The metamorphosis of 19 Atrichopogon species, 14 of which are described as new, is treated from a morphological point of view. Most of the characters that are employed in distinguishing adults of the species are of a quantitative nature and subject to great individual variation. Hence, we are forced to base the taxonomy to a great extent upon the immature stages; and yet at present the genus can be clearly separated from Forcipomyia only by adult characters. Three broad groups are distinguished on the basis of larval morphology. They are presented with the object of providing a foundation for the establishment of subgenera in the future when more material becomes available.

This species was described by Garrett (1925) from a single female taken at Cranbrook, B. C. The description of the male was added by Johannsen (1926) from specimens (1 ♂, 2 ♀ ) collected in Yellowstone Park. The life-cycle is now completed from material taken in S. E. Alaska in 1926.

The known pollinators of cacao are shown to belong to the subgenera Proforcipomyia and Thyridomyia of the genus Forcipomyia. Characters are presented for the recognition of larvae, pupae, and adults of members of these groups. The breeding grounds are reported for four potential pollinating species, which are described and figured in all stages. Methods of collecting, rearing, and studying these insects are given, including rearing on artificial cultures.

Systematists have experienced difficulty in splitting the large genus Forcipomyia into manageable groups on adult characters. The early stages in conjunction with the adults furnish a sound basis on which eight subgenera are established with description of 19 species, 17 of which are new.

The present paper deals with the strictly inter-tidal, rock-dwelling insects found in the neighborhood of the Biological Station in Departure Bay, Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, during the summer of 1927. Collections made in the late summer at Vancouver, Prince Rupert, and Ucluelet on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, revealed many of the forms already known but no new ones. The species discussed may therefore be regarded as representative of the whole coast, although further investigations are sure to prove the list incomplete.

Kieffer's genus Lasiohelea is now recognized as an association of subgenera of Forcipomyia having in common an elongated second radial cell in the wing. Tokunaga separated two of the component subgenera of this Lasiohelea complex, using adult characters. The present paper introduces the evidence of the early stages, adding six new species to the subgenus Lasiohelea, four to Neoforcipomyia, and one to Warmkea.

A new species of blood-sucking midge from Singapore is described in all stages. Although the female alone would be classified as a species of the subgenus Lasiohelea, the larva and male show such distinctive characters that a new subgenus, Dacnoforcipomyia, has been erected to accommodate this species. A detailed study of the biology is presented, and comparison is made with members of closely related subgenera.

In 1941 Irvine Fox (Canad. Ent., 73:2) stated in an article on North American Japygidae that not a single species had been reported from Canada, and no subsequent record appears in the literature. It is therefore a privilege to be able to publish the first record of the occurrence of one of these interesting insects in Canada.
