Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes are widely used in microfiltration and ultrafiltration because of their high chemical resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical strength. However, the hydrophobicity and high roughness of the PVDF membrane surface make it vulnerable to membrane fouling. Therefore, engineered nanomaterials such as graphene oxide (GO) have been coated to the membranes to improve its fouling resistance. In this study, PVDF membranes were coated with different concentrations of silver functionalized graphene oxide (Ag-GO) nanocomposite suspensions (0.01–0.3 mg ml−1) via pressurized filtration process. The fouling resistance of Ag-GO coated PVDF membranes was significantly enhanced due to increased hydrophilicity and smoother membrane surface. The initial feed water flux of modified membranes increased up to 53% when compared to that of the pristine PVDF membrane. Also, the flux recovery rate and antibacterial properties of Ag-GO/PVDF membranes were higher than that of the pristine membrane. Ag-GO was stably coated on the membrane surface and the enhanced performance resulting from modification with Ag-GO was maintained after the membrane backwash. We expect that our results could contribute to the development of highly reusable antifouling membranes coated with inorganic nanocomposites.

Due to the application of silver-graphene oxide (Ag-GO) in diverse fields, it is important to investigate its potential impacts on the environment including soils. In this study, the response of microbial communities in soils treated with Ag-GO synthesized by glucose reduction was determined by analyzing enzyme activities, biomass, and inorganic N concentrations and by pyrosequencing. In soils treated with 0.1–1 mg Ag-GO g−1 soil, the activities of β-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, and xylosidase decreased up to 80% and NO3− concentration decreased up to 82% indicating inhibited nitrification. Within the bacterial community, the relative abundance of Acidobacteria and Cyanobacteria in soils treated with Ag-GO were lower than that in control soil. Meanwhile, the relative abundance of AD3 and Firmicutes tended to increase under Ag-GO treatments. These changes in bacterial community composition reflected lowered activities associated with C and N cycling. On the other hand, microbial biomass showed no distinct change in response to Ag-GO treatment. Our study can serve as important basis in establishing guidelines for regulating the release of nanocomposites such as Ag-GO to the soil environment.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology used for reducing anthropogenic CO

Food waste accounts for a substantial portion of the organic waste generated at an increasing rate worldwide. Organic waste, including food waste, is largely subjected to landfill disposal, incineration, and anaerobic digestion; however, more sustainable methods are needed for treating it. Treatment of organic waste using black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae is an environmentally safe and cost-efficient method that has been attracting increasing attention worldwide. Black soldier fly decomposes various types of organic waste and converts them into high-value biomasses such as oils and proteins. This review introduces the trends in research related to the treatment of organic waste by black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae (BSFL) and their bioconversion efficiencies in Asian countries. Perspectives on the growth of BSFL during waste treatment operation and optimal rearing conditions are provided. The trends in studies related to the application of BSFL as biofuel and animal feed are also discussed. Such use of BSFL would be beneficial in Asia, especially in countries where the technology for processing organic waste is not readily available. This review may provide further directions of investigations including culture techniques for industrial scale applications of BSFL in food waste treatment and resource production in Asian countries.

Due to recent developments in nanotechnology, nanomaterials (NMs) such as graphene oxide (GO) may enter the soil environment with mostly unknown consequences. We investigated the effects of GO on soil microbial activity in a 59-day soil incubation study. For this, high-purity GO was prepared and characterized. Soils were treated with up to 1 mg GO g(-1) soil, and the changes in the activities of 1,4-β-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, xylosidase, 1,4-β-N-acetyl glucosaminidase, and phosphatase and microbial biomass were determined. 0.5-1 mg GO g(-1) soil lowered the activity of xylosidase, 1,4-β-N-acetyl glucosaminidase, and phosphatase by up to 50% when compared to that in the control soils up to 21 days of incubation. Microbial biomass in soils treated with GO was not significantly different from that in control soils throughout the incubation period, and the soil enzyme activity and microbial biomass were not significantly correlated in this study. Our results indicate that soil enzyme activity can be lowered by the entry of GO into soils in short term but it can be recovered afterwards.
