Abstract: The LHCb collaboration has redesigned its trigger to enable the full offline detector reconstruction to be performed in real time. Together with the real-time alignment and calibration of the detector, and a software infrastructure to make persistent the high-level physics objects produced during real-time processing, this redesign enabled the widespread deployment of real-time analysis during Run 2. We describe the design of the Run 2 trigger and real-time reconstruction, and present data-driven performance measurements for a representative sample of LHCb's physics programme., 46 pages, 35 figures, 1 table. 2. LHCb High Level Trigger in remote IT datacentre

Abstract: In 2017 the CERN IT department and the major LHC experiments reviewed the possibility to build a common High Level Trigger facility, to share costs and for a more efficient utilization of computing resources. This paper describes a Proof-of-Concept built by the CERN IT-CS group and the LHCb online and offline teams to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposal: the dedicated, high speed connection between the LHCb detector and the IT data-centre, the setup of the servers and how they were used for offline simulation and online data taking, the different technologies considered and used, the challenges encountered and how they were tackled. The Proof of Concept exceed expectations and the remote servers were used for real data taking for more than two months during the summer 2018.

Abstract: International audience; The LHCb experiment at CERN has decided to optimise its physics reach by removing the first level hardware trigger for 2020 and beyond. In addition to requiring fully redesigned front-end electronics this design creates interesting challenges for the data-acquisition and the rest of the online computing system. Such a system can only be realized within realistic cost using as much off-the-shelf hardware as possible. Relevant technologies evolve very quickly and thus the system design is architecture-centred and tries to avoid to depend too much on specific technologies. In this paper we describe the design, the motivations for various choices and the current favoured options for the implementation, and the status of the R&D. We will cover the back-end readout, which contains the only custom-made component, the event-building, the event-filter infrastructure, and storage.

Abstract: Decays of b hadrons into final states containing a D0 meson and a muon are used to measure the b anti-b production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. In the pseudorapidity interval 2 < eta < 6 and integrated over all transverse momenta we find that the average cross-section to produce b-flavoured or anti-b-flavoured hadrons is (75.3 +/- 5.4 +/- 13.0) microbarns.

Abstract: The production of K_short mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The luminosity of the analysed sample is determined using a novel technique, involving measurements of the beam currents, sizes and positions, and is found to be 6.8 +/- 1.0 microbarn^-1. The differential prompt K_short production cross-section is measured as a function of the K_short transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < pT < 1.6 GeV/c and 2.5 < y < 4.0. The data are found to be in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and generator expectations.

Abstract: International audience; The LHCb Experiment is a hadronic precision experiment at the LHC accelerator aimed at mainly studying b-physics by profiting from the large b-anti-b-production at LHC. The challenge of high trigger efficiency has driven the choice of a readout architecture allowing the main event filtering to be performed by a software trigger with access to all detector information on a processing farm based on commercial multi-core PCs. The readout architecture therefore features only a relatively relaxed hardware trigger with a fixed and short latency accepting events at 1 MHz out of a nominal proton collision rate of 30 MHz, and high bandwidth with event fragment assembly over Gigabit Ethernet. A fast central system performs the entire synchronization, event labelling and control of the readout, as well as event management including destination control, dynamic load balancing of the readout network and the farm, and handling of special events for calibrations and luminosity measurements. The event filter farm processes the events in parallel and reduces the physics event rate to about 2 kHz which are formatted and written to disk before transfer to the offline processing. A spy mechanism allows processing and reconstructing a fraction of the events for online quality checking. In addition a 5 Hz subset of the events are sent as express stream to offline for checking calibrations and software before launching the full offline processing on the main event stream. In this paper, we will give an overview of the readout system, and describe the real-time event management and the experience with the system during the commissioning phase with cosmic rays and first LHC beams.

The challenge of a high trigger efficiency has driven the choice of a readout architecture allowing the main event filtering to be performed by a software trigger with access to all detector information on a processing farm based on commercial multicore PCs. The readout architecture therefore features only a relatively relaxed hardware trigger with a fixed and short latency accepting events at 1 MHz out of a nominal proton collision rate of 30 MHz, and high bandwidth with event fragment assembly over Gigabit Ethernet. A fast central system performs the entire synchronization, event labelling and control of the readout, as well as event management including destination control, dynamic load balancing of the readout network and the farm, and handling of special events for calibrations and luminosity measurements. The event filter farm processes the events in parellel and reduces the physics event rate to about 2 kHz which are formatted and written to disk before transfer to the offline processing. A spy mechanism allows processing and reconstructing a fraction of the events for online quality checking. In addition a 5 Hz subset of the events are sent as express stream to offline for checking calibrations and software before launching the full offline processing on the main event stream. In this paper, we will give an overview of the readout system and describe the real-time event management, and the experience with the system during the commissioning phase with cosmics and first LHC beams.

Abstract: The first level trigger of LHCb accepts one million events per second. After preprocessing in custom FPGA-based boards these events are distributed to a large farm of PC-servers using a high-speed Gigabit Ethernet network. Synchronisation and event management is achieved by the Timing and Trigger system of LHCb. Due to the complex nature of the selection of B-events, which are the main interest of LHCb, a full event-readout is required. Event processing on the servers is parallelised on an event basis. The reduction factor is typically 1/500. The remaining events are forwarded to a formatting layer, where the raw data files are formed and temporarily stored. A small part of the events is also forwarded to a dedicated farm for calibration and monitoring. The files are subsequently shipped to the CERN Tier0 facility for permanent storage and from there to the various Tier1 sites for reconstruction. In parallel files are used by various monitoring and calibration processes running within the LHCb Online system. The entire data-flow is controlled and configured by means of a SCADA system and several databases. After an overview of the LHCb data acquisition and its design principles this paper will emphasize the LHCb event filter system, which is now implemented using the final hardware and will be ready for data-taking for the LHC startup. Control, configuration and security aspects will also be discussed.

Abstract: A log is recording of system's activity, aimed to help system administrator to traceback an attack, find the causes of a malfunction and generally with troubleshooting. The fact that logs are the only information an administrator may have for an incident, makes logging system a crucial part of an IT infrastructure. In large scale infrastructures, such as LHCb Online, where quite a few GB of logs are produced daily, it is impossible for a human to review all of these logs. Moreover, a great percentage of them as just "noise". That makes clear that a more automated and sophisticated approach is needed. In this paper, we present a low-cost centralized logging system which allow us to do in-depth analysis of every log.

Abstract: The LHCb Data Acquisition system reads data from over 300 read-out boards and distributes them to more than 1500 event-filter servers. It uses a simple push-protocol over Gigabit Ethernet. After filtering, the data is consolidated into files for permanent storage using a SAN-based storage system. Since the beginning of data-taking many lessons have been learned and the reliability and robustness of the system has been greatly improved. We report on these changes and improvements, their motivation and how we intend to develop the system for Run 2. We also will report on how we try to optimise the usage of CPU resources during the running of the LHC (deferred triggering) and the implications on the data acquisition.

Abstract: The upgraded LHCb experiment, which is supposed to go into operation in 2018/19 will require a massive increase in its computer facilities. A new 2 MW data-centre is planned at the LHCb site. Apart from the obvious requirement of minimizing the cost, the data-centre has to tie in well with the needs of online processing, while at the same time staying open for future and offline use. We present our design and the evaluation process for different site options.

Abstract: Virtualization has long been advertised by the IT-industry as a way to cut down cost, optimise resource usage and manage the complexity in large data-centers. The great number and the huge heterogeneity of hardware, both industrial and custom-made, has up to now led to reluctance in the adoption of virtualization in the IT infrastructure of large experiment installations. Our experience in the LHCb experiment has shown that virtualization improves the availability and the manageability of the whole system. We have done an evaluation of available hypervisors / virtualization solutions and find that the Microsoft HV technology provides a high level of maturity and flexibility for our purpose. We present the results of these comparison tests, describing in detail, the architecture of our virtualization infrastructure with a special emphasis on the security for services visible to the outside world. Security is achieved by a sophisticated combination of VLANs, firewalls and virtual routing - the cost and benefits of this solution are analysed. We have adapted our cluster management tools, notably Quattor, for the needs of virtual machines and this allows us to migrate smoothly services on physical machines to the virtualized infrastructure. The procedures for migration will also be described. In the final part of the document we describe our recent R&D activities aiming to replacing the SAN-backend for the virtualization by a cheaper iSCSI solution - this will allow to move all servers and related services to the virtualized infrastructure, excepting the ones doing hardware control via non-commodity PCI plugin cards.

Abstract: During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised., Comment: v2: 180 pages; many figures. Abstract: The production of K_short mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The luminosity of the analysed sample is determined using a novel technique, involving measurements of the beam currents, sizes and positions, and is found to be 6.8 +/- 1.0 microbarn^-1. The differential prompt K_short production cross-section is measured as a function of the K_short transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < pT < 1.6 GeV/c and 2.5 < y < 4.0. The data are found to be in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and generator expectations., 6+18 pages, 6 figures, updated author list

Abstract: Decays of b hadrons into final states containing a D0 meson and a muon are used to measure the b anti-b production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. In the pseudorapidity interval 2 < eta < 6 and integrated over all transverse momenta we find that the average cross-section to produce b-flavoured or anti-b-flavoured hadrons is (75.3 +/- 5.4 +/- 13.0) microbarns., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Physics Lett.
