Purpose To analyze the relationship between body mass index change and bone age progression during gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist(GnRHa) treatment in girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty Methods: 65 girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty who are treated with GnRHa more than 2 years were retrospectively reviewed. Height, weight, Tanner stage, bone age were measured every 6 months from the start of treatment. The degree of obesity was evaluated using the body mass index (BMI) standard deviation score (SDS), and the relationship between the change in obesity and the progression of bone age was analyzed. Overweight was defined as a BMI greater than or equal to the 85th percentile. The chronological age at the start and the end of treatment was 7. 00±0. 00 years and 10.63±0.50 years in the overweight group (16 patients), and 6.86±0.35 years and 10.71±0.54 years in the other group (49 patients), respectively. Results There was no difference in bone age between the normal weight group and the overweight group at the start of treatment (9.85±0.57 years vs 10. 04±0.73 years, P=0.263). Bone age was higher in the overweight group, but after 1 year of treatment, 2 years of treatment, and at the end of treatment, the overweight group had a higher bone age than the normal weight group (10.47±0.56 years vs 10.87±0.57 years, P=0. 02; 11. 06±0.47 years vs 11.46±0.51 years, P=0. 004; 11.70±0.46 years vs 12. 01±0.52 years, P=0. 03). Bone age at the end of treatment was related to overweight at the start of treatment (r=0.265, P=0. 03) and the increase in BMI SDS from normal to overweight during treatment (r=0.285, P=0. 02). There were 11 children (17%) whose BMI SDS increased from normal to overweight during treatment, compared with the other patients, there was no difference in bone age during 2 years of treatment, but bone age at the end of treatment was higher (12. 09±0.60 years vs 11.71±0.47 years, P=0. 02), and the difference in bone age before and after treatment was also greater (2.31±0.68 years vs 1.79±0.52 years, P=0. 01). Linear regression analysis demonstrated that the increase in BMI SDS from normal to overweight during treatment had a positive correlation with bone age at the end of treatment (β=0.31, R2=0. 07, P=0. 03). Conclusion In girls with central precocious puberty, an increase in obesity from normal to overweight during GnRHa treatment does not affect bone age progression until 2 years from the start of treatment, but might be a risk factor for bone age progression at the end of treatment. Purpose: This study aimed to compare obesity indices with impedance analyzed body composition data, and to investigate the association between impedance analyzed body composition data and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Methods: 123 prepubertal children (49% girls 3-to-8- year-old, 51% boys 3-to-9-year-old) who are below or equal to body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) 85th percentile were retrospectively reviewed. Height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, serum lipid profiles, fasting plasma glucose and serum insulin were measured. Body fat percentile (BFP), fat-free mass (FFM) were measured by BIA and fat mass index (FMI), fat-free mass index (FFMI) were calculated. We investigated the relationship between metabolic syndrome indicators and body composition measured by BIA. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was defined as including more than or equal to three of the metabolic abnormalities according to the modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III. Results: The overall prevalence of MetS was found to be 15.4%(19/123). The prevalence of MetS, MetS indicators, and body composition measured by BIA were not significantly different between males and females. BMI z-score was positively correlated with BFP, FMI and FFMI (r=0.51, P=0.001; r=0.63, P=0.001; r=0.29, P=0.001, respectively), so was waist-to-height ratio (WHR) (r=0.57, P=0.001; r=0.70, P=0.001; r=0.33, P=0.001). Homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index was associated to BFP, FFM, FMI, and FFMI (r=0.305, P=0.003; r=0.359, P=0.001; r=0.331, P=0.001; r=0.24, P=0.018, respectively). Regression analysis showed chronological age (CA) and BMI z-score affect HOMA-IR (β=0.61, P=0.001; β=0.93, P=0.002, respectively) and CA was considered as a potential risk factor of MetS (Odd ratio of 3.09 and 95 % confidence interval of 1.25–7.65). Conclusion: BIA seems to be a good tools for measuring obesity but not a good tool for predicting complications of obesity in prepubertal children. Further study is needed on the risk factors for complications of obesity in prepubertal children.

We aimed to characterize the lineages of influenza B viruses obtained from clinical specimens during the 2007-2014 seasons in South Korea. RT-PCR for the partial hemagglutinin gene of influenza B virus was performed on laboratory-confirmed influenza B samples from the 2007-2008 season to 2013-2014 season. A phylogenetic tree was generated, and current influenza vaccine strains for the Northern Hemisphere were used as representative strains of Victoria and Yamagata lineages. A total of 571 influenza B virus sequences were analyzed. During the 2009-2010 season, most of the circulating influenza B viruses matched the vaccine strain; 91.0% (91/100) of viruses belonged to the Victoria lineage. In the 2007-2008, 2011-2012, and 2013-2014 seasons, co-circulation of each influenza B lineage was found with a match ratio to the vaccine strain of 53.2% (42/79), 40.9% (63/154), and 58.3% (134/230), respectively. Overall, 41.7% (238/571) of the circulating influenza B viruses belonged to the lineage mismatching the vaccine strain. During the seven influenza seasons, influenza B epidemics were substantial in four seasons in South Korea. Significant mismatches of the vaccine and lineage of the circulating influenza B viruses were found. The current trivalent influenza vaccine may not be fully suitable for effective protection against influenza B.

Purpose To determine the prevalence and clinical findings of benign thyroid nodules and cancer in Korean pediatric patients with thyroid nodules. Methods We investigated the medical records of 134 patients aged younger than 18 years who had a goiter, thyroid nodule, thyroid mass, or thyroid cancer who underwent fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). Results The study population included 113 females (84.3%) and 21 males (13.7%); the mean patient age was 16.1±2.3 years (range, 8-18 years). Of the 134 patients, 24 (18.0%) were finally diagnosed with thyroid cancer, of which 20 (83.3%) were papillary cancer and 4 (16.7%) were follicular cancer. No patient was exposed to radiation. FNAB revealed malignant cancer in 21 of the patients; 3 were initially reported as having benign tumors by FNAB, but were later diagnosed with follicular cancer. An additional 13 patients were suspected to have malignant tumors by FNAB, with a final diagnosis of nodular hyperplasia. Cystic nodules were more common in the benign group. The percentages of cervical lymphadenopathy and irregular nodular margins were higher in the malignant group compared to the benign group. Cervical lymphadenopathy and FNAB malignant findings were highly suggestive of malignant nodules. Conclusion Thyroid cancer prevalence in a Korean pediatric population is comparable to reported estimates of worldwide thyroid cancer prevalence. In this population, cancer predominates on the right thyroid lobe. Papillary thyroid cancers are dominant in the Korean pediatric population but are less prevalent than in Korean adults. As expected, FNAB was highly accurate in predicting malignant nodules.

Purpose To analyze growth patterns over 2 years after birth according to preterm infant birth weight and length percentiles. Methods Anthropometric measurements of 82 preterm infants were retrospectively reviewed. Preterm infants with birth weight or length below the 10th percentile were classified as small for gestational age (SGA) (n=19) and those between the 10th and 89th percentile as appropriate for gestational age (AGA) (n=63). The association between the length standard deviation score (SDS) at 2 years of corrected age and clinical factors were analyzed. Results The length SDS of the SGA group was significantly increased at 6 months (-1.30±1.71) and 24 months (-0.97±1.06) of corrected age. The length SDS was lower in the SGA group than those in the AGA group at 6 months (-1.30±1.71 vs. -0.25±1.15, P=0.004), 18 months (-0.97±1.39 vs. -0.03±1.29, P=0.015), and 24 months (-0.97±1.06 vs. -0.29±1.12, P=0.022,). Hyaluronidase (HAase) is an enzyme that depolymerizes the polysaccharide hyaluronic acid (HA) in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue. Lipoxygenase (LOX) enzyme was reported to convert the arachidonic, linoleic and other polyunsaturated fatty acid into biologically active metabolites involved in the inflammatory and immune responses. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate plant extracts as sources of natural antioxidants and to examine whether Achyranthes japonica having significant DPPH, HAase and LOX inhibitory activity. The inhibitory effect of HAase by A. japonica was assayed using a Morgan microplate assay. The antioxidant activity of the A. japonica extracts was measured on the basis of the scavenging activity of the stable 1, 1- diphenyl 2-picrylhyorazyl (DPPH) free radical. DPPH scavenging activity of matured roots of A. japonica was evaluated at 4.0 mg/ml was 87.8% and that of young roots was 86.2% at same concentration. The roots of A. japonica showed maximum inhibition of HAase activity (IC 50 = 27.7 μg/ml). The highest LOX inhibition was recorded in the root extract among three vegetative parts. Inhibition of HAase activity of roots may contribute towards the development of herbal medicines. In this paper, we implemented the computer vision platform design with MEAN Stack through Raspberry PI 2 model which is an open source platform. we experimented the face recognition, temperature and humidity sensor data logging with WiFi communication under Raspberry Pi 2 model. Especially we directly made the shape of platform with 3D printing design. In this paper, we used the face recognition algorithm with OpenCV software through haarcascade feature extraction machine learning algorithm, and extended the functionality of wireless communication function ability with Bluetooth technology for the purpose of making Android Mobile devices interface. And therefore we implemented the functions of the vision platform for identifying the face recognition characteristics of scanning with PI camera with gathering the temperature and humidity sensor data under IoT environment. and made the vision platform with 3D printing technology. Especially we used MongoDB for developing the performance of vision platform because the MongoDB is more akin to working with objects in a programming language than what we know of as a database. Afterwards, we would enhance the performance of vision platform for clouding functionalities.

In this paper, we implemented the HearCAM platform with Raspberry PI B+ model which is an open source platform. Raspberry PI B+ model consists of dual step-down (buck) power supply with polarity protection circuit and hot-swap protection, Broadcom SoC BCM2835 running at 700MHz, 512MB RAM solered on top of the Broadcom chip, and PI camera serial connector. In this paper, we used the Google speech recognition engine for recognizing the voice characteristics, and implemented the pattern matching with OpenCV software, and extended the functionality of speech ability with SVOX TTS(Text-to-speech) as the matching result talking to the microphone of users. And therefore we implemented the functions of the HearCAM for identifying the voice and pattern characteristics of target image scanning with PI camera with gathering the temperature sensor data under IoT environment. we implemented the speech recognition, pattern matching, and temperature sensor data logging with Wi-Fi wireless communication. And then we directly designed and made the shape of HearCAM with 3D printing technology.

The characteristics of dielectric constant and of low viscosity silicone oils with changing degree of polymerization were investigated. The result shows dipole loss mechanism at low temperature range. The dielectric loss in the range of low frequencies are predominantly of ionic nature with temperature increase. The peak of dielectric loss is the detrapping of the electrons which is were trapped in the localized level of the silicone oils at the frequency of 30 kHz. The increase of ionic conduction is attributed to the presence of ionizable oxidation products and their increased dissociation feature. The activation energy and dipole moment were increased whit increasing degree of polymerization.

This research has been performed by our own investigation, also cooperated with Health and Sanification Division and each of district offices in Busan metropolitan city. After choosing, we collected water samples five times for microbiological examination. As a result of investigating in 160 water samples from urban areas, we could detect 88 cases of Vibrio spp. Furthermore, there were four cases exceeding the acceptable limit of aquarium water (100,00/mL) and another four cases exceeding the limit of Coliform group (1,000 below/100 mL). As a result of investigating that we performed for 271 cases of water samples from coastal areas from April to November, we could detect 130 cases of vibrio species and 10 cases of Coliform group. After performing 17 kinds of antibiotic susceptibility test for 41 cases of isolated Vibrio parahaemolyticus, 27 cases showed tolerance to Amplicllin (AM), all of 31 cases showed intermediate resistance only to Cefazolin (CF) but had sensitivity to the rest of them. As a result of performing antibiotic susceptibility test, serum test and PFGE gene analysis on each 10 pair of Vibrio parahaemolyticus detected concurrently from intake-pipe water and, aquarium water, we couldn``t get data showing that they are clearly same species in three kinds of test. In addition, UV sterilization, Ozonization and so on. Based on our research, intake pipe didn``t have a problem with microbiological contamination so we are sure that the germ came from supplied fish had caused that kind of contamination. For effective management, UV sterilization or Ozonization which can be handled consistently should be adopted in aquarium.

Purpose There was a global increase in the prevalence of oseltamivir-resistant influenza viruses during the 2007-2008 influenza season. This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence and characteristics of oseltamivir-resistant influenza viruses during the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 influenza seasons among patients who were treated with oseltamivir (group A) and those that did not receive oseltamivir (group B). Methods A prospective study was conducted on 321 pediatric patients who were hospitalized because of influenza during the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 influenza seasons. Drug resistance tests were conducted on influenza viruses isolated from 91 patients. Results There was no significant difference between the clinical characteristics of groups A and B during both seasons. Influenza A/H1N1, isolated from both groups A and B during the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 periods, was not resistant to zanamivir. However, phenotypic analysis of the virus revealed a high oseltamivir IC50 range and that H275Y substitution of the neuraminidase (NA) gene and partial variation of the hemagglutinin (HA) gene did not affect its antigenicity to the HA vaccine even though group A had a shorter hospitalization duration and fewer lower respiratory tract complications than group B. In addition, there was no significant difference in the clinical manifestations between oseltamivir-susceptible and oseltamivir-resistant strains of influenza A/H1N1. Conclusion Establishment of guidelines to efficiently treat influenza with oseltamivir, a commonly used drug for treating influenza in Korean pediatric patients, and a treatment strategy with a new therapeutic agent is required.

To monitor newly emerged influenza virus variants and to investigate the prevalence pattern, our laboratory performed isolation of the viruses from surveillance sentinel hospitals. In the present study, we analysed influenza A/H1N1, A/H3N2, B viruses isolated in Busan during the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons by sequence analysis of the hemagglutinin (HA1 subunit) and neuraminidase (NA) genes. The isolates studied here were selected by the stratified random sample method from a total of 277 isolates, in which 15 were A/H1N1, 16 were A/H3N2 and 29 were B. Based on the phylogenetic tree, the HA1 gene showed that A/H1N1 isolates had a 96.7% to 97.7% homology with the A/Brisbane/59/2007, A/H3N2 isolates had a 98.4% to 99.7% homology with the A/Brisbane/10/2007, and B isolates had a 96.5% to 99.7% homology with the B/Florida/4/2006(Yamagata lineage), which are all the vaccine strains for the Northern Hemisphere in 2008~2009 season. In the case of the NA gene, A/H1N1 isolates had 97.8% to 98.5% homologies, A/H3N2 isolates had 98.9% to 99.4% homologies, and B isolates had 98.9% to 100% homologies with each vaccine strain in the 2008~2009 season, respectively. Characterization of the hemagglutinin gene revealed that amino acids at the receptor-binding site and N-linked glycosylation site were highly conserved. These results provide useful information for the control of influenza viruses in Busan and for a better understanding of vaccine strain selection.

The overall prevalence of HPV infection in this study population was 39.1% (258/660) and the 20's showed the highest prevalence of HPV infection (51.5%). The dominant HPV genotypes including single or multiple HPV-infected women were resulted in HPV-16 (15.9%), -53 (10.2%), -58 (7.7%), -18 (5.2%) in case of high-risk HPV genotype and HPV-70 (10.4%), -6 (4.1%), - 11 (2.0%) in case of low-risk HPV genotypes. Remarkably, the proportion of women infected with high-risk HPV genotypes (62.0%) was almost four times higher than those of women infected with low- risk HPV genotypes (14.7%) and high/low-risk HPV genotypes (12.0%). Among the 258 HPV-infected women, single infection was 175, double infection 66, triple infection 12, quadruple infection 4, quintuple infection 1, respectively. Our finding suggests that the introduction and development of effec tive HPV vaccines should consider the current status of HPV genotypic infection in South Korean women.

The hole-injection material PTFE, which is a uoric-system polymer, was deposited at a deposition rate of 0.1 0.2 A/s to a thickness of 2 nm and the Alq3 was deposited at a deposition rate of 1.3 1.5 A/s under high vacuum (5 10 6 Torr) to a thickness of 100 nm. To investigate the dielectric properties of these devices, we measured the complex impedance, which showed that the impedance decreased as the applied voltage was increased and that the dielectric loss exhibited a peak at a certain voltage. A Cole-Cole plot of the impedance was plotted and analyzed. As the applied voltage was increased, the radius of the Cole-Cole plot decreased. Electrical characteristics of organic light-emitting diodes were investigated by varying a hole-size in evaporation boat in the device structure of ITO/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum/Al. The device was manufactured using a thermal evaporation under a base pressure of Torr. The emitting organics were evaporated to be a thickness of 100 nm at a deposition rate of . A cylindrical-shaped evaporation boat was made out of stainless steel with a small size of hole on top of the boat. Several evaporation boats were made having a different hole size on top; 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, and 3.0 mm. We found that when the hole size on top of the evaporation boat is 1.0 mm, the average roughness is rather smoother compared to the other ones. Also, luminance and external quantum efficiency are superior to the others. Compared to the ones from the devices made with the hole-size of 0.8 mm boat. The luminance and external quantum efficiency of the device made with the hole-size of 1.0 mm boat were improved by a factor of seventy and thirty three, respectively. Also operating voltage is reduced to 2 V.

Most of the high voltage insulation systems, such as the power cable joint having hetero interface, are composed of more than two different insulators to improve insulating performance. The partial discharge(PD) in these hetero interface is expected to affect the total insulation performance. Thus, it is important to study electrical properties on these interfaces. This study described the influence of copper and semiconductive substance defects on -q-n distribution between the interface of the model cable joints to classify PD source. PD was sequentially detected for 600 cycles of the applied voltage. The K-means cluster analysis has been analyzed to investigate the -q-n distribution. The skewness-kurtosis(Sk-Ku) plot from K-means clustering results was defined to quantify cluster distribution and classify distribution patterns. The Sk-Ku plot is composed of skewness and kurtosis along abscissa and ordinate which indicate the asymmetry and the sharpness of distribution. As a result of the Sk-Ku plot, it was confirmed that the data was distributed in 1st 2nd and 3rd quadrant at copper foreign substance defect, but in case of semiconductive foreign substance, the data was distributed in 2nd quadrant only.

To investigate the influence of partial discharge(PD) distribution characteristics due to various defects on the power cable joints interface, we used the K-means clustering method. As the result of PD number(n) distribution analyzing on graph, the phase angle() of cluster centroid shifted to increasing with applying voltage. It was confirmed that the PD quantify(q) and euclidean distance of centroid were increased with applying voltage from the centroid distribution analyzing of plane. The dispersion degree was increased with calculated standard deviation of the cluster centroid. The PD number and mean value on graph were some different by electric field concentration with defect types.

This paper describes the influence on partial discharge characteristics of defects at the model XLPE/EPDM interfaces of power cable joints. The defects of void and copper which could inadvertently be present at the joint interface. We measured patterns by a computer-aided partial discharge measuring system. Several parameters i, e, maximum discharge [pC], average discharge q [pC/cycle], and average angle of discharge [deg] were found to depend upon the defect type varying applied voltage. As the result of time evaluation, partial discharges are small different at copper defects, but is decreasing obviously about 20 minutes at void defect. It considered that difference of magnitude of total positive discharge of Q+ [pC] and total negative discharge of Q- [pC] is SPMD(swarming pulsive micro discharges).

Species of genus Acanthopanax (Araliaceae) are long-lived trees primarily distributed throughout East Asia. These species are regarded as medically and ecologically important in Korea. A variety of Cheongsong in Korea is one of these cultivated varieties, however this variety is much longer (＞100 years) than those of other cultivated groups. The components of variety of Acanthopanax in Cheongsong were analyzed for the first time and were compared to those of all Acanthopanax taxa in Korea. Nineteen components were specific to variety in Cheongsong. The main components of this variety were β-caryophyllene, hexadecanoic acid and ethyl stearate. Although some components are differ from each other, variety Cheongsong was similar to A. senticosus at phenetic topology with content of the chemicals, In addition, six species of genus Acanthopanax were investigated to compare the major chemical components by GC-MS.

We investigated the effects of deposition rate on the electrical characteristics and optical characteristics of organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs) in the ITO(indium-tin-oxide)/N,N′-diphenyl-N,N′-bis(3-methyphenyl)-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine(TPD)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3)/Al device. We measured current density, luminous flux and luminance characteristics of devices by varying deposition rates of TPD and Alq3. It has been found that optimal deposition rate of TPD and Alq3 was 1.5 A˚/s. AFM measurement shows that surface roughness of the deposited film was the lowest when the deposition rate was 1.5 A˚/s.

The prefabricated type used generally in Korea to join cable runs on new installations, because installation is very simple and save time. This type is a permanent, shielded and submersible cable joint for direct burial or vault application. It confirms to the requirements of IEEE std. 404-2004 by factory testing, but many problems of insulated cable systems are caused by internal defects of the joint part which have to be mounted onsite. Faults arise from impurities or voids. A suitable solution for a monitoring of cable joints during the after-laying test and service is partial discharge detection. This paper described the influence on partial discharge distribution of various defects at the model power cable joints interface by statistical processing. As the result of analyzing Phi-q-n patterns, several parameters i. e. maximum discharge qmax, average discharge q and average angle of discharge thetasg were found to depend upon the defect type varying applied voltage. As the result of analyzing discharge number distribution of Phi-n cluster using K-means clustering, clusters shifted to 0deg and 180deg with increasing applying voltage. It was confirmed that discharge quantity and Euclidean distance between centroids were increased with applying voltage from the analyzing centroid distribution of Phi-q cluster.

목적: BCG 접종 후의 비교적 흔한 이상반응인 국소 림프절염은 일반적으로 1% 미만에서 발생하는데 BCG 균주와 접종법 등에 따라 발생률이 다를 수 있다. 현재 우리나라에서는 Danish 균주 피내법과 Tokyo 균주 경피법의 BCG가 접종되고 있으며, 이에 대한 국소 림프절염의 발생률을 조사하였다. 방법: 총 25개의 의료기관(종합병원 5개소, 소아청소년과 의원 20개소)에서 조사가 이루어졌다. BCG 균주의 종류는 접종 부위의 반흔을 직접 확인하였고, BCG 접종 후 림프절염의 발생 여부는 보호자에게 직접 질문을 하여 확인하였다. 림프절염이 발생한 경우는 그 위치, 크기, 화농화 여부 및 경과, 치료법에 대해서도 조사하였다. 결과: 모두 3,342례에서 조사되었고, 이 중 기준에 적합한 대상자만을 분석하였는데 총 3,222례로 Tokyo 균주 경피법이 2,501례, Danish 균주 피내법이 721례이었다. 림프절의 크기를 고려하지 않을 때의 BCG 림프절염은 각 균주마다 5례에서 발생하여 그 발생률이 Tokyo 균주 경피법은 0.20%, Danish 균주 피내법에서는 0.69%이었다(P=0.086). 그러나 국제보건기구의 기준, 즉 림프절의 직경이 1.5 cm 이상일 때를 림프절염이 발생한 것으로 정의했을 때 Tokyo 균주 경피법은 0.16% (4례), Danish 균주 피내법에서는 0.42% (3례)이었다. 결론: 현재 국내에서 사용하고 있는 두 가지 BCG 균주, Tokyo 균주 경피법과 Danish 균주 피내법에 대한 림프절염 발생률은 각각 0.20%와 0.69%로 두 균주 모두 받아들여지는 수치이다.

In order to investigate the effects of morphological changes on electrical breakdown, we studied direct current and impulse breakdown phenomena of low density polyethylene films annealed at 100/spl deg/C for 60 minutes in silicone oil and subsequently cooled in various ways. The degree of crystallinity was estimated by infrared absorption and X-ray diffraction measurements for specimens slowly cooled in air, cooled in water, and cooled in liquid nitrogen (LN/sub 2/). The crystalline size and distribution of the specimen were measured by differential scanning calorimetry methods. The impulse breakdown strength at 30 and 50/spl deg/C increased with decreasing crystallinity, suggesting a thermal electronic breakdown process. The impulse breakdown strength decreased with increasing temperature in line with Frohlich-type breakdown theory. The DC breakdown strength was only dependent on crystallinity in the high temperature region.

A study has been carried out on volume resistivity of low density polyethylene (LDPE) which is irradiated with an electron beam by using an electron beam accelerator. From the analysis of DSC, the crystalline melting point of the specimen irradiated with electron beam is lower than that of original specimen. It is confirmed that the volume resistivity increased as temperatures increase from 60[/spl deg/C] to the crystalline melting point because of the defects of the solid structure and the formation of many trap centers by mean of electron beam irradiation, but decreased as temperatures go over the crystalline melting point because of the crystalline melting.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to identify the viral etiology of acute respiratory illnesses and to determine epidemiology in outpatients in Busan, Korea. Methods : We collected nasal wash samples from 990 patients who visited the hospital for acute respiratory illnesses between January 2007 and December 2008. Extracted DNA or RNA from specimens was used for viral detection by an RT-PCR method. Results : Of a total of 990 samples, viruses were detected in 351 cases (35.5%). The ratio of male to female was 1.6:1 and 93.7% were less than 5 years old. Rhinovirus was detected year-round in 202 cases (57.5%), respiratory syncytial virus from October to March in 57 cases (16.2%), adenovirus year-round in 37 cases (10.5%), influenza virus from December to April in 21 cases (6%), bocavirus from January to August in 15 cases (4.3%), parainfluenza virus from April to July in 9 cases (2.6%), coronavirus from January to July in 7 cases (2%), and enterovirus from June to September in 3 cases (0.9%). Conclusion : We identified the etiology and epidemiology of viruses that caused the acute respiratory diseases that were prevalent in Busan, 2007-2008. Further surveillance will be necessary.

Purpose : Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most frequent cause of lower respiratory infections in infants and young children. Early detection allows quarantining of infected inpatients to prevent nosocomial transmission and to choose a treatment. To achieve rapid reporting, to facilitate prompt antiviral therapy, and to avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics, an easy, rapid diagnostic method for RSV is needed. We evaluated a lateral flow immunochromatography (RSV Respi-Strip test) and EIA (Enzyme immuno assay) compared to RT-PCR. Methods : From April 2007 to March 2008, 112 consecutive respiratory specimens (nasopharyngeal aspirates, throat swabs, tracheal aspirates, sputum) from patients who were suffering from the clinical signs and symptoms of respiratory tract infection were enrolled in Busan. A total of 112 patients were tested with RSV Respi-Strip (Corio-BioConcept, Belgium), EIA, and RT-PCR at the same time. Results : Of the 112 specimens tested, the number of children who showed positive results at RT-PCR and Respi-Strip were 45 and 42, respectively. The Respi-Strip rapid antigen test had a sensitivity of 88% and a specificity of 94%. The positive and negative predictive values were 90% and 92%, respectively. The agreement was 83%. Conclusion : In our study, the rapid antigen test had as much sensitivity as any method for detection of RSV. The test has many advantages such as easy performance, simple interpretation, and rapid results. If the rapid antigen test is widely applied in the clinical setting, the may be useful for diagnostic and epidemiological studies of RSV infection.
