Age-related hyperkyphosis is thought to be a result of underlying vertebral fractures, but studies suggest that among the most hyperkyphotic women, only one in three have underlying radiographic vertebral fractures. Although commonly observed, there is no widely accepted definition of hyperkyphosis in older persons, and other than vertebral fracture, no major causes have been identified. To identify important correlates of kyphosis and risk factors for its progression over time, we conducted a 15-year retrospective cohort study of 1196 women, aged 65 years and older at baseline (1986 to 1988), from four communities across the United States: Baltimore County, MD; Minneapolis, MN; Portland, OR; and the Monongahela Valley, PA. Cobb angle kyphosis was measured from radiographs obtained at baseline and an average of 3.7 and 15 years later. Repeated measures, mixed effects analyses were performed. At baseline, the mean kyphosis angle was 44.7 degrees (SE = 0.4, SD = 11.9) and significant correlates included a family history of hyperkyphosis, prevalent vertebral fracture, low bone mineral density, greater body weight, degenerative disc disease, and smoking. Over an average of 15 years, the mean increase in kyphosis was 7.1 degrees (SE = 0.25). Independent determinants of greater kyphosis progression were prevalent and incident vertebral fractures, low bone mineral density and concurrent bone density loss, low body weight, and concurrent weight loss. Thus, age-related kyphosis progression may be best prevented by slowing bone density loss and avoiding weight loss.

Objective: The objective of the study was to find the prevalence of risk of kyphotic posture in Laptop user using Academicians using the Occiput Wall Distance Test. Methodology: An observational study was conducted. The simple random technique was used to select 100 participants. A questionnaire was used to collect demographic information of participants and Occiput Wall Distance was used to evaluate the severity of kyphotic Kyphotic posture. Chi-square test was applied to analyse analyse the association between occiput wall test and age, gender, BMI and hours of laptop use. Results: The result showed the presence of kyphosis in academicians. Total laptop users Out of were 100 participants in which 63 % of participants had mild kyphosis, 26 % of participants had moderate kyphosis and 11 % had severe kyphosis. There is was no association between academicians' gender and hours of laptop use was found in Occiput Wall Distance test whereas, there isa significant association was found between academicians' age and BMI with occiput wall distance test was observed. Background: There is a misconception about Kyphotic posture which concludes that it' sit's probably being a gender biased phenomenon or depending depends upon the number of hours a person spendst on laptop, the greater the time, the more the chances of it. Whereas in actual, it is dependent upon the age and the actual BMI of an individual. Conclusion: The greater the age and BMI the greater the chances of Kyphotic posture, however one with growing age can certainly minimize the risk of Kyphotic posture by maintaining their BMI with the growing age as the old saying goes that obesity is the mother of all problems therefore one should definitely keep an eye on their BMI to overcome the risks of all the risks in life. In rodents, the most representative component of maternal behavior that meets the purpose of newborn nutrition is the kyphotic posture. During this posture, the mother maintains a unique environment for the protection, thermal regulation and breast-feeding of the progeny. The aim of this study was to investigate possible deficiencies in the kyphotic posture of adult lactating dams with pre- and neonatal undernutrition evoked by their own pups suckling in a home-cage situation. Wistar dams that had been previously exposed to perinatal undernutrition were mated at 90 days of age, and pregnancy was confirmed by vaginal smears. Before testing if the perinatal underfed dam affected behavior, pups were removed (4 h), and both the maternal response and the kyphotic posture were video-recorded (1 h) and analyzed at 4 and 12 days of lactation. Pre- and post-test litter weight gain was obtained. To immunostain the caudal periaqueductal gray, the litter was separated from their dams 24 h before suckling stimulation. The results showed that underfed dams significantly reduced the duration of high kyphosis by choosing unconventional postures (prone and partial kyphosis). The body weight of the F1 offspring was significantly reduced, and the underfed F0 dams showed reduced c-Fos immunostaining at the caudal periaqueductal gray. The findings showed that early underfed dams have deficiencies in the mechanisms underlying the kyphosis, possibly because the pups' cues to evoke this posture were suboptimal and/or because the dam expressed deficient nursing. The results suggest that the abnormal kyphotic posture may affect the mother-litter bonds and have long-term effects on neonatal brain functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Study Design: A cohort study using data from the Locomotive Syndrome and Health Outcome in Aizu Cohort Study, a population-based prospective cohort study of residents of the towns of Tadami and Minamiaizu in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Objective: The aim of this study was to clarify the association between kyphotic posture and falls, and to investigate the presence or absence of sex differences.Summary Of Background Data: In our literature review, we found no studies focusing on sex differences in the association between kyphotic posture and falls. Methods: We included subjects aged more than 40 years who participated in annual health check-ups from 2009 to 2010. We analyzed the effects of kyphotic posture, measured using the wall-occiput test (WOT), on falls, adjusting for potential confounders, such as age, body mass index, symptoms of depression, sedative medication, and other comorbidities. Results: We enrolled a total of 1418 subjects into primary analyses (593 men, 825 women; mean [standard deviation] age, 68.1 [7.7] yrs). We then stratified subjects into the following groups according to the degree of kyphotic posture: nonkyphotic posture (n = 1138, 80.3%), mild kyphotic posture (n = 172, 12.1%), and severe kyphotic posture (n = 108, 7.6%). We observed no significant difference in the severity of kyphotic posture between men and women (P = 0.18). Overall, 284 subjects (20.0%) experienced at least one fall during the one-year period. After adjustment for potential confounders using a logistic regression model, we observed a significant association between severe kyphotic posture and falls for men [odds ratio (OR) 2.14 (1.01-4.57); P = 0.048]. In contrast, we observed no significant association for women [OR for severe kyphotic posture 0.80 (0.43-1.50), OR for mild kyphotic posture 0.91 (0.53-1.57)].Conclusion: We identified a sex difference in the association between kyphotic posture and falls in community-dwelling adults. In particular, severe kyphotic posture might only increase the incidence of falls in men.Level Of Evidence: 3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The study involved 30 children aged 9–10 years with the kyphotic infringement of posture. These disorders require special attention, because the rapid pace of development threatens disrup- tion of the internal organs of the body. During the study of medical examination cards of all children who were supervised, kyphotic changes in posture were determined. All children complained about discomfort in the thoracic spine, which are 60 % of patients, at the waist – 50 %, and difficulties of movement of the spine were noted by 40 % of children. The violation of posture is due to irrational mode of physical activity, lack of regular loads, aimed at developing and strengthening the musculoskeletal system. The peculiarities of age of the individual organism contribute to the emergence of posture disorders. While conducting a set of preventive and rehabilitative measures, the anthropometric methods were applied: determination of growth parameters, indicators of strength and power endurance of muscles – the extensor back; testing of posture was carried by somatoskopic method. The complex rehabilitation and preventive measures of primary school children were: gymnastics, classical and segmental massage, aqua-gymnastics, swimming. Based on the processed methodical provisions a set of special therapeutic exercises was developed. During the posture training the main task was to slow down old and to establish new connections in the cerebral cortex, with the construction of new motor ways. The formation of correct posture included: formation of a childʼs imagination about correct posture, correct posture education reflex, common development and create muscle corset in children, exercises which have to strengthen muscle- articulate feelings. The use of physical rehabilitation allows quickly and fully restores impaired posture and positively affects the dynamics of clinical parameters, physical development of children of primary school age.

The main goal of the study was to determine the influence of the long-term rhythmic gymnastics training process on certain motor abilities and on the posture of elite Croatian rhythmic gymnasts. The sample was composed of 35 girls aged 12.89 (±2.32) years from Zagreb, Croatia. Fifteen of them were rhythmic gymnasts who have trained 8.93 hours per week on average, for at least 5 years. The control group consisted of 20 female pupils of the primary school “Borovje” who were not engaged in any regular sporting activity beside physical education classes. The measures consisted of 17 postural variables and 8 tests assessing motor abilities. The t-test for independent samples showed marked statistical differences in arithmetic means between the two groups for all the motor variables. Mann-Whitney U test showed no differences between the two groups in all the posture variables, but one. The two groups differed significantly only in the variable kyphosis, showing that poor kyphotic posture was more frequent in non-trainees (p=.03). The variables Lorenz’s triangle and frontal shoulder position almost reached statistical significance (p=.06 and p=.07, respectively). Although the mentioned results failed to fall within the range of statistical significance, they are of substantial clinical importance, showing the tendency to a greater frequency of poor scoliotic posture in rhythmic gymnasts. The obtained results pointed out the positive side of sport: a good level of motor abilities and a minor incidence of poor kyphotic posture. Clinically, the results also indicate some sport-specific postural problems that may occur due to asymmetric overload. However, since statistical significance was not reached, there is a need to investigate further the influence of persistent asymmetric overloading of the spine on rhythmic gymnasts` posture.
