Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate ex vivo the accuracy of two fourth generation apex locators and compare the measurements obtained.Forty single and multiroots of permanent teeth (i.e., sixty-two canals) without caries or restorations were selected. After determining the real canal length using a stereomicroscope and a digital calliper, we evaluated the accuracy of two fourth generation electronic apex locators (the Bingo 1020 and the Propex) by means of an experimental study model and an endodontic simulator. The experimental model uses a digital comparator to determine the root canal length to a precision of 0.001 mm, while the endodontic simulator replicates the normal clinical condition. The difference between the real length of each canal and that obtained with the two study models was calculated.In both experiments, the Bingo 1020 expressed a 94.35% and the Propex expressed a mean accuracy of 90.31% in positioning the file at ± 0.5 mm.The Bingo 1020 and the Propex apex locators are equally accurate and provide reliable measurements in calculating root canal length.

6. Effect of unintentionally extruded mineral trioxide aggregate in treatment of root perforation with periradicular lesion: a case report

Abstract

This case report describes the effect of unintentionally extruded mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) into periradicular lesions on the prognosis of periradicular healing in maxillary right molar with periradicular lesion. A 39-year-old male patient with a periradicular lesion from the root perforation of his maxillary right first molar was referred to our Department. A root canal retreatment was performed and the root perforation was filled with MTA. During this procedure, an unintentionally extrusion of MTA into the periradicular lesion occurred. At follow-up, the tooth was asymptomatic and at radiography a repair of the lesion was evident. No endodontic surgical treatment was necessary. In this case the healing was possible despite the extrusion of the MTA. This might be due to the biologic properties of the MTA.

Abstract

The purpose of this comparative study was to evaluate possible modifications of tactility (deep and discriminative tactile sensitivity) using manual endodontic instruments equipped with traditional handles compared with innovative silicone handle versions.Sixteen subjects were selected and supplied with resin Endo-Training-Block simulators, latex gloves and manual endodontic instruments with diameters ranging from 10 to 40 mm. All instruments had traditional and silicon handles. The investigation of deep and discriminative tactile sensitivity was performed at 0, 15, 30, and 45 minutes of the manual instrumentation with an esthesiometer. We obtain each of our data from the median of three consecutive measurements. The results were then statistically analyzed thanks to the ANOVA test: P=0.003 for subjects, P0.001 for time factor, and P=0.010 for sensitivity-time interaction.We observed a better tactility with silicone handle instruments, comparing the two kinds of handle (regardless of the finger tested) as well as singly analyzing the thumb and index finger.Despite the sample limited extension, the loss of deep cutaneous and discrimination sensitivity seems to be reduced using silicone handles, most likely favoring an improvement of the working performance.

Abstract

Abstract Background A persistent low inflammatory-oxidative status and the inadequacy of the antioxidant nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) have been implicated in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) progression. Therefore this study was aimed to assess the association between lung function decline and oxidative-inflammatory markers and Nrf2 signaling pathway expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) over time. Methods 33 mild-moderate COPD outpatients (mean age 66.9 ± 6.9 years) were age-sex matched with 37 no-COPD subjects. A clinical evaluation, blood sampling tests and a spirometry were performed at baseline and after a mean follow-up of 49.7 ± 6.9 months. Results In COPD, compared to no-COPD, we found a faster lung function decline at follow-up. Although similar prevalence of smoking, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia, systemic markers of inflammation (hs-CRP and white blood cells, WBCs) and oxidative stress (8-isoprostane) were significantly increased in COPD at follow-up, while the antioxidant glutathione (GSH) was significantly reduced. Moreover the expression of Nrf2 and of Nrf2-related genes heme oxygenase (HO)-1 and glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic (GCLC) subunit in PBMCS were significantly down-regulated in COPD at follow-up, whereas no changes were observed in no-COPD. Abstract

Abstract We present possible observing scenarios for the Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA gravitational-wave detectors over the next decade, with the intention of providing information to the astronomy community to facilitate planning for multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. We estimate the sensitivity of the network to transient gravitational-wave signals, and study the capability of the network to determine the sky location of the source. We report our findings for gravitational-wave transients, with particular focus on gravitational-wave signals from the inspiral of binary neutron star systems, which are the most promising targets for multi-messenger astronomy. The ability to localize the sources of the detected signals depends on the geographical distribution of the detectors and their relative sensitivity, and $$90\%$$ 90% credible regions can be as large as thousands of square degrees when only two sensitive detectors are operational. Determining the sky position of a significant fraction of detected signals to areas of 5–$$20~\mathrm {deg}^2$$ 20deg2 requires at least three detectors of sensitivity within a factor of $$\sim 2$$ ∼2 of each other and with a broad frequency bandwidth. When all detectors, including KAGRA and the third LIGO detector in India, reach design sensitivity, a significant fraction of gravitational-wave signals will be localized to a few square degrees by gravitational-wave observations alone.

Abstract

We present the results of the search for gravitational waves (GWs) associated with γ -ray bursts detected during the first observing run of the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). We find no evidence of a GW signal for any of the 41 γ -ray bursts for which LIGO data are available with sufficient duration. For all γ -ray bursts, we place lower bounds on the distance to the source using the optimistic assumption that GWs with an energy of ${10}^{-2}{M}_{\odot }{c}^{2}$ were emitted within the $16$ – $500$ Hz band, and we find a median 90% confidence limit of 71 Mpc at 150 Hz. For the subset of 19 short/hard γ -ray bursts, we place lower bounds on distance with a median 90% confidence limit of 90 Mpc for binary neutron star (BNS) coalescences, and 150 and 139 Mpc for neutron star–black hole coalescences with spins aligned to the orbital angular momentum and in a generic configuration, respectively. These are the highest distance limits ever achieved by GW searches. We also discuss in detail the results of the search for GWs associated with GRB 150906B, an event that was localized by the InterPlanetary Network near the local galaxy NGC 3313, which is at a luminosity distance of $54$ Mpc ( z = 0.0124). Assuming the γ -ray emission is beamed with a jet half-opening angle $\leqslant 30^\circ $ , we exclude a BNS and a neutron star–black hole in NGC 3313 as the progenitor of this event with confidence >99%. Further, we exclude such progenitors up to a distance of 102 Mpc and 170 Mpc, respectively.

Abstract

This paper presents updated estimates of source parameters for GW150914, a binary black-hole coalescence event detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) in 2015 [Abbott et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 061102 (2016).]. Abbott et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 241102 (2016).] presented parameter estimation of the source using a 13-dimensional, phenomenological precessing-spin model (precessing IMRPhenom) and an 11-dimensional nonprecessing effective-one-body (EOB) model calibrated to numerical-relativity simulations, which forces spin alignment (nonprecessing EOBNR). Here, we present new results that include a 15-dimensional precessing-spin waveform model (precessing EOBNR) developed within the EOB formalism. We find good agreement with the parameters estimated previously [Abbott et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 241102 (2016).], and we quote updated component masses of 35_{-3}^{+5} M_{⊙} and 30_{-4}^{+3} M_{⊙} (where errors correspond to 90% symmetric credible intervals). We also present slightly tighter constraints on the dimensionless spin magnitudes of the two black holes, with a primary spin estimate

Abstract

The first observational run of the Advanced LIGO detectors, from September 12, 2015 to January 19, 2016, saw the first detections of gravitational waves from binary black hole mergers. In this paper, we present full results from a search for binary black hole merger signals with total masses up to 100M_{⊙} and detailed implications from our observations of these systems. Our search, based on general-relativistic models of gravitational-wave signals from binary black hole systems, unambiguously identified two signals, GW150914 and GW151226, with a significance of greater than 5σ over the observing period. It also identified a third possible signal, LVT151012, with substantially lower significance and with an 87% probability of being of astrophysical origin. We provide detailed estimates of the parameters of the observed systems. Both GW150914 and GW151226 provide an unprecedented opportunity to study the two-body motion of a compact-object binary in the large velocity, highly nonlinear regime. We do not observe any deviations from general relativity, and we place improved empirical bounds on several high-order post-Newtonian coefficients. From our observations, we infer stellar-mass binary black hole merger rates lying in the range 9–240 Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}. These observations are beginning to inform astrophysical predictions of binary black hole formation rates and indicate that future observing runs of the Advanced detector network will yield many more gravitational-wave detections.

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate ex vivo the accuracy of two fourth generation apex locators and compare the measurements obtained., Methods: Forty single and multiroots of permanent teeth (i.e., sixty-two canals) without caries or restorations were selected. After determining the real canal length using a stereomicroscope and a digital calliper, we evaluated the accuracy of two fourth generation electronic apex locators (the Bingo 1020 and the Propex) by means of an experimental study model and an endodontic simulator. The experimental model uses a digital comparator to determine the root canal length to a precision of 0.001 mm, while the endodontic simulator replicates the normal clinical condition. The difference between the real length of each canal and that obtained with the two study models was calculated., Results: In both experiments, the Bingo 1020 expressed a 94.35% and the Propex expressed a mean accuracy of 90.31% in positioning the file at ± 0.5 mm., Conclusion: The Bingo 1020 and the Propex apex locators are equally accurate and provide reliable measurements in calculating root canal length.

Abstract

This case report describes the effect of unintentionally extruded mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) into periradicular lesions on the prognosis of periradicular healing in maxillary right molar with periradicular lesion. A 39-year-old male patient with a periradicular lesion from the root perforation of his maxillary right first molar was referred to our Department. A root canal retreatment was performed and the root perforation was filled with MTA. During this procedure, an unintentionally extrusion of MTA into the periradicular lesion occurred. At follow-up, the tooth was asymptomatic and at radiography a repair of the lesion was evident. No endodontic surgical treatment was necessary. In this case the healing was possible despite the extrusion of the MTA. This might be due to the biologic properties of the MTA.

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this comparative study was to evaluate possible modifications of tactility (deep and discriminative tactile sensitivity) using manual endodontic instruments equipped with traditional handles compared with innovative silicone handle versions., Methods: Sixteen subjects were selected and supplied with resin Endo-Training-Block simulators, latex gloves and manual endodontic instruments with diameters ranging from 10 to 40 mm. All instruments had traditional and silicon handles. The investigation of deep and discriminative tactile sensitivity was performed at 0, 15, 30, and 45 minutes of the manual instrumentation with an esthesiometer. We obtain each of our data from the median of three consecutive measurements. The results were then statistically analyzed thanks to the ANOVA test: P=0.003 for subjects, P<0.001 for time factor, and P=0.010 for sensitivity-time interaction., Results: We observed a better tactility with silicone handle instruments, comparing the two kinds of handle (regardless of the finger tested) as well as singly analyzing the thumb and index finger., Conclusion: Despite the sample limited extension, the loss of deep cutaneous and discrimination sensitivity seems to be reduced using silicone handles, most likely favoring an improvement of the working performance.

19. Crystallochemical comparison between Portland cements and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA).

Abstract

Purpose: The aims of this study were to compare the crystal chemical properties of some commercial mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Portland cements (PC) and to propose a new white MTA product., Methods: The samples (four MTA and two PC types) were analyzed by 1) optical microscopy; 2) laser granulometry; 3) X-ray diffraction and fluorescence; 4) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPM) (wavelength-dispersive)., Results: MTA and PC specimens yielded similar characteristics in their clinker component. The MTA-Angelus specimens displayed a composition overlapping the classical clinker composition (wt%) i.e. 25 silica, nine alumina and 66 lime. However, the bismite, present in large amounts (~15-19 wt%) in all MTA products, contained considerable and diffused heavy (toxic) metals as Pb and Mo, other than Bi. In the MTA clinkers the formation of Portlandite, at water-clinker interface, is favored by the smaller grain size of the MTA particles. However, this may also favor the diffusion of the toxic elements linked to Bi., Significance: In terms of bulk physico-chemical properties, the MTA products can be easily substituted by a fine-grained Portland clinker by adding a non-toxic radio-opaque component, for example, Ba-carbonate.

Abstract

Aim: Prolonged contact (several hours) of nickel-titanium (NiTi) endodontic instruments with sodium hypochlorite has a considerable corrosive effect which reduces the instruments' resistance to fractures. The aim of this study was to verify whether short-term contact (several minutes, as is the case in clinical practice) produces the same effects., Methods: Using a digital scanning microscope, the blade surfaces of three groups of ProTaper instruments were examined, particularly of the #1 Shaping File. The blade's file (but not their handles) were soaked in sodium hypochlorite heated to 50 degrees C for three different times compatible with times in clinical practice, rather for 2, 5 and 10 minutes; the files were then compared with a control group., Results: The micro-photographs did not reveal any appreciable signs of corrosion on the file blades., Conclusions: It is evident, therefore, that using sodium hypochlorite as an irrigating solution in root canals, where it comes into contact with NiTi rotary endodontic instruments, does not alter the surface structure of the files through corrosion. Thus it is possible to conclude that, considering the length of time used in clinical practice, sodium hypochlorite does not cause any increase of risk of fracture to Ni-Ti rotary instruments.

Abstract

Objective: This study investigated the effects of the consumption of green tea (GT) for 7 d on biomarkers of oxidative stress in young men undergoing resistance exercise., Methods: Fourteen subjects performed a bench press exercise (four sets, 10 to 4 repetitions) after undergoing a period without (control group) or with the intake of GT (GT group; 2 g of leaves in 200 mL of water, three times per day). Blood samples were obtained before and after exercise and analyzed for total antioxidant capacity (ferric reducing ability of plasma [FRAP]), total polyphenols, reduced glutathione (GSH), lipid hydroperoxide (LH) and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, creatine kinase (CK), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), xanthine oxidase (XO), hypoxanthine, and uric acid (UA)., Results: In the control group, exercise did not affect the values of LH, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, and FRAP, although it did reduce the levels of GSH (P < 0.05). In addition, exercise increased CK, AST, and XO activities, although it did not change the values for hypoxanthine or UA. Green tea reduced the postexercise concentration of LH and increased the values of total polyphenols, GSH, and FRAP. GT also inhibited a significant rise in CK and XO activities induced by exercise. Furthermore, GT decreased the AST activity and hypoxanthine and UA concentrations before and after exercise. The assessment of food consumption revealed that the participants had an unbalanced diet, particularly in relation to vitamin E and carotenoids., Conclusion: Consumption of GT, a beverage rich in polyphenols, may offer protection against the oxidative damage caused by exercise, and dietary guidance for sports participants should be emphasized.
