Abstract Chronic fatigue syndrome or myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) is a medical condition characterized by severe and prolonged fatigue that is not relieved by rest or attributed to any underlying medical or psychological condition. Individuals with CFS/ME are considered to have an increased risk of a wide range of comorbid conditions, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). The association between CFS/ME and CVD is not fully understood. To determine the prevalence of CFS/ME in a sample population and examine its association with CVD. Weighted sample size data of 114,834 was analyzed from the 2021–2022 national health interview survey (NHIS). Information on sociodemographic factors, CVD risk factors, and history of CFS/ME and CVD were collected. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to determine the association between CFS/ME and CVD, adjusting for traditional CVD risk factors (age, sex, race, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, smoking, and body mass index (BMI). Median age of participants was 53 years, and majority of participants were female (53.9%). Prevalence of CFS/ME was 1.2%. Abstract Introduction Malaria, a widespread tropical disease, remains a significant global health issue, resulting in numerous deaths each year. In Ghana, malaria is a leading cause of illness, contributing to a large proportion of hospital outpatient visits. The study assessed the pattern of malaria and vector IgG antibody levels among suspected malaria patients seeking healthcare at selected health facilities across Ghana. Methods Samples from a total of 823 participants aged 1 to 85 years with clinical malaria from the ten regions of Ghana were recruited into the study. Archived plasma obtained from each participant was used to assess antibody responses against MSP1 (19 k), MSP2 (FC27 & 3D7), MSP3, gSG6-P1, and GLURP-RO using ELISA. The data were categorized according to study site, age group, gender, and diagnostic tests. Data were analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis’s statistics. The statistical significance was assessed at 0.05. Abstract Background Increased intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) affects the retinal microvasculature, which can be imaged and quantified by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). We aimed to identify the mediating factor between ICP and OCTA parameters association in IIH patients. Methods IIH patients with active intracranial hypertension were enrolled. Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a global healthcare challenge lacking a simple and affordable detection method. We propose a novel deep learning framework, Eye-AD, to detect Early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease (EOAD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) using OCTA images of retinal microvasculature and choriocapillaris. Eye-AD employs a multilevel graph representation to analyze intra- and inter-instance relationships in retinal layers. Using 5751 OCTA images from 1671 participants in a multi-center study, our model demonstrated superior performance in EOAD (internal data: AUC = 0.9355, external data: AUC = 0.9007) and MCI detection (internal data: AUC = 0.8630, external data: AUC = 0.8037). Furthermore, we explored the associations between retinal structural biomarkers in OCTA images and EOAD/MCI, and the results align well with the conclusions drawn from our deep learning interpretability analysis. Our findings provide further evidence that retinal OCTA imaging, coupled with artificial intelligence, will serve as a rapid, noninvasive, and affordable dementia detection.

ABSTRACT Introduction It is suggested that cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) plays a role in strokes and dementia. Retinal microvasculature imaged by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is suggested to be associated with cerebral microvessels. We measured the density of the retinal arterioles and venules on the superficial vascular complex (SVC) of OCTA images and investigated associations with SVD markers in older adults. Methods Participants underwent cerebral magnetic resonance imaging and OCTA imaging. An external algorithm (OCTA‐Net) was used to segment the retinal vessels into arterioles and venules. SVD indicators [lacunes, white matter hyperintensity (WMH), perivascular spaces (PVS) and cerebral microbleeds (CMBs)] were determined according to the STandards for ReportIng Vascular changes on nEuroimaging (STRIVE) Results 246 older adults (mean age = 58.84 ± 7.00 years; 38.21 % males) were included in our data analysis. After adjusting for covariates, lower retinal arteriole densities correlated with higher periventricular WMH (p = 0.025) and PVS in the basal ganglia (p = 0.027). Lower retinal venule density correlated with higher deep WMH burden (p = 0.014). Lower arteriolar density was associated with increased SVD burden (p = 0.035). Arteriolar complex branching was associated with periventricular WMH (p = 0.020) while venular complex branching was associated with deep WMH (p = 0.041). Conclusion Retinal vascular changes may reflect cerebral vascular changes as evidenced by OCTA‐derived metrics.

ABSTRACT Introduction We aimed to explore the difference in choroidal vascular parameters using swept‐source optical coherence tomography (SS‐OCT) in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) compared to controls. We also explored the ability of the choroidal parameters to reflect elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients with IIH. Methods This observational study recruited patients diagnosed with IIH and healthy controls. A lumbar puncture was performed for ICP measurement. All the participants underwent OCT examinations. The choroid was automatically segmented and imaged by the OCT tool. The parafoveal choroidal vascular volume (CVV) and choroidal vascular index (CVI) were calculated in 3 mm annulus and 6 mm annulus. ObjectiveThe association of sex-specific hormones with coronary computed tomography angiography(CCTA)-based plaque characteristics in women without cardiovascular disease is not well understood. We investigated the association of sex-specific hormones with coronary artery plaque characteristics in a contemporary multiracial cohort with no clinical coronary artery disease (CAD).MethodsIn this cross-sectional analysis, we utilized data from 2,325 individuals with no clinical CAD from the Miami Heart (MiHeart) study. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to investigate the association of sex hormones: sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), free and total testosterone, estradiol, with plaque characteristics among women and men.ResultsOf the 1,155 women, 34.2% had any plaque and 3.4% had any high-risk plaque features (HRP) while among men (n = 1170), 63.1% had any plaque and 10.4% had HRP. Among women, estradiol and SHBG were associated with lower odds of any plaque after adjusting for age and race-ethnicity (estradiol OR per SD increase: 0.87, 95%CI: 0.76-0.98; SHBG OR per SD increase: 0.82, 95%CI: 0.72-0.93) but the significance did not persist after adjustment of cardiovascular risk factors. High free testosterone was associated with higher odds of HRP (aOR:3.48, 95%CI:1.07-11.26) but null associations for the other sex hormones with HRP, in the context of limited sample size. Among men, there were no significant associations between sex-specific hormones and plaque or HRP.ConclusionAmong young to middle-aged women with no clinical CAD, increasing estradiol and SHBG were associated with lower odds of any plaque and higher free testosterone was associated with HRP. Larger cohorts may be needed to validate this.

Background HIV‐associated cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing in prevalence. The mechanisms underlying the heightened cardiovascular risk faced by people with HIV (PWH), however, remain poorly defined. Recent studies indicate an important role of lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) in predicting CVD risk in the general population, but little is known regarding its role in HIV‐associated CVD. Thus, we sought to evaluate whether Lp(a) is elevated in PWH and if it is associated with impaired coronary endothelial function (CEF), a known mediator of CVD in PWH. Methods and Results In this cross‐sectional study, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging with isometric handgrip exercise, an endothelial dependent stressor, was performed to assess CEF in 65 PWH and 52 controls without HIV. Background Prepregnancy diabetes and obesity are associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs). However, the proportion of cases of HDP in the population explained by diabetes and obesity (population attributable fraction), especially among American Indian and Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, is not well characterized. Methods and Results We conducted a cross‐sectional analysis of data on individuals with a live singleton birth from the US National Vital Statistics System between 2016 and 2019. We used adjusted logistic regression to estimate the prevalence odds ratios of HDPs and tested interaction for race and ethnicity. We calculated the population attributable fraction for the effect of obesity and diabetes on HDPs. Among 13 201 338 birthing individuals, (mean age, 29±6 years), 7% had HDP. The prevalence of HDP was highest among American Indian and Alaska Native individuals (9.1%). Prepregnancy diabetes (prevalence odds ratio, 2.63 [95% CI, 2.59–2.67]) and obesity (prevalence odds ratio, 2.95 [95% CI, 2.93–2.97]) were associated with HDPs. Compared with non‐Hispanic White individuals, the association of diabetes with HDPs was strongest among Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (prevalence odds ratio, 3.05 [95% CI, 2.48–3.77]), and the association of obesity with HDP was strongest among Asian individuals (prevalence odds ratio, 3.44 [95% CI, 3.35–3.54]; all P for interaction

This study looked at assessment for learning as a criterion for promoting inclusiveness and equitable access to educational opportunities in Ghana. It compared assessment for learning and assessment of learning and recommended measures to evaluate students' performance to allow for equitable access and progression in education. The study found the deployment of assessment of learning as discriminatory, restrictive, and ineffective for judging the overall worth of students after several years of learning. It is recommended that to ensure equitable access and fairness such that no child is left behind in the Ghanaian educational system, the criteria for progression of students be based on interest and academic strengths using assessment for learning approaches and not necessarily standardized tests.

Background Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is suggested as a potential tool for retinal biomarkers in idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). We explored how macular exudate (ME) affects retinal structure in IIH and investigated its relationship with their clinical features.Methods Patients diagnosed with IIH and matched controls were enrolled. Introduction: Suboptimal cardiovascular health is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and long-term cardiovascular risk. The authors examined trends in cardiovascular risk factors and correlates of suboptimal cardiovascular risk profiles among reproductive-aged U.S. women. Methods: With data from 335,959 women in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (2015–2020), the authors conducted serial cross-sectional analysis among nonpregnant reproductive-aged women (18–44 years) without cardiovascular disease who self-reported information on 8 cardiovascular risk factors selected on the basis of Life's Essential 8 metrics. The outbreak of COVID-19 led to the migration of 1729 adults, who had applied to the University of Ghana to go through an access course for writing the Mature Entrance Examination for admission into undergraduate programmes. A survey was conducted to explore the experiences of the students. The study revealed that over 90% of the respondents were proficient in the use of ICTs. They used the Sakai learning management platform, zoom, and emails for their teaching and learning engagements. Four in five (84%) respondents preferred 50% online tuition and 50% face-to-face tuition. They, however, had issues with poor internet connectivity, the high cost of data for the internet, and limited contact time. Basic support systems such as the provision of high-speed but affordable internet services and increased online interactions will be of help to such students.

This qualitative study explored how female college students in a community in Ghana undertook their online learning activities during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve the objectives of the study, criterion sampling, and an open-ended online questionnaire were used to collect data from 24 female students from the Presbyterian Women's' College of Education (PWC) in the Aburi community of Ghana. From conventional content analysis, it was found that the female community college students appreciate online learning. They are able to position themselves to adapt, change their mind-set, and build their confidence to effectively study online. They have also shown the ability to leverage on basic interactive tools such a WhatsApp, chatrooms, and conference telephone calls to undertake virtual group study activities. They, however, have concerns with poor internet connectivity, limited financial resources for accessing internet services, limited time for grasping their content and lack of electronic devices. If they are supported with free internet services, electronic devices such as smart phones and laptops and equipped with online study skills, they will be able to consolidate and utilize the gains of online learning that has emerged from the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is no doubt that supervision plays a significant role in doctoral education. Supervisors have a fiduciary responsibility for guiding their supervisees throughout their doctoral research and theses writing journeys. In recent times however, many doctoral education programmes have adopted a collegial support system for doctoral students by introducing students' research seminars to supplement traditional supervision. Research seminars offer both students and faculty the opportunity to engage in scholarly dialogue aimed at improving the former's research and thesis. Although such seminars have become commonplace in many doctoral education programmes worldwide, little research exist on students' perceptions of research seminars in doctoral learning. In this paper, we contribute to the literature by exploring the perceptions of 12 PhD students from a University in Ghana about research seminars and their usefulness in doctoral education. The findings indicate that the students perceived research seminars in doctoral education as "spaces" evoking manifold purposes--constructive advice; discrediting students' work; varied views; and "muffling" students' voices. Furthermore, the students' perceptions of the usefulness of research seminars in their learning were trifocal in scope--research and thesis writing, presentation skills, and confidence-building. The paper makes some recommendations for improving research seminars in doctoral education for the purpose of enhancing collegial learning.

COVID-19 has brought surprises in the educational landscape. Educational institutions had to hurriedly migrate all teaching, learning and assessment activities to online platforms. Such was the case of adult learners who had signed on to the access course for entrance into the University of Ghana. This study sought to find out how the e-learning experiences of adult learners differed across gender as they studied English language, Logic and Mathematics online. From a quantitative analysis of the data, the online experience of students with regard to Mathematics learning did not differ along gender lines. Therefore, the experiences of males and females were similar. Though, there were differences across gender groups regarding Logic and English language experiences, those of Logic experience were much bigger, where males provided overall more positive ratings than females. Specifically, for Logic experience, instructors' show of respect to students, understanding of the learning needs of students and effective communication were rated generally better among males than females. Going forward, Logic instructors should pay equal attention to both groups irrespective of their gender to identify their learning needs and support them accordingly. Furthermore, all the instructors irrespective of their course could continue to improve their delivery of the courses as well as their relationships with the students in order to enhance future experience of the students.

The cultivation of cashew crops carries numerous economic advantages, and countries worldwide that produce this crop face a high demand. The effects of wind speed and wind direction on crop yield prediction using proficient deep learning algorithms are less emphasized or researched. We propose a combination of advanced deep learning techniques, specifically focusing on long short-term memory (LSTM) and random forest models. We intend to enhance this ensemble model using dynamic time warping (DTW) to assess the spatiotemporal data (wind speed and wind direction) similarities within Jaman North, Jaman South, and Wenchi with their respective production yield. In the Bono region of Ghana, these three areas are crucial for cashew production. The LSTM-DTW-RF model with wind speed and wind direction achieved an R2 score of 0.847 and the LSTM-RF model without these two key features R2 score of (0.74). Both models were evaluated using the augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test, which is commonly used in time series analysis to assess stationarity, where the LSTM-DTW-RF achieved a 90% level of confidence, while LSTM-RF attained an 87.99% level. Among the three municipalities, Jaman South had the highest evaluation scores for the model, with an RMSE of 0.883, an R2 of 0.835, and an MBE of 0.212 when comparing actual and predicted values for Wenchi. In terms of the annual average wind direction, Jaman North recorded (270.5 SW°), Jaman South recorded (274.8 SW°), and Wenchi recorded (272.6 SW°). The DTW similarity distance for the annual average wind speed across these regions fell within specific ranges: Jaman North (±25.72), Jaman South (±25.89), and Wenchi (±26.04). Following the DTW similarity evaluation, Jaman North demonstrated superior performance in wind speed, while Wenchi excelled in wind direction. This underscores the potential efficiency of DTW when incorporated into the analysis of environmental factors affecting crop yields, given its invariant nature. The results obtained can guide further exploration of DTW variations in combination with other machine learning models to predict higher cashew yields. Additionally, these findings emphasize the significance of wind speed and direction in vertical farming, contributing to informed decisions for sustainable agricultural growth and development.

Background Retinal ischemic perivascular lesions (RIPLs) are an indicator of ischemia in the middle retina. We aimed to determine the relationship between RIPLs and single subcortical infarction (SSI). We also investigated the differences in cerebral small vessel disease imaging burden between groups with and without RIPLs in SSI. Methods and Results In this case–control study, we enrolled 82 patients with SSI and 72 nonstroke controls. Abstract Shea (Vitellaria paradoxa C.F. Gaertn) is a fruit tree of domestic and industrial importance in arid and semi‐arid regions of Sub‐Saharan Africa. Fruit set is largely dependent on insect pollination but recent studies have revealed a pollen deficit. The introduction of managed bees into orchards is an effective approach for enhanced pollination services in temperate climates. However, there is limited information to guide the adoption of this practice in agroforestry parklands. This study investigated the effect of managed honey bee colonies (Apis mellifera) on fruit yield of shea in six parklands across three regions of Ghana. Tree proximity to the apiary had a detectable effect on fruit set within a 500 m range of the apiary. Proximity of shea trees to apiary was significantly related to number of immature fruit set but not number of mature fruits. Fruit weight and size were not significantly related to distance from apiary or pollination treatment. This implies that the introduction of beekeeping has the potential to address shea pollination deficit at least within a 500 m range of the apiary. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal hive density per acreage of shea parkland to maximise pollination services.

Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) has gained traction as one of the effective strategies in tackling the climate crisis. Many CSA practices have been promoted by development agencies to smallholder farmers based on the assumption that farmers would adopt these innovations for their potential benefits. However, the adoption of CSA practices in Ghana and much of Africa remains low and decision making and on-farm innovation processes are poorly understood. This study seeks to provide empirical and participatory insight into how smallholder farmers innovate. Based on a novel application of a participatory video methodology, in farming communities in the Upper West Region of Ghana, that have been exposed to multiple CSA intervention programmes, the paper analyses farmers’ own self-curated accounts of experiences with CSA innovation. The findings show that farmer’s motivation to adopt CSA innovations is driven by their concerns for food security, economic gains, and the environmental impact of climate change on their farming activities and livelihood. The study reveals a mismatch between the CSA technologies and practices advanced by the development agencies and what farmers perceive as relevant and important in addressing their farming challenges. In particular, the findings show that in a pool of more than 12 CSA technologies and practices that had been promoted through three donor-driven intervention programmes in the communities, farmers selected less labour intensive, less costly, and CSA technologies and practices that fitted to their current farming practices and the local context. Agricultural extension agents served as an important information source on the CSA innovation and their practical implementation and farmers’ social groups played a crucial role in facilitating learning about the CSA technologies and practices. There is the need to integrate farmers voices using innovative methodologies such as participatory videos to better understand farmers’ experiences in the innovation process which will help inform the design of effective interventions and promote adoption of innovations aimed at enhancing the productivity of smallholder farmers and reducing environmental impacts in African food systems. By focusing on the innovations that farmers perceive as beneficial and adaptable to their local contexts, development organizations can use their resources more efficiently and promote adoption of contextually appropriate CSA innovations.
