Glycoproteins -- Health aspects ,Obesity -- Physiological aspects ,Sleep apnea syndromes -- Diagnosis ,Health - Abstract
Purpose Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by chronic intermittent hypoxia which induces inflammation in blood vessels leading to the development of cardiovascular comorbidities. Several studies implicated the role of P-selectin in vascular inflammation of OSA. P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1) is the main activator for P-selectin and is involved in immune cell trafficking. However, PSGL-1 has not been analyzed in OSA. The aim of the study was to investigate plasma PSGL-1 and P-selectin levels to have a deeper understanding on their interaction in obstructive sleep apnea. Methods Fifty-one untreated patients with OSA and 42 non-OSA controls were recruited. Plasma PSGL-1 levels were determined in evening and morning samples, P-selectin levels were analyzed in morning samples using commercially available ELISA kits. Polysomnography was performed in all participants. OSA was defined by an apnea-hypopnea index [greater than or equal to] 5/h. Results PSGL-1 levels did not differ between controls and OSA patients either in the evening or in the morning. Although, there was no difference between controls (16.9/6.8-40.8 ng/ml) and patients with OSA (19.6/8.4-56.8, p = 0.24), patients with severe OSA had increased plasma P-selectin levels (25.6/8.4-56.8 ng/ml) compared to mild OSA patients (14.1/8.5-35.3 ng/ml, p = 0.006) and controls (p = 0.03). Conclusions P-selectin expression relates to disease severity suggesting a pathophysiological role in endothelial cell activation. PSGL-1 levels are unaltered in OSA, suggesting an alternative activation pathway for P-selectin in OSA., Author(s): P. Horváth [sup.1] , Z. Lázár [sup.1] , G. Gálffy [sup.1] , R. Puskás [sup.1] , L. This paper investigates the gender perspectives in the twin transition of companies in Serbia’s agriculture and food sector, focusing on their adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) and green/ environmental activities. Using primary data from computer-assisted telephone interviews, a comprehensive survey was conducted among sector companies. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests to compare differences between groups. The results highlight the significant impact of gender diversity on digitalisation adoption. However, disparities emerge in the green transition, particularly in waste reduction through recycling, raw material reuse, and supplier selection based on environmental criteria. No gender-specific differences were found in reducing harmful emissions or using ecofriendly packaging. This study enhances understanding of gender dynamics in the agri-food sector’s twin transformation and highlights how gender perspectives influence digital and environmental practices. The findings inform policymakers and businesses on promoting gendersensitive strategies for sustainable development and economic growth in Serbia and beyond.

- Abstract
The book is dedicated to the implementation of different multi-criteria decision-making techniques for various problems concerning planning and operation of the smart grid from the Society 5.0 perspective. It consists of a practical explanation of several multi-criteria approaches and examples of their application to real problems. In this book, the choice of the optimal smart grid strategy in planning and operation is made. Various areas of smart grid problems are analyzed, from the smart grid project efficiency assessment to the electric vehicle charging schedule optimization. The comparison of alternatives is made using different techniques taking into account the presence of multiple criteria of both qualitative and quantitative nature, different performance indicators, and the uncertain environment of the smart grid. The book outlines in clear terms how the electricity grid can be modernized in such a way that it monitors, protects, and automatically optimizes the operation of its interconnected elements, taking into account different stakeholders and criteria and society in general. The book covers various smart grid aspects—from the distributed generator through the medium-voltage network and distribution system, to energy storage installations and to end-use consumers and their thermostats, electric vehicles, appliances, and other household devices. The book serves as a practical guide for researchers, energy and utility professionals, power system planners, regulators, policymakers, and others in the field.

Supply of Ready Mixed Concrete (RMC) is a common process of concrete works on any structure. There is often a need to supply one or more construction sites simultaneously from multiple concrete plants. This paper presents a new simulation model of RMC supply and delivery from three concrete plants to three construction sites. The model is dynamic, easily managed, and adjustable and it allows proper estimation of the cost and time required to solve the problem of RMC supply. Model verification was performed using a case study of concrete supply to construction sites in the city of Niš, Serbia. The case study is based on real parameters obtained from specific concrete plants and construction sites. The results of the simulation experiment with varying number of mixers indicate that there is a significant influence of vehicle number and volume on idling costs. Based on the model analysis in the case study, scenario 10 (minimum total idling cost is 14,09 €) is recommended as the optimal combination of truck mixers for the considered case study. The simulation results indicate that the selection of an adequate combination can significantly reduce the costs of idling, for both the mixer and the pump, which leads to minimal idling time and, consequently, to timely pouring of concrete without reducing its quality.

Improving the quality of equipment training for the Heavy Equipment Operators (HEO) is a critical task in improving safety and eliminating equipment-related injuries in mining. One of major responsibilities for the HEOs is proper machine inspection. Traditional miner safety training includes the use of hardcopy documents and video instructions. However, modern mobile and computer technology offers tremendous potential to improve the training process. In this study, we apply a 360-degree camera, open-source platform WordPress™, and the software Unity3D in order to create materials and tools for the HEOs safety training to help trainees better understand the pre-shift safety machine inspection. The computer-based safety task training developed in this research is tested and implemented at a surface mine in the southern United States.

This paper explores the challenges in meeting the regulatory requirements of short food supply chains in 9 European countries based upon findings from the European H2020 3-year project "SMARTCHAIN". The assessments of the barriers that small food producers face in meeting different regulatory requirements are presented. Drawing on the results of 10 multi-actor workshops that involved 124 participants, the most problematic policy frameworks for short food supply chains and key obstacles in different regulatory requirements are summarized. This research shows that current EU and national regulation is an obstacle to the development of short food supply chains, meaning that additional efforts are needed to tailor the regulations to small food producers involved in short supply chains. Furthermore, it is necessary to consider the introduction of more effective support measures for short food supply chains.

One of the most important tasks of managing the construction process is to achieve the highest possible productivity. The productivity that can be achieved on a construction site depends on a number of influencing factors and on the type of work that is executed. Concrete works are a crucial activity when constructing high-rise buildings built in the RC frame structural system. Therefore, it is very important to adequately manage the concreting process in order to meet the set deadlines and reduce costs. This paper presents an approach for predicting the productivity of the concreting process based on the conducted quantitative research, by recording the concreting process on construction sites of buildings in Niš, Serbia. The concreting of reinforced concrete columns and walls on seven construction sites was recorded for 20 months. The total amount of fresh concrete that is built into the elements is 848 m3 and the total duration is 114 h of work. Factors that can affect productivity have been identified and, by applying the multiple linear regression and simulation methods and techniques and using the discrete event method and the agent-based method, models have been developed to predict the productivity of the concreting of reinforced concrete columns and walls. An analysis of the developed models was performed, and a comparative presentation was provided.

The present work was focused on doping of 1% and 5% both of Nd2O3 and Sm2O3 in geopolymer gels. One of the main goals was to determine the influence of the behavior of Nd and Sm as dopants and structural nanoparticles changes of the final geopolymer formed. It is shown that the disorder formed by alkali activation of metakaolin can accommodate the rare earth cations Nd3+ and Sm3+ into their aluminosilicate framework structure. The main geopolymerization product identified in gels is Al-rich (Na)-AS-H gel comprising Al and Si in tetrahedral coordination. Na+ ions were balancing the negative charge resulting from Al3+ in tetrahedral coordination. The changes in the structures of the final product (geopolymer/Nd2O3; Sm2O3), has been characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Nucleation at the seed surfaces leads to the formation of phase-separated gels from rare earth phase early in the reaction process. It is confirmed that Nd and Sm have been shown to form unstable hydroxides Nd(OH)3 and Sm(OH)3 that are in equilibrium with the corresponding oxides.

One way to optimize wastewater treatment system infrastructure, its operations, monitoring, maintenance and management is through development of smart forecasting, monitoring and failure prediction systems using machine learning modeling. The aim of this paper was to develop a model that was able to predict a water pump failure based on the asymmetrical type of data obtained from sensors such as water levels, capacity, current and flow values. Several machine learning classification algorithms were used for predicting water pump failure. Using the classification algorithms, it was possible to make predictions of future values with a simple input of current values, as well as predicting probabilities of each sample belonging to each class. In order to build a prediction model, an asymmetrical type dataset containing the aforementioned variables was used.
