We present the case of a 36-year-old man who presented with left-sided nasal obstruction and facial pain. Clinical examination and computed tomography revealed an inverted midline supernumerary tooth buckling and deviating the nasal septum to the left. Full surgical resection of the tooth was achieved through a minimally invasive endoscopic septoplasty with full resolution of symptoms. There is little precedent within the literature to guide our management in this case and therefore we offer a successful surgical treatment strategy.

Purpose The aim of this study was to determine long term quality of life (QoL) outcome for children who underwent surgery for duodenal atresia (DA). Methods Patients were identified from a prospective database of neonatal DA cases managed at a tertiary pediatric surgical centre. The QoL was measured using the validated PedsQL™ 4.0 core score and PedsQL™ gastrointestinal module; higher score equates to better QoL. Participants' scores were compared to published control cohorts, age-matching the core score. Trisomy 21 was identified a priori as a possible confounder, informing subgroup analyses for children with and without trisomy 21. Results Fifty-five families were invited to participate, with 38 surveys returned (39% male; median age 6.7y, range 2.7–17.3y). Seven participants had trisomy 21. There were no differences in QoL measures between all DA participants and controls. The PedsQL™ core score was significantly lower for DA participants with trisomy 21, but there was no accompanying difference in PedsQL™ gastrointestinal score. Conclusions Children undergoing DA surgery in the neonatal period typically grow up to have a QoL comparable to a healthy population. Children with DA and trisomy 21 were more likely to have reduced overall QoL, albeit without an associated difference in gastrointestinal QoL score. We present the case of a 33-year-old man with right-sided facial pain. Clinical examination revealed an isolated mass attached to the right inferior turbinate. This was confirmed with computed tomography. Excision was achieved endoscopically and histology revealed an angioleiomyoma. Full symptomatic relief was achieved after surgical excision. Less than 1% of angioleiomyoma lesions are found within the sinonasal cavity. We describe the first documented presentation of angioleiomyoma as a cause of isolated, unilateral facial pain; a very common presentation to the otorhinolaryngology clinic. We promote consideration of angioleiomyoma as a different diagnosis in the presence of facial pain and a unilateral sinonasal lesion. Endoscopic resection provides complete symptomatic resolution.

This article presents raw data obtained from a prospectively collected database of children with duodenal atresia at tertiary pediatric surgery hospital. For all potential participants, pertinent demographic, clinical and operative data was obtained from the database. Potential participants were then contacted and invited to complete a Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL™) 4.0 core score and gastrointestinal module questionnaires. Participant's response to each item in the questionnaires is provided, as well as their calculated health related quality of life scores. Data has the potential to be reused in future studies examining quality of life in duodenal atresia, paediatric gastrointestinal conditions, surgical neonatal conditions and children with trisomy 21. Marine structures are subjected to wave forces whether they are stationary or moving. Such wave forces play a significant role in the design and operation of marine structures. The aim of this study is to understand and predict the unsteady hydrodynamic loads experienced by a submerged body near the surface. Both numerical and experimental studies were conducted. For the experimental work, a newly constructed wave maker inside a tow tank was utilized while a computational fluid dynamics model was developed for the numerical study. Both experimental and numerical studies can complement each other. First, the computational model was validated against experimental wave data so as to understand what parameters in numerical modeling influence the reliability of the numerical results. The second aim was to understand the force and moment that a submerged body would experience for different wave lengths.

Cassava bacterial blight disease was detected for the first time in Solomon Islands on Malaita Island. The bacterium was isolated from diseased cassava plants exhibiting typical leaf symptoms. Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis was identified using biochemical and molecular tests and confirmed as the causal agent by fulfilling Koch’s postulates. This is the first record of this pathogen in the South Pacific.

The bacterium Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri, which causes the disease citrus canker, has been confirmed and reported for the first time in Timor-Leste. Herbarium collections indicate citrus canker has been present since at least 2006. The identity of X. citri subsp. citri has been confirmed using biochemical, and molecular tests, and by completion of Koch’s postulates.

Suicide rates among dentists and a perceived elevated risk for suicide have been debated in the academic literature. It has filtered into the public psyche that dentists have the highest suicide rate of any occupation. The present review seeks support for both protagonist and antagonist positions from multidisciplinary perspectives. Contemporary risk factors and strategies for intervention and the prevention of suicide in dentistry are explored.An online database search for articles and reports, with selected target words, was conducted for peer reviewed publications on suicide in the dental profession, and for factors contributing to dentist suicide. Review guidelines from the American Psychological Association were used to clarify concepts, identify where most work was focussed, and to explore the superiority of any approach to the emotive topic over another.Findings suggest the dominant belief that dentists have an elevated risk of suicide may be historically, but not currently, accurate. Although dentists' suicide is trending down, diversity in methodology means no current consensus is possible. Factors found to be influencing dentists' suicide ranged from known occupational stressors, to toxins and substance abuse, and untreated mental health problems.The contemporary position in New Zealand shows dentists per sé are not more likely than other health professionals to commit suicide although they may have been in the past. Dentists should be aware of individual susceptibility to burnout and mental health problems. Future directions are outlined to address this including peer intervention, and programmes available for dentists to cope better with risks leading to suicide.

Nested PCR indicated a possible causal relationship between presence of phytoplasmas and unusual wilt symptoms in cooking banana plants in PNG. Sequence analysis showed that phytoplasmas from diseased banana plants in four Provinces were unique, but most closely related to a phytoplasma associated with a new lethal disease of coconuts in PNG’s Madang Province, related to phytoplasmas in the 16SrIV group.

Aerial photographs, maps and optically stimulated luminescence dates were combined with existing soil data to construct high resolution chronosequences of soil development over 140 years at a temperate Atlantic UK dune system. Since soil formation had progressed for varying duration under different climate and nitrogen deposition regimes, it was possible to infer their relative influence on soil development compared with location-specific variables such as soil pH, slope and distance to the sea. Results suggest that soil development followed a sigmoid curve. Soil development was faster in wet than in dry dune habitats. In dry dunes, rates were greater than in the literature: they increased with increasing temperature and nitrogen deposition and decreased with increasing summer gales. The combination explained 62% of the variation. Co-correlation meant that effects of nitrogen deposition could not be differentiated from temperature. In wet dune habitats rates increased with temperature and decreased with gales. The combination explained only 23% of the variation; surprisingly, rainfall was not significant. Effects of location-specific variables were not significant in either habitat type. Nitrogen accumulation was faster in wet than dry dune habitats, averaging 43 kg N ha−1 per year overall. Nitrogen accumulation greatly exceeded inputs from atmospheric deposition, suggesting rates of input for biological N fixation are 10–60 kg N ha−1 per year. Recent climate and/or nitrogen deposition regimes may have accelerated soil development compared with past rates. These data suggest the importance of changing climate on soil development rates and highlight the contribution of biological N fixation in early successional systems.

Using published data on the responses of individual species to ozone, 54 EUNIS (European Nature Information System) level 4 communities with six or more ozone-sensitive species (%OS) and c. 20% or more species tested for ozone sensitivity, were identified as potentially ozone-sensitive. The largest number of these communities (23) was associated with Grasslands, with Heathland, scrub and tundra, and Mires, bogs and fens having the next highest representation at 11 and 8 level 4 communities each respectively. Within the grasslands classification, E4 (Alpine and sub-alpine grasslands), E5 (Woodland fringes and clearings) and E1 (Dry grasslands) were the most sensitive with 68.1, 51.6 and 48.6%OS respectively. It is feasible to map the land-cover for these and other communities at level 2, but it may not be currently possible to map the land-cover for all communities identified to be ozone-sensitive at levels 3 and 4.

Phytoplasmas were detected by nested and real time PCR from wilted cooking banana plants in Solomon Islands close to the border with Papua New Guinea (PNG). These phytoplasmas and two similar phytoplasmas found adjacent in PNG formed a group from the Solomon Island archipelago indistinguishable from each other by sequence analysis. These and similar phytoplasmas from the island of New Guinea were most closely related to phytoplasmas in the16SrXXII-A group.

Citrus canker disease was detected for the first time in Solomon Islands on Guadalcanal Island. The bacterium was isolated from diseased citrus plants exhibiting distinct citrus canker symptoms consisting of crater-like lesions on the rind of fruit and corky yellow-brownish lesions on leaves. Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri was identified using biochemical and molecular tests and confirmed as the causal agent by fulfilling Koch’s postulates.

A review of psychology, dental, and medical literature aimed to identify key variables for an ideal dentist-patient relationship. When empathy surfaced as the key positive variable, a further aim, which became the aim of this paper, was to explore how empathy could be intentionally applied.An online database search, limited to judgementally selected target-words, was conducted for peer-reviewed papers on the dentist-patient relationship. Review guidelines from the American Psychological Association were used to clarify concepts, identify where most work was focussed, and to explore the superiority of any approach to the topic, over another.The distinction between instrumental (information) and affective (emotional) communication was important with empathy being the key variable. Empathy was seen clearly to facilitate improved communication and the experience of dentistry for patient and practitioner alike. Empathy was positively associated with negotiated treatment plans, treatment adherence, increased patient satisfaction, and reduced dental anxiety. However, the concept of empathy was rarely operationally defined, or empirically measured. At best it was a scale score or a theme in qualitative data analysis. As such, applied empathy is discussed as a perceived concept. Dental school curricula and patient request forms were found to have the greatest potential to train dentists to convey empathy, and for patients to perceive empathy.Future directions are proposed, to apply empathy in the dentist-patient relationship through an integrated model of patient-centred communication.

Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen with a high mortality rate that has also emerged as a paradigm for intracellular parasitism. We present and compare the genome sequences of L. monocytogenes (2,944,528 base pairs) and a nonpathogenic species, L. innocua (3,011,209 base pairs). We found a large number of predicted genes encoding surface and secreted proteins, transporters, and transcriptional regulators, consistent with the ability of both species to adapt to diverse environments. The presence of 270 L. monocytogenes and 149 L. innocua strain-specific genes (clustered in 100 and 63 islets, respectively) suggests that virulence in Listeria results from multiple gene acquisition and deletion events.

The impact of landscape fragmentation is well recognised as one of the key contributors to the past and present decline in European wildlife. Ecological networks were seen as a solution to this problem and have been the subject of research, policy and practice for nearly 40 years; resulting in many examples of best practice and lessons learned. More recently the European Commission has introduced the concept of Green Infrastructure (GI) which retains the frame work of ecological networks at its core but which offers a more sophisticated integration of economic and social factors and the delivery of a range of ecosystem services. GI has already been included as a concept in EU strategy and offers much for future policy making and delivery of sectoral integration. The views of stakeholders indicate that there a number of key areas for improvement but confirm the potential of the concept. Further work should consider the practicalities of the full translation of the protected area networks into functional ecological networks and making them integral building blocks of the green infrastructure both at the level of policy and practice. In addition information about how to create actual ecological networks at the delivery level, particularly where this has involved stakeholder and public participation needs to be researched and made widely available. The issue of communication; specifically to politicians and decision makers within key sectors (such as spatial planning, transport, industry, etc.) but more widely to researchers, conservation practitioners, businesses and the interested public remain to be fully addressed.

Children's unhappy visits to the dentist can negatively impact lifelong oral health. A possible intervention is to enhance empathy in the child patient-dental practitioner relationship through communication. The present paper presents a new instrument, the Survey of Anxiety and Information for Dentists (SAID), which targets children's dental anxiety, coping preferences and dental neglect, and offers children a change to request information and engage in treatment planning.Five children's focus groups pilot tested the content, wording and response format of a prototype patient request form, the SAID. Participants were 34 10- to 13-year-old children who individually completed the form then discussed it item by item in their small groups.Children had no difficulty completing most items. They identified ambiguities, and items that were meaningless to them, and proposed a new item asking the dentist about their job. Children were polarized over the response format, but they were emphatic about passing the form directly to the dentist, and not to a receptionist or assistant, stressing the importance of having a conversation with their dentist.Before the pilot, dentists had expressed concerns about the potential for words in the SAID-provoking negative feelings. Children, however, wanted and needed facts, so requested that dentists use plain language, not euphemisms, to describe problems and treatment options. We report their selected practical suggestions. SAID-informed negotiated care may promote more patient cooperation and satisfaction at appointments, and more attention to oral hygiene between appointments.

International audience; Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition above the critical load causes eutrophication with adverse impacts on biodiversity. Average Accumulated critical load Exceedance (AAE) is a measure of the amount of critical load exceedance and the area of habitat which is affected, and has been adopted in Europe as a pressure indicator for biodiversity. In Europe, AAE is calculated by the Coordination Centre for Effects (CCE) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe based on modelled nitrogen deposition and country-level reporting of critical load thresholds and ecosystem area. Due to differences in country-level reporting, AAE values for semi-natural habitats may show large differences across Europe. This paper therefore describes the development of a simpler approach to the modelling of habitat eutrophication. The eutrophication indicator model is applicable to all habitats for which empirical critical loads for nutrient nitrogen have been defined and is easily configured to assess impacts of modelled policies or scenarios on AAE. Outputs from the model showed a high correlation with published AAE data (R2 = 0.80) and replicated broad spatial patterns in AAE, but under-estimated actual values by a factor of 2.5. This variation was traced primarily to the use of habitat-specific nitrogen deposition by the CCE which calculates higher nitrogen deposition to forest areas, but also to differences between countries in the critical load thresholds used and the areas of sensitive ecosystems reported. Sensitivity testing showed that exceedance calculations were particularly sensitive to the critical load threshold used, since nitrogen deposition across Europe lies in the middle of most critical load ranges. The indicator model was used to forecast AAE under two scenarios: socio-economic changes under a business as usual scenario to 2025, and the additional effect of agricultural reform where both direct support to farmers and market support were removed. Ammonia emissions showed a net decrease by 2025, with strong regional differentiation. Emissions increased in former Soviet bloc countries and decreased mainly in south west Europe and Finland. Agricultural reform had little additional impact on ammonia emissions. AAE was forecast to decrease by 49% by 2025, due mainly to reductions in emissions of oxidised N from industry and transport, independent of agricultural reform. However, as oxidised N decreases, the relative contribution of N from agricultural sources will increase, and policy measures which reduce ammonia emissions will have increasing relevance for reducing AAE.

Competency at graduation, in a variety of physical and attitudinal skills, is an essential outcome measure for courses training veterinary surgeons. The approach adopted by the Royal Veterinary College, London, to identify and define the expected skill competencies required of our veterinary undergraduates by the time of graduation is described. In addition, we demonstrate how this skill set was built into a framework that was aligned with other student learning objectives. This two-year project resulted in the publication of a day-one skills handbook, which was introduced to the college staff and students in 2007.

Ozone and atmospheric nitrogen are co-occurring pollutants with adverse effects on natural grassland vegetation. Plants of the rhizomatous sedge Carex arenaria were exposed to four ozone regimes representing increasing background concentrations (background-peak): 10-30, 35-55, 60-80 and 85-105 ppb ozone at two nitrogen levels: 12 and 100 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1). Ozone increased the number and proportion of senesced leaves, but not overall leaf number. There was a clear nitrogen x ozone interaction with high nitrogen reducing proportional senescence in each treatment and increasing the ozone dose (AOT40) at which enhanced senescence occurred. Ozone reduced total biomass due to significant effects on root biomass. There were no interactive effects on shoot:root ratio. Rhizome tissue N content was increased by both nitrogen and ozone. Results suggest that nitrogen mediates above-ground impacts of ozone but not impacts on below-ground resource translocation. This may lead to complex interactive effects between the two pollutants on natural vegetation.

A method of classifying hadron jets is presented which uses the {ital z} correlations of all hard particles in the jet. We show that this leads to cuts which will allow preparation of quark-enhanced'' samples of jets. Such samples should be useful for computing the {ital W} mass in jet-jet invariant-mass distributions, and in searches for new particles which decay predominantly into jets. We urge experiments with {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} data to test these theoretical predictions by comparisons of their quark-enhanced'' and gluon-enhanced'' jet samples.

Several series of experiments have been conducted to gain information about the wettability of AlN, BN, Si3N4 and two sialon ceramics by potential braze materials. It was possible to achieve wetting of all five ceramics using aluminium, copper-titanium alloys, and a Ag-28Cu-2Ti alloy. Wetting by aluminium and the Ag-28Cu-2Ti alloy was usually good. Both wetting and non-wetting alloys containing titanium reacted to form TiN and it is argued that the achievement of wettability is associated with a certain degree of hypostoichiometry. While aluminium should also have reacted, no clear evidence was obtained. In supplementary experiments it was found that bonds formed by brazing with aluminium at 1000 °C could have shear strengths as great as 60MPa. Although the experimental work was preliminary in nature, it suggested that good brazing systems could be developed.

This study identified 83 species from existing publications suitable for inclusion in a database of sensitivity of species to ozone (OZOVEG database). An index, the relative sensitivity to ozone, was calculated for each species based on changes in biomass in order to test for species traits associated with ozone sensitivity. Meta-analysis of the ozone sensitivity data showed a wide inter-specific range in response to ozone. Some relationships in comparison to plant physiological and ecological characteristics were identified. Plants of the therophyte lifeform were particularly sensitive to ozone. Species with higher mature leaf N concentration were more sensitive to ozone than those with lower leaf N concentration. Some relationships between relative sensitivity to ozone and Ellenberg habitat requirements were also identified. In contrast, no relationships between relative sensitivity to ozone and mature leaf P concentration, Grime's CSR strategy, leaf longevity, flowering season, stomatal density and maximum altitude were found. The relative sensitivity of species and relationships with plant characteristics identified in this study could be used to predict sensitivity to ozone of untested species and communities.

A field survey was conducted to detect signals of atmospheric nitrogen (N) in 11 dune systems along a nitrogen deposition gradient in the United Kingdom. In the mobile and semi-fixed dunes, above-ground biomass was positively related to N inputs. This increase was largely due to increased height and cover of Ammophila arenaria. In the long term, this increased biomass may lead to increased organic matter accumulation and consequently accelerated soil development. In the fixed dunes, above ground biomass also showed a positive relationship with N inputs as did soil C : N ratio while soil available N was negatively related to N inputs. Plant species richness was negatively related to N inputs. In the dune slacks, while soil and bulk vegetation parameters showed no relationship with N inputs, cover of Carex arenaria and Hypochaeris radicata increased. Site mean Ellenberg N numbers showed no relationship with N deposition either within habitats or across the whole dataset. Neither abundance-weighting nor inclusion of the Siebel numbers for bryophytes improved the relationship. The survey reveals that the relationships of soil and vegetation with atmospheric N deposition vary between sand dune habitats but, despite this variability, clear correlations with N inputs exist. While this survey cannot establish causality, on the basis of the relationships observed we suggest a critical load range of 10 - 20 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1) for coastal sand dunes in the UK.

It is well known that neuropeptides interact with lipid vesicles in a manner similar to biological membranes, with electrostatic interactions between the two providing a mechanism for concentrating the peptide at the vesicle's surface, followed by hydrophobic interactions between the peptide and the core of the vesicle that induce and stabilize secondary structure motifs. In an effort to understand these interactions to a greater extent, our group has developed a series of anionic micelles (SDS) containing various concentrations of the bile salt CHAPS, which is used as a model for cholesterol. The incorporation of CHAPS into the hydrophobic core of these micelles should alter the degree to which the neuropeptide can insert itself, affecting structure. These interactions were investigated using two-dimensional NMR, pulse-field gradient (PFG) NMR, and molecular modeling experiments. The results of this study clearly indicate that electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between the micelle and neuropeptide are completely independent of one another. Increasing the concentration of CHAPS to 15 mM in the micelles blocks the insertion of the hydrophobic side chains of the neuropeptide into the hydrophobic core of the micelles. The electrostatic interactions as determined by diffusion measurements are not affected by the presence of increasing CHAPS concentration. Our observations are consistent with the predictions of Seelig (A. Seelig and J. Seelig, "Interaction of Drugs and Peptides with the Lipid Membrane," in Structure and Function of 7TM Receptors, T. W. Schwartz, S. A. Hjorth, and T. S. Kastrup, Eds., Munksgaard: Location, 1996).

An analysis of the anharmonic fermion oscillator, possessing an $\mathrm{Sp}(2)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{O}(N)$ symmetry, is presented. The complete solution is given for $N=2 \mathrm{and} 3$, and the general features for arbitrary $N$ are spelled out.

Ovarian cancer has the highest mortality rate of any gynaecological malignancy. This is caused by metastatic deposits obstructing the intestinal tract. Very little is known about the molecules involved in the initial attachment of the metastatic tumour cells to the peritoneal mesothelial lining. Previously, we showed that many ovarian tumour lines express the adhesion molecule, CD44, on their cell surface. The major ligand for CD44 is the extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycan, hyaluronic acid (HA). Because mesothelial cells have a pericellular cost that contains large amounts of HA, it was postulated that the CD44/HA interaction is an important stage in ovarian cancer spread. However, it was difficult to demonstrate this interaction in an in vitro adhesion assay with mesothelial cells as most of the HA, and presumably the bound tumour cells, were lost from the mesothelial cells during the washing steps of the assay. In order to try and clarify the situation, the adhesion of six ovarian tumour lines to immobilized HA was measured. Four lines expressed high levels of CD44 and two lines expressed negligible amounts. Preliminary experiments were carried out with one of the CD44-expressing lines. After coating a plate overnight with 3 mg ml(-1) HA, the 5 min adhesion of this line varied between 2% and 73% according to the type of plate that was used. Falcon Micro Test III flexible plates gave the highest adhesion and was used for further experiments. Plates were coated with concentrations of HA between 0.001 mg ml(-1) and 3 mg ml(-1). All CD44 expressing lines adhered to HA, but the maximum adhesion and the adhesion strength varied with the line studied and was not closely related to the total CD44 expression. These results suggest that CD44 on ovarian tumour cells binds to HA on mesothelial cells. As much of the HA can be very easily lost from the mesothelial cell surface, additional factors such as the strength of the CD44/HA interaction, and the formation of bonds by the tumour cells with other membrane adhesion molecules, such as integrins, are also important in promoting tumour spread.

Functional interactions between the enantiomers of the dihydropyridine 1,4-dihydro-2,6-dimethyl-5-nitro-4-[2-(trifluoromethyl)-phenyl]-3-pyridi ne carboxylic acid methyl ester (Bay K 8644) and the benzoylpyrrole methyl 2,5-dimethyl-4-[2(phenylmethyl)benzoyl]-H-pyrrole-3-carboxylate (FPL 64176) were investigated on L-type Ca++ channels in guinea pig ileal longitudinal smooth muscle. The effects of these drugs, when applied individually, were as described in earlier studies. For instance, both (-)-(S)-Bay K 8644 and FPL 64176 caused concentration-dependent contraction, which is consistent with Ca++ channel activation, whereas (+)-(R)-Bay K 8644 gave concentration-dependent relaxation, which is consistent with Ca++ channel inhibition. The activities of the different drugs were dependent on the extracellular levels of KCI. When applied in combination, however, the responses evoked were not those predicted from the effects of the drugs applied individually. Contractions produced by FPL 64176 (25 nM to 1 microM) were abolished in the presence of 100 nM (-)-(S)-Bay K 8644 but were potentiated by 10 to 150 nM (+)-(R)-Bay K 8644 and inhibited by 1 microM (+)-(R)-Bay K 8644. Conversely, contractile responses to (-)-(S)-Bay K 8644 were abolished by 100 nM FPL 64176. In the presence of 1 microM FPL 64176, however, (-)-(S)-Bay K 8644 gave concentration-dependent relaxation of the muscle, which is consistent with Ca++ channel inhibition.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

We demonstrate that there are characteristics common to quark jets and to gluon jets regardless of the interaction that produced them. The classification technique we use depends on the mass of the jet as well as the center-of-mass energy of the hard subprocess that produces the jet. In addition, we present the quark-gluon separability results of an artificial neural network trained on three-jet ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ events at the ${\mathit{Z}}^{0}$ mass, using a back-propagation algorithm. The inputs to the network are the longitudinal momenta of the leading hadrons in the jet. We tested the network with quark and gluon jets from both ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3 jets and p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2 jets. Finally, we compare the performance of the artificial neural network with the results of making well chosen physical cuts.

Five pathogen-host leaf tissue combinations were used to determine whether dried plant disease material gamma (γ) irradiated at a level of 25 kGy retains diagnostic value when subjected to selected polymerase chain reaction-based assays. Diagnostic amplification of nucleic acids from all anticipated positive samples was successful following γ irradiation. Variability in results is discussed in relation to sample handling.
