ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Depression in old age is an important public health problem. The aims of this study were to report the prevalence of depression in the Medical Research Council Cognitive Function and Ageing Study (MRC CFAS), a community-based, cohort.MethodFollowing screening of 13 004 people aged 65 and over from a population base, a stratified random subsample of 2640 participants received the Geriatric Mental State (GMS) examination and were diagnosed using the Automated Geriatric Examination for Computer-Assisted Taxonomy (AGECAT) algorithm. RESULTS: The prevalence of depression was 8.7% [95% confidence interval (CI) 7.3-10.2], increasing to 9.7% if subjects with concurrent dementia were included. Depression was more common in women (10.4%) than men (6.5%) and was associated with functional disability, co-morbid medical disorder, and social deprivation. Prevalence remained high into old age, but after adjustment for other associated factors, it was lower in the older age groups. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of depression in the elderly is high and remains high into old age, perhaps due to increased functional disability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. A previous study using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) has documented a very high prevalence of anxiety symptoms among older inpatients. The STAI produced two main concepts on factor analysis -'Nervousness' and 'Well-being'- and high scores on both caused the high overall score in these patients.Aim. To investigate how the scorings on the STAI evolve after discharge in older patients in order to understand better the reasons for their high scorings while in hospital.Methods. Sixty-three patients who had been scored on the STAI during their stay in an elder care department were followed up at 1-3 and 12 months after discharge. Data were analysed by ancova for unbalanced designs.Results. The mean STAI sum score increased significantly (3.5 points adjusted for the baseline scoring, age and gender, P < 0.001) from the first follow-up while in hospital to 1-3 months after discharge, with no significant change between the second and the last follow-up. This increase resulted primarily from a significant worsening of the score on 'well-being'. The score on 'nervousness' remained unchanged. Age did not influence the scores, while females scored higher. No interaction effects were observed, indicating that the evolvement of nervousness and anxiety after discharge is independent of gender and age. Item analysis showed that the worsening of the score on 'well-being' in these patients during the first 1-3 months after discharge was primarily caused by a lower score on the item 'I feel secure'.Conclusion. The study does not support the hypothesis that a high level of nervousness and lack of well-being among hospitalized older patients results from acute illness and hospitalization. The worsening in the score on well-being after discharge of such patients is primarily caused by low levels of feelings of security. This represents a challenge to nurses providing home-based care. Home-dwelling people with dementia rely on their family members to be able to stay at home. This affects the family caregivers' quality of life (QoL). However, less is known about how male and female caregivers differ in their QoL. Our study aimed to investigate gender differences in caregivers' quality of life (QoL), whether emotional relationships influence QoL, and how their QoL changes over time. The study applied a cross-sectional and a longitudinal design to examine a total of 208 caregivers, 158 female and 50 male caregivers, and their family member with dementia. Regression analysis and t-tests were performed to identify what characteristics about caregivers and care receivers influence male and female QoL, and whether caregivers' QoL developed after one year. Both male and female caregivers' depression influenced their QoL. For females, their own social distress influenced their QoL, and for males, their experience of their care receivers' overemotional attitude influenced their QoL. From baseline to one-year follow-up their QoL decreased while their distress and experience of care receivers' emotional attitudes was stable. Aim and Objective: To explore the challenges faced by family caregivers of people with frontotemporal dementia and other forms of dementia affecting the frontal and temporal lobes causing behavioural disturbances through a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews., Background: Studies of different forms of dementia involving degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes have mainly focused on the neurophysiology and physiology of the disease and on caregivers' health. Few studies have described the challenges and burdens connected with everyday life and in relation to suitable nursing home placement that are faced by family caregivers., Method and Design: This study used a descriptive and explorative design. Eleven semi-structured interviews with family caregivers of patients from special units in four nursing homes were conducted in 2014. Data were analysed based on Kvale and Brinkmann's three contexts of interpretation: self-understanding, common sense and theoretical understanding. Due to behavioural disturbances and lack of relevant competencies among health personnel, family members were often moved between nursing homes., Conclusion: Pronounced personality and behavioural disturbances such as tactlessness and aggression in a family member with dementia are experienced by caregivers as stressful and burdensome and may lead to feelings of shame and guilt. Background: Many relatives of close family members suffering from dementia have taken on the caregiver role. While intervention studies have revealed promising results on caregiver burden, distress, and depression, there is a lack of knowledge about how caregivers' perceived relationship with their ill family member influences the burden of care. This study examined whether a psychosocial intervention influenced this perceived relationship from the caregivers' perspective. We also explored whether the caregivers' perception of the care receiver's attitude and behavior changed over time, and whether caregiver stress and mood differed following the intervention., Methods: The participating caregivers and care receivers were randomly assigned to a psychosocial intervention comprising education about dementia, counselling and group sessions, or to treatment as usual. The study investigated caregivers' experience of expressed emotion using the Felt Expressed Emotion Rating Scale (FEERS), a self-report questionnaire that captures caregivers' perception of criticism (CC) and emotional over-involvement (EOI) exhibited by the family members with dementia., Results: A total of 208 dyads were enrolled in the study. There were no significant differences between the intervention and control groups in the studied variables. Caregivers' perception of CC and EOI was low but fluctuated somewhat, whereas their mood and stress level were stable during the follow-up period., Conclusions: According to the FEERS, the intervention did not influence caregivers' perception of CC and EOI, and there was no difference between the intervention and control groups regarding caregivers' perceived relationship. Detection and quantification of tread wear particles in the environment have been a challenge owing to lack of a robust method. This study investigated the applicability of a combination of Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (STA), Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR), and Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) in the detection and quantification of tire particles from formulated sediments. FTIR spectral data were obtained by heating 20 samples in STA. Among the 20 samples, 12 were tire granules in formulated sediments (TGIS) containing 1%, 2%, 5%, and 10% by mass of tire granules, while the remaining eight contained 0.5, 1, 2.5, and 5 mg of tire granules only (TGO). The PARAFAC models decomposed the trilinear data into three components. Tire rubber materials in tire granules (RM) and a combination of water and carbon dioxide were the components identified in all samples. The linear regression analysis of score values from the PARAFAC models showed that the RM quantity predicted were comparable to measured values in both TGIS and TGO. Decomposing the overlying components in the spectral data into different components, and predicting unknown quantity in both sample types, the method proves robust in identifying and quantifying tire particles from sediments.

Background: Different user groups regard systematic reviews as reliable and valuable sources for answering research questions. For systematic reviews to fulfill their purpose, methodological quality in all stages are of importance. The studies identified in a systematic search form the basis of the review, thus the search process methodology is important for both performing and reporting the search. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the quality of non-Cochrane systematic reviews by analyzing how they perform and report the search. This is exemplified by systematic reviews on eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), a trauma-focused therapy commonly used for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Methods and Results: We examined the method chapters of 20 systematic reviews on the subject, and rated their searches and reporting using relevant elements from the Cochrane Handbook and PRISMA. We found inadequacies in the methods employed for searching and reporting the search strategy, which could have been avoided by greater adherence to guiding documents for performing systematic reviews. Conclusion: Our findings raise important questions for future debate on the risk of omitting studies, thus impairing the conclusions in a systematic review. For clinical purposes, researchers should investigate if, and how, the search strategy in a systematic review affects the body of knowledge and the results.

The purpose of the current study was to evaluate whether a combined intervention of physical activity and music therapy could reduce anxiety, restlessness, irritability, and aggression among individuals with severe dementia. An exploratory design was used to evaluate a combined intervention of physical activity, music therapy, and daily walking. Interventions were systematically implemented for 8 weeks. Target groups were individuals with dementia with frontal lobe symptoms in institutional care. Primary outcome measure was the Brøset Violence Checklist (BVC). Four men and two women (mean age = 84.3 years) and their primary caretakers (n = 6) participated. The most prominent symptoms among participants at baseline were confusion, irritability, and verbal threats. The individual BVC total scores indicated significant improvements (p = 0.03). Implementation of individualized music therapy combined with increased physical activity for 8 weeks was a feasible intervention that reduced anxiety, restlessness, irritability, and aggression in the current study. Aims and Objectives: To explore how spouses who are caregivers to persons with dementia experience everyday life 6-12 months after participation in the intervention condition in the Norwegian Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Early Dementia (N-CORDIAL) study., Background: There is no current medical curative treatment for cognitive impairment and dementia-associated conditions. These conditions will lead to an increased need for daily assistance and care, as well as greater stress for caregivers. The Norwegian CORDIAL Study is a manual-based randomised controlled trial based on the German CORDIAL study (cognitive rehabilitation and cognitive behavioural treatment for early dementia in Alzheimer's disease), consisting of cognitive rehabilitation, cognitive behavioural therapy and life review methods., Design and Methods: A descriptive exploratory study with qualitative semi-structured in-depth interviews with six spouses of persons with dementia who had participated in the Norwegian CORDIAL study. The transcribed text was analysed by systematic text condensation., Result: The main theme identified, "An everyday search for meaning," referred to the stress experienced by the caregivers and their coping strategies in everyday life., Conclusion: The caregivers had gained increased awareness of coping strategies in everyday life 6-12 months after the intervention. The amino acid l-α-alanine is the most commonly used material for solid-state electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosimetry, due to the formation of highly stable radicals upon irradiation, with yields proportional to the radiation dose. Two major alanine radical components designated R1 and R2 have previously been uniquely characterized from EPR and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) studies as well as from quantum chemical calculations. There is also convincing experimental evidence of a third minor radical component R3, and a tentative radical structure has been suggested, even though no well-defined spectral signature has been observed experimentally. In the present study, temperature dependent EPR spectra of X-ray irradiated polycrystalline alanine were analyzed using five multivariate methods in further attempts to understand the composite nature of the alanine dosimeter EPR spectrum. Principal component analysis (PCA), maximum likelihood common factor analysis (MLCFA), independent component analysis (ICA), self-modeling mixture analysis (SMA), and multivariate curve resolution (MCR) were used to extract pure radical spectra and their fractional contributions from the experimental EPR spectra. All methods yielded spectral estimates resembling the established R1 spectrum. Furthermore, SMA and MCR consistently predicted both the established R2 spectrum and the shape of the R3 spectrum. The predicted shape of the R3 spectrum corresponded well with the proposed tentative spectrum derived from spectrum simulations. Thus, results from two independent multivariate data analysis techniques strongly support the previous evidence that three radicals are indeed present in irradiated alanine samples.

Background: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) constitutes on average 10-15% of dementia in younger persons (≤65 years old), but can also affect older people. These patients demonstrate a decline in social conduct, and/or language aphasias, apathy, and loss of insight that is gradual and progressive. Preservation of dignity seems to be highly relevant both before and after admission to different types of institutionalized care, but the research is scant. From the perspective of close relatives, this study aims to develop knowledge related to dignified or undignified care of patients with FTD and similar conditions., Methods: A qualitative, descriptive, and explorative design were employed to address the aims of this study. We interviewed nine relatives of people with FTD and similar conditions living in nursing homes, and two relatives of people living at home but attending day center 5 days a week., Results: Relatives described the transition from being a close relative to someone who had little influence or knowledge of what constituted the care and the daily life of their loved ones. According to relatives' descriptions, patients are deprived of dignity in various ways: through limited interaction with peers and close relatives, limited confirmation of identity through staff who know them well, lack of possibilities for making autonomous decisions or entertaining meaningful roles or activities. Examples provided from the day care centres show how dignity is maintained through identity-strengthening activities conducted in different places, under various kinds of supervision and care, and together with people representing different roles and functions., Conclusions: Maintaining a link with the world outside the institution, through closer cooperation between the institution and family members, and/or by the use of day care centres, seems to facilitate prevention of many of the factors that may threaten dignified care.

Background: Tumour delineation is a challenging, time-consuming and complex part of radiotherapy planning. In this study, an automatic method for delineating locally advanced cervical cancers was developed using a machine learning approach., Materials and Methods: A method for tumour segmentation based on image voxel classification using Fisher?s Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) was developed. This was applied to magnetic resonance (MR) images of 78 patients with locally advanced cervical cancer. The segmentation was based on multiparametric MRI consisting of T2- weighted (T2w), T1-weighted (T1w) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) sequences, and included intensity and spatial information from the images. The model was trained and assessed using delineations made by two radiologists., Results: Segmentation based on T2w or T1w images resulted in mean sensitivity and specificity of 94% and 52%, respectively. Including DCE-MR images improved the segmentation model?s performance significantly, giving mean sensitivity and specificity of 85?93%. Comparisons with radiologists? tumour delineations gave Dice similarity coefficients of up to 0.44., Conclusion: Voxel classification using a machine learning approach is a flexible and fully automatic method for tumour delineation. Combining all relevant MR image series resulted in high sensitivity and specificity. Moreover, the presented method can be extended to include additional imaging modalities.

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between caregivers and care receivers, defined as home-dwelling family members with dementia. We used a self-rating questionnaire, the Felt Expressed Emotion Rating Scale (FEERS; 6 simple questions), to measure caregiver perceptions of the care receiver's criticisms (CCs) and emotional overinvolvement (EOI) toward the caregiver. We performed factor analyses to rank single items on the FEERS pertaining to CC and EOI. We included 208 caregiver/care receiver pairs. Logistic regression analyses tested associations between FEERS items and caregiver and care receiver variables. The main contributors to caregiver perceptions of CC were the caregiver's own distress and the amount of time spent with the care receiver. Socially distressed caregivers perceived the care receiver as emotionally overinvolved. When offering a psychosocial intervention, a tailored program should target the caregiver's perceived relationship with the family member and the caregiver's distress. The program should also endeavor to give the caretaker more opportunities for leisure time.

Background: Solid tumors are known to be spatially heterogeneous. Detection of treatment-resistant tumor regions can improve clinical outcome, by enabling implementation of strategies targeting such regions. In this study, K-means clustering was used to group voxels in dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance images (DCE-MRI) of cervical cancers. The aim was to identify clusters reflecting treatment resistance that could be used for targeted radiotherapy with a dose-painting approach., Material and Methods: Eighty-one patients with locally advanced cervical cancer underwent DCE-MRI prior to chemoradiotherapy. The resulting image time series were fitted to two pharmacokinetic models, the Tofts model (yielding parameters K trans and ν e ) and the Brix model (A Brix , k ep and k el ). K-means clustering was used to group similar voxels based on either the pharmacokinetic parameter maps or the relative signal increase (RSI) time series. The associations between voxel clusters and treatment outcome (measured as locoregional control) were evaluated using the volume fraction or the spatial distribution of each cluster., Results: One voxel cluster based on the RSI time series was significantly related to locoregional control (adjusted p-value 0.048). This cluster consisted of low-enhancing voxels. We found that tumors with poor prognosis had this RSI-based cluster gathered into few patches, making this cluster a potential candidate for targeted radiotherapy. None of the voxels clusters based on Tofts or Brix parameter maps were significantly related to treatment outcome., Conclusion: We identified one group of tumor voxels significantly associated with locoregional relapse that could potentially be used for dose painting. This tumor voxel cluster was identified using the raw MRI time series rather than the pharmacokinetic maps.

The identification of interdicted nuclear or radioactive materials requires the application of dedicated techniques. In this work, a new approach for characterizing powder of uranium ore concentrates (UOCs) is presented. It is based on image texture analysis and multivariate data modelling. 26 different UOCs samples were evaluated applying the Angle Measure Technique (AMT) algorithm to extract textural features on samples images acquired at 250× and 1000× magnification by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). At both magnifications, this method proved effective to classify the different types of UOC powder based on the surface characteristics that depend on particle size, homogeneity, and graininess and are related to the composition and processes used in the production facilities. Using the outcome data from the application of the AMT algorithm, the total explained variance was higher than 90% with Principal Component Analysis (PCA), while partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) applied only on the 14 black colour UOCs powder samples, allowed their classification only on the basis of their surface texture features (sensitivity>0.6; specificity>0.6). This preliminary study shows that this method was able to distinguish samples with similar composition, but obtained from different facilities. The mean angle spectral data obtained by the image texture analysis using the AMT algorithm can be considered as a specific fingerprint or signature of UOCs and could be used for nuclear forensic investigation., (Copyright © 2016 The Authors. The structure of sludge is closely associated with the process of wastewater treatment. Synthetic dyestuff wastewater and sewage were coagulated using the PAX and PIX methods, and electro-coagulated on aluminium electrodes. The processes of wastewater treatment were supported with an organic polymer. The images of surface structures of the investigated sludge were obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The software image analysis permitted obtaining plots log A vs. log P, wherein A is the surface area and P is the perimeter of the object, for individual objects comprised in the structure of the sludge. The resulting database confirmed the 'self-similarity' of the structural objects in the studied groups of sludge, which enabled calculating their fractal dimension and proposing models for these objects. A quantitative description of the sludge aggregates permitted proposing a mechanism of the processes responsible for their formation. In the paper, also, the impact of the structure of the investigated sludge on the process of sedimentation, and dehydration of the thickened sludge after sedimentation, was discussed.

Dynamic contrast enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) provides insight into the vascular properties of tissue. Pharmacokinetic models may be fitted to DCE-MRI uptake patterns, enabling biologically relevant interpretations. The aim of our study was to determine whether treatment outcome for 81 patients with locally advanced cervical cancer could be predicted from parameters of the Brix pharmacokinetic model derived from pre-chemoradiotherapy DCE-MRI. First-order statistical features of the Brix parameters were used. In addition, texture analysis of Brix parameter maps was done by constructing gray level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM) from the maps. Clinical factors and first- and second-order features were used as explanatory variables for support vector machine (SVM) classification, with treatment outcome as response. Classification models were validated using leave-one-out cross-model validation. A random value permutation test was used to evaluate model significance. Features derived from first-order statistics could not discriminate between cured and relapsed patients (specificity 0%-20%, p-values close to unity). However, second-order GLCM features could significantly predict treatment outcome with accuracies (~70%) similar to the clinical factors tumor volume and stage (69%). The results indicate that the spatial relations within the tumor, quantified by texture features, were more suitable for outcome prediction than first-order features.

Aims: To describe and compare the perceived social provision for a group reporting never feeling lonely with that of a group reporting feeling lonely and to explore the meaning of loneliness., Subjects: Participants (N = 101) were recruited from geriatric wards. Inclusion criteria were as follows: aged 65 years or more, the absence of dementia, one or more chronic physical disorders and plans to be discharged from the hospital to their home. The mean age was 81.3 years (range: 65-96 years), 68% were women, and 66% lived alone., Measures: Assessments of social provisions and loneliness were collected by a subjective report using the Social Provision Scale (SPS), and the Montgomery-Aasberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) was used to assess depression. The participants were also asked whether they felt lonely and were then asked to describe the meaning of loneliness if they had indicated feeling lonely. Narratives were then condensed by the participants into short sentences., Results: Seventy-five per cent of the participants reported feeling lonely, of these 54% were living alone, and 18% identified with depression. Three subscales of SPS scores were significantly lower in the lonely group: attachment (p < 0.001), a sense of reliable alliance (p = 0.001) and the obtaining of guidance (p = 0.01). The overall view of the experience of loneliness was dominated by emptiness and negative emotions. The following themes were identified: Emotions were dominated by sadness, anxiety and restlessness, anger and guilt. Relationships were dominated by being left alone, being confined and feeling useless. Existential dimensions were characterised by emptiness, endless boredom, isolation and the potential for change., Conclusion: The study shows that loneliness is prevalent among older people suffering from chronic physical illness and confirms the complexity of the concept. Plants in Nordic regions can be more ozone sensitive at a given ozone concentration than plants at lower latitudes. A recent study shows that the Nordic summer photoperiod, particularly the dim nighttime light, can increase visible foliar injury and alter leaf transpiration in subterranean clover. Effects of photoperiod on the ozone sensitivity of white and red clover cultivars adapted to Nordic conditions were investigated. Although ozone induced visible foliar injury and leaf transpirational changes in white clover, the effects were independent of photoperiod. In red clover, ozone combined with a long photoperiod with dim nights (8 nights) induced more severe visible injuries than with a short photoperiod. Furthermore, transpirational changes in red clover depended on photoperiod. Thus, a long photoperiod can increase ozone sensitivity differently in clover cultivars with different degrees of adaptation to northern conditions, suggesting that ozone indices used in risk analysis should take this effect into account.

Background: Few population-based studies have examined the whole range of subthreshold syndromes and disorders of anxiety and depression in older people., Aims: To investigate the co-occurrence of anxiety and depressive syndromes in older people. Associations between these conditions and personal and environmental factors are examined., Method: MRC CFAS included 13,004, age 65 years and above, who completed the initial screening interview. A stratified random subsample of 2,640 participated in the assessment interview where the Geriatric Mental State Examination (GMS) was administered. The AGECAT diagnostic system was used to generate subthreshold and disorder-level of anxiety and depression as well as the combination of these into eight syndromes categories plus a group without any of the syndromes categories. Prevalences, unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios are calculated for the syndrome categories in relation to cross-sectional personal and environmental factors, and odds ratios of subthreshold and disorders level are estimated., Results: The overall prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders are 3.1% and 9.7% respectively. The overall prevalence of either anxiety or depressive disorder (anxiety disorder with subthreshold depression, mixed anxiety and depressive disorder with subthreshold anxiety) where they overlapped is 8.4%. The highest Odds Ratios unadjusted and adjusted for age and gender, of anxiety and depressive disorders and significant for trend are found for increasing disability. Disability has a strong relationship with all the co-morbid syndrome categories. In all analyses women showed significant higher estimates than men., Conclusions: Our study demonstrated high estimates where anxiety and depression occurred in parallel both as disorders and as subthreshold syndromes.

The EUROP classification system is based on visual assessment of carcass conformation and fatness. The first objective was to test the EUROP classification repeatability and accuracy of the national senior assessors of the system in Norway. The second objective was to test the accuracy of the trained and certified abattoir EUROP classifiers in Norway relative to EU Commission's supervising assessors. The third and final objective was to test the accuracy of the EUROP classification system, as assessed by the National senior assessors, for prediction of lean meat, fat and bone percentage and lean meat in relation to bone ratio. The results showed that the repeatability and accuracy of the national senior assessors was good, achieving high correlations both for conformation and fatness. For the abattoir assessors, there were some systematic differences compared to EU Commission's assessors, but these differences were within limits accepted by EU Commission. The relationship between abattoir and national senior assessors was good, with only small systematic differences. This may suggest that there also is a systematic difference between the national senior assessors of the system and EU Commission's assessors. The EUROP system predicted lean meat percentage poorly (R(2)=0.407), with a prediction error for 3.027% lean. For fat and bone percentage, the results showed a fairly good prediction of fat percentage, but poorer for bone percentage, R(2)=0.796 and R(2)=0.450, respectively. The prediction error for fat and bone percentage was 2.300% and 2.125%, respectively. Lean: bone ratio was predicted poorly (R(2)=0.212), with a prediction error of 0.363 lean: bone ratio.

Background: In geriatric psychiatry assessment scales are often used in clinical praxis in the diagnostic work-up of mental disorders., Aim: To assess whether the state part of the STAI is useful as a case-finding instrument of mental disorders., Materials and Method: Data came from 70 non demented geriatric in-patients in stable clinical condition. Mean age was 83.3 years (range 64-96), and 74.3% were women. The 20-item STAI state instrument was used to measure current anxiety symptoms. Without knowledge of the score on STAI state a psychiatrist examined all patients and set diagnosis according to DSM-IV-TR criteria, but hierarchical rules were not used. Sensitivity, specificity, Likelihood ratio and accuracy were calculated for different cut-points of the mean sumscore on the STAI state., Results: 15.7% of the participants suffered from a mental disorder: GAD = 1, mixed anxiety-depression = 5, depression = 1, dysthymic = 1, adjustment disorder (mixed anxiety-depression) = 1, and personality disorder = 1. The mean STAI sumscore in this group was 56.3 compared with 39.2 in the 59 patients without any psychiatric diagnosis. The optimal cut-off score on the STAI mean sumscore corresponding to the highest accuracy of 0.87 was 55/54 with sensitivity 0.82, specificity 0.88, and LR + 6.8., Conclusion: The STAI state scale is a useful instrument for detecting a variety of mental disorders in older people. Background: A conspicuously high score on the state part of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) has been observed among geriatric inpatients who are neither demented nor critically ill; 43% of them had a sumscore that, according to Spielberger's criteria, would reflect clinically relevant anxiety symptoms., Objectives: To explore the reasons for this high score., Methods: 101 geriatric inpatients and 68 healthy controls of similar age, living at home and recruited through senior citizen centres participated in a controlled cross-sectional study., Results: High item-scores were more frequent on the symptom-negative items than on the symptom-positive items. Multi-group factor analysis produced two factors termed 'well-being' and 'nervousness', which had a moderate correlation (0.61). The intercept was much higher on 'well-being' than on 'nervousness', showing that a lack of well-being contributes significantly to the high score on the STAI. This confounds the sumscore. However, the geriatric inpatients nevertheless had a high score on the factor 'nervousness'. Female controls scored higher than males on both factors, whereas among the geriatric patients neither age nor gender related to them., Conclusions: The STAI state sumscore is a biased indicator of anxiety in geriatric inpatients owing to confounding by well-being. Objective: To examine the prevalence of anxiety symptoms in hospitalized geriatric patients., Design: Controlled cross-sectional study., Subjects: Ninety-eight geriatric in-patients and 68 healthy home-dwelling controls of similar age recruited from senior citizen centres., Outcome Measure: Anxiety measured as a current emotional state by Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)., Results: The geriatric patients scored significantly higher than the controls. Applying Spielberger's recommended cut-off of 39/40 on the STAI sumscore, 41% of the female and 47% of the male geriatric patients might be suspected of suffering from significant anxiety symptoms. Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease tended to score higher; otherwise no relationship was found between the STAI sumscore and type of chronic somatic disease, nor between the STAI sumscore and number of drugs in regular use., Conclusions: STAI proved feasible for use in the elderly. The scoring on the STAI is high in geriatric in-patients. The present work investigates the possibility of constructing a multivariate calibration model to predict the composition of ground meat with respect to animal species, based on intensity profiles from isoelectric focusing of water-soluble proteins in mixtures of ground meat. Samples containing various amounts of beef, pork and turkey meat were analyzed by isoelectric focusing in immobilized pH-gradients. The gels were photographed and the images transferred to a digital format. The digital images were processed in order to reduce background and optimize signal strength. Resulting gel profiles were analyzed by multivariate regression allowing the determination of sample composition with prediction errors close to 10%.
