Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) affects cloven-hoofed livestock and causes devastating damages to the world's economies. Being endemic in developing countries, FMD has imposed a significant threat to the FMD-freedom status in developed countries. The globally-concerted effort to eradicate FMD at its source has faced a substantial challenge of having little knowledge about how FMD spreads in developing countries. So far, FMD virus transmission parameters have been estimated based on only a dozen actual outbreak data, mostly in Europe. Meanwhile, the fundamental north-south differences in livestock production, trading, and quarantine systems have questioned the applicability of these estimates to developing countries. In this light, we aim to narrow the knowledge gap by estimating the FMD virus transmission parameters in an endemic country, Vietnam, the world's fifth- largest pork producer. We use the spatial-dynamic kernel-based approach combined with daily FMD incursion data and FMD-host census data. The estimation also considers livestock composition and livestock quantity by species, which can influence FMD transmission. In line with existing literature, we find that cattle and buffaloes have a larger influence on disease spread than pigs, and FMD transmission depends on the herd size and the distance between susceptible and infected premises. However, our findings show FMD virus can spread over a much more ample space in our case compared with those in existing literature (25 km and 50 km versus 10 km), and the kernels have much fatter tails. This difference is likely due to the weakness in biosecurity systems, poor implementation of surveillance and quarantine measures, and bad husbandry practices such as swill feeding, which are prevalent in developing countries. Thus, our estimated kernels will be helpful for Vietnam in developing suitable biosecurity measures to contain and eradicate the FMD virus. They are also highly relevant for other countries with livestock farming practices and climate conditions similar to those in Vietnam.

The application of the shakedown theory to the analysis of the fatigue problems is presented. This point of view on the fatigue strength and the fatigue damage allows interpreting all types of industrial problems of fatigue in an efficient manner. The description of the stabilized mechanical state after shakedown at all scale, gives access to the engineering values which will drive the fatigue damage of the structure. The evolution of stress and strain tensors thus obtained for a cycle of fatigue, allows predicting the fatigue strength of structures. At high cycle fatigue, when elastic shakedown takes place, the fatigue strength can be described by a simple combination of shear amplitude and hydrostatic pressure at any point of the calculated structure, irrespective of the complexity of the structure and of the loading. At low cycle fatigue, from the stabilized state of the stress and strain, the fatigue strength is derived from a combination of the plastic, or the inelastic strain energy and the hydrostatic pressure. Numerous examples of fatigue analysis for different industrial areas are presented.

Pipeline dents fatigue life prediction is a subject of high interest for pipelines operating companies. Empreinte is an in-house developed pre and post processor to ABAQUS Finite Element Calculations dedicated to pipeline integrity assessment. Empreinte was first developed and experimentally validated for dents assessments under static loading conditions. As oil but also gas transmission pipelines are submitted to cyclic loading conditions (internal pressure variations, shutdowns, temperature variations …), it was decided to introduce a fatigue life criterion in Empreinte based on the Dang Van theory assuming that local mesoscopic stresses drive fatigue crack initiation. Full scale tests performed for PRCI projects PR-201-927, PR-201-9324 and MD-4-2 were used to validate the proposed fatigue assessment methodology: - the first full scale fatigue test was performed in 1994 on an X52 pipe. For this test, limited material and test data were available. - the second full scale fatigue test was performed in 2007 on an X52 pipe. For this test, material characterization (in particular tensile tests with full stress strain curves) and test data (strain gages measurements, indenter geometry …) were available. Fatigue life assessments were performed following three main steps: 1. using available data: non linear kinematic hardening constitutive laws were identified for the two pipes materials; 2. finite elements elastic-plastic modeling of the denting processes were carried out; 3. fatigue calculations were performed following a new approach using Dang Van criterion for which the parameters were determined from literature data. The elastic shakedown assumption allowed the determination of the local stress cycle from the macroscopic stress cycle. The fatigue criterion integrating the combined influences of shear and hydrostatic stresses was checked on all points of the pipe. Good agreement between experimental and calculated fatigue lives and fatigue crack initiation points was reached. This opens a promising way to assess pipeline defects fatigue life. Efforts are now focused on the standardization of a testing method to identify the Dang Van criterion of a pipeline material at least in air environment.

In the present work the pressure rolling treatment has been modelled by a direct stationary method which gives the stabilized mechanical state after complete rolling. One important input to the model is the pressure distribution at the contact between the roller and the sample. Due to the conforming geometries of the bodies in contact it is found that the pressure distribution differs from the one calculated with the Hertz theory. The numerical outputs from the pressure rolling model have been compared to experimental data, i.e. the residual stresses measured by X-ray diffraction. A good agreement between experimental and numerical results is obtained for the penetration depth and the residual stress prof It is found that friction has a strong influence on the surface residual stress.

Conference: 27th Spring Meeting on Fatigue and Plasticity Paris, FRANCE, 2008; International audience; This paper shows that fatigue strength of notched specimens under cyclic loading can be simply and accurately estimated by using elastic-plastic computations and averaging stress over a critical volume obtained by an optimisation process minimizing the dispersion between experiments and simulations. The Dang Van high cycle fatigue criterion is considered. Fatigue tests (tension-compression, bending and torsion) carried out by the Cetim, are used to calibrate the critical volume.

This paper presents a computational method of a simulation of the Friction Stir Welding process. The first step of the simulation uses an Eulerian approach of the thermomechanical problem. A finite element model is used to establish the temperature field based on a viscoplastic behaviour and experimental data. The second step of the simulation is more original. The calculation is based on a steady state algorithm. It takes into account the whole mechanical history of the material since the algorithm is based on an integration along the trajectories of the particles. Residual state is evaluated for a Friction Stir Welded assembling. Only the stationary phase of the process is simulated during these two steps which confers a substantial gain of the computation time.; Le travail présenté dans cet article décrit une méthode de calcul destinée à la simulation d’un procédé de soudage appelé Friction Stir Welding. À partir d’une loi de comportement viscoplastique et d’une approche eulérienne, le champ de température est évalué en tenant compte de l’écoulement de matière autour de l’outil. Ce premier résultat, obtenu à l’aide d’une résolution par éléments finis mixtes, est validé par des données expérimentales issues de measures obtenues par thermographie infrarouge. La seconde étape du calcul a pour but de determiner les contraintes résiduelles de l’assemblage après soudage. Pour cela, un algorithme élastoplastique stationnaire est utilisé. Lors du calcul, l’histoire mécanique de la matière est prise en compte en intégrant le comportement le long des trajectoires suivies par les points matériels. Seule la phase stationnaire du procédé sera simulée dans l’ensemble de ce travail.

A numerical model of the arc welding process is presented. It deals with all arc welding process with and without filler metal (Gas Metal Arc Welding and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding). We consider the three dimensional modelling of the stationary weld pool with a free deformable surface. All coupled equations are solved by the finite volume method. We consider heat transfer ands fluid flow in the weld pool and the geometry of the free surface subjected to arc pressure and drop impact in GMAW. The location of the energy supplied by drops in the weld pool is assumed to be a function of the Weber number. Comparison with macrography shows a really good agreement of the model.; Un modèle numérique des procédés de soudage à l'arc est présenté. Il traite des procédés de soudage à l'arc avec et sans apport de matière (soudage MIG/MAG et TIG). Nous considérons la modélisation tridimensionnelle d'un bain de fusion stationnaire avec une surface libre déformable. Toutes les équations couplées sont résolues par la méthode des volumes finis. Nous considérons les transferts thermiques et l'écoulement dans le bain de fusion ainsi que la géométrie de la surface libre soumise à la pression d'arc et à l'impact des gouttes en soudage MIG/MAG. La position de l'énergie fournie par les gouttes dans le bain de fusion est supposée être une fonction du nombre de Weber. Des comparaisons avec des macrographies montrent un très bon accord du modèle.

Fatigue failure is final result of complex microscopic phenomena which occur under cyclic loading. Traditionally this phenomenon is studied by different ways depending on the fatigue regime and on the field of interest: fatigue limit analysis, life prediction in high or in low cycle fatigue, thermal fatigue... The diversity of proposed approaches is so great that design engineers meet many difficulties to have a clear idea of the fatigue calculations which have to be done. The purpose of this paper is to present an original unified approach to both high and low cycle fatigue based on shakedown theories and dissipated energy. The discussion starts with an explanation of fatigue phenomena at different scales (microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic). Then some useful aspects of shakedown theory in relation with fatigue are presented. Applications to modeling of high cycle fatigue is then introduced: for instance, some multiaxial fatigue criteria (Dang Van, Papadopoulos) are essentially based on the hypothesis of elastic shakedown at the mesoscopic scale and therefore a bounded cumulated dissipated energy. In the low cycle fatigue regime, some recent results show that we can speak of a plastic shakedown at both mesoscopic and macroscopic scale and a cumulated energy bounded by the failure energy. These ideas are also justified by some infrared thermography test results permitting a direct determination of the fatigue limit.

International audience; A new intrinsic methodology for the prediction of fretting fatigue failure of a structure is presented. It is based, first, on the evaluation of local relevant thermomechanical parameters by new thermoelastoplastic computational methods (direct cyclic method) and, second, on the systematic use of the Dang Van multiaxial high-cycle fatigue criterion. For the validation of this proposal, numerical simulations of fretting fatigue tests on a particular experimental setup considered as a structure are performed. The resulting prediction of the experimental fretting fatigue map in relation to plastic and fatigue material properties is good.

This thesis was motivated by issues that arise regarding the use of the method of seismic isolation in the nuclear industry. Despite the research conducted during the last decades in the field of seismic isolation, many questions about the behavior of isolated structures remain. These questions concern, on the one hand, the vulnerability of these structures, due to an excursion (unexpected) in the post-linear domain, and on the other hand, phenomena that can lead to a significant excitation of none isolated modes. Furthermore, unlike previous work studying the seismic behavior of buildings, an important part of this thesis is devoted to the behavior of equipment through the study of floor spectra. Firstly, the probability of failure, in the case of nonlinear response of the superstructure, was studied with simple models, for different laws of nonlinear behavior and different types of support. Then, the effects of heavy damping were investigated and the mechanism of amplification of the response of non-isolated modes has been explained. To resolve the amplification problem of none isolated modes, the mixed isolated systems, combining passive isolation with semi-active devices, have been considered. The numerical analyses confirm the effectiveness of this approach. Finally, a series of shaking table tests on a simple model with two degrees of freedom was conducted. The model is equipped with a magneto-rheological damper which is controlled as a semi-active device. The comparison of the experimental results with those of numerical simulations shows that the models developed are able to represent satisfactorily the essential physical phenomena.; Cette thèse a été motivée par diverses questions qui se posent quant à l'utilisation de la méthode de l'isolation sismique dans l'industrie nucléaire. The work of the thesis concerns the fine modeling of the thermomechanical and metallurgical behavior of steels in order to determine the residual mechanical state of the structures during welding or heat treatment operations. For these cases, difficulties mainly arise in the modeling of the solid-solid phase transformations as well as in the modeling of the mechanical behavior of the multiphasic material. Within an original theoretical framework - generalized standard materials with internal constraints - we proposed models for the behavior of multiphasic material in which the individual mechanical behavior of each phase is supposed to be known and the macroscopic behavior is then obtained using a Reuss model. It is necessary to mention that each phase can present a specific mechanical behavior (plastic or viscoplastic) and the effect of the TRIP - Transformation Induced Plasticity - can be taken into account, which constitutes the originality of the thesis. The models have been implemented into the numerical code COMSOL-Multiphysics and an experimental test presenting similar phenomena as those encountered during welding or heat treatment operations has been simulated. Comparisons between numerical and experimental results show the performance as well as the flexibility of our approach for the simulation of thermomechanical and metallurgical behavior of steels during welding or heat treatment operations., Le travail de la thèse porte sur la modélisation fine des lois de comportement thermomécaniques et métallurgiques des aciers afin de déterminer l'état mécanique résiduel des structures lors d'une opération de soudage. Il s'agit de définir les cinétiques de transformation de phases à l'état solide ainsi que le comportement mécanique du matériau multiphasé. Dans un cadre théorique original-les matériaux standards généralisés avec des liaisons internes-nous avons proposé des modèles de comportement pour un matériau multiphasé pour lesquels le comportement mécanique propre à chaque phase est supposé connu. Le comportement macroscopique du mélange est ensuite obtenu via l'hypothèse de Reuss (modèle en série). Soulignons que chaque phase peut présenter un comportement spécifique (plastique ou viscoplastique) et l'effet de la plasticité de transformation (TRIP¬-TRansformation Induced Plasticity) peut être prise en compte, ce qui constitue l'originalité de la thèse. Les modèles ont été implantés dans COMSOL-Multiphysics et deux simulations ont été effectuées dans le but de reproduire des essais représentatifs des phénomènes rencontrés lors d'une opération de soudage ou de traitement thermique des aciers. Les résultats fournis par nos modèles ont été comparés aux résultats expérimentaux issus de la littérature. On a pu ainsi montré que les évolutions thermiques, métallurgiques et mécaniques corrèlent de manière satisfaisante avec l'expérience. Cela confirme la performance et la souplesse de notre approche dans la simulation numérique des structures métalliques sous chargements thermomécaniques anisothermes avec la présence de transformations microstructurales.

The objective of this thesis is to develop a numerical model of the thermal-mechanical behavior of an automotive brake disc, in order to assess its fatigue behavior. The approach gathers : new numerical strategies which use eulerian algorithms adapted to problems involving components subjected to a moving load ; a relevant modeling of the behavior of the material ; durability criteria adapted to the different damages undergone by the disc, taking account of the multi-axial and non-isothermal characteristics of the loadings. A preliminary analysis of the physical phenomena occurring in the brake disc is led (high temperatures variations, severe thermal gradients in the disc, plastic deformations, friction, etc.) and their couplings (thermomechanical couplings, couplings between thermal phenomena and friction between the disc and the pads, etc. ) are analyzed. Then, a numerical modeling of the brake disc, based on realistic assumptions, can be proposed. This study can be realized thanks to the developments of new algorithms which save computational times. Their fundamental principle is to work not in the disc reference but in the loading's one and to use eulerian coordinates in order to represent the structure movement. These algorithms are described in the thesis. At last, a strategy is proposed to analyze the brake disc durability, based on a “consistent approach” which includes the modeling of the loading, the modeling of the material behavior, an efficient numerical structural strategy and relevant fatigue criteria. The objective is to reach the same “degree of precision” in the different items in order to have a robust and useful tool for engineers in charge of the brake disc design.; L'objectif de cette thèse est de proposer une modélisation du comportement thermomécanique des disques de frein automobiles pour la prédiction de leur tenue en fatigue. Contribution à l'encadrement: M. Bonnet; To be added later.; Ce travail constitue une première étape dans la compréhension et la modélisation du comportement de contacts en frottement dans un environnement corrosif. On s'intéresse plus particulièrement à des stsructures évoluant en milieu marin.La première partie fait une large part à l'expérimentation, avec le développement d'un moyen d'essai original, et précise l'importance relative des phénomènes électrochimiques et mécaniques pour un contact ponctuel acier inoxydable / alumine en milieu neutre chloruré (NaCl 30 g/l). Le deuxième volet s'est attaché au développement d'une modélisation par équations intégrales des problèmes de contacts ponctuels entre des structures élastoplastiques homogènes ou revêtues en frottement continu.

La thèse a pour thème la modélisation numérique et la prédiction de l'endommagement (l'usure ou la fissuration) dû au contact avec frottement avec petits débattements (fretting). Elle comporte deux parties. Dans la première partie, une nouvelle méthode de calcul éléments finis est développe pour les chargements cycliques. Contrairement aux algorithmes classiques incrémentaux, cette méthode est basée sur un algorithme original qui permet d'obtenir directement l'état stabilisé mécanique éventuel. La méthode est itérative et consiste à chercher sur tout le cycle de chargement, en un premier temps des solutions statiquement et cinématiquement admissibles, et puis après des solutions plastiquement admissibles. A la fin de chaque itération, la condition de périodicité est imposée. Et ainsi, lorsque l'algorithme converge, on obtient des champs de contraintes et de déformations périodiques et vérifiant l'équilibre et la loi de comportement sur tout le cycle. La comparaison des temps de calculs par rapport à la méthode incrémentale a démontré la performance de cette méthode. Dans la deuxième partie, cette méthode est mise en oeuvre dans le cas du chargement cyclique mobile de fretting. Ainsi des cartes d'adaptation et d'accommodation sont établies en fonction de divers paramètres. Les résultats de prédiction de l'initiation des fissures de fatigue faite par l'application du critère multiaxial de DANG VAN sont en très bon accord avec les résultats expérimentaux. L'usure est obtenue pour une réponse mécanique de type accommodation et elle est donc le résultat d'un mécanisme de fatigue oligocyclique.
