Abstract: Abstract The DUNE far detector has been designed to detect photons and electrons generated by the charged products of the interaction of neutrinos with a massive liquid argon (LAr) target. The photon detection system (PDS) of the first DUNE far detector (FD1) is composed of 6000 photon detection units, named X-ARAPUCA. The detection of the prompt light pulse generated by the particle energy release in LAr will complement and boost the DUNE LAr Time Projection Chamber. It will improve the non-beam events tagging and enable at low energies the trigger and the calorimetry of the supernova neutrinos. The X-ARAPUCA is an assembly of several components. Its photon detection efficiency (PDE) depends on the design of the assembly, on the grade of the individual components and on their coupling. The X-ARAPUCA PDE is one of the leading parameters for the PDS sensitivity, that in turn determines the sensitivity of the DUNE for the detection of core-collapse supernova within the galaxy and for nucleon decay searches. In this work we present the final assessment of the absolute PDE of the FD1 X-ARAPUCA baseline design, measured in two laboratories with independent methods and setups. Preliminary results were reported in Palomares (JINST 18(02):C02064, https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-0221/18/02/C02064 , 2023). One hundred sixty units of these X-ARAPUCA devices have been deployed in the NP04 facility at the CERN Neutrino Platform, the 1:20 scale FD1 prototype, and will be operated during the year 2024. The assessed value of the PDE is a key parameter both in the NP04 and in the DUNE analysis and reconstruction studies.

Abstract: The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. We also report argon purity and detector uniformity measurements and provide comparisons to detector simulations.

Abstract: Abstract The ENUBET project is aimed at designing and experimentally demonstrating the concept of monitored neutrino beams. These novel beams are enhanced by an instrumented decay tunnel, whose detectors reconstruct large-angle charged leptons produced in the tunnel and give a direct estimate of the neutrino flux at the source. These facilities are thus the ideal tool for high-precision neutrino cross-section measurements at the GeV scale because they offer superior control of beam systematics with respect to existing facilities. In this paper, we present the first end-to-end design of a monitored neutrino beam capable of monitoring lepton production at the single particle level. This goal is achieved by a new focusing system without magnetic horns, a 20 m normal-conducting transfer line for charge and momentum selection, and a 40 m tunnel instrumented with cost-effective particle detectors. Employing such a design, we show that percent precision in cross-section measurements can be achieved at the CERN SPS complex with existing neutrino detectors.

Abstract: The ENUBET project intends to reduce the flux related systematics in an accelerator neutrino beam to the 1% level by monitoring associated charged leptons produced in a narrow band meson beam. Large angle leptons from kaon decays are measured in an instrumented decay tunnel, while low angle muons from pions can be monitored after the hadron dump. A key element of the project is the design of a meson transfer line with conventional magnets that maximizes the yield of K+ and π+, while minimizing the total length to reduce meson decays in the not instrumented region. The transfer line is optimized for 8.5 GeV/c mesons with a momentum bite of 5-10%, considering various proton drivers and target designs and it is based on conventional quadrupoles and dipoles and provides a large bending angle that can ensure a reduced background from the untagged neutrino component at the neutrino detector. The ENUBET Collaboration presented at NuFact2021 the latest design of the hadron beam line, the performance of the positron tagger prototypes tested at CERN beamlines, a full simulation of the positron reconstruction chain and the expected physics reach.

Abstract: The ENUBET ERC project, also included in the CERN Neutrino Platform as NP06/ENUBET, is developing a new neutrino beam based on conventional techniques in which the flux and the flavor composition are known with unprecedented precision (O (1%)). Such a goal is accomplished monitoring the associated charged leptons produced in the decay region of the ENUBET facility. Positrons and muons from kaon decays are measured by a segmented calorimeter instrumenting the walls of the decay tunnel, while muon stations after the hadron dump can be used to monitor the neutrino component from pion decays. Furthermore, the narrow momentum width (O (10%)) of the neutrino energy on an event by event basis, thanks to its correlation with the radial position of the interaction at the neutrino detector. ENUBET is therefore an ideal facility for a high precision neutrino cross-section measurement at the GeV scale, that could enhance the discovery potential of the next-generation of long baseline experiments. It is also a powerful tool for testing the sterile neutrino hypothesis and to investigate possible non-standard interactions.

Abstract: A prototype for the instrumented decay tunnel of ENUBET was tested in 2018 at the CERN East Area facility with charged particles up to 5 GeV. This detector is a longitudinal sampling calorimeter with lateral scintillation light readout. The calorimeter was equipped by an additional "$t_0$-layer" for timing and photon discrimination. The performance of this detector in terms of electron energy resolution, linearity, response to muons and hadron showers are presented in this paper and compared with simulation. The $t_0$-layer was studied both in standalone mode using pion charge exchange and in combined mode with the calorimeter to assess the light yield and the 1 mip/2 mip separation capability. Abstract: The goal of the ENUBET project is to demonstrate that a precision of ∼ 1 % on measurement of the absolute neutrino cross section at GeV scale can be achieved by monitoring the positron production in the decay tunnel coming from the three-body semileptonic decays of kaons. The baseline option for the tunnel instrumentation employs a fine-grained shashlik calorimeter with a 4.3 X0 longitudinal segmentation to separate positrons and pions coming from other decay modes of kaons. The system is complemented by rings of plastic scintillator doublets below the calorimeter acting as a photon veto to suppress the π 0 background and to provide timing informations. SiPMs instrumenting the detector will be exposed to sizeble amounts of neutrons arising in hadronic showers. In order to reproduce such a working environment, SiPMs with different cell size (from 12 to 20 μ m ) were irradiated at the INFN-LNL CN Van Der Graaf with neutron fluences up to 2 × 10 11 n/cm2 (1 MeV-eq.). The exposed light sensors were characterized in terms of I–V curves at different irradiation levels, and their response tested by exposing a prototype on beam at CERN. In this contribution we will report the results of the described tests on SiPMs, together with the advances in their integration with the ENUBET detectors.

Abstract: The knowledge of the initial flux, energy and flavor of current neutrino beams is the main limitation for a precise measurement of neutrino cross-sections. The ENUBET ERC project is studying a facility based on a narrow-band neutrino beam capable of constraining the neutrino fluxes normalization through the monitoring of the associated charged leptons in an instrumented decay tunnel. In ENUBET, the identification of large-angle positrons from [Formula: see text] decays at single particle level can potentially reduce the [Formula: see text] flux uncertainty at the level of 1%. This setup would allow for an unprecedented measurement of the [Formula: see text] cross-section at the GeV scale. This input would be highly beneficial to reduce the budget of systematic uncertainties in the next long baseline oscillation projects. Furthermore, in narrow-band beams, the transverse position of the neutrino interaction at the detector can be exploited to determine a priori with significant precision the neutrino energy spectrum without relying on the final state reconstruction. This contribution will present the advances in the design and simulation of the hadronic beam line. Special emphasis will be given to a static focusing system of secondary mesons that can be coupled to a slow extraction proton scheme. The consequent reduction of particle rates and pile-up effects makes the determination of the [Formula: see text] flux through a direct monitoring of muons after the hadron dump viable, and paves the way to a time-tagged neutrino beam. Time-coincidences among the lepton at the source and the neutrino at the detector would enable an unprecedented purity and the possibility to reconstruct the neutrino kinematics at source on an event-by-event basis. We will also present the performance of positron tagger prototypes tested at CERN beamlines, a full simulation of the positron reconstruction chain and the expected physics reach of ENUBET.

Abstract: The uncertainty in the initial neutrino flux is the main limitation for a precise determination of the absolute neutrino cross section. The ERC funded ENUBET project (2016-2021) is studying a facility based on a narrow band beam to produce an intense source of electron neutrinos with a ten-fold improvement in accuracy. Since March 2019 ENUBET is also a Neutrino Platform experiment at CERN: NP06/ENUBET. A key element of the project is the instrumentation of the decay tunnel to monitor large angle positrons produced together with $\nu_e$ in the three body decays of kaons ($K_{e3}$) and to discriminate them from neutral and charged pions. The need for an efficient and high purity e/$\pi$ separation over a length of several meters, and the requirements for fast response and radiation hardness imposed by the harsh beam environment, suggested the implementation of a longitudinally segmented Fe/scintillator calorimeter with a readout based on WLS fibers and SiPM detectors. An extensive experimental program through several test beam campaigns at the CERN-PS T9 beam line has been pursued on calorimeter prototypes, both with a shashlik and a lateral readout configuration. The latter, in which fibers collect the light from the side of the scintillator tiles, allows to place the light sensors away from the core of the calorimeter, thus reducing possible irradiation damages with respect to the shashlik design. This contribution will present the achievements of the prototyping activities carried out, together with irradiation tests made on the Silicon Photo-Multipliers. Abstract: The ENUBET project is studying a narrow band neutrino beam where lepton production can be monitored at single particle level in an instrumented decay tunnel and that could provide a 1% measurement of the neutrino flux at source. The three body semi-leptonic decay of kaons monitored by large angle positron production offers a fully controlled $\nu_{e}$ source at the GeV scale for a new generation of short baseline experiments. The ENUBET Collaboration presented at NuFact2018 the first end-to-end simulation of the beamline, the physics performance and the results of the test beam performed on the positron tagger. We reported ENUBET expected fluxes for $\nu_{e}$ and $\nu_{\mu}$

11. POLIMERI CONIUGATI POLARI: MATERIALI ECOSOSTENIBILI PER INTERFACCE IN CELLE SOLARI E OLED AD ALTE PRESTAZIONI

Abstract: Le sorgenti luminose a stato solido che utilizzano emettitori organici (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes o OLEDs [1]) sono già presenti sul mercato, ma la loro produzione si basa su complessi processi di evaporazione in alto vuoto che richiedono tempi lunghi e ne innalzano i costi di produzione. Al fine di utilizzare appieno le possibilità offerte dai materiali organici occorre passare ad un processo di fabbricazione, più semplice e sostenibile, basato su tecniche da soluzione. Allo stesso modo, le celle solari organiche (OPV) hanno un notevole vantaggio, rispetto a quelle basate sul silicio: sono leggere, trasparenti, adatte ad un mercato "off-grid" e possono essere fabbricate con tecniche da soluzione come "ink-jet printing" e "roll-to-roll". Il "gap" di efficienza, ma soprattutto la durata, rispetto alla controparte inorganica è però ancora tale da limitarne l'applicazione commerciale. Entrambe le tipologie di dispositivi organici si sviluppano con architetture multistrato, per cui le loro prestazioni sono fortemente dipendenti dalle proprietà delle interfacce tra i diversi strati che li compongono. L'ingegnerizzazione delle interfacce tra strato organico ed elettrodo gioca quindi un ruolo fondamentale nell'ottimizzazione del dispositivo [2]. I polimeri coniugati polari (PCP) sono stati recentemente proposti per svolgere questo ruolo. Si tratta di una classe di materiali semiconduttori che presenta catene laterali alchiliche con gruppi terminali polari o ionici (cationici, anionici o in forma zwitterionica) innestate su un backbone coniugato. Grazie alla natura delle catene laterali, i PCP sono generalmente solubili in solventi polari come metanolo, etanolo e acqua, diversamente dai semiconduttori polimerici tradizionali solubili in solventi organici. Questa solubilità in solventi "green" ortogonali a quelli in cui viene processato lo strato attivo del dispositivo, consente la fabbricazione di architetture multistrato con tecniche da soluzione ecosostenibili, rapide ed economiche, che mimano ciò che fino ad ora era una prerogativa dei processi di termo-sublimazione in alto vuoto. L'estrema facilità di processo di deposizione unita alle funzionalità ioniche hanno spinto la ricerca a sviluppare PCP per ottimizzare i dispositivi elettronici ed optoelettronici organici. Grazie alla formazione di dipoli elettrici all'interfaccia tra elettrodo e materiale organico, l'inserimento di PCP come "interlayer" può infatti portare a migliorare le efficienze sia degli OLED che delle OPV modificando le barriere di potenziale per l'iniezione/estrazione e trasporto delle cariche elettriche. Un ulteriore beneficio offerto dall'utilizzo dei PCP è quello di poter evitare l'impiego, come catodo, di metalli altamente reattivi (come bario o calcio) normalmente necessari per ridurre la barriera di potenziale per l'iniezione di elettroni nel livello di LUMO ("lowest unoccupied molecular orbital" [1]) dello strato organico attivo. Il PCP infatti, grazie alla formazione del dipolo all'interfaccia col metallo, è in grado di ridurre l'elevata barriera tra alluminio (tipico metallo utilizzato come catodo) ed il LUMO stesso. Eliminando metalli reattivi, il dispositivo risulta più stabile e durevole anche in aria. In questa ottica, abbiamo sintetizzato una serie di PCP basati su backbone di polifluorene e catene laterali terminate con diversi gruppi polari o ionici, e li abbiamo testati come "interlayer" in OLED e OPV. I risultati ottenuti hanno mostrato come i materiali testati siano effettivamente in grado di aumentare in maniera rilevante le prestazioni delle diverse tipologie di dispositivi optelecttronici.

We found that some individuals in the exposed population had among the highest serum dioxin levels ever reported, yet chloracne was the only unequivocal effect found; cancer risks are still being investigated. We also found that other individuals with as high or higher serum dioxin levels did not develop chloracne. We also found that the serum half-life of dioxin in this population was 7–8 years, which agrees with other findings although we do report some differences in the serum half-life of TCDD for women and children. We also observed an increase in the percentage of female newborns to parents who resided in Zone A at the time of the explosion, and we also report on the 1976 serum dioxin levels in people who later developed cancer. Abstract: Introduction: The aim of our study was to treat two similar groups of patients suffering from BPH: one group with a complex based on phycocyanin, PEA and selenium; the other group with dutasteride. So the effectiveness of these treatments was checked, especially regarding the improvement of LUTS and the reduction of PSA and prostate volume. Materials and methods: We included 104 patients in the study. All patients aged between 50 and 70 years, PSA values between 4 and 10 ng/ml, prostate volume calculated by transrectal ultrasound between 50 and 70 cc, flowmetry with maximum flow value greater than or equal to 10 ml/s, no suspicious nodules on DRE, no suspicious lesions on MRI (PI-RADS 1-2), negative previous prostatic biopsies or never bioptied, moreover absence of diabetes mellitus or chronic renal failure (blood creatinine >2 mg/dl). Abstract: A study on the frequency of birth defects was conducted in the area around Seveso, Italy, which was contaminated by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in July 1976; this has been the largest population ever exposed to dioxin. From Jan 1, 1977, to Dec 31, 1982, a total of 15,291 births (still and live) were examined, and malformations were reported to an ad hoc birth defects registry. In the most highly contaminated area, 26 births were observed. None of these infants had any major structural defect. Two infants had mild defects. The frequencies of major defects detected in the areas of low or very low contamination were 29.9/1000 and 22.1/1000, respectively. A frequency of 27.7/1000 was registered in the control area. Relative risks were calculated for specific categories of birth defects and for grouped malformations. Although the data collected failed to demonstrate any increased risk of birth defects associated with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, the number of exposed pregnancies was not big enough to show a low and specific teratogenic risk increase.

Abstract: The knowledge of the initial flux in conventional neutrino beams represents the main limitation for a precision (1%) measurement of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] cross-sections. The ENUBET ERC project is studying a facility based on a narrow-band beam capable of constraining the neutrino fluxes normalization through the monitoring of the associated charged leptons in an instrumented decay tunnel. In particular, the identification of large-angle positrons from [Formula: see text] decays at single-particle level can reduce the [Formula: see text] flux uncertainty at the level of 1%. This setup would allow for an unprecedented measurement of the [Formula: see text] cross-section at the GeV scale. Such an experimental input would be highly beneficial to reduce the budget of systematic uncertainties in the next long baseline oscillation experiments. The ENUBET Collaboration presented at ICNFP 2020 the advances in the design and simulation of the hadron beamline, the optimization and performances of a 20 m long focusing transfer line, the design of an horn-based beamline, the results in terms of particle identification in the decay tunnel, and the final design of the ENUBET demonstrator for the instrumented decay tunnel.

25. Organic Light-Emitting Transistors with Simultaneous Enhancement of Optical Power and External Quantum Efficiency via Conjugated Polar Polymer Interlayers.

Abstract: Organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs) show the fascinating combination of electrical switching characteristics and light generation capability. However, to ensure an effective device operation, an efficient injection of charges into the emissive layer is required. The introduction of solution-processed conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) films at the emissive layer/electrode interface represents a promising strategy to improve the electron injection process by dipole formation. However, their use in optoelectronic devices also involves some limitations because of the ionic nature of CPEs. In this context, neutral conjugated polar polymers (CPPs) represent a valid alternative to CPEs because the conjugated backbones of CPPs are functionalized with polar nonionic side groups, thus avoiding ion-dependent drawbacks. By introducing a layer of polyfluorene-containing phosphonate groups underneath the metal electrodes, we here demonstrate a substantial improvement of the electron injection properties into the OLET-emissive layer and, accordingly, a more than 2-fold increased light power and a 5 times higher external quantum efficiency of p-type OLETs in comparison with reference devices without any interlayer. The great benefit of using a transparent glass substrate allowed to selectively investigate the morphological and photoluminescent characteristics of both CPE- and CPP-buried interlayers within complete OLETs by means of an optical scanning probe technique. This, together with a thorough optoelectronic characterization of the figures of merit of working light-emitting devices, allowed to disclose the origin of the improved optical performance of CPP-based devices as well as the operation mechanisms of the investigated interlayer in the corresponding OLETs.

In contrast, the use of halogen bonding to trigger supramolecular gel formation in a two-component gel ('co-gel') is essentially unexplored, and forms the basis for this study. Here, we show that halogen bonding between a pyridyl substituent in a bis(pyridyl urea) and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene brings about gelation, even in polar media such as aqueous methanol and aqueous dimethylsulfoxide. This demonstrates that halogen bonding is sufficiently strong to interfere with competing gel-inhibitory interactions and create a 'tipping point' in gel assembly. Using this concept, we have prepared a halogen bond donor bis(urea) gelator that forms co-gels with halogen bond acceptors.

Abstract: On July 10, 1976, an explosion at a chemical plant near Seveso, Italy, released a mixture of chemicals, including 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol. As a result, several thousand people in the Seveso area may have been exposed to those chemicals. At that time, human exposure assessment was based primarily on soil levels of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin. Medical examinations of this potentially exposed population and control subjects were begun in 1976 and in some cases continued until 1985. In 1988, we began assessing human exposure in this population by measuring 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in small volumes of serum specimens remaining from the medical examinations. As expected, we found that the median serum dioxin levels were highest among people who lived closest to the explosion and were progressively lower among groups living farther away. These measurements have allowed us to assess exposure more accurately among individuals in this population and to relate exposure to various health effects. We found that some individuals in the exposed population had among the highest serum dioxin levels ever reported, yet chloracne was the only unequivocal effect found; cancer risks are still being investigated. We also found that other individuals with as high or higher serum dioxin levels did not develop chloracne. We also found that the serum half-life of dioxin in this population was 7-8 years, which agrees with other findings although we do report some differences in the serum half-life of TCDD for women and children. We also observed an increase in the percentage of female newborns to parents who resided in Zone A at the time of the explosion, and we also report on the 1976 serum dioxin levels in people who later developed cancer.

Abstract: 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin levels (TCDD) were measured in serum specimens from Seveso, Italy, residents, who were potentially highly exposed to the 1976 explosion, and in controls. The residents were chosen so as to represent those who did and did not develop chloracne. Levels of TCDD as high as 56,000 parts per trillion (ppt) were found in these serum specimens that were collected in 1976. These TCDD levels are the highest ever reported, and yet almost all clinical laboratory tests on these individuals were normal; any abnormal test result was only transitory in nature. These findings are unique in linking clinical histories to TCDD levels following an acute exposure.

Abstract: A study on the frequency of birth defects was conducted in the area around Seveso, Italy, which was contaminated by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in July 1976; this has been the largest population ever exposed to dioxin. From Jan 1, 1977, to Dec 31, 1982, a total of 15,291 births (still and live) were examined, and malformations were reported to an ad hoc birth defects registry. In the most highly contaminated area, 26 births were observed. None of these infants had any major structural defect. Two infants had mild defects. The frequencies of major defects detected in the areas of low or very low contamination were 29.9/1000 and 22.1/1000, respectively. A frequency of 27.7/1000 was registered in the control area. Relative risks were calculated for specific categories of birth defects and for grouped malformations. Although the data collected failed to demonstrate any increased risk of birth defects associated with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, the number of exposed pregnancies was not big enough to show a low and specific teratogenic risk increase.
