This essay reflects on the experiences of faculty members at a large public university as they responded to the demand for online learning caused by the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic. It explores themes of course delivery, assessment methods, and faculty-student interactions and how these themes inform faculty identity. The authors suggest that the disruption to faculty identity created by the pandemic may be a fortuitous opportunity to examine deeply held beliefs about what it means to be a college professor

5. Assessment 2.0: An Organic Supplement to Standard Assessment Procedure. Ocsasional Paper #36

Abstract

The discipline of assessment has matured to the point where there is general agreement on best practices. However, the field has made little progress in developing a theoretical basis -- whether for assessment in general or for more specific dimensions of assessment as they emerge. Without a generalizable theory to work from, assessment professionals remain focused on the details of practice -- getting it done -- instead of turning their attention to systems thinking in the service of improving, revising, growing, or otherwise developing a field that is still far from perfect. In this article, the authors bring sociological theory to bear on learning outcomes assessment in order to understand its strengths and challenges from a systems point of view. Then, using this theoretical understanding, we propose an alternative method of assessment (Assessment 2.0) designed to supplement the assessment work already being done while at the same time avoiding its most difficult challenges. Assessment 2.0 is organic because it grows naturally from the professional judgment and experience of instructors rather than from the highly structured, linear procedure commonly followed in standard assessment practice.

Abstract

Current optical manipulation techniques rely on carefully engineered setups and samples. Although similar conditions are routinely met in research laboratories, it is still a challenge to manipulate microparticles when the environment is not well controlled and known a priori, since optical imperfections and scattering limit the applicability of this technique to real-life situations, such as in biomedical or microfluidic applications. Nonetheless, scattering of coherent light by disordered structures gives rise to speckles, random diffraction patterns with well-defined statistical properties. Here, we experimentally demonstrate how speckle fields can become a versatile tool to efficiently perform fundamental optical manipulation tasks such as trapping, guiding and sorting. We anticipate that the simplicity of these "speckle optical tweezers" will greatly broaden the perspectives of optical manipulation for real-life applications.

13. The Aspirational Curriculum Map: A Diagnostic Model for Action-Oriented Program Review

Abstract

When the process of curriculum mapping begins with the faculty's articulations of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes students should master upon graduation, a curriculum map results that enables faculty to review the curriculum for effectiveness, see the workings of the whole curriculum at a glance, plan assessments, and recognize where adjustments or changes need to be made. This article explains these benefits and lays out a step by step process for building such a curriculum map that can be adapted to any institutional context. We also describe a variety of outcomes from and reactions to our process.

Abstract

B cell zone reticular cells (BRCs) form stable microenvironments that direct efficient humoral immunity with B cell priming and memory maintenance being orchestrated across lymphoid organs. However, a comprehensive understanding of systemic humoral immunity is hampered by the lack of knowledge of global BRC sustenance, function and major pathways controlling BRC-immune cell interactions. Here we dissected the BRC landscape and immune cell interactome in human and murine lymphoid organs. In addition to the major BRC subsets underpinning the follicle, including follicular dendritic cells, PI16$^{+}$ RCs were present across organs and species. As well as BRC-produced niche factors, immune cell-driven BRC differentiation and activation programs governed the convergence of shared BRC subsets, overwriting tissue-specific gene signatures. Our data reveal that a canonical set of immune cell-provided cues enforce bidirectional signaling programs that sustain functional BRC niches across lymphoid organs and species, thereby securing efficient humoral immunity.

21. Open Innovation in German SMEs -- A Case Study.

Abstract

Innovations are increasingly emerging from networks in which different competencies can be bundled with the help of the Open Innovation (OI) paradigm. The present first of its kind case study examined the knowledge and dissemination of Open Innovation among German SMEs from the traditional industry of technical textiles with the help of an online questionnaire and personal interviews. In this way, it can make a significant contribution to the understanding of opportunities, risks and concerns regarding OI in SMEs. So far, this understanding only existed for larger companies and corporations. In this examination approximately 20% of the whole industry participated. The results of the study show that Open Innovation is seen as a great potential for improving innovation activities in SMEs. It is widespread among these enterprises but at the same time lacking behind the number of larger corporations that are active in the field of Open Innovation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Open Innovation offers great chances for the improvement of the success rate of innovations to enterprises and is widely researched among bigger companies and corporations. This case study investigates the knowledge transfer and dissemination of Open Innovation for German small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) from the very traditional technical textile industry. The study investigates sample of 56 SME, which corresponds to 22% of enterprises of the German textile industry. This study shows that the corporates' cultural framework and the resulting organizational structures have a massive influence on Open Innovation and the willingness to open up innovation processes. Nevertheless, a very interesting result of this examination is that, when it comes to cooperation, a similar culture within the cooperating enterprises is of less relevance for executives compared with other factors. Moreover, many of the surveyed companies still struggle with their experiences after Germany was reunited and complain about a lack of confidence especially when cooperating with companies from former Western Germany. On the other hand, when it comes to international cooperation, the missing skills in speaking English are named as the most important obstacle. A special focus of this examination is on the influence of the employee's mind-set and the company's culture as well as on the mind-set of the executives to develop an assessment tool regarding the cultural readiness for Open Innovation. This paper shows the concept of the culture based Open Innovation approach by a set of success factors, which are defined in cooperation with the technical textile SMEs themselves.
