Understanding causal relationships between evolution and ocean oxygenation hinges on reliable reconstructions of marine oxygen levels, typically from redox-sensitive geochemical proxies. Here, we develop a proxy, using dolomite U-Pb geochronology, to reconstruct seawater U/Pb ratios. Dolomite samples consistently give U-Pb dates and initial 207Pb/206Pb ratios lower than expected from their stratigraphic ages. These observations are explained by resetting of the U-Pb system long after deposition; the magnitude of deviations from expected initial 207Pb/206Pb are a function of the redox-sensitive U/Pb ratios during deposition. Reconstructed initial U/Pb ratios increased notably in the late-Paleozoic, reflecting an increase in oxygenation of marine environments at that time. This timeline is consistent with documented shifts in some other redox proxies and supports evolution-driven mechanisms for the oxygenation of late-Paleozoic marine environments, as well as suggestions that early animals thrived in oceans that on long time scales were oxygen-limited compared to today.

Despite being a prominent continental-scale feature, the late Mesoproterozoic North American Midcontinent Rift did not result in the break-up of Laurentia, and subsequently underwent structural inversion. The timing of inversion is critical for constraining far-field effects of orogenesis and processes associated with the rift’s failure. The Keweenaw fault in northern Michigan (USA) is a major thrust structure associated with rift inversion; it places ca. 1093 Ma rift volcanic rocks atop the post-rift Jacobsville Formation, which is folded in its footwall. Previous detrital zircon (DZ) U-Pb geochronology conducted by laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) assigned a ca. 950 Ma maximum age to the Jacobsville Formation and led researchers to interpret its deposition and deformation as postdating the ca. 1090–980 Ma Grenvillian Orogeny. In this study, we reproduced similar DZ dates using LA-ICP-MS and then dated 19 of the youngest DZ grains using high-precision chemical abrasion–isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS). The youngest DZ dated by CA-ID-TIMS at 992.51 ± 0.64 Ma (2σ) redefines the maximum depositional age of the Jacobsville Formation and overlaps with a U-Pb LA-ICP-MS date of 985.5 ± 35.8 Ma (2σ) for late-kinematic calcite veins within the brecciated Keweenaw fault zone. Collectively, these data are interpreted to constrain deposition of the Jacobsville Formation and final rift inversion to have occurred during the 1010–980 Ma Rigolet Phase of the Grenvillian Orogeny, following an earlier phase of Ottawan inversion. Far-field deformation propagated >500 km into the continental interior during the Ottawan and Rigolet phases of the Grenvillian Orogeny.

In the Altai Accretionary Wedge, several periods of Barrovian‐ and Buchan‐type metamorphic cycles were dated from Ordovician to Permian. However, the timing and link between these cycles are not clear, and their causes are debated. In order to contribute to the understanding of Barrovian‐ to Buchan‐type evolution of the accretionary wedges, we studied an area composed of three parallel belts in the easternmost extremity of the Hovd domain located in Mongolian Altai Zone: garnet gneiss in the north, garnet–staurolite–kyanite schist overprinted by ±sillimanite±cordierite±andalusite‐bearing assemblages in the centre and garnet–sillimanite gneiss in the south. Petrography, garnet zoning and thermodynamic modelling indicate that the garnet gneiss from the northern belt records burial from ~510°C and ~3–4 kbar to ~600°C and ~5 kbar, followed by heating to ~660°C and decompression to ~4.5 kbar. The garnet–staurolite–kyanite schist from the central belt records burial from ~550°C and ~3–4.5 kbar to ~640–680°C and ~7 kbar, followed by decompression to the sillimanite stability field at ~650°C and ~6 kbar. Crystallization of cordierite, andalusite, late muscovite and chlorite in some samples indicates cooling on decompression to ~540°C and ~3.5 kbar. In the southern gneiss belt, the garnet–sillimanite gneiss with almost unzoned garnet suggests re‐equilibration at ~6 kbar and ~710°C. In situ U–Pb monazite and xenotime dating carried out inclusions in porphyroblasts and matrix grains revealed Carboniferous and Permian ages. The monazite and xenotime from gneisses of the northern and southern belts record Carboniferous and Permian ages, which are interpreted as Carboniferous crystallization at c. 347 Ma associated with metamorphic peak, followed by Permian (re)crystallization at c. 300 and 283 Ma. In the central belt, rare Carboniferous xenotime grains in a garnet–staurolite–kyanite–andalusite–muscovite schist indicate a possible Carboniferous age of the prograde metamorphism. Predominant ages between c. 280 and 260 Ma recorded by monazite are interpreted as a result of complete recrystallization during an LP metamorphic overprint. The Carboniferous ages from the gneisses can be interpreted as constraining the timing of the exhumation of deep crustal rocks to shallow crustal levels. This event corresponds to the formation of crustal‐scale migmatite‐magmatite domes in the Mongolian Altai Zone. The prograde Barrovian assemblages in the central schist belt are interpreted as having formed contemporaneously during burial in a synform between the migmatite‐magmatite domes. The Permian ages reflect LP–HT metamorphism, best recorded by the Buchan‐type assemblages in the central schist belt, and are related to massive heat flux from tectonically mobile deep partially molten crust. Correlation with similar Barrovian‐ and Buchan‐type episodes from the Chinese Altai Zone indicates multiple compressional and extensional events in the upper plate accretionary wedge, probably related to retreating and advancing modes of the subduction zone. Although Earth's climate history is best known through marine records, the corresponding continental climatic conditions drive the evolution of terrestrial life. Continental conditions during the latest Miocene are of particular interest because global faunal turnover is roughly synchronous with a period of global glaciation from ∼6.2-5.5 Ma and with the Messinian Salinity Crisis from ∼6.0-5.3 Ma. Despite the climatic and ecological significance of this period, the continental climatic conditions associated with it remain unclear. We address this question using erosion rates of ancient watersheds to constrain Mio-Pliocene climatic conditions in the south-central Andes near 30° S. Our results show two slowdowns in erosion rate, one from ∼6.1-5.2 Ma and another from 3.6 to 3.3 Ma, which we attribute to periods of continental aridity. This view is supported by synchrony with other regional proxies for aridity and with the timing of glacial ‟cold" periods as recorded by marine proxies, such as the M2 isotope excursion. We thus conclude that aridity in the south-central Andes is associated with cold periods at high southern latitudes, perhaps due to a northward migration of the Southern Hemisphere westerlies, which disrupted the South American Low Level Jet that delivers moisture to southeastern South America. Colder glacial periods, and possibly associated reductions in atmospheric CO2, thus seem to be an important driver of Mio-Pliocene ecological transitions in the central Andes. Finally, this study demonstrates that paleo-erosion rates can be a powerful proxy for ancient continental climates that lie beyond the reach of most lacustrine and glacial archives.

Intermontane basins are illuminating stratigraphic archives of uplift, denudation and environmental conditions within the heart of actively growing mountain ranges. Commonly, however, it is difficult to determine from the sedimentary record of an individual basin whether basin formation, aggradation and dissection were controlled primarily by climatic, tectonic or lithological changes and whether these drivers were local or regional in nature. By comparing the onset of deposition, sediment-accumulation rates, incision, deformation, changes in fluvial connectivity and sediment provenance in two interrelated intermontane basins, we can identify diverse controls on basin evolution. Here, we focus on the Casa Grande basin and the adjacent Humahuaca basin along the eastern margin of the Puna Plateau in northwest Argentina. Underpinning this analysis is the robust temporal framework provided by U-Pb geochronology of multiple volcanic ashes and our new magnetostratigraphical record in the Humahuaca basin. Between 3.8 and 0.8 Ma, ~120 m of fluvial and lacustrine sediments accumulated in the Casa Grande basin as the rate of uplift of the Sierra Alta, the bounding range to its east, outpaced fluvial incision by the Río Yacoraite, which presently flows eastward across the range into the Humahuaca basin. During the Late Cretaceous, a magmatic arc extended from the Lesser Caucasus through the northern margin of the Pontides into Srednogorie, Timok, Banat, and Apuseni (ABTS) in the Balkans for a distance of 2700 km. We studied the arc volcanic rocks in three regions in the Western Pontides and reviewed the geological data on the Lesser Caucasus-Pontide-ABTS magmatic arc, which shows several common features. Prior to the start of the arc magmatism, the region underwent uplift and erosion. New and published geochronologic and biostratigraphic data show that magmatism in the Lesser Caucasus-Pontide-ABTS arc started in the Turonian (ca. 93 Ma) peaked in the middle Campanian (80–78 Ma) and became rare and sporadic after the late Campanian (ca. 75 Ma). Magmatism was dominantly calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline and shows typical subduction geochemical signatures. Late Cretaceous volcanism took place in a submarine and extensional environment. In the Lesser Caucasus-Pontide-ABTS belt, the arc volcanic rocks are overlain by Maastrichtian to Palaeocene marine limestones and sandstones, marking the end of the main phase of arc magmatism. However, in the Kefken region in the Western Pontides, Maastrichtian limestone sequence includes a volcanic horizon with a U-Pb zircon age of ca. 71 Ma. The Maastrichtian volcanic rocks show a more varied geochemistry than the older arc volcanic rocks, and include alkaline basalts, calc-alkaline basalts, and adakites. The coeval start of arc magmatism in the 2700-km-long Lesser Caucasus-Pontide-ABTS belt is related to the inception of the Africa-Eurasia convergence at ca. 96 Ma, which is also independently indicated by the beginning of intra-oceanic subduction, inferred from the ages of sub-ophiolite metamorphic rocks in Anatolia. The end of magmatism is linked to a marked decrease in the convergence rate during the Campanian, which was also partitioned between the northern and southern Tethyan subduction zones.
