1. SOURCE, a VUV-UV synchrotron radiation beamline for space optics tests at the DAΦNE-light INFN-LNF

Abstract

DAΦNE-Light is the Synchrotron Radiation Facility at the INFN-Frascati National Laboratory (Rome, Italy). The synchrotron radiation (SR) beam from a wiggler installed on the DAΦNE storage ring is split by a grazing incidence Au-coated mirror (θi=40 mrad, cut-off energy ~ 800 eV), in order to provide the X-ray and UV beam lines. The reflected UV radiation travels through the UV beamline and ends in SOURCE, a three-channel experimental set up. The first light path is a near UV/VIS experimental apparatus, providing intense monochromatic radiation (~ 1011 ph/s in a 2x7 mm spot size) in the 200-650 nm spectral range. The second light path is the VUV channel operating in the 120-400 nm. The third channel is a wide-band UV/VIS radiation source. The beam line has been partially operating since 2009 using the intense SR emission of DAΦNE - a 0.51 GeV storage ring with a routinely circulating electron current higher than 1 A - in parasitic and dedicatedtime mode. This very high current produces the higher UV SR photon flux in the world. SOURCE is open to users applying UV irradiation to biological materials, rocks or meteorites, material science, photo-biology, detector testing and development, medical applications, calibration of space instrumentation. SOURCE is devoted to experiments requiring very intense radiation beams or to calibrate large space optical systems in the VIS/UV/VUV, owing to the large cleanroom available at the end of the beam line.

Abstract

Sentinel-4 is an imaging UVN (UV-VIS-NIR) spectrometer, developed by Airbus Defence and Space as prime contractor under ESA contract in the frame of the joint EU/ESA COPERNICUS program. The mission objective is the operational monitoring of trace gas concentrations for atmospheric chemistry and climate applications. Stray light, which is unwanted light captured by the detectors, is one of the major contributors to such important instrument performance metrics as absolute and relative spectral and spatial radiometric accuracies. Amongst the different sources of stray light, Out-of-Band stray light can not be corrected. It is thus important to ensure its impact is limited. The main scope of this paper is to describe the stray light simulations performed in the frame of the Sentinel-4 project: the models, analysis approach and the results. Also, the technical challenges faced in building the models and performing the analysis and the solutions found to solve them are presented.

4. Advanced optical systems for ultra high energy cosmic rays detection

Abstract

A new advanced optical system is proposed and analysed in this work with the purpose to improve the photons collection efficiency of Multi-AnodePhotoMultipliers (MAPMT) detectors, which will be used to cover large focal surface of instruments dedicated to the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs, above 1019eV) and Ultra High Energy Neutrino (UHEN) detection. The employment of the advanced optical system allows to focus all photons inside the sensitive area of detectors and to improve the signal-to-noise ratios in the wavelength range of interest (300-400nm), thus coupling imaging and filtering capability. Filter is realised with a multilayer coating to reach high transparency in UV range and with a sharp cut-off outside. In this work the applications on different series of PMTs have been studied and results of simulations are shown. First prototypes have been realised. Finally, this paper proposes another class of adapters to be optically coupled on each pixel of MAPMT detector selected, consisting of non-imaging concentrators as Winston cones.

Abstract

The Visible and Near Infrared (VNIR) is one of the modules of EChO, the Exoplanets Characterization Observatory proposed to ESA for an M-class mission. EChO is aimed to observe planets while transiting by their suns. Then the instrument had to be designed to assure a high efficiency over the whole spectral range. In fact, it has to be able to observe stars with an apparent magnitude Mv= 9-12 and to see contrasts of the order of 10-4 - 10-5 necessary to reveal the characteristics of the atmospheres of the exoplanets under investigation. VNIR is a spectrometer in a cross-dispersed configuration, covering the 0.4-2.5 micron spectral range with a resolving power of about 330 and a field of view of 2 arcsec. It is functionally split into two channels respectively working in the 0.4-1 and 1.0-2.5 micron spectral ranges. Such a solution is imposed by the fact the light at short wavelengths has to be shared with the EChO Fine Guiding System (FGS) devoted to the pointing of the stars under observation. The spectrometer makes use of a HgCdTe detector of 512 by 512 pixels, 18 micron pitch and working at a temperature of 45K as the entire VNIR optical bench. The instrument has been interfaced to the telescope optics by two optical fibers, one per channel, to assure an easier coupling and an easier colocation of the instrument inside the EChO optical bench., 26 pages

Abstract

The WSO-UV space observatory, an UV-optimized 1.7 m Ritchey-Chretien telescope, will investigate many astrophysical phenomena from planetary science to cosmology. The Field Camera Unit is a multi-spectral radial instrument on the focal plane of WSO-UV. It will have three channels covering the wide spectral range from 115 nm to 800 nm and it will be operated in imaging, low-resolution spectroscopic, polarimetric and spectro-polarimetric modes. This paper will discuss and review the main characteristics and the present status of this instrument.

Abstract

JEM-EUSO is a space science mission to explore the extreme energies and physics of the Universe. Its instrument will watch the darkside of the earth and will detect UV photons emitted from the extensive air shower caused by an ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR above 1018 eV), or an extremely high energy cosmic ray (EHECR) particle (e.g. above about 1020 eV). Such a high-rigidity particle as the latter arrives almost in a straight line from its origin through the magnetic fields of our Milky Way Galaxy and is expected to allow us to trace the source location by its arrival direction. This can open the door to new astronomy with charged particles. In its 5 years of operation including the tilted mode, Extreme Universe Space Observatory an Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) will detect at least 1000 events with E > 7 × 1019 eV with the Greisen–Zatsepin–Ku’zmin (GZK) suppression spectrum. It can determine the energy spectrum and source locations of GZK to super-GZK regions with a statistical accuracy of several percent. JEM-EUSO is planned to be deployed by H2 transfer vehicle (HTV) and will be attached to the Japanese Experiment Module/Exposure Facility (JEM/EF) of International Space Station. JAXA has selected JEM-EUSO as one of the mission candidates of the second phase utilization of JEM/EF for launch in the early-to-mid 2010 s.

13. Second Order Harmonics Suppression With Glass Filters for Synchrotron UV Radiation Calibration Measurement

Abstract

This development is the latest result of the cooperation between the National Laboratories of Frascati and the Department of Astronomy and Space Science of the University of Florence to improve the capabilities of the existing DXR-2 beam line at the DAΦNE-LIGHT laboratories. This collaboration has assessed a new facility in order to characterize optics and sensors in a wide spectral range (ranging from VUV to IR). Previous measurements [1] have highlighted some limitations in the present setup, as higher signal levels due to the diffracted radiation of the grating in the second order have to be removed to allow an accurate detection. In this work a glass filter is used to remove such spurious signal present in the spectral region with λ>360 nm. The characteristics of the filter and its application to the optical system used to measure the sensitivity of a diamond-based photoconductor have been discussed.

Abstract

The emergence of the citric acid cycle is one of the most remarkable occurrences with regard to understanding the origin and evolution of metabolic pathways. Although the chemical steps of the cycle are preserved intact throughout nature, diverse organisms make wide use of its chemistry, and in some cases organisms use only a selected portion of the cycle. However, the origins of this cycle would have arisen in the more primitive anaerobic organism or even back in the proto-metabolism, which likely arose spontaneously under favorable prebiotic chemical conditions. In this context, we report that UV irradiation of formamide in the presence of titanium dioxide afforded 6 of the 11 carboxylic acid intermediates of the reductive version of the citric acid cycle. Since this cycle is the central metabolic pathway of contemporary biology, this report highlights the role of photochemical processes in the origin of the metabolic apparatus.

15. Schmidt camera correctors for large telescopes.

Abstract

Designing large Schmidt cameras using the polynomial expansion may yield a not-perfect spherical aberration correction. We indicate an alternative method to design the corrector, whose integration in a software package is in progress. The shape of the corrector can be determined with a simple recursive method. The incidence point can also be calculated for any ray, as well as the corresponding unitary vector normal to the surface.
