Many physicians believe illustrations can be helpful in patient encounters, but fail to create such drawings due to a perceived lack of artistic ability. Digital drawing platforms, however, have the ability to compensate for the lack of artistic skills. Our study sought to evaluate how digital drawing instruction would impact the likelihood of medical students to utilise illustrations in future patient encounters. 'Draw Your Way Through Medicine' was an elective course, offered at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2020. The course instructed students how to create digital drawings using Procreate and how to depict specific surgical procedures. Students completed pre-and post-course surveys, which were analysed using paired t-tests. Thirty-six students enrolled in the course, of which 27 completed the pre-course survey and 21 completed both pre-and post-course surveys. Students' comfort level with drawing improved somewhat (3.0 to 3.5

Invasive species are a key driver of the global biodiversity crisis, but the drivers of invasiveness, including the role of pathogens, remain debated. We investigated the genomic basis of invasiveness in Ambrosia artemisiifolia (common ragweed), introduced to Europe in the late 19th century, by resequencing 655 ragweed genomes, including 308 herbarium specimens collected up to 190 years ago. In invasive European populations, we found selection signatures in defense genes and lower prevalence of disease-inducing plant pathogens. Together with temporal changes in population structure associated with introgression from closely related Ambrosia species, escape from specific microbial enemies likely favored the plant’s remarkable success as an invasive species.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) continues to have high morbidity and mortality. Improving ICH outcomes likely requires rapid removal of blood from the parenchyma and restraining edema formation while also limiting further neuronal damage due to the surgical intervention. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) approaches promise to provide these benefits and have become alluring options for management of ICH. This review describes six MIS techniques for ICH evacuation including craniopuncture, stereotactic aspiration with thrombolysis, endoport-mediated evacuation, endoscope-assisted evacuation, adjunctive aspiration devices, and the surgiscope. The efficacy of each modality is discussed based on current literature. The largest clinical trials have yet to demonstrate definitive effects of MIS intervention on mortality and functional outcomes for ICH. Thus, there is a significant need for further innovation for ICH treatment. Multiple ongoing trials promise to better clarify the potential of the newer, non-thrombolytic MIS techniques.

Evaluate efficacy of infliximab with response-driven dosing in patients with active RA.Patients (n = 203) with active RA despite methotrexate + etanercept/adalimumab, participated in this active-infliximab-switch study. Infliximab 3 mg/kg was infused at Weeks 0, 2, 6, 14, and 22 with escalation to 5 or 7 mg/kg depending on EULAR response at Weeks 14 and 22. The primary endpoint was EULAR response at Week 10. Safety was assessed through Week 30. Infliximab levels and antibodies to infliximab (ATI) were measured at Weeks 0, 6, 14, and 26.NCT 00714493, EudraCT 2007-003288-36.Of 197 evaluable patients, 120/77 previously received etanercept/adalimumab. Baseline mean (SD) swollen and tender joint counts were 17.3 (10.54) and 30.2 (16.89), respectively; mean DAS28-ESR was 6.19 (0.981). At Week 10, 98 (49.7%; 95% CI: 42.6%, 56.9%) patients achieved EULAR response, with a significantly improved DAS28-ESR score (mean [SD] change -1.1 [1.15]; p 0.001). EULAR response was achieved by 41.7%/62.3% of patients previously receiving etanercept/adalimumab (p = 0.006). At Week 26, 51.8% (95% CI: 44.6%, 58.9%) of patients achieved or maintained EULAR response. Infliximab dose was escalated in 100 patients, 52% of whom achieved EULAR response at Week 26. Median serum concentration levels at Week 26 showed that dose escalation helped EULAR non-responders achieve levels similar to or higher than the levels seen in responders. ATI were associated with lower serum concentrations of infliximab, consistent with lower efficacy rates among ATI-positive patients.Infliximab, in treat-to-target settings with individual dose escalation, demonstrated significant efficacy at Weeks 10 and 26 in patients switched to infliximab after inadequate response to etanercept/adalimumab. The observed efficacy indicated that the switch to infliximab and ability to increase dose in a targeted fashion were beneficial.Given the relatively short duration of study follow-up, these safety findings require confirmation in a longer-term study.

Objective: Compare effectiveness of celecoxib versus diclofenac plus omeprazole in improving arthritis signs and symptoms in patients at high gastrointestinal (GI) risk who were enrolled in the CONDOR (Celecoxib vs Omeprazole and Diclofenac in Patients With Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis) trial. Methods: CONDOR was a 6-month, prospective, double-blind, triple-dummy, parallel-group, randomized, multicenter trial comparing celecoxib 200 mg twice daily versus diclofenac slow release (SR) 75 mg twice daily plus omeprazole 20 mg daily. Patients were Helicobacter pylori negative, had osteoarthritis (OA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA), were aged ≥60 years, were with or without a history of gastroduodenal ulceration, or were ≥18 years with previous gastroduodenal ulceration. Patients’ Global Assessment of Arthritis was determined at each study visit. Results: A total of 4484 patients were randomized to treatment (2238 celecoxib, 2246 diclofenac SR) and included in the intention-to-treat analyses. Least squares mean (LSM) (standard error [SE]) for Patients’ Global Assessment of Arthritis was 3.219 (0.017) and 3.221 (0.017) at baseline for celecoxib and diclofenac SR (p=0.90). Improvement in both groups was similar in months 2, 4, and 6; at month 1 the LSM (SE) was 2.647 (0.017) and 2.586 (0.017) for celecoxib and diclofenac (p=0.0025). LSM difference (SE) from baseline to final visit demonstrated an improvement of 0.75 (0.02) in celecoxib-treated patients and 0.77 (0.02) in diclofenac SR-treated patients (p=0.42). Conclusions: Celecoxib and diclofenac plus omeprazole were shown to have similar efficacy in patients with OA and/or RA at increased GI risk who were enrolled in the CONDOR trial. Wir stellen ein mannliches Fruhgeborenes mit postnataler Adaptationsstorung und sekundarem Anstieg der Entzundungsparameter im Serum vor, bei dem im Liquor blastenartige Zellnester auffallig waren, die morphologisch Neuroblastom-, Medulloblastom- oder Lymphomzellen ahnelten. Zudem wurden Sidero- und Erythrophagen als Hinweis auf eine abgelaufene Hamorrhagie mit beginnender Abraumreaktion gesehen. Ein Erreger konnte nicht nachgewiesen werden. Im Verlauf normalisierten sich die Befunde, sodass der Patient in gutem Allgemeinzustand entlassen wurde. Poststationare Kontrollen zeigten eine regelrechte altersentsprechende Entwicklung. Die umfangreiche Diagnostik u. a. zum Ausschluss eines Neuroblastoms blieb unauffallig. In der Literatur fanden wir einzelne hamatopathologische Fallberichte, die blastenartige Zellnester im Liquor fruh- und z. T. auch reifgeborener Kinder beschreiben, die nur schwierig von Zellen maligner Genese zu differenzieren sind. Diese Zellen halt man mittlerweile fur germinale Matrixzellen. Bei nachgewiesenen blastenartigen Zellverbanden im Liquor Neugeborener sollten differenzialdiagnostisch germinale Matrixzellen in Betracht gezogen werden, insbesondere wenn Hinweise fur eine Hamorrhagie, Subarachnoidalblutung oder einen Hydrozephalus vorliegen.

Females of the rove beetle genus Paederus (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) accumulate large amounts of the defensive compound pederin produced by an endosymbiotic bacterium. Pederin is transferred in the eggs, while the endosymbionts are transmitted via the egg shell. In all three species analyzed (P. melanurus, P. riparius, and P. sabaeus), descendants of aposymbiotic matrilines (lacking both endosymbionts and biosynthetic capabilities) acquire biosynthetic capability by the ingestion of eggs with endosymbionts during larval development. Successful colonization by endosymbionts depends on the number of eggs consumed and the age of the feeding larvae. During the adult stage, however, the females cannot acquire biosynthetic capabilities. Adult females are able to sequester pederin from eggs eaten, and they transfer the substance into their own eggs. Lack of intrinsic biosynthesis after ingestion of endosymbionts indicates that these are not biosynthetically active within the gut and have to reach an unknown internal location before completion of metamorphosis. These results are discussed with regard to the benefit of intraspecific cannibalism.

Endosymbiotic bacteria implicated in pederin production of Paederus (+)-females (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) can be transmitted horizontally within and less frequently among the three species analyzed (P. melanurus, P. riparius, P. sabaeus). The 16S rDNA isolated from (+)-females reveals closely related bacterial sequences in the three species as well as in Paederus fuscipes and Paederidus ruficollis. This confirms the association of the undescribed endosymbiont and pederin biosynthesis in 5 of the 13 species that have been shown to contain the substance. In spite of the high sequence identities (> 99.5%), which suggest one species of endosymbiont, some of the heterospecific hosts were incompatible. This indicates adaptation and specific preferences of the endosymbiont for their natural host.

Biosynthesis of the defensive compound pederin by females in the genus Paederus appears to be associated with endosymbiotic microorganisms. In P. melanurus, which could be maintained in the laboratory for several generations, horizontal transmission occurs by ingestion of eggs inoculated with the specific endosymbionts. They are responsible for females’ pederin polymorphism. Heating or freezing eliminated or markedly reduced transmission. This indicates bacteria that are unable to produce endospores and lacking a cell wall. Influences other than pederin biosynthesis could not be observed.

Biosynthesis of the unique defensive compound pederin is confined to female rove beetles of the genus Paederus (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae). These (+)-females endow their eggs with toxin whereas (-)-females, which occur both naturally and in laboratory reared specimens, do not. The latter are aposymbionts lacking biosynthetic capabilities because of endosymbiotic deficiency. They can, however, be induced to accumulate pederin if fed with (+)-eggs during larval development. The endosymbionts can thus be transmitted by ingestion of (+)-Eggs. (+)-eggs treated with benzylpenicillin, erythromycin, oxytetracycline or streptomycin show that the induction of pederin accumulation depends on the antibiotic's spectrum of efficaciousness, its dosage and duration of the treatment. Certain bacteria, probably belonging to the gram-negative type, must be transmitted to produce (+)-females.

In den letzten 50 Jahren wurden Rollschutze sehr haufig in Schiffsschleusen als Verschlusse zum Fullen und Entleeren der Schleusenkammern eingesetzt. Die Schutze sind i. d. R. mit vier Hauptlaufrollen, zwei bis vier Gegen- und zwei bis vier Seitenfuhrungsrollen ausgerustet. Diese Vielzahl der Fuhrungselemente und ihre Feingliedrigkeit haben sich im rauhen Betrieb als nicht ausreichend robust herausgestellt. Es bestehen deshalb Bestrebungen, Rollschutze durch Gleitschutze zu ersetzen. Die Erneuerung der Bremer Wasserschleuse wurde dazu genutzt, an den Umlaufen des Unterhauptes auf der einen Seite ein Rollschutz, auf der anderen Seite ein Gleitschutz einzubauen. Uber die vergleichende Erprobung und die dabei vorgenommenen Versuche wird berichtet.

In Paederus riparius, (+) females able to biosynthesize the unique hemolymph toxin pederin and (-) females lacking this ability co-occur in natural populations. Larvae descended from both types of females were reared in the laboratory and the imagoes were crossed in order to get information about a possible genetic basis of this polymorphism. The daughters of (+) mothers become (+) females or (-) females, while the progeny of (-) mothers comprises only (-) females. This suggests a matrilineal trait because pederin biosynthesis cannot be inherited from the father. The rather stable proportion of nearly 90% (+) females in collected females is not maintained, however, when the beetles are reared in the laboratory. This observation is discussed with regard to artificial rearing conditions, where individuals are kept separate and cannot prey on conspecifics.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in the elderly population. The prevalence is reported to be 1.2-1.4% in several population-based epidemiological studies. Currently 25-30 million people worldwide are blind due to AMD. With the aging world population it is bound to increase significantly, and could become a significant public health problem in next two decades, with serious socio-economic implications. Several strategies are today available to treat the wet form of AMD, which is responsible for significant visual loss. These were until recently confined to laser photocoagulation, and subretinal surgery, but today two other modalities, namely, radiation and photodynamic therapy, are available. These treatment modalities however, are aimed at preservation of vision only, and not at reversing the process of the disease. Further research on antiangiogenic drugs and gene therapy could significantly help AMD patients.

Paederus riparius (Coleoptera:Staphylinidae) females are polymorphic with regard to their ability to synthesize the hemolymph toxin pederin, a character confined to that sex: (+)-females endow their eggs with pederin whereas (-)-females lay eggs devoid of the substance. When reared without access to conspecifics, (+)-females can only be obtained from (+)-mothers. Ingestion of (+)-eggs during larval development, however, enables the offspring of (-)-females to also become (+)-females. This is only the case if untreated (+)-eggs are eaten, while sterilized (+)-eggs do not alter larval fate as (-)-females. The character can thus be transferred to unrelated specimens. These experiments suggest that microorganisms might be involved in the biosynthesis of this unusual compound. Pederin appears to be the first defensive substance in insects traceable to endosymbionts.

Pederin analyses of single Paederus riparius specimens reared from the egg and kept for prolonged periods of time show that only the females are able to biosynthesize the substance. Preimaginal stages efficiently store pederin transferred by the females into their eggs and the males’ pederin content decreases slowly over time. Only males with access to eggs con­ taining the substance moderately increase their pederin load. The females begin to accumu­ late the toxin a few weeks after imaginal eclosion and build up reserves for the egg laying period within 60 days. This is discussed with regard to the life cycle of P. riparius. During reproduction, when the females loose pederin due to maternal transfer, they must replenish their pederin reserves. This biosynthesis is not reflected in the amount found per individual.

An autofocus circuit, based on measurement of the high spatial frequency image components, was designed for automated microscopic scanning of biological specimens. By careful consideration of the system transfer function, elimination of video end-of-line filter artifacts, correction for illumination instability, and incorporation of autogain, the focus measurement circuit attained the sensitivity and dynamic range necessary for robust operation even at the extremes of biological specimen detail encountered in exhaustive raster scans of thousands of fields. This new circuit exhibited a 25-fold improvement in dynamic range over a previous analog implementation, matched real-time digital performance at an order of magnitude lower cost, resulted in autofocus precision of 56 nm (or 10-fold better than the depth of field of the objective) in scanning experiments comprising over 10 000 microscope fields, and tracked focus at scanning speeds of up to 3.45 fields/s. Focus was correctly maintained in these scanning experiments without additional compensation for low-detail images. This circuit makes possible the widespread inclusion of high-performance autofocus as a low cost option in video microscopy systems.

We have constructed an optically transparent, memoryless 2:1 statistical TDM packet multiplexor for constant packet-length input. This multiplexor is the fundamental building block in a class of Cascaded Optical Delay (COD) multiplexors intended for wide-area terabit networks. The multiplexor does not require slot-aligned traffic. This multiplexor can be cascaded to build multiplexors with improved packet loss rate. In this article we present the experimental packet loss rate of the memoryless multiplexor as well as the calculated packet loss rate of larger, buffered COD multiplexors. Furthermore, we outline an optical loss compensation scheme for buffered COD multiplexors.

The agricultural fungicide N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)succinimide (NDPS) is nephrotoxic in rats. Previous studies have suggested that oxidative hepatic biotransformation is required for the induction of kidney damage. The experiments described in this paper were designed to further investigate the relationship between NDPS metabolism and nephrotoxicity using various modulators of cytochrome P450 activity. Male Fischer 344 rats were pretreated with the P450 inducers Aroclor 1254 (ARO), isoniazid (INH), 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC), and phenobarbital (PB), or the P450 inhibitor 1-aminobenzotriazole (ABT). Control animals received vehicle only. NDPS metabolism was investigated using hepatocytes isolated from the various treatment groups. Separate experiments were also conducted to evaluate the effects of these pretreatments on NDPS-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. PB and ARO enhanced formation of the known nephrotoxic NDPS metabolites, N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-hydroxysuccinimide, N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-hydroxysuccinamic acid, and N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-3-hydroxysuccinamic acid, by the hepatocytes. In contrast, ABT inhibited formation of the nephrotoxic metabolites, whereas INH and 3-MC did not alter NDPS biotransformation. NDPS-induced renal damage was potentiated by pretreating the rats with PB or ARO and was attenuated by ABT. Compared with control animals, toxicity was unaffected by INH or 3-MC pretreatments. Thus, there was a correlation between pretreatments that induce P450-mediated NDPS metabolism and the effects that these compounds have on NDPS-induced nephrotoxicity. The data indicate that specific P450 isozymes metabolize NDPS to its hydroxylated products and suggest that these metabolites mediate the nephrotoxicity induced by NDPS.

This study investigates the effects of pederin, a hemolymph toxin that is accumulated in the eggs of most Paederus females, on potential arthropod predators of the offspring of P. fuscipes and P. riparius. Insects generally do not respond to pederin present in the prey. Paederus larvae are sufficiently agile to escape from these predators by running away, and the eggs are hidden by the females. Unlike insects, (wolf) spiders are deterred by prey with pederin. They turn away from larvae they have already captured and exhibit cleansing behavior. Larvae containing pederin survive the attacks of spiders without damage, whereas larvae descended from females that do not transfer pederin into their eggs are often killed and eaten. In the case of sudden attacks by spiders, the larvae have no chance of escape. Their survival thus depends on chemical defense. These investigations show for the first time why pederin might be of considerable importance for Paederus in the field.

Pederin, a hemolymph toxin found in the rove beetle genusPaederus, is quantified in individual specimens ofP. fuscipes andP. riparius. Whereas males always contain only small quantities of the toxin (0.1-1.5 µg), females are not so restricted (0.2-20.5 µg) and in most cases possess roughly 10-fold that in males. There are, however, females containing as little pederin as the males, and so two clearly separate groups of females can be discerned. These two groups hint at two types of females defined by the eggs they lay. About 85% of the females, i.e., those containing much of the substance, transfer pederin into every egg and thus are denoted (+)-females. The remaining 15%, the (-)-females, contain at best small amounts of the toxin, which is transferred in minute quantities into the first eggs while the subsequent ones lack pederin. With respect to the pederin content of their eggs, there is no overlap between these two types of females. If fed with pederin, (-)-females can transfer it into the eggs like (+)-females. After hatching the larvae store pederin when present. Larvae are not able to biosynthesize the toxin on their own, but storage of that received in the egg is very efficient, and the difference between larvae with and without pederin is preserved until imaginal eclosion. In (+)-females, pederin increases, probably reflecting a biosynthetic capacity, but in males and presumptive (-)-females the amount of pederin never exceeds the quantity transferred by parental (+)-females. Consequently, males and (-)-females probably are unable to biosynthesize pederin. This polymorphism of females may have a genetic basis. Individuals of all stages nevertheless sequester pederin if it is supplied with the diet.

The agricultural fungicide N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)succinimide (NDPS) produces kidney damage in rats. Although many NDPS analogues have been screened as possible nephrotoxicants, the one-carbon homologue, N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)glutarimide (NDPG), has not been evaluated. This study examined the nephrotoxic potential of NDPG and a putative metabolite, N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)glutaramic acid (NDPGA). Male Fischer 344 rats (N = 3-4 per group) were administered a single i.p. injection in corn oil of NDPG or NDPGA (0.4 or 1.0 mmol/kg), NDPS (0.4 mmol/kg), or corn oil alone. Renal function was monitored for 48 h. In contrast to NDPS, NDPG and NDPGA did not significantly alter renal function or kidney morphology when compared to corn oil-treated controls. These experiments show that replacement of the succinimide ring in NDPS with a glutarimide ring abolishes toxicity.

To compare the safety and efficacy of celecoxib versus diclofenac slow release (SR) plus omeprazole in elderly arthritis patients.Patients aged≥65 years, with osteoarthritis and/or rheumatoid arthritis, at high gastrointestinal (GI) risk who participated in the CONDOR trial (Celecoxib vs. Omeprazole and Diclofenac in Patients With Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis) were included in this subanalysis. CONDOR was a 6-month prospective, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, multicenter, international study comparing treatment with celecoxib 200 mg twice daily (BID) versus diclofenac SR 75 mg BID plus omeprazole 20 mg daily.The primary end point was a composite of Clinically Significant Upper and Lower GI Events adjudicated by an independent blinded expert committee. Efficacy was determined by the Patient's Global Assessment of Arthritis.A total of 2446 patients aged≥65 years were included in the intent-to-treat (ITT) population (n=1219 celecoxib; n=1227 diclofenac). Eight patients in the celecoxib group and 52 in the diclofenac group were adjudicated as having Clinically Significant Upper and Lower GI events (adjusted odds ratio: 6.27; p0.0001). Clinically significant reductions in hemoglobin (≥2 g/dL) and/or hematocrit (≥10%) were observed in 23 patients in the celecoxib group and in 76 in the diclofenac group (relative risk: 3.22 [95% confidence interval: 2.04-5.07]; p0.0001). Incidence of moderate-to-severe abdominal symptoms and discontinuation of treatment due to GI adverse events (AEs) were lower in the celecoxib group. The Patient's Global Assessment of Arthritis score least squares mean change from baseline to final visit and percentage of patients rating treatment efficacy as good/very good at baseline and final visit were similar in both groups.The dose of celecoxib used is consistent with the European label for the management of osteoarthritis and may not reflect what is commonly prescribed in current clinical practice in the United States. The data were obtained in a clinical trial setting where patients were enrolled based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria; as such, the patients may not be broadly representative of the patient population in a general practice setting.Efficacy was comparable in the two treatment groups. There were fewer endpoints as well as fewer GI AEs reported in patients treated with celecoxib compared with diclofenac. These data may help physicians in their treatment decisions for elderly patients with arthritis.

Glandular structures at the sternites of 31 species of Paederinae (Coleoptera : Staphylinidae) are described in detail for the first time. A median gland of unknown biological significance is situated at the front margin of the 4th sternite in Paederus and Paederidus (Paederus s.l.). A gland tissue at the posterior border of the antecosta opens into a reservoir situated between the antecosta and the intersegmental membrane. Each of the numerous glandular units obviously consist of 2 secretory cells that are drained by a tubule. They are thus related to dermal glands. Two types of pores, single pores and pore plates, are dispersed over the body, but are aggregated in the vicinity of the aperture of the reservoir. In Rugilus, 2 hitherto unknown glands of the same shape are located at the front margins of sternites 4 and 5. In contrast to the glands of Paederus s.l., there are big pores under the gland tissue and the opening area lies in a pit. One further species, Stilicosoma rufipes, was recently classified in the genus Rugilus, but does not have any glands, and therefore the genus Stilicosoma Casey, which was once named for S. rufipes, is re-established. Ochthephilum fracticorne does not have a reservoir, but otherwise combines features of both the glands of Paederus s. l. and those of Rugilus. This link points out the possible derivation of these glands from a common origin. All species of Lathrobiina have accumulations of tubules at the front margins of at least the 4th sternites, and thus represent a rather primitive stage in the development of the glands, while the lack of glandular peculiarities at the 4th sternites in Medonina is plesiomorphic. With respect to a special type of dermal tubules, the genera Medon, Pseudomedon, and Sunius are distinguished from Lithocharis, hence denoting a clear dividing line between the subtribes Medonina and Lithocharina. These features as well as the glands themselves, provide the basis for clarifying the largely unknown phylogeny of Paederinae.

Image-based autofocus determines focus directly from the specimen (as opposed to reflective surface positioning with an offset), but sequential acquisition of a stack of images to measure resolution/sharpness and find best focus is slower than reflective positioning. Simultaneous imaging of multiple focal planes, which is also useful for 3D imaging of live cells, is faster but requires complicated optics. With color CCD cameras and white light sources commonly available, we asked if axial chromatic aberration can be utilized to acquire multiple focal planes simultaneously, and if it can be controlled through a range sufficient for practical use. For proof of concept, we theoretically and experimentally explored the focal differences between three narrow wavelength bands on a 3-chip color CCD camera with and without glass inserts of various thicknesses and dispersions. Ray tracing yielded changes in foci of 0.65–0.9 μm upon insertion of 12.5-mm thick glass samples for green (G, 522 nm) vs. blue (B, 462 nm) and green vs. red (G-R, 604 nm). On a microscope: (1) With no glass inserts, the differences in foci were 2.15 μm (G-B) and 0.43 μm (G-R); (2) With glass inserts, the maximum change in foci for G vs. B was 0.44 μm and for G vs. R was 0.26 μm; and (3) An 11.3 mm thick N-BK7 glass insert shifted the foci 0.9 μm (R), 0.6 μm (G), and 0.35 μm (B), such that the B and R foci were farther apart (2.1 μm vs. 1.7 μm) and the R and G foci were closer together (0.25 μm vs. 0.45 μm). The slopes of the differences in foci were dependent on thickness, index of refraction, and dispersion. The measured differences in foci are comparable to the axial steps of 0.1–0.24 μm commonly used for autofocus, and focal plane separation can be altered by inserting optical elements of various dispersions and thicknesses. By enabling acquisition of multiple, axially offset images simultaneously, chromatic aberration, normally an imaging pariah, creates a possible mechanism for efficient multiplanar imaging of multiple spectral bands from white light illumination. © 2009 International Society for Advancement of Cytometry

To compare the sutureless 23-gauge system with a standard 20-gauge system in pars plana vitrectomy.60 patients in two randomised groups were included in this prospective clinical trial. Pars plana vitrectomy with either 23- or 20-gauge instruments was performed. The main outcome measures were postoperative conjunctival injection and pain. Secondary outcome parameters were time of surgery, intraocular pressure, visual acuity and complications.Conjunctival injection (p = 0.0003) and postoperative pain (p = 0.01) were significantly reduced following 23-gauge vitrectomy compared with the 20-gauge procedure. Opening (p = 0.006) and closure times (p0.00001) were significantly shorter, and vitrectomy time (p = 0.001) significantly longer in the 23-gauge system compared with 20-gauge vitrectomy. However, retinal manipulation and overall surgery times did not differ significantly between both groups. The same applies for eye pressure, distance and reading acuity. Regarding complications, two choroidal haemorrhages and one flat serous choroidal detachment occurred in the 23-gauge group.The 23-gauge system for pars plana vitrectomy offers significantly higher patient comfort during the early postoperative period. Time of surgery is almost equal--a shorter time for wound closure is neutralised by a longer vitrectomy time in the 23-gauge group.

The design, fabrication and performance of an integrated optical R.F. spectrum analyzer is described. The device consists of an injection laser, the IO substrate and a photodiode array. It operates over a frequency band-width of 400 MHz centered at 600 MHz and with a complete frame time of 2 mu sec. An R. F. input signal dynamic range in excess of 20 dB has been measured.

The spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of an InGaAsP-InP Franz-Keldysh effect (FKE) waveguide modulator is studied. Low-biasing the FKE modulator is shown to enhance the SFDR by 22 dB with a 3-dB optical power penalty. Polarization-independent RF operation is also obtained with low bias. At 2 mA photocurrent, the simulated narrowband and broadband SFDR are, respectively, 127 dB and 104 dB in a 1-Hz bandwidth. The measured result projects a narrowband SFDR of 129 dB-Hz/sup 4/5/ at this photocurrent. >

In this paper, the fabrication, frequency response, and saturation characteristics of a waveguide pin photodiode made from double heterostructure InGaAs/InP materials are presented. The detector is designed for operation at optical wavelengths ranging from 1.3 to 1.5 /spl mu/m. The materials are grown using a low pressure, organo-metallic vapor phase epitaxial reactor. Due to the use of a vent-run manifold and growth interruption at the heterointerface, high quality detector material is obtained. >

Laser mode-locking is an effective modulation technique which can be used in fiberoptic link applications. In a semiconductor laser, active mode-locking can be achieved through the direct modulation of the laser at the cavity resonant frequency. If the modulation frequency is detuned from this condition, large optical intensity fluctuations can occur, which can cause a significant degradation in the noise figure of the laser, and consequently in the noise figure of the overall link. In this paper, we investigate the consequence of frequency detuning an actively mode-locked external-cavity semiconductor laser. We experimentally demonstrate the existence of chaos in a mode-locked laser upon frequency detuning. To our knowledge, chaotic instability in an actively mode-locked semiconductor laser has not been reported. >

Summary form only given. We have constructed a fast statistical time-division packet multiplexer (MLTX) based on the cascaded optical delay (GOD) architecture. The COD uses 2x2 lithium niobate photonic crossbar switches and lengths of fiber delay line to buffer contentious packets. The routing control of the COD is performed electronically on a packet-by-packet basis.

Simultaneous multi planar microscope imaging enables parallel computation of autofocus for high-sped image cytometry. Although image cytometry exhibits many potential advantages over flow cytometry, substantially slower speed has limited use to fewer applications. In commercial image cytometry instruments, long scanning times have typically been circumvented by identification of small areas of interest during high speed, low resolution scans for subsequent analysis at high resolution. This two-pass strategy of analyzing only a few cells at high resolution is a disadvantage and often cannot be used at all where dim fluorescence demands higher numerical aperture (NA) objectives. Continuous stage motion synchronized with line array or time-delay-and-integrate (TDI) CCD image acquisition is capable of increasing scan speed by an order of magnitude or more, but until recently lacked the autofocus required for higher resolution objectives where depth of field is about the thickness of a cell monolayer. Here we describe an improved design for simultaneous multi planar acquisition and on-the-fly autofocus. This new system replaces more complicated and less light efficient fiberoptic imaging bundles with beamsplitters and mirrors. This new image-splitting design also enables addition of magnification correction optics not easily added to the earlier fiberoptic version. The result is a simplified, high sensitivity, magnification-matched, parallel multi planar acquisition module containing an array of CCD sensors for high-speed focus tracking and 3D imaging.

In Paederus riparius, (+) females able to biosynthesize the unique hemolymph toxin pederin and (-) females lacking this ability co-occur in natural populations. Larvae descended from both types of females were reared in the laboratory and the imagoes were crossed in order to get information about a possible genetic basis of this polymorphism. The daughters of (+) mothers become (+) females or (-) females, while the progeny of (-) mothers comprises only (-) females. This suggests a matrilineal trait because pederin biosynthesis cannot be inherited from the father. The rather stable proportion of nearly 90% (+) females in collected females is not maintained, however, when the beetles are reared in the laboratory. This observation is discussed with regard to artificial rearing conditions, where individuals are kept separate and cannot prey on conspecifics.

Disposition of the nephrotoxicant N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)succinimide (NDPS) was compared with that of a nontoxic analog, N-(3, 5-difluorophenyl)succinimide (DFPS). Male Fischer 344 rats were administered 0.2 or 0.6 mmol/kg [14C]NDPS or [14C]DFPS (i.p. in corn oil). Plasma concentrations were determined from blood samples obtained through the carotid artery. Urine samples were analyzed for metabolite content by HPLC. Rats were sacrificed at 3 h (DFPS) or 6 h (NDPS) and tissue radiolabel content and covalent binding were determined. [14C]NDPS-derived plasma radioactivity levels were 6- to 21-fold higher and peaked later than those from [14C]DFPS. Six hours after dosing, NDPS was 40% eliminated in the urine compared with approximately 90% for DFPS. By 48 h, only 67% of the NDPS dose was eliminated in urine. In contrast, DFPS excretion was virtually complete within 24 h. NDPS underwent oxidative metabolism to a slightly greater extent than DFPS. Distribution of [14C]NDPS-derived radioactivity into the kidneys was 3- to 6-fold higher than that into the liver or heart, and was more extensive than with [14C]DFPS. NDPS also covalently bound to plasma, renal, and hepatic proteins to a greater extent than DFPS. In summary, NDPS achieves higher tissue and plasma concentrations, covalently binds to a greater extent, and is eliminated more slowly than DFPS. Differences in the lipid solubility of NDPS metabolites and DFPS metabolites may help explain these results. The overall greater tissue exposure of NDPS and its metabolites may contribute to differential toxicity of these analogs.

Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80) was used as an emulsifying agent for administering tri-n-butyltin chloride (TBTCl) to rats below, at and above the LD50 for the compound. Tween 80 greatly enhanced the toxicity of the organotin compound. The LD50 in the presence of Tween 80 (16% of the emulsion) is less than half of the LD50 when the TBTCl was administered in corn oil.

Electroabsorption of strained‐layer Inx Ga1−x As/GaAs superlattice structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs substrates was experimentally investigated. Its spectral characteristics were found to be similar to those of Franz–Keldysh electroabsorption of bulk semiconductor materials, and suggest that the widths of ground‐state electron and hole minibands might be larger than the maximum tilt of the potential well caused by an applied voltage. We attribute the electroabsorption of such superlattices to photon‐assisted tunneling between ground‐state electron and heavy hole minibands.

We have selected as a prototype application diagnostic medical imaging and visualization. We have developed several radiological visualization station we have developed and evaluated methods for the loss less compression of images and image-formate data over a lossy packet network. We have studied noise mechanisms in transparent photonic networks. We have demonstrated parallel-to-serial and serial-to-parallel conversion using spectral domain four-wave mixing with 150 fsec laser pulses reaching serial data rates of over 1 Tbit/sec. we have constructed and demonstrated a nonlinear optical processor based on three-wave mixing in nonlinear LBO crystals. We have employed the parallel-to-serial and serial-to-parallel processors for experimental demonstration of transmission of image information through an optical fiber channel. We have analyzed the secrecy capacity of a quantum cryptographic protocol for secret key generation and found that it primarily depends on estimates of information in eavesdropper's possession, and the expected fraction of inconclusive outcomes. We investigated experimentally a novel frequency division long distance interferometer for implementing quantum cryptographic protocol and found that signals are not affected by transmission over optical fiber, we have developed for the first time the rigorous definitions and the mathematical formalism for information leakage through possible eavesdropping on the quantum channel. We quantify effective defense frontiers against eavesdroppers attacks.

The agricultural fungicide N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)succinimide (NDPS) is nephrotoxic in rats. Previous studies have suggested that oxidative hepatic biotransformation is required for the induction of kidney damage. The experiments described in this paper were designed to further investigate the relationship between NDPS metabolism and nephrotoxicity using various modulators of cytochrome P450 activity. Male Fischer 344 rats were pretreated with the P450 inducers Aroclor 1254 (ARO), isoniazid (INH), 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC), and phenobarbital (PB), or the P450 inhibitor 1-aminobenzotriazole (ABT). Control animals received vehicle only. NDPS metabolism was investigated using hepatocytes isolated from the various treatment groups. Separate experiments were also conducted to evaluate the effects of these pretreatments on NDPS-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. PB and ARO enhanced formation of the known nephrotoxic NDPS metabolites, N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-hydroxysuccinimide, N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-hydroxysuccinamic acid, and N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-3-hydroxysuccinamic acid, by the hepatocytes. In contrast, ABT inhibited formation of the nephrotoxic metabolites, whereas INH and 3-MC did not alter NDPS biotransformation. NDPS-induced renal damage was potentiated by pretreating the rats with PB or ARO and was attenuated by ABT. Compared with control animals, toxicity was unaffected by INH or 3-MC pretreatments. Thus, there was a correlation between pretreatments that induce P450-mediated NDPS metabolism and the effects that these compounds have on NDPS-induced nephrotoxicity. The data indicate that specific P450 isozymes metabolize NDPS to its hydroxylated products and suggest that these metabolites mediate the nephrotoxicity induced by NDPS.

N-(3,5-Difluorophenyl)succinimide (DFPS) is a non-toxic analogue of the nephrotoxic fungicide N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl) succinimide (NDPS). Although NDPS must be metabolized to produce renal damage, the metabolic fate of DFPS is unknown. These studies were therefore designed to examine the nephrotoxic potential of putative DFPS metabolites and to determine if DFPS is metabolized differently from NDPS. Male Fischer-344 rats were administered (1.0 mmol/kg, i.p. in corn oil) DFPS, N-(3,5-difluorophenyl)succinamic acid (DFPSA), N-(3,5-di-fluorophenyl)-2-hydroxysuccinimide (DFHS), N-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-2- or -3-hydroxysuccinamic acids (2- and 3-DFHSA, respectively), N-(3,5-difluoro-4-hydroxyphenyl)succinimide (DFHPS), N-(3,5-difluoro-4-hydroxyphenyl succinamic acid (DFHPSA) or corn oil only (1.2 ml/kg). Although some of the compounds produced changes in renal function and histology, these alterations were not indicative of irreversible kidney damage. DFPSA, 2-DFHSA, 3-DFHSA and DFHPSA were detected in the urine of rats 3 h after administration of 0.2 mmol/kg [14C]DFPS. The same metabolites were produced by isolated rat hepatocytes, but not by renal proximal tubule cells. Formation of the oxidative metabolites in vitro was prevented by the cytochrome P450 inhibitor 1-aminobenzotriazole. It appears that DFPS undergoes hepatic biotransformation similar to NDPS and that some of its metabolites have reversible effects on renal proximal tubules.

Primary care physicians rely on specialists. Specialists are too expensive to be located at every clinical site requiring a practical means for specialists to help without requiring patients or specialists to travel for consultation. To address the challenge of providing primary care physician access to specialists, we are developing a clinical prototype system for the high-speed access and transfer of patient data and images within Radiology Departments, Medical Centers and Health Care Networks. The key components of the system are: a high-bandwidth network (100 Mbit/s upgradeable to ATM); an image server system with a 30-60 day patient image on-line archive (10 sec. recall) coupled with a long term archive; viewing consoles matching existing film display paradigms located within the medical center and clinics providing rapid access to patient data and diagnostic images for house staff (OR/ER/ICU); clinician access to the image archive on a consultation basis in office computers; and image review applications which closely follow the established paradigms used by clinicians. Using our system primary care physicians can rapidly review patient data locally obtaining additional consultation from tertiary sites while the patient is present. Clinics and outlying medical centers gain rapid access to specialists with physicians in different cities discussing patient diagnostic and management issues in a shared environment leading to instantaneous data analysis and diagnosis further reducing health care costs and enhancing patient care.

A four-layer asymmetric waveguide structure using a nonabsorbing 1.08 eV bandgap InGaAsP waveguiding layer has been studied for high saturation power, high speed waveguide photodiode operating at 1.32 micrometers wavelength. A peak photocurrent of 32 mA corresponding to an optical power of 76 mW has been obtained for 40 GHz waveguide photodiode.
