitrary numbers of spacecraft and possibly degenerate geometries. The analysis procedure is illustrated using synthetic data as well as magnetic measurements from the Cluster and Swarm missions. An implementation of the core algorithm in Python is shown to be compact and computationally efficient so that it can be easily integrated in the various free and open source packages for the Space Physics and Heliophysics community.

Abstract

Maternal effects are ubiquitous. Yet, the pathways through which maternal effects occur in wild mammals remain largely unknown. We hypothesise that maternal immune transfer is a key mechanism by which mothers can affect their offspring fitness, and that individual variation in maternally-derived antibodies mainly depends on a mother’s characteristics and the environmental conditions she experiences. To test this, we assayed six colostrum-derived anti bodies in the plasma of 1,447 neonates in a wild red deer population. Neonatal antibody levels were mainly affected by maternal genes, environmental variation, and costs of prior reproductive investment. We found consistent heterogeneity in maternal performance across traits, with mothers producing the heaviest calves also having calves with more antibodies. Unexpectedly, antibody levels were not associated with calf survival. We provide a unique example of how evolutionary theory on maternal effects can be used to gain insight into the causes of maternal effects in wild populations.

Abstract

International audience; Conditions experienced by individuals during prenatal development can have long-term effects on their phenotype. Maternally transmitted resources are important mediators of such prenatal effects, but the potential interactive effects among them in shaping offspring phenotype have never been studied. Maternally derived testosterone is known to stimulate growth, but these benefits may be counterbalanced by an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Maternally transmitted carotenoids might have the capacity to scavenge ROS and thereby buffer an increase in oxidative stress caused by prenatal exposure to high testosterone levels. Here, we experimentally tested for such interactive effects between maternal yolk testosterone and carotenoid in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). We found that hatching mass was reduced and reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) levels at the end of the period of maximal growth increased in chicks from eggs injected with either testosterone or carotenoid (only a tendency in chicks from testosterone-injected eggs). However, when both egg compounds were manipulated simultaneously, hatching mass and ROM levels were not affected, showing that both carotenoid and testosterone lose their detrimental effects when the ratio between the 2 compounds is balanced. Our study provides the first experimental evidence for interactive effects of 2 maternally derived egg compounds on offspring phenotype and suggests that developmental cues are tightly coadjusted within an egg.

9. Decomposing phenotypic skew and its effects on the predicted response to strong selection

Abstract

The major frameworks for predicting evolutionary change assume that a phenotype's underlying genetic and environmental components are normally distributed. However, the predictions of these frameworks may no longer hold if distributions are skewed. Despite this, phenotypic skew has never been decomposed, meaning the fundamental assumptions of quantitative genetics remain untested. Here we demonstrate that the substantial phenotypic skew in the body size of juvenile blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) is driven by environmental factors. Although skew had little impact on our predictions of selection response in this case, our results highlight the impact of skew on the estimation of inheritance and selection. Specifically, the nonlinear parent-offspring regressions induced by skew, alongside selective disappearance, can strongly bias estimates of heritability. The ubiquity of skew and strong directional selection on juvenile body size imply that heritability is commonly overestimated, which may in part explain the discrepancy between predicted and observed trait evolution.

Abstract

This work introduces a numerical multiphase model for multi-component mixtures, utilizing tabulated data for physical and transport properties across a spectrum of conditions from near-vacuum pressures to supercritical states. The property data are derived using Perturbed Chain Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (PC-SAFT), vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) calculations, entropy scaling methodologies, and Group Contribution (GC) methods. These techniques accurately reflect the thermodynamic behaviors of real fluids, avoiding the empirical estimation of Equation of State (EoS) input parameters. Implemented in OpenFOAM, the fluid dynamics solver is designed to address the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for multi-component mixtures. The methodology integrates operator splitting to manage hyperbolic and parabolic steps distinctively. Hyperbolic terms are solved using the HLLC (Harten-Lax-van Leer-Contact) solver with temporal integration performed via a third-order Strong-Stability-Preserving Runge–Kutta (SSP-RK3) method. Viscous stress tensor contributions in the momentum equation are handled through an implicit velocity correction equation, while parabolic terms in the energy equation are explicitly solved. The simulation efficiency is further enhanced by adaptive Local Time Stepping and the Immersed Boundary (IB) method, which addresses interactions between the fluid and solid boundaries. Turbulence is resolved using the Wall Adaptive Large Eddy (WALE) model. Applied to high-pressure diesel fuel spray injections into non-reacting (nitrogen) gas environments, the model has been validated against Engine Combustion Network (ECN) data for the Spray-C configuration, featuring a fully cavitating multi-hole orifice. Results demonstrate that the model achieves accurate predictions across a broad range of tested conditions without the need for tuning or calibration parameters.

Abstract

The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. We also report argon purity and detector uniformity measurements and provide comparisons to detector simulations.

Abstract

Abstract The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $$19.7(16.3)\times 10^{20}$$ 19.7 ( 16.3 ) × 10 20 protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $$4.7\times 10^{20}$$ 4.7 × 10 20 POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 and the impact of priors on the $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}$$ δ CP measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $$\sin ^2\theta _{23}$$ sin 2 θ 23 with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 from reactors, $$\sin ^2\theta _{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$$ sin 2 θ 23 = 0 . 561 - 0.032 + 0.021 using Feldman–Cousins corrected intervals, and $$\varDelta {}m^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times 10^{-3}~\text {eV}^2$$ Δ m 32 2 = 2 . 494 - 0.058 + 0.041 × 10 - 3 eV 2 using constant $$\varDelta \chi ^{2}$$ Δ χ 2 intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$$ δ CP = - 1 . 97 - 0.70 + 0.97 using Feldman–Cousins corrected intervals, and $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}=0,\pi $$ δ CP = 0 , π is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $$2\sigma $$ 2 σ credible level using a flat prior in $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}},$$ δ CP , and just below $$2\sigma $$ 2 σ using a flat prior in $$\sin \delta _{\textrm{CP}}.$$ sin δ CP . When the external constraint on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 is removed, $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times 10^{-3},$$ sin 2 θ 13 = 28 . 0 - 6.5 + 2.8 × 10 - 3 , in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Abstract

Many trait measurements are size-dependent, and while we often divide these traits by size before fitting statistical models to control for the effect of size, this approach does not account for allometry and the intermediate outcome problem. We describe these problems and outline potential solutions. Abstract

Depending on the genetic architecture of male and female fitness, sex-specific selection can have negative, positive, or neutral consequences for the opposite sex. Theory predicts that conflict between male and female function may drive the breakdown of intrasexual genetic correlations, allowing sexual dimorphism in sexually antagonistic traits. Reproductive traits are the epitome of this, showing highly differentiated proximate functions between the sexes. Here we use divergent artificial selection lines for female reproductive investment to test how female-specific selection on a sex-limited trait affects male reproductive success in a precocial bird, the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). We demonstrate that selection for increased egg investment in females positively affects male reproductive success both in competitive and non-competitive mating situations. This increased reproductive success was linked to a relatively larger left testis in males originating from lines selected for high female reproductive investment. Given that female quail have functional gonads only on their left side, this correlated response indicates that selection has acted on the shared developmental basis of male and female gonads. Our study thereby provides evidence for a positive genetic correlation between key reproductive traits in males and females despite a high degree of sexual dimorphism, and suggests that, in this system, selection on reproductive function is sexually concordant.

Abstract

In species with biparental care, behavioural coordination in the provisioning of the progeny is hypothesized to increase the number of offspring that survive to independence. Coordination is often quantified by two metrics, alternation and synchrony. Turn-taking (leading to an alternation pattern) can result when one parent’s investment strategy is based on the investment of its partner (i.e. conditional cooperation). This should increase the overall provisioning rate and improve offspring body condition. Synchrony might equalise food delivery among offspring and therefore decrease the variance in offspring body condition within the brood. Overall, offspring survival could be increased by parental coordination. Finally, pairs with low coordination, and with potentially lower reproductive success, are expected to be more likely to divorce. In this study, we use a dataset on 473 pairs of house sparrows in a natural insular population to test these hypotheses. We found no effect of the pair’s apparent coordination on offspring condition, offspring survival, or divorce rate, questioning the adaptive significance of this behaviour. We argue that, in this species, the detection of a higher frequency of alternation and synchrony, when compared to chance expectation, might be induced by the environment, rather than result from an emergent pair behaviour selected for fitness benefits.

Abstract

Behavioral coordination when provisioning offspring, through alternation and synchrony, has been hypothesized to influence rearing success. However, studying coordination at the pair level presents two analytical difficulties. First, alternating or synchronous (i.e., simultaneous) feeding can occur randomly and be induced by a shared environment. Therefore, a null model must account for this apparent coordination that occurs by chance. Second, alternation and synchrony in provisioning are intrinsically linked to the rate of provisioning itself, and the effects of coordination and provisioning rate, for instance on fitness, need to be distinguished. In this paper, we explore several randomization procedures and simulation scenarios to tease apart true coordination from random alternation and synchrony, and to find an appropriate statistical model for analyzing coordination. First, to establish a baseline of alternated or synchronous visits expected by chance, we took data from a natural population of house sparrows and randomized inter-feeding intervals in various ways. Alternation and synchrony in the observed dataset were higher than expected by chance under any of our randomizations. However, it was impossible to exclude that alternation and synchrony patterns did not arise due to the pair's shared environment. Second, to identify a way of statistically modeling coordination without generating spurious effects due to intrinsic mathematical relationships between coordination and provisioning rates, we simulated data according to different scenarios. Only one out of five candidate models for analyzing alternation was deemed appropriate, and gave similarly appropriate results for analyzing synchrony. This work highlights the importance and difficulty of finding an adequate null model for studying behavioral coordination and other emergent behaviors. In addition, it demonstrates that analyzing simulated data, prior to analyzing empirical data, enables researchers to avoid spurious effects.

Abstract

Abstract The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries provide pattern-recognition logic essential to the reconstruction of particle interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment far detector. ProtoDUNE-SP, located at CERN, is exposed to a charged-particle test beam. This paper gives an overview of the Pandora reconstruction algorithms and how they have been tailored for use at ProtoDUNE-SP. In complex events with numerous cosmic-ray and beam background particles, the simulated reconstruction and identification efficiency for triggered test-beam particles is above 80% for the majority of particle type and beam momentum combinations. Specifically, simulated 1 GeV/c charged pions and protons are correctly reconstructed and identified with efficiencies of 86.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 % and 84.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 %, respectively. The efficiencies measured for test-beam data are shown to be within 5% of those predicted by the simulation.

Abstract

Work completed includes a field study and protocol analysis of experienced map readers solving a localization problem. The analysis focused on identifying both the features the map readers attended to and the information processes involved in solving the problem. The information processes identified were reconnaissance, map orientation, feature matching, relation or configuration matching, and hypothesis generation and evaluation. The laboratory simulation studies were conducted on the basis of the field study. They both involved matching a photographic scene to a station point and direction of view on a topographic map. Results of these studies tended to confirm the description of the features and processes from the field study. Two supplementary studies were carried out. One used an alternative laboratory map reading task and provided converging evidence for the effects of manipulation of the amount of information available in the map. The other study was carried out to determine the precision with which map readers could judge physical distance and slope from photographic scenes and maps. This ability would constrain the possibility of using metric information in map reading. Preliminary specification for a computational architecture for the problem solving aspects of the drop-off site problem was completed. The model includes both knowledge bases for features and hypothesized solutions as well as a control structure for guiding problem solving activity.

Abstract

Research synthesis, such as comparative and meta-analyses, requires the extraction of effect sizes from primary literature, which are commonly calculated from descriptive statistics. However, the exact values of such statistics are commonly hidden in figures.Extracting descriptive statistics from figures can be a slow process that is not easily reproducible. Additionally, current software lacks an ability to incorporate important meta-data (e.g., sample sizes, treatment / variable names) about experiments and is not integrated with other software to streamline analysis pipelines.Here we present the R package metaDigitise which extracts descriptive statistics such as means, standard deviations and correlations from four plot types: 1) mean/error plots (e.g. bar graphs with standard errors), 2) box plots, 3) scatter plots and 4) histograms. metaDigitise is user-friendly and easy to learn as it interactively guides the user through the data extraction process. Notably, it enables large-scale extraction by automatically loading image files, letting the user stop processing, edit and add to the resulting data-frame at any point.Digitised data can be easily re-plotted and checked, facilitating reproducible data extraction from plots with little inter-observer bias. We hope that by making the process of figure extraction more flexible and easy to conduct it will improve the transparency and quality of meta-analyses in the future.

Abstract

Cooperative breeding typically evolves within discrete, stable groups of individuals, in which group members derive direct and/or indirect fitness benefits from cooperative behaviour. In such systems, strong selection on group discrimination should emerge. Despite this prediction, relatively few studies have investigated the mechanism of group discrimination in cooperative vertebrates, and the results of many may be confounded by ‘expectancy violation’, since test individuals from which stimuli were derived remained in the group during experimentation. Here, we used a novel experimental protocol that eliminates this confounding effect in a test of group discrimination in cooperatively breeding chestnut-crowned babblers, Pomatostomus ruficeps , using long-distance contact calls. Long-distance contact calls were found to be individually specific, but to lack obvious group level signatures. Using dual playbacks of removed group and nongroup members, we found that these calls allow effective discrimination: groups unanimously approached the speaker broadcasting calls of group members and concomitantly increased their contact call rates. Together, our results suggest that group discrimination emerges from individual recognition. Additionally, the affiliative behaviour of group members towards playbacks of removed members contrasts with the aggressive responses towards nongroup members found in all other studies. One explanation for these differences stems from our elimination of expectancy violation, but further studies are required to verify this.

Abstract

Oxidative stress has been suggested as a mechanism underlying the costs of reproduction and life history trade-offs. Reproductive activities may lead to high production of pro-oxidants, whose activity can generate oxidative damage when not countered by adequate antioxidant defenses. Because inter-individual differences in the efficiency of the antioxidant system are influenced by an individual's diet, food availability experienced during reproduction may affect the females' antioxidant status and, in birds, their ability to transfer antioxidants into their eggs. Moreover, a female's ability to cope with oxidative stress has been suggested to influence pigment deposition in the eggshell, suggesting a possible signaling function of eggshell maculation. Here we performed a food supplementation experiment in a natural population of great tits (Parus major) in order to investigate how nutritional conditions experienced during the egg laying period affect the female's oxidative status and egg investment and how maternal oxidative status and egg antioxidant protection relate to eggshell pigmentation. We show that food-supplemented females had lower oxidative damage levels (ROMs) than non-food-supplemented females. Furthermore, a female's ROMs levels were negatively associated with the levels of yolk antioxidant protection in her eggs, but this negative association was only significant in non-food-supplemented females. This suggests that oxidative stress experienced during reproduction influences the allocation of antioxidants into the eggs. Moreover, we observed a positive relationship between eggshell pigment distribution and maternal and yolk antioxidant protection, suggesting that eggshell pigmentation is a cue of female (and offspring) quality.

Abstract

Abstract Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform high precision measurements of neutrinos in the detector, final state particles need to be effectively identified, and their energy accurately reconstructed. This article proposes an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network to perform the classification of energy deposits and reconstructed particles as track-like or arising from electromagnetic cascades. Results from testing the algorithm on experimental data from ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype of the DUNE far detector, are presented. The network identifies track- and shower-like particles, as well as Michel electrons, with high efficiency. The performance of the algorithm is consistent between experimental data and simulation.

Abstract As accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments improve oscillation parameter constraints with more data, control over systematic uncertainties on the incoming neutrino flux and interaction models is increasingly important. The intense beams offered by modern experiments permit a variety of options to constrain the flux using in situ “standard candle” measurements. These standard candles must use very well understood interaction processes to avoid introducing additional interaction model dependence. One option often discussed in this context is the “low- $$\nu $$ ν ” method, which is designed to isolate neutrino interactions where there is low energy-transfer to the nucleus, such that the interaction cross section is expected to be approximately constant as a function of neutrino energy. The shape of the low-energy transfer event sample can then be used to extract the flux shape. Applications of the method at high neutrino energies (many tens of GeV) are well understood. However, the applicability of the method at the lower energies of current and future few-GeV accelerator neutrino experiments remains unclear due to the presence of nuclear and form-factor effects inherent in the interaction models.In this analysis we examine the prospects for improving constraints on the accelerator neutrino fluxes in situ with the low- $$\nu $$ ν method in an experiment-independent way, using (anti)neutrino interactions on argon and hydrocarbon targets from the GENIE, NEUT, NuWro and GiBUU event generators. We begin by investigating the extent to which deviations from the constant cross-section assumption are dependent on poorly understood aspects of the neutrino interaction model. We then assess whether a low energy-transfer event sample can be confidently identified using experimentally accessible observables. We finally consider how the practicalities of reconstructing the energy spectrum of interacting neutrinos in realistic detectors might further limit the utility of low- $$\nu $$ ν flux constraints. The results show that flux constraints from the low- $$\nu $$ ν method would be severely dependent on the interaction model assumptions used in an analysis of neutrinos with energies below 5 GeV, and anti-neutrinos below at least 15 GeV. The spread of model predictions show that a low- $$\nu $$ ν analysis is unlikely to offer much improvement on typical neutrino flux uncertainties, even with a perfect detector. Notably—running counter to the assumption inherent to the low- $$\nu $$ ν method—the model-dependence increases with decreasing energy transfer for experiments in the few-GeV region.

Abstract

Organizational processes during prenatal development can have long-term effects on an individual's phenotype. Because these early developmental stages are sensitive to environmental influences, mothers are in a unique position to alter their offspring's phenotype by differentially allocating resources to their developing young. However, such prenatal maternal effects are difficult to disentangle from other forms of parental care, additive genetic effects, and/or other forms of maternal inheritance, hampering our understanding of their evolutionary consequences. Here we used divergent selection lines for high and low prenatal maternal investment and their reciprocal line crosses in a precocial bird-the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica)-to quantify the relative importance of genes and prenatal maternal effects in shaping offspring phenotype. Maternal but not paternal origin strongly affected offspring body size and survival throughout development. Although the effects of maternal egg investment faded over time, they were large at key life stages. Additionally, there was evidence for other forms of maternal inheritance affecting offspring phenotype at later stages of development. Our study is among the first to successfully disentangle prenatal maternal effects from all other sources of confounding variation and highlights the important role of prenatal maternal provisioning in shaping offspring traits closely linked to fitness.

Abstract

Sex-linkage is predicted to evolve in response to sex-specific or sexually antagonistic selection. In line with this prediction, most sex-linked genes are associated with reproduction in the respective sex. In addition to traits directly involved in fertility and fecundity, mediators of maternal effects may be predisposed to evolve sex-linkage, because they indirectly affect female fitness through their effect on offspring phenotype. Here, we test for sex-linked inheritance of a key mediator of prenatal maternal effects in oviparous species, the transfer of maternally derived testosterone to the eggs. Consistent with maternal inheritance, we found that in Japanese quail ( Coturnix japonica ) granddaughters resemble their maternal (but not their paternal) grandmother in yolk testosterone deposition. This pattern of resemblance was not due to non-genetic priming effects of testosterone exposure during prenatal development, as an experimental manipulation of yolk testosterone levels did not affect the females' testosterone transfer to their own eggs later in life. Instead, W chromosome and/or mitochondrial variation may underlie the observed matrilineal inheritance pattern. Ultimately, the inheritance of mediators of maternal effects along the maternal line will allow for a fast and direct response to female-specific selection, thereby affecting the dynamics of evolutionary processes mediated by maternal effects.

Abstract

Natural selection favours increased investment in reproduction, yet considerable variation in parental investment is observed in natural populations. Life-history theory predicts that this variation is maintained by a trade-off between the benefits of increased reproductive investment and its associated costs for the parents. The nature of these costs of reproduction, however, remains poorly understood. The brain is an energetically highly expensive organ and increased reproductive investment may, therefore, negatively affect brain maintenance. Using artificial selection lines for high and low prenatal maternal investment in a precocial bird, the Japanese quail ( Coturnix japonica ), we provide experimental evidence for this hypothesis by showing that increased prenatal provisioning negatively affects the size of a particular brain region of the mother, the cerebellum. Our finding suggests that cognitive demands may constrain the evolution of parental investment, and vice versa, contributing to the maintenance of variation in reproductive behaviour in animal populations.

Abstract

To our knowledge the optimal freeze cycle length in renal cryotherapy is unknown. Ten-minute time based freeze cycles were compared to temperature based freeze cycles to -20C.Laparoscopic renal cryotherapy was performed on 16 swine. Time based trials consisted of a double 10-minute freeze separated by a 5-minute thaw. Temperature based trials were double cycles of 1, 5 or 10-minute freeze initiated after 1 of 4 sensors indicated -20C. A 5-minute active thaw was used between freeze cycles. Control trials consisted of cryoneedle placement for 25 minutes without freeze or thaw. Viability staining and histological analysis were done.There was no difference in cellular necrosis between any of the temperature based freeze cycles (p = 0.1). Time based freeze cycles showed more nuclear pyknosis, indicative of necrosis, than the 3 experimental freeze cycles for the renal cortex (p = 0.05) but not for the renal medulla (p = 0.61). Mean time to -20C for freeze cycle 1 was 19 minutes 10 seconds (range 9 to 46 minutes). In 4 of 21 trials (19%) -20C was never attained despite freezing for 25 to 63 minutes.There was no difference in immediate cellular necrosis among double 1, 5 or 10-minute freeze cycles. Cellular necrosis was evident on histological analysis for trials in which -20C was attained and in freeze cycles based on time alone. With a standard 10-minute cryoablation period most treated parenchyma 1 cm from the probe never attained -20C. Cell death appeared to occur at temperatures warmer than -20C during renal cryotherapy.

Abstract

Safe intraluminal access to the ureter and kidney is essential for endourologic procedures. Pharmacologic manipulation of ureteral smooth muscle could conceivably ease access and decrease morbidity. To minimize systemic effects, local intraluminal administration would be optimal, but the urothelium presents a barrier to the passage of medications. We present a novel ex-vivo apparatus and technique to measure ureteral peristalsis and assess drug diffusion.Excised 3-cm pieces of porcine or human ureters were placed inside a specially designed apparatus that allows separate manipulation of the intra- and extraluminal environments while measuring peristalsis. Intraluminal antegrade perfusion was maintained by a reservoir. A pressure transducer was placed at the inflow end of each ureter segment. After equilibration, phenylephrine (10 μM) was then added extraluminally to induce peristalsis. Nifedipine was then added to the intraluminal reservoir or the external organ bath. The concentration of nifedipine needed to cause aperistalsis was measured.In 12 trials, extraluminal nifedipine caused aperistalsis at a concentration of 1 ± 0.1 μM, while intraluminal nifedipine needed 10.2 ± 1.1 μM. Significantly higher concentrations of nifedipine were needed intraluminally to cause aperistalsis, (P 0.0001).With our apparatus, we can control the intraluminal and extraluminal ureteral environments, and measure peristalsis before and after drug administration. This apparatus should help investigators who are interested in studying both the diffusion of a wide range of drugs, as well as the effects of those medications on ureteral physiology. In this study, the urothelium acted as a significant barrier to the diffusion of nifedipine.

Abstract

The da Vinci surgical platform is becoming increasingly available and utilized. Due to the lack of haptic feedback, visual cues are necessary to estimate grip forces and tissue tensions during surgery. We directly measured the grip forces of robotic EndoWrist instruments using the three available da Vinci robotic surgical platforms.Robotic instruments were tested in the da Vinci S, Si, and Standard systems. A load cell was placed in a housing unit that allowed for measurement of the grip forces applied by the tip of each robotic instrument. Each instrument was tested six times, and all data were analyzed using Student's t-tests or analysis of variance when appropriate.Slight differences in grip force were seen when the instrument was tested through 2 degrees of freedom at the tip (p = 0.02, analysis of variance) and when comparing a new instrument to an older instrument (p = 0.001 at the neutral position). There was no statistical difference in grip force between the left and right robotic arms. There was a broad range of grip forces between the various robotic instruments. The lowest grip force was registered in the double fenestrated grasper (2.26 ± 0.15 N), whereas the highest was seen in the Hem-o-lok clip applier (39.92 ± 0.89 N). In comparison to the S and Si, the Standard platform appeared to have significantly higher grip forces.Different grip forces were observed among the various robotic instruments commonly used during urologic surgery and between the Standard and the S and Si platforms.

Abstract

Tisseel® is used to control minor bleeding during laparoscopic procedures. The DuploSpray MIS™ spray system allows thin, even application over a larger surface area. We use sprayed Tisseel as the sole agent to control hemorrhage and seal the renal collecting system after severe porcine laparoscopic partial nephrectomy.We performed staged bilateral severe laparoscopic partial nephrectomy in 12 Yucatan pigs using a longitudinal cut from upper to lower pole through the entire collecting system. In each pig 1 kidney was harvested immediately while the other was harvested after 4 weeks. After hilar clamping laparoscopic partial nephrectomy was done with cold scissors in 6 pigs while LigaSure™ was used in the other 6. Sprayed Tisseel was applied, and bleeding and urinary leakage were evaluated. Additional Tisseel was applied for repeat bleeding. We performed retrograde pyelogram (chronic) and burst pressure testing of the arterial and collecting systems.All animals survived 4 weeks. One urinoma was seen on retrograde pyelogram in the cold cut group. Average hilar clamp time was similar in the acute and chronic study arms. Average estimated blood loss was significantly less in the LigaSure group (p = 0.0045). Average arterial burst pressure was significantly different in the chronic and acute groups (605.8 vs 350.4 mm Hg, p = 0.008) but average collecting system burst pressure was similar (186.3 and 149.5 mm Hg, respectively).Sprayed Tisseel without suturing effectively sealed the arterial and collecting system after severe laparoscopic partial nephrectomy in the porcine model.

Abstract

Study Type – Therapy (RCT) Level of Evidence 1b What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy is a common procedure throughout the world, but the optimal technique for closure of the percutaneous tract is unknown. This is important for two reasons, the first is that the access tract may bleed after removal of the instruments and access sheath, the second is that several randomized studies have shown improved patient comfort by not having any nephrostomy tubes after the procedure. Our study is the first to compare three common methods of access tract closure in a randomized study. OBJECTIVE • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of ‘tubeless’ nephrostomy tract closure in reducing postoperative morbidity after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). MATERIALS AND METHODS • In all, 31 patients undergoing PCNL were randomized into three groups, each with a different method of nephrostomy tract closure: using either a gelatin matrix haemostatic sealant (FloSeal), fascial stitch or Cope loop nephrostomy tube. • We compared operative time, estimated blood loss (EBL), postoperative stay, analgaesics use, changes in creatinine and haemoglobin levels, and stone clearance rate, as well as postoperative short-form (SF)-36 quality-of-life and pain analogue scores at five different time points after surgery. • All data were analysed using a one-way anova test. • A repeated measures anova test was used selectively to assess the progression of SF-36 and pain analogue scores. RESULTS • The preoperative variables operative time, EBL, postoperative stay (P= 0.45), analgaesia use (P= 0.79), changes in creatinine (P= 0.28) and haemoglobin (P= 0.09) levels, and postoperative SF-36 scores were not significantly different. • In contrast, the differences in analogue pain scales at 1 week after surgery (P= 0.02) and the trends of analogue pain score progression (P= 0.03) were statistically significant. • Three patients underwent second-look procedures for residual stones and there was one case of postoperative pyelonephritis in a multiple sclerosis patient. CONCLUSIONS • The Cope loop closure patients recovered fastest, while FloSeal closure patients experienced initial increase in pain followed by resolution at 1 month. • As a result of the small study group sizes, it is difficult to show any significant difference in postoperative pain, especially in long-term follow-up; further clinical evaluation is necessary.

Abstract

Abstract DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6 $$\times $$ × 6 $$\times $$ × 6 m $$^3$$ 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019–2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties.

Abstract

When turning without vision or audition, people tend to perceive their locomotion as a change in heading relative to objects in the remembered surroundings. Such perception of self-rotation depends on sensitivity to information for movement from biomechanical activity of the locomotor system or from inertial activation of the vestibular and postural systems. The authors report 3 experiments that inves- tigated the relative contributions of biomechanical and inertial information to perceiving the speed of self-rotation. Using a circular treadmill, the proportions of the 2 sources of proprioceptive information were varied, creating walking conditions with a constant rate of biomechanical activity but with variable speeds of rotation relative to inertial space. The results reveal stable individual differences in sensitivity to information for the perception of locomotion. Just more than half of the participants based their perceived speed of self-rotation on biomechanical information, whereas the others based theirs on inertial information.

First published in 1978. Since World War II the field of perception has developed in two major directions. The first evolved out of the traditional psychophysical approach and is manifest today in the new psychophysics. The second direction is in the increasing bond between the fields of perception and cognition. This volume grew out of the context of this second direction, a particular product of two workshops (held in the Spring of 1974 and 1975), organized by the Committee on Cognitive Research of the Social Science Research Council. The Committee on Cognition was organized in 1971 to encourage communication and interaction on specific problems in the area of cognition among the various social sciences.

Abstract

Skilled actions exhibit adjustment in calibration to bring about their goals. The sought-after calibrations change as a function of the environmental situation that stages the actions. In these experiments participants sat on one side of a rotating carousel and threw beanbags underhanded at a target fixed on the opposite side. Logically, aimed throwing in this situation involves adjustment to fit changes in limb dynamics (originating from Coriolis forces) and changes in perceived projectile kinematics (originating from the tangential velocity of thrower and target). We studied whether such adjustment involved one or multiple components of recalibration. An initial experiment showed that exposure to rotation while throwing beanbags produced a robust recalibration in the direction of underhanded throws as manifest in throwing at stationary targets from a stationary position. Following some initial decay this recalibration persisted and approached an asymptote. Subsequent experiments suggested two independent components of recalibration. One is based on limb dynamics and accounts for the initial decay. The other is based on the perceived projectile kinematics and accounts for the stable change in throwing direction. These results raised the question of how multiple components of recalibration of an action are related. We propose that movement components are independent and calibrated separately at different levels in the organization of an action.

In this study, different measures derived from 41 3- to 4-year-old children’s selfgenerated picture-book narratives and their performance on a general measure of language development (TELD-2, Hresko, Reid & Hammill, 1991) were evaluated with respect to their possible predictive relation two years later with 5 areas of academic achievement (General information, Reading recognition, Reading comprehension, Math, Spelling) assessed using the Peabody Individualized Achievement Test – Revised (PIAT-R, Markwardt, 1998). Children’s TELD-2 scores were significantly predictive of their General information scores. The narrative measures of conjunction use, event content, perspective shift, and mental state reference were significantly predictive of later Math scores. Post-hocanalyses revealed that, for the same children, the observed relations with Math achievement did not arise with nonspontaneous adult-prompted narrations.

Abstract

This volume on intersensory perception and sensory integration is the second volume of the series, Perception and Perceptual Development: A Critical Review Series. The topic of the volume is timely, for in recent years, many investigators have noted that information about any natural event is obtained by a perceiver from a variety of sources. Such an observation immediately leads to the question of how this information is synthesized and organized. Of course, the implication that there are several discrete input channels that must be processed has come under immediate attack by researchers such as the Gibsons. They find it extremely artificial to regard natural information as being cut up and requiring cementing. Nevertheless, the possibility that during ontogene­ sis, perception involves the integration of separate information has attracted the attention of scholars concerned with both normal and abnormal development. In the case of normal development, a lively controversy has arisen between those who believe perceptual develop­ ment goes from integration toward differentiation and those who hold the opposite view. In the case of abnormal psychological development such as learning disabilities, many workers have suggested that percep­ tual integration is at fault. In thinking about the issues raised in this volume, we are particularly indebted to our former teachers and colleagues: Eleanor and James Gibson, T. A. Ryan, Robert B. MacLeod, and Jerome Bruner. Epileptische Anfalle sind der dritthaufigste Zwischenfall in einer Zahnarztpraxis. Der Zahnarzt sollte nach dem Bestehen einer Epilepsie fragen und im Umgang mit einem Anfall ausreichend kundig sein. Das Risiko von Zahnverletzungen durch Sturze im Anfall ist erhoht, fester Zahnersatz (z. B. Implantate) zur Aspirationsprophylaxe zu empfehlen. Phenytoin induziert bei 50–60% der Behandelten eine Gingivahyperplasie; Wechsel der Medikation, wenn moglich, und ausreichende Zahnhygiene sind sinnvolle Optionen. Neben der konventionellen Zahnpflege kann der Gebrauch einer elektrischen Zahnburste, die Verwendung von Chlorhexidin sowie regelmasige professionelle Zahnreinigung der phenytoininduzierten Gingivahyperplasie vorbeugen. Zur Lokalanasthesie sollten Substanzen ohne hohen Adrenalinzusatz verwendet werden, z. B. Mepivacain und Articain (max. 1:20000). Kasuistisch wurden epileptische Anfalle beschrieben, die durch (langes) Putzen der Zahne induziert wurden und als Reflexanfalle klassifiziert werden.
