Abstract

The expansion of alien plant species is of global concern, yet our understanding of their dispersal mechanisms is limited. Here we address the potential of alien plant seeds to disperse via ingestion, transport and egestion in waterfowl (endozoochory). Based on their general rapid expansions, we expected alien plant species to have several advantages for endozoochory compared to native plant species. We hypothesised that seeds of alien species would have higher passage rate, longer gut retention times, higher germinability after gut passage and shorter time-to-germination after egestion by waterfowl. In order to test our hypotheses, we compared the endozoochorous dispersal ability of six pairs of congeneric alien and native wetland plant species in a feeding experiment with mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). We focused on differences in seed survival, gut retention time, germinability and time-to-germination. In the analyses we corrected for seed shape and volume as these seed traits are known to have important effects. With gut passage, alien species had higher passage rates and germinated slower, whereas native species had shorter retention times and greater germinability. Controlling for seed traits did not alter these conclusions, but seed traits affected all aspects of the endozoochory process. This suggests that alien species may have particular traits correlated with a higher endozoochory potential. Among control seeds, alien seeds germinated faster and their germinability was higher than natives. Seed traits explained differences in germinability and time-to-germination in control seeds. Seeds of alien plant species have traits that correlate with successful endozoochory. This may provide alien species with a competitive advantage over native plant species by ensuring higher endozoochory rates in new environments, potentially enabling their rapid expansions. Our study underlines the important role of seed traits in the endozoochory potential

Abstract

In order to explore their orchid flora, we performed surveys of 96 Azerbaijani burial places in 2018 and 2019. Altogether, 28 orchid taxa were found in 37 visited cemeteries. In the orchid diversity a remarkable pattern was observed: geographic latitude was significantly and positively related to the number of taxa and number of individuals. The most widespread and abundant orchids in Azerbaijani graveyards were Anacamptis pyramidalis and A. papilionacea (found in 23 and 8 cemeteries, respectively). Azerbaijani cemeteries can be important refuges for rare and threatened orchids, e.g., Himantoglossum formosum (three cemeteries), Ophrys sphegodes subsp. mammosa (eight), Orchis adenocheila (two), O. punctulata (three), O. stevenii (one) and Steveniella satyrioides (one). Epipactis turcica, detected in a single locality, was previously unknown to the flora of Azerbaijan. Additionally, we documented orchid tuber (salep) collection in two cemeteries.

30. Biogeographic history, egg colouration, and habitat selection in Turdusthrushes (Aves: Turdidae)

Abstract

Despite broad interest and recent experimentation, there is no single ecological model accounting for the adaptive significance of the diversity of avian eggshell colouration. The often blue-green eggs of Turdusthrushes are a charismatic example of this, having long captured cultural and scientific attention. Although the biology and evolutionary history of “true” thrushes is well understood, little is known about correlated evolution between shifts in habitat and eggshell pigmentation, and how these shifts map with Turdusbiogeography. We applied phylogenetic comparative methods to assess the evolutionary timing of divergence and variation of life history traits and eggshell colouration and maculation presence in the genus. We found that eggshell colour diversified independently on several occasions in the past 11 million years, with much of the variation occurring within the last 4 million years. The majority of Turdusspecies lay blue-green eggs and also tend to be sedentary and forest-dwelling. Diet generalist species and species which have transitioned to a forest habitat are more likely to lay white eggs (10% of studied species). In turn, lineages in any habitat were more likely to transition to blue-green eggs. We found that variation in egg colour is increased in some clades, of which two lineages radiated in South America and the East Palearctic, in the past 2–4 million years. These findings provide support for the hypothesis that white eggs are more conspicuous to predators in open environments and that multiple, non-mutually exclusive constraints operate on the adaptive function of avian eggshell colour.

Abstract

Despite huge habitat losses caused by agricultural intensification, dry grasslands still represent one of the most diverse ecosystems in Europe. Their highly fragmented remnants are often pre-served in man-made or human-influenced habitats (e.g., kurgans, roadside verges or cemeteries). In recent decades the significance of cemeteries as suitable habitats for preserving native and rare spe-cies has been repeatedly emphasized. However, the effect of modern management practices on long-term persistence of grassland species has remained largely unexplored. Sternbergia colchiciflora Waldst. & Kit. is one of the very few threatened dry grassland specialists whose occurrence in the cemeteries of the Pannonian Basin has been known for more than a century. This hysteranthous, myrmecochorous geophyte is considered rare or sporadic within its whole distribution range. In a systematic botanical survey we investigated 154 cemeteries in the Pannonian part of its distribution area. Despite modern management of cemeteries, characterised by frequent and intensive motorised lawn mowing, we found populations of S. colchiciflora at 27 Hungarian localities and confirmed three formerly known occurrences in Serbia. To study the effect of regular mowing on the long-term survival prospects of S. colchiciflora populations, we quantified the species’ seed production (cap-sular seed number) in 9 mown and 15 unmown sites (290 and 235 specimens, respectively). The difference in seed number between the two groups was statistically insignificant (13.6±5.6 and 14.7±5.0, respectively). This result is probably due to the peculiar phenology and small stature of this species. Firstly, its annual life cycle above ground (from September to May) is out of the main mowing season. Secondly, its 3–7 cm tall flowers and fruits have a high chance of surviving the damaging effect of motorised mowing. Thirdly, it seems likely that the loss of leaf tips, i.e. a part of the assimilation surface, of this short-leaved (5–13 cm) species by mowing doesn’t affect the general condition of the damaged individuals. Our study emphasizes the role of Central European cemeteries (even if mown intensively) in preservation of characteristic dry grassland plant species.

43. Using traditional ecological knowledge in discovery of rare plants: a case study from Turkey.

Abstract

Sustainable (and adaptive) management of natural resources is usually based on long term local experiences with nature. Local traditional communities often possess rich ecological knowledge connected to nature and traditional resource use and management. This knowledge can provide unexpected new information for researchers, and show new opportunities and ways for professionals in conserving rare and threatened species. We found significant new populations of the rare Ophrys lesbis in a private area next to the settlement of Çamlık, Muğla, and Orchis punctulata in the graveyard of Kadılar, Antalya with the help of local rural people. We firstly report the replanting of some orchid species (Orchis papilionacea, O. italica, and Barlia robertiana) in kitchen gardens of Çamlık and Bayır, in Muğla Province. The presence of significant orchid populations (e.g., the biggest ever found for Ophrys lesbis) in an area, where local owners have been actively harvesting salep from year to year for decades suggests that the moderate salep harvesting can be sustainable for long run. Based on our observations, Turkish salep harvesters can help botanists and conservationists find new locations of rare threatened orchid populations, and therefore indirectly help in conserve these populations.
