4. Measuring topological invariants from generalized edge states in polaritonic quasicrystals

Abstract

We investigate the topological properties of Fibonacci quasicrystals using cavity polaritons. Composite structures made of the concatenation of two Fibonacci sequences allow investigating generalized edge states forming in the gaps of the fractal energy spectrum. We employ these generalized edge states to determine the topological invariants of the quasicrystal. When varying a structural degree of freedom (phason) of the Fibonacci sequence, the edge states spectrally traverse the gaps, while their spatial symmetry switches: the periodicity of this spectral and spatial evolution yields direct measurements of the gap topological numbers. The topological invariants that we determine coincide with those assigned by the gap-labeling theorem, illustrating the direct connection between the fractal and topological properties of Fibonacci quasicrystals., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Topological properties of crystals and quasicrystals is a subject of recent and growing interest. This Letter reports an experiment where, for certain quasicrystals, these properties can be directly retrieved from diffraction. We directly observe, using an interferometric approach, all the topological invariants of finite-length Fibonacci chains in their diffraction pattern. Abstract

We report on a study of topological properties of Fibonacci quasicrystals. Chern numbers which label the dense set of spectral gaps, are shown to be related to the underlying palindromic symmetry. Topological and spectral features are related to the two independent phases of the scattering matrix: the total phase shift describing the frequency spectrum and the chiral phase sensitive to topological features. Conveniently designed gap modes with spectral properties directly related to the Chern numbers allow to scan these phases. Abstract

The resistivity as a function of temperature, magnetic field and its orientation for atomically flat SrTiO3\LaAlO3 interfaces with carrier densities of ~3*10^13 cm^-2 is reported. At low magnetic fields superconductivity is observed below 130mK. The temperature dependence of the high field magnetoresistance and its strong anisotropy suggest possible magnetic ordering below 35K. The origin of this ordering and its possible relation to superconductivity are discussed.

Abstract

We have measured the temperature dependence of the conductance in long V-groove quantum wires (QWRs) fabricated in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. Our data is consistent with recent theories developed within the framework of the Luttinger liquid model, in the limit of weakly disordered wires. We show that for the relatively small amount of disorder in our QWRs, the value of the interaction parameter g is g=0.66, which is the expected value for GaAs. However, samples with a higher level of disorder show conductance with stronger temperature dependence, which does not allow their treatment in the framework of perturbation theory. Trying to fit such data with perturbation-theory models leads inevitably to wrong (lower) values of g., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

To obtain a complete description of the paradeigmata voluntatis, it is necessary to question natural science as well as philosophical and literary documents. Therefore it becomes interesting to face Pliny the Elder, a contemporary of Seneca. Pliny’s attention is turned to man placed in a world where the will of destiny plays an explicit role, in a completely unpredictable game of alternation between positive and negative. A method of investigation is emerging that does not disdain to engage between science and myth, between empirical reality and dreams, between limits and protagonists seeking their overcoming, as in the case of Caesar and Pompey.

Abstract

'Will’ descends, etymologically, from voluntas. However, in the meaning of voluntas it is no longer possible to grasp the terminological plurivocity present in Greek language. Consequently, the theory of action, which Aristotle and Greek thought in general had extensively dealt with, in the Roman context has adapted to a simplified conceptual framework. The essays collected here have allowed us to focus on a brand new articulated paradigm. Within it, we find a renewed concept of ‘will’: the voluntas which is explained in the modern interpretation of the ‘voluntary act’, and ‘voluntarism’ tout-court.

Abstract

Abstract Surge arresters are at the forefront of protection against voltage surges. The loss of the protective effect of surge arresters imposes accidents and unplanned shutdowns on the power system. It directly affects the interruption of power supplies and imposes fines on service providers. Monitoring and diagnostics in the lightning rod field require studies and work that present the degradation behaviour of surge arresters to help develop and improve existing techniques. This paper presents the development of a laboratory with a low-energy, mobile current waveform impulse generator. It allows for conducting aging tests by applying discharges to low-voltage zinc oxide surge arresters used in the energy distribution sector. Samples of surge arresters were subjected to the discharges produced by the developed generator, and they exhibited degradation, thus showing asymmetry between the positive and negative half-cycles of leakage current.
