The environmental variations and their interactions with the biosphere are vital in the Arctic Ocean during the summer sea-ice melting period in the current scenario of climate change. Hence, we analysed the vertical distribution of bacterial and archaeal communities in the western Arctic Ocean from sea surface melt-ponds to deep water up to a 3040 m depth. The distribution of microbial communities showed a clear stratification with significant differences among different water depths, and the water masses in the Arctic Ocean - surface mixed layer, Atlantic water mass and deep Arctic water - appeared as a major factor explaining their distribution in the water column. A total of 34 bacterial phyla were detected in the seawater and 10 bacterial phyla in melt-ponds. Proteobacteria was the dominant phyla in the seawater irrespective of depth, whereas Bacteroidota was the dominant phyla in the melt-ponds. A fast expectation-maximization microbial source tracking analysis revealed that only limited dispersion of the bacterial community was possible across the stratified water column. The surface water mass contributed 21% of the microbial community to the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), while the DCM waters contributed only 3% of the microbial communities to the deeper water masses. Atlantic water mass contributed 37% to the microbial community of the deep Arctic water. Oligotrophic heterotrophic bacteria were dominant in the melt-ponds and surface waters, whereas chemoautotrophic and mixotrophic bacterial and archaeal communities were abundant in deeper waters. Chlorophyll and ammonium were the major environmental factors that determined the surface microbial communities, whereas inorganic nutrient concentrations controlled the deep-water communities.

The Arctic Ocean experiences warming-induced processes, such as the decrease in sea-ice extent and freshening of the surface layer. While these processes have the potential to alter primary production and carbon export to the deep layer, the changes that will likely occur in them are still poorly understood. To assess the potential changes in net community production (NCP), a measure of biological carbon export to the deep layer, in response to climate change, we observed the O2/Ar at the surface of the northern Chukchi Sea in the summers of 2017 and 2020. The NCP estimates derived from O2/Ar measurements were largely in the range of 1 -- 11 mmol O2 m-2 d-1 in the northern Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, close to the lower bounds of the values in the global oceans. The average NCP of 1.5 ± 1.7 mmol O2 m-2 d-1 in 2020 was substantially lower than 7.1 ± 7.4 mmol O2 m-2 d-1 in 2017, with the most pronounced decrease occurring in the ice-free region of the northern Chukchi Sea; the NCP of the ice-free region in 2020 was only 12% of that in 2017. The decrease in 2020 was accompanied by a lower salinity of >2, which resulted in shallower mixed layer depths and stronger stratification. We speculated that the anomalously low pressure near the east Russian coast and the lack of strong winds contributed to the strong stratification in 2020. With a continuing decrease in the extent of sea ice, the northern Chukchi Sea will likely experience earlier phytoplankton blooms and nitrate exhaustion. Unless winds blow strong enough to break the stratification, the biological carbon export in late summer is likely to remain weak.

Accelerated warming and a decline in sea ice coverage in the summertime Arctic Ocean can significantly affect the emissions of marine organic aerosols and biogenic volatile organic compounds. However, how these changes affect the characteristics of atmospheric water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), which plays an important role in the climate system, remains unclear. Thus, to improve our understanding of WSOC characteristics, including its summertime fluorescence characteristics, in the rapidly changing Arctic Ocean, we simultaneously measured atmospheric concentrations of ionic species and WSOC, fluorescence excitation–emission matrix coupled with parallel factor (EEM–PARAFAC) analysis of WSOC, and marine biological parameters in surface seawaters of the western Arctic Ocean during the summer of 2016. WSOC was predominantly present as fine-mode aerosols (diameter < 2.5 μm) (median = 92 %) with the mean concentration being higher in the coastal water areas (462 ± 130 ngC m−3) than in the sea ice-covered areas (242 ± 88.4 ngC m−3). Moreover, the WSOC in the fine-mode aerosols was positively correlated with the methanesulfonic acid in the fine-mode aerosol samples collected over the sea ice-covered areas (r = 0.88, p < 0.01, n = 10), suggesting high sea–air gas exchange and emissions of aerosol precursor gases due to sea ice retreat and increasing available solar radiation during the Arctic summer. Two fluorescent components, humic-like C1 and protein-like C2, were identified by the PARAFAC modeling of fine-mode atmospheric WSOC. The two components varied regionally between coastal and sea ice-covered areas, with low and high fluorescence intensities observed over the coastal areas and sea ice-covered areas, respectively. Further, the humification index of WSOC was correlated with the fluorescence intensity ratio of the humic-like C1/protein-like C2 (r = 0.89, p < 0.01) and the WSOC concentration in the fine-mode aerosols (r = 0.66, p < 0.05), with the highest values observed in the coastal areas. Additionally, the WSOC concentration in the fine-mode aerosols was positively correlated with the fluorescence intensity ratio of the humic-like C1/protein-like C2 (r = 0.77, p < 0.01), but was negatively correlated to the biological index (r = −0.69, p < 0.01). Overall, these results suggested that the WSOC in the fine-mode aerosols in the coastal areas showed a higher degree of polycondensation and higher aromaticity compared that in the sea ice-covered areas, where WSOC in the fine-mode aerosols was associated with relatively new, less oxygenated, and biologically-derived secondary organic components. The findings can improve our understanding of the chemical and biological linkages of WSOC at the ocean–sea ice–atmosphere interface.

The western Arctic Ocean (WAO) has experienced increased heat transport into the region, sea-ice reduction, and changes to the WAO nitrous oxide (N2O) cycles from greenhouse gases. We investigated WAO N2O dynamics through an intensive and precise N2O survey during the open-water season of summer 2017. The effects of physical processes (i.e., solubility and advection) were dominant in both the surface (0–50 m) and deep layers (200–2200 m) of the northern Chukchi Sea with an under-saturation of N2O. By contrast, both the surface layer (0–50 m) of the southern Chukchi Sea and the intermediate (50–200 m) layer of the northern Chukchi Sea were significantly influenced by biogeochemically derived N2O production (i.e., through nitrification), with N2O over-saturation. During summer 2017, the southern region acted as a source of atmospheric N2O (mean: + 2.3 ± 2.7 μmol N2O m−2 day−1), whereas the northern region acted as a sink (mean − 1.3 ± 1.5 μmol N2O m−2 day−1). If Arctic environmental changes continue to accelerate and consequently drive the productivity of the Arctic Ocean, the WAO may become a N2O “hot spot”, and therefore, a key region requiring continued observations to both understand N2O dynamics and possibly predict their future changes.

The Makarov Basin halocline receives contributions from diverse water masses of Atlantic, Pacific, and East Siberian Sea origin. Changes in surface circulation (e.g., in the Transpolar Drift and Beaufort Gyre) have been documented since the 2000s, while the upper ocean column in the Makarov Basin has received little attention. The evolution of the upper and lower halocline in the Makarov Basin and along the East Siberian Sea slope was examined combining drifting platforms observations, shipborne hydrographic data, and modelled fields from a global operational physical model.In 2015, the upper halocline in the Makarov Basin was warmer, fresher, and thicker compared to 2008 and 2017, likely resulting from the particularly westward extension of the Beaufort Gyre that year. From 2012-onwards, cold Atlantic-derived lower halocline waters, previously restricted to the Lomonosov Ridge area, progressed eastward along the East Siberian slope, with a sharp shift from 155 to 170°E above the 1000 m isobath in winter 2011-2012, followed by a progressive eastward motion after winter 2015-2016 and reached the western Chukchi Sea in 2017. In parallel, an active mixing between upwelled Atlantic water and shelf water along the slope, formed dense warm water which also supplied the Makarov Basin lower halocline.The progressive weakening of the halocline, together with shallower Atlantic Waters, is emblematic of a new Arctic Ocean regime that started in the early 2000s in the Eurasian Basin. Our results suggest that this new Arctic regime now may extend toward the Amerasian Basin.

The Arctic Ocean is now facing dramatic environmental and ecosystem changes. In this context, an international multiship survey project was undertaken in 2020 to obtain current baseline data. For the first time, extremely low dissolved oxygen and acidified water were found in a fishable area of the western Arctic Ocean. The data suggested that the Beaufort Gyre shrank to the east of an ocean ridge and formed a front between the water within the gyre and the water expanded from the eastern Arctic. That phenomenon triggered a frontal northward flow that was 2–3 times faster than before. This flow could transport the low oxygen and acidified water, which had ever appeared only in the shelf-slope of the East Siberian Sea, toward the fishable area.

Haptophytes (Hacrobia: Haptophyta), which can perform phototrophic, phagotrophic, or mixotrophic nutritional modes, are critical for element cycling in a variety of aquatic ecosystems. However, their diversity, particularly in the changing Arctic Ocean (AO), remains largely unknown. In the present study, the biodiversity, community composition, and co-occurrence networks of pico-sized haptophytes in the surface water and subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layer of the AO were explored. Our results found higher alpha diversity estimates in the surface water compared with in the SCM based on high-throughput sequencing of haptophyte specific 18S rRNA. The community composition of the surface water was significantly different from that of the SCM, and water temperature was identified as the primary factor shaping the community compositions. Prymnesiales (mostly Chrysochromulina), uncultured Prymnesiophyceae, and Phaeocystis dominated the surface water communities, whereas Phaeocystis dominated the SCM communities, followed by Chrysochromulina, uncultured Prymnesiophyceae, and the remaining taxa. The communities of the surface water and SCM layer developed relatively independent modules in the metacommunity network. Nodes in the surface water were more closely connected to one another than those in the SCM. Network stability analysis revealed that surface water networks were more stable than SCM networks. These findings suggest that SCM communities are more susceptible to environmental fluctuations than those in surface water and that future global changes (e.g., global warming) may profoundly influence the development, persistence, and service of SCM in the AO.

Widespread ice shelf thinning has been recorded in the Amundsen Sea in recent decades, driven by basal melting and intrusions of relatively warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) onto the continental shelf. The Dotson Ice Shelf (DIS) is located to the south of the Amundsen Sea polynya, and has a high basal melting rate because modified CDW (mCDW) fills the Dotson-Getz Trough (DGT) and reaches the base of the ice shelf. Here, hydrographic data in the DGT obtained during seven oceanographic surveys from 2007 to 2018 were used to study the interannual variation in mCDW volume and properties and their causes. Although mCDW volume showed relatively weak interannual variations at the continental shelf break, these variations intensified southward and reached a maximum in front of the DIS. There, the mCDW volume was ~8,000 km3 in 2007, rapidly decreased to 4,700 km3 in 2014 before rebounding to 7,300 km3 in 2018. We find that such interannual variability is coherent with local Ekman pumping integrated along the DGT modulated by the presence of sea ice, and complementing earlier theories involving shelf break winds only. The interannual variability in strength of the dominant south-southeast coastal wind modulates the amplitude of Ekman upwelling along the eastern boundary of the Amundsen Sea polynya during the austral summers of the surveyed years, apparently leading to change in the volume of mCDW along the DGT. We note a strong correlation between the wind variability and the longitudinal location of the Amundsen Sea Low.

SummaryViruses are important regulatory factors of marine microbial community including microeukaryotes. However, little is known about their role in the northern Chukchi Sea of the Arctic basin, which remains oligotrophic conditions in summer. To elucidate linkages of microbial eukaryotic community with viruses as well as environmental variables, we investigated the community structures of microeukaryotes (3–144 µm and 0.2–3 µm size fractions) andImitervirales(0.2–3 µm size fraction), a major group of viruses infecting marine microeukaryotes. Surface water samples were collected at 21 ocean stations located in the northeastern Chukchi Sea (NECS), an adjacent area outside the Beaufort Gyre (Adjacent Sea; AS), and two melt ponds on sea ice in the summer of 2018. At the ocean stations, nutrient concentrations were low in most of the locations expect at the shelf in the AS. The community variations were significantly correlated between eukaryotes andImitervirales, even within the NECS characterized by relatively homogeneous environmental conditions. The association of the eukaryotic community with the viral community was stronger than that with geographical and physicochemical environmental factors. These results suggest thatImiterviralesare actively infecting their hosts even in cold and oligotrophic sea water in the Arctic Ocean.

Hydrographic data collected from research cruises, bottom‐anchored moorings, drifting Ice‐Tethered Profilers, and satellite altimetry in the Beaufort Gyre region of the Arctic Ocean document an increase of more than 6,400 km3 of liquid freshwater content from 2003 to 2018: a 40% growth relative to the climatology of the 1970s. This fresh water accumulation is shown to result from persistent anticyclonic atmospheric wind forcing (1997–2018) accompanied by sea ice melt, a wind‐forced redirection of Mackenzie River discharge from predominantly eastward to westward flow, and a contribution of low salinity waters of Pacific Ocean origin via Bering Strait. Despite significant uncertainties in the different observations, this study has demonstrated the synergistic value of having multiple diverse datasets to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of Beaufort Gyre freshwater content variability. To clarify the influence of sea ice concentration on phytoplankton community distribution in the rapidly warming Arctic Ocean, we conducted field surveys in August 2012 and August 2015 in the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas. The phytoplankton community structures (derived from pigment analysis) were compared according to environmental variables between the two periods. August 2012 had the lowest average sea ice concentration since sea ice observations began in 1979, along with higher sea surface temperatures. A deeper mixed layer depth and higher surface nitrate concentrations were observed in 2012, caused by exposure of the sea surface to wind. The euphotic depth and subsurface chlorophyll maximum layer were deeper in 2015 than in 2012, and whereas the low surface phytoplankton biomass in both years indicated post-bloom periods. Similar phytoplankton biomass and different phytoplankton community structure were found between ice and melt years. Small phytoflagellates (e.g., prymnesiophytes, prasinophytes, dinoflagellates, and cryptophytes) dominated the phytoplankton biomass with different community structures in the eastern and western areas in 2012, while diatoms dominated over the whole study area in 2015. Several environmental factors affect the variation in phytoplankton community structure in the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas; however, the phytoplankton, especially diatoms, appeared to be controlled mainly by seeding from sea ice in the surface layer. Furthermore, euphotic depth and water mass structure are likely the main factors influencing the spatial distribution of phytoplankton in the subsurface layer of this area, indicating that the phytoplankton community structure might be influenced by the water mass distribution under future ice-free conditions.

Recent global warming is profoundly and increasingly influencing the Arctic ecosystem. Understanding how microeukaryote communities respond to changes in the Arctic Ocean is crucial for understanding their roles in the biogeochemical cycles of nutrients and elements. Between July 22 and August 19, 2016, during cruise ARA07, seawater samples were collected along a latitudinal transect extending from the East Sea of Korea to the central Arctic Ocean. Environmental RNA was extracted and the V4 hypervariable regions of the reverse transcribed SSU rRNA were amplified. The sequences generated by high throughput sequencing were clustered into zero-radius OTUs (ZOTUs), and the taxonomic identities of each ZOTU were assigned using SINTAX against the PR2 database. Thus, the diversity, community composition, and co-occurrence networks of size fractionated microeukaryotes were revealed. The present study found: 1) the alpha diversity of pico- and nano-sized microeukaryotes showed a latitudinal diversity gradient; 2) three distinct communities were identified, i.e., the Leg-A, Leg-B surface, and Leg-B subsurface chlorophyll a maximum (SCM) groups; 3) distinct network structure and composition were found in the three groups; and 4) water temperature was identified as the primary factor driving both the alpha and beta diversities of microeukaryotes. This study conducted a comprehensive and systematic survey of active microeukaryotes along a latitudinal gradient, elucidated the diversity, community composition, co-occurrence relationships, and community assembly processes among major microeukaryote assemblages, and will help shed more light on our understanding of the responses of microeukaryote communities to the changing Arctic Ocean.

Arctic sea ice entraps microplastics (MP) from seawater and atmosphere and is recognized as sink and transport vector of MPs. However, ice-trapped fraction in the global MP budget, contribution of atmospheric input, and linkage among Arctic basins remain unclear. To assess them, we investigated the number- and mass-based data separated by size and shape geometry for MPs in sea ice, snow, and melt pond water from the western Arctic Ocean (WAO). A significant dependency of MP data on measured cutoff size and geometry was found. For the same size range and geometry, sea ice MPs in WAO ((11.4 ± 9.12) × 103 N m-3 for ≥ 100 µm) were within comparable levels with those in other Arctic basins, but showed closer similarity in polymer and shape compositions between WAO and Arctic Central Basin, indicating the strong linkage of the two basins by the Transpolar Drift. Recent rapid thinning of West Antarctic ice shelves are believed to be caused by intrusions of warm deep water that induce basal melting and seaward meltwater export. Dotson Ice Shelf has a high basal melt rate due to southward ocean heat transport in the Dotson-Getz Trough. We deployed three bottom-moored instrument arrays along the ice shelf calving front, obtaining continuous records of temperature, salinity, and current velocity throughout 2014 and 2015. Southward deep water velocities were highest along the eastern channel slope, while northward outflows of freshened ice shelf meltwater spread at intermediate depth above the western slope. Inflow warm water along the eastern slope into the sub-Dotson cavity reached a maximum of 182 MW m− 1 in Summer, 3.5 times larger than the autumn/winter values of 51 MW m− 1. The inflow correlated with the local ocean surface stress curl. At the western slope meltwater outflows were strongest during autumn and weakest in spring, following the warm influx along the eastern slope with a ~ 2–3 months delay. Ocean circulation near Dotson Ice Shelf, affected by sea ice distribution and wind, appears to be a significant control on the inflow of warm water and subsequent ice shelf melting on seasonal time-scales.

Analysis of the biochemical composition (carbohydrates, CHO, proteins, PRT, lipids, LIP) of particulate organic matter (POM, mainly phytoplankton) is used to assess trophic states, and the quantity of food material is generally assessed to determine bioavailability, however, bioavailability is reduced or changed by enzymatic hydrolysis. Here, we investigated the current trophic state and bioavailability of phytoplankton in the Chukchi Sea (including the Chukchi Borderland) during the summer of 2017. Based on a cluster analysis, our 12 stations were divided into three groups: the southern, middle, and northern parts of the Chukchi Sea. A principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that relatively nutrient-rich and high-temperature waters in the southern part of the Chukchi Sea enhanced the microphytoplankton biomass, while picophytoplankton were linked to a high contribution of meltwater derived from sea ice melting in the northern part of the sea. The total PRT accounted for 41.8% (&plusmn, 7.5%) of the POM in the southern part of the sea, and this contribution was higher than those in the middle (26.5 &plusmn, 7.5%) and northern (26.5 &plusmn, 10.6%) parts, whereas the CHO accounted for more than half of the total POM in the northern parts. As determined by enzymatic hydrolysis, LIP were more rapidly mineralized in the southern part of the Chukchi Sea, whereas CHO were largely used as source of energy for higher trophic levels in the northern part of the Chukchi Sea. Specifically, the bioavailable fraction of POM in the northern part of the Chukchi Sea was higher than it was in the other parts. The findings indicate that increasing meltwater and a low nutrient supply lead to smaller cell sizes of phytoplankton and their taxa (flagellate and green algae) with more CHO and a negative effect on the total concentration of POM. However, in terms of bioavailability (food utilization), which determines the rate at which digested food is used by consumers, potentially available food could have positive effects on ecosystem functioning.

Ocean‐driven basal melting of Amundsen Sea ice shelves has triggered acceleration, thinning, and grounding line retreat on many West Antarctic outlet glaciers. Here we present the first year‐long (2014) record of basal melt rate at sub‐weekly resolution from a location on the outer Pine Island Ice Shelf. Adjustment of the upper thermocline to local wind forced variability in the vertical Ekman velocity is the dominant control on basal melting at weekly to monthly timescales. Atmosphere–ice–ocean surface heat fluxes or changes in advection of modified Circumpolar Deep Water play no discernible role at these timescales. We propose that during other years, a deepening of the thermocline in Pine Island Bay driven by longer timescale processes may have suppressed the impact of local wind forcing on high‐frequency upper thermocline height variability and basal melting. This highlights the complex interplay between the different processes and their timescales that set the basal melt rate beneath Pine Island Ice Shelf.

First-year ice has replaced multiyear ice in the Northern Sea Route area since 2008. In this area, sea ice survival during summer substantially depends on first-year ice thickness at melt onset, and thus monitoring of first-year ice thickness in the freezing period is a key to forecasting sea ice distributions in the following summer. In this paper we introduce a new algorithm to estimate flat first-year ice draft using brightness temperature data measured by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2). The algorithm uses a gradient ratio (GR) of 18- and 36-GHz vertically polarized brightness temperatures based on decreases in sea ice emissivity in higher AMSR2 frequency channels with thermodynamic growth associated with an increase in volume scattering. Such spectral characteristics of the emissivity are examined by comparing GR values with flat first-year ice draft extracted by mode values of in situ draft data measured by a moored ice profiling sonar. The accuracy of the daily draft estimated from GR values after applying proper noise filters is about 10 cm for a draft range of 0.4–1.2 m.

The vertical pattern of pelagic ciliate communities was observed at eight layers in the Chukchi Sea and the northern Bering Sea of the western Arctic Ocean during the summer sea-ice reduction period (August 5 to August 24, 2016). A total of 44 ciliate species were identified, with seven species dominated the communities in the water column. Multivariate and univariate analyses demonstrated that: (1) community structures of ciliates vary significantly among eight water depths; (2) variations in the vertical distribution of ciliates were significantly correlated with changes in physicochemical variables, especially the ammonia; (3) the distributions of the three dominant species were significantly and positively related to the chlorophyll a and ammonia concentrations; and (4) species richness and abundance were significantly and positively correlated with the concentrations of ammonia and chlorophyll a. These results suggest that pelagic ciliates may reflect vertical variations in the water quality status of western Arctic ecosystems.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the fluorescence properties of dissolved organic matter (FDOM) were investigated using parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) for seawater samples collected in the Chukchi Sea (65°N–78°N, 170°E–160°W) during summer 2017. River water (friver) and sea-ice meltwater (fsea ice melt) fractions were also derived using oxygen isotopes ratios (δ18O) to examine the influence of sea ice on riverine DOM. The spatial distributions of friver, riverine DOC, and the humic-like fluorescent component (C1) showed an overall south-north gradient, with higher values in the northern Chukchi Sea in summer. Pronounced accumulation of river water and riverine DOM was also observed in the anticyclonic Beaufort Gyre at the eastern stations of the northern Chukchi Sea in association with a long water residence time. Estimated riverine DOC in the surface layer accounted for 27 ± 9% (range: 17–47%) of the total DOC in the southern Chukchi Sea, and 39 ± 6% (range: 32–49%) and 31 ± 4% (range: 25–37%) for the eastern and western stations of the northern Chukchi Sea, respectively. Humic-like C1 showed negative and positive relationships with sea-ice meltwater-corrected salinity (Ssim_corrected) and friver, respectively. However, Arctic river waters with distinct humic-like C1 characteristics were likely mixed in the northern Chukchi Sea. The vertical distributions of riverine DOC, humic-like C1 fluorescence, and friver generally decreased with water depth, reflecting the strong influence of riverine DOM in the surface layer. Although riverine DOM and friver were dominant in the upper 50 m of the water column, they were also pronounced in the upper halocline (50–200 m), in which fsea ice melt dropped below zero. Our results indicated the existence of brine rejected from growing sea ice, and that sea-ice formation was a key factor for the transport of riverine DOM to the upper halocline layer in the northern Chukchi Sea.
