Abstract

The variational method with constraints recently developed by Verkley and Gerkema to describe maximum-entropy atmospheric profiles is generalized to ideal gases but with temperature-dependent specific heats. In so doing, an extended and non standard potential temperature is introduced that is well suited for tackling the problem under consideration. This new formalism is successfully applied to the atmosphere of Venus. Three well defined regions emerge in this atmosphere up to a height of 100 km from the surface: the lowest one up to about 35 km is adiabatic, a transition layer located at the height of the cloud deck and finally a third region which is practically isothermal.

Abstract

The performance of the Auger Fluorescence telescope is discussed on the basis of a mass production chain. In order to get a realistic estimate of the detector resolution, a large number of fully simulated CORSIKA showers have been used for this study. The propagation through the atmosphere and the detector response are taken into account and simulated in detail. Results for the the case of monocular reconstruction are presented here. No quality cuts for the event reconstruction have been applied so far. Finally, a schematic overview of the expected event topologies is given together with the display of a real event recently collected.

Abstract

Nuclear effects in the small x region of hadron-nucleus Drell-Yan processes at 800 GeV are analyzed. We employ the parton recombination model to describe the suppression in the R f&„(x2} ratio and we compare it with Rz«(x), in the same kinematical region. Our results show that shadowing effects in Drell-Yan and deep inelastic scattering processes admit a description based on this model in both cases but with different characteristic parameters. Abstract

The hadron‐nucleus J/Ψ production is analyxed in a phenomenological picture, considering the parton recombination model. There is an evidence for a nuclear suppression effect, besides shadowing and we obtain good agreement with experimental data.

Dirichlet problems posed by boundaries with a symmetry CN are studied via 1/N expansion. The characteristic impedance of a coaxial system consisting of a regular polygon concentric with a circle is explicitly computed as a typical application of the method.

Abstract

Construction of the first stage of the Pierre Auger Observatory has begun. The aim of the Observatory is to collect unprecedented information about cosmic rays above 10^18 eV. The first phase of the project, the construction and operation of a prototype system, known as the engineering array, has now been completed. It has allowed all of the sub-systems that will be used in the full instrument to be tested under field conditions.
