Jeju Island, located in the northern East China Sea, is experiencing a rapid rise in water temperature due to climate change. This has led to the increased activity of subtropical species and extreme fluctuations in coastal ecosystems, such as macroalgal blooms and coral bleaching. Additionally, the region is experiencing more frequent and intense typhoons. This study investigated the green tides caused by Ulva, particularly Ulva ohnoi, a subtropical species, and the effects of typhoons on these blooms through photographic analysis of the Jeju coastline. The study area was consistently covered by Ulva species every August from 2020 to 2022. Super typhoons struck Jeju Island every September during the study period, with wind speeds exceeding 20 m/s. In 2020 and 2022, the green tides largely dissipated following the typhoons. This ironic outcome highlights how climate-driven increases in subtropical Ulva biomass are being mitigated by the increasing frequency of super typhoons. However, despite the impact of super typhoon Chanthu in September 2021, there was no significant reduction in the Ulva bloom area. This anomaly may be attributable to the dominant easterly wind system in 2021, as the study area faces east, preventing the typhoon from influencing the distribution of Ulva blooms. These findings suggest that the wind intensity and direction of annual typhoons play a critical role in determining the resolution of green tide outbreaks.

In this study, we investigated the physiological and biochemical responses of Ulva species to variation in nutrient availability. Sampling was conducted at two sites on Jeju Island, Korea, namely, Handong, which is close to seven intensive land-based fish farms, and Hado, which has no apparent nearby nutrient sources. We examined the water column nutrient concentrations, nitrate reductase (NR) activity, nitrate uptake efficiency, tissue C, N, and P content, and stable isotope ratios of Ulva species. Water column NH4+, NO3− + NO2−, and PO43− concentrations were significantly higher at Handong than at Hado. NR activity and tissue N content of Ulva species were significantly higher at Handong than at Hado. Notably, nitrate uptake efficiency was inversely proportional to NR activity and tissue N content. The physiological and biochemical responses of Ulva species were closely related to dissolved inorganic nitrogen, which stimulates Ulva species to regulate growth. Additionally, the δ15N values of Ulva tissues at both sites were within the previously reported range for fresh groundwater. Therefore, the main nitrogen source for Ulva growth may be submerged groundwater with high nutrient concentrations. Our results provide invaluable information for estimating dissolved inorganic nitrogen levels in water, which may facilitate development of management policies.

Seagrasses typically display vertical zonation patterns in tropical and temperate areas. In East Asia, three Zostera species (Z. japonica, Z. marina, and Z. caespitosa) are distributed at different water depths, leading to zonation patterns from intertidal to subtidal zones. The present study aimed to determine whether these patterns could be explained by differences in their physiological responses, morphological traits, and meadows architecture caused by depth variations. Intertidal Zostera japonica had the lowest shoot height and blade width and the highest shoot density, while subtidal Z. caespitosa exhibited the largest specific leaf area. Total carotenoid content and the total chlorophyll/total carotenoid ratio were significantly higher in Z. japonica than in Z. marina or Z. caespitosa. The average carbon stable isotope (δ13C) values were significantly less negative in Z. caespitosa than in Z. marina and Z. japonica. The average maximum relative electron transport rate was higher for Z. marina than for Z. japonica and Z. caespitosa, while the maximum quantum yield values were higher for Z caespitosa than for Z. japonica and Z. marina. The non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of Z. japonica extinguished within 5-min following the rapid light curve, indicating that most of its NPQ was energy-dependent quenching (qE). The rapid light curve (RLC) parameters and leaf relaxation after RLC showed that Z. japonica is a high-light adapted species and Z. caespitosa is a low-light adapted one. Additionally, Z. caespitosa showed the lowest dark respiration values and Z. japonica, the highest, suggesting that Z. caespitosa can survive with low photosynthetic activity. These results suggested that interspecific variations in the morphological and physiological characteristics, photosynthetic pigments, and meadows architecture of three Zostera species were associated with vertical zonation patterns and likely explain their patterns.

The community structure and assemblages of marine benthic organisms were investigated in coastal areas near the Jang Bogo Antarctic Research Station in Terra Nova Bay during the 2012-2018 summer seasons. We also examined the recovery pattern of marine benthic organisms following disturbance due to the construction of the Jang Bogo Station. A total of 26 taxa were identified in the study area during the experimental period. Species number and diversity indices (richness, evenness, and diversity) were relatively low compared to data previously reported from Terra Nova Bay. Sphaerotylus antarcticus, Clavularia frankliniana, Hydractinia sp., Iridaea cordata, Fragilariopsis spp., Alcyonium antarcticum, and Metalaeospira pixelli were the dominant species in this area. Of these, the diatom Fragilariopsis spp. were the most abundant species, indicating their key role in maintaining the marine benthic community and controlling biogeochemical cycling. During the construction of the Jang Bogo Station, sediment coverage increased and diatoms declined due to the release of sediment into the coastal area. In February 2014, one month after the disturbance due to cyclone, the diatom coverage increased dramatically and thereby species number, richness index, and diversity index steadily rose from 2015 to 2018. However, non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination analysis of species similarities among sampling times showed that community structure had not completely recovered by 2018. Thus, long-term monitoring is required to elucidate the post-disturbance settlement mechanisms of marine benthic organisms at the study area in Terra Nova Bay.
