This study investigated the association between relative earnings and depressive symptoms among 578 married women from dual-earning households. We also examined the moderating role of both spouses' traditional gender role attitudes. Women's relative earnings in their households did not directly predict their depressive symptoms. However, there was a significant three-way interaction effect of women's relative earnings and both spouses' traditional gender role attitudes on women's depressive symptoms. Particularly, women with considerably stronger-than-average traditional gender role attitudes reported more depressive symptoms when their relative earnings were greater and when their husbands showed strong traditional gender role attitudes. However, women holding even slightly weaker-than-average traditional gender role attitudes reported significantly fewer depressive symptoms as their relative earnings increased, even when their husbands showed strong traditional gender role attitudes. These results indicate that traditional wives with high relative earnings may feel threatened by the discrepancy between their values (traditional gender role attitudes) and behaviors (high relative earnings), especially when their husbands hold strong traditional gender role attitudes.

This study examined the relationship between spousal levels of materialism and marital satisfaction while considering the moderating role of wives' relative earnings, using the Actor Partner Interdependence Model (APIM). A total of 301 South Korean heterosexual married couples completed the survey. We found that wives' materialism had actor and partner effects on both spouses' marital satisfaction. Husbands' level of materialism was not associated with their own marital satisfaction but had a positive association with wives' marital satisfaction. The interaction between wives' materialism and their relative earnings significantly predicted both spouses' marital satisfaction. That is, the negative relationship between wives' materialism and both spouses' marital satisfaction was stronger when wives' relative earnings were higher. However, wives' materialism was not related to either partner's marital satisfaction when wives' relative earnings were low. These results can be illuminated by gender differences in mating preferences, and characteristics of materialists and South Korean culture. Previous research on culture and emotion regulation has focused primarily on comparing participants from individualistic and collectivistic backgrounds (e.g., European Americans vs. Asians/Asian Americans). However, ethnic groups that are equally individualistic or collectivistic can still vary notably in cultural norms and practices regarding emotion regulation. The present study examined the association between expressive suppression and well-being in two collectivistic ethnic groups (i.e., Chinese Americans and Mexican Americans). Results indicated that suppression of positive emotions was related to lower hedonic and eudaimonic well-being among Mexican Americans but not among Chinese Americans. Moreover, post hoc analysis revealed that Mexican Americans with a stronger collective identity reported lower eudaimonic well-being when suppressing positive emotions than Mexican Americans with a weaker collective identity. Suppression of negative emotions, by contrast, was unrelated to hedonic and eudaimonic well-being for both ethnic groups. Overall, our findings underscore the importance of taking into account the role that culture and the characteristics of emotion (e.g., valence) may play in the link between emotion regulation and well-being.

우리나라의 성형에 대한 높은 인기에도 불구하고 이를설명하는 연구는 한정적이다. 본 연구는 성형이나 외모관리에 높은 관심을 보이는 성인 초기 여성을 대상으로 이들이 성형에 대해 수용적인 태도를 갖게 하는 요인으로 물질주의와 외모주의 가치 변인의 종단적 역할을 연구하기 위해 실시되었다. 구체적으로 물질주의와 외모주의, 그리고 외모주의와 성형수용태도는 서로를 양방향으로 예측할 것이라 가정하였다. 이때 물질주의의 증가는 외모주의의 증가를 통해 성형수용태도의 증가를 예측할 것이라 가정하였다. 서울 및 수도권 18-31세 성인 초기 여성 452명을 대상으로 6개월 간격으로 세 번의 설문을 실시하였고, 자기회귀 교차지연 모형으로 종단적 매개효과를 분석하였다. 그 결과 물질주의, 외모주의, 그리고 성형수용태도는 18개월 동안 비교적 안정적으로 유지되었고 물질주의 증가는 외모주의와 성형수용 태도의 증가를 예측하였고, 외모주의 증가는 성형수용태도와 물질주의 증가를 예측했다. 또한 물질주의 증가는 외모주의의 증가를 매개로 성형수용태도의 증가를 예측하였다. 본 연구는 물질주의와 외모주의의 가치 변인으로 성인초기 여성들의 성형에 대한 높은 관심을 설명한 의의가 있다.

이 연구는 초기 성인기 여성을 대상으로 외로움과 통제감, 폭식행동의 관계를 종단적으로 분석하였다. 구체적으로 외로움, 통제감 그리고 폭식행동은 연구기간인 2년 동안 안정적으로 지속되며 서로를 양방향으로 예측할 것이라 가정하였다. 이때 외로움의 증가는 통제감의 감소를 통해 폭식행동의 증가를 예측할 것이라 가정하였다. 가설 검증을 위해 서울 및 수도권 소재 대학에서 18-31세 초기 성인기 여성 570명을 대상으로 6개월을 주기로 2년 동안 4회 설문을 실시하고, 자기회귀 교차지연 모형을 통해 종단적 매개효과를 분석하였다. 그 결과 외로움, 통제감, 폭식행동은 2년 동안 안정적으로 유지되었고 외로움과 폭식행동은 서로 예측하지 않았으며, 외로움과 통제감은 서로 부적으로 예측하였고 통제감은 폭식행동을 예측하였으나 폭식행동은 통제감을 예측하지 않는 일방향적 관계가 검증되었다. 외로움이 통제감을 매개로 폭식행동을 예측하는 종단적 매개효과는 검증되었으나 폭식행동이 통제감을 매개로 외로움을 예측하는 종단적 매개효과는 검증되지 않았다. 이 연구의 결과가 갖는 학문적 의의와 상담장면에서의 함의를 논의에 제시하였다.

물질주의 가치 추구는 한국인의 정신건강 및 심리적 안녕감을 이해하는 데 중요한 변인일 수 있다. 이 연구는 물질주의 연구를 활성화하고 신뢰로운 측정을 하고자 물질주의 가치 척도로 가장 자주 사용되는 Richins와 Dawson(1992)의 물질주의 가치 척도(Material Values Scale)를 한국어로 번안하여 타당화하기 위해 실시하였다. 연구 1은 번안한 한국판 물질주의척도의 요인구조를 확인하고 신뢰도 및 타당도를 검증하였다. 이를 위해 대학생 417명(표본 1)을 대상으로 확인적 요인분석을 실시하였고, 그 결과 원척도의 요인과 동일한 3요인을 확인하였다. 원척도가 제시한 하위요인을 한국어로 번역하여 성공판단, 소유중심, 행복추구라 명명하였다. 이 과정에서 요인부하량이 낮은 3개의 문항은 물질주의 가치 척도의 다른 언어로의 타당화 연구를 참조하여 삭제하였고, 총 15문항으로 한국판 물질주의척도를 구성하였다. 연구 2에서는 표본 1과 유사한 성격을 지닌 대학생 650명(표본 2)을 대상으로 한국판 물질주의척도를 검증한 결과 수렴 및 변별타당도, 동시타당도, 예측타당도가 양호한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 또한 경제활동을 하는 직장인 392명(표본 3)과 대학생(표본 2)을 대상으로 다집단 요인분석을 실시한 결과 한국판 물질주의척도를 대학생과 직장인에게 동일하게 사용할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 직장인(표본 3)을 대상으로 검증한 결과 예측타당도가 양호한 것으로 나타났다. 여자 대학생 408명(표본 4)을 대상으로 6개월 간격으로 설문을 실시한 결과 검사-재검사 신뢰도 또한 양호한 수준으로 확인되었다. 이러한 결과는 한국판 물질주의척도가 성인을 대상으로 한 개인의 물질주의 가치 수준을 신뢰롭고 타당하게 평가하는 도구임을 의미한다.

본 연구는 섭식장애 유병률이 가장 높게 나타나는 초기 성인기 여성을 대상으로 이들의 이상섭식 행동과 물질주의 그리고 기존 미디어 소비에 비해 적극적이지만 병리적인 미디어 소비 형태인 연예인 숭배와의 관련성을 검증하기 위해 실시되었다. 구체적으로 본 연구에서는 초기 성인기 여성의 물질주의 추구와 이상섭식행동의 관계에서 연예인 숭배와 외모에 대한 사회문화적 규범의 내재화가 순차적으로 매개할 것이라 가정하였다. 이를 검증하기 위해 서울 소재 대학에서 모집한 초기 성인기 여성 601명을 대상으로 설문을 실시하였고 그 결과 본 연구의 가설은 지지되었다. 초기 성인기 여성의 물질주의 추구 성향이 높을수록 연예인을 병리적으로 추구하는 경향성이 커지고, 병리적 연예인 숭배 경향성이 클수록 외모에 대한 사회문화적 규범을 더 내재화하여 결국 사회문화적으로 인정받는 규범으로서의 외모에 도달하기 위해 자신의 신체를 통제하려는 시도인 이상섭식행동을 더 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 초기 성인기 여성의 이상섭식행동을 사회문화적 변인인 물질주의와 연예인 숭배를 통해 설명하여 이상섭식행동을 여성 개인 내적 문제로 접근하기보다 하나의 사회문화적 현상으로 접근한 의의가 있다.

Purpose This study aimed to identify the actor and partner effects of daily stress and dyadic coping on marital satisfaction using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediational Model (APIeM). Methods Participants were 314 couples who met the study's eligibility criteria. Data were collected from March to April 2016 through apartment and cooperative company communities in Seoul. Two APIeMs of positive and negative dyadic coping were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 and Mplus 7.4. All measures were self-administered. Results Daily stress and positive and negative dyadic coping in both spouses had direct actor effects on their marital satisfaction. Daily stress in both spouses had an indirect actor effect on marital satisfaction through their positive and negative dyadic coping. The husband's daily stress had an indirect partner effect on the wife's marital satisfaction through his positive dyadic coping, while the wife's positive dyadic coping had a direct partner effect on the husband's marital satisfaction. The husband's daily stress had an indirect partner effect on the wife's marital satisfaction through his negative dyadic coping, while the wife's negative dyadic coping had a direct partner effect on the husband's marital satisfaction. Conclusion Dyadic coping is an effective way to deal with couple's daily hassles as it increase their satisfaction in marriage.

The present paper addresses a deficit in research on indirect and direct sources of threat to meta-stereotypes in strategic outgroup helping. In Study 1 (N = 70), where the source of threat to participants’ own religious identities was directly relevant, offers of help were made only if the available forms of help were pertinent to negating the negative religious stereotypes or if such offers could put the stereotypes in favorable light. This pattern also held in Study 2 (N = 97), where the source of threat to participants’ religious identities was peripheral and therefore indirect. Taken together, it appears that it is not so much the directness of sources of threat to meta-stereotypes as the possibility of meaningfully rebutting the negative stereotype or presenting it in favorable terms that matters in strategic outgroup helping.

In two studies, we examined whether (a) conceptions of Jesus would differ between Koreans and Americans, and whether (b) national differences in self-reported personality and well-being are mediated by the cultural norm for personality and well-being. Because there is only one Jesus, different conceptions held by Koreans and Americans are likely to reflect cultural construction processes. In Study 1, we asked Korean and American participants to engage in a free association task with Jesus as a target. Americans associated Jesus with primarily positive connotations (“awesome”) and rarely with negative connotations (“pain”), whereas Koreans associated Jesus with both positive and negative connotations. In Study 2, we asked Korean and American participants to rate Jesus and themselves using personality and well-being scales. Americans rated both Jesus and themselves as more extraverted, agreeable, conscientious, open, and happier than did Koreans. Most important, national differences in self-reported agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, and happiness were partially mediated by conceptions of Jesus.

In this study, the authors compared the behavioral development of 4- to 8-year-old South Korean children placed in institutional care ( n = 230) or adopted internationally ( n = 382), with age of entry, parental status, reason for institutionalization, and postinstitutionalization parental contact as risk factors for institutionalized children. There was a placement effect of adoption and support for age of entry and parental status as risk factors. Relinquished children institutionalized before age 2 fared the poorest across groups. Children institutionalized after age 2 with deceased/unknown parents fared best among institutionalized children. Institutionalization due to family disruption was a risk for relinquished children only, whereas parental contact did not increase the risk for behavioral problems. The unique sample population and other limitations are discussed.

This study investigated the roles of racial and ethnic socialization in the link between racial discrimination and school adjustment among a sample of 233 adopted Korean American adolescents from White adoptive families and 155 nonadopted Korean American adolescents from immigrant Korean families. Adopted Korean American adolescents reported lower levels of racial discrimination, racial socialization, and ethnic socialization than nonadopted Korean American adolescents. However, racial discrimination was negatively related to school belonging and school engagement, and ethnic socialization was positively related to school engagement for both groups. Racial socialization also had a curvilinear relationship with school engagement for both groups. A moderate level of racial socialization predicted positive school engagement, whereas low and high levels of racial socialization predicted negative school engagement. Finally, ethnic socialization moderated the link between racial discrimination and school belonging, which differed between groups. In particular, ethnic socialization exacerbated the relations between racial discrimination and school belonging for adopted Korean American adolescents, whereas ethnic socialization buffered this link for nonadopted Korean American adolescents. The findings illustrate the complex relationship between racial and ethnic socialization, racial discrimination, and school adjustment.

우리사회 만연한 물질주의의 폐해에 대한 높은 우려에도 불구하고 개인의 물질주의 가치 추구와 정신건강과의 관계를 탐색한 국내 연구는 극히 제한적이다. 본 연구는 성인기 초기 여성을 대상으로 물질주의 가치 추구와 이상섭식행동 간의 관계를 연구하였다. 구체적으로 성인 초기 여성이 물질주의를 추구하는 경향이 높을수록 외모가 성공의 중요한 기준이 되는 외모주의를 추구할 가능성도 높아질 것이라 예상하였고, 외모주의가 높은 여성의 경우 타인의 외모와 자신의 외모를 비교하는 사회비교를 더 빈번히 할 것이라 예측하였다. 이러한 외모에 대한 사회비교는 여성이 자신의 신체에 더욱 불만족하게 되어 결국 그 불만족에 대한 부적응적인 해결 방식으로 이상섭식행동을 보일 것이라 가정하였다. 가설 검증을 위해 서울 및 수도권 소재 대학에서 모집한 성인 초기 여성 569명을 대상으로 설문을 실시하여 물질주의와 이상섭식행동에서 외모주의와 사회비교, 신체불만족의 매개효과를 구조방정식을 통해 분석하였다. 그 결과, 물질주의는 외모주의를 완전매개로 이상섭식행동을 설명하는 동시에, 물질주의와 이상섭식행동의 관계에서 외모주의와 사회비교, 신체불만족이 순차적으로 완전매개하는 것을 발견하였다. 본 연구결과가 갖는 학술 및 상담 실무에의 의의와 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 논의에 포함하였다.

본 연구는 이성 관계에서 개인의 정서조절과 관계만족의 관계에서 갈등상황 시 남녀가 서로 상호작용하여 나타내는 공동대처(dyadic coping)방략의 매개효과를 검증하기 위해 실시되었다. 이를 위해 이성교제 중인 미혼 남녀 298쌍(총 596명)을 대상으로 개인의 정서조절 능력, 적극적 문제해결시도의 긍정적 공동대처 방략, 부정적 감정 및 행동표출과 회피의 부정적 공동대처 방략, 그리고 관계만족에 관한 설문을 실시했고 자기-상대방 상호의존 모형(Actor-Partner Interdependence Model: APIM)을 이용해 가설을 검증했다. 그 결과 첫째 남녀 모두 자신의 적극적 문제해결시도는 자신의 정서조절 능력과 관계만족을 부분 매개하는 것으로 나타난 반면, 상대방 효과는 유의하지 않았다. 둘째, 남녀 모두 자신의 부정적 감정 및 행동표출은 자신의 정서조절과 관계만족을 부분 매개하는 동시에 3 모형 중 유일하게 상대방 효과가 나타났다. 구체적으로, 여성의 부정적 감정 및 행동표출은 남성의 정서조절과 남성의 관계만족을, 남성의 정서조절과 여성의 관계만족을 부분 매개했으며 여성의 정서조절과 남성의 관계만족을 부분 매개했다. 마지막으로, 남녀 모두 자신의 회피는 자신의 정서조절 능력과 관계만족을 부분 매개하였으나 상대방 효과는 유의하지 않았다. 연구 결과의 의의와 추후 연구를 위한 제언을 논의에 포함했다.

This study examined religious identity as a mediator and moderator between religious socialization by parents, peers, and religious mentors and psychosocial functioning (i.e., social competence, internalizing and externalizing behavior problems) among 155 Korean American adolescents. Religious socialization by parents and peers were positively associated with adolescents' religious identity and social competence. Religious identity fully mediated the relationship between religious socialization by parents and social competence, and partially mediated the relationship between religious socialization by peers and social competence. A competing model with religious identity as a moderator found adolescents with low religious identity showed significantly more externalizing behavior problems when they received more religious socialization from parents.
