Abstract

We present 294 pulsars found in GeV data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Another 33 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered in deep radio searches of LAT sources will likely reveal pulsations once phase-connected rotation ephemerides are achieved. A further dozen optical and/or X-ray binary systems co-located with LAT sources also likely harbor gamma-ray MSPs. This catalog thus reports roughly 340 gamma-ray pulsars and candidates, 10% of all known pulsars, compared to $\leq 11$ known before Fermi. Half of the gamma-ray pulsars are young. Of these, the half that are undetected in radio have a broader Galactic latitude distribution than the young radio-loud pulsars. The others are MSPs, with 6 undetected in radio. Overall, >235 are bright enough above 50 MeV to fit the pulse profile, the energy spectrum, or both. For the common two-peaked profiles, the gamma-ray peak closest to the magnetic pole crossing generally has a softer spectrum. The spectral energy distributions tend to narrow as the spindown power $\dot E$ decreases to its observed minimum near $10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$, approaching the shape for synchrotron radiation from monoenergetic electrons. We calculate gamma-ray luminosities when distances are available. Our all-sky gamma-ray sensitivity map is useful for population syntheses. The electronic catalog version provides gamma-ray pulsar ephemerides, properties and fit results to guide and be compared with modeling results., Comment: 142 pages. Abstract

An incremental version of the fourth catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected by the Fermi-Large Area Telescope is presented. This version (4LAC-DR3) derives from the third data release of the 4FGL catalog based on 12 years of E>50 MeV gamma-ray data, where the spectral parameters, spectral energy distributions (SEDs), yearly light curves, and associations have been updated for all sources. The new reported AGNs include 587 blazar candidates and four radio galaxies. We describe the properties of the new sample and outline changes affecting the previously published one. We also introduce two new parameters in this release, namely the peak energy of the SED high-energy component and the corresponding flux. These parameters allow an assessment of the Compton dominance, the ratio of the Inverse-Compton to the synchrotron peak luminosities, without relying on X-ray data., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. Abstract

We present an incremental version (4FGL-DR3, for Data Release 3) of the fourth Fermi-LAT catalog of gamma-ray sources. Based on the first twelve years of science data in the energy range from 50 MeV to 1 TeV, it contains 6658 sources. The analysis improves on that used for the 4FGL catalog over eight years of data: more sources are fit with curved spectra, we introduce a more robust spectral parameterization for pulsars, and we extend the spectral points to 1 TeV. The spectral parameters, spectral energy distributions, and associations are updated for all sources. Light curves are rebuilt for all sources with 1 yr intervals (not 2 month intervals). Among the 5064 original 4FGL sources, 16 were deleted, 112 are formally below the detection threshold over 12 yr (but are kept in the list), while 74 are newly associated, 10 have an improved association, and seven associations were withdrawn. Pulsars are split explicitly between young and millisecond pulsars. Pulsars and binaries newly detected in LAT sources, as well as more than 100 newly classified blazars, are reported. We add three extended sources and 1607 new point sources, mostly just above the detection threshold, among which eight are considered identified, and 699 have a plausible counterpart at other wavelengths. We discuss degree-scale residuals to the global sky model and clusters of soft unassociated point sources close to the Galactic plane, which are possibly related to limitations of the interstellar emission model and missing extended sources., Comment: accepted in ApJS; follow-up paper to 1902.10045

Abstract

Background: In the randomized, phase 3, SUSA‐301 trial, celecoxib‐tramadol co‐crystal (CTC) provided significantly greater analgesia compared with celecoxib, tramadol, or placebo in adults with acute, moderate‐to‐severe, postoperative pain. This post hoc, secondary analysis further evaluated the use of rescue medication and the incidence of treatment‐emergent adverse events (TEAEs). Methods: Patients (N = 637) were randomized 2:2:2:1 to receive oral CTC 200 mg twice daily (BID; n = 184), tramadol 50 mg four times daily (QID; n = 183), celecoxib 100 mg BID (n = 181), or placebo QID (n = 89). Post hoc analyses were conducted on the use of rescue medications up to 4 and 48 h post‐study drug dose, stratified by baseline pain intensity (moderate/severe), and on the incidence of TEAEs, stratified by rescue medication use. Results: A significantly lower proportion of patients received any rescue medication within 4 h post‐study dose with CTC (49.5%) versus tramadol (61.7%, p = 0.0178), celecoxib (65.2%, p = 0.0024), and placebo (75.3%, p = 0.0001); this was also seen for oxycodone use. Fewer patients in the CTC group received ≥3 doses of rescue medication compared with the other groups, irrespective of baseline pain intensity. In patients who did not receive opioid rescue medication, CTC was associated with a lower incidence of nausea and vomiting TEAEs versus tramadol alone. In patients who received rescue oxycodone, the incidence of nausea was similar in the CTC and tramadol groups, and higher versus celecoxib and placebo. Conclusion: Celecoxib‐tramadol co‐crystal was associated with reduced rescue medication use and an acceptable tolerability profile compared with tramadol or celecoxib alone in adults with acute, moderate‐to‐severe, postoperative pain. Abstract

DIRAC (Distributed Infrastructure with Remote Agent Control) is a general framework for the management of tasks over distributed heterogeneous computing environments. It has been originally developed to support the production activities of the LHCb (Large Hadron Collider Beauty) experiment and today is extensively used by several particle physics and biology communities. Current ($Fermi$ Large Area Telescope -- LAT) and planned (Cherenkov Telescope Array -- CTA) new generation astrophysical/cosmological experiments, with very large processing and storage needs, are currently investigating the usability of DIRAC in this context. Each of these use cases has some peculiarities: $Fermi$-LAT will interface DIRAC to its own workflow system to allow the access to the grid resources, while CTA is using DIRAC as workflow management system for Monte Carlo production and analysis on the grid. We describe the prototype effort that we lead toward deploying a DIRAC solution for some aspects of $Fermi$-LAT and CTA needs., Comment: proceedings to CHEP 2013 conference : http://www.chep2013.org/

Abstract

X-ray polarimetry, sometimes alone, and sometimes coupled to spectral and temporal variability measurements and to imaging, allows a wealth of physical phenomena in astrophysics to be studied. X-ray polarimetry investigates the acceleration process, for example, including those typical of magnetic reconnection in solar flares, but also emission in the strong magnetic fields of neutron stars and white dwarfs. It detects scattering in asymmetric structures such as accretion disks and columns, and in the so-called molecular torus and ionization cones. In addition, it allows fundamental physics in regimes of gravity and of magnetic field intensity not accessible to experiments on the Earth to be probed. Finally, models that describe fundamental interactions (e.g. quantum gravity and the extension of the Standard Model) can be tested. We describe in this paper the X-ray Imaging Polarimetry Explorer (XIPE), proposed in June 2012 to the first ESA call for a small mission with a launch in 2017 but not selected. XIPE is composed of two out of the three existing JET-X telescopes with two Gas Pixel Detectors (GPD) filled with a He-DME mixture at their focus and two additional GPDs filled with pressurized Ar-DME facing the sun. The Minimum Detectable Polarization is 14 % at 1 mCrab in 10E5 s (2-10 keV) and 0.6 % for an X10 class flare. The Half Energy Width, measured at PANTER X-ray test facility (MPE, Germany) with JET-X optics is 24 arcsec. XIPE takes advantage of a low-earth equatorial orbit with Malindi as down-link station and of a Mission Operation Center (MOC) at INPE (Brazil)., Comment: 49 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables. Abstract

New data are presented on the p(e,e'p)\pi^0 reaction at threshold at a four-momentum transfer of Q^2=0.05 GeV^2/c^2. The data were taken with the three-spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The complete center of mass solid angle was covered up to a center of mass energy of 4 MeV above threshold. Combined with measurements at three different values of the virtual photon polarization \epsilon, the structure functions \sigma_T, \sigma_L, \sigma_{TT}, and \sigma_{TL} are determined. The results are compared with calculations in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory and with a phenomenological model. Abstract

We present an incremental version (4FGL-DR3, for Data Release 3) of the fourth Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) catalog of γ-ray sources. Based on the first 12 years of science data in the energy range from 50 MeV to 1 TeV, it contains 6658 sources. The analysis improves on that used for the 4FGL catalog over eight years of data: more sources are fit with curved spectra, we introduce a more robust spectral parameterization for pulsars, and we extend the spectral points to 1 TeV. The spectral parameters, spectral energy distributions, and associations are updated for all sources. Light curves are rebuilt for all sources with 1 yr intervals (not 2 month intervals). Among the 5064 original 4FGL sources, 16 were deleted, 112 are formally below the detection threshold over 12 yr (but are kept in the list), while 74 are newly associated, 10 have an improved association, and seven associations were withdrawn. Pulsars are split explicitly between young and millisecond pulsars. Pulsars and binaries newly detected in LAT sources, as well as more than 100 newly classified blazars, are reported. We add three extended sources and 1607 new point sources, mostly just above the detection threshold, among which eight are considered identified, and 699 have a plausible counterpart at other wavelengths. We discuss the degree-scale residuals to the global sky model and clusters of soft unassociated point sources close to the Galactic plane, which are possibly related to limitations of the interstellar emission model and missing extended sources.

Abstract

Background: Celecoxib‐tramadol co‐crystal (CTC) is a first‐in‐class analgesic co‐crystal of celecoxib and racemic tramadol with an improved pharmacologic profile, conferred by the co‐crystal structure, compared with its active constituents administered alone/concomitantly. Aim: We evaluated CTC in moderate‐to‐severe acute postoperative pain. Materials and Methods: This randomized, double‐blind, factorial, active‐ and placebo‐controlled phase 3 trial (NCT03108482) was conducted at 6 US clinical research centers. Adults with moderate‐to‐severe acute pain following bunionectomy with osteotomy were randomized to oral CTC (200 mg [112 mg celecoxib/88 mg rac‐tramadol hydrochloride] every 12 h), tramadol (50 mg every 6 h), celecoxib (100 mg every 12 h), or placebo for 48 h. Patients, investigators, and personnel were blinded to assignment. The primary endpoint was the 0–48 h sum of pain intensity differences (SPID0–48) in all randomized patients. Pain intensity was assessed on a 0–10 numerical rating scale (NRS). Safety was analyzed in patients who received study medication. Funded by ESTEVE Pharmaceuticals. Results: In 2017 (March to November), 1323 patients were screened and 637 randomized to CTC (n = 184), tramadol (n = 183), celecoxib (n = 181), or placebo (n = 89). Mean baseline NRS was 6.7 in all active groups. CTC had a significantly greater effect on SPID0–48 (least‐squares mean: −139.1 [95% confidence interval: −151.8, −126.5]) than tramadol (−109.1 [−121.7, −96.4]; p < 0.001), celecoxib (−103.7 [−116.4, −91.0]; p < 0.001), or placebo (−74.6 [−92.5, −56.6]; p < 0.001). Total treatment‐emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were 358 for CTC and 394 for tramadol. Drug‐related TEAEs occurred in 37.7% patients in the CTC group, compared with 48.6% in the tramadol group. There were no serious TEAEs/deaths. Conclusion: CTC provided greater analgesia than comparable daily doses of tramadol and celecoxib, with similar tolerability to tramadol. Abstract

Projects attempting the direct detection of WIMP dark matter share the common problem of eliminating sources of background or using techniques to distinguish background events from true signals. Although experiments such as DarkSide have achieved essentially background free exposures through careful choice of materials and application of efficient veto techniques, there will still be a high burden of proof to convince the greater scientific community when a discovery is claimed. A directional signature in the data would provide extremely strong evidence to distinguish a true WIMP signal from that of an isotropic background. Two-phase argon time projection chambers (TPCs) provide an experimental apparatus which can both be scaled to the ton-scale size required to accommodate the low cross-section expected for WIMP interactions and have an anisotropy that could be exploited to evaluate the polar angles of the resulting nuclear recoils from WIMP collisions with target nuclei. Our studies show that even a modest resolution in the polar angle reconstruction would offer a powerful tool to detect a directional signature. In this contribution, the status of the ReD experiment, which is under construction at Naples University, will be also shown. The aim of the project is to assess and enhance the directionality of two-phase argon TPCs. ReD will use a small TPC exposed to a beam of mono-energetic neutrons to study the so called “columnar recombination” in liquid argon. This development could have high impact on the future experiments in the field, opening up the potential to find conclusive evidence for dark matter or disprove the WIMP hypothesis at and above the mass range explored by planned accelerator experiments.

Abstract

Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are old neutron stars that spin hundreds of times per second and appear to pulsate as their emission beams cross our line of sight. To date, radio pulsations have been detected from all rotation-powered MSPs. In an attempt to discover radio-quiet gamma-ray MSPs, we used the aggregated power from the computers of tens of thousands of volunteers participating in the Einstein@Home distributed computing project to search for pulsations from unidentified gamma-ray sources in Fermi Large Area Telescope data. This survey discovered two isolated MSPs, one of which is the only known rotation-powered MSP to remain undetected in radio observations. These gamma-ray MSPs were discovered in completely blind searches without prior constraints from other observations, raising hopes for detecting MSPs from a predicted Galactic bulge population., This work was supported by the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft through an Emmy Noether Research Grant [no. Abstract

Due to their proximity, high dark-matter (DM) content, and apparent absence of non-thermal processes, Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies (dSphs) are excellent targets for the indirect detection of DM. Recently, eight new dSph candidates were discovered using the first year of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We searched for gamma-ray emission coincident with the positions of these new objects in six years of Fermi Large Area Telescope data. We found no significant excesses of gamma-ray emission. Under the assumption that the DES candidates are dSphs with DM halo properties similar to the known dSphs, we computed individual and combined limits on the velocity-averaged DM annihilation cross section for these new targets. If the estimated DM content of these dSph candidates is confirmed, they will constrain the annihilation cross section to lie below the thermal relic cross section for DM particles with masses 20 GeV annihilating via the bb¯ or τ+τ− channels.

Abstract

Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit den REGIONALEN in Nordrhein-Westfalen als Instrument regionalisierter Strukturpolitik. Im Rahmen der mittlerweile sechsten REGIONALEN präsentiert die Region Köln/Bonn im Jahr 2010 die Ergebnisse eines mehrjährigen Kooperationsprozesses. Die „Zukunftssicherung“ wurde zum zentralen Thema des zeitlich befristeten, projektorientierten Ansatzes gemacht. Bei den beteiligten Akteuren und der Öffentlichkeit konnte sich die REGIONALE 2010 als positives Schlüsselsymbol etablieren. Als Erfolgsfaktoren lassen sich die Organisations- und Kooperationsstrukturen, die Förderung und gebaute bzw. erlebbare Erfolge sowie deren Vermarktbarkeit identifizieren. Mit hohem Aufwand gelingt es, in der heterogenen Region ein gemeinsames Agieren vieler zentraler Akteure zu erzeugen, was sich auch in der frühzeitigen Festlegung auf eine Nachfolgestruktur manifestiert. Die Chancen stehen gut, dass die im Rahmen der „Institutionalisierung auf Zeit“ geschaffenen Grundlagen sowohl auf der Projekt- als auch auf der programmatischen und organisatorischen Ebene über das Präsentationsjahr hinaus tragen. This paper is concerned with the programme of REGIONALE events organised in North Rhine-Westphalia as an instrument of regionalised structure policy. Within the framework of what is now the sixth REGIONALE, in 2010 the Cologne/Bonn region will present the results of a process of co-operation which stretches back over many years. The central theme chosen for this project-based and time-limited programme is “Safeguarding the Future”. REGIONALE 2010 has been able to establish itself both among the actors involved and among the general public as a positive and emblematic symbol. The factors behind its success can be identified as the organisational and co-operative structures it employs, the funding it receives, as well as the physical and tangible successes it presents, and the manner in which they are marketed. With a great deal of effort, and at considerable expense, the REGIONALE is able to generate joint action within this heterogeneous region on the part of a host of key actors; this is manifested not least in the success in deciding on a follow-up structure at a relatively early point in the process. There is every likelihood that the foundation which was established as part of what is termed “long-term institutionalisation” – both at the project level and at the programme and organisational level – will remain in place after the presentation year comes to an end.

Abstract

This work reports on the design and performance of a 500 Hz picosecond laser system specifically developed for sum-frequency spectroscopy of molecular vibrations at interfaces, and on its applications to the study of potential-dependent CO adsorption at the Pt(111)/aqueous electrolyte interface. The experimental setup consists of a picosecond Nd:YAG laser system operating with a pulse frequency of 500 Hz, and on optical parametric generator/amplifier system for the generation of tunable picosecond pulses in the medium infrared. Laser pulses at 1.064 µm with 0.9 mJ pulse energy and about 25 ps pulse duration are produced by regenerative amplification of picosecond pulses from a laser diode-pumped, mode-locked Nd:YAG oscillator in a laser diode-pumped Nd:YAG amplifier at a repetition rate of 500 Hz. Since much larger pulse energies are required for efficient frequency conversion in the parametric generator/amplifier system, the avialable laser pulse energy at 1.064 µm is increased to a level of about 9 mJ by one-pass amplification in two flashlamp-pumped Nd:YAG laser amplifiers. Spectrum and autocorrelation traces indicate considerable self-phase modulation of the amplified pulses which have a pulse duration as short as 12 ps. Tunable pulses in the medium infrared for vibrational spectroscopy are obtained by optical parametric amplification of near-infrared seed pulses in two angle-tuned AgGaS2 crystals pumped with a fraction of the energy of the amplified Nd:YAG laser pulses. The seed pulses which are tunable between 1.2 and 1.7 µm are produced by optical parametric generation and two-pass amplification in two angle-tuned barium borate (BBO) crystals pumped by the second harmonic (0.532 µm) of the remaining fraction of the amplified Nd:YAG laser pulses. The spectrally broad-band parametric emission of the BBO crystals is narrowed down with a diffraction grating between the two passes of amplification. The optical parametric system produces at a repetition rate of 500 Hz high-power infrared pulses tunable from 1.2 to 8.3 µm with pulse durations of approximately 9 ps, bandwidths of typically 4 cm^(-1) in the medium infrared, and pulse energies of 70 µJ at 5 µm and 160 µJ at 3.33 µm. The potential of this new laser system is demonstrated in infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG) experiments to study the potentail dependence of CO adsorption and CO adlayer phase transition at the Pt(111)/sulfuric acid interface. This Pt(111)/CO/electrolyte system has been selected as a well-defined and well-characterized model system for molecular chemisorption. Moreover, CO adsorption at Pt electrocatalysts is an important intermediate step in the electrooxidation of organic fuels such as methanol. In the SFG experiments of the present work the resonant excitation of the intramolecular stretching vibration of adsorbed CO molecules with tunable infrared pulses is up-converted to the sum-frequencv using 0.532 µm laser pulses. Experiments where performed on flame-tempered Pt(111) single crystal electrodes in a CO-saturated aqueous solution of 0.5 M H2SO4. When CO is adsorbed at a potential of 80 mV versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), resonances at approximately 1786 cm^(-1) and 2066 cm^(-1) are observed in the SFG spectra corresponding to CO adsorption at three-fold hollow sites and on-top sites, respectively. These bands are indicative of a (2x2) adsorption structure of CO as revealed in previous scanning tunneling microscopy studies of this system. A fast increase of the potential to 500 mV/RHE causes the appearance of new bands at approximately 1847 cm^(-1) and 2062 cm^(-1) which are characteristic of CO adsorption at (near-)bridge and (near-)on-top sites, respectively, of a (sqrt(19) x sqrt(19))R23.4° adsorption structure, and the disappearance of the bands of the (2x2) structure. When CO is adsorbed at 500 mV/RHE the SFG spectra show that the phase transition from the (2x2) to the (sqrt(19) x sqrt(19))R23.4° structure is completed within few minutes, while for adsorption at 600 mV/RHE the (2x2) structure is rather stable.

Abstract

The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is an international and multi-agency space mission that will study the cosmos in the energy range 20 MeV – 1 TeV. GLAST is an imaging gamma-ray telescope more much capable than instruments flown previously. The main instrument on board of the spacecraft is the Large Area Telescope (LAT), a high energy pair conversion telescope consisting of three major subsystems: a precision silicon tracker/converter, a CsI electromagnetic calorimeter and a segmented anti-coincidence system. In this article, we present the status of the construction and tests of the silicon tracker.

Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit den REGIONALEN in Nordrhein-Westfalen als Instrument regionalisierter Strukturpolitik. Im Rahmen der mittlerweile sechsten REGIONALEN präsentiert die Region Köln/Bonn im Jahr 2010 die Ergebnisse eines mehrjährigen Kooperationsprozesses. Die „Zukunftssicherung“ wurde zum zentralen Thema des zeitlich befristeten, projektorientierten Ansatzes gemacht. Bei den beteiligten Akteuren und der Öffentlichkeit konnte sich die REGIONALE 2010 als positives Schlüsselsymbol etablieren. Als Erfolgsfaktoren lassen sich die Organisations- und Kooperationsstrukturen, die Förderung und gebaute bzw. erlebbare Erfolge sowie deren Vermarktbarkeit identifizieren. Mit hohem Aufwand gelingt es, in der heterogenen Region ein gemeinsames Agieren vieler zentraler Akteure zu erzeugen, was sich auch in der frühzeitigen Festlegung auf eine Nachfolgestruktur manifestiert. Die Chancen stehen gut, dass die im Rahmen der „Institutionalisierung auf Zeit“ geschaffenen Grundlagen sowohl auf der Projekt- als auch auf der programmatischen und organisatorischen Ebene über das Präsentationsjahr hinaus tragen., This paper is concerned with the programme of REGIONALE events organised in North Rhine-Westphalia as an instrument of regionalised structure policy. Within the framework of what is now the sixth REGIONALE, in 2010 the Cologne/Bonn region will present the results of a process of co-operation which stretches back over many years. The central theme chosen for this project-based and time-limited programme is “Safeguarding the Future”. REGIONALE 2010 has been able to establish itself both among the actors involved and among the general public as a positive and emblematic symbol. The factors behind its success can be identified as the organisational and co-operative structures it employs, the funding it receives, as well as the physical and tangible successes it presents, and the manner in which they are marketed. With a great deal of effort, and at considerable expense, the REGIONALE is able to generate joint action within this heterogeneous region on the part of a host of key actors; this is manifested not least in the success in deciding on a follow-up structure at a relatively early point in the process. There is every likelihood that the foundation which was established as part of what is termed “long-term institutionalisation” – both at the project level and at the programme and organisational level – will remain in place after the presentation year comes to an end.

38. A feasibility study to investigate the use of a bupivacaine-collagen implant (XaraColl) for postoperative analgesia following laparoscopic surgery

We therefore designed and conducted a preliminary feasibility study to investigate its application and ease of use for laparoscopic surgery.Methods: We implanted four XaraColl implants each containing 50 mg of bupivacaine hydrochloride (200 mg total dose) in ten men undergoing laparoscopic inguinal or umbilical hernioplasty. Postoperative pain intensity and use of opioid analgesia were recorded through 72 hours for comparison with previously reported data from efficacy studies performed in men undergoing open inguinal hernioplasty. Safety was assessed for 30 days.Results: XaraColl was easily and safely implanted via a laparoscope. The summed pain intensity and total use of opioid analgesia through the first 24 hours were similar to the values observed in previously reported studies for XaraColl-treated patients after open surgery, but were lower through 48 and 72 hours.Conclusion: XaraColl is suitable for use in laparoscopic surgery and may provide postoperative analgesia in laparoscopic patients who often experience considerable postoperative pain in the first 24–48 hours following hospital discharge. Sei F eine Siegelsche Hecke Eigenform vom Geschlecht 2 mit geradem Gewicht, und die zugehörige Spinorzetafunktion sei Z_F. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit zeigen wir (unter gewissen zusätzlichen technischen Voraussetzungen), dass die Dirchlet-Twists von Z_F mit quadratischen Charakteren zu negativen Fundamentaldiskriminanten gute analytische Eigenschaften haben (d.h. holomorphe Fortsetzung und Funktionalgleichung). Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit berechnen wir numerische Daten, die für die Böcherer-Vermutung (die eine Beziehung zwischen Fourierkoeffizienten von F und zentralen kritischen Werten der getwisteten Spinorzetafunktion herstellt) sprechen.

Because of differing patient attitudes to postoperative pain control and the inability to assess baseline pain, standard clinical methods for evaluating analgesic efficacy are compromised and justify application of novel integrated approaches.Methods: We conducted two independent, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies in men undergoing unilateral inguinal hernioplasty by open laparotomy to evaluate the safety and efficacy of XaraColl at different doses (100 mg and 200 mg of bupivacaine hydrochloride; study 1 and 2, respectively). Enrolled patients (50 in study 1 and 53 in study 2) were randomized to receive active or placebo implants in a 1:1 ratio. Postoperative pain intensity and use of supplementary opioid medication were recorded through 72 hours. Safety was assessed through 30 days. The principal efficacy variables were the summed pain intensity (SPI), total use of opioid analgesia (TOpA), and an integrated endpoint (I-SPI-TOpA). Each variable was analyzed at 24, 48, and 72 hours after implantation. A pooled analysis of both studies was also performed retrospectively.Results: Through 24 and 48 hours, XaraColl-treated patients experienced significantly less pain in study 1 (P < 0.001 and P = 0.012, respectively) whereas they took significantly less opioid analgesia in study 2 (P = 0.004 and P = 0.042, respectively). Following surgery, patients had access to intravenous morphine via a patient-controlled analgesia pump as rescue analgesia for the first 24 hours and to oral opioid medication thereafter. Total use of opioid analgesia was compared through 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours after surgery. Patients also evaluated overall pain control over the 96-hour period using a five-point numeric rating scale. Safety was assessed for 30 days after surgery.Results: XaraColl was non-inferior to ON-Q in total use of opioid analgesia for the first 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours after surgery, with a statistical trend towards reduced opioid use in favor of XaraColl over 24, 48, and 72 hours (P = 0.067, 0.100, and 0.089, respectively). The time to first use of opioid analgesia was also significantly delayed in patients treated with XaraColl (P = 0.024).
