Objective: This study describes the peri-operative results, safety, and functional outcomes of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) performed in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia [or hypertrophy; (BPH)] and a prostate gland volume ≥100 cc. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of a cohort of patients undergoing TURP at a single institution over four years was undertaken. Patients with known prostate cancer were excluded. BACKGROUND: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common syndrome in the community characterised by unstable bladder contractions, resulting in urinary urgency, frequency and nocturia in the absence of detectable disease. Large studies suggest that >10% of the general population is symptomatic. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to summarise the stepwise treatment for OAB that seeks to improve patient quality of life and reduce patient and health system costs. DISCUSSION: OAB is a diagnosis of exclusion that begins with a targeted history and examination of the urogenital system with the aim of assessing the burden of disease on the patient. First-line treatment comprises conservative measures including weight reduction, a decrease in exposure to bladder stimulants, fluid optimisation and pelvic floor exercises. Pharmacological treatments for OAB include anticholinergic medications such as oxybutynin. If the patient is unresponsive to pharmacological treatment, a review by a urology specialist is appropriate. Recommendations may include minimally invasive procedures such as intravesical botulinum toxin A injections, reserving the invasive procedures for patients in specific circumstances.

Objective: To determine the usefulness of histopathological analysis of peri-prostatic fat in a cohort of prostate cancer patients undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) in an Australian regional centre. During RP, removal of the anterior peri-prostatic fat (APPF) is commonly undertaken; some surgeons routinely request histopathological analysis of this specimen. Previously published data show positive cancer detection in peri-prostatic fat in 0–2.5% of specimens and positive yields are mostly detected in patients with adverse pathological features. Subjects and methods: All patients undergoing RP in a regional urology unit in Queensland were identified. Pathology results were examined retrospectively to determine the rate of cancer involvement in APPF specimens and medical records were reviewed to assess any clinical impact. Results: APPF was sent for pathological analysis in 270/298 (90%) of patients undergoing RP. Prostate cancer was detected in one sample containing a single involved lymph node in a patient with Gleason 5 + 4 = 9 prostate cancer and pathological stage pT3bN1R1Mx. The presence of the cancer in the APPF did not affect the decision to offer adjuvant radiotherapy. Conclusion: In our population, we have identified a positive cancer yield of 0.3% in APPF specimens. When combined with all previously published series, we found positive cancer detection in 72/7391 (1%) specimens, and most patients with positive fat involvement had adverse pre-operative and final pathological features. Surgeons may consider omitting sending APPF specimens for analysis based on the low yield with little additional staging information. If surgeons continue this practice, they should consider selectively requesting analysis in intermediate- and high-risk patients. Level of evidence: 2b

Background Major lower limb amputation is a devastating operation most commonly performed for complications of peripheral artery disease or diabetes mellitus. Data suggest that there is a widespread variation in major amputation rates within and between countries. This study aimed to identify key characteristics of patients undergoing this procedure in our region, and to compare our population to the rest of Australia. Secondary analysis was performed to assess differences seen in the Indigenous population. Methods Cases were identified from a prospectively maintained database and medical records were retrospectively reviewed to record relevant clinical information. A literature review was then undertaken to compare our data to other series. Results A total of 51 major lower limb amputations were performed between January 2015 and January 2017, and the mean age of patients was 59.5 years. Over 70% of patients were diabetic, and one-third required dialysis. Twenty-three patients were identified as Indigenous, and they were significantly younger (54.6 ± 11.4 versus 63.5 ± 15.9 years, P = 0.02) and more likely to be diabetic (91.3% versus 65.2%, P ≤ 0.01) compared to non-Indigenous patients. The most common indication was arterial ulcer or gangrene (52.9%), but Indigenous patients were more likely to have amputation due to sepsis (47.8% versus 7.1%, P Conclusion Patients undergoing major amputation in Far North Queensland are more likely to be younger and diabetic than Queensland or Australian counterparts. Diabetes and renal disease were especially prevalent in our cohort, with higher rates found in Indigenous patients.

Sodium glucose-linked transport protein 2 inhibitors are relatively novel drugs, used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Their use since Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme approval in Australia has increased drastically, possibly due to the low risk of hypoglycemic events and their advertised cardiovascular mortality benefits. However, as with any novel drug, adverse effects regarding their use require medical practitioner awareness for optimal patient outcomes. This paper aims to cover the major urological implications, including those pertinent perioperatively, that concern this class of drugs. There is a clear risk of developing genital mycotic infections with the use of sodium glucose-linked transport protein 2 inhibitors, including serious infections such as Fournier’s gangrene. Evidence for developing urinary tract infections has been mixed. Sodium glucose-linked transport protein 2 inhibitor-induced lower urinary tract symptoms may have impacts on quality of life via pollakiuria and nocturia, of which there are increased reports. Perioperative use increases the risk of euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis. It is recommended that sodium glucose-linked transport protein 2 inhibitors be ceased perioperatively.

Recent incidences of audit failures and tax aggressiveness linked to non-audit services have called into question audit firms’ compliance with current restrictions on the provision of aggressive tax planning to their clients. This study investigates whether U.S. audit firms comply with existing regulations. Using quantile regressions, we observe an upper bound in the positive association between auditor-provided tax services (APTS) and tax avoidance. We interpret this bound as evidence of audit firms’ compliance. Interestingly, we observe that the association turns negative for clients with low effective tax rates. This nonlinearity suggests that audit firms take steps to reduce their exposure to these clients. Whereas our main results demonstrate some compliance, trend analysis shows an increase in tax avoidance associated with APTS during our sample period. We also find a more persistent association for larger clients, suggesting that economic bonding influences the tax strategies an audit firm is willing to provide.

Background: Clinical nomograms are routinely used by urologists to predict pathological and clinical outcomes. Commonly used prostate cancer nomograms include Partin's tables and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre (MSKCC) nomograms which were developed in high-volume centres in the United States. We aimed to assess whether these tools are valid for prostate cancer patients in Far North Queensland. Methods: All patients undergoing radical prostatectomy in Cairns between August 2014 and September 2017 were identified. Preoperative data were entered into the online nomogram tools. The predicted probability of organ-confined (OC) disease, extra-prostatic extension (EPE) and seminal vesical invasion was compared to the observed outcomes. Results: Preoperative clinical information was available for 290 patients. Partin's tables accurately estimated OC disease, EPE and seminal vesical invasion with the observed outcome plot overlying the ideal correlation curve. More patients in our cohort had OC disease than was predicted by the MSKCC nomogram; fewer patients had EPE that was predicted by the MSKCC nomogram. On logistic regression modelling, the area under the curve for MSKCC and Partin's were 0.751 and 0.706, respectively, suggesting both tests have good performance in predicting final pathological outcome for our population of patients with no statistical difference between the two nomograms (P = 0.29). Conclusion: The MSKCC preoperative nomogram and Partin's tables were both able to accurately predict pathological outcomes from preoperative clinical information in men from Far North Queensland, despite likely differences in population genetics and environmental exposures.

Two ruthenium-based dyes were used as sensitizers for dye sensitized solar cells: one with anchoring groups – Di-tetrabutylammonium cis-bis(isothiocyanato)bis(2,2′-bipyridyl-4,4′-dicarboxylato)Ruthenium(II), (N719) – and the other without any anchoring group, Tris(bipyridine)Ruthenium(II) chloride (Ru-BPY) were studied to assess the effect of anchoring groups on the performance of dye sensitized solar cells. N719 dye has carboxyl groups that bind to the surface of mesoporous TiO2 whereas Ru-BPY contains no such anchoring groups capable of binding to the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles. The dyes were characterized using absorption spectroscopy, emission measurements and lifetime measurements. The wavelength of maximum absorption for the N719 was 525 nm but this was blue shifted to 516 nm upon attachment to the titanium dioxide substrate. The wavelength of maximum absorption for the Ru-BPY was 450 nm before and after application of the dye to titanium dioxide indicating that the interaction of the anchoring groups with the TiO2 nanoparticles had an effect on the absorption band of the N719. The N719 dye sensitized solar cell yielded a solar-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency of 1.35%, which was much higher than that of Ru-BPY (0.09%), thus indicating that anchoring groups on dye sensitizers greatly increase the efficiency of dye sensitized solar cell.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is most commonly identified incidentally from imaging for unrelated abdominal conditions but may also present with local symptoms, paraneoplastic syndromes or symptoms from metastatic disease. Common sites of metastasis include lung, lymph nodes and bone. Rarer sites of spread include cerebral and cutaneous metastases; distant disease in the oral cavity and facial skin has been described. 1 Patients who present with atypical lesions can present a diagnostic dilemma; histopathological analysis with immunohistochemistry is usually needed to confirm the underlying primary malignancy. We present a case of a patient presenting with symptomatic, synchronous metastases from a primary RCC with lesions at different sites in the absence of symptoms related to the undiagnosed primary tumour.

The photophysical properties of eight structurally diverse near-infrared cyanine dyes were investigated with respect to their structural features and potential use as light-harvesting sensitizers of dye sensitized solar cells. The absorption, emission, and lifetime characteristics of the dyes were assessed under a variety of conditions. The photophysical properties and sensitizing efficiency of three of the eight dyes, with an additional six-membered cyclic ring, were markedly different from the other five. The dyes absorbed light of wavelength within the range of 779–823 nm and emitted within the range of 832–876 nm.The dyes had fluorescence quantum yield in the range of 14–22%. The surface morphology and elemental analysis of the cyanine dye sensitized photoanodes were characterized via Field-Emission Scanning Microscopy Imaging (FESEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The performance of the fabricated cyanine dye sensitized solar cells was assessed via current-voltage and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurements. The solar-to-electric power conversion efficiency ranged from 0.04% to 0.24%.

We investigate the relation among trapped cash, permanently reinvested earnings, and foreign cash. We define trapped cash as cash and cash equivalents generated by foreign earnings and held by U.S. MNC's foreign subsidiaries due to concerns over repatriation taxes, and explain why trapped cash, permanently reinvested earnings, and foreign cash are not synonymous. We exploit the one-time tax rate reduction on repatriated earnings provided for under the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 to construct a proxy to identify firms with trapped cash. We find R&D intensity, capital intensity, foreign growth opportunities and tax haven subsidiaries are significant indicators of trapped cash. Interestingly, we find firms with tax haven operations are less likely to have trapped cash. These findings highlight the joint role of tax havens as low-tax jurisdictions and offshore financial hubs. Finally, we investigate the relation between firm value and trapped cash. Controlling for excess cash, we find that trapped cash is negatively related to firm value, but primarily for firms with poor governance. Overall, results suggest that our measure is a parsimonious way to estimate the likelihood of having trapped cash that can be applied to a large sample of firms.

Porphyrins occur in a number of important biomolecules and are also synthetically made for use as probe component of chemical and biological sensors. The performance of dye sensitized solar cells with two different porphyrin dyes was investigated in this work. The two porphyrin complexes comprised of a metal-free 5, 10, 15, 20-meso-tetrakis-(9H-2-fluorene-yl) porphyrin (H2TFP) and its Zinc complex (ZnTFP). UV-Vis, Fluorescence, and Fourier transformed infrared measurements of the two dyes were carried out to evaluate their absorption, emission and binding characteristics. Both dyes absorbed light in the UV-visible region all the way to the near-infrared. The surface morphology and elemental analysis of the porphyrin dye sensitized photoanodes were determined using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy Imaging and Transmission Electron Microscopy Imaging. Cyclic voltammetry studies, current-voltage characteristics and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopic studies were also carried out. Solar-to-electric energy efficiency of H2TFP dye sensitized solar cell was higher (0.11%) than that of the zinc complex (0.08%). Thus the metal free porphyrin generated more power than the zinc complex under similar conditions. The impedance measurement also displayed less overall resistance for the free porphyrin (50 Ω) compared with the zinc complex (130 Ω). The LUMO levels of H2TFP and ZnTFP sensitizers were -0.87 eV and -0.77 eV respectively. Both of these LUMO values are higher than the lower bound level of the conduction band of TiO2 (-4.0 eV), ensuring the efficient injection of an electron from the excited porphyrin dye to the conduction band of the titanium dioxide.

Dye sensitized solar cell represents a promising method for the conversion of solar energy to electric energy. In the present work free N,N'-bis(salicyli-dene)ethylenediamine and its copper (II) complex were synthesized, characterized, and investigated for use as dye sensitizers in the fabrication of dye sensitized solar cells. The dyes were characterized using UV-Vis, Steady State Florescence, and Fluorescence Lifetime, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, and Cyclic Voltammetry. The thermogravimetric analyses of the ligand and the ligand Copper complex demonstrate the stabilizing effect of the copper ion on the ligand complex. Additionally, the copper ion is shown to stabilize the structure, as evidenced by the 150oC increase in the extrapolated onset temperature of the decomposition event. The ligand copper complex is further stabilized by the presence of the copper, which is determined by the 6.34% residue that remained at the end of the thermogravimetric analysis, compared with 0% residue when applying the same condition for the ligand without copper. The current-voltage characteristics of the cells and the electrochemical impedance were determined. The photovoltaic performance of the solar cell devices fabricated using N,N'-bis(salicylidene) ethylenediamine dye was found to be slightly better than those produced from the copper complex. The solar to electric power efficiency of the ligand-based dye sensitized solar cell was 0.14% and that of the copper complex was found to 0.12%. Although the difference in the cell efficiency is quite small, it is obvious that the insertion of Copper into the ligand did not enhance the performance of the solar cells. The photocurrent-photovoltage results are consistent with the absorption spectra that showed a more prominent band for the ligand. The free hydroxyl groups, present in the ligand but absent from the copper complex owing to their coordination with the copper metal, could be responsible for the difference in the performance of the devices. The hydroxyl groups get attached to the TiO2 and facilitate the transfer of electrons.

Ureteral stents are an essential tool in modern day adult and paediatric urology. They are usually placed with the intention of removal or replacement after a specific time but may occasionally be forgotten or unintentionally retained. We present the case of a young man who presented with symptoms caused by a retained ureteric stent placed 26 years earlier during reconstructive ureteric surgery as an infant.

Natural pigments containing anthocyanidins extracted from 14 fruit samples were studied as possible sensitizers for the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). The Dyes extracted from pomegranate and berry families are reported as candidates for DSSC with a lead current between 0.5-3.98 (mA) and a voltage of 150-350 (mV), and so could be used as photosensitizers in the construction of affordable and low cost DSSC especially for educational purposes. Based on direct sunlight illumination, pomegranate dye had the maximum efficiency in energy conversion (0.22%) followed by, raspberry (0.16%), blackberry (0.14%), blueberry (0.05%) and red grape (0.02%).

Background: Recent behavioral studies have suggested that individuals with sloping audiograms exhibit localized improvements in frequency discrimination in the frequency region near the drop in hearing. Auditory-evoked potentials may provide evidence of such cortical plasticity and reorganization of frequency maps. Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate electrophysiological evidence of cortical plasticity related to cortical frequency representation and discrimination abilities in older individuals with high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). It was hypothesized that the P3 response in this group would show evidence of physiological reorganization of frequency maps and enhanced neural representation at the edge of their high-frequency loss due to their restricted SNHL. Research Design: The P3 auditory event-related potential in response to small frequency changes was recorded in a repeated measures design using an oddball paradigm that presented upward and downward frequency changes of 2%, 5%, and 20% to three groups of listeners. Study Sample: P3 recordings from a group of seven older individuals with a restricted sloping hearing loss >1000 or 2000 Hz was compared to two control groups of younger (n = 7) and older (n = 7) individuals with normal hearing/borderline normal hearing through 4000 Hz. Data Collection and Analysis: The auditory P3 was recorded using an oddball paradigm (80%/20%) with the standard tone at the highest frequency of normal hearing in the hearing-impaired participants, also known as the edge frequency (EF). EFs were either 1000 or 2000 Hz for all participants. The target tones represented upward and downward frequency changes of 2%, 5%, and 20% from the standard tones of either 1000 or 2000 Hz. Waveforms were recorded using a two-channel clinical-evoked potential system. Latency and amplitude of the P300 peak were analyzed across groups for the three frequency conditions using repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: The results of this study suggest that the P3 response can be elicited by frequency changes as small as 2–5%. P3 responses at the EF of hearing loss were present and larger in amplitude for more participants with a sloping hearing loss compared to age-matched normal-hearing peers tested at the same frequencies. As a result, the older participants with sloping hearing losses had P3 responses more similar to the younger normal-hearing participants than their age-matched peers with normal hearing. Conclusions: These preliminary results partially support the idea of enhanced cortical representation of frequency at the EF of localized SNHL in older adults that is not purely due to age.

Historically, the histological, clinical, and radiographic definition of these lesions has been inconsistent

We investigate the relation between tax risk and valuation of a firm’s tax avoidance through an analysis of the stock price reaction towards the firms that were exposed through the Luxembourg tax leaks. This event provides a unique opportunity to examine investors’ reaction to revelation of a firm’s specific tax avoidance strategies and the firm’s efforts to reduce the associated tax risks. Prior research investigating the relation of tax risk and firm value has depended on measures that could be compromised by firm reporting choices (e.g., uncertain tax benefit disclosures). The exogenous nature of the Luxembourg tax leaks provides an opportunity to better disentangle a firm’s actual tax risk from its “self-reported” tax risk. We find, on average, investors reacted positively to news of firms’ inclusion in the tax leaks. This is in contrast to the documented negative reaction to news of other tax shelter participation and the negative media and political reaction to the Luxembourg tax leaks. We attribute the difference in market reaction to information on firms’ preemptive steps to reduce the risk associated with their tax strategies by securing advance tax rulings. In cross-sectional analysis, we observe that among U.S. multinational firms, the market reacted more positively for those firms perceived to be less tax aggressive, as proxied by the firm’s cash effective tax rate. In addition, we find limited evidence of corporate governance explaining the variation in market reaction. We also fail to find empirical evidence of political or reputational costs explaining the variation in market reaction.

Ureteric stents are very frequently used by urologists and will commonly cause patients to experience a variety of lower urinary tract symptoms. 1 Whilst many practitioners in primary care or emergency departments may be aware of the common stent related symptoms, occasionally these commonly employed devices may have complications which can present unusually. An uncommon complication is stent migration, which may manifest in symptoms not usually seen in the emergency department.

After an outbreak of blotch leafminer (Cameraria caryaefoliella) on field-grown pecan (Carya illinoinensis) trees in 2010, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the consequences of the injury on carbon assimilation and photosynthetic efficiency, and, in particular, to assess if low-to-moderate injury induces a compensatory increase in photosynthesis. Gas exchange and light-adapted fluorescence were measured on non-injured portions of the leaflet lamina adjacent to the injured area as well as on portions of leaflets that included leafminer injury. Results indicate that damage of the photosynthetic apparatus did not extend beyond the injured areas by leafminers. Furthermore, although a strong relationship between the proportion of leafminer injury and area-based net CO2 assimilation rate of injured leaflet tissue was found, there was no evidence that pecan leaves were able to compensate for leafminer injury by upregulating CO2 assimilation in leaflet tissue that was unaffected.

The first total synthesis of the naturally occurring enantiomer of the marine bromoallene (+)-panacene is described. Central to this concise enantioselective synthesis was the use of a Noyori transfer hydrogenation for a Dynamic Kinetic Resolution (DKR) that set the desired absolute stereochemistry. A highly stereoselective Julia coupling was then used to install a Z-configured enyne, which enabled the biomimetic construction of the axially chiral bromoallene.

The dyes extracted from pomegranate and berry fruits were successfully used in the fabrication of natural dye sensitized solar cells (NDSSC). The morphology, porosity, surface roughness, thickness, absorption and emission characteristics of the pomegranate dye sensitized photo-anode were studied using various analytical techniques including FESEM, EDS, TEM, AFM, FTIR, Raman, Fluorescence and Absorption Spectroscopy. Pomegranate dye extract has been shown to contain anthocyanin which is an excellent light harvesting pigment needed for the generation of charge carriers for the production of electricity. The solar cell’s photovoltic performance in terms of efficiency, voltage, and current was tested with a standard illumination of air-mass 1.5 global (AM 1.5 G) having an irradiance of 100 mW/cm2. After optimization of the photo-anode and counter electrode, a photoelectric conversion efficiency (η) of 2%, an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.39 mV, and a short-circuit current density (Isc) of 12.2 mA/cm2 were obtained. Impedance determination showed a relatively low charge-transfer resistance (17.44 Ω) and a long lifetime, signifying a reduction in recombination losses. The relatively enhanced efficiency is attributable in part to the use of a highly concentrated pomegranate dye, graphite counter electrode and TiCl4 treatment of the photo-anode.

Soil salinity management is a factor for successful production of pecan (Carya illinoinensis) in arid southwestern United States. An exploratory study was performed to evaluate the effect of various soil management practices on salt leaching in basin-irrigated orchards developed on alluvial soils (Torrifluvents, Entisols) of the middle Rio Grande Basin. The practices evaluated were ripping, minimum-till chiseling, and soil profile modification. For ripping, parabolic shanks were passed through the center section (4 to 8 ft wide) between each tree row to a depth ranging from 18 to 36 inches. Minimum-till chisels included 7- and 30-inch shanks,equippedwithcoulterstoreducebreakupofthegroundsurface.Soilprofile modification consisted of trenching with a backhoe and profile mixing with a large excavator. The effectiveness of these methods was evaluated by measuring soil salinity and moisture in treated and untreated zones at 17 test sites. Both ripping and minimum-till deep chiseling helped improve salt leaching, and the effectiveness of salt leaching increased as working depths approach the thickness of the clayey layer. However, annual ripping of the center section of each tree row space may not provide wide enough zones to alleviate salt stress to the trees. Straight shanks prune but do not lift tree roots, thus appearing to be better suited for chiseling closer to tree rows. Soil profile modification was highly effective in leaching salts. From the view of minimizing soil aggregate destruction and of maintaining a leveled floor, minimum-till deep chiseling, followed by the use of sand-topdressing and minimum-till shallow chisels for maintenance may prove to be more desirable than conventional ripping, especially in soil types consisting of silty clay loam.

We report the case of a 46-year-old man who initially presented with macroscopic haematuria. Although initially concerning for a malignancy in the bladder, histology demonstrated a primary bladder amyloidosis that has remained stable for 6 years since the initial diagnosis. Primary bladder amyloidosis is an important clinical entity that can mimic bladder malignancy on clinical history, radiological investigation and cystoscopic evaluation. Although uncommon, it should not be neglected as a possible diagnosis in patients presenting with haematuria.

Though development of the coronary vasculature is a critical event during embryogenesis, the molecular mechanisms that regulate its formation are not well characterized. Two unique approaches were used to investigate interactions between cardiac myocytes and proepicardial (PE) cells, which are the coronary anlagen. One of these experimental approaches used a 3-D collagen scaffold system on which specific cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions were studied. The other approach used a whole heart culture system that allowed for the analysis of epicardial to mesenchymal transformation (EMT). The VEGF signaling system has been implicated previously as an important regulator of coronary development. Our results demonstrated that a specific isoform of VEGF-A, VEGF164, increased PE-derived endothelial cell proliferation and also increased EMT. However, VEGF-stimulated endothelial cells did not robustly coalesce into endothelial tubes as they did when cocultured with cardiac myocytes. Interestingly, blocking VEGF signaling via flk-1 inhibition reduced endothelial tube formation despite the presence of cardiac myocytes. These results indicate that VEGF signaling is complex during coronary development and that combinatorial signaling by other VEGF-A isoforms or other flk-1-binding VEGFs are likely to regulate endothelial tube formation. Total phenolics (TPH), flavonoids (TF), monomeric anthocyanins (ACY), and Vitamin C Equivalent Antioxidant Capacities (VCEAC) utilizing ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging assays were determined for five fully ripened blackberries cultivars (‘Loch Ness’, ‘Navaho’, ‘Arapaho’, ‘Apache’, and ‘Triple Crown’) of Rubus spp. grown in Alabama. The ABTS and DPPH methods were highly correlated (R = 0.897) and the ABTS method was better for assessing the overall antioxidant capacity. Cultivar differences were found in TPH, ACY, and VCEAC as determined by the ABTS method (P ≤ 0.05) with ‘Loch Ness’ and ‘Apache’ containing the highest levels. Based on these findings ‘Apache’, ‘Arapaho’, and ‘Navaho’ are three thornless blackberry cultivars that have potential to be used as dietary supplements and for commercial production in Alabama due to high phytonutrient content, antioxidant capacities, and yield.

Six weed control programs with and without irrigation were investigated in a newly established pecan orchard. Irrigation increased crown diameter growth in only one of seven growing seasons but increased nut yield an average of 35% in the first two bearing years. Weed control program significantly influenced crown diameter beginning in the fourth growing season and continued through season six while also impacting final crown diameter. The use of postemergence (POST) herbicides increased crown diameter a minimum 4 mm vs. preemergence (PRE) herbicides. Mowing neither increased nor decreased crown diameter when used with herbicides; however, when used solely, crown diameter was 29% less. Highest growth rates were obtained with a combination PRE plus POST weed management system. Nut yields were closely linked to growth data. No differences in nut yield were observed between PRE- or POST-herbicide programs alone or in combination with mowing. Mowing alone decreased nut yield 57% vs. herbicide-based approaches. A combination PRE- plus POST-weed control program increased yield 38% vs. all other treatments.

Changes in fruit quality attributes and antioxidative properties from six cultivars of thornless blackberries (Rubus sp.) (‘Apache’, ‘Arapaho’, ‘Chester’, ‘Loch Ness’, ‘Navaho’, and ‘Triple Crown’) during four different ripening stages (red, motded, shiny-black, and dull-black) were determined under Alabama growing conditions. Berry fruit samples were evaluated for pH, titratable acidity, total soluble solids, TSS/TA ratio, soluble sugars, vitamin C (reduced, oxidized, and total) and antioxidant capacity (measured as trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, TEAC). Significant variation among cultivars and maturity of harvest were in fruit quality attributes and antioxidative properties found. An increase in fruit pH concomitant with a decline in titratable acidity (TA) was observed during ripening for all cultivars. Coronary vascular disease is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the United States. Therefore, a mechanistic understanding of coronary vessel morphogenesis would aid in the innovation of new therapies targeting vascular disorders. Moreover, a functionally equivalent in vitro model system allows for the delineation of the molecular mechanisms that regulate coronary vessel development. In this study, we present a novel in vitro model system. This three-dimensional (3-D) model system consists of a tubular scaffold, which is engineered from type-I collagen and has been optimized to support the growth of embryonic cardiac tissues. In this report, proepicardial (PE) cells, the developmental precursors of coronary vessels, have been isolated from several model species and cultured on this scaffold. In this model system, the PE cells were able to recapitulate several aspects of coronary vessel morphogenesis including epicardial formation, the epicardial to mesenchymal transformation, and de novo coronary vessel development or vasculogenesis. The differentiation of PE cells was characterized using a variety of specific protein markers. The potential uses of this novel coronary developmental model are discussed.

The rate coefficient has been measured under pseudo-first-order conditions for the Cl+CH3 association reaction at T=202, 250, and 298 K and P=0.3-2.0 Torr helium using the technique of discharge-flow mass spectrometry with low-energy (12-eV) electron-impact ionization and collision-free sampling. Cl and CH3 were generated rapidly and simultaneously by reaction of F with HCl and CH4, respectively. Fluorine atoms were produced by microwave discharge in an approximately 1% mixture of F2 in He. The decay of CH3 was monitored under pseudo-first-order conditions with the Cl-atom concentration in large excess over the CH3 concentration ([Cl]0/[CH3]0=9-67). Small corrections were made for both axial and radial diffusion and minor secondary chemistry. The rate coefficient was found to be in the falloff regime over the range of pressures studied. For example, at T=202 K, the rate coefficient increases from 8.4x10(-12) at P=0.30 Torr He to 1.8x10(-11) at P=2.00 Torr He, both in units of cm3 molecule-1 s-1. A combination of ab initio quantum chemistry, variational transition-state theory, and master-equation simulations was employed in developing a theoretical model for the temperature and pressure dependence of the rate coefficient. Reasonable empirical representations of energy transfer and of the effect of spin-orbit interactions yield a temperature- and pressure-dependent rate coefficient that is in excellent agreement with the present experimental results. The high-pressure limiting rate coefficient from the RRKM calculations is k2=6.0x10(-11) cm3 molecule-1 s-1, independent of temperature in the range from 200 to 300 K.

Background There is a need for data quality assurance procedures in phase III cancer trials. At the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) ‘real-time’ systems have been developed for quality assurance and study monitoring: (1) manual review and triage of data forms by data managers at the time of submission; (2) computerized edit checking of all submitted data forms; (3) systematic review of eligibility, treatment compliance and toxicity in the first 100 patients of a new protocol; (4) prospective centralized medical review of all reported serious adverse events, treatment failures, second primary cancers and deaths; (5) quarterly review and approval of study summary data files by project statistician; and (6) on-site auditing. Purpose To assess the utility of an additional final comprehensive review of all patient records to confirm eligibility, disease status and vital status prior to manuscript submission. Methods Four phase III NSABP studies, which had been monitored using the triagebased quality assurance program described above, were selected for analysis ( n = 7972). Charts for 5965 patients were identified that had not been previously medically reviewed for protocol events of recurrence, second primary cancer or death. Submitted source documents and data forms of these 5965 NSABP patient records underwent medical review to verify patient eligibility, disease status and vital status. Results This final comprehensive review found no additional treatment failures or deaths, identified seven additional cases of ineligibility, was time-intensive requiring enormous use of expensive resources, and was therefore judged not to add significantly to the integrity of the database. Limitations Our findings are influenced by the procedures the NSABP employs for quality assurance and study monitoring for Phase III clinical trials and may have limited generalizability to other settings. Conclusion In the presence of multiple quality assurance and data monitoring systems, the rare discrepancies found between the data forms and source documentation does not support the routine use of a final comprehensive chart review for phase III trials at the NSABP Biostatistical Center.

Development of the epicardium is critical to proper heart formation. It provides all of the precursor cells that form the coronary system and supplies signals that stimulate cardiac myocyte proliferation. The epicardium forms from mesothelial cells associated with the septum transversum and is referred to as the proepicardium (PE). Two different methods by which these PE cells colonize the developing heart have been described. In avians, PE cells form a bridge to the heart over which PE cells migrate onto the heart. In fish and mammals, PE cells form vesicles of cells that detach from the mesothelium, float through the pericardial cavity, and attach to the heart. A previous study of rat PE development investigated this process at the histological level. Protein markers have been developed since this study. Thus, we investigated this important developmental process coupled with these new markers using other visualization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal microscopy. Finally, a novel, three-dimensional (3-D) culture system was used to confirm the identity of the PE cells. In this study, we found convincing evidence that the rat PE cells directly attach to the heart in a manner similar to that observed in avians.

Blackberries are an excellent source of natural antioxidants. Fully ripened fruit of ‘Apache’, ‘Arapaho’, ‘Chester’, ‘Loch Ness’, ‘Navaho’ and ‘Triple Crown’ thornless blackberries were evaluated for their physicochemical and antioxidative activity. There were no consistent differences for variation in initial pH, titratable acidity (TA), total soluble sugar (TSS) and TSS/TA ratio values determined. Differences among cultivars with respect to reduced ascorbic acid (AA) were established, but there were no differences in either oxidized ascorbic acid (DHA) or total ascorbic acid (TAA) content. The antioxidant activity as determined by ABTS radical cation procedure for fractionated crude fruit extracts varied in response to parameters evaluated. Hydrophilic antioxidant activity (HAA) was not different among cultivars evaluated. In contrast, differences were found in lipophilic antioxidant activity (LAA) and total antioxidant activity (TAA).

Valvular defects are among the most common and deleterious of all cardiac malformations. The early cardiac cushions are located in the atrioventricular (AV) canal of the embryonic heart. These cushions contain cells that are the primordia of the cardiac valves and membranous septa. Significant progress has been made in delineating the molecular mechanisms that regulate the early steps of cushion formation; however, little is known about how these cushions differentiate into valve leaflets. Here, a new three-dimensional collagen tube culturing system was tested for its ability to sustain the development and maturation of the AV cushion anlagen. We report that AV cushion tissues grown within the collagen tube scaffold recapitulate aspects of AV valve development both at the molecular and morphological levels. Furthermore, our results indicate that valve leaflet formation in the tube model is dependent on the presence of cardiac myocytes.

The absolute rate constant for the reaction F(2P) with Cl2 has been measured using the discharge flow kinetics technique coupled to mass spectrometric detection at T = 180−360 K and 1 Torr He nominal pressure. Experiments were performed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD, and Laboratoire de Combustion et Systemes Reactifs-CNRS in Orleans, France. Results of k = (5.7 ± 0.8) × 10-11 and (6.2 ± 0.8) × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 independent of temperature were obtained by each laboratory, respectively. When the results from both laboratories were combined into one data set, an average temperature independent value of k1 = (6.0 ± 1.1) × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 was obtained. A very slight positive temperature dependence with k1(T) = (6.5 ± 1.5) × 10-11 exp{−(20 ± 60)/T} cm3 molecule-1 s-1 may also be derived from the combined data in the range T = 180−360 K.
