In this work, we introduce a spatial branching process to model the growth of the mycelial network of a filamentous fungus. In this model, each filament is described by the position of its tip, the trajectory of which is solution to a stochastic differential equation with a drift term which depends on all the other trajectories. Each filament can branch either at its tip or along its length, that is to say at some past position of its tip, at some time- and space-dependent rates. It can stop growing at some rate which also depends on the positions of the other tips. We first construct the measure-valued process corresponding to this dynamics, then we study its large population limit and we characterise the limiting process as the weak solution to a system of partial differential equations., Comment: 34 pages

We present the first measurement of the missing energy due to nuclear effects in monoenergetic, muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon, originating from $K^+ \rightarrow \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ decay-at-rest ($E_{\nu_\mu}=235.5$ MeV), performed with the JSNS$^2$ liquid scintillator based experiment. Towards characterizing the neutrino interaction, ostensibly $\nu_\mu n \rightarrow \mu^- p$ or $\nu_\mu$$^{12}\mathrm{C}$ $\rightarrow \mu^-$$^{12}\mathrm{N}$, and in analogy to similar electron scattering based measurements, we define the missing energy as the energy transferred to the nucleus ($\omega$) minus the kinetic energy of the outgoing proton(s), $E_{m} \equiv \omega-\sum T_p$, and relate this to visible energy in the detector, $E_{m}=E_{\nu_\mu}~(235.5~\mathrm{MeV})-m_\mu~(105.7~\mathrm{MeV}) - E_{vis}$. The missing energy, which is naively expected to be zero in the absence of nuclear effects (e.g. nucleon separation energy, Fermi momenta, and final-state interactions), is uniquely sensitive to many aspects of the interaction, and has previously been inaccessible with neutrinos. The shape-only, differential cross section measurement reported, based on a $(77\pm3)$% pure double-coincidence KDAR signal (621 total events), provides an important benchmark for models and event generators at 100s-of-MeV neutrino energies, characterized by the difficult-to-model transition region between neutrino-nucleus and neutrino-nucleon scattering, and relevant for applications in nuclear physics, neutrino oscillation measurements, and Type-II supernova studies.

The afterglows of gamma-ray bursts are non-thermal electron synchrotron emissions from relativistic shocks. The origin of strong magnetic field in the emission region remains elusive, and two field amplification mechanisms via the plasma kinetic and magnetohydrodynamic instabilities have been discussed. The polarimetric observations are a powerful probe to distinguish these two mechanisms. So far, most theoretical works have focused on the former mechanism and constructed afterglow polarization models with microscopic-scale turbulence whose coherence length is much smaller than the thickness of the blast wave. In this work, focusing on the latter mechanism, we utilize our semi-analytic model of the synchrotron polarization with large-scale turbulence whose coherence length is comparable to the thickness of the blast wave to investigate the effect of magnetic field anisotropy and the observer viewing angle. We find that the polarization in our large-scale turbulence model can exhibit both behaviors characteristic of the microscopic-scale turbulence model and those not seen in the microscopic-scale model. Then we find that the large-scale model could explain all the polarimetric observational data to date that seem to be forward shock emission. We also examine the effect of ordered-field component, and find that polarization degree and polarization angle constant in time are realized only when the energy density ratio of the ordered and fluctuated components is $\gtrsim 50$. This study explores a new method in food development by utilizing AI including generative AI, aiming to craft products that delight the senses and resonate with consumers' emotions. The food ingredient recommendation approach used in this study can be considered as a form of multimodal generation in a broad sense, as it takes text as input and outputs food ingredient candidates. This Study focused on producing "Romance Bread," a collection of breads infused with flavors that reflect the nuances of a romantic Japanese television program. We analyzed conversations from TV programs and lyrics from songs featuring fruits and sweets to recommend ingredients that express romantic feelings. Based on these recommendations, the bread developers then considered the flavoring of the bread and developed new bread varieties. The research included a tasting evaluation involving 31 participants and interviews with the product developers. Findings indicate a notable correlation between tastes generated by AI and human preferences. In this paper, we propose a recipe for B-model computation of genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants of Calabi-Yau and Fano Projective Hypersurfaces. Our formalism can be applied equally to both Calabi-Yau and Fano cases. We present the first results from GALAXY CRUISE, a community (or citizen) science project based on data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). The current paradigm of galaxy evolution suggests that galaxies grow hierarchically via mergers, but our observational understanding of the role of mergers is still limited. The data from HSC-SSP are ideally suited to improve our understanding with improved identifications of interacting galaxies thanks to the superb depth and image quality of HSC-SSP. We have launched a community science project, GALAXY CRUISE, in 2019 and collected over 2 million independent classifications of 20,686 galaxies at z < 0.2. We first characterize the accuracy of the participants' classifications and demonstrate that it surpasses previous studies based on shallower imaging data. We then investigate various aspects of interacting galaxies in detail. We show that there is a clear sign of enhanced activities of super massive black holes and star formation in interacting galaxies compared to those in isolated galaxies. The enhancement seems particularly strong for galaxies undergoing violent merger. We also show that the mass growth rate inferred from our results is roughly consistent with the observed evolution of the stellar mass function. The 2nd season of GALAXY CRUISE is currently under way and we conclude with future prospects. Specific antiferromagnetic (AF) spin configurations generate large anomalous Hall effects (AHEs) even at zero magnetic field through nonvanishing Berry curvature in momentum space. In addition to restrictions on AF structures, suitable control of AF domains is essential to observe this effect without cancellations among its domains; therefore, compatible materials remain limited. Here we show that an orthorhombic noncollinear AF material, NbMnP, acquired AF structure-based AHE and controllability of the AF domains. Theoretical calculations indicated that a large Hall conductivity of $\sim230$ $\Omega^{-1}$cm$^{-1}$ originated from the AF structure of NbMnP. Symmetry considerations explained the production of a small net magnetization, whose anisotropy enabled the generation and cancellation of the Hall responses using magnetic fields in different directions. Finally, asymmetric hysteresis in NbMnP shows potential for development of controllability of responses in AF materials., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, including supplementary information

For an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ we show that there are infinitely many cyclic sextic extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$ such that the Mordell-Weil group $E(K)$ has rank greater than the subgroup of $E(K)$ generated by all the $E(F)$ for the proper subfields $F \subset K$. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous transients in the universe and are utilized as probes of early stars, gravitational wave counterparts, and collisionless shock physics. In spite of studies on polarimetry of GRBs in individual wavelengths that characterized intriguing properties of prompt emission and afterglow, no coordinated multi-wavelength measurements have yet been performed. Here, we report the first coordinated simultaneous polarimetry in the optical and radio bands for the afterglow associated with the typical long GRB 191221B. Our observations successfully caught the radio emission, which is not affected by synchrotron self-absorption, and show that the emission is depolarized in the radio band compared to the optical one. Our simultaneous polarization angle measurement and temporal polarization monitoring indicate the existence of cool electrons that increase the estimate of jet kinetic energy by a factor of $>$ 4 for this GRB afterglow. Further coordinated multi-wavelength polarimetric campaigns would improve our understanding of the total jet energies and magnetic field configurations in the emission regions of various types of GRBs, which are required to comprehend the mass scales of their progenitor systems and the physics of collisionless shocks., Comment: Author's version. 41 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

Afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are emitted from expanding forward shocks, which are expected to have magnetic field much stronger than the interstellar field, although the origin of the field is a long-standing problem. Two field amplification mechanisms, plasma kinetic instabilities and magnetohydrodynamic instabilities, have been discussed so far. The coherence length scales of the fields amplified by these two processes are different by $7-10$ orders of magnitudes, and the polarimetric observations may distinguish them. We construct a semi-analytic model of the forward shock afterglow polarization under the assumption of hydrodynamic-scale turbulent magnetic field. We perform numerical calculations of synchrotron polarization for the isotropic turbulence and the zero viewing angle. We find that the polarization degrees are $ \sim1~\%$ when the field coherence length scale in the fluid comoving frame is of the order of the thickness of the shocked regions. This range of polarization degree is comparable to that of the observed late-phase optical afterglows. Our model also shows that the radio polarization degrees are comparable to the optical ones on average but can be higher than the optical ones at some time intervals. The polarization angles are shown to vary randomly and continuously. These polarimetric properties are clearly different from the case of plasma kinetic instability. Simultaneous polarimetric observations of GRB afterglows at the radio and optical bands have recently started, which will help us constrain the magnetic field amplification mechanism.

The self-trapping critical power of light propagation is one of the key physical quantities characterizing nonlinear-beam propagation. Above the critical power, the spatial and temporal profiles of the beam deviate from its original shapes. Therefore, the critical power is considered an important indicator in nonlinear optical phenomena, such as filamentation and laser processing. However, although the concept of the critical power has been established for fundamental waves, it remains unclear if the power-dependent phenomena can also be observed in harmonic generation because of the complex interplay of nonlinear-propagation effects and ionization-plasma effects. In this study, we find the critical power for the third-harmonic generation; the criterion for whether or not temporal-pulse collapse occurs in the third-harmonic generation is determined only by the incident power. Experiments show that a certain incident power exists, at which the third-harmonic power exerts a specific dependence, independent of the focusing conditions. This incident power is approximately six times lower than the self-trapping critical power of the fundamental pulse, which indicates that it is unique to the third-harmonic generation. Numerical calculations reveal that at this incident power, the third-harmonic pulse begins to collapse temporally. Furthermore, the numerical calculations reproduce the experimental results without the nonlinear effects of the fundamental pulse, dispersion effect, and ionization-plasma effects. This shows that the pulse collapse is due to the interference effects from the third-order nonlinear term, which disappears after long-distance propagation due to phase mismatch, and higher-order nonlinear terms. The time series of light reflected from exoplanets by future direct imaging can provide spatial information with respect to the planetary surface. We apply sparse modeling to the retrieval method that disentangles the spatial and spectral information from multi-band reflected light curves termed as spin-orbit unmixing. We use the $\ell_1$-norm and the Total Squared Variation norm as regularization terms for the surface distribution. Applying our technique to a toy model of cloudless Earth, we show that our method can infer sparse and continuous surface distributions and also unmixed spectra without prior knowledge of the planet surface. We also apply the technique to the real Earth data as observed by DSCOVR/EPIC. We determined the representative components that can be interpreted as cloud and ocean. Additionally, we found two components that resembled the distribution of land. One of the components captures the Sahara Desert, and the other roughly corresponds to vegetation although their spectra are still contaminated by clouds. Sparse modeling significantly improves the geographic retrieval, in particular, of cloud and leads to higher resolutions for other components when compared with spin-orbit unmixing using Tikhonov regularization., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
