Abstract Background The white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is close to extinction, listed as “Near Threatened”, with a decreasing population on the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. In at least 50% of the specimens in captivity, podiatric diseases, such as osteitis, osteomyelitis, chip fractures, enthesophytes, fractures and osteoarthritis were found during necropsy. These osteal deformations cause further pathogenic alterations in the soft tissues, particularly in the digital cushion. The literature provides good description of the skeleton of the rhino’s limbs, but similar for the vascular system is non-existent. In order to recognize the symptoms in an early state and for a successful surgical treatment, precise knowledge of the vascular anatomy is essential. The purpose of our study was to provide detailed anatomical description of the blood supply of the digits and that of the digital cushion. Results The blood supply of the distal foot, digits and digital cushions were perfectly visible on the reconstructed and coloured 3D models. The deep palmar arch provided not only the blood supply to the digits but had a palmaro-distal running branch which developed a trifurcation proximal to the proximal sesamoid bones of the third digit. Two of its branches participated in the blood supply of the digits’ proximal palmar surface, while the major branch supplied the digital cushion from proximal direction. Conclusions Our findings show a unique blood supply: the main vessels of the digital cushion stem both directly from the deep palmar arch and from the digits’ own arteries. The detailed description of vessels may be useful in planning surgery of the region and also in cases where the veins of the ear are not accessible.

IntroductionFoot health is crucial for elephants, as pathological lesions of the feet are a leading cause of euthanasia in captive elephants, which are endangered species. Proper treatment of the feet, particularly in conditions affecting the digits and the digital cushion, requires a thorough understanding of the underlying anatomy. However, only limited literature exists due to the small population and the epidemiological foot diseases which often precludes many deceased elephants from scientific study. The aim of this study was to provide a detailed anatomical description of the blood supply to the African elephant’s hindfoot.MethodsThe healthy right hindlimb of a 19-year-old deceased female African savanna elephant was examined using computed tomography. Following a native sequence, 48 mL of barium-based contrast agent was injected into the caudal and cranial tibial arteries, and a subsequent scan was performed. The images were processed with 3D Slicer software.ResultsThe medial and lateral plantar arteries run in a symmetrical pattern. They each have a dorsal and a plantar branch, which reach the plantar skin before turning toward the axial plane of the sole to reach the digital cushion from the proximal direction. An accurate 3D model of the arteries and the bones of the foot, a set of labeled images and an animation of the blood supply have been created for ease of understanding.DiscussionIn contrast to domestic ungulates, the digital cushion of the hindlimb is supplied differently from that of the forelimb. The lack of large vessels in its deeper layers indicates a slow regeneration time. This novel anatomical information may be useful in the planning of surgical interventions and in emergency medical procedures.

As the multi-scale study of biodiversity is extremely resource-intensive, proxy indicators taken from various databases are often used to answer questions on a larger spatial scale. Considering differences in the scale and methods, the application of such indicators (especially from different monitoring systems) requires careful consideration and standard methods of validation. In order to demonstrate this, we validated the results of the MAES-HU (National Ecosystem Assessment of Hungary) forest condition assessment (based on the Hungarian NFD – National Forestry Database) with thematically richer, finer-scale field data. We also examined the relationships of some MAES-HU indicators with other variables significant for nature conservation, not currently included in the NFD. We found the MAES-HU scoring was similar to the fine-scale score results in the case of tree species composition indicators, however, less so for structural indicators. The MAES-HU assessment uses the values of the NFD, averaged for forest management units, and thus tends to underestimate structural variety. This highlights a potential loss of important conservation-related information. During the examination of relationships with other indicators that are not included in the large-scale MAES-HU assessment, we found that the presence of large-diameter and old trees correlates with tree-related microhabitats and large standing deadwood, but no relationship was found for other investigated indicators (game pressure, further deadwood indicators). This highlights the need for integrating some key conservation indicators (presence of old and large trees, quantity and quality of standing and lying deadwood) into existing forest monitoring systems in order to optimise the resources dedicated to multipurpose data collection. Our study also highlights that applying indicators as proxies requires the full knowledge of monitoring methods and validated indicator-indicanda relationships.

Ungulate populations have surged to unsustainable levels in multiple areas in recent decades due to human intervention, making forestry and conservation practices arduous. The population of ungulates is also currently displaying a rising trend in Hungary, prompting decision-makers to commence substantial reduction efforts. Our study examined the ungulate impact in three forested regions of Hungary, employing field survey sampling plots on almost 50,000 hectares. Our findings revealed that regeneration browsing and soil disturbance were evenly high in these areas, while the cover of the regeneration layer was extremely low. Ungulate pressure was suspected as the cause of the lack of regeneration. Based on habitat and vegetation conditions, we divided our sample as favourable and unfavourable for regeneration. The cover of the regeneration categories was not significantly different between the two sets. The evidence of the direct indicators, including browsing and soil disturbance, coupled with the lack of regeneration, leads us to infer indirect signs of ungulate pressure. The absence of older and taller vegetation in the area also suggests long-standing ungulate pressure. Our investigation suggests that the high ungulate population can cause low abundance, even the lack of regeneration, not only locally but also at a regional scale.

Individual trees and tree compositions provide a wide range of cultural ecosystem services, including playing a key role in defining urban character. In Hungary, urban landscape protection tools have recently been expanded, bringing the topic into the spotlight. However, the significance of natural elements (and particularly trees) in relation to the urban landscape is still under-researched. In this paper, using a novel methodology, the character-forming significance of trees and tree-compositional elements of historic gardens in Hungary that define the urban character is analysed and evaluated. The urban landscape protection tools that establish the current recognition of green elements within the urban landscape are also analysed. In addition, the spatial situations and characteristics making certain trees in historic gardens defining character elements within Hungarian settlements are studied. Reasons behind the lack of significant tree features in certain historic gardens, as well as the external and internal characteristics of tree elements that determine their visual impact have been categorised. The results reveal that visually important trees, while diverse, show distinct trends in terms of visibility and are subject to constant change. The results imply that a paradigm shift is necessary to maintain, design and regulate green infrastructure in relation to visually important trees.

In 2014 a catastrophic ice storm occurred in the forests of Börzsöny Mts., Hungary. In this study we analyzed the potential of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, complemented, and compared with optical imagery, in mapping this event. Great emphasis was put on reference data: three types of field-based reference datasets were used and the damaged patches were delineated manually based on the visual interpretation of pre- and post-event orthophotos. Four classifications with different set-ups were carried out by applying the eXtreme Gradient Boosting method. Combinations of radar backscatter coefficients, polarimetric descriptors, interferometric coherence, and optical data variables were tested. All classifications were suitable for identifying uprooted trees properly (1–11% underestimation), but none of them could detect crown loss accurately (55–58% overestimation), based on the validation of the most damaged area. Proper differentiation of healthy forests with various levels of canopy closure in the reference data seems crucial for accurate canopy loss estimation. In the case of methods using only Sentinel-1 imagery, interferometric coherence together with polarimetric descriptors provided the best results (OA: 65.7%). This setup can be useful for immediate uproot damage detection for planning salvage logging if a natural disturbance happens outside the vegetation period.

Abstract Background The aims of this study were to evaluate whether HPV infection has a prognostic role in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent oncological treatment and also to compare the heat shock proteins (Hsp) 90, 27 and 16.2 and growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor (GHRH-R) expression patterns of the pre-treatment tumor biopsies with the HPV status and with the oncological response. Methods Pre-treatment tumor biopsies of 74 patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were processed retrospectively. The presence of HPV was detected by chromogenic in situ hybridization. Hsp and GHRH-R expressions were determined using immunohistochemistry. Following neoadjuvant or definitive radiochemotherapy, the patients were restaged according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors. The correlation between the HPV status, response to treatment and Hsp and GHRH-R expressions were evaluated. Results Fourteen (19%) patients were HPV-positive. These patients were more likely to respond poorly to multimodal therapy (71.4% were non-responders vs. 28.6% responders) and had shorter survival compared to HPV-negative patients (mean survival of 8 months vs. 11 months), although the difference was not significant. A significantly higher number of HPV-positive patients expressed Hsp 90 and 16.2 at high levels (93 and 79%, respectively) than at low levels (Chi-Square p = 0.019 and p = 0.031). Higher levels of Hsp expressions were associated with poorer response to therapy and worse overall survival. No correlation was found between GHRH-R expression and the HPV status, nor between GHRH-R expression and the treatment response of the examined samples. Conclusions We found that HPV infection was associated with poor response to oncological treatment and decreased overall survival, and therefore proved to be a negative prognostic factor in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. There was a linear correlation between levels of Hsp 90 and 16.2 expression and HPV positivity.

In this study, acoustic emission (AE) measurements on polycrystalline tin as a function of temperature at different driving rates under compression were carried out. It is shown that there is a definite difference between the acoustic emission characteristics belonging to twinning (low temperatures) as well as to dislocation slip (high temperatures). The stress averaged values of the exponents of the energy probability density functions decreased from ε = 1.45 ± 0.05 (−60 °C) to ε = 1.20 ± 0.15 (50 °C) at a driving rate of ε=0.15 s−1, and the total acoustic energy decreased by three orders of magnitude with increasing temperature. In addition, the exponent γ in the scaling relation SAE~DAEγ (SAE is the area and DAE is the duration) also shows similar temperature dependence (changing from γ = 1.78 ± 0.08 to γ = 1.35 ± 0.05), illustrating that the avalanche statistics belong to two different microscopic deformation mechanisms. The power law scaling relations were also analyzed, taking into account that the detected signal is always the convolution of the source signal and the transfer function of the system. It was obtained that approximate values of the power exponents can be obtained from the parts of the above functions, belonging to large values of parameters. At short duration times, the attenuation effect of the AE detection system dominates the time dependence, from which the characteristic attenuation time, τa, was determined as τa ≅ 70 μs.

BANKRUPTCY ,MERGERS & acquisitions ,MARKET share ,TRANSACTION cost theory of the firm ,VALUE creation - Abstract
Merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions are often associated with increasing market share, improved operational efficiency and the ability to create value. Nevertheless, many studies have presented the drawbacks of M&A transactions, including an increase in the risk of bankruptcy. A significant number of companies go bankrupt in Hungary every year, even in non-recession periods. The goal of our analysis is to examine how the risks of companies, especially their bankruptcy risks, were affected by acquisitions in Hungary between 2008 and 2017. The results of our study with a focus on Hungarian companies confirm the research published in the international literature, according to which M&A transactions are unsuccessful in many cases, and the transactions are often followed by adverse effects. Our research results may change the perspectives associated with the allegedly well-known benefits and expectations of acquisitions. Based on our research, we recommend that companies planning to merge or acquire should also consider the possible failure of such transactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

heritage protection ,historic gardens ,visibility ,tree compositions - Abstract

- Abstract
A kutatásunk fókuszában amerikai multinacionális technológiai cégek osztalékfizetési politikáinak elemzése áll.

Measurements have been carried out to compare stress-induced martensite stabilization aged (SIM-aged) and as grown shape memory Ni53Mn25Ga22 single crystals with the means of simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and acoustic emission (AE). Contrary to expectations, the position of the hysteresis practically did not change, whilst the width of the hysteresis increased, and the forward and reverse transitions became sharper in the SIM-aged sample. The energy distributions of acoustic hits showed regular power law behaviour and the energy exponents were slightly different for heating and cooling; this asymmetry had different signs for the SIM-aged and as grown samples. During heating, in accordance with the sharper transitions observed in the DSC runs, two well-marked jumps could be seen on the plot of cumulative number of the acoustic emission events. Therefore, these were attributed to high sudden jumps in the phase transition during heating observed in the DSC. The effect of the SIM-aging on the transformation entropy was also investigated and it was found that it was about 36% less in the case of the SIM-aged sample.

Simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry, DSC, and acoustic emission, AE, measurements were carried out for single crystals of quenched and stress-induced martensite stabilized (SIM-aged) shape memory Ni51Fe18Ga27Co4 alloy. The transformation temperatures were shifted to higher values, the forward (from austenite to martensite) and reverse transitions became sharper and the width of the hysteresis increased in the SIM-aged sample. The energy distributions of acoustic hits showed similar behaviour to those of the quenched sample and the energy exponents, characterizing the power law behaviour, were also similar. For SIM-aged alloys at heating, in accordance with the sharper (burst-like) transition observed in the DSC run, few high-energy solitary hits were observed, and these hits did not fit to the energy distribution function fitted for smaller energies. Thus, these high-energy events were attributed to high sudden jumps in the phase transition during heating. The effect of long-range order (by applying a heat treatment at 573 K for 6 h to transform the B2 austenite to ordered L21 structure) and the SIM-aging on the transformation entropy was also investigated by DSC. It was found that the entropy was about 36% smaller after SIM-aging of the quenched sample and it was practically unchanged after austenite stabilization.

THE AIMS OF THE PAPER We associate M&A transactions with increasing market share, improved operational efficiency, and the ability to create value, but several foreign studies have shown the failure of M&A transactions, including an increase in the risk of bankruptcy. Every year, a significant number of companies go bankrupt in Hungary, in the non-recession period, as well. The aim of our primary analysis is to examine, how the acquisitions made in Hungary between 2008 and 2016 affected the riskiness of companies, especially regard to their bankruptcy risk. Our secondary goal is connected to the identification of the change accompanied by the financial indicators. METHODOLOGY In our work, we examine the cases implemented in the commercial sector by companies subject to licensing by the Hungarian Competition Authority, ie with annual net sales of more than HUF 500 million. Apart from the “outlier” cases, we examine all the cases. The impact of the acquisition is analyzed with 3 bankruptcy models. MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS Regarding the non-financial characteristics of the transactions, we found that acquisitions typically take place between competitors, which presupposes strong market competition. This is also supported by the geographical position of the companies: in addition to Budapest, the examined transactions were characterized by companies based in the Great Plain. According to our financial results, the acquisition did not result in any efficiency gains in a significant number of companies, and there was no decrease in the risk of bankruptcy for the examined cases. RECOMMENDATIONS The results of our research carried out in Hungarian companies confirm the research published in the international literature, according to which M&A transactions fail in large numbers, adverse effects occur after the transaction: The results of our work may overshadow the well-known benefits and expectations of acquisitions. Based on all this, we recommend the companies planning mergers and acquisitions to take the possible failure of the acquisition into consideration.

[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Structural changes (martensitic transformation, rearrangements of martensitic variants) in shape memory alloys have an intermittent character that is accompanied by the emission of different (thermal, acoustic, and magnetic) noises, which are fingerprints of the driven criticality, resulting in a damped power-law behaviour. We will illustrate what kinds of important information can be obtained on the structural changes in shape memory alloys. It was established that the power exponents of distributions of acoustic emission (AE) parameters (energy, amplitude, etc.), belonging to martensitic transformations, show quite a universal character and depend only on the symmetry of the martensite. However, we have shown that the asymmetry of the transformation (the exponents are different for the forward and reverse transformations) results in as large differences as those due to the martensite symmetry. We will also demonstrate how the recently introduced AE clustering method can help to identify the different contributions responsible for the asymmetry. The usefulness of the investigations of time correlations between the subsequent events and correlations between acoustic and magnetic noise events in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys will be demonstrated too. Finally, examples of acoustic and magnetic emissions during variant rearrangements (superplastic or superelastic behaviour) in the martensitic state will be described.

Prompt-gamma activation analysis (PGAA) is a useful method to determine the elemental composition of bulky samples, where non-destructivity, representativity, and high metrological quality are of great importance. Voluminous samples significantly attenuate both the exciting neutron beam and the emerging gamma radiation within the sample. We have developed a generally applicable correction for the neutron self-shielding and gamma-ray self-absorption effect for large and irregularly shaped samples, based on digital geometry data and Monte Carlo simulations. The numerical correction gives results that agree well with those from destructive sampling.

The case-study overviews the possible reduction for the methane gas emission in order to avoid of the more global warming effects and climate change caused by the human activity at latest decades. To collect international data base is for analysing and valuing methane gas emission based on the different country-groups, emphasizing responsibility of developing countries and highly developed countries for gas emission, also the methane emission based is on the economic sectors. China and India have share 8% of China and 2% of India respectively of cumulative CO2 emissions over the period 1900-2005, the US and the EU are responsible for more than half of emissions. Based on the estimation the global gas emissions of methane in the whole world has increased by 37% for period of 1990- 2030, as four decades, and this was 0,92% annual rate growth, while the OECD has increased the methane emission by 8,5% for this period, which means 0,21% growth rate annually. Scenario in developing countries for 2013-2020 the methane gas emission reduction could have been 8200 Mt of CO2e (Equivalent) and less than 10 US dollar per ton in more cost financing. Highly developed and developing economies (last one their methane emission share 56% in 1990, estimated 66,8% in 2030) increase their economic growth by mostly fossil energy resulted in increasing also methane gas emissions. The methane gas emission can be solved by those results-based-finance forms relevant to Kyoto Protocol, which can extend in the world by financial institutions.
