The microgrid enhances power grid reliability, resiliency, and sustainability, particularly in rural and islanded areas with limited manual network management. However, microgrid energy management systems (EMS), especially in islanded mode, require precise and reliable techniques to prevent severe blackouts/brownouts. This paper presents a novel deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm to schedule EMS for the autonomous microgrid in real-time. Our solution utilizes deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to converge model-free, sequential, random, and continuous characteristics of the microgrid. Additionally, we use reward shaping and transfer learning attachment to DDPG to support microgrid performance restrictions and minimize load shedding during peak hours. This solution offers an efficient training process comparable to other DRL techniques in simplicity, less computation, and supporting future system extension. Residential Gasa Island microgrid profile characteristics have been selected and tested to examine the proposed approach. Results demonstrate the high efficiency and accuracy of the proposed technique compared to existing methods.

The recognition of fire at its early stages and stopping it from causing socioeconomic and environmental disasters remains a demanding task. Despite the availability of convincing networks, there is a need to develop a lightweight network for resource-constraint devices rather than real-time fire detection in smart city contexts. To overcome this shortcoming, we presented a novel efficient lightweight network called FlameNet for fire detection in a smart city environment. Our proposed network works via two main steps: first, it detects the fire using the FlameNet; then, an alert is initiated and directed to the fire, medical, and rescue departments. Furthermore, we incorporate the MSA module to efficiently prioritize and enhance relevant fire-related prominent features for effective fire detection. The newly developed Ignited-Flames dataset is utilized to undertake a thorough analysis of several convolutional neural network (CNN) models. Additionally, the proposed FlameNet achieves 99.40% accuracy for fire detection. The empirical findings and analysis of multiple factors such as model accuracy, size, and processing time prove that the suggested model is suitable for fire detection.

Traditional phenotyping relies on experts visually examining plants for physical traits like size, color, or disease presence. Measurements are taken manually using rulers, scales, or color charts, with all data recorded by hand. This labor-intensive and time-consuming process poses a significant obstacle to the efficient breeding of new cultivars. Recent innovations in computer vision and machine learning offer potential solutions for accelerating the development of robust and highly effective plant phenotyping. This study introduces an efficient plant recognition framework that leverages the power of the Segment Anything Model (SAM) guided by Explainable Contrastive Language–Image Pretraining (ECLIP). This approach can be applied to a variety of plant types, eliminating the need for labor-intensive manual phenotyping. To enhance the accuracy of plant phenotype measurements, a B-spline curve is incorporated during the plant component skeleton extraction process. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated through experimental results, which show that the proposed framework achieves a mean absolute error (MAE) of less than 0.05 for the majority of test samples. Remarkably, this performance is achieved without the need for model training or labeled data, highlighting the practicality and efficiency of the framework.

Remote sensing stands as a fundamental technique in contemporary environmental monitoring, facilitating extensive data collection and offering invaluable insights into the dynamic nature of the Earth’s surface. The advent of deep learning, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has further revolutionized this domain by enhancing scene understanding. However, despite the advancements, traditional CNN methodologies face challenges such as overfitting in imbalanced datasets and a lack of precise uncertainty quantification, crucial for extracting meaningful insights and enhancing the precision of remote sensing techniques. Addressing these critical issues, this study introduces BayesNet, a Bayesian neural network (BNN)-driven CNN model designed to normalize and estimate uncertainties, particularly aleatoric and epistemic, in remote sensing datasets. BayesNet integrates a novel channel–spatial attention module to refine feature extraction processes in remote sensing imagery, thereby ensuring a robust analysis of complex scenes. BayesNet was trained on four widely recognized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing datasets, UCM21, RSSCN7, AID, and NWPU, and demonstrated good performance, achieving accuracies of 99.99%, 97.30%, 97.57%, and 95.44%, respectively. Notably, it has showcased superior performance over existing models in the AID, NWPU, and UCM21 datasets, with enhancements of 0.03%, 0.54%, and 0.23%, respectively. This improvement is significant in the context of complex scene classification of remote sensing images, where even slight improvements mark substantial progress against complex and highly optimized benchmarks. Moreover, a self-prepared remote sensing testing dataset is also introduced to test BayesNet against unseen data, and it achieved an accuracy of 96.39%, which showcases the effectiveness of the BayesNet in scene classification tasks.

Abstract Heat networks play a vital role in the energy sector by offering thermal energy to residents in certain countries. Effective management and optimization of heat networks require a deep understanding of users' heat usage patterns. Irregular patterns, such as peak usage periods, can exceed the design capacities of the system. However, previous work has mostly neglected the analysis of heat usage profiles or performed on a small scale. To close the gap, this study proposes a data-driven approach to analyze and predict heat load in a district heating network. The study uses data from over eight heating seasons of a cogeneration DH plant in Cheongju, Korea, to build analysis and forecast models using supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms, including support vector regression (SVR), boosting algorithms, and multilayer perceptron (MLP). The models take weather data, holiday information, and historical hourly heat load as input variables. The performance of these algorithms is compared using different training sample sizes of the dataset. The results show that boosting algorithms, particularly XGBoost, are more suitable ML algorithms with lower prediction errors than SVR and MLP. Finally, different explainable artificial intelligence approaches are applied to provide an in-depth interpretation of the trained model and the importance of input variables.

Land-area classification (LAC) research offers a promising avenue to address the intricacies of urban planning, agricultural zoning, and environmental monitoring, with a specific focus on urban areas and their complex land usage patterns. The potential of LAC research is significantly propelled by advancements in high-resolution satellite imagery and machine learning strategies, particularly the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Accurate LAC is paramount for informed urban development and effective land management. Traditional remote-sensing methods encounter limitations in precisely classifying dynamic and complex urban land areas. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the application of transfer learning with Inception-v3 and DenseNet121 architectures to establish a reliable LAC system for identifying urban land use classes. Leveraging transfer learning with these models provided distinct advantages, as it allows the LAC system to benefit from pre-trained features on large datasets, enhancing model generalization and performance compared to starting from scratch. Transfer learning also facilitates the effective utilization of limited labeled data for fine-tuning, making it a valuable strategy for optimizing model accuracy in complex urban land classification tasks. Moreover, we strategically employ fine-tuned versions of Inception-v3 and DenseNet121 networks, emphasizing the transformative impact of these architectures. The fine-tuning process enables the model to leverage pre-existing knowledge from extensive datasets, enhancing its adaptability to the intricacies of LC classification. By aligning with these advanced techniques, our research not only contributes to the evolution of remote-sensing methodologies but also underscores the paramount importance of incorporating cutting-edge methodologies, such as fine-tuning and the use of specific network architectures, in the continual enhancement of LC classification systems. Through experiments conducted on the UC-Merced_LandUse dataset, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, achieving remarkable results, including 92% accuracy, 93% recall, 92% precision, and a 92% F1-score. Moreover, employing heatmap analysis further elucidates the decision-making process of the models, providing insights into the classification mechanism. The successful application of CNNs in LAC, coupled with heatmap analysis, opens promising avenues for enhanced urban planning, agricultural zoning, and environmental monitoring through more accurate and automated land-area classification.

Our research focuses on addressing the challenge of crop diseases and pest infestations in agriculture by utilizing UAV technology for improved crop monitoring through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and enhancing the detection and classification of agricultural pests. Traditional approaches often require arduous manual feature extraction or computationally demanding deep learning (DL) techniques. To address this, we introduce an optimized model tailored specifically for UAV-based applications. Our alterations to the YOLOv5s model, which include advanced attention modules, expanded cross-stage partial network (CSP) modules, and refined multiscale feature extraction mechanisms, enable precise pest detection and classification. Inspired by the efficiency and versatility of UAVs, our study strives to revolutionize pest management in sustainable agriculture while also detecting and preventing crop diseases. We conducted rigorous testing on a medium-scale dataset, identifying five agricultural pests, namely ants, grasshoppers, palm weevils, shield bugs, and wasps. Our comprehensive experimental analysis showcases superior performance compared to various YOLOv5 model versions. The proposed model obtained higher performance, with an average precision of 96.0%, an average recall of 93.0%, and a mean average precision (mAP) of 95.0%. Furthermore, the inherent capabilities of UAVs, combined with the YOLOv5s model tested here, could offer a reliable solution for real-time pest detection, demonstrating significant potential to optimize and improve agricultural production within a drone-centric ecosystem.

Bioinformatics and genomics are driving a healthcare revolution, particularly in the domain of drug discovery for anticancer peptides (ACPs). The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed healthcare, enabling personalized and immersive patient care experiences. These advanced technologies, coupled with the power of bioinformatics and genomic data, facilitate groundbreaking developments. The precise prediction of ACPs from complex biological sequences remains an ongoing challenge in the genomic area. Currently, conventional approaches such as chemotherapy, target therapy, radiotherapy, and surgery are widely used for cancer treatment. However, these methods fail to completely eradicate neoplastic cells or cancer stem cells and damage healthy tissues, resulting in morbidity and even mortality. To control such diseases, oncologists and drug designers highly desire to develop new preventive techniques with more efficiency and minor side effects. Therefore, this research provides an optimized computational-based framework for discriminating against ACPs. In addition, the proposed approach intelligently integrates four peptide encoding methods, namely amino acid occurrence analysis (AAOA), dipeptide occurrence analysis (DOA), tripeptide occurrence analysis (TOA), and enhanced pseudo amino acid composition (EPseAAC). To overcome the issue of bias and reduce true error, the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) is applied to balance the samples against each class. The empirical results over two datasets, where the accuracy of the proposed model on the benchmark dataset is 97.56% and on the independent dataset is 95.00%, verify the effectiveness of our ensemble learning mechanism and show remarkable performance when compared with state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. In addition, the application of metaverse technology in healthcare holds promise for transformative innovations, potentially enhancing patient experiences and providing novel solutions in the realm of preventive techniques and patient care.

Sustaining global food security amid a growing world population demands advanced breeding methods. Phenotyping, which observes and measures physical traits, is a vital component of agricultural research. However, its labor-intensive nature has long hindered progress. In response, we present an efficient phenotyping platform tailored specifically for cucumbers, harnessing smartphone cameras for both cost-effectiveness and accessibility. We employ state-of-the-art computer vision models for zero-shot cucumber phenotyping and introduce a B-spline curve as a medial axis to enhance measurement accuracy. Our proposed method excels in predicting sample lengths, achieving an impressive mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 2.20%, without the need for extensive data labeling or model training.

The need for reliable wireless communication in remote areas has led to the adoption of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as flying base stations (FlyBSs). FlyBSs hover over a designated area to ensure continuous communication coverage for mobile users on the ground. Moreover, rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has emerged as a promising interference management scheme in multi-user communication systems. In this paper, we investigate an RSMA-enhanced FlyBS downlink communication system and formulate an optimization problem to maximize the sum-rate of users, taking into account the three-dimensional FlyBS trajectory and RSMA parameters. To address this continuous non-convex optimization problem, we propose a TD3-RFBS optimization framework based on the twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3). This framework overcomes the limitations associated with the overestimation issue encountered in the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), a well-known deep reinforcement learning method. Our simulation results demonstrate that TD3-RFBS outperforms existing solutions for FlyBS downlink communication systems, indicating its potential as a solution for future wireless networks.

Abstract Heat usage patterns, which are greatly affected by the users' behaviors, network performances, and control logic, are a crucial indicator of the effective and efficient management of district heating networks. The variations in the heat load can be daily or seasonal. The daily variations are primarily influenced by the customers' social behaviors, whereas the seasonal variations are mainly caused by the large temperature differences between the seasons over the year. Irregular heat load patterns can significantly raise costs due to pricey peak fuels and increased peak heat load capacities. The in-depth analyses of heat load profiles are regrettably quite rare and small-scale up until now. Therefore, this study offers a comprehensive investigation of a district heating network operation in order to exploit the major features of the heat usage patterns and discover the big factors that affect the heat load patterns. In addition, this study also provides detailed explanations of the features that can be considered the main drivers of the users' heat load demand. Finally, two primary daily heat usage patterns are extracted, which are exploited to efficiently train the prediction model.

Pumpkins are a nutritious and globally enjoyed fruit for their rich and earthy flavor. The biophysical properties of pumpkins play an important role in determining their yield. However, manual in-field techniques for monitoring these properties can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. To address this, this research introduces a novel approach that feeds high-resolution pumpkin images to train a mathematical model to automate the measurement of each pumpkin’s biophysical properties. Color correction was performed on the dataset using a color-checker panel to minimize the impact of varying light conditions on the RGB images. A segmentation model was then trained to effectively recognize two fundamental components of each pumpkin: the fruit and vine. Real-life measurements of various biophysical properties, including fruit length, fruit width, stem length, stem width and fruit peel color, were computed and compared with manual measurements. The experimental results on 10 different pumpkin samples revealed that the framework obtained a small average mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 2.5% compared to the manual method, highlighting the potential of this approach as a faster and more efficient alternative to conventional techniques for monitoring the biophysical properties of pumpkins.

Currently, object detection on remote sensing images has drawn significant attention due to its extensive applications, including environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster assessment. However, detecting objects in the aerial images captured by remote sensors presents unique challenges compared to natural images, such as low resolution, complex backgrounds, and variations in scale and angle. Prior object detection algorithms are limited in their ability to identify oriented small objects, especially in aerial images where small objects are usually obscured by background noise. To address the above limitations, a novel framework (ORCNN-X) was proposed for oriented small object detection in remote sensing images by improving the Oriented RCNN. The framework adopts a multiscale feature extraction network (ResNeSt+) with a dynamic attention module (DCSA) and an effective feature fusion mechanism (W-PAFPN) to enhance the model’s perception ability and handle variations in scale and angle. The proposed framework is evaluated based on two public benchmark datasets, DOTA and HRSC2016. The experiments demonstrate its state-of-the-art performance in aspects of detection accuracy and speed. The presented model can also represent more objective spatial location information according to the feature visualization maps. Specifically, our model outperforms the baseline model by 1.43% mAP50 and 1.37% mAP12 on DOTA and HRSC2016 datasets, respectively.

White radish is a nutritious and delectable vegetable that is enjoyed globally. Conventional techniques for monitoring radish growth are arduous and time-consuming, encouraging the development of novel methods for quicker measurements and greater sampling density. This research introduces a mathematical model working on high-resolution images to measure radish’s biophysical properties automatically. A color calibration was performed on the dataset using a color checker panel to minimize the impact of varying light conditions on the RGB images. Subsequently, a Mask-RCNN model was trained to effectively segment different components of the radishes. The observations of the segmented results included leaf length, leaf width, root width, root length, leaf length to width, root length to width, root shoulder color, and root peel color. The automated real-life measurements of these observations were then conducted and compared with actual results. The validation results, based on a set of white radish samples, demonstrated the models’ effectiveness in utilizing images for quantifying phenotypic traits. The average accuracy of the automated method was confirmed to be 96.2% when compared to the manual method.

Sewerage systems play a vital role in building modern cities, providing appropriate ways to release liquid wastes. Due to the rapid expansion of cities, the deterioration of sewage pipes are increasing. Hence, systematic maintenance methods are require to overcome this problem. In most cases, sewer inspection is done by human inspectors, which is error-prone, time-consuming, costly, and lacking appropriate survey evaluations. In this paper, we introduce a new automated framework for detecting sewage pipe defects based on the attention mechanism, improved YOLOv5 architecture, and location information recognition from CCTV videos. The main contributions include (1) the addition of a micro-scale detection feature in the layers to improve the defect detection mechanism; (2) the application of a convolutional block attention module for better channel/spatial features; (3) construction of a larger defect-detection dataset for the 12 most common defect types; and (4) implementation of the TPS-ResNet-BiLSTM-Attn (TRBA) model for the text-information recognition mechanism from CCTV videos. The experimental results show that the proposed real-time sewer defect detection model achieved the mean average precision (mAP) of 75.9% on the proposed dataset, outperforming other standard models, such as YOLO and SSD.

The conventional heatmap regression with deep networks has become one of the mainstream approaches for landmark detection. Despite their success, these methods do not exploit the overall landmarks structure. We present a new landmark detection which is capable to capture the overall structure of landmarks by modeling these landmarks as a graph structure. Our method combines a deep heatmap regression network with Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) into an end-to-end differentiable model. The proposed method can utilize both visual information and overall landmarks structure to localize landmarks from an image. The ad hoc spatial relationships between landmarks are learned naturally with GCN network. Experiments on multiple datasets show the robustness of the proposed method.

Growth factors affect farm owners, environmental conditions, nutrient adaptation, and resistance to chrysanthemum diseases. Healthy chrysanthemum plants can overcome all these factors and provide farms owners with a lot of income. Chrysanthemum white rust disease is a common disease that occurs worldwide; if not treated promptly, the disease spreads to the entire leaf surface, causing the plant’s leaves to burn, turn yellow, and fall prematurely, reducing the photosynthetic performance of the plant and the appearance of the flower branches. In Korea, chrysanthemum white rust disease most often occurs during the spring and autumn seasons, when temperature varies during the summer monsoon, and when ventilation is poor in the winter. Deep neural networks were used to determine healthy and unhealthy plants. We applied the Raspberry Pi 3 module to recognize white rust and test four neural network models. The five main deep neural network processes utilized for a dataset of non-diseased and white rust leaves include: (1) data collection; (2) data partitioning; (3) feature extraction; (4) feature engineering; and (5) prediction modeling based on the train–test loss of 35 epochs within 20 min using Linux. White rust recognition is performed for comparison using four models, namely, DenseNet-121, ResNet-50, VGG-19, and MobileNet v2. The qualitative white rust detection system is achieved using a Raspberry Pi 3 module. All models accomplished an accuracy of over 94%, and MobileNet v2 achieved the highest accuracy, precision, and recall at over 98%. In the precision comparison, DenseNet-121 obtained the second highest recognition accuracy of 97%, whereas ResNet-50 and VGG-19 achieved slightly lower accuracies at 95% and 94%, respectively. Qualitative results were obtained using the Raspberry Pi 3 module to assess the performance of the seven models. All models had accuracies of over 91%, with ResNet-50 obtaining a value of 91%, VGG-19 reaching a value of 93%, DenseNet-121 reaching 95%, SqueezeNet obtaining over 95%, MobileNet obtaining over 96%, and MobileNetv2-YOLOv3 reaching 92%. The highest accuracy rate was 97% (MobileNet v2). MobileNet v2 was validated as the most effective model to recognize white rust in chrysanthemums using the Raspberry Pi 3 system. Raspberry Pi 3 module was considered, in conjunction with the MobileNet v2 model, to be the best application system. MobileNet v2 and Raspberry Pi require a low cost for the recognition of chrysanthemum white rust and the diagnosis of chrysanthemum plant health conditions, reducing the risk of white rust disease and minimizing costs and efforts while improving floral production. Chrysanthemum farmers should consider applying the Raspberry Pi module for detecting white rust, protecting healthy plant growth, and increasing yields with low-cost.

Wild chrysanthemums mainly present germplasm collections such as leaf multiform, flower color, aroma, and secondary compounds. Wild chrysanthemum leaf identification is critical for farm owners, breeders, and researchers with or without the flowering period. However, few chrysanthemum identification studies are related to flower color recognition. This study contributes to the leaf classification method by rapidly recognizing the varieties of wild chrysanthemums through a support vector machine (SVM). The principal contributions of this article are: (1) an assembled collection method and verified chrysanthemum leaf dataset that has been achieved and improved; (2) an adjusted SVM model that is offered to deal with the complex backgrounds presented by smartphone pictures by using color and shape classification results to be more attractive than the original process. As our study presents, the proposed method has a viable application in real-picture smartphones and can help to further investigate chrysanthemum identification.

As a key technology of intelligent transportation system, the intelligent vehicle is the carrier of comprehensive integration of many technologies. Although vision-based autonomous driving has shown excellent prospects, there is still a problem of how to analyze the complicated traffic situation by the collected data. Recently, autonomous driving has been formulated as many tasks separately by using different models, such as object detection task and intention recognition task. In this study, a vision-based system was developed to detect and identity various objects and predict the intention of pedestrians in the traffic scene. The main contributions of this research are (1) an optimized model was presented to detect 10 kinds of objects based on the structure of YOLOv4; (2) a fine-tuned Part Affinity Fields approach was proposed to estimate the pose of pedestrians; (3) Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) technology is added to explain and assist the estimation results in the risk assessment phase; (4) an elaborate self-driving dataset that includes several different subsets for each corresponding task was introduced; and (5) an end-to-end system containing multiple models with high accuracy was developed. Experimental results proved that the total parameters of optimized YOLOv4 are reduced by 74%, which satisfies the real-time capability. In addition, the detection precision of the optimized YOLOv4 achieved an improvement of 2.6% compared to the state-of-the-art.

Isotropic ultra-thin shells or membranes, as well as cable–membrane structures, cannot resist loads at the initial state and always require a form-finding process to reach the steady state. After this stage, they can work in a pure membrane state and quickly experience large deflection behavior, even with a small amplitude of load. This paper aims to improve the load-carrying capacity and strength of membrane structures via exploiting the advantages of functionally graded carbon-nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) material. In this work, the load-carrying capacity and nonlinear behavior of membrane structures with and without CNTs reinforcement are first investigated using a unified adaptive approach (UAA). As an advantage of UAA, both form finding and postbuckling analysis are performed conveniently and simultaneously based on a modified Riks method. Different from the classical membrane theory, the present theory (first-order shear deformation theory) simultaneously takes into account the membrane, shear and bending strains/stiffnesses of structures. Accordingly, the present formulation can be applied adaptively and naturally to various types of FG-CNTRC structures: plates, shells and membranes. A verification study is conducted to show the high accuracy of the present approach and formulation. Effects of CNTs distribution, volume fraction, thickness, curvature, radius-to-thickness and length-to-radius ratios on the form-finding and postbuckling behavior of FG-CNTRC membranes are particularly investigated. In particular, equilibrium paths of FG-CNTRC membrane structures are first provided in this paper.

Due to the advantages of economics, safety, and efficiency, vision-based analysis techniques have recently gained conspicuous advancements, enabling them to be extensively applied for autonomous constructions. Although numerous studies regarding the defect inspection and condition assessment in underground sewer pipelines have presently emerged, we still lack a thorough and comprehensive survey of the latest developments. This survey presents a systematical taxonomy of diverse sewer inspection algorithms, which are sorted into three categories that include defect classification, defect detection, and defect segmentation. After reviewing the related sewer defect inspection studies for the past 22 years, the main research trends are organized and discussed in detail according to the proposed technical taxonomy. In addition, different datasets and the evaluation metrics used in the cited literature are described and explained. Furthermore, the performances of the state-of-the-art methods are reported from the aspects of processing accuracy and speed.

Object tracking is a fundamental computer vision problem that refers to a set of methods proposed to precisely track the motion trajectory of an object in a video. Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) is a subclass of object tracking that has received growing interest due to its academic and commercial potential. Although numerous methods have been introduced to cope with this problem, many challenges remain to be solved, such as severe object occlusion and abrupt appearance changes. This paper focuses on giving a thorough review of the evolution of MOT in recent decades, investigating the recent advances in MOT, and showing some potential directions for future work. The primary contributions include: (1) a detailed description of the MOT’s main problems and solutions, (2) a categorization of the previous MOT algorithms into 12 approaches and discussion of the main procedures for each category, (3) a review of the benchmark datasets and standard evaluation methods for evaluating the MOT, (4) a discussion of various MOT challenges and solutions by analyzing the related references, and (5) a summary of the latest MOT technologies and recent MOT trends using the mentioned MOT categories.

The radish is a delicious, healthy vegetable and an important ingredient to many side dishes and main recipes. However, climate change, pollinator decline, and especially Fusarium wilt cause a significant reduction in the cultivation area and the quality of the radish yield. Previous studies on plant disease identification have relied heavily on extracting features manually from images, which is time-consuming and inefficient. In addition to Red-Green-Blue (RGB) images, the development of near-infrared (NIR) sensors has enabled a more effective way to monitor the diseases and evaluate plant health based on multispectral imagery. Thus, this study compares two distinct approaches in detecting radish wilt using RGB images and NIR images taken by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The main research contributions include (1) a high-resolution RGB and NIR radish field dataset captured by drone from low to high altitudes, which can serve several research purposes; (2) implementation of a superpixel segmentation method to segment captured radish field images into separated segments; (3) a customized deep learning-based radish identification framework for the extracted segmented images, which achieved remarkable performance in terms of accuracy and robustness with the highest accuracy of 96%; (4) the proposal for a disease severity analysis that can detect different stages of the wilt disease; (5) showing that the approach based on NIR images is more straightforward and effective in detecting wilt disease than the learning approach based on the RGB dataset.

Image forgery is an active topic in digital image tampering that is performed by moving a region from one image into another image, combining two images to form one image, or retouching an image. Moreover, recent developments of generative adversarial networks (GANs) that are used to generate human facial images have made it more challenging for even humans to detect the tampered one. The spread of those images on the internet can cause severe ethical, moral, and legal issues if the manipulated images are misused. As a result, much research has been conducted to detect facial image manipulation based on applying machine learning algorithms on tampered face datasets in the last few years. This paper introduces a deep learning-based framework that can identify manipulated facial images and GAN-generated images. It is comprised of multiple convolutional layers, which can efficiently extract features using multi-level abstraction from tampered regions. In addition, a data-based approach, cost-sensitive learning-based approach (class weight), and ensemble-based approach (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) is applied to the proposed model to deal with the imbalanced data problem (IDP). The superiority of the proposed model that deals with an IDP is verified using a tampered face dataset and a GAN-generated face dataset under various scenarios. Experimental results proved that the proposed framework outperformed existing expert systems, which has been used for identifying manipulated facial images and GAN-generated images in terms of computational complexity, area under the curve (AUC), and robustness. As a result, the proposed framework inspires the development of research on image forgery identification and enables the potential to integrate these models into practical applications, which require tampered facial image detection.

The fast development of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology in recent years has supported connections of numerous smart things along with sensors and established seamless data exchange between them, so it leads to a stringy requirement for data analysis and data storage platform such as cloud computing and fog computing. Healthcare is one of the application domains in IoT that draws enormous interest from industry, the research community, and the public sector. The development of IoT and cloud computing is improving patient safety, staff satisfaction, and operational efficiency in the medical industry. This survey is conducted to analyze the latest IoT components, applications, and market trends of IoT in healthcare, as well as study current development in IoT and cloud computing-based healthcare applications since 2015. We also consider how promising technologies such as cloud computing, ambient assisted living, big data, and wearables are being applied in the healthcare industry and discover various IoT, e-health regulations and policies worldwide to determine how they assist the sustainable development of IoT and cloud computing in the healthcare industry. Moreover, an in-depth review of IoT privacy and security issues, including potential threats, attack types, and security setups from a healthcare viewpoint is conducted. Finally, this paper analyzes previous well-known security models to deal with security risks and provides trends, highlighted opportunities, and challenges for the IoT-based healthcare future development.

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) describe an emerging generative model which has made impressive progress in the last few years in generating photorealistic facial images. As the result, it has become more and more difficult to differentiate between computer-generated and real face images, even with the human’s eyes. If the generated images are used with the intent to mislead and deceive readers, it would probably cause severe ethical, moral, and legal issues. Moreover, it is challenging to collect a dataset for computer-generated face identification that is large enough for research purposes because the number of realistic computer-generated images is still limited and scattered on the internet. Thus, a development of a novel decision support system for analyzing and detecting computer-generated face images generated by the GAN network is crucial. In this paper, we propose a customized convolutional neural network, namely CGFace, which is specifically designed for the computer-generated face detection task by customizing the number of convolutional layers, so it performs well in detecting computer-generated face images. After that, an imbalanced framework (IF-CGFace) is created by altering CGFace’s layer structure to adjust to the imbalanced data issue by extracting features from CGFace layers and use them to train AdaBoost and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB). Next, we explain the process of generating a large computer-generated dataset based on the state-of-the-art PCGAN and BEGAN model. Then, various experiments are carried out to show that the proposed model with augmented input yields the highest accuracy at 98%. Finally, we provided comparative results by applying the proposed CNN architecture on images generated by other GAN researches.
