The resistance of a heavy metal can be modulated by an adjacent magnetic material through the combined effects of the spin Hall effect, inverse spin Hall effect, and dissipation of the spin accumulation at the interface. This phenomenon is known as spin Hall magnetoresistance. The dissipation of the spin accumulation can occur via various mechanisms, with spin-transfer torque being the most extensively studied. In this work, we report the observation of spin Hall magnetoresistance at the interface between platinum and an insulating altermagnetic candidate, Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$. Our findings reveal that this heterostructure exhibits a relatively large spin Hall magnetoresistance signal, which is anisotropic with respect to the crystal orientation of the current channel. We explore and rule out several potential explanations for this anisotropy and propose that our results may be understood in the context of the anisotropic altermagnetic ordering of Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$.

The discovery of superconductivity under high pressure in Ruddlesden-Popper phases of bulk nickelates has sparked great interest in stabilizing ambient pressure superconductivity in thin-film form using epitaxial strain. Recently, signs of superconductivity have been observed in compressively strained bilayer nickelate thin films with an onset temperature exceeding 40 K, albeit with broad and two-step-like transitions. Here, we report intrinsic superconductivity and normal-state transport properties in compressively strained La$_2$PrNi$_2$O$_7$ thin films, achieved through a combination of isovalent Pr substitution, growth optimization, and precision ozone annealing. The superconducting onset occurs above 48 K, with zero resistance reached above 30 K, and the critical current density at 1.4 K is 100-fold larger than previous reports. The normal-state resistivity exhibits quadratic temperature dependence indicative of Fermi liquid behaviour, and other phenomenological similarities to transport in overdoped cuprates suggest parallels in their emergent properties., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in bulk La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under high hydrostatic pressure and, more recently, biaxial compression in epitaxial thin films has ignited significant interest in understanding the interplay between atomic and electronic structure in these compounds. Subtle changes in the nickel-oxygen bonding environment are thought to be key drivers for stabilizing superconductivity, but specific details of which bonds and which modifications are most relevant remains so far unresolved. While direct, atomic-scale structural characterization under hydrostatic pressure is beyond current experimental capabilities, static stabilization of strained La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ films provides a platform well-suited to investigation with new picometer-resolution electron microscopy methods. Here, we use multislice electron ptychography to directly measure the atomic-scale structural evolution of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ thin films across a wide range of biaxial strains tuned via substrate. By resolving both the cation and oxygen sublattices, we study strain-dependent evolution of atomic bonds, providing the opportunity to isolate and disentangle the effects of specific structural motifs for stabilizing superconductivity. We identify the lifting of crystalline symmetry through modification of the nickel-oxygen octahedral distortions under compressive strain as a key structural ingredient for superconductivity. Rather than previously supposed $c$-axis compression, our results highlight the importance of in-plane biaxial compression in superconducting thin films, which suggests an alternative -- possibly cuprate-like -- understanding of the electronic structure. Identifying local regions of inhomogeneous oxygen stoichiometry and high internal strain near crystalline defects, we suggest potential pathways for improving the sharpness and temperature of the superconducting transition., Comment: 4 figures, 3 tables, 15 supplemental figures

The dimensionality of vortical structures has recently been extended beyond two dimensions, providing higher-order topological characteristics and robustness for high-capacity information processing and turbulence control. The generation of high-dimensional vortical structures has mostly been demonstrated in classical systems through the complex interference of fluidic, acoustic, or electromagnetic waves. However, natural materials rarely support three- or higher-dimensional vortical structures and their physical interactions. Here, we present a high-dimensional gradient thickness optical cavity (GTOC) in which the optical coupling of planar metal-dielectric multilayers implements topological interactions across multiple dimensions. Topological interactions in high-dimensional GTOC construct non-trivial topological phases, which induce high-dimensional vortical structures in generalized parameter space in three, four dimensions, and beyond. These emergent high-dimensional vortical structures are observed under electro-optic tomography as optical vortex dynamics in two-dimensional real-space, employing the optical thicknesses of the dielectric layers as synthetic dimensions. We experimentally demonstrate emergent vortical structures, optical vortex lines and vortex rings, in a three-dimensional generalized parameter space and their topological transitions. Furthermore, we explore four-dimensional vortical structures, termed optical vortex sheets, which provide the programmability of real-space optical vortex dynamics. The stability of the double-layered antiferromagnets and their magnonic properties are investigated by considering two model systems, the linear chain (LC) and more complex chain of railroad trestle (RT) geometry, and a real example of chromium nitride CrN. The spin-paired order ($\cdots{+}{+}{-}{-}\cdots$) in LC requires an alternation of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions, while analogous spin-paired order in RT can be stable even for all magnetic exchange interactions being AFM. The rock-salt structure of CrN evokes clear magnetic frustration since Cr atoms in face-centered cubic lattice form links to twelve nearest neighbors all equivalent and AFM. Nonetheless, the magnetostructural transition to an orthorhombically distorted phase below $T_\text{N} = 287~\text{K}$ leads to a diversification of Cr-Cr links, which suppresses the frustration and allows for stable double-layered AFM order of CrN. Based on $\textit{ab initio}$ calculated exchange parameters, the magnon spectra and temperature evolution of ordered magnetic moments are derived., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

We demonstrate efficient edge couplers by fabricating a 3D mode size converter on a lithium niobate-on-insulator photonic platform. The 3D mode size converter is fabricated using an etching process that employs a Si external mask to provide height variation and adjust the width variation through tapering patterns via lithography. The measured edge coupling efficiency with a 3D mode size converter was approximately 1.16 dB/facet for the TE mode and approximately 0.71 dB/facet for the TM mode at a wavelength of 1550 nm., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

There is a space of uncertainty in the modeling of vehicular dynamics of autonomous systems due to noise in sensor readings, environmental factors or modeling errors. We present Requiem, a software-only, blackbox approach that exploits this space in a stealthy manner causing target systems, e.g., unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to significantly deviate from their mission parameters. Our system achieves this by modifying sensor values, all while avoiding detection by onboard anomaly detectors (hence, "stealthy"). The Requiem framework uses a combination of multiple deep learning models (that we refer to as "surrogates" and "spoofers") coupled with extensive, realistic simulations on a software-in-the-loop quadrotor UAV system. Requiem makes no assumptions about either the (types of) sensors or the onboard state estimation algorithm(s) -- it works so long as the latter is "learnable". We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system using various attacks across multiple missions as well as multiple sets of statistical analyses. We show that Requiem successfully exploits the modeling errors (i.e., causes significant deviations from planned mission parameters) while remaining stealthy (no detection even after {tens of meters of deviations}) and are generalizable (Requiem has potential to work across different attacks and sensor types).

This report examines the impact of taking a math course in twelfth grade on L.A. Unified students' science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) college course taking and academic achievement. We also investigate whether particular types of math courses (for example, Calculus or Statistics) are especially beneficial for students' postsecondary success.

In speaker verification systems, the utilization of short utterances presents a persistent challenge, leading to performance degradation primarily due to insufficient phonetic information to characterize the speakers. To overcome this obstacle, we propose a novel structure, MR-RawNet, designed to enhance the robustness of speaker verification systems against variable duration utterances using raw waveforms. The MR-RawNet extracts time-frequency representations from raw waveforms via a multi-resolution feature extractor that optimally adjusts both temporal and spectral resolutions simultaneously. Furthermore, we apply a multi-resolution attention block that focuses on diverse and extensive temporal contexts, ensuring robustness against changes in utterance length. The experimental results, conducted on VoxCeleb1 dataset, demonstrate that the MR-RawNet exhibits superior performance in handling utterances of variable duration compared to other raw waveform-based systems., Comment: 5 pages, accepted by Interspeech 2024

We show that magnetic insulators with a collinear and compensated order can exhibit a thermal Hall effect even at zero magnetic field if they have altermagnetic symmetries. We predict a finite thermal Hall conductivity vector $\boldsymbol{\kappa}_\text{H}$ for a rutile-inspired effective spin model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Within the linear spin-wave theory, we identify two magnon branches that carry identical Berry curvature and give rise to a finite $\boldsymbol{\kappa}_\text{H}$, which can be controlled by the N\'eel vector orientation and by strain. The thermal Hall response is further complemented with a spin Nernst response to contrast spin and heat transport in altermagnetic insulators with those in ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Our results establish the crystal thermal Hall effect of magnons and we discuss material candidates for experimental realization, such as MnF$_2$, CoF$_2$, and NiF$_2$., Comment: 23 pages

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) carry transverse optical spin within the evanescent field, which has enabled the demonstration of various chiral light-matter interactions in classical and quantum systems. To achieve high spin selectivity in the interactions, the elliptical polarization of the evanescent field should be made circular, but the engineering principle of the degree of circular polarization (DOCP) of SPPs has been lacking. In this study, we theoretically and numerically investigate the scaling behavior of the DOCP of the SPP field with respect to the modal effective refractive index (neff). The DOCP of the SPP field exhibits power-law scalability to the effective refractive index in the 1D layered system, regardless of the material, structural geometry, and excitation wavelength. The power-law scalability is also confirmed in 2D waveguide structures for in-plane and out-of-plane SPP fields, but the scaling exponents vary depending on the distance from the waveguide boundaries by the reduced symmetry of the given system. Due to Lorentz reciprocity, the power-law scalability can be extended to the coupling directionality of chiral emitters towards the plasmonic waveguide. To this end, we propose a chiral photonic platform for enhanced light-valley interaction, which utilizes simultaneous enhancement of the DOCP and coupling directionality. An incident SPP can excite a chiral emitter with high spin selectivity that unidirectionally couples the emitted light into the plasmonic waveguide depending on the valley polarization of excitons in 2D material. Our work provides a ground rule for designing chiral nanophotonic systems and paves the way for the exploration of scale-free phenomena of electromagnetic waves.

Sequence of numbers generated by the recurrence relation based on the Collatz conjecture is investigated. An arithmetic operation on the Collatz conjecture is called descending operation, and ascending operation is carried out reversely to the descending operation. Study on the 3x+1 problem against every integer is relevant to that of descending operation against every odd. Any odds can be generated by ascending operations against odds not multiple of 3, and vise versa. Ascending operations against an odd not a multiple of 3 can generate infinite number of odds in the next generation. The odds multiple of 3 are terminal numbers of sequences that no further ascending operations are possible. Descending operations against the odds 1,5,21,.. reach 1, and otherwise reach the odds greater than or equal to 5. No two odds except 1 in each sequence are the same, and the each descending sequence is unique. Every descending sequence can start from terminal numbers, and reaches ultimately the origin of 1 as indicated by the Collatz conjecture. Sequences of odds in the same pattern ignoring the sizes of the odds are generated by ascending operations with the same number of doubling operations against the odds in modular arithmetic., Comment: 16 pages

A method to identify a quantum vortex in a three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii simulation has been developed. A quantum vortex was identified by the use of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hessian of the mass density, together with a condition to distinguish a point to constitute a swirling vortex from other confusing data points. This method has been verified to identify vortex axes in a Gross-Pitaevskii simulation appropriately, being useful to elucidate various statistics associated with turbulent quantum vortices. This method provides us with a unified approach to studying vortex statistics in the turbulence of both classic and quantum fluids. Our study reveals that the maximum radius of a swirling region of a quantum vortex can be as large as sixty times the healing length. The characterization of the vortex core radius relative to the healing length is reported for the first time in this paper. Furthermore, the geometrical natures of vortex axes such as the probability density function of the curvature are characterized by the healing length.

We study various kinds of Grassmannians or Lagrangian Grassmannians over $\mathbb{R}$, $\mathbb{C}$ or $\mathbb{H}$, all of which can be expressed as $\mathbb{G}/\mathbb{P}$ where $\mathbb{G}$ is a classical group and $\mathbb{P}$ is a parabolic subgroup of $\mathbb{G}$ with abelian unipotent radical. The same Grassmannians can also be realized as (classical) compact symmetric spaces $G/K$. We give explicit generators and relations for the de Rham cohomology rings of $\mathbb{G}/\mathbb{P}\cong G/K$. At the same time we describe certain filtered deformations of these rings, related to Clifford algebras and spin modules. While the cohomology rings are of our primary interest, the filtered setting of $K$-invariants in the Clifford algebra actually provides a more conceptual framework for the results we obtain., Comment: 46 pages
