- Abstract
In addition to the potential global impact of climate change on marine ecosystems, the extensive use of high-impact fishing methods is a primary catalyst for benthic biodiversity degradation in the Mediterranean Sea. Implementing fishery no-take zones (FNTZs) emerges as a key measure for the sustainable recovery and management of overexploited stocks and habitats. To identify appropriate geographical scales for their implementation, it is crucial to understand the spatial connectivity of species and ecosystem functioning during long periods. Therefore, it is necessary to implement robust spatio-temporal multiparametric monitoring procedures, allowing the synchronous collection of biological (i.e., image-based), oceanographic and geochemical data. For this, we developed a spatial cooperative network of fixed (i.e., landers) and docked mobile (i.e., AUVs) platforms with wireless intercommunication capability (i.e., by acoustic modems). This system is designed for intelligent observation monitoring and mapping (i.e., AI-based recognition of species and bioturbation features) over extended periods with real-time, remote supervision and data transmission through the water column to an ASV., Peer Reviewed

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
To improve our understanding of how marine ecosystems function, it is crucial to quantify their processes using proper spatio-temporal multiparametric monitoring techniques. Science and innovative technologies must play a central role in developing the Blue Growth in a sustainable manner, where advances in enabling technologies such as remote sensing, modelling, AI and autonomous systems, will enhance our capacity to monitor and predict, assess and manage ecosystems. The PLOME project proposes a spatially adaptive, non-invasive, modular platform of independent and wirelessly connected benthic stations and AUVs to intelligently observe, monitor and map marine ecosystems, during long-lasting periods with real-time supervision. The monitoring solution has a simple deployment and is easy-to-move from an experimental site to another, without any cable installation, for coastal and deep water environments. Stations provide continuous and intensive temporal observation, while AUVs can provide such intensive measurement at spatial level, when they undock for a mission from a station in which they previously recharged batteries and transmitted information. The PLOME project will demonstrate the proposed concept in two scenarios. The first one, involves testing independent capabilities in a real deep-sea scenario, while the second one entails a oneweek demonstration in shallow water, where an AUV will be operated from a docking station. This paper describes the Girona 1000 AUV from the Universitat de Girona that will be used for the deep tests , conducted at depths ranging from 200 to 400 meters. The AUV will be used in cooperation with two fixed stations developed by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Acoustic communications and ranges between the AUV and the stations will be used to coordinate the AUV’s work and to improve its navigation. Optical communications will be used to transmit data to the stations gathered from the AUV observations. The AUV will integrate a, Peer Reviewed

- Abstract
Abstract: Wireless sensor networks are a form of connection between different nodes that is increasingly needed and requested for the development of other technologies on the rise, in particular IoT technology has to be highlighted, which, thanks to its great growth, has seen a great development in this type of networks. These wireless networks, due to their nature, are usually created by nodes and low-cost devices with a great tendency to fail, so it is important to be able to

- Abstract
Presently, large cities have significant problems with noise pollution due to human activity. Transportation, economic activities, and leisure activities have an important impact on noise pollution. Acoustic noise monitoring must be done with equipment of high quality. Thus, long-term noise monitoring is a high-cost activity for administrations. For this reason, new alternative technological solutions are being used to reduce the costs of measurement instruments. This article presents a design for a versatile electronic device to measure outdoor noise. This device has been designed according to the technical standards for this type of instrument, which impose strict requirements on both the design and the quality of the device’s measurements. This instrument has been designed under the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) concept, so the microphone–electronics set can be used as a sensor that can be connected to any microprocessor-based device, and therefore can be easily attached to a monitoring network. To validate the instrument’s design, the device has been tested following the regulations of the calibration laboratories for sound level meters (SLM). These tests allowed us to evaluate the behavior of the electronics and the microphone, obtaining different results for these two elements. The results show that the electronics and algorithms implemented fully fit within the requirements of type 1 noise measurement instruments. However, the use of an electret microphone reduces the technical features of the designed instrument, which can only fully fit the requirements of type 2 noise measurement instruments. This situation shows that the microphone is a key element in this kind of instrument and an important element in the overall price. To test the instrument’s quality and show how it can be used for monitoring noise in smart wireless acoustic sensor networks, the designed equipment was connected to a commercial microprocessor board and in

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
Wearable technology has had a significant growth in the last years; this is particularly true of smartwatches, due to their potential advantages and ease of use. These smart devices integrate sensors that can be potentially used within industrial settings and for several applications, such as safety, monitoring, and the identification of occupational risks. The accelerometer is one of the main sensors integrated into these devices. However, several studies have identified that sensors integrated into smart devices may present inaccuracies during data acquisition, which may influence the performance of their potential applications. This article presents an analysis from the metrological point of view to characterize the amplitude and frequency response of the integrated accelerometers in three currently available commercial smartwatches, and it also includes an analysis of the uncertainties associated with these measurements by adapting the procedures described in several International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards. The results show that despite the technical limitations produced by the factory configuration, these devices can be used in various applications related to occupational risk assessment. Opportunities for improvement have also been identified, which will allow us to take advantage of this technology in several innovative applications within industrial settings and, in particular, for occupational health purposes.

Física - Abstract
A system capable of analyzing the road state is proposed. This system captures and processes the noise produced by the interaction of the tires with the road, to reliably estimate the road surface conditions. Based on proposed system, an embedded device, tightly integrated with vehicle electronics has been designed and implemented. Resulting system, called Acoustic Asphalt Analyzer (A3), is capable of working on-board and in real time, with a very high success rate and a very fast response time. It can be applied to surface auscultation or active safety in vehicles, being useful in initiatives such as connected and unmanned vehicles. A3 allows to know the surface road conditions in real-time and provide data to the infrastructure manager, other drivers and the vehicle driver himself. The solution has been patented.

ABSTRACT An electronic system capable of estimating the road surface status in real time, and among dry/wet/icy/snowy is shown. The system is mainly based on the analysis of the tyre/road noise generated during vehicle driving. The sound emission pattern of the tyre/road interaction changes dramatically depending on whether the pavement is dry, wet, icy or snowy. Thus discriminating the tyre/road noise acoustic footprint, it is possible to estimate the road status. To be able to distinguish this acoustic footprint, a Support Vector Machines (SVM) based classifier has been developed. Tyre/road noise is initially captured using a properly conditioned microphone. The obtained signal is digitized and pre-processed, extracting its spectral components to produce the feature vector that will be fed to classifier. Finally the classifier estimates the condition of the asphalt, which may be broadcast through the vehicle communication interface, to be shown on the console, or to be used by other subsystems in order to improve safety and comfort. The connection to the vehicle engine control units through its communications interface, also allows obtaining information on its dynamic variables, allowing improving the results obtained by the classifier. Before the system is able to operate properly, the classifier needs to be trained. In initial tests, the system has been trained to distinguish the states of dry and wet asphalt, yielding success rates around 91 % and an average response time in the transition from dry to wet of about 0.2 s. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the system. Currently, a reference implementation of the system is under development. It integrates all the elements needed in a board of reduced size and low cost. Current implementation of the system could improve security by issuing a slippery asphalt warning, when it detects wet asphalt. Data obtained may also be used by the traction control subsystem to improve safety and comfort. Additional work is being made to extend the classifier algorithms to detect icy and snowy asphalt states.

Electrónica - Abstract
A basic requirement of the data acquisition systems used in long pulse fusion experiments is the real time physical events detection in signals. Developing such applications is usually a complex task, so it is necessary to develop a set of hardware and software tools that simplify their implementation. This type of applications can be implemented in ITER using fast controllers. ITER is standardizing the architectures to be used for fast controller implementation. Until now the standards chosen are PXIe architectures (based on PCIe) for the hardware and EPICS middleware for the software. This work presents the methodology for implementing data acquisition and pre-processing using FPGA-based DAQ cards and how to integrate these in fast controllers using EPICS.

The impact of disruptions in JET became even more important with the replacement of the previous Carbon Fiber Composite (CFC) wall with a more fragile full metal ITER-like wall (ILW). The development of robust disruption mitigation systems is crucial for JET (and also for ITER). Moreover, a reliable real-time (RT) disruption predictor is a pre-requisite to any mitigation method. The Advance Predictor Of DISruptions (APODIS) has been installed in the JET Real-Time Data Network (RTDN) for the RT recognition of disruptions. The predictor operates with the new ILW but it has been trained only with discharges belonging to campaigns with the CFC wall. 7 realtime signals are used to characterize the plasma status (disruptive or non-disruptive) at regular intervals of 1 ms. After the first 3 JET ILW campaigns (991 discharges), the success rate of the predictor is 98.36% (alarms are triggered in average 426 ms before the disruptions). The false alarm and missed alarm rates are 0.92% and 1.64%.

Electrónica - Abstract
A disruption predictor based on support vector machines (SVM) has been developed to be used in JET. The training process uses thousands of discharges and, therefore, high performance computing has been necessary to obtain the models. To this respect, several models have been generated with data from different JET campaigns. In addition, various kernels (mainly linear and RBF) and parameters have been tested. The main objective of this work has been the implementation of the predictor model under real-time constraints. A “C-code” software application has been developed to simulate the real-time behavior of the predictor. The application reads the signals from the JET database and simulates the real-time data processing, in particular, the specific data hold method to be developed when reading data from the JET ATM real time network. The simulator is fully configurable by means of text files to select models, signal thresholds, sampling rates, etc. Results with data between campaigns C23and C28 will be shown.

In the last years significant efforts have been devoted to the development of advanced data analysis tools to both predict the occurrence of disruptions and to investigate the operational spaces of devices, with the long term goal of advancing the understanding of the physics of these events and to prepare for ITER. On JET the latest generation of the disruption predictor called APODIS has been deployed in the real time network during the last campaigns with the new metallic wall. Even if it was trained only with discharges with the carbon wall, it has reached very good performance, with both missed alarms and false alarms in the order of a few percent (and strategies to improve the performance have already been identified). Since for the optimisation of the mitigation measures, predicting also the type of disruption is considered to be also very important, a new clustering method, based on the geodesic distance on a probabilistic manifold, has been developed. This technique allows automatic classification of an incoming disruption with a success rate of better than 85%. Various other manifold learning tools, particularly Principal Component Analysis and Self Organised Maps, are also producing very interesting results in the comparative analysis of JET and ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) operational spaces, on the route to developing predictors capable of extrapolating from one device to another.

The impact of noise on the acoustic quality of university facilities is a topic that has received little attention. The main external factors that influence a reduced acoustic quality are generally caused by sources such as traffic noise, public works, etc. Internally, the students themselves are the source of noise. Knowledge of the acoustic conditions of educational facilities allows us to create and develop strategies to improve the environment where students carry out their daily activities. This work studied the acoustic quality in university facilities of different educational institutions of the Community of Madrid, Spain. Stereo recordings at diverse places inside of different university campus were made and a test was designed. The questionnaire was applied to university students while they were listening to the recordings. In a simple way for them, psychoacoustic parameters were associated and compared with the information obtained from the laboratory study.

Telecomunicaciones - Abstract
The use of FPGAs in data acquisition cards for processing purposes allows an efficient real time pattern recognition algorithm implementation. Using 13 JETs database waveforms an algorithm for detecting incoming plasma disruptions has been implemented. This algorithm is written in MATLAB using floating point representation. In this work we show the methodology used to implement the real time version of the algorithm using Intelligent Data Acquisition Cards (IDAQ), DAQ devices with field programmable gate array (FPGA) for local processing. This methodology is based on the translation of the MATLAB code to LabVIEW and the final coding of specific pieces of code in LabVIEW for FPGA in fixed point format. The whole system for evaluating the real time disruption detection (RTDD) has been implemented using the Intelligent Test and Measurement System (ITMS) platform. ITMS offers distributed data acquisition, distribution and real time processing capabilities with advanced, but easy to use, software tools that simplify application development and system setup. The RTDD implementation uses a standard PXI/PXIe architecture. Two 8 channel analog output cards play JETs database signals, two 8 channel DAQ with FPGA acquire signals and computes a feature vector based in FFT analysis. Finally the vector acquired is used by the system CPU to execute a pattern recognition algorithm to estimate an incoming disruption.

Informática ,Física - Abstract
Data acquisition systems with self-adaptive sampling rate capabilities have been proposed as a solution to reduce the shear amount of data collected in every discharge of present fusion devices. This paper discusses the design of such a system for its use in the KG8B correlation reflectometer at JET. The system, which is based on the ITMS platform, continuously adapts the sample rate during the acquisition depending on the signal bandwidth. Data are acquired continuously at the expected maximum sample rate and transferred to a memory buffer in the host processor. Thereafter the rest of the process is based on software. Data are read from the memory buffer in blocks and for each block an intelligent decimation algorithm is applied. The decimation algorithm determines the signal bandwidth for each block in order to choose the optimum sample rate for that block, and from there the decimation factor to be used. Memory buffers are used to adapt the throughput of the three main software modules _data acquisition, processing, and storage_ following a typical producer-consumer architecture. The system optimizes the amount of data collected while maintaining the same information. Design issues are discussed and results of performance evaluation are presented.

Física - Abstract
The development of tools for managing the capabilities and functionalities of distributed data acquisition systems is essential in long pulse fusion experiments. The intelligent test and measurement system (ITMS) developed by UPM and CIEMAT is a technology that permits implementation of a scalable data acquisition and processing system based on PXI or CompactPCI hardware. Several applications based on JINI technology have been developed to enable use of this platform for extensive implementation of distributed data acquisition and processing systems. JINI provides a framework for developing service-oriented, distributed applications. The applications are based on the paradigm of a JINI federation that supports mechanisms for publication, discovering, subscription, and links to remote services. The model we implemented in the ITMS platform included services in the system CPU (SCPU) and peripheral CPUs (PCPUs). The resulting system demonstrated the following capabilities: (1) setup of the data acquisition and processing to apply to the signals, (2) information about the evolution of the data acquisition, (3) information about the applied data processing and (4) detection and distribution of the events detected by the ITMS software applications. With this approach, software applications running on the ITMS platform can be understood, from the perspective of their implementation details, as a set of dynamic, accessible, and transparent services. The search for services is performed using the publication and subscription mechanisms of the JINI specification. The configuration and supervision applications were developed using remotely accessible (LAN or WAN) objects. The consequence of this approach is a hardware and software architecture that provides a transparent model of remote configuration and supervision, and thereby a means to simplify the implementation of a distributed data acquisition system with scalable and dynamic local processing capability developed in a fusion environment.

- Abstract
Changes in weather have a major influence on driving safety. On wet pavement, tyre grip is reduced and drivers must adapt their driving style accordingly. The correct operation of this adaptation mechanism depends on the perception the driver has of the asphalt status. Due to certain effects, this perception does not always correspond with reality. To improve this perception, it is essential to inform the driver about the asphalt status, efficiently and as quickly as possible. This could be achieved by installing an asphalt status detection system on the vehicle itself. The system could display asphalt status information in the vehicle’s console, allowing drivers to adapt their driving style accordingly. In this paper we propose an asphalt status classification system based on real-time acoustic analysis of tyre/road noise. The proposed system uses a practical approach that allows it to be integrated into a real vehicle. We present the system architecture used to measure the noise and the signal processing algorithms used for the classification of the asphalt state. A practical implementation of the proposed system has been developed and tested. For this preliminary prototype, only wet and dry asphalt states have been covered. Obtained wet/dry classification results have been reported, showing very high success rates.

- Abstract
Environmental acidity is a key parameter in Cultural Heritage conservation issues since it has a direct impact on degradation of both exposed and stored materials. Unfortunately, most of the acidity sensors now available are electrodes, which are not able to measure pH in gaseous phases and, therefore, are not suitable for measuring the environmental acidity of the air. This paper describes the development of an interface electronic system designed for the practical application and using of environmental acidity sensors prepared by the Sol–Gel procedure. These chemical sensors were investigated previously. They have optical response: their color changes reversibly depending on the pH of the surrounding environment (air). A simple portable unit with a wireless ZigBee interface has been designed and developed to measure the environmental acidity in museums, showcases, store and exhibition rooms and several Cultural Heritage buildings. Main achievements of the interface electronic system have focused, on the one hand, on conversion of the optical signal of sensors into an electric current and, on the other hand, on the computer interfacing to obtain quantitative data of environmental pH. Quantitative data are obtained through the calibration curve of sensors and the software designed for managing the whole system.
