Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have emerged as innovative approaches to enhance clinical outcomes by addressing tissue lesions and degenerations that can significantly impair organ function. Since human tissues have limited regenerative capacity, the field of regenerative medicine aims to restore damaged tissues and their functionalities. Recent decades have witnessed remarkable progress in materials science, tissue engineering, and medicine, leading to the development of regenerative engineering. This interdisciplinary field has revolutionized the production of artificial matrices, enabling the design of anatomically accurate structures with enhanced biocompatibility, bioabsorption, and cell adhesion. Among the techniques utilized for fabricating cellular scaffolds, the electrospinning of fibers stands out as an ideal approach due to its ability to mimic the characteristics of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Electrospun scaffolds exhibit distinct advantages, including a high surface area-to-volume ratio, exceptional porosity, uniformity, compositional diversity, structural flexibility, and the ease of functionalization with bioactive molecules for controlled release. These versatile properties allow for the creation of nanofiber scaffolds that closely resemble the architecture of the ECM. Consequently, they facilitate the transport of nutrients and oxygen to cells as well as the incorporation of growth factors to stimulate cell growth. These advancements open up a wide range of applications in the field of regenerative medicine.

In this work, we present the modification of a medical-grade silicone catheter with the N-vinylimidazole monomer using the grafting-from method at room temperature and induced by gamma rays. The catheters were modified by varying the monomer concentration (20–100 vol%) and the irradiation dose (20–100 kGy). Unlike the pristine material, the grafted poly(N-vinylimidazole) chains provided the catheter with hydrophilicity and pH response. This change allowed for the functionalization of the catheters to endow it with antimicrobial features. Thus, the quaternization of amines with iodomethane and bromoethane was performed, as well as the immobilization of silver and ampicillin. The inhibitory capacity of these materials, functionalized with antimicrobial agents, was challenged against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains, showing variable results, where loaded ampicillin was amply better at eliminating bacteria.

Radiation chemistry presents a unique avenue for developing innovative polymeric materials with desirable properties, eliminating the need for chemical initiators, which can be potentially detrimental, especially in sensitive sectors like medicine. In this investigation, we employed a radiation-induced graft polymerization process with N-vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) to modify lignocellulosic membranes derived from Agave salmiana, commonly known as maguey. The membranes underwent thorough characterization employing diverse techniques, including contact angle measurement, degree of swelling, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier-transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), nuclear magnetic resonance (CP-MAS 13C-NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and uniaxial tensile mechanical tests. The membranes’ ability to load and release an antimicrobial glycopeptide drug was assessed, revealing significant enhancements in both drug loading and sustained release. The grafting of PNVCL contributed to prolonged sustained release by decreasing the drug release rate at temperatures above the LCST. The release profiles were analyzed using the Higuchi, Peppas–Sahlin, and Korsmeyer–Peppas models, suggesting a Fickian transport mechanism as indicated by the Korsmeyer–Peppas model.

Objetivo. Proporcionar recomendaciones para la detección temprana de pacientes con alto riesgo de desarrollar cáncer de pulmón (CP) en el primer nivel de atención y su referencia oportuna. Material y métodos. Se realizó una búsqueda detallada de la evidencia científica disponible para responder las preguntas de investigación clínica y se utilizó el Panel Delphi modificado para lograr un consenso entre expertos. Resultados. Se generaron 14 recomendaciones siguiendo los estándares de una GPC. Conclusión. El CP representa un problema de salud pública en México; por ello, esta guía establece recomendaciones que apoyan la toma de decisiones sobre la detección precoz y la referencia de pacientes con sospecha de CP en el primer nivel de atención.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) represent an advanced tool in the medical field because they can be modified according to biomedical approaches and guided by an external magnetic field in the human body. The first objective of this review is to exemplify some promising applications in the medical field, including smart drug-delivery systems, therapies against cancer cells, radiotherapy, improvements in diagnostics using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and tissue engineering. Complementarily, the second objective is to illustrate the mechanisms of action and theoretical foundations related to magnetoresponsive materials.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. Multiple extrinsic and intrinsic factors are associated with this disease’s development. Various research groups worldwide have reported the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in samples of malignant breast tumors. Although its role in mammary carcinogenesis is not fully understood, it is known that the HPV genome, once inserted into host cells, has oncogenic capabilities. The present study aimed to detect the presence of HPV DNA in 116 breast tissue biopsies and classify them according to their histology. It was found that 50.9% of the breast biopsies analyzed were malignant neoplasms, of which 74.6% were histologically classified as infiltrating ductal carcinoma. In biopsies with non-malignant breast disease, fibroadenoma was the most common benign neoplasm (39.1%). Detection of HPV DNA was performed through nested PCR using the external primer MY09/11 and the internal primer GP5+/6+. A hybridization assay genotyped HPV. HPV DNA was identified in 20.3% (12/59) of malignant neoplasms and 35% non-malignant breast disease (16/46). It was also detected in 27.3% (3/11) of breast tissue biopsies without alteration. However, there are no statistically significant differences between these groups and the existence of HPV DNA (p = 0.2521). Its presence was more frequent in non-malignant alterations than in malignant neoplasias. The most frequent genotypes in the HPV-positive samples were low-risk (LR) HPV-42 followed by high-risk (HR) HPV-31.

Se caracteriza por su rapidez en la tasa de crecimiento y en el desarrollo de metástasis a distancia. Objetivos: Orientar y estandarizar el tratamiento del CPCP enfermedad extensa en México basado en evidencia clínica nacional e internacional. Material y métodos: Este documento se desarrolló como una colaboración del Instituto Nacional de Cancerología y la Sociedad Mexicana de Oncología en cumplimiento con estándares internacionales. Se integró un grupo conformado por oncólogos médicos, cirujanos oncólogos, cirujanos de tórax, radio-oncólogos y metodólogos con experiencia en revisiones sistemáticas de la literatura y guías de práctica clínica. Resultados: Se consensaron, por el método Delphi y en reuniones a distancia, las recomendaciones en CPCP enfermedad extensa, producto de preguntas de trabajo. Se identificó y evaluó la evidencia científica que responde a cada una de dichas preguntas clínicas antes de incorporarla al cuerpo de la guía. Conclusión: Esta guía proporciona recomendaciones clínicas para el manejo de la enfermedad extensa del CPCP y durante el proceso de toma de decisiones de los clínicos involucrados con su manejo en nuestro país para mejorar la calidad de la atención clínica para estos pacientes.

This work proposes the development of a polymer film made up of affordable components for its use as a healthcare material. Chitosan, itaconic acid, and Randia capitata fruit extract (Mexican variation) are the unique ingredients of this biomaterial prospect. Chitosan (from crustacean chitin) is crosslinked with itaconic acid, and in situ added R. capitata fruit extract in a one-pot reaction carried out in water as the sole solvent. Structurally, the film formed is an ionically crosslinked composite characterized by IR spectroscopy and thermal analysis (DSC and TGA); cell viability was also performed in vitro using fibroblasts BALB/3T3. Dry and swollen films were analyzed to determine affinity and stability in water. This chitosan-based hydrogel is designed as a wound dressing due to the combined properties of the chitosan with R. capitata fruit extract, which has potential as bioactive material due to its properties in epithelial regeneration.

Abstract To date, the impact, timeline and duration of COVID‐19 pandemic remains unknown and more than ever it is necessary to provide safe pathways for cancer patients. Multiple triage systems for nonemergent surgical procedures have been published, but potentially curative cancer procedures are essential surgery rather than elective surgery. In the present and future scenario of our country, thoracic oncology teams may have the difficult decision of weighing the utility of surgical intervention against the risk for inadvertent COVID‐19 exposure for patients and medical staff. In consequence, traditional pathways of surgical care must be adjusted to reduce the risk of infection and the use of resources. It is recommended that all thoracic cancer patients should be offered treatment according to the accepted standard of care until shortage of services require a progressive reduction in surgical cases. Here, we present a consensus of recommendations discussed by a multidisciplinary panel of experts on thoracic oncology and based on the best available evidence, and hope it will provide a modifiable framework of guidance for local strategy planners in thoracic cancer care services in Mexico. Key points Significant findings of the study This article provides recommendations to guarantee the continuity of surgical care for thoracic oncology cases during COVID‐19 pandemic, whilst maintaining the safety of patients and medical staff. What this study adds This guideline is the result of an expert consensus on thoracic surgical oncology with recommendations adapted to medical, economic and social realities of Mexico.

Currently, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most widely used polymeric materials in different sectors such as medicine, engineering, and food, among others, due to its benefits, including biocompatibility, mechanical resistance, and tolerance to chemicals and/or abrasion. However, despite all these excellent characteristics, it is not capable of preventing the proliferation of microorganisms on its surface. Therefore, providing this property to PET remains a difficult challenge. Fortunately, different strategies can be applied to remove microorganisms from the PET surface. In this work, the surface of the PET film was functionalized with amino groups and later with a dicarboxylic acid, allowing a grafting reaction with chitosan chains. Finally, the chitosan coating was loaded with silver nanoparticles with an average size of 130 ± 37 nm, presenting these materials with an average cell viability of 80%. The characterization of these new PET-based materials showed considerable changes in surface morphology as well as increased surface hydrophilicity without significantly affecting their mechanical properties. In general, the implemented method can open an alternative pathway to design new PET-based materials due to its good cell viability with possible bacteriostatic activity due to the biocidal properties of silver nanoparticles and chitosan.
