Abstract

Tokamak à configuration variable (TCV), recently celebrating 30 years of near-continual operation, continues in its missions to advance outstanding key physics and operational scenario issues for ITER and the design of future power plants such as DEMO. The main machine heating systems and operational changes are first described. Then follow five sections: plasma scenarios. ITER Base-Line (IBL) discharges, triangularity studies together with X3 heating and N2 seeding. Edge localised mode suppression, with a high radiation region near the X-point is reported with N _2 injection with and without divertor baffles in a snowflake configuration. Negative triangularity (NT) discharges attained record, albeit transient, β _N ∼ 3 with lower turbulence, higher low-Z impurity transport, vertical stability and density limits and core transport better than the IBL. Positive triangularity L-Mode linear and saturated ohmic confinement confinement saturation, often-correlated with intrinsic toroidal rotation reversals, was probed for D, H and He working gases. H-mode confinement and pedestal studies were extended to low collisionality with electron cyclotron heating obtaining steady state electron iternal transport barrier with neutral beam heating (NBH), and NBH driven H-mode configurations with off-axis co-electron cyclotron current drive. Fast particle physics. The physics of disruptions, runaway electrons and fast ions (FIs) was developed using near-full current conversion at disruption with recombination thresholds characterised for impurity species (Ne, Ar, Kr). Different flushing gases (D2, H2) and pathways to trigger a benign disruption were explored. The 55 kV NBH II generated a rich Alfvénic spectrum modulating the FI fas ion loss detector signal. NT configurations showed less toroidal Alfvén excitation activity preferentially affecting higher FI pitch angles. Scrape-off layer and edge physics. gas puff imaging systems characterised turbulent plasma ejection for several advanced divertor configurations, including NT. Combined diagnostic array divertor state analysis in detachment conditions was compared to modelling revealing an importance for molecular processes. Divertor physics. Internal gas baffles diversified to include shorter/longer structures on the high and/or low field side to probe compressive efficiency. Divertor studies concentrated upon mitigating target power, facilitating detachment and increasing the radiated power fraction employing alternative divertor geometries, optimised X-point radiator regimes and long-legged configurations. Smaller-than-expected improvements with total flux expansion were better modelled when including parallel flows. Peak outer target heat flux reduction was achieved (>50%) for high flux-expansion geometries, maintaining core performance ( H _98 > 1). A reduction in target heat loads and facilitated detachment access at lower core densities is reported. Real-time control. TCV’s real-time control upgrades employed MIMO gas injector control of stable, robust, partial detachment and plasma β feedback control avoiding neoclassical tearing modes with plasma confinement changes. Machine-learning enhancements include trajectory tracking disruption proximity and avoidance as well as a first-of-its-kind reinforcement learning-based controller for the plasma equilibrium trained entirely on a free-boundary simulator. Finally, a short description of TCV’s immediate future plans will be given.

Abstract

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Optical spectroscopic techniques, such as Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) or Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF), have already been used to study and detect Biological Agents (BAs). Unfortunately, BAs usually share similar-shaped emitted spectra and low-signal intensities, making their detection and classification difficult to assess. Least-Square Minimisation (LSM) based algorithms are usually deployed to measure the concentration of agents from spectra. Recently, it has been shown how the use of ad hoc weights can help in improving the performance of the concentration evaluation. More specifically, it has been observed that the “weight matrix” should be modelled as a function of the boundary conditions of the problem. This work proposes a new weight matrix that is based on the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the measurements. The idea is based on the fact that more noisy data are less reliable and therefore weight should be lowered. The paper, after a brief introduction and review of the LSM applied to spectra, will show the new methodology. A systematic analysis of the new algorithm is done and the comparison with the other LSM algorithms is presented. The results clearly show that there is a range of parameters for which the new algorithm performs better.

5. Detection of warning signal of particulate emission on the basis of fixed threshold in real-time using a lidar system

Abstract

Monitoring pollutant emissions in an urban area is of primary importance in order to guarantee high levels of human health (by reducing the impact of respiratory diseases on urban inhabitants) and good preservation of objects (such as historical sites or buildings). The European Environment Agency (EEA) has established that the maximum concentration of PM2.5 concentration for long-term exposure is 10 μg/m3. By measuring the light that has been backscattered by atmospheric particulates, the lidar technique seems to be a valid method to provide a warning signal when a particulate concentration threshold is exceeded. In addition, the lidar system can also provide information about the distance at which the particulate threshold is exceeded. In this research measurements of traffic-originated particulate in the area near the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” is analysed at different times on a weekday to obtain continuous monitoring of its backscattering coefficient, values of particulate concentration and details about time and distance from the lidar system at which a warning signal is provided. The University of Rome “Tor Vergata” is in an area where traffic is very heavy, so high pollutant concentration values are to be expected.

Abstract

The project “Bizzarrini P538 EcoTarga” has been developed by the DIET department of “Sapienza” University of Rome. The project consisted in the design and construction of a replica of a historic Italyn car, updated with modern parallel hybrid-type plug-in technologies, and a Lithium-polymer battery storage system. The research aimed at undertaking practical experimentation on parallel hybrid vehicles, with a special focus on the problems related to the construction and optimization of hybrid propulsion systems. For these reasons special focus are dedicated to describe the layout of the prototype and some technical data of the devices used in the project, and the measurement campaign achieved on the tested storate system. Finally the hybrid parallel control strategy was obtained, in first, with a simulation model by coupling the simulation software vehicle dynamics GT-Drive with the Matlab/Simulink environment, to optimize control strategy of the prototype. and then used to implement the control system in to CompactRio CPU, to manage the load requests to the motor and engine.

Abstract

The project is a collaboration between the “Polo per la Mobilita Sostenibile” (Pomos) and NOZOMI Motor and it is focused on the hybridization of an off-road vehicle, with 2.2 litres four cylinders petrol engine. The aim is to build an hybrid parallel vehicle with only few simple upgrades. Through these we expect to reduce fuel consumption by 25% and the formation of pollutants. This project provides the update of the vehicle, by an Ansaldo AC three-phase asynchronous electric drive, liquid cooled. The AC electric drive can be used with the internal combustion engine, in order to move the rear axle, or without the ICE to allow the use in full electric traction. A control unit provides the interaction of the two engines. Energy storage system is made by KOKAM Li-ion batteries. These are tested in charge and discharge cycles to evaluate their features.

Abstract

The main purpose of the paper is to describe a small size hybrid vehicle having ultracapacitors as on-board storage unit. The vehicle on-board main power supply is achieved by a genset being formed of a 250 cm 3 internal combustion engine and a permanent magnet synchronous electric generator, whereas 4 16V-500F ultracapacitors modules are connected in series in order to supply as well as to store the power peaks during respectively acceleration and braking vehicle modes of operation. The traction power is provided by a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, whereas a distributed power electronic interface is in charge of all the required electronic conversions as well of controlling the operating conditions for each power unit. The paper discusses the implemented control strategy and shows experimental results on the modes of operation of both generation unit and storage unit.

Abstract

In order to plan a health education programme in high schools in Southern Latium, a survey on knowledge, attitude and behaviour about Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS was carried out among students of three high schools in Cassino. An anonymous, self-administered questionnaire was submitted to all students of the last two years in those schools. The results show a good knowledge of Cassino's students about HIV transmission, in similar or higher proportion respect to analogous surveys conducted in Italy or abroad. We found a good knowledge only about AIDS, Herpes genitalis and Syphilis, while knowledge about Hepatitis B, Condyloma acuminatum and Gonorrhoea is not satisfactory. Considering that 38% of male and 17% of female students declared to have already had their first sexual intercourse, the results suggest that there is a strong need to implement an educational intervention on sexuality and STD.

Abstract

The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER. 13. Enhancing Radiation Detection by Drones through Numerical Fluid Dynamics Simulations.

Abstract

This study addresses the optimization of the location of a radioactive-particle sensor on a drone. Based on the analysis of the physical process and of the boundary conditions introduced in the model, computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed to analyze how the turbulence caused by drone propellers may influence the response of the sensors. Our initial focus was the detection of a small amount of radioactivity, such as that associated with a release of medical waste. Drones equipped with selective low-cost sensors could be quickly sent to dangerous areas that first responders might not have access to and be able to assess the level of danger in a few seconds, providing details about the source terms to Radiological-Nuclear (RN) advisors and decision-makers. Our ultimate application is the simulation of complex scenarios where fluid-dynamic instabilities are combined with elevated levels of radioactivity, as was the case during the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plant accidents. In similar circumstances, accurate mapping of the radioactive plume would provide invaluable input-data for the mathematical models that can predict the dispersion of radioactivity in time and space. This information could be used as input for predictive models and decision support systems (DSS) to get a full situational awareness. In particular, these models may be used either to guide the safe intervention of first responders or the later need to evacuate affected regions.

Abstract

In order to plan a health education programme in high schools in Southern Latium, a survey on knowledge, attitude and behaviour about Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS was carried out among students of three high schools in Cassino. An anonymous, self-administered questionnaire was submitted to all students of the last two years in those schools. The results show a good knowledge of Cassino's students about HIV transmission, in similar or higher proportion respect to analogous surveys conducted in Italy or abroad. We found a good knowledge only about AIDS, Herpes genitalis and Syphilis, while knowledge about Hepatitis B, Condyloma acuminatum and Gonorrhoea is not satisfactory. Considering that 38% of male and 17% of female students declared to have already had their first sexual intercourse, the results suggest that there is a strong need to implement an educational intervention on sexuality and STD.
