Abstract: We report a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A_{PV} in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from ^{208}Pb. We measure A_{PV}=550±16(stat)±8(syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F_{W}(Q^{2}=0.00616 GeV^{2})=0.368±0.013. Combined with our previous measurement, the extracted neutron skin thickness is R_{n}-R_{p}=0.283±0.071 fm. The result also yields the first significant direct measurement of the interior weak density of ^{208}Pb: ρ_{W}^{0}=-0.0796±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo) fm^{-3} leading to the interior baryon density ρ_{b}^{0}=0.1480±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo) fm^{-3}. The measurement accurately constrains the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter near saturation density, with implications for the size and composition of neutron stars.

Abstract: The ΛN interaction is able to be studied with Λ hypernuclei. A missing mass spectroscopy with the (e, e′K+) reaction was developed and established at Jefferson Lab. The (e, e′K+) experiment achieved the best precision and accuracy in reaction spectroscopy of hypernuclei. In this article, we introduce the latest results of JLab E05-115 with a discussion of the ΛN charge symmetry breaking in p-shell hypernuclei. In addition, an analysis status of the nnΛ search experiment (JLab E12-17-003) is presented. An overview of one of future plans in which we aim to accurately measure the hypertriton binding energy (JLab C12-19-002) is also shown.

Abstract: The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factor of the proton, $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$, has been measured for elastic electron-proton scattering with polarized beam and target up to four-momentum transfer squared, $Q^2=5.66$ (GeV/c)$^2$ using the double spin asymmetry for target spin orientation aligned nearly perpendicular to the beam momentum direction. This measurement of $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ agrees with the $Q^2$ dependence of previous recoil polarization data and reconfirms the discrepancy at high $Q^2$ between the Rosenbluth and the polarization-transfer method with a different measurement technique and systematic uncertainties uncorrelated to those of the recoil-polarization measurements. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=2.06 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been measured as $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p = 0.720 \pm 0.176_{stat} \pm 0.039_{sys}$, which is in agreement with an earlier measurement with the polarized target technique at similar kinematics. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=5.66 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been determined as $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p=0.244\pm0.353_{stat}\pm0.013_{sys}$, which represents the highest $Q^2$ reach with the double spin asymmetry with polarized target to date.

Abstract: The missing-mass spectroscopy of Λ hypernuclei via the ( e , e ′ K + ) reaction has been developed through experiments at JLab Halls A and C in the last two decades. For the latest experiment, E05-115 in Hall C, we developed a new spectrometer system consisting of the HKS and HES; resulting in the best energy resolution ( Δ E ≃ 0 . 5 -MeV FWHM) and B Λ accuracy ( Δ B Λ ≤ 0 . 2 MeV ) in Λ -hypernuclear reaction spectroscopy. This paper describes the characteristics of the ( e , e ′ K + ) reaction compared to other reactions and experimental methods. In addition, the experimental apparatus, some of the important analyses such as the semi-automated calibration of absolute energy scale, and the performance achieved in E05-115 are presented.

Abstract: The lifetime of a Λ particle embedded in a nucleus (hypernucleus) decreases from that of free Λ decay mainly due to the opening of the Λ N → N N weak decay channel. However, it is generally believed that the lifetime of a hypernucleus attains a constant value (saturation) for medium to heavy hypernuclear masses, yet this hypothesis has been difficult to verify. This paper presents a direct measurement of the lifetime of medium-heavy hypernuclei that were hyper-fragments produced by fission or break-up from heavy hypernuclei initially produced with a 2.34 GeV photon-beam incident on thin Fe, Cu, Ag, and Bi target foils. For each event, fragments were detected in coincident pairs by a low-pressure multi-wire proportional chamber system. The lifetime was extracted from decay time spectrum formed by the difference of the time zeros between the pairs. The measured lifetime from each target is actually a statistical average over a range of mass with mean about 1/2 of the target mass and appears to be a constant of about 200 ps. Although this result cannot exclude unexpected shorter or longer lifetimes for some specific hypernuclei or hypernuclear states, it shows that a systematic decrease in lifetime as hypernuclear mass increases is not a general feature for hypernuclei with mean mass up to A ≈ 130 . On the other hand, the success of this experiment and its technique shows that the time delayed fissions observed and used by all the lifetime measurements done so far on heavy hypernuclei could likely have originated from hyper-fragments lighter than the assumed masses.

Abstract: Background: Measurements of exclusive meson production are a useful tool in the study of hadronic structure. In particular, one can discern the relevant degrees of freedom at different distance scales through these studies. Purpose: To study the transition between non-perturbative and perturbative Quantum Chromodyanmics as the square of four momentum transfer to the struck proton, -t, is increased. Method: Cross sections for the $^1$H(e,e'$\pi^+$)n reaction were measured over the -t range of 0.272 to 2.127 GeV$^2$ with limited azimuthal coverage at fixed beam energy of 4.709 GeV, Q$^2$ of 2.4 GeV$^2$ and W of 2.0 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) Hall C. Results: The -t dependence of the measured $\pi^+$ electroproduction cross section generally agrees with prior data from JLab Halls B and C. The data are consistent with a Regge amplitude based theoretical model, but show poor agreement with a Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) based model. Conclusion: The agreement of cross sections with prior data implies small contribution from the interference terms, and the confirmation of the change in t-slopes between the low and high -t regions previously observed in photoproduction indicates the changing nature of the electroproduction reaction in our kinematic regime., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures Physical Review C, in press

Abstract: A systematic study on the Λ ground state binding energy of hyperhydrogen H Λ 4 measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI is presented. The energy was deduced from the spectroscopy of mono-energetic pions from the two-body decays of hyperfragments, which were produced and stopped in a 9Be target. First data, taken in the year 2012 with a high resolution magnetic spectrometer, demonstrated an almost one order of magnitude higher precision than emulsion data, while being limited by systematic uncertainties. In 2014 an extended measurement campaign was performed with improved control over systematic effects, increasing the yield of hypernuclei and confirming the observation with two independent spectrometers and two targets of different thicknesses. The analysis of these data is in agreement with the previously published value for the H Λ 4 binding energy as well as with a consistent re-analysis of the 2012 data. When compared to the He Λ 4 binding energy from emulsion data, a large charge symmetry breaking effect in the A = 4 hypernuclear system is confirmed.

Abstract: The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) measured two double spin asymmetries using a polarized proton target and polarized electron beam at two beam energies, 4.7 GeV and 5.9 GeV. A large-acceptance open-configuration detector package identified scattered electrons at 40$^{\circ}$ and covered a wide range in Bjorken $x$ ($0.3 < x < 0.8$). Proportional to an average color Lorentz force, the twist-3 matrix element, $\tilde{d}_2^p$, was extracted from the measured asymmetries at $Q^2$ values ranging from 2.0 to 6.0 GeV$^2$. The data display the opposite sign compared to most quark models, including the lattice QCD result, and an apparently unexpected scale dependence. Abstract: The hyperon puzzle, the observation that the two-solar-mass neutron stars existence is hardly explained by all models predicting the appearance of hyperons in the neutron star core is currently one of the unsolved key issues in the physics of compact stars. An experimental study of the reaction (e,e′K) on 40Ca 48Ca nuclei to study the isospin dependence of hyperon dynamics has been proposed, by the Jefferson lab hypernuclear collaboration, and approved by the Jefferson Lab (JLab) PAC. This paper describes a proposal to make a complementary study by extending it to 208Pb, whose properties largely reflects those of the uniform nuclear matter present in the interior of the neutron stars making it the ideal one for this task.

Abstract: The H1(e,e′K+)Λ reaction was studied as a function of the Mandelstam variable -t using data from the E01-004 (FPI-2) and E93-018 experiments that were carried out in Hall C at the 6 GeV Jefferson Laboratory. The cross section was fully separated into longitudinal and transverse components, and two interference terms at four-momentum transfers Q2 of 1.00, 1.36, and 2.07GeV2. The kaon form factor was extracted from the longitudinal cross section using the Regge model by Vanderhaeghen et al. [Phys. Rev. C 57, 1454 (1998)PRVCAN0556-281310.1103/PhysRevC.57.1454]. The results establish the method, previously used successfully for pion analyses, for extracting the kaon form factor. Data from 12 GeV Jefferson Laboratory experiments are expected to have sufficient precision to distinguish between theoretical predictions, for example, recent perturbative QCD calculations with modern parton distribution amplitudes. The leading-twist behavior for light mesons is predicted to set in for values of Q2 between 5 and 10GeV2, which makes data in the few-GeV regime particularly interesting. The Q2 dependence at fixed x and -t of the longitudinal cross section that we extracted seems consistent with the QCD factorization prediction within the experimental uncertainty.

Abstract: The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) performed inclusive, double-polarized electron scattering measurements of the proton at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility at Jefferson Lab. A novel detector array observed scattered electrons of four-momentum transfer 2 . 5 Q 2 6 . 5 GeV 2 and Bjorken scaling 0 . 3 x 0 . 8 from initial beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV. Employing a polarized proton target whose magnetic field direction could be rotated with respect to the incident electron beam, both parallel and near perpendicular spin asymmetries were measured, allowing model-independent access to transverse polarization observables A 1 , A 2 , g 1 , g 2 and moment d 2 of the proton. This document summarizes the operation and performance of the polarized target, polarized electron beam, and novel detector systems used during the course of the experiment, and describes analysis techniques utilized to access the physics observables of interest.

Abstract: Beam helicity asymmetries in the $\overrightarrow{e}p \rightarrow e' K^{+} \Lambda $ reaction have been measured at unprecedentedly low four-momentum transfers $\langle Q^{2} \rangle = 0.05$ (GeV/c)2. At the Mainz Microtron (MAMI), the experiment was performed with a longitudinally polarized beam and an out-of-plane detection of the scattered electron. This experiment probed the associated helicity-dependent structure function ${\rm d} \sigma_{LT'}/{\rm d} \Omega_K^{c.m.}$ , which is sensitive to the details of resonances of the proton. The results were compared to models for kaon electroproduction using effective Lagrangians. The MAMI data is not supporting the Kaon-Maid isobar model, which uses strong longitudinal couplings of the virtual photon to nucleon resonances and predicts a strong peaking of the structure function at forward angles and low $Q^{2}$ . The data is also in disagreement with a Regge-plus-resonance model that predicts the incorrect sign of the structure function. The combination of the MAMI results wih data taken at higher four-momentum transfers measured at Jefferson Lab indicates a smooth transition in $Q^{2}$ without significant changes of the interference pattern in the electroproduction process.

Abstract: The collection efficiency for Cherenkov light incident on a wavelength shifting plate (WLS) has been determined during a beam test at the Proton Synchrotron facility located in the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics (KEK), Tsukuba, Japan. The experiment was conducted in order to determine the detector's response to photoelectrons converted from photons produced by a fused silica radiator; this allows for an approximation of the detector's quality. The yield of the photoelectrons produced through internally generated Cherenkov light as well as light incident from the radiator was measured as a function of the momentum of the incident hadron beam. The yield is proportional to sin 2 θ c , where θ c is the opening angle of the Cherenkov light created. Based on estimations and results from similar conducted tests, where the collection efficiency was roughly 39%, the experimental result was expected to be around 40% for internally produced light from the WLS. The results of the experiment determined the photon collection response efficiency of the WLS to be roughly 62% for photons created in a fused silica radiator and 41% for light created in the WLS.

Abstract: The Mainz Microtron MAMI provides a continuous-wave unpolarized or spin-polarized electron beam with energies up to 1.6 GeV and high degrees of polarization. Electro-production of strange mesons is performed in the multi-spectrometer facility with the Kaos spectrometer for kaon detection and a high-resolution spectrometer for electron detection in plane or out of plane. Differential cross section measurements of exclusive p ( e , e ′ K + ) Λ , Σ 0 reactions at low four-momentum transfers in the nucleonʼs third resonance region have been done, followed by a measurement of the beam helicity asymmetry for p ( e → , e ′ K + ) Λ . These studies are important for the understanding of the effective coupling of photons to the hadrons and their resonances and electromagnetic form factors entering different effective Lagrangian models for photo- and electro-production of strangeness. The polarized structure function, extracted from the beam helicity asymmetry, shows an especially high sensitivity to model parameters.

Abstract: The missing mass spectroscopy of the HeΛ7 hypernucleus was performed using the Li7(e, e ′K+)HeΛ7 reaction at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Hall C. The Λ- binding energy of the ground-state (1/2+) was determined with a smaller error than that of the previous measurement, being BΛ=5.55±0.10stat.±0.11sys.MeV. The experiment also provided new insight into charge symmetry breaking in p-shell hypernuclear systems. Finally, a peak at BΛ=3.65±0.20stat. ±0.11sys.MeV was observed and assigned as a mixture of 3/2+ and 5/2+ states, confirming the "gluelike" behavior of Λ, which makes an unstable state in He6 stable against neutron emission.

With the Kaos spectrometer for kaon detection operated in the multi-spectrometer facility first cross section measurements of the exclusive p ( e , e ′ K + ) Λ , Σ 0 reactions at low-momentum transfers have been performed. These measurements have clearly discriminated between effective Lagrangian models for photo- and electroproduction of strangeness. Recently, the Kaos spectrometer was upgraded to a double-arm spectrometer for the measurement of elementary cross sections at very forward scattering angles and for the missing mass spectroscopy of hypernuclear states. In parallel, pioneering experiments on decay-pion spectroscopy of electroproduced hypernuclei were carried out at MAMI. Future experiments will on the one side address the cross section of the elementary process with polarized beam and on the other side continue the hypernuclear spectroscopy with different light nuclear targets.

Abstract: The investigation of light hypernuclei is quite important for understanding the basic YN interaction and the mechanism of hypernuclear structure. We started the commissioning of the decay pion spectroscopy of light hypernuclei at MAMI-C in 2011. In order to realize the K+ tagging efficiently, some detectors on KAOS spectrometer were upgraded or newly installed. The existing and well-studied spectrometers, SpekA, SpekC were used as pion spectrometers. The analysis is ongoing to estimate the detectors performance and develop the spectrometers for future experiments with higher beam intensity. The preliminary results of the particle identification are presented in this article.

Abstract: A new “tagged-weak π method” is proposed for determination of electromagnetic transition probabilities B(E2) and B(M1) of the hypernuclear states with lifetimes of ∼10−10 s. With this method, we are planning to measure B(E2) and B(M1) for light hypernuclei at JLab. The results of Monte Carlo simulations for the case of E2(5/2+, 3/2+ → 1/2+) transitions in Λ7He hypernuclei are presented.

Abstract: We investigated factors such as time span between transplantation and having offspring, the dosage of immunosuppressive agents during fertilisation and the effects of fertilisation on recipient's renal allograft function in 212 male recipients registered at eight Chinese organ transplantation centres. Our results are as follows: the 212 male renal allograft recipients conceived with their wives between 15 and 204 months after transplantation. The wives who became pregnant at 15-24 months after the renal transplantation gave birth to a total of 20 babies with an average weight of 3115 ± 517 g, of which 3 (15.0%) were premature. The wives who became pregnant at 25-204 months after the renal transplantation gave birth to a total of 196 babies with an average weight of 3384 ± 438 g, of which 6 (3.1%) were premature. All recipients had normal renal function during the fertile period. In conclusion, the fertility capacity of male renal allograft recipients was associated with the time after transplantation and the dose of immunosuppressive agents used during fertilisation. It might be helpful to have a fertility capacity evaluation before fertilisation. There were no effects of fertility on renal allograft function.

Abstract: Since the 1st generation experiment, E89-009, which was successfully carried out as a pilot experiment of (e,e'K+) hypernuclear spectroscopy at JLab Hall C in 2000, precision hypernuclear spectroscopy by the (e,e'K+) reactions made considerable progress. It has evolved to the 2nd generation experiment, E01-011, in which a newly constructed high resolution kaon spectrometer (HKS) was installed and the “Tilt method” was adopted in order to suppress large electromagnetic background and to run with high luminosity. Preliminary high-resolution spectra of 7 Λ He and 28 Λ Al together with that of 12 Λ B that achieved resolution better than 500 keV(FWHM) were obtained. The third generation experiment, E05-115, has completed data taking with an experimental setup combining a new splitter magnet, high resolution electron spectrometer (HES) and the HKS used in the 2nd generation experiment. The data were accumulated with targets of 7 Li, 9 Be, 10 B, 12 C and 52 Cr as well as with those of CH 2 and H 2 O for calibration. The analysis is under way with particular emphasis of determining precision absolute hypernuclear masses. In this article, hypernuclear spectroscopy program in the wide mass range at JLab Hall C that has undergone three generation is described.

Abstract: We have observed three λ-ray transitions in Λ 16 O from both 7MeV excited spin-flip and non-spin-flip partners (2−, 1 2 − ) to the ground-state doublet (1 1 − , 0−) via the 16O(K −, π−) reaction. The 7MeV excitation energies of the spin-doublet members (2−, 1 2 − ) were determined to be 6784 ± 4 ± 4 keV and 6562 ± 1 ± 2 keV, respectively, and thus the spacing was obtained to be 222 ± 4 ± 5 keV. This is the first observation of the spin-flip state directly populated by the (K −, π−) reaction. Moreover, such directly populated spin-flip and non-spin-flip partners were resolved for the first time.

Abstract: We report the measurement of beam-target double-spin asymmetries ALT in the inclusive production of identified hadrons, e +³He↑ → h + X, using a longitudinally polarized 5.9 GeV electron beam and a transversely polarized ³He target. Hadrons (π±, K± and proton) were detected at 16° with an average momentum h>=2.35 GeV/c and a transverse momentum (pT) coverage from 0.60 to 0.68 GeV/c. Asymmetries from the ³He target were observed to be non-zero for π± production when the target was polarized transversely in the horizontal plane. The π⁺ and π⁻ asymmetries have opposite signs, analogous to the behavior of ALT in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

Abstract: International audience; Negatively charged pions from two-body decays of stopped _Lambda^4H hypernuclei were studied in 2012 at the Mainz Microtron MAMI, Germany. The momenta of the decay-pions were measured with unprecedented precision by using high-resolution magnetic spectrometers. A challenge of the experiment was the tagging of kaons from associated K^+∧ production off a Be target at very forward angles. In the year 2014, this experiment was continued with a better control of the systematic uncertainties, with better suppression of coincident and random background, improved particle identification, and with higher luminosities. Another key point of the progress was the improvement in the absolute momentum calibration of the magnetic spectrometers.

Abstract: Recoil polarimetry was used to extract the ratio of the proton electromagnetic form factors, μ p G E p / G M p = 0.878 ± 0.064 (stat) ± 0.012 (sys) , at Q 2 = 1.13 ( GeV / c ) 2 from the reaction H 1 ( e → , e p → ) . This was an ancillary measurement in which the proton polarization was determined as part of a larger program utilizing a stand-alone polarimeter designed to measure μ n G E n / G M n . This measurement complements previous recoil polarimetry measurements of μ p G E p / G M p made at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.

Abstract: Encouraged by the success of the first hypernuclear spectroscopy through the ( e , e ′ K + ) reaction (JLab E89-009), a new improved experiment with a newly developed High resolution Kaon Spectrometer (HKS) and a new configuration of the electron spectrometer is planned at the JLab Hall C. The introduction of the HKS will improve by a factor of two, the energy resolution which was limited by the previous kaon spectrometer. The hypernuclear yield and the signal to noise ratio will be also improved by a factor of 50 and 10, respectively.

Abstract: We observed two γ-ray transitions of 16ΛO in the 16O( K − , π − γ ) reaction using a germanium detector array, Hyperball. The γ rays are assigned as the M1 transitions from the 6 MeV excited state ( 1 − ) to the ground state doublet ( 1 − , 0 − ). The energies of the γ rays are 6534.1 ± 1.5 keV and 6560.2 ± 1.3 keV , and the energy spacing is 26.1 ± 2.0 keV , which corresponds to the ground state doublet spacing. From their yield ratio of 0.65 ± 0.11 ( N ( 6534 ) / N ( 6560 ) ) , the spin order of the ground state doublet is determined. This result gives a small value for the ΛN tensor force strength.

Abstract: The response of a wavelength shifting acrylic plastic has been determined for particles passing through the plastic and for Cherenkov light incident on the plastic from an external silica-aerogel radiator. The results have been obtained during a beam test at the KEK PS facility. The photoelectron yield for internally created Cherenkov light has been determined as a function of particle velocity. A comparison with an empirical parameterization gives rough estimates for the photon collection efficiency of 39% and 92% for internal Cherenkov emission below and above the critical angle for total internal reflection, respectively. A comparatively low efficiency of ≈13% for external light is likely due to losses in the external aerogel radiator.

Abstract: Using a large-acceptance germanium detector array (Hyperball), we measured a γ -ray spectrum in coincidence with production of 7 Λ Li bound states in the 7 Li( π + , K + ) reaction. We observed a γ -ray peak at 429 keV due to the transition from the first excited state of 7 Be produced by the weak decay of 7 Λ Li, 7 Λ Li → 7 Be ∗ (1/2 − ,429 keV )+π − . From the yield of this γ -ray, the branching ratio of the 7 Λ Li weak decay to 7 Be ∗ (429) was obtained to be (6.0 +1.3 −1.6 )×10 −2 . Compared with theoretically calculated values of the partial decay rates, the measurement indicates that the ground-state spin of 7 Λ Li is 1/2 but not 3/2.

Abstract: The ratio of the electric to the magnetic form factor of the neutron, $g \equiv G_{En}/G_{Mn}$, was measured via recoil polarimetry (R.G. Arnold, C.E. Carlson, F. Gross, Phys. Rev. C 23, 363 (1981)) from the quasielastic 2H$(\mathop{e}\limits^{\scriptstyle\to},e' \mathop{n}\limits^{\scriptstyle\to} )$1H reaction at three values of Q2 (viz, 0.45, 1.15, and 1.47 (GeV/c)2) in Hall C of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The data reveal that GEn continues to follow the Galster parameterization up to Q2 = 1.15 (GeV/c)2 and rises above the Galster parameterization at Q2 = 1.47 (GeV/c)2.

Abstract: A new ( e , e ′ K + ) hypernuclear spectroscopy is proposed at Jefferson Lab. With a newly designed high resolution kaon spectrometer (HKS) and a new experimental configuration to reduce background electrons associated with bremsstrahlung, it is expected to realize much higher yield and hypernuclear mass resolution than those of the first successful experiment at Jefferson Lab Hall-C, which demonstrated the feasibility of hypernuclear electroproduction for Λ hypernuclear spectroscopy.

Abstract: The BNL-AGS/E929 experiment was carried out to study energy levels of the Λ 13 C hypernucleus by a gamma-ray spectroscopy. Energy splitting of the spin-orbit doublets, 1 2 − and 3 2 − states, was estimated precisely. The excitation energy of the 1st 3 2 + state was also measured. We discuss the symmetric and the anti-symmetric spin-orbit interactions between a Λ particle and a nucleon from the measurement.

Abstract: Numerical analyses are presented for the laser-generated guided elastic wavesin hollow cylinders. The transient wave-forms excited by the ablation source (AS) and the evaporation source (ES), due to the ablation and the evaporation of oil induced by impinging laser pulse, are calculated numerically by modeling different time-dependencies, i. e. the former is considered as Heaviside step function and the latter is assumed to be Dirac Delta function. Instead of using classical integral transform, the method of eigen-function expansion is employed, by which time-dependent displacement at the outer surface of hollow cylinders will be expressed by summation of longitudinal and flexural type modes. This formula is particularly suitable for analyses of generation efficiency of each guided elastic mode. And the waveform of total radial displacements were analyzed using a short-time Fourier transform (STFT).

Abstract: High resolution γ spectroscopy of hypernuclei using Hyperball has revealed detailed level structure of several p-shell Λ hypernuclei and allowed us to extract the strengths of ΛN spin-dependent interactions. Abstract: An experiment to measure single-spin asymmetries of semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ target was performed at Jefferson Laboratory in the kinematic region of $0.16lxl0.35$ and $1.4l{Q}^{2}l2.7$ ${\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$. Pretzelosity asymmetries on $^{3}\mathrm{He}$, which are expressed as the convolution of the ${h}_{1T}^{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions and the Collins fragmentation functions in the leading order, were measured for the first time. Under the effective polarization approximation, we extracted the corresponding neutron asymmetries from the measured $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ asymmetries and cross-section ratios between the proton and $^{3}\mathrm{He}$. Our results show that both ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ on $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ and on neutron pretzelosity asymmetries are consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties.

Abstract: Since the pioneering experiment E89-009 studying hypernuclear spectroscopy using the (e, e’K+) reaction was completed, two additional experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, were performed at Jefferson Lab. These later experiments used a modified experimental design, the "tilt method", to dramatically suppress the large electromagnetic background, and allowed for a substantial increase in luminosity. Additionally, a new kaon spectrometer, HKS (E01-011), a new electron spectrometer, HES, and a new splitting magnet (E05-115) were added to produce new data sets of precision, high-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy. All three experiments obtained a spectrum for 12B-Lambda, which is the most characteristic p-shell hypernucleus and is commonly used for calibration. Independent analyses of these different experiments demonstrate excellent consistency and provide the clearest level structure to date of this hypernucleus as produced by the (e, e’K+) reaction. This paper presents details of these experiments, and the extraction and analysis of the observed 12B-Lambda spectrum.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the target-normal single-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering from the inclusive reaction ^3He^↑ (e,e′) X on a polarized ^3He gas target. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero in the Born approximation but can be nonzero if two-photon-exchange contributions are included. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.89 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 1.7 2 GeV, which is nonzero at the 2.89σ level. Our measured asymmetry agrees both in sign and magnitude with a two-photon-exchange model prediction that uses input from the Sivers transverse momentum distribution obtained from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

Abstract: A Lambda hyperon which has a strangeness can be bound in deep inside of a nucleus since a Lambda does not suffer from the Pauli exclusion principle from nucleons. Thus, a Lambda could be a useful tool to investigate inside of a nucleus. Since 2000, Lambda hypernuclear spectroscopic experiments by the (e, e'K+) reaction have been performed at the experimental Hall C in Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab Hall C). An experiment, JLab E05-115 was carried out to investigate Lambda hypernuclei with a wide mass range (the mass number, A = 7, 9, 10, 12, 52). The latest analysis status of JLab E05-115 experiment is discussed in the present article.

Abstract: The A(e,e{prime}K{sup +})YX reaction on H, D, {sup 3}He, and {sup 4}He was investigated in Hall C at CEBAF. Data were obtained for Q{sup 2} {approx} 0.35 and 0.5 GeV{sup 2} at 3.245 GeV. The missing mass spectra for both H and D are fitted with Monte-Carlo simulations incorporating peaks corresponding to {Lambda} production on the proton and {Sigma} production on both the proton and neutron. For D, the cross section ratio {Sigma}{sup 0}/{Sigma}{sup {minus}} {approx} 2, and excess yield close to the thresholds for {Lambda} and {Sigma} production can be attributed to final-state interactions that are compared to the data. The analysis of the data for the He targets is in a more preliminary state with broader quasi-free peaks resulting from the higher Fermi momenta. Evidence for bound {Lambda}-hypernuclear states is seen and other structure may be present.

Abstract: The design, construction, and performance of a segmented-target, cathode-strip, tracking-detector is discussed. The chamber was made of low- Z materials in order to allow photons to leave the target region. It was used to determine the reaction vertex of stopping kaons, and was successfully operated in a high-intensity kaon beamline at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The vertical and horizontal resolutions of the stopping kaon reaction positions were σ X ∼0.454 mm and σ Y ∼1.180 mm , respectively. The uncertainty in the longitudinal ( Z ) direction is given by one-half the thickness of a target segment.

Abstract: The spin-orbit splitting of Lambda single-particle states in (13)(Lambda)C was measured. The 13C(K-,pi(-))(13)(Lambda)C reaction was used to excite both the 1/2(-) and 3/2(-) states simultaneously, which have predominantly 12C(0(+)) x p(Lambda) configuration. gamma rays from the states to the ground state were measured in coincidence with the pi(-)'s, by which ls splitting was found to be 152+/-54(stat)+/-36(syst) keV. The value is 20-30 times smaller than exhibited by the ls splitting in the nuclear shell model. This value gives us new insight into the YN interaction.

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of a hypernuclear $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-transition probability. $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays emitted in the $E2(5/{2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1/{2}^{+})$ transition of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ were detected by a large-acceptance germanium detector array (Hyperball), and the lifetime of the parent state ( $5/{2}^{+}$) was determined by the Doppler shift attenuation method. The obtained result, ${5.8}_{\ensuremath{-}0.7}^{+0.9}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7\mathrm{ps}$, was then converted into the reduced transition probability [ $B(E2)$] to be $B({E2;5/2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1/2}^{+})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}3.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.5}_{\ensuremath{-}0.4}^{+0.5}{e}^{2}{\mathrm{fm}}^{4}$. Compared with the $B(E2)$ of the corresponding $E2({3}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1}^{+})$ transition in the ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ nucleus, our result gives evidence that the size of the ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ core in ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ is smaller than the ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ nucleus in the free space.

Abstract: A detailed investigation of the basic hyperon-nucleon interactions in nuclei is one of the aims of Experiment 91-016, approved with high priority at CEBAF, to study the electroproduction of kaons on targets of deuterium, {sup 3}He, and {sup 4}He. Inasmuch as both the electron and K{sup +} are particles that interact relatively weakly with nucleons, electroproduction of light hypernuclei provides a low-distortion method for investigating the fundamental interactions between nucleons, {Alpha}`s, and {Epsilon}`s in few-body systems. In particular, the (e,e`K{sup +}) reactions on cryogenic targets of D, {sup 3}He, and {sup 4}He will be studied at incident electron energies near 3 GeV with coincident detection of the emergent e and K{sup +} in the HMS and SOS magnetic spectrometers in Hall C. Construction of the He target, operating at {approximately}10 atm, {approximately}50 K and capable of dissipating {approximately}30 W, is expected to be complete prior to commencement of production runs in Hall C. The first data runs for E91-016, expected to begin late in FY 1995, will also be the basis for a doctoral thesis at Hampton University. In addition to providing new information on the phases of hyperon-nucleon interactions, measurements of cross sections for hypernuclear formation, and interference phenomena,more » the data may provide evidence for the presence of bound {Epsilon}`s and strange di-baryonic states that are the subject of considerable theoretical discussion.« less
