Abstract: Variability in SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and COVID-19 disease severity between individuals is partly due to genetic factors. Here, we identify 4 genomic loci with suggestive associations for SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and 19 for COVID-19 disease severity. Four of these 23 loci likely have an ethnicity-specific component. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) signals in 11 loci colocalize with expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) associated with the expression of 20 genes in 62 tissues/cell types (range: 1:43 tissues/gene), including lung, brain, heart, muscle, and skin as well as the digestive system and immune system. We perform genetic fine mapping to compute 99% credible SNP sets, which identify 10 GWAS loci that have eight or fewer SNPs in the credible set, including three loci with one single likely causal SNP. Our study suggests that the diverse symptoms and disease severity of COVID-19 observed between individuals is associated with variants across the genome, affecting gene expression levels in a wide variety of tissue types., Graphical abstract, D’Antonio et al. characterize associations between GWAS signals for COVID-19 disease and eQTLs in 69 human tissues to identify causal variants and their underlying molecular mechanisms. They show that diverse symptoms and disease severity of COVID-19 are associated with variants affecting gene expression in a wide variety of tissues.

Abstract: Accurately determining renal function is essential for clinical management of HIV patients. Classically, it has been evaluated by estimating glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with the MDRD-equation, but today there is evidence that the new Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation has greater diagnostic accuracy. To date, however, little information exists on patients with HIV-infection. This study aimed to evaluate eGFR by CKD-EPI vs. MDRD equations and to stratify renal function according to KDIGO guidelines. Methods: Cross-sectional, single center study including adult patients with HIV-infection. Results: Four thousand five hundred three patients with HIV-infection (864 women; 19%) were examined. Median age was 45 years (IQR 37–52), and median baseline creatinine was 0.93 mg/dL (IQR 0.82–1.05). A similar distribution of absolute measures of eGFR was found using both formulas (p = 0.548). Baseline median eGFR was 95.2 and 90.4 mL/min/1.73 m2 for CKD-EPI and MDRD equations (p 90 mL/min/1.73 m2) in 73% patients and “mild reduced GFR” (60–89 mL/min/1.73 m2) in 24.3% of the patients, formerly classified as >60 mL/min/1.73 m2 with MDRD. Conclusions: There was good correlation between CKD-EPI and MDRD. Estimating renal function using CKD-EPI equation allowed better staging of renal function and should be considered the method of choice. CKD-EPI identified a significant proportion of patients (24%) with mild reduced GFR (60–89 mL/min/1.73 m2)

Abstract: Iris spp. rhizomes are used in cosmetics and perfumery thanks to the presence of irones, violet-scented ketonic compounds. Between the several Iris species, Iris pallida Lam. is rich in irones and is the most valuable. In Tuscany, the cultivation of I. pallid is an integral part of the rural tradition. The aim of the research is to study the possibility of producing I. pallid plants by micropropagation and to overcome some critical factors of traditional cultivation. This study was based on the induction of somatic embryogenesis from flower buds and from leaf tissues of in vitro plantlets. Results demonstrated that the most suitable factors to begin the induction of embryogenic callus were the medium, a modified MS medium named i1B containing 0.1 mg L-1 Kinetin (Kin) and 1 mg L-1 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D), and the explant, the petal hafts (the base of the petals) of the flower buds. Another medium, named i1A, containing 1 mg L-1 Kin and 1 mg L-1 2,4-D was the most appropriate for the successive subcultures of the embryogenic callus among the tested ones. To induce and maintain embryo formation, an expression medium, named i2, containing a modified Knudson C macro elements, 1 mg L-1 Kin and 0.1 mg L-1 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) was efficient. The protocol was subsequently improved with the use of in vitro microplant leaf tissues for the production of embryogenic callus. Transferring the embryos onto a modified MS medium named i3 with 0.1 mg L-1 of 6-benzyladenine (BA) and ?-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), allowed us to obtain microplants to acclimatize ex vitro. As regards the presence of irones precursors, the HPLC chromatographic profile of the rhizomes from micropropagated I. pallida plants after acclimatization in open field, was comparable to that of rhizomes from mother plants cultivated in the place of origin.

Abstract: OBJECTIVES Recording techniques permit the separate analysis of the response from cauda equina roots and the spinal potential that is probably generated by the activation of dorsal horn cells. To improve the functional assessment of focal lesions of the lumbosacral cord, lower limb somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were measured by multisegmental stimulation. METHODS Common peroneal and tibial nerves SEPs were recorded in 14 patients in whom MRI demonstrated compressive cord damage ranging from T9 to L1 levels. SEPs were recorded in each patient at the lumbar level (cauda equina response), lower thoracic level (spinal response), and from the scalp (cortical response). RESULTS Abnormalities in spinal response occurred in 50% and 70% of tibial and common peroneal nerve SEPs respectively; these findings were well explained by the radiological compression level, involving in most of the patients lumbar rather than sacral myelomeres. The SEPs were often more effective than the clinical examination in showing the actual extension of damage. CONCLUSIONS The recording of spinal SEPs after multisegmental lower limb stimulation proved useful in assessing cord dysfunction and determining the cord levels mainly involved by the compression.

6. Correlated component analysis for diffuse component separation with error estimation on simulated Planck polarization data

Abstract: We present a data analysis pipeline for cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments, running from multifrequency maps to the power spectra. We focus mainly on component separation and, for the first time, we work out the covariance matrix accounting for errors associated with the separation itself. This allows us to propagate such errors and evaluate their contributions to the uncertainties on the final products. The pipeline is optimized for intermediate and small scales, but could be easily extended to lower multipoles. We exploit realistic simulations of the sky, tailored for the Planck mission. The component separation is achieved by exploiting the correlated component analysis in the harmonic domain, which we demonstrate to be superior to the real-space application. We present two techniques to estimate the uncertainties on the spectral parameters of the separated components. The component separation errors are then propagated by means of Monte Carlo simulations to obtain the corresponding contributions to uncertainties on the component maps and on the CMB power spectra. For the Planck polarization case they are found to be subdominant compared to noise.

Abstract: The restoration of blurred noisy images can be formulated, using the regularization theory, as a constrained optimization problem. According to the classical approach, based on the Lagrange multipliers theory, the exact solution of this problem is obtained iteratively by solving several minimization problems of very large dimensions. This involves enormous computation costs. In this paper, an alternative method, based on the primal-dual theory of convex optimization, is proposed; the original problem is reformulated in an equivalent form so that the related dual problem can be solved through a single unconstrained maximization. The solution of the original problem is then related to the solution of the dual problem via a simple model which depends on the particular cost functional adopted.

8. Relations between on-off phenomena and cognitive functions in Parkinson disease

Abstract: 10 patients with Parkinson disease on long term levodopa therapy and with fluctuations in motor performance unrelated to drug administration (on-off phenomena) were assessed on the following neuropsychological tests during the on and off phases: tests of attention (Toulouse-Pieron), memory (Digit Span, Rey forms 1 and 2), psychomotor capacity (maze test, single and multiple choice reaction times) and mood (Maudley Adjective Check List). The extrapyramidal symptoms were assessed on the Webster Rating Scale. We found no significant differences in attention, cognitive performance or mood between the on and off phases despite large fluctuations in motor performance.

Abstract: We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130◦ ≤ l ≤ 230◦ and −50◦ ≤ b ≤ −10◦). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us improve our knowledge of the Galactic emission. Free-free emission and anomalous microwave emission (AME) are the dominant components at low frequencies (ν < 40 GHz), while synchrotron emission is very smooth and faint. We separated diffuse free-free emission and AME from synchrotron emission and thermal dust emission by using Planck data, complemented by ancillary data, using the correlated component analysis (CCA) component-separation method and we compared our results with the results of cross-correlation of foreground templates with the frequency maps. We estimated the electron temperature Te from Hα and free-free emission using two methods (temperature-temperature plot and cross-correlation) and obtained Te ranging from 3100 to 5200 K for an effective fraction of absorbing dust along the line of sight of 30% ( fd = 0.3). We estimated the frequency spectrum of the diffuse AME and recovered a peak frequency (in flux density units) of 25.5±1.5 GHz.We verified the reliability of this result with realistic simulations that include biases in the spectral model for the AME and in the free-free template. 10. [Exposure to crystalline silica in the air during renovation of residential buildings]

Abstract: Exposure to respirable cristalline silica dust during construction activities can cause silicosis and, in accordance with International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), even lung cancer. Among the different facets of construction, residential buildings are of particular interest because the lack of exposure data for workers employed. In this sector a dry sand-blasting of brick ceiling and renewal activities has been investigated. The survey has been carried out in a civil dwelling and 58 samples have been collected using the SKC aluminium cyclone and Door-Oliver plastic cyclone at flow-rate 2.2-1.7 l/min. The respirable dust samples were analysed by x-ray diffraction using NIOSH Method 7500. Even if the results of this study should be considered preliminary, they showed SLC respirable concentrations even many time above TLV-TWA during a sand-blasting activities and some times also during the other activities. Awaiting the correct classification from European Community, it would be desiderable that the workers would had appropriate information and prevention on the specific risks associated to the dust in the construction activities.

Abstract: We present the first tests of a new method, the Correlated Component Analysis (CCA) based on second-order statistics, to estimate the mixing matrix, a key ingredient to separate astrophysical foregrounds superimposed to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). In the present application, the mixing matrix is parameterized in terms of the spectral indices of Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emissions, while the free-free spectral index is prescribed by basic physics, and is thus assumed to be known. We consider simulated observations of the microwave sky with angular resolution and white stationary noise at the nominal levels for the PLANCK satellite, and realistic foreground emissions, with a position dependent synchrotron spectral index. We work with two sets of PLANCK frequency channels: the low frequency set, from 30 to 143 GHz, complemented with the Haslam 408 MHz map, and the high frequency set, from 217 to 545 GHz. The concentration of intense free-free emission on the Galactic plane introduces a steep dependence of the spectral index of the global Galactic emission with Galactic latitude, close to the Galactic equator. This feature makes difficult for the CCA to recover the synchrotron spectral index in this region, given the limited angular resolution of PLANCK, especially at low frequencies. 12. Activity of phosphoglycerate mutase and its isoenzymes in serum after acute myocardial infarction

Abstract: Aims/background —In humans there are three phosphoglycerate mutase (PGM, EC 5.4.12.1) isoenzymes (MM, MB and BB) which have similar distribution and developmental pathways to creatine kinase (CK, EC 2.7.3.2) isoenzymes. Total serum PGM activity increases in acute myocardial infarction with the same time course as creatine kinase activity. The present study was undertaken to determine changes in the activity of PGM and its isoenzymes after acute myocardial infarction. Methods —PGM activity was measured spectrophotometrically, by coupling the formation of 2-phosphoglycerate from 3-phosphoglycerate with enolase, pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase catalysed reactions. Inter- and intra-assay reproducibility was assessed. PGM isoenzyme activities were measured using cellulose acetate electrophoresis. Results —Total PGM activity in serum was increased in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. PGM activity peaked 12 to 24 hours after the onset of symptoms and returned to normal values within 48 hours. Electrophoretic analysis of serum from healthy subjects showed a band corresponding to BB-PGM and two other artefactual bands that did not correspond to adenylate kinase. After myocardial infarction, BB-PGM activity increased and MB-PGM and MM-PGM could be detected. On immunoblot analysis, normal serum contained an inactive form of MM-PGM with a smaller molecular weight than that of PGM tissue isoenzymes. Conclusions —Total serum PGM activity increased in patients with acute myocardial infarction, following the same temporal course as creatine kinase activity. The increase in MM-PGM and MB-PGM activities in these patients was not as high as expected. It is suggested that PGM isoenzymes, after release into the blood, undergo postsynthetic, probably proteolytic, transformation.

Up to now, all work on separation of components in astrophysical maps have assumed statistically independent sources. In this work, we attempt to perform a dependent component analysis of astrophysical sources and we propose a semi-blind algorithm which provides separation using second-order statistics only.

Abstract: Character segmentation, which is a fundamental preliminary step for character recognition, is particularly critical in the case of ancient printed documents, where several degradation processes may cause the characters to touch and merge one another. In the paper the problem of character segmentation is formulated as the minimization of a cost function which accounts for data consistency and expresses both radiometric constraints on the image gray levels and geometrical constraints on the character boundaries. Since the degradation operator, which derives from several and diverse factors, is also unknown, it must be estimated along with the segmented image. Hence, we propose a solution strategy where steps of image estimation iteratively alternate with steps of estimation for the degradation operator. Results of both simulated and real experiments are shown to validate the method. © 1999 IEEE.

Abstract: This paper deals with discontinuity-adaptive smoothing for recovering degraded images, when Markov random field models with explicit lines are used, but no a priori information about the free parameters of the related Gibbs distributions is available. The adopted approach is based on the maximization of the posterior distribution with respect to the line field and the Gibbs parameters, while the intensity field is assumed to be clamped to the maximizer of the posterior itself, conditioned on the lines and the parameters. This enables the application of a mixed-annealing algorithm for the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation of the image field, and of Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques, over binary variables only, for the simultaneous maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters. A practical procedure is then derived which is nearly as fast as a MAP image reconstruction by mixed-annealing with known Gibbs parameters. We derive the method for the general case of a linear degradation process plus superposition of additive noise, and experimentally validate it for the sub-case of image denoising.

Abstract: We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130 degrees <= l <= 230 degrees and -50 degrees <= b <= -10 degrees). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us improve our knowledge of the Galactic emission. Free-free emission and anomalous microwave emission (AME) are the dominant components at low frequencies (nu < 40 GHz), while synchrotron emission is very smooth and faint. We separated diffuse free-free emission and AME from synchrotron emission and thermal dust emission by using Planck data, complemented by ancillary data, using the correlated component analysis (CCA) component-separation method and we compared our results with the results of cross-correlation of foreground templates with the frequency maps. We estimated the electron temperature T-e from Ha and free-free emission using two methods (temperature-temperature plot and cross-correlation) and obtained T-e ranging from 3100 to 5200 K for an effective fraction of absorbing dust along the line of sight of 30% (f(d) = 0.3). We estimated the frequency spectrum of the diffuse AME and recovered a peak frequency (in flux density units) of 25.5 +/- 1.5 GHz. We verified the reliability of this result with realistic simulations that include biases in the spectral model for the AME and in the free-free template. By combining physical models for vibrational and rotational dust emission and adding the constraints from the thermal dust spectrum from Planck and IRAS, we are able to present a good description of the AME frequency spectrum for plausible values of the local density and radiation field.

Abstract: In the Bayesian approach, using Markov random field (MRF) models, prior knowledge is incorporated into the problem via a parametric Gibbs prior, and the solution is obtained by minimizing the resulting posterior energy function. There are two major difficulties with this approach: the non-convexity of the function to be optimized and the choice of the MRF model parameters that best fit the available prior knowledge. Since these parameters affect the quality of the reconstruction considerably, selecting them is a very critical task. This paper deals with the restoration of piecewise smooth images. A trained generalized Boltzmann machine can then be used in connection with a Hopfield analogue circuit to implement a mixed-annealing scheme for the minimization of the non-convex posterior energy.

Abstract: We present a new, fast, algorithm for the separation of astrophysical components superposed in maps of the sky, based on the fast Independent Component Analysis technique (FastICA). It allows to recover both the spatial pattern and the frequency scalings of the emissions from statistically independent astrophysical processes, present along the line-of-sight, from multi-frequency observations. We apply FastICA to simulated observations of the microwave sky with angular resolution and instrumental noise at the mean nominal levels for the Planck satellite, containing the most important known diffuse signals: the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), Galactic synchrotron, dust and free-free emissions. A method for calibrating the reconstructed maps of each component at each frequency has been devised. The spatial pattern of all the components have been recovered on all scales probed by the instrument. In particular, the CMB angular power spectra is recovered at the percent level up to $\ell_{max}\simeq 2000$. Frequency scalings and normalization have been recovered with better than percent precision for all the components at frequencies and in sky regions where their signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 1.5; the error increases at ten percent level for signal-to-noise ratios about 1. Runs have been performed on a Pentium III 600 MHz computer; FastICA typically took a time of the order of 10 minutes for all-sky simulations with 3.5 arcminutes pixel size. Abstract: In a case-controlled study, serum creatinine kinase (CK) activity was significantly lower in 40 patients with RA than in 40 age- and sex-matched patients with non-inflammatory arthropathies [mean 37.6 (S.D. 29.2) vs 77.7 (S.D. 45.3) IU/l respectively P < 0.0001]. In contrast, serum levels of aldolase and myosin were not significantly lower in RA patients. A significant inverse correlation between CK activity and ESR, CRP and platelet count was observed in RA. There was also a positive correlation between haemoglobin levels and CK values. No correlation was found between CK activity and a meager mass index, disease duration and radiological erosion. No inhibitor of CK activity in the sera of RA patients was found. CK serum activity was markedly reduced in RA, and is related to the inflammatory activity of the disease. This finding may stimulate further exploration on the effect of inflammatory response in muscle metabolism.

Abstract: TAG-72 is a tumor-associated antigen identified by the monoclonal antibody B72.3. Serum levels of TAG-72 were measured in patients with non-malignant and malignant disease. TAG-72 is not a specific marker of cancer and slightly elevated levels of this antigen can also be detected in the serum of healthy subjects. However, our results show that specificity (92%) and positive predictive value (86%) of this marker are very high. TAG-72 levels above the cut-off limit of 6 U/mL were found in patients with tumors of various organs, including gastrointestinal, ovarian, lung and breast cancer. TAG-72 assay sensitivity is related to tumor stage with values being highest with advanced disease, especially in patients with gastric cancer and lung adenocarcinoma.

23. Separation of Correlated Astrophysical Sources Using Multiple-Lag Data Covariance Matrices.

Abstract: This paper proposes a new strategy to separate astrophysical sources that are mutually correlated. This strategy is based on second-order statistics and exploits prior information about the possible structure of the mixing matrix. Unlike ICA blind separation approaches, where the sources are assumed mutually independent and no prior knowledge is assumed about the mixing matrix, our strategy allows the independence assumption to be relaxed and performs the separation of even significantly correlated sources. Besides the mixing matrix, our strategy is also capable to evaluate the source covariance functions at several lags. Moreover, once the mixing parameters have beenidentified, a simple deconvolution can be used to estimate the probability density functions of the source processes. To benchmark our algorithm, we used a database that simulates the one expected from the instruments that will operate onboard ESA's Planck Surveyor Satellite to measure the CMB anisotropies all over the celestial sphere. Abstract: A suitable test for the characterization of the Autonomie Nervous System state is the orthoclinostatic test. The heart rate beat to beat is recorded in both ortho- and clino-positions and during both the ortho-to-clino and clino-to-ortho transitions; the resulting curve was named rythmocardiogram (RCG). In order to classify the ECG and the ortho- and clino-measurec arterial pressures and to correlate them with several physiological conditions, a computer program has been implemented. The program parametrizes the RCG by recognizing several points representing: a) onset and offset of the four phases; b) morphology of transition tracts; c) linear approximation of the two steady states. Up to 260 morphological parameters are derived for each RCG. A population of one thousand subjects have been studied. Points, derived parameters and anthropometric and clinical data of subjects have been introduced in a permanently stored data bank. The results of their classification are also discussed in order to reduce the number of parameters and select the most suitable ones.

The system software is easy to modify to fit the requirements of several types of biological experiments or clinical measurements. Abstract: We have evaluated the analytic performance of a new immunonephelometric method developed for the measurement of amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein (AF-AFP) and compared it with the classic immunoradiometric method used up to now. Intrassay precision, evaluated for three AF-AFP levels, was good and Interassay imprecision shows higher coefficients of variation (CVs) especially for medium and high AF-AFP levels. Linearity was demonstrated for level higher than 300,000 ng/ml and no hook effects was observed. Comparison with an IRMA method gave the following regression equation: y = 3050 + 0.52X (r = 0.76, p less than 0.001, n = 36).

30. Generalised crosscorrelator with data-estimated weighting function: a simulation analysis

Abstract: The distinctive feature of a generalised crosscorrelator (GCC) over a conventional one is the presence of a filtering section which enables it to enhance its performance according to some optimality criterion. This section provides a weighting action on the crosspower density spectrum of the input signals and, if properly designed, can improve the estimate of the time delay existing between waveforms generated by a single acoustic source and received at two spatially separate sensors. An assumption which is commonly made on the weighting window is that it is exactly matched to signal and noise spectral characteristics, that are supposedly known a priori. Unfortunately this does not happen in most practical situations, and the only means to acquire knowledge about the spectral characteristics of signal and noises is estimating them from the received waveforms. Since this operation is expected to degrade the GCC performance, an analysis of these degradations is called for. This work focuses on the analysis of the performance attainable with a particular window, namely the Hassab-Boucher-II (HBII) window, in the assumption that all necessary spectra are estimated from finite segments of the observed input signals. The selected window theoretically exhibits a good capability to combat the ambiguity effect produced by strong sinusoidal components affecting the signal. On the other hand, it has also been shown that this window performs reasonably well in the presence of broadband noise alone. For comparison purposes, the analysis has been carried out with simulated signals in three different crosscorrelator configurations: (i) GCC employing the Hassab-Boucher-II window calculated exactly on the basis of the a priori knowledge of signal and noise spectral characteristics, (ii) GCC employing the Hassab-Boucher-II window calculated on the basis of the spectral characteristics estimated from a finite record of signals, and (iii) conventional crosscorrelator. In each configuration the mean and the variance of the measured delay have been estimated; the results are discussed and compared with the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). The performance of the three configurations is also analysed in the presence of a sinusoidal component affecting both inputs, which simulates a strong narrowband signal.

32. The Experiences of African American Male Caregivers.

Abstract: Aging of the population has led to an increasing number of caregivers. While research has been conducted on caregiver experiences, less is known about the experiences of African American males in the U.S. This qualitative descriptive study describes the experiences of 13 African American men who acted as caregivers to adult chronically ill or debilitated loved ones, the majority of whom provided care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The revised Sociocultural Stress and Coping Model (R-SSCM) guided this study. Individual interviews were conducted via the Zoom application. Content analysis revealed four themes: (1) "My time to take the reins", (2) "It's a male thang", (3) "Caring amid a pandemic", and (4) "Effects of the caregiver's journey". This study's findings in relation to the literature provide overdue attention to the African American male caregiving experience, especially in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. The implications of our findings include the need for more culturally congruent support services for African American male caregivers, as well as increased efforts to encourage trust in the healthcare system-especially in relation to vaccination for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

33. Production of Curcuminoids in different in vitro organs of Curcuma longa.

Abstract: Curcuma longa L. (turmeric) is one of the most important spice and safe food additives. Its main constituents, curcuminoids, showed anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antioxidant effects. In the present work, an in vitro propagation method was developed to achieve selected plant organs with quantified curcuminoid content. In vitro plants were obtained from sprouting buds as primary explants. The major curcuminoid constituents, such as curcumin (CUR), demethoxycurcumin (DEM), and bis-demethoxycurcumin (bis-DEM) were examined in different organs by LC-DAD-ESI-MS. A significant production of curcumin (more than 260 microg g(-1) fresh weight) was obtained from in vitro microrhizomes, especially grown in a Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) supplemented with kinetin (0.1 mg L((-1)), alpha-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA, 1 mg L(-1)), sucrose (6%), agar (5%) and activated charcoal (0.1%). The analyzed microrhizomes showed reduced amounts of DEM and bis-DEM in comparison with CUR levels. In addition a shoot culture line was suitable to biosynthesize curcuminoids, in a ratio very similar to that identified in the fresh rhizomes of parent plants. This study represents the first direct quantification of curcuminoids in turmeric in vitro shoots and microrhizomes to be used in dietary supplements.

Abstract: Exposure to respirable cristalline silica dust during construction activities can cause silicosis and, in accordance with International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), even lung cancer. Among the different facets of construction, residential buildings are of particular interest because the lack of exposure data for workers employed. In this sector a dry sand-blasting of brick ceiling and renewal activities has been investigated. The survey has been carried out in a civil dwelling and 58 samples have been collected using the SKC aluminium cyclone and Door-Oliver plastic cyclone at flow-rate 2.2-1.7 l/min. The respirable dust samples were analysed by x-ray diffraction using NIOSH Method 7500. Even if the results of this study should be considered preliminary, they showed SLC respirable concentrations even many time above TLV-TWA during a sand-blasting activities and some times also during the other activities. Awaiting the correct classification from European Community, it would be desiderable that the workers would had appropriate information and prevention on the specific risks associated to the dust in the construction activities.

Abstract: This paper deals with blind separation of images from noisy linear mixtures with unknown coefficients, formulated as a Bayesian estimation problem. This is a flexible framework, where any kind of prior knowledge about the source images and the mixing matrix can be accounted for. In particular, we describe local correlation within the individual images through the use of Markov random field (MRF) image models. These are naturally suited to express the joint pdf of the sources in a factorized form, so that the statistical independence requirements of most independent component analysis approaches to blind source separation are retained. Our model also includes edge variables to preserve intensity discontinuities. MRF models have been proved to be very efficient in many visual reconstruction problems, such as blind image restoration, and allow separation and edge detection to be performed simultaneously. We propose an expectation-maximization algorithm with the mean field approximation to derive a procedure for estimating the mixing matrix, the sources, and their edge maps. We tested this procedure on both synthetic and real images, in the fully blind case (i.e., no prior information on mixing is exploited) and found that a source model accounting for local autocorrelation is able to increase robustness against noise, even space variant. Furthermore, when the model closely fits the source characteristics, independence is no longer a strict requirement, and cross-correlated sources can be separated, as well.

Abstract: Since 1990, a cohort survey has been carried out among workers employed in pottery workers by the Local Health Unit of Viterbo, Latium (Italy). Cumulative exposure to silica containing dust has been assessed for 808 workers, who were also screened with a questionnaire on respiratory symptoms, chest radiography and lungfunction tests. The prevalence of small opacities 1/0 and 1/1+ was 3.0% and 4.1% respectively and the prevalence increased with the cumulative exposure. A close relationship has been found between silica dose and decrease in lung function.

37. Source separation in astrophysical maps using independent factor analysis.

Abstract: A microwave sky map results from a combination of signals from various astrophysical sources, such as cosmic microwave background radiation, synchrotron radiation and galactic dust radiation. To derive information about these sources, one needs to separate them from the measured maps on different frequency channels. Our insufficient knowledge of the weights to be given to the individual signals at different frequencies makes this a difficult task. Recent work on the problem led to only limited success due to ignoring the noise and to the lack of a suitable statistical model for the sources. In this paper, we derive the statistical distribution of some source realizations, and check the appropriateness of a Gaussian mixture model for them. A source separation technique, namely, independent factor analysis, has been suggested recently in the literature for Gaussian mixture sources in the presence of noise. This technique employs a three layered neural network architecture which allows a simple, hierarchical treatment of the problem. We modify the algorithm proposed in the literature to accommodate for space-varying noise and test its performance on simulated astrophysical maps. We also compare the performances of an expectation-maximization and a simulated annealing learning algorithm in estimating the mixture matrix and the source model parameters. The problem with expectation-maximization is that it does not ensure global optimization, and thus the choice of the starting point is a critical task. Indeed, we did not succeed to reach good solutions for random initializations of the algorithm. Conversely, our experiments with simulated annealing yielded initialization-independent results. The mixing matrix and the means and coefficients in the source model were estimated with a good accuracy while some of the variances of the components in the mixture model were not estimated satisfactorily.

Abstract: Objectives: Recording techniques permit the separate analysis of the response from cauda equina roots and the spinal potential that is probably generated by the activation of dorsal horn cells. To improve the functional assessment of focal lesions of the lumbosacral cord, lower limb somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were measured by multisegmental stimulation., Methods: Common peroneal and tibial nerves SEPs were recorded in 14 patients in whom MRI demonstrated compressive cord damage ranging from T9 to L1 levels. SEPs were recorded in each patient at the lumbar level (cauda equina response), lower thoracic level (spinal response), and from the scalp (cortical response)., Results: Abnormalities in spinal response occurred in 50% and 70% of tibial and common peroneal nerve SEPs respectively; these findings were well explained by the radiological compression level, involving in most of the patients lumbar rather than sacral myelomeres. The SEPs were often more effective than the clinical examination in showing the actual extension of damage., Conclusions: The recording of spinal SEPs after multisegmental lower limb stimulation proved useful in assessing cord dysfunction and determining the cord levels mainly involved by the compression.

Abstract: 10 patients with Parkinson disease on long term levodopa therapy and with fluctuations in motor performance unrelated to drug administration (on-off phenomena) were assessed on the following neuropsychological tests during the on and off phases: tests of attention (Toulouse-Pieron), memory (Digit Span, Rey forms 1 and 2), psychomotor capacity (maze test, single and multiple choice reaction times) and mood (Maudley Adjective Check List). The extrapyramidal symptoms were assessed on the Webster Rating Scale. We found no significant differences in attention, cognitive performance or mood between the on and off phases despite large fluctuations in motor performance.

Abstract: Seventy-five biopsy samples from patients with chronic renal disorders were examined by the usual techniques of light microscopy and immunofluorescence; in fifteen patients IgA nephropathy was found. These patients were young adults; the onset of the disease was characterized by macrohematuria, and recurrent episodes of hematuria were observed. Histological examination revealed proliferative endothelio-mesangial glomerulonephritis at various stages of development with focal or diffuse patterns; immunofluorescence revealed constant and intense positive reactions for IgA mainly in association with C3. It is assumed that there is a relationship connecting the more advanced histological changes, a more severe clinical course and the presence of IgM deposits.

Abstract: The effects of Rolipram, a new phosphodiesterase inhibitor, were assessed in a double-blind trial versus placebo in 10 patients with Parkinson's disease already under treatment. Contrary to previous findings with specific phosphodiesterase inhibitors, with Rolipram (at the dose of 3 mg per day), no significant deterioration of the therapeutic action of dopamine agonist Lisuride was noted.
