- Abstract
Forests that regrow naturally on abandoned fields are important for restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services, but can they also preserve the distinct regional tree floras? Using the floristic composition of 1215 early successional forests (≤20 years) in 75 human-modified landscapes across the Neotropic realm, we identified 14 distinct floristic groups, with a between-group dissimilarity of 0.97. Floristic groups were associated with location, bioregions, soil pH, temperature seasonality, and water availability. Hence, there is large continental-scale variation in the species composition of early successional forests, which is mainly associated with biogeographic and environmental factors but not with human disturbance indicators. This floristic distinctiveness is partially driven by regionally restricted species belonging to widespread genera. Early secondary forests contribute therefore to restoring and conserving the distinctiveness of bioregions across the Neotropical realm, and forest restoration initiatives should use local species to assure that these distinct floras are maintained.

While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science. In the future, humanity can benefit greatly by nurturing the grassroots communities now collectively capable of generating unique, long-term understanding of Earth's most precious forests. - Abstract
Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest sc

- Abstract
The Caquetá titi Monkey (Plecturocebus caquetensis) is a critically endangered primate due to the increasing loss of its habitat. In recent years, studies of their behavioral ecology have increased; but little is known about their reproductive behavior. Here we report the first records of reproduction and the birth of one individual of P. caquetensis in each of two observed groups in a forest fragment in Caquetá - Colombia in October 2013. We record the attack of a Pithecia milleri on the adult male while carrying the newborn.

- Abstract
Tropical forests disappear rapidly because of deforestation, yet they have the potential to regrow naturally on abandoned lands. We analyze how 12 forest attributes recover during secondary succession and how their recovery is interrelated using 77 sites across the tropics. Tropical forests are highly resilient to low-intensity land use; after 20 years, forest attributes attain 78% (33 to 100%) of their old-growth values. Recovery to 90% of old-growth values is fastest for soil (<1 decade) and plant functioning (<2.5 decades), intermediate for structure and species diversity (2.5 to 6 decades), and slowest for biomass and species composition (>12 decades). Network analysis shows three independent clusters of attribute recovery, related to structure, species diversity, and species composition. Secondary forests should be embraced as a low-cost, natural solution for ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation.

Societal Impact Statement: Tropical dry forests (TDF) underpin the wellbeing of millions, mostly rural populations; yet have suffered from severe clearing in Colombia, triggering cascading effects such as desertification. By engaging scientists, society, and institutions in the establishment of platforms for monitoring biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, crucial knowledge gaps will be bridged, helping to find a path toward sustainable development. Science‐led but socially and economically anchored information on biodiversity will help to incorporate nature's contributions to people into the society's cultural values. Ultimately, these transformative actions will translate into the comprehensive management of TDF through a greater impact in decision making. Summary Thousands of permanent plots have been established across the tropics with the purpose of monitoring tree communities. Research outcomes from these platforms, however, have been mainly directed toward the academic community, and their contribution to society has been limited so far. Here, we show how generating robust data on biodiversity has supported decision making in Colombian tropical dry forests (TDF), where less than 8% of their original cover remains. As a first step to build a national dialogue around the critical status of this ecosystem, a national collaborative network on TDF research and monitoring was born in 2014, the Red de Investigación y Monitoreo del Bosque Seco Tropical en Colombia (Red BST‐Col). Our main goal is to generate scientifically sound information that feeds into the comprehensive management of this ecosystem. To do so, a set of biodiversity monitoring platforms has been established across the country, which have already served to answer socio‐ecological questions related with deforestation drivers, citizen science, or the valuation of ecosystem services. Overall, this research agenda has nurtured the four lines that underpin the Program for the comprehensive management of dry forests in Colombia (knowledge management, preservation, restoration, and sustainable use), formulated by the Humboldt Institute, the United Nations Development Programme, and the Ministry of Environment in 2019. Many challenges are ahead, however, for a complex territory where multiple social actors and productive sectors coexist. The ultimate goal is to integrate all the dimensions of biodiversity to achieve a synthetic understanding of the functioning of the most endangered ecosystem in Colombia, and its relationship with local communities' wellbeing. Extreme drought events have negative effects on forest diversity and functioning. At the species level, however, these effects are still unclear, as species vary in their response to drought through specific functional trait combinations. We used long‐term demographic records of 21,821 trees and extensive databases of traits to understand the responses of 338 tropical dry forests tree species to ENSO2015, the driest event in decades in Northern South America. Functional differences between species were related to the hydraulic safety‐efficiency trade‐off, but unexpectedly, dominant species were characterised by high investment in leaf and wood tissues regardless of their leaf phenological habit. Despite broad functional trait combinations, tree mortality was more widespread in the functional space than tree growth, where less adapted species showed more negative net biomass balances. Our results suggest that if dry conditions increase in this ecosystem, ecological functionality and biomass gain would be reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Andean montane forests are a major global conservation priority owing to their biological richness and high level of species endemism. Botanically the Andes are very rich in species but they remain relatively unstudied. In common with montane forests elsewhere in the world, Andean forests are of great value for the provision of ecosystem services relating to water supply, regulation of regional climate and the capture and storage of carbon. The forests and their component species are however under threat. This report summarises information drawn from a wide variety of sources to provide a regional Red List of trees of Andean tropical montane forests. The species evaluation process has drawn on published national red lists of threatened species, botanical literature, specimen databases, forestry information and expert knowledge. The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria have been used for the evaluation and a component of Natalia?s PhD study has been to evaluate their use for species with limited and dispersed data. Understanding the geographical distribution of the species is very important in conservation assessment. The maps produced for this study are a valuable starting point for the Red Listing and a baseline for monitoring impacts of climate change. In this assessment 70 species are recorded as globally threatened based on the IUCN Red List of Categories and Criteria out of 127 tree species evaluated. In addition 165 national endemic trees of the region have previously been evaluated as globally threatened based on the same IUCN process. In total therefore 235 tree species are currently considered to be threatened with extinction within the Andean montane forests. Fil: Tejedor Garavito , Natalia. Increasing Andean ecosystem loss and its conservation priority reinforce the need for documenting Tropical Andean biodiversity. This research provides an updated list of vascular plant species from Ráquira in the Department of Boyacá, based on a database and herbarium review along with field collections between 2007 and 2010. Four hundred and twenty six vascular plant species were found, representing 284 genera and 99 families. Asteraceae was the most diverse family with 54 species and 36 genera, followed by Fabaceae (33 species, 21 genera) and Poaceae (33 species, 21 genera). Herbs were the most common life form followed by woody life forms (trees and shrubs). The greatest number of species was found in open lands and near river margins. Species such as Juncus ramboi were rare because of over harvesting, while other species such as Quercus humboldtii are classified as threatened in Colombia. Improving knowledge of vascular plants in Andean forests is essential, especially in dry ecosystems, which are classified as globally important and diverse biomes. The goal of this research was to characterize the population structure and density of the bombona palm Iriartea deltoidea in forests of terra firme in the southern areas of the Amacayacu National Park, in the Colombian Amazon. In six 1-ha plots and 90 transects of 50 x 1 m, all individuals, from seedlings to adults, were censused. For each individual, the trunk height, leaf morphology (i.e. entire or divided leafs, pinnae form), stilt root formation and cone height, as well as phenological condition (bracts, inflorescences, infrutescences) were recorded. A total of 2819 individuals (376±58 ind/ha) were found and grouped into three broad age categories (Seedlings, Juveniles, Adults). The category Seedlings, consisting of 96.6% of the individuals, was characterized by individuals with entire leafs and stilt root absence. This category was subdivided into six sub-categories that were statistically different based on height, number and leaf morphology. The Juvenile category consisted of 1.5% of the total number of individuals, which have pinnate leaves, stilt root cone lower than 1 m, and lack of reproductive structures. This category was divided into two subcategories (Juvenile I and II). The Adult category included pinnate individuals with stilt root cone above 1 m height and with reproductive structures. It corresponded to 1.9% individuals and was subdivided into two subcategories (Adults I and II) based on significant differences in the trunk height. The population density of this palm exhibited the common pattern found in other natural populations of tropical plants, that is, following a Poisson model where individuals at early life stages (Seedlings) are very abundant, decreasing in number with age (Juveniles and Adults). Within the ten age categories and subcategories described, Seedlings II was the most abundant (129±38 ind/ha) while Juveniles I was the least (3±2 ind/ha). Adult density was slightly higher than that of Juveniles. We discuss the importance of using a more refined age categorization.

It is recognized that non-timber forest products (NTFP) are important for the well-being of many rural communities and contribute to the conservation of tropical forests. As an approach to understanding the impact of harvesting and from the review of several studies, this paper sets out the consequences of this activity in different ecological levels (individuals, populations and ecosystems) and the ways and purposes of harvesting, introducing the current status and trends of research leading to a sustainable use and management of NTFP. We conclude that the study of these products in a systemic way is a priority, and that ir must go beyond the biological and ecological context, and involve the social, economic, cultural and political contexts through the development of pattern-predictive models, which could ensure the non-reduction of these resources.

- Abstract
Biological invasions are the second most important cause of biodiversity loss in the world. Invasive species successfully compete with native species and in most cases negatively affect invaded ecosystems. Several studies have focused on identifying wich characteristics promote the invasiveness of the species and resulting ecological impacts, yet few have assessed how land cover transformation enables colonization of species that are tolerant to limited resources, and if this condition is a driver for biological invasion. To establish the invasibility of a dry ecosystem such as the one in the Magdalena River Valley, the change in vegetation cover in areas currently dominated by species with invasive potentials (Vachellia farnesiana, Leucaena leucocephala, and Prosospis juliflora) was analyzed for a period of approximately 70 years. Obtained results show that areas colonized by potentially invasive species had greater transformation dynamics, based on land cover persistence through time. In contrast, forest areas, which lack potentially invasive species, only presented one transformation period and more than 50 years of ecosystem recovery. These results show how ecosystems historically transformed and disturbed can facilitate species invasion processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest sc

The dry forest in Colombia es an ecosystem that presents extreme environmental conditions, like frequent and extreme droughts, where the woody species have developed adaptations that allow them fight with these conditions. These adaptations are associate in a big percent, to the functional strategies and the wood's anatomical traits. The wood's anatomical traits fulfill important functions inside the tree like: transversal and longitudinal transport of water and nutrients, water 's storage and investment in support tissues, affecting the growth and survival of the plant. We studied the anatomical traits and the functional strategies of the wood in dry forest species and their variations through of a drought gradient. Were described eleven (11) wood's anatomical traits in sixty (60) species present in five (5) permanent plots, the microscopic description was doing in histological mounts by means of optical microscopy, following the lineaments of IAWA Committe. The majority of the functional traits presented a correlate with the drought gradient (annual precipitation and precipitation in the most dry months), between these six (6) have a positive relation, vessels length (R2= 0,086 y R2= 0,322), rays length (R2= 0,086 y R2= 0,263), rays width (R2= 0,095, y R2= 0,074), fibers thickness (R2= 0,064 y R2= 0,143), wood density (R2= 0,131 y R2= 0,209 ) and fibers length (R2= 0,343 y R2= 0,435); and two (2) have a negative relation with the gradient, pits diameter (R2= -0,086 y R2= -0,109), and moisture content (R2= -0,013 y R2= -0,117). The tolerance and evasion functional strategies present too a correlation with the drought gradient (R2= 0,211, R2= 0,241 y R2= 0,071, R2= 0,119 respectively). The results show that the wood features play an important role as a functional strategy for evasion or tolerance of plants to drought.

Land use changes are considered one of the greatest global changes triggers, affecting biodiversity and the services ecosystems provide to society. Understanding the dynamics behind said changes is quintessential for resources’ conservation and management, as well as for the environmental planning of productive landscape. This research analyses the change dynamic in Tota Lake land cover in Boyacá, by examining its spatial and temporal characteristics in the time frame between 1992 and 2013; and assessing the effects such dynamic has over the water resource through local community perception. As results, there was a persistence in land cover of 96.31% between 1992-2000 and 68.65% for the period 2000-2013; where in the years 1992 and 2010 pastures land cover were dominant (41.57% and 41.63% respectively); grasslands (32.8% and 31.85% respectively) were the land cover with more changes in a transition towards pastures (20.3%). Landscape’s heterogeneity is maintained and its biophysical, socioeconomic and use intensity aspects were the associated factors in the maintaining of persistence in the region. Despite this, there are significant differences in the persistence during the analyzed time frames in the municipalities of Aquitania, Cuítiva and Tota. The results indicate that changing process in land cover is stable and its product of the intensification in farming activities over five decades. The local community perceived that there has being an increment in onion crops in the last 20 years due to the giving of licenses and the use of motor pumps, causing impacts on soil and water, deteriorating its quality and diminishing its availability due to its the smallholding condition, which in turn tend to intensify the production. However, the community perceived the benefits that both the lake and its nearby paramos provide to their environment, showing positive disposition towards conservancy of these areas.

Forest fragmentation can alter ecological processes that are fundamental to the provision of ecosystem services, where functional diversity is a component that is sensitive to its effects. Analyzing the functional response of tree communities to fragmentation, can provide new approaches for conservation and forests management under transformation scenarios. This research analyzes the effects of fragmentation on functional tree diversity associated to aboveground biomass (AGB) in high Andean forest remnants. Based on four landscape metrics, three categories of fragmentation were constructed, where 10 plots of 0.1ha were established. All live trees (DHB ≥ 5cm) were sampled, and AGB was estimated per plot. Four functional traits associated to biomass were measured, and three components of the functional variety were calculated: CWM (dominance), CWV (variance) and DF (multi-trait indices). The category of large fragments had higher mean biomass (506.2 Mg ha-1) than medium fragments (216.7 Mg ha-1) and small fragments (187.8 Mg ha-1). Fragmentation did not exhibit effects on functional dominance, but on the variance of some traits. It is suggested that edge contrast plays a crucial role in functional dispersion, and that the interior of the fragment remains stable in terms of biomass-associated functionality. The importance of the small fragments in the maintenance of the tree functional diversity and as reservoir of aboveground biomass is emphasized, being important to consider them in the strategies of conservation and connectivity of these forests.
