The photooxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the troposphere has important implications for air quality, weather, and climate. A deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms can be achieved by studying these reactions under controlled conditions and analysing the emerging photooxidation products. This requires dedicated laboratory infrastructure as well as sensitive and selective analytical techniques. Here, we constructed a new 300 L indoor Teflon atmospheric simulation chamber as part of the Bayreuth ATmospheric simulation CHambers (BATCH) infrastructure. The chamber was irradiated by a bandpass-filtered solar simulator that enabled experiments with realistic photon fluxes and OH radical concentrations. It was coupled to a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) and a solid-phase microextraction–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS) system for the on-line analysis of the precursor VOC and its oxidation products in the gas phase. As part of the SPME-GC-MS method, multifunctional oxygenated compounds (carbonyls, alcohols, carboxylic acids) were derivatized with O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine (PFBHA) and N-trimethylsilyl-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide (MSTFA). We designed a permeation source for the on-line addition of internal standards to improve method reproducibility. The joint setup was tested and validated by studying the OH-radical-induced photooxidation of toluene, one of the most abundant aromatic hydrocarbons in the atmosphere. For chamber characterization, we first derived the photolysis rates for several typical toluene products in the irradiated BATCH Teflon chamber (1.77 × 10−8–3.02 × 10−4 s−1). Additionally, wall loss rates were determined empirically (4.54 × 10−6–8.53 × 10−5 s−1) and then parameterized according to fundamental molecular properties. For the cresols, we compiled a weighted calibration factor for the PTR-ToF-MS, taking into account isomer-specific sensitivities as well as the relative distribution as determined by the SPME-GC-MS. The weighted calibration improved the instrumental agreement to 14 %, whereas the PTR-ToF-MS overestimated the sum of the isomers by 31 % compared to the SPME-GC-MS concentrations when using the averaged calibration factor. Thus, the combined data set offered insight into both temporal trends and the isomeric composition. Finally, we conducted six toluene photooxidation experiments to evaluate the ring-retaining first-generation products. Based on the loss-corrected concentrations, we derived formation yields for o-cresol (8.0 ± 1.8 %), m-cresol (0.4 ± 0.1 %), p-cresol (2.4 ± 0.6 %), benzyl alcohol (0.5 ± 0.1 %), and benzaldehyde (4.6 ± 1.7 %) under NOx-free conditions at T = 298 ± 1 K. These yields are consistent with previous studies and therefore serve as proof of concept for our applied methods.

The accuracy of reaction theories used to extract properties of exotic nuclei from scattering experiments is often unknown or not quantified, but of utmost importance when, e.g., constraining the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter from observables as the neutron-skin thickness. In order to test the Glauber multiple-scattering model, the total interaction cross section of Image 1 on carbon targets was measured at initial beam energies of 400, 550, 650, 800, and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The measurements were performed during the first experiment of the newly constructed R3B (Reaction with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment after the start of FAIR Phase-0 at the GSI/FAIR facility with beam energies of 400, 550, 650, 800, and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The combination of the large-acceptance dipole magnet GLAD and a newly designed and highly efficient Time-of-Flight detector enabled a precise transmission measurement with several target thicknesses for each initial beam energy with an experimental uncertainty of ±0.4%. A comparison with the Glauber model revealed a discrepancy of around 3.1% at higher beam energies, which will serve as a crucial baseline for the model-dependent uncertainty in future fragmentation experiments.

Financing entrepreneurship spurs innovation and economic growth. Digital financial platforms that crowdfund equity for entrepreneurs have emerged globally, yet they remain poorly understood. We model equity crowdfunding in terms of the relationship between the number of investors and the amount of money raised per pitch. We examine heterogeneity in the average amount raised per pitch that is associated with differences across three countries and seven platforms. Using a novel dataset of successful fundraising on the most prominent platforms in the UK, Germany, and the USA, we find the underlying relationship between the number of investors and the amount of money raised for entrepreneurs is loglinear, with a coefficient less than one and concave to the origin. We identify significant variation in the average amount invested in each pitch across countries and platforms. Our findings have implications for market actors as well as regulators who set competitive frameworks.

The aim of this study was to assess the characteristics of fly ash foam concrete containing two varying temperature ranges of microencapsulated phase change materials (PCMs): PCM28D (26–30 °C) and PCM43D (41–45 °C). In total, five different fly ash foam concrete samples were prepared, and the unit weight of cement was substituted with varying percentages of PCM (0%, 10% and 30%). As a result, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis revealed that PCM43D-30% exhibited a heat storage capacity of 45.32 °C and 37.89 °C with 42.87 J/g and 41.01 J/g in its liquid and solid phases, respectively. Furthermore, thermocycle analysis indicated that PCM43D-30% maintained the temperature within the stated phase change range for a duration of 7 h. In conclusion, the incorporation of PCMs (28D and 43D) in fly ash foam concrete shows promise in reducing indoor temperature fluctuations, thereby improving energy efficiency. The improved thermal performance can be suitable for various applications such as inner and outside walls of energy-efficient construction designs.

The proton drip-line nucleus 17Ne is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the 17Ne(p,2p)16F→15⁎O+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500 MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of 16F into 15O (including γ decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the 15O+p relative-energy spectrum and the 16F momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l=0 and l=2 motion of the valence protons in 17Ne. With a resulting relatively small l=0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that 17Ne exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the 15O core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections.

The experimental data collected during the S515 experiment performed by the R3B collaboration at GSI/FAIR represent a great opportunity to investigate nucleon knockout reactions of exotic nuclei in the region of Sn using complete kinematics measurements. These cross sections can be used in the future to investigate the quenching in the knockout of the minority species (neutrons or protons) in nuclei far from stability. Some of the arguments put forward are the underestimation of the knockout of deeply bound nucleons, final state interactions or the role of short-range correlations (SRC). Recently, several works based on inclusive measurements have shown that these SRCs could reduce the single nucleon knockout cross sections by around 50%, depending on the neutron excess (N/Z) of the initial projectile. The S515 data can help us to go further in this investigation because it allows to correlate the knockout cross sections of one, two or more nucleons with the number of protons and neutrons emitted from the target and which can be detected by the CALIFA and NeuLAND detectors, respectively, and perform complete kinematical studies on the nature of the event (SRC, evaporation, emission of clusters, final-state interactions...). Here the results obtained for the charge distribution of reaction residues are presented, which is one of the first steps of the still on-going analysis.

In the last decades, measurements of spallation, fragmentation and Coulex induced fission reactions in inverse kinematics have provided valuable data to accurately investigate the fission dynamics and nuclear structure at large deformations of a large variety of stable and non-stable heavy nuclei. The collected data were used to constrain dynamic and nuclear structure parameters of different de-excitation models, such as ABLA and GEF, but the data can also be used to constrain the parameterizations describing the pre-fragment properties after the nuclear collision, such as the angular momentum gained by the pre-fragment. In this work, the fissioning system yields are compared to calculations assuming different parameterizations for modeling the angular momentum gained by the compound nuclei. Our findings indicate that the parameterizations utilized by abrasion models clearly underestimate the angular momentum, resulting in the underestimation of the production of lighter fissioning systems.

A new experimental fission approach is presented in the context of the R3B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) collaboration, at the GSI/FAIR facility, in which knockout reactions in inverse kinematics are used to induce fission of 238U that will allow to characterise the excitation energy of the fission process and all the fission products. The CALIFA (CALorimeter for In-Flight detection of γ-rays and high energy charged pArticles) calorimeter, a key part of the R3B set-up, is used to reconstruct the momenta of the two protons from the (p, 2p) reactions. Preliminary results show that kinematic variables and first estimates for nucleon-removal cross sections are well reconstructed and in good agreement with other experimental measurements.

Nuclear fission is a complex dynamical process, whose description involves the coupling between intrinsic and collective degrees of freedom, as well as different quantum-mechanical phenomena. For this reason, to this day it still lacks a satisfactory and complete microscopic description. In addition to the importance of describing fission itself, studies of the r-process in astrophysics depend on fission observables to constrain the theoretical models that explain the isotopic abundances in the Universe. To improve on the existing data, fission reactions of heavy nuclei in inverse kinematics are produced in quasi-free (p,2p) scattering reactions, which induce fission through particle-hole excitations that can range from few to tens of MeV. In order to study the evolution of the fission yields with temperature, the excitation energy of the fissioning system must be reconstructed, which is possible by measuring the four-momenta of the two outgoing protons. Performing this kind of experiment requires a complex experimental setup, providing full isotopic identification of both fission fragments and an accurate measurement of the momenta of the two outgoing protons. This was realized recently at the GSI/FAIR facility and some of the results obtained for the charge distributions are presented in this work.

We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section 16O(α,γ)12C, which is the time reversed reaction to 12C(α,γ)16O. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the R3B setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity 16O beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted 16O ions pass, while detecting the 12C and 4He.

Experimental determination of the cross sections of proton capture on radioactive nuclei is extremely difficult. Therefore, it is of substantial interest for the understanding of the production of the p-nuclei. For the first time, a direct measurement of proton-capture cross sections on stored, radioactive ions became possible in an energy range of interest for nuclear astrophysics. The experiment was performed at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI by making use of a sensitive method to measure (p,γ) and (p,n) reactions in inverse kinematics. These reaction channels are of high relevance for the nucleosyn-thesis processes in supernovae, which are among the most violent explosions in the universe and are not yet well understood. The cross section of the 118Te(p,γ) reaction has been measured at energies of 6 MeV/u and 7 MeV/u. The heavy ions interacted with a hydrogen gas jet target. The radiative recombination process of the fully stripped 118Te ions and electrons from the hydrogen target was used as a luminosity monitor. An overview of the experimental method and preliminary results from the ongoing analysis will be presented.

We report on a new experimental approach for the Doppler correction of X-rays emitted by heavy ions, using novel metallic magnetic calorimeter detectors which uniquely combine a high spectral resolution with a broad bandwidth acceptance. The measurement was carried out at the electron cooler of CRYRING@ESR at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The X-ray emission associated with the radiative recombination of cooler electrons and stored hydrogen-like uranium ions was investigated using two novel microcalorimeter detectors positioned under 0∘ and 180∘ with respect to the ion beam axis. This new experimental setup allowed the investigation of the region of the N, M → L transitions in helium-like uranium with a spectral resolution unmatched by previous studies using conventional semiconductor X-ray detectors. When assuming that the rest-frame energy of at least a few of the recorded transitions is well-known from theory or experiments, a precise measurement of the Doppler shifted line positions in the laboratory system can be used to determine the ion beam velocity using only spectral information. The spectral resolution achievable with microcalorimeter detectors should, for the first time, allow intrinsic Doppler correction to be performed for the precision X-ray spectroscopy of stored heavy ions. A comparison with data from a previous experiment at the ESR electron cooler, as well as the conventional method of conducting Doppler correction using electron cooler parameters, will be discussed.

In this report, we compare two filter algorithms for extracting timing information using novel metallic magnetic calorimeter detectors, applied to the precision X-ray spectroscopy of highly charged ions in a storage ring. Accurate timing information is crucial when exploiting coincidence conditions for background suppression to obtain clean spectra. For X-rays emitted by charge-changing interactions between ions and a target, this is a well-established technique when relying on conventional semiconductor detectors that offer a good temporal resolution. However, until recently, such a coincidence scheme had never been realized with metallic magnetic calorimeters, which typically feature much longer signal rise times. In this report, we present optimized timing filter algorithms for this type of detector. Their application to experimental data recently obtained at the electron cooler of CRYRING@ESR at GSI, Darmstadt is discussed.
