Abstract

Infectious diseases, transmitted directly or indirectly, are among the leading causes of epidemics and pandemics. Consequently, several open challenges exist in predicting epidemic outbreaks, detecting variants, tracing contacts, discovering new drugs, and fighting misinformation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can provide tools to deal with these scenarios, demonstrating promising results in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. AI is becoming increasingly integrated into various aspects of society. However, ensuring that AI benefits are distributed equitably and that they are used responsibly is crucial. Multiple countries are creating regulations to address these concerns, but the borderless nature of AI requires global cooperation to define regulatory and guideline consensus. Considering this, The Global South AI for Pandemic & Epidemic Preparedness & Response Network (AI4PEP) has developed an initiative comprising 16 projects across 16 countries in the Global South, seeking to strengthen equitable and responsive public health systems that leverage Southern-led responsible AI solutions to improve prevention, preparedness, and response to emerging and re-emerging infectious disease outbreaks. This opinion introduces our branches in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries and discusses AI governance in LAC in the light of biotechnology. Our network in LAC has high potential to help fight infectious diseases, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, generating opportunities for the widespread use of AI techniques to improve the health and well-being of their communities.

Abstract

ObjectiveEicosanoids modulate inflammation via complex networks involving different pathways and downstream mediators, including oxylipins. Although altered eicosanoids are linked to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), suggesting that metabolization is enhanced, the role of oxylipins in disease stratification remains unexplored. This study was undertaken to characterize oxylipin networks during the earliest stages of RA and evaluate their associations with clinical features and treatment outcomes.MethodsIn total, 60 patients with early RA (according to the American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism 2010 criteria), 11 individuals with clinically suspect arthralgia (CSA), and 28 healthy control subjects were recruited. Serum samples were collected at the time of onset. In the early RA group, 50 patients who had not been exposed to disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) or glucocorticoid treatment at the time of recruitment were prospectively followed up at 6 and 12 months after having received conventional synthetic DMARDs. A total of 75 oxylipins, mostly derived from arachidonic, eicosapentanoic, and linoleic acids, were identified in the serum by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry.ResultsUnivariate analyses demonstrated differences in expression patterns of 14 oxylipins across the RA, CSA, and healthy control groups, with each exhibiting a different trajectory. Network analyses revealed a strong grouping pattern of oxylipins in RA patients, whereas in individuals with CSA, a fuzzy network of oxylipins with higher degree and closeness was found. Partial least-squares discriminant analyses yielded variable important projection scores of >1 for 22 oxylipins, which allowed the identification of 2 clusters. Cluster usage differed among the groups (P = 0.003), and showed associations with disease severity and low rates of remission at 6 and 12 months in RA patients who were initially treatment-naive. Pathway enrichment analyses revealed different precursors and pathways between the groups, highlighting the relevance of the arachidonic acid pathway in individuals with CSA and the lipooxygenase pathway in patients with early RA. In applying distinct oxylipin signatures, subsets of seropositive and seronegative RA could be identified.ConclusionOxylipin networks differ across stages during the earliest phases of RA. These distinct oxylipin networks could potentially elucidate pathways with clinical relevance for disease progression, clinical heterogeneity, and treatment response.

370 p., La presente tesis doctoral proporciona nuevos conocimientos acerca del desarrollo de recubrimientos multifuncionales de altas prestaciones sobre aleaciones de fundición de Al-Si mediante la tecnología de electro-oxidación por plasma (PEO). Para lograr este fin, se han desarrollado nuevos electrolitos alcalinos de base acuosa, formulados específicamente para este tipo de aleaciones, al mismo tiempo que se ha investigado la influencia de los parámetros eléctricos de proceso más relevantes. Así, se han logrado obtener recubrimientos de elevado espesor, densidad, homogeneidad y dureza, además de funcionalidad estética, sobre complejas aleaciones secundarias e hipereutécticas de fundición de Al-Si. Además, los nuevos recubrimientos desarrollados también han presentado una excelente mejora de las propiedades tribológicas y dieléctricas, así como elevada resistencia frente a la corrosión y la tribocorrosión.Los resultados extraídos de este estudio ponen de manifiesto que la tecnología PEO no solo es una alternativa más eficiente y sostenible frente al anodizado convencional, sino que su aplicación en el sector del transporte contribuiría a la mejora de la sostenibilidad ambiental y al desarrollo de componentes de mayores prestaciones.

26. Mother Pedagogies of Migration: Multiplicitous Identities and Pedagogies

Abstract

This article draws on two collaborative ethnographic projects to discuss a praxis of mother pedagogies of migration (MPM). The first project centers on Mexicana campesinas (farmworker womxn) in the Yakama Nation who use agricultural land as a context for teaching and learning, and the second project focuses on a community of Indigenous Yucatec Maya and Latina mothers at a K-5 school in San Francisco, California, who develop forms of parent engagement along the dimensions of Indigenous language and cultural revalorization. Drawing on Chicana/Latina philosophers Ortega (2016) and Lugones (2003), we discuss two pedagogical elements central to MPM: relationality and indeterminacy. Relationality is examined by drawing on campesinas teaching each other how to prune in a vineyard. Indeterminacy is contextualized by illustrating Indigenous and Latinx mothers working together preparing food for a school event. These elements demonstrate immigrant mothers' who strategize and insert their knowledge within dominant educational contexts.

Abstract

Empirical evidence demonstrates the effect of productive failure (Kapur, 2008) on disciplinary knowledge. However, there is no clear theoretical explanation for why this is the case. Empirical evidence on argumentation and education shows the impact of curricular embedded deliberative argumentation on learning. However, these two trends of research have been mainly isolated, with insufficient synergy. Through the analysis of a group of sixth-graders collaborating around problems of natural selection, the aim of this paper is the theoretical exploration of the process of learning in productive failure designs through a focus on argumentative peer dialogue. The paper proposes an articulation of these two fields of research (productive failure and argumentation), which sheds light on both the learning dynamics in productive failure settings and the relevant insights for argumentative designs. The new possibilities for empirical research on learning through peer interaction opened up by these interconnected fields of research are proposed and discussed.

38. Argumentation Skills Mediate the Effect of Peer Argumentation on Content Knowledge in Middle-School Students

Abstract

There is compelling evidence that arguing with peers in educational contexts fosters students' content knowledge and argumentation skills. Indeed, curricula have already been developed that, through tailored support for peer argumentation, promote both content knowledge and argumentation skills simultaneously. However, we do not yet know how to optimize the occurrence of peer argumentation, although there are suggestions in the literature that computers may have a role to play. Likewise, there are uncertainties about the mechanisms through which the benefits of peer argumentation are achieved, especially whether (and how) there is interdependence across the two types of benefit. In this paper, we report a quasi-experimental study randomized at class level, which addresses these two issues. A total of 502 fourth-grade students and 20 classes and teachers covered a module in science under three conditions: (1) using a curriculum that was already known to promote peer argumentation and content knowledge (standard support), (2) using the same curriculum but with additional computer-based support (computer-enhanced support), and (3) a routinely taught control group. Students' argumentation skills and content knowledge were assessed. Content knowledge was assessed prior to and after the intervention, with immediate and delayed posttests. Multiple regression analyses showed that peer argumentation was indeed most frequent in the computer-enhanced condition. Moreover, on the basis of a multilevel path analysis, we found that individual contributions to peer argumentation had a direct effect on posttest argumentation skills and an indirect effect on posttest content knowledge, both immediate and delayed. The indirect effect of argumentation on delayed posttest content knowledge was mediated by immediate posttest knowledge and posttest argumentation skills.

45. Learning with Immigrant Indigenous Parents in School and Community

Abstract

In this article I introduce a framework that centers indigenous educational sovereignty in university-school partnerships. Developed from collaborative work with Indigenous Maya families who are migrants from Yucatan, Mexico, the framework operates from an understanding that Indigenous parents have knowledge that is important for their children to acquire and that schools are key sites to support this knowledge. I begin the article with a description of the framework that guides our participation in the partnership and which supports indigenous educational sovereignty. I then provide a brief overview of research addressing the growing population of Indigenous Latinx families in US schools. I discuss the partnership which developed from a qualitative study on academic literacies and expanded into a colaborativo (collaborative) that centers on the revalorization and maintenance of indigenous Maya culture and language at the school. I conclude with an example from an activity organized under this partnership that illustrates our consultative process in our family-school-university collaboration.

Abstract

The synergistic effect of antineoplastic drug co-encapsulation systems has made them highly regarded due to their improved pharmacological efficacy. Biopolymer-coated liposomes were evaluated for paclitaxel and doxorubicin co-encapsulation in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines. These nanosystems are characterized by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and UV–VIS spectroscopy. The conventional and hybrid liposomal systems presented sizes of 150 to 230 nm and %EE greater than 80% for the encapsulated active ingredients. These drug-laden liposomal systems significantly decreased cell viability in both breast cancer cell lines compared with liposome-free drugs. The delivery of antineoplastic drugs in breast cancer therapy could potentially benefit from new hybrids for drug co-encapsulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

PEO constitutes a promising surface technology for the development of protective and functional ceramic coatings on lightweight alloys. Despite its interesting advantages, including enhanced wear and corrosion resistances and eco-friendliness, the industrial implementation of PEO technology is limited by its relatively high energy consumption. This study explores the development and optimization of novel PEO processes by means of machine learning (ML) to improve the coating thickness. For this purpose, ML models random forest and XGBoost were employed to predict the thickness of the developed PEO coatings based on the key process variables (frequency, current density, and electrolyte composition). The predictive performance was significantly improved by including the composition of the used electrolyte in the models. Furthermore, Shapley values identified the pulse frequency and the TiO2 concentration in the electrolyte as the most influential variables, with higher values leading to increased coating thickness. The residual analysis revealed a certain heteroscedasticity, which suggests the need for additional samples with high thickness to improve the accuracy of the model. This study reveals the potential of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven optimization in PEO processes, which could pave the way for more efficient and cost-effective industrial applications. The findings achieved further emphasize the significance of integrating interactions between variables, such as frequency and TiO2 concentration, into the design of processing operations.
