Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) ultra low noise haloscope technology has enabled the successful completion of two science runs (1A and 1B) that looked for dark matter axions in the $2.66$ to $3.1$ $\mu$eV mass range with Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnisky (DFSZ) sensitivity Ref. [1,2]. Therefore, it is the most sensitive axion search experiment to date in this mass range. We discuss the technological advances made in the last several years to achieve this sensitivity, which includes the implementation of components, such as state-of-the-art quantum limited amplifiers and a dilution refrigerator. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of a frequency tunable Microstrip Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) Amplifier (MSA), in Run 1A, and a Josephson Parametric Amplifier (JPA), in Run 1B, along with novel analysis tools that characterize the system noise temperature., Comment: 23 pages, 28 figures

We describe the first implementation of a Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifier (JTWPA) in an axion dark matter search. The operation of the JTWPA for a period of about two weeks achieved sensitivity to axion-like particle dark matter with axion–photon couplings above 10−13 Ge V−1 over a narrow range of axion masses centered around 19.84 µeV by tuning the resonant frequency of the cavity over the frequency range of 4796.7–4799.5 MHz. The JTWPA was operated in the insert of the axion dark matter experiment as part of an independent receiver chain that was attached to a 0.56-l cavity. The ability of the JTWPA to deliver high gain over a wide (3 GHz) bandwidth has engendered interest from those aiming to perform broadband axion searches, a longstanding goal in this field.

he Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,324 new measurements from 878 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on High Energy Soft QCD and Diffraction and one on the Determination of CKM Angles from B Hadrons. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 98 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 22 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print and as a web version optimized for use on phones as well as an Android app.

The evolution of degenerate matter out of equilibrium is a topic of interest in fields such as condensed matter, nuclear and atomic physics, and increasingly cosmology, including inflaton physics prior to reheating. This follow-up paper extends the recent paper on the super-de Broglie dynamics of pure condensates of non-relativistic identical particles subject to non-local two-body interactions to the dynamics of mixed states. It is found that the two-body correlation function plays an increasingly dynamical role in these systems, driving the development of condensates and distributed phases alike. Examples of distribution and correlation evolution are presented, including instances of collapse, bound and unbound states, and phonons in the bulk. This paper reports on a cavity haloscope search for dark matter axions in the galactic halo in the mass range $2.81$-$3.31$ ${\mu}eV$. This search excludes the full range of axion-photon coupling values predicted in benchmark models of the invisible axion that solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics, and marks the first time a haloscope search has been able to search for axions at mode crossings using an alternate cavity configuration. Unprecedented sensitivity in this higher mass range is achieved by deploying an ultra low-noise Josephson parametric amplifier as the first stage signal amplifier.

Searching for axion dark matter, the ADMX collaboration acquired data from January to October 2018, over the mass range 2.81--3.31 $\mu$eV, corresponding to the frequency range 680--790 MHz. Using an axion haloscope consisting of a microwave cavity in a strong magnetic field, the ADMX experiment excluded Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnisky (DFSZ) axions at 100% dark matter density over this entire frequency range, except for a few gaps due to mode crossings. The first paper in this series showed that QCD axion dark matter, as a highly-correlated Bose fluid, contains extra-classical physics on cosmological scales. The nature of the derived extra-classical physics is exchange-correlation interactions induced by the constraints of symmetric particle exchange and inter-axion correlations from self-gravitation. The paper also showed that the impact of extra-classical physics on early structure formation is marginal, as the exchange-correlation interaction is inherently non-linear. This paper continues the study of axion structure formation into the non-linear regime by now considering the case of full collapse and virialization. The N-body method is chosen to solve the collapse problem, and its algorithms are derived for a condensed Bose fluid. Simulations of isolated gravitational collapse are performed for both Bose and cold dark matter fluids using a prototype N-body code. Unique Bose structures are found to survive even the most violent collapses. Bose post-collapse features include dynamical changes to global structures, creation of new broad substructures, violations of classical binding energy conditions, and new fine structures. Effective models of the novel structures are constructed and possibilities for their discovery are discussed., Comment: 29 pages, 27 figures

The $\mu$eV axion is a well-motivated extension to the standard model. The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) collaboration seeks to discover this particle by looking for the resonant conversion of dark-matter axions to microwave photons in a strong magnetic field. In this Letter, we report results from a pathfinder experiment, the ADMX "Sidecar," which is designed to pave the way for future, higher mass, searches. This testbed experiment lives inside of and operates in tandem with the main ADMX experiment. The Sidecar experiment excludes masses in three widely spaced frequency ranges (4202-4249, 5086-5799, and 7173-7203 MHz). In addition, Sidecar demonstrates the successful use of a piezoelectric actuator for cavity tuning. Systems of identical particles possessing non-local interactions are capable of exhibiting extra-classical properties beyond the characteristic quantum length scales. This letter derives the dynamics of such systems in the non-relativistic and degenerate limit, showing the effect of exchange symmetry and correlations on structure both in and out of equilibrium. Such descriptions may be crucial to understanding systems ranging from nuclei to dark matter. This Letter reports results from a haloscope search for dark matter axions with masses between 2.66 and 2.81 $\mu$eV. The search excludes the range of axion-photon couplings predicted by plausible models of the invisible axion. This unprecedented sensitivity is achieved by operating a large-volume haloscope at sub-kelvin temperatures, thereby reducing thermal noise as well as the excess noise from the ultra-low-noise SQUID amplifier used for the signal power readout. Axions as dark matter is an increasingly important subject in astrophysics and cosmology. Experimental and observational searches are mounting across the mass spectrum of axion-like particles, many of which require detailed knowledge of axion structure over a wide range of scales. Current understanding of axion structures is far from complete, however, due largely to controversy in modeling the candidate's highly-degenerate state. The series Axion Structure Formation seeks to develop a consistent model of QCD axion dark matter dynamics that follows their highly-degenerate nature to the present using novel modeling techniques and sophisticated simulations. This inaugural paper presents the problem of describing many non-relativistic axions with minimal degrees of freedom and constructs a theory of axion infall for the limit of complete condensation. The derived model is shown to contain axion-specific dynamics not unlike the exchange-correlation influences experienced by identical fermions. The Project 8 collaboration seeks to measure the absolute neutrino mass scale by means of precision spectroscopy of the beta decay of tritium. Our technique, cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy, measures the frequency of the radiation emitted by electrons produced by decays in an ambient magnetic field. Because the cyclotron frequency is inversely proportional to the electron's Lorentz factor, this is also a measurement of the electron's energy. In order to demonstrate the viability of this technique, we have assembled and successfully operated a prototype system, which uses a rectangular waveguide to collect the cyclotron radiation from internal conversion electrons emitted from a gaseous $^{83m}$Kr source. Here we present the main design aspects of the first phase prototype, which was operated during parts of 2014 and 2015. Signal estimates for direct axion dark matter searches have used the isothermal sphere halo model for the last several decades. While insightful, the isothermal model does not capture effects from a halo's infall history nor the influence of baryonic matter, which has been shown to significantly influence a halo's inner structure. The high resolution of cavity axion detectors can make use of modern cosmological structure-formation simulations, which begin from realistic initial conditions, incorporate a wide range of baryonic physics, and are capable of resolving detailed structure. This letter uses a state-of-the-art cosmological N-body+Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics simulation to develop an improved signal model for axion cavity searches. Signal shapes from a class of galaxies encompassing the Milky Way are found to depart significantly from the isothermal sphere. The most sensitive direct method to establish the absolute neutrino mass is observation of the endpoint of the tritium beta-decay spectrum. Cyclotron Radiation Emission Spectroscopy (CRES) is a precision spectrographic technique that can probe much of the unexplored neutrino mass range with $\mathcal{O}({\rm eV})$ resolution. A lower bound of $m(\nu_e) \gtrsim 9(0.1)\, {\rm meV}$ is set by observations of neutrino oscillations, while the KATRIN Experiment - the current-generation tritium beta-decay experiment that is based on Magnetic Adiabatic Collimation with an Electrostatic (MAC-E) filter - will achieve a sensitivity of $m(\nu_e) \lesssim 0.2\,{\rm eV}$. The CRES technique aims to avoid the difficulties in scaling up a MAC-E filter-based experiment to achieve a lower mass sensitivity. The near universality of DM halo density profiles provided by N-body simulations has proven to be robust against changes in total mass density, power spectrum, and some forms of initial velocity dispersion. In this letter we study the effects of coherently spinning up an isolated DM-only progenitor on halo structure. Halos with spins within several standard deviations of the simulated mean ($\lambda \lesssim 0.20$) produce profiles with negligible deviations from the universal form. Only when the spin becomes quite large ($\lambda \gtrsim 0.20$) do departures become evident. The angular momentum distribution also exhibits a near universal form, which is also independent of halo spin up to $\lambda \lesssim 0.20$. A correlation between these epidemic profiles and the presence of a strong bar in the virialized halo is also observed. We investigate the ellipticity of the point-spread function (PSF) produced by imaging an unresolved source with a telescope, subject to the effects of atmospheric turbulence. It is important to quantify these effects in order to understand the errors in shape measurements of astronomical objects, such as those used to study weak gravitational lensing of field galaxies. The PSF modeling involves either a Fourier transform of the phase information in the pupil plane or a ray-tracing approach, which has the advantage of requiring fewer computations than the Fourier transform. Using a standard method, involving the Gaussian weighted second moments of intensity, we then calculate the ellipticity of the PSF patterns. We find significant ellipticity for the instantaneous patterns (up to more than 10%). Longer exposures, which we approximate by combining multiple (N) images from uncorrelated atmospheric realizations, yield progressively lower ellipticity (as 1 / sqrt(N)). We also verify that the measured ellipticity does not depend on the sampling interval in the pupil plane using the Fourier method. However, we find that the results using the ray-tracing technique do depend on the pupil sampling interval, representing a gradual breakdown of the geometric approximation at high spatial frequencies. Therefore, ray tracing is generally not an accurate method of modeling PSF ellipticity induced by atmospheric turbulence unless some additional procedure is implemented to correctly account for the effects of high spatial frequency aberrations. The Fourier method, however, can be used directly to accurately model PSF ellipticity, which can give insights into errors in the statistics of field galaxy shapes used in studies of weak gravitational lensing., Comment: 9 pages, 5 color figures (some reduced in size). This is a final report of the ADMX Phase 2a program. This program is a project allowing for a sensitive axion dark-matter axion search at higher axion masses. The Phase 2a program also prepares the project for lower temperature anticipated in later operations. The Phase 2a program includes sensitive data-taking operations at two cavity modes, TM010 and TM020, allowing for faster data-taking operations and extending the search to higher and plausible dark-matter axion masses.

It has been understood since 1897 that accelerating charges must emit electromagnetic radiation. Cyclotron radiation, the particular form of radiation emitted by an electron orbiting in a magnetic field, was first derived in 1904. Despite the simplicity of this concept, and the enormous utility of electron spectroscopy in nuclear and particle physics, single-electron cyclotron radiation has never been observed directly. Here we demonstrate single-electron detection in a novel radiofrequency spec- trometer. We observe the cyclotron radiation emitted by individual magnetically-trapped electrons that are produced with mildly-relativistic energies by a gaseous radioactive source. The relativistic shift in the cyclotron frequency permits a precise electron energy measurement. Precise beta elec- tron spectroscopy from gaseous radiation sources is a key technique in modern efforts to measure the neutrino mass via the tritium decay endpoint, and this work demonstrates a fundamentally new approach to precision beta spectroscopy for future neutrino mass experiments., 6 pages, 3 figures

In the late 20th century, cosmology became a precision science. Now, at the beginning of the next century, the parameters describing how our universe evolved from the Big Bang are generally known to a few percent. One key parameter is the total mass density of the universe. Normal matter constitutes only a small fraction of the total mass density. Observations suggest this additional mass, the dark matter, is cold (that is, moving nonrelativistically in the early universe) and interacts feebly if at all with normal matter and radiation. There’s no known such elementary particle, so the strong presumption is the dark matter consists of particle relics of a new kind left over from the Big Bang. One of the most important questions in science is the nature of this dark matter. One attractive particle dark-matter candidate is the axion. The axion is a hypothetical elementary particle arising in a simple and elegant extension to the standard model of particle physics that nulls otherwise observable CP-violating effects (where CP is the product of charge reversal C and parity inversion P) in quantum chromo dynamics (QCD). A light axion of mass 10 −(6–3) eV (the invisible axion) would couple extraordinarily weakly to normal matter and radiation and would therefore be extremely difficult to detect in the laboratory. However, such an axion is a compelling dark-matter candidate and is therefore a target of a number of searches. Compared with other particle dark-matter candidates, the plausible range of axion dark-matter couplings and masses is narrowly constrained. This focused search range allows for definitive searches, where a nonobservation would seriously impugn the dark-matter QCD-axion hypothesis. Axion searches use a wide range of technologies, and the experiment sensitivities are now reaching likely dark-matter axion couplings and masses. This article is a selective overview of the current generation of sensitive axion searches. Not all techniques and experiments are discussed, but I hope to give a sense of the current experimental landscape of the search for dark-matter axions.

▪ Abstract The axion, a favored dark matter candidate, is expected to have a very small mass and extraordinarily weak couplings. Although it has eluded discovery or exclusion for three decades, it remains the most compelling solution to the strong-CP problem. Axions may be detected by their resonant conversion to RF photons in a microwave cavity permeated by a magnetic field. Experiments have already set significant limits on the axion's mass and photon coupling; progress in photon detection schemes at or below the standard quantum limit will soon enable definitive searches. Similarly, axions produced in the solar burning core may be detectable by their conversion to X rays in a magnetic helioscope. Significant improvements in both mass range and sensitivity of the axion helioscope will likewise be forthcoming in the next few years.

The axion is a hypothetical particle with a mass possibly a trillion times lighter than an electron and exceedingly small couplings to ordinary matter. Yet experiments may soon detect its presence, either as dark matter or as a component of solar flux.

Recent determinations of cosmological parameters point to a flat Universe, whose total energy density is composed of about two-thirds vacuum energy and one-third matter. Ordinary baryonic matter is relegated to a small fraction of the latter, within which the luminous part is an order of magnitude smaller yet. Particle dark matter, i.e., one or more relic particle species from the big bang, is thus strongly suggested as the dominant component of matter in the Universe. The axion, a hypothetical elementary pseudoscalar arising from the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong-$\mathrm{CP}$ problem, is a well-motivated candidate. If the axion exists, it must be extremely light, in the mass range of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}--{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}\mathrm{eV},$ and possess extraordinarily feeble couplings to matter and radiation. Nevertheless, as proposed by Sikivie in 1983, the axion's two-photon coupling lends itself to a feasible search strategy with currently available technology. In this scheme, axions resonantly convert to single microwave photons by a Primakoff interaction, in a tunable microwave cavity permeated by a strong magnetic field. Present experiments utilizing heterostructure transistor microwave amplifiers have achieved total system noise temperatures of $\ensuremath{\sim}3\mathrm{K}$ and represent the world's quietest spectral radio receivers. Exclusion regions have already been published well into the band of realistic axion model couplings, within the lowest decade of mass range. Recent breakthroughs in the development of near-quantum-limited superconducting quantum interference device amplifiers should reduce the system noise temperature to $\ensuremath{\sim}100\mathrm{mK}$ or less. Ongoing research into using Rydberg-atom single-quantum detectors as the detector in a microwave cavity experiment could further reduce the effective noise temperature. In parallel with improvements in amplifier technology, promising concepts for higher-frequency cavity resonators are being explored to open up the higher decades in mass range. Definitive experiments to find or exclude the axion may therefore be at hand in the next few years. As the microwave cavity technique measures the total energy of the axion, a positive discovery could well reveal fine structure of the signal due to flows of nonthermalized axions. Manifesting diurnal and sidereal modulation, such detailed features would contain a wealth of information about the history, structure, and dynamics of our Milky Way galaxy.

The early summer of 2000 saw the start of the RHIC experimental programme. The PHOBOS collaboration used data from the beginning of the running period to extract the first physics information about this exciting new regime. This first measurement consisted of pseudorapidity densities of primary charged particles near mid-rapidity in central Au + Au collisions at beam energies which gave centre-of-mass energies per pair of colliding nucleons of √snn = 56 and 130 GeV. The observed densities are higher than those observed previously in any collisions in the laboratory. In addition, the rate of increase in density between the two energies is significantly larger than that for nucleon-nucleon collisions at comparable beam energies. This paper will briefly describe the PHOBOS experiment (including the subset of the full detector installed for the early period of the RHIC beam), discuss the results of the first physics measurement and conclude with the prospects for the future, especially in the area of strangeness production.

The axion, a hypothetical elementary particle, emerged from a compelling solution to the Strong-CP problem in QCD. Subsequently, the axion was recognized to be a good Cold Dark Matter candidate. Although dark matter axions have only feeble couplings to matter and radiation, extremely sensitive searches are underway around the world. We review the state of experiments searching for the axion through its coupling to photons. Besides answering an outstanding question in particle physics, the discovery of dark matter axions may provide a detailed history of the formation of our Milky Way galaxy through the structure of the axion signal.

SUMMARY Banana leaves showing different levels of black Sigatoka disease were collected from an unsprayed plantation in Costa Rica during two separate periods representing the wet to dry season transition (October 1993 – February 1994) and the dry to wet season transition (April – September 1995). Laboratory studies were used to investigate the relationship between the release of Mycosphaerella fijiensis ascospores and the amount of inoculum on banana plants showing different levels of infection, as assessed by leaf necrotic area. The number of perithecia present in the necrotic area was used as an indication of potential ascospore loads and was investigated as a series of regression equations. A series of rewetting and incubation regimes was used to investigate spore release under field conditions (21°C and 100% relative humidity in the early morning and 28°C, 60% relative humidity on days when it rained in mid-afternoon). Results suggest that rainfall, combined with a high temperature, may lead to peaks of ascospore release but without necessarily increasing overall numbers released over periods of up to 4 days and that a high level of spore release was less sensitive to changes in temperature once it had been initiated. The exact role of temperature in spore release is still unclear, however, as leaf samples kept at atypically low temperatures also released non-germinating ascospores. An average of 4.5 ascospores was released per perithecium. This does not resolve ambiguities in the literature regarding the number of ascospores present in each perithecium. A linear model relating the average ascospore numbers and necrotic area, using quick estimates of the amounts of necrotic area on the leaves of a random sample of plants across a plantation, is proposed, to give an indication of the relative amount of airborne inoculum potentially available between different plantations.

There is abundant evidence for large amounts of unseen matter in the universe. This dark matter, by its very nature, couples feebly to ordinary matter and is correspondingly difficult to detect. Nonetheless, several experiments are now underway with the sensitivity required to detect directly galactic halo dark matter through their interactions with matter and radiation. These experiments divide into two broad classes: searches for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) and searches for axions. There exists a very strong theoretical bias for supposing that supersymmetry (SUSY) is a correct description of nature. WIMPs are predicted by this SUSY theory and have the required properties to be dark matter. These WIMPs are detected from the byproducts of their occasional recoil against nucleons. There are efforts around the world to detect these rare recoils. The WIMP part of this overview focuses on the cryogenic dark matter search (CDMS) underway in California. Axions, another favored dark matter candidate, are predicted to arise from a minimal extension of the standard model that explains the absence of the expected large CP violating effects in strong interactions. Axions can, in the presence of a large magnetic field, turn into microwave photons. It is the slight excess of photons above noise that signals the axion. Axion searches are underway in California and Japan. The axion part of this overview focuses on the California effort. Brevity does not allow me to discuss other WIMP and axion searches, likewise for accelerator and satellite based searches; I apologize for their omission.

We have examined 2.4 × 109 events recorded by the Chicago Air Shower Array-Michigan Muon Array (CASA-MIA) experiment for evidence of ultra-high-energy (100 TeV) neutral particle and gamma-ray emissions from the Crab Nebula and Pulsar between 1990 March 4 and 1995 October 9. No such emissions have been detected. Over this interval, the 90% confidence level integral flux limits for continuous emission above 141 TeV are 2.08 × 10-14 cm-2 s-1 for any neutral particle (which can produce a detectable air shower) and 9.21 × 10-15 cm-2 s-1 for gamma rays. There is no evidence of transient emission on timescales of 1 day or longer. The 90% confidence level integral flux limit for emission on a single day is conservatively estimated to be 4.40 × 10-12 cm-2 s-1 for any neutral particle and 5.09 × 10-12 cm-2 s-1 for gamma rays. There is no evidence for emission from the pulsar at the radio period on intervals of 1 day or longer. The 2 σ (97.7% confidence) limit on the pulsed flux on the most significant day is 3.29 × 10-12 cm-2 s-1 for any neutral particle with mass less than 21 MeV, and 8.31 × 10-12 cm-2 s-1 for gamma rays. For an interval of 162 sidereal days beginning 1992 March 1, the pulsed flux limit was 2.39 × 10-13 cm-2 s-1 for any neutral particle with mass less than 21 MeV, again above 141 TeV.

The Project 8 Collaboration is exploring a new technique for the spectroscopy of medium-energy electrons (∼ 1 - 100 keV) with the ultimate goal of measuring the effective mass of the electron antineutrino by the tritium endpoint method. Our method is based on the detection of microwave-frequency cyclotron radiation emitted by magnetically trapped electrons. The immediate goal of Project 8 is to demonstrate the utility of this technique for a tritium endpoint experiment through a high-precision measurement of the conversion electron spectrum of ^(83)mKr . We present concepts for detecting this cyclotron radiation, focusing on a guided wave design currently being implemented in a prototype apparatus at the University of Washington.

Trajectory analysis of the windfields at 10 m and 1.5 km was used to determine the direction and extent of windborne movements of insects trapped in spring and summer in south-eastern and eastern Asia for the period 1968 to 1985. Approximately 2500 trajectories, depicting the movements of airborne particles, were constructed where temperatures were high enough (>=10°C) to allow flight and where wind speeds (> =5 kmh−1) were expected to lead to downwind displacements. Trap catches were dominated (97%) by delphacid species (e.g. Nilaparvata lugens Stål and Sogatella furcifera (Horváth)), with Cicadellidae (1.1%) and Diptera (0.7%) as the next most numerous. Very few Lepidoptera were reported. Most trajectories were less than or equal to 40 h in duration. The previously recognized northwards migration along a broad front in prevailing Summer Monsoon and Trade winds was confirmed, as was the important role of frontal depressions in the windborne migration of insects in temperate areas. Nearly 50% of the trajectories were constructed in mobile weather systems which both disturbed and strengthened the prevailing winds and led to pronounced differences in the direction and distance of sources for insects caught at any catching site. Similarly, fluctuations in position of quasi-stationary fronts induced considerable mixing of populations from different sources and influenced the northern extent of each phase of rice pest migration. The results supported earlier findings that migrations occurred between the tropics and temperate areas during the spring and summer, but also indicated that migrations within the tropics at this time of year were a more frequent occurrence than had been considered previously.

at √ s NN = 200 GeV. The spectra were measured for transverse momenta pT from 0.25 to 4.5 GeV/c in a rapidity range of 0.2 < y� < 1.4. The evolution of the spectra is studied as a function of collision centrality, from 65 to 344 participating nucleons. The results are compared to data from proton- antiproton collisions and Au+Au collisions at lower RHIC energies. We find a significant change of the spectral shape between proton-antiproton and peripheral Au+Au collisions. Comparing peripheral to central Au+Au collisions, we find that the yields at high pT exhibit approximate scaling with the number of participating nucleons, rather than scaling with the number of binary collisions.

We describe the technical details and the performance of a large array which detects both the electron and muon components in extensive air showers with energies ≥ 1014 eV. The array was designed to search for γ-rays from astrophysical sources. The background of cosmic rays is reduced by the selection of muon poor events. The array consists of 1089 scintillation detectors on the surface covering an area of 0.23 km2 and 1024 scintillation counters of 2.5 m2 each, buried 3 m below the surface for muon detection. Each of the surface detectors has its own local electronics and local data storage controlled by a microprocessor. The array is located at Dugway, Utah USA (40.2°N, 112.8°W) where the average atmospheric depth is 870 g/cm2.

The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) was designed to detect ultra-weakly interacting relic axion particles by searching for their conversion to microwave photons in a resonant cavity positioned in a strong magnetic field. Given the extremely low expected axion-photon conversion power we have designed, built and operated a microwave receiver based on a Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID). We describe the ADMX receiver in detail as well as the analysis of narrow band microwave signals. We demonstrate the sustained use of a SQUID amplifier operating between 812 and 860 MHz with a noise temperature of 1 K. PHOBOS is one of the four experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider that started colliding gold nuclei at a center of mass energy of √sNN = 56 and 130 GeV per pair of colliding nucleons in June 2000. The pseudorapidity density of primary charged particles in central collisions has been measured near mid-rapidity.

Hidden U(1) gauge symmetries are common to many extensions of the standard model proposed to explain dark matter. The hidden gauge vector bosons of such extensions may mix kinetically with standard model photons, providing a means for electromagnetic power to pass through conducting barriers. The axion dark matter experiment detector was used to search for hidden vector bosons originating in an emitter cavity driven with microwave power. We exclude hidden vector bosons with kinetic couplings $\ensuremath{\chi}g3.48\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}8}$ for masses less than $3\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{eV}$. This limit represents an improvement of more than 2 orders of magnitude in sensitivity relative to previous cavity experiments.

The axion is a hypothetical elementary particle whose existence would explain the baffling absence of CP violation in the strong interactions. It’s properties in addition make it a good dark‐matter candidate. Even though dark‐matter axions would make up the overwhelming majority of mass in the universe, they are extraordinarily difficult to detect. We have developed a detector, ADMX, for dark‐matter axions that is at heart an exquisitely sensitive detector of electromagnetic radiation. This talk will describe the progress we have made in this experimental search.

Cosmic shear holds great promise for a precision independent measurement of $\Omega\rm_m$, the mass density of the universe relative to the critical density. The signal is expected to be weak, so a thorough understanding of systematic effects is crucial. An important systematic effect is the atmosphere: shear power introduced by the atmosphere is larger than the expected signal. Algorithms exist to extract the cosmic shear from the atmospheric component, though a measure of their success applied to a range of seeing conditions is lacking. To gain insight into atmospheric shear, Gemini South imaging in conjunction with ground condition and satellite wind data were obtained. We find that under good seeing conditions Point-Spread-Function (PSF) correlations persist well beyond the separation typical of high-latitude stars. Under these conditions, ellipticity residuals based on a simple PSF interpolation can be reduced to within a factor of a few of the shot-noise induced ellipticity floor. We also find that the ellipticity residuals are highly correlated with wind direction. Finally, we correct stellar shapes using a more sophisticated procedure and generate shear statistics from stars. Under all seeing conditions in our data set the residual correlations lie everywhere below the target signal level. For good seeing we find that the systematic error attributable to atmospheric turbulence is comparable in magnitude to the statistical error (shape noise) over angular scales relevant to present lensing surveys., Comment: To appear in ApJ April 10, 2007, 659 1

We have performed a high resolution search for galactic halo axions in cold flows using a microwave cavity detector. The analysis procedure and other details of this search are described. No axion signal was found in the mass range 1.98-2.17 micro-eV. We place upper limits on the density of axions in local discrete flows based on this result., 11 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

Theoretical arguments predict that the distribution of cold dark matter in spiral galaxies has peaks in velocity space associated with non-thermalized flows of dark matter particles. We searched for the corresponding peaks in the spectrum of microwave photons from axion to photon conversion in the cavity detector of dark matter axions. We found none and place limits on the density of any local flow of axions as a function of the flow velocity dispersion over the axion mass range 1.98 to 2.17 $\mu$eV., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The axion is a hypothetical elementary particle and cold dark matter candidate. In this RF cavity experiment, halo axions entering a resonant cavity immersed in a static magnetic field convert into microwave photons, with the resulting photons detected by a low-noise receiver. The ADMX Collaboration presents new limits on the axion-to-photon coupling and local axion dark matter halo mass density from a RF cavity axion search in the axion mass range 1.9-2.3 microeV, broadening the search range to 1.9-3.3 microeV. The axion, a hypothetical elementary particle, emerged from a compelling solution to the Strong‐CP Problem in QCD. Subsequently, the axion was recognized to be a good Cold Dark Matter candidate. Although dark‐matter axions have only feeble couplings to matter and radiation, these axions may be detected through resonant conversion of axions into microwave photons in a high‐Q cavity threaded by a strong static magnetic field. This technique is at present the only means whereby dark‐matter axions with plausible couplings may be detected at the required sensitivity. This talk describes recent results from the Axion Dark Matter Experiment (ADMX), now the world’s most sensitive search for axions. There will also be a short overview of the ADMX upgrade, which promises sensitivity to even the more feebly coupled dark matter axions even should they make up only a minority fraction of the local dark matter halo.

The axion is a hypothetical elementary particle and a cold dark matter candidate. It could dominate potential wells of most astrophysical objects. Axions spontaneously decay into nearly monochromatic microwave photons. We present results from a radio telescope search for these axion decay photons of mass between 298 and 363 micro-eV in Local Group dwarf galaxies. We report the first results of a high-sensitivity (10^{-23} Watt) search for light halo axions through their conversion to microwave photons. At 90 percent confidence we exclude a KSVZ axion of mass 2.9 x 10^{-6} eV to 3.3 x 10^{-6} eV as the dark matter in the halo of our Galaxy., Comment: 11 text pages, 4 figures (figures 2 and 3 combined), to be published in Physical Review Letters

We report first results from a large scale search for dark matter axions. The experiment probes axion masses of 1.3-13 micro-eV at a sensitivity which is about 50 times higher than previous pilot experiments. We have already scanned part of this mass range at a sensitivity better than required to see at least one generic axion model, the KSVZ axion. The Chicago Air Shower Array has imaged the shadows of the Moon and Sun and measured the angular diameter of the Moon with cosmic rays having energies above about 100 TeV. The shadow of the Sun shows effects attributed to the curvature of cosmic rays by the solar magnetic field. This study verifies that our direction reconstruction has no serious systematic errors, and provides a measure of the angular resolution of the array.

Diffuse gamma‐rays from molecular clouds are excellent tracers of cosmic rays in the galaxy over a wide range of energies. For example, diffuse emission detected by EGRET already places significant constraints on the spectrum and origin of galactic cosmic rays at GeV energies. Likewise, by measuring diffuse gamma rays with ground‐based air shower experiments, we can probe the galactic distribution of cosmic rays in the energy regime above 100 TeV.The Chicago Air Shower Array (CASA) which operates in coincidence with the Michigan muon array (MIA) is the world’s most sensitive experiment to gamma‐rays with energies ≳100 TeV, and is well‐suited for studies of diffuse sources based upon the muon content of air showers. We describe a search for diffuse gamma‐array emission from molecular cloud regions observed by CASA‐MIA. If we assume that the flux of cosmic rays is uniform in the galaxy, then we predict that diffuse emission will probably be detectable by CASA‐MIA within the lifetime of the experiment. Furth...

The CASA‐MIA detector was constructed to search for sources of UHE neutral radiation. As such it has established limits well below those of previously reported observations and of most contemporaneous detectors. In addition to its primary mission, however, CASA‐MIA measures the lateral distribution of both electrons and muons in EAS throughout a range of energies and with a degree of sampling not previously available.

The Chicago Air Shower Array is a large-area ground-based detector designed to observe extensive air showers produced by primary particles with energy {approx gt}100 TeV. It operates in coincidence with the underground Michigan Muon Array. Data taken during 1989 are examined for evidence of continuous and pulsed emission from localized regions of the sky. The x-ray sources Cygnus X-3, Hercules X-1, and the Crab Nebula and pulsar are examined for steady and periodic {gamma}-ray emission. To search for previously unknown compact sources, the background of cosmic rays is estimated over the sky between declinations +5{degree} and +90{degree} and enhancement is sought in small angular bins. There is no evidence for a significant excess from any of these searches, and flux limits are presented as a function of declination and muon content.

The CASA‐MIA experiment is a very large extensive air shower detector with good angular resolution. This instrument has been used to search the entire visible sky for astrophysical point sources of 100 TeV gamma rays. Approximately 90% of the isotropic charged cosmic ray background is rejected by measuring the muon content of the showers. Stringent limits are placed on the possible flux of 100 TeV sources across a large part of the Northern sky.
