20. The distribution of urea concentrations and urease activities in the coastal waters of Hainan Island during the spring

Abstract

Field cruises were carried out in the coastal waters of Hainan Island to survey urea concentrations and urease activities together with other environmental parameters.The bioavailability of urea for phytoplankton growth was analyzed based on these results.Results showed that the average concentrations of urea varied from 2.07 to 3.30 μmol/L,which accounted for 14% — 38% of total dissolved nitrogen(TDN) and showed the trend to increase from the north to the south and the east.The urease activities of plankton were between 0.30 — 0.84 μmol N · L-1 · h-1 with the maximum in the Haikou Bay.Most of the high values of urea concentrations and urease activities were detected in the nearshore waters where sewage draining exit,aquaculture area and the tourist area located.Diatoms were the dominant species in the phytoplankton communities.However,in some stations with dinoflagellates densities as high as 104 —105 cells/L,the urea concentrations and the urease activities were also higher comparing with other sites.The phytoplankton biomass correlated well with the urease activities or urea/TDN atomic ratios which suggested the significance of urea as one nitrogen source in the coastal waters of Hainan Island.Urea and NH+4 concentrations were the most important factors responsible for the distribution of dinoflagellates in the northern and the southern waters respectively.The terrestrial input of urea promoted the growth of phytoplankton,in particularly dinoflagellates,therefore urea might play an role in the competition and succession in the phytoplankton community in the coastal waters of Hainan Island during the spring period.

Abstract

We describe the taxonomy and species diversity of 35 taxa of the diatom genus Thalassiosira from a series of net plankton collected quarterly or monthly from eight locations off the Guangdong coastal waters in the South China Sea. Field samples and 14 cultured Thalassiosira clonal strains were studied by light and electron microscopy. A total of 35 Thalassiosira species were recorded, including nine new records for China, namely T. cedarkeyensis, T. densannula, T. duostra, T. hendeyi, T. nanolineata, T. nodulolineata, T. punctigera, T. tubifera and T. visurgis, and eight new records for Asia (taxa as above, except for T. punctigera). The morphological features of these Thalassiosira species are described and compared with previous illustrations. Some morphological variations are reported and discussed. This study was the first attempt to describe Thalassiosira species diversity in the South China Sea and Asian tropical waters. The results highlight a higher species diversity of Thalassiosira in the Guangdong coastal waters than in other studied regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Diversity, taxonomy and biogeographical distribution of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia(Bacillariophyceae) in Guangdong coastal waters, South China Sea

Abstract

For the first detailed study on species composition and biogeographical distribution of Pseudo-nitzschiain Chinese waters, net and water plankton samples were obtained during four seasonal cruises from five representative areas along the Guangdong provincial shoreline in the South China Sea. In total, fourteen Pseudo-nitzschiaspecies were identified morphologically: P. americana, P. brasiliana, P. caciantha, P. calliantha, P. cuspidata, P.cf. lineola, P. mannii, P. multiseries, P. mutistriata, P. pseudodelicatissima, P. pungens, P. sinica, P. subfraudulentaand P. subpacifica. Seven taxa are new records for China, two are new for Asia. Detailed morphometric data were obtained using light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). P. subpacificahad a smaller valve width than previously described. P. cuspidataand P.cf. lineoladeviated in valve width and interstria density. Species diversity and relative abundances (percentage) of Pseudo-nitzschiaspp. were maximal in summer (July 2006), followed by spring (April 2007) and minimal in winter (January 2007). Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha, P. subfraudulenta, P. caciantha, P. pseudodelicatissimaand P. pungenswere commonly recorded in Guangdong coastal waters. Pseudo-nitzschia subfraudulentadominated the total microphytoplankton in Daya Bay during summer and its relative abundance was 49.86%. Pseudo-nitzschia callianthawas the markedly dominant species in other three areas during summer and its relative abundance was 73.43%, 81.76% and 83.1% in Hailing Bay, Shantou Harbour and Zhelin Bay, respectively.
