Abstract

In this contribution to the 2021 Snowmass community planning exercise that informs the American strategy for particle physics, we present the prospects for measurements of the top-quark couplings at future colliders. Projections are presented for the high luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider and a future Higgs/electroweak/top factory electron-positron collider. Results are presented for the expected bounds on Wilson coefficients of the relevant SMEFT operators from a global fit to the top physics sector., Comment: Contribution Snowmass 2021

Abstract

Water is a critical resource for human survival worldwide, and its availability and quality in natural reservoirs such as lakes and rivers must be monitored. In that way, wireless dynamic sensor networks can help monitor water quality. These networks have significantly advanced across various sectors, including industrial automation and environmental monitoring. Moreover, the Internet of Things has emerged as a global technological marvel, garnering interest for its ability to facilitate information visualization and ease of deployment—the combination of wireless dynamic sensor networks and the Internet of Things improves water monitoring and helps to care for this vital resource. This article presents the design and deployment of a wireless dynamic sensor network comprising a mobile node outfitted with multiple sensors for remote aquatic navigation and a stationary node similarly equipped and linked to a server via the IoT. Both nodes can measure parameters like pH, temperature, and total dissolved solids (TDS), enabling real-time data monitoring through a user interface and generating a database for future reference. The integrated control system within the developed interface enhances the mobile node’s ability to survey various points of interest. The developed project enabled real-time monitoring of the aforementioned parameters, with the recorded data being stored in a database for subsequent graphing and analysis using the IoT. The system facilitated data collection at various points of interest, allowing for a graphical representation of parameter evolution. This included consistent temperature trends, neutral and alkaline zone data for pH levels, and variations in total dissolved solids (TDS) recorded by the mobile node, reaching up to 100 ppm.

Abstract

Recent measurements at the Large Hadron Collider allow for a robust and precise characterisation of the electro-weak interactions of the top quark. We present the results of a global analysis at next-to-leading order precision including LHC, LEP/SLD and Tevatron data in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. We include a careful analysis of the impact of correlations among measurements, as well as of the uncertainties in the Effective Field Theory setup itself. We find remarkably robust global fit results, with central values in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction, and 95% probability bounds on Wilson coefficients that range from $\pm$ 0.35 to $\pm$ 8 TeV$^{-2}$. This result represents a considerable improvement over previous studies, thanks to the addition of differential cross-section measurements in associated production processes of top quarks and neutral gauge bosons.

Abstract

Axion-like particles (ALPs), predicted in theories beyond the Standard Model, can have observational effects on the transparency of the Universe to $\gamma$ rays in the presence of magnetic fields. In this work, we search for effects compatible with the existence of ALPs with 80 months of data from the ${\it Fermi}$ Large Area Telescope, by comparing the distributions of observed highest energy photons from sources beyond redshifts of z $\geq$ 0.1 with theoretical predictions in the presence of ALPs. We find no evidence for an increased $\gamma$-ray transparency due to ALPs and therefore we set limits on the ALPs parameters assuming a value of the intergalactic magnetic field strength of 1 nG. Photon-ALP couplings above $10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$ are excluded for ALP masses $m_{a}$ $\lesssim3.0$ neV. Abstract

The All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO) is a probe class mission concept that will provide essential contributions to multimessenger astrophysics in the late 2020s and beyond. AMEGO combines high sensitivity in the 200 keV to 10 GeV energy range with a wide field of view, good spectral resolution, and polarization sensitivity. Therefore, AMEGO is key in the study of multimessenger astrophysical objects that have unique signatures in the gamma-ray regime, such as neutron star mergers, supernovae, and flaring active galactic nuclei. The order-of-magnitude improvement compared to previous MeV missions also enables discoveries of a wide range of phenomena whose energy output peaks in the relatively unexplored medium-energy gamma-ray band., Comment: Astro2020 APC White Paper Updated to make small change to author list in metadata

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Addressing deep carious lesions poses significant challenges in daily dental practice due to the inherent complexity of their treatment. Traditionally, complete removal of carious tissues has been the norm, potentially leading to pulp tissue exposure and subsequent pulpitis. In contemporary dentistry, there is a growing preference for minimally invasive techniques, such as selective removal, offering a more conservative approach with enhanced predictability and success rates. Materials and Methods: Our study commenced with a comprehensive systematic review. After that, we performed a meta-analysis focused exclusively on randomized controlled trials involving permanent dentition. Our investigation incorporated seven selected articles, which scrutinized success rates and the incidence of pulp exposure in minimally invasive techniques (MIT) versus conventional techniques (CT). Statistical analysis employed U Mann–Whitney and Wilcoxon tests to interpret the results. Results: Although the difference did not reach statistical significance, MIT demonstrated marginally superior success rates compared to CT. Furthermore, MIT exhibited a lower percentage of pulp exposure when contrasted with CT. However, due to the limited sample size, statistical significance for this difference could not be established. Conclusions: Minimally invasive techniques for caries removal emerge as a conservative and promising approach to safeguard pulp tissues in comparison to conventional techniques. The need for additional randomized controlled trials is emphasized to unequivocally establish the superior success rates of these procedures over their conventional counterparts.
