An 8500-year record of high-resolution pollen, non-pollen palynomorph, microscopic charcoal and selected geochemical data (Ti, Zr and Pb) is presented from an ombrotrophic mire from the Xistral Mountains, Galicia, North-West Iberia. The results suggest that vegetation changes over the last eight millennia are primarily the result of human disturbance, fire and climate change. Climate and fire were the main factors influencing vegetation development during the early to mid-Holocene, including a short-lived decline in forest cover c. 8.2 cal. ka BP. Changes associated with the 4.2 and 2.8 cal. Ka BP events are less well defined. Human impact on vegetation became more pronounced by the late Holocene with major periods of forest disturbance from c. 3.1 cal. ka BP onwards: during the end of Metal Ages, Roman period and culminating in the permanent decline of deciduous forests in the post-Roman period, as agriculture and metallurgy intensified, leading to the creation of a cultural landscape. Climate change appears to become less influential as human activity dominates during the Late Holocene.

Galicia, an oceanic region located in the NW of the Iberian Peninsula, hosts a large diversity of peatlands. Here we briefly describe them, based on the body of research conducted since the mid 1940s, that was largely boosted since the 1990s. Galician peatlands are both present key landscapes, libraries of past landscapes and priority protected landscapes, i.e., windows to our past, present and future. Regarding typology, blanket bogs, raised bogs, and several types of fens can be recognized. They are mostly acidic and are mainly located in mountain areas. Grasses, sedges and reeds are the dominant components of the vegetation, while mosses are a much less relevant group compared to northern European mires. Peat formation started at the Early Holocene in many places, but there are also peatlands that started to form in the Mid and Late Holocene. As the peat deposit grows and increases in depth/age, peatlands store information in the form of biotic (pollen, spores, diatoms, organic compounds, etc.) and abiotic (minerals, spheroidal particles, etc.) indicators. Thus, they provide long-term (i.e., centuries to millennia) records of environmental changes—including human activities. Research developed in peatlands from Galicia enabled to reconstruct vegetation changes, atmospheric pollution (metals and organic pollutants), climate changes (rainfall, temperature, and storminess) and dust deposition, as well as peatlands’ ecological evolution along the Holocene. The relevance of the ecosystem services provided by peatlands (hydric regulation, carbon-storage, biodiversity reservoir) together with the pervasive increase in the pressures and threats they are facing, prompted their inclusion as priority protection habitats in the Habitats Directive. Natura2000 Network is the legal European framework under which large efforts are been made to stablish the ecological bases for conservation, improve mapping, and implement new protection and restoration measures.

The mineral content of peat has received little attention until the last few decades, when peat cores have been increasingly used to study past dust deposition. Paleodust deposition is commonly reconstructed through elemental datasets, which are used to infer deposition rates, storminess patterns, mineral composition, source identification, and fertilization effects. To date, only a few studies have directly analyzed the mineralogy (by XRD and SEM) and particle size of peat mineral matter, and the conducted studies have usually been constrained by the need to remove a large amount of organic matter, which risks altering the mineral component. One alternative is to use quick, nondestructive techniques, such as FTIR-ATR, that require little sample preparation. In this study, we analyzed by FTIR-ATR both the bulk peat and ash fractions of a sequence taken in a minerogenic mire that covered a wide inorganic matter content range (6%–57%). Aided by principal component analysis on transposed IR spectral data, we were able to identify the main minerals in bulk peat and ash, quartz, mica (likely muscovite), K feldspar (likely microcline), and plagioclase (likely anorthite), which are consistent with the local geology of the mire catchment. Changes in mineral composition during the last ca. 2800 years were coeval with previously reconstructed environmental changes using the same core. Our results suggest that FTIR-ATR has great potential to investigate peat mineral matter and the processes that drive its compositional change.

The dataset contains standardized absorbance values of spectra for peat and ash samples, collected in the mid infrared (wavenumber 4000 – ⁠400 cm⁻¹) region using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy - Attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR). The spectra enable the characterization of the molecular and mineral composition of peat and ash, and how they vary with depth. It also helps in establishing the chronology of changes in the mineral composition of the deposited dust and understanding the factors controlling these changes. The samples were obtained from a core collected in 2007 at Cruz do Bocelo mire (NW Spain) and cover the last 2800 years.

Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile meadows are highly productive coastal marine ecosystems that provide multiple ecosystem services. The seagrass is not always the major contributor to total primary production, however, little is known about long-term changes in the composition of primary producers within seagrass meadows. Understanding compositional shifts within the community of primary producers is crucial to evaluate how climate and anthropogenic change affect the functioning of seagrass ecosystems. Here we analysed marker pigment composition in seagrass cores from two bays of the Cabrera Island (Balearic Islands, Spain) to asses long-term changes in phototrophic community composition and production in seagrass meadows, and identify the environmental factors triggering those changes. The proxy dataset was explored using principal component analyses (PCA): one including the pigment dataset to look for associations between producers' groups, and another one combining the pigment dataset with plausible local and global regulatory factors to assess the environmental drivers of change. Analyses of characteristic pigments and morphological fossils (cysts) showed that the abundance of dinoflagellates increased over the last 150–300 years, coeval with a rise in solar irradiance and air temperature. When compared among embayments, pigments from cyanobacteria predominated in seagrass meadows located at Es Port, a sheltered bay receiving higher terrestrial runoff; whereas pigments from diatoms, seagrasses and rodophytes were more common at Santa Maria, an exposed bay with clearer waters. Water depth also played a role in controlling the phototrophic community composition, with greater abundance of diatoms in the shallowest waters (<5 m). Posidonia oceanica is a marine phanerogam that buries a significant part of its belowground production forming an organic bioconstruction known as mat. Despite Posidonia seagrass mats have proven to be reliable archives of long-term environmental change, palaeoecological studies using seagrass archives are still scarce. Here we reconstruct four millennia of environmental dynamics in the NE coast of Spain by analysing the carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic composition of P. oceanica sheaths, the proportion of different seagrass organs throughout the seagrass mat and other sedimentological proxies. The palaeoenvironmental reconstruction informs on long-term ecosystem productivity and nutrient loading, which have been linked to global (e.g., solar radiation) and local (e.g., land-use changes) factors. The long-term environmental records obtained are compared with previous palaeoecological records obtained for the area, showing a common environmental history. First, a relative seagrass ecosystem stability at ~4000 and 2000 cal. yr BP. Then, after a productivity peak at ~1400–800 cal. yr BP, productivity shows an abrupt decline to unprecedented low values. The fluctuations in ecosystem productivity are likely explained by increases in nutrient inputs related to human activities – mostly in the bay watershed – concomitantly with changes in total solar radiation. Cumulative anthropogenic stressors after Roman times may have started to affect ecosystem resilience, dynamics and productivity, with more abrupt regime shifts during the last millennium. These results add into recent research showing the potential of seagrass archives in reconstructing environmental change and seagrass post-disturbance dynamics, hence providing unvaluable information for improving the efficiency in managing these key coastal ecosystems.

Mediterranean seasonal wetlands are amongst the world’s most endangered ecosystems. Although seasonal wetlands’ conservation is a European continental-scale priority, their long-term ecological dynamics are not well known, hampering the detection of baseline conditions. However, a long-term ecological viewpoint could aid in the detection of spatiotemporal factors controlling wetland development. We have applied a multi-proxy palaeoecological approach (palynological, microcharcoal, magnetic susceptibility, loss on ignition and diversity estimates analyses) on a 360-cm core retrieved from the El Sopetón (ElSo), a temporary wetland nested between dunes in the paradigmatic Doñana coastal area. The palaeoecological analyses reveal~300–500-year-long wetland phases linked to dune immobilisation during humid periods. During the frst wetland phase (AD~40–315), upland and wetland vegetation diversity dynamics follow opposite trends owing to the different efect that dune proliferation had on them. Fixed dune landscapes provided upland spatial diversifcation, while they promoted a longer hydro-period in ElSo, simplifying wetland vegetation. During the second wetland phase (AD~1550–2012), land-use change drove environmental dynamics. The mid-eighteenth-century pine aforestation to fx moving dunes marked an environmental tipping point, with the ElSo wetland transitioning from seasonal to permanent. This translated into a rising trend in upland diversity and a decreasing trend in the wetland one. Despite the recent pine aforestation, the palaeoecological fndings evidence the autochthonous character of Pinus pinea, as well as the naturalness of the wetland species Hydrocharis morsus-ranae and Ricciocarpos natans. The geomorphological dynamism of the diverse Doñana coastal setting is the baseline for the area, modulating wetland-upland water connectivity and, ultimately, controlling biodiversity trends.
